Where is everybody today...sure been a dull day on the porch.

I'm mad because I bought a blow-up pool today for Erin at WalMart. It is one of those big, rectangular ones and it cost me 35 dollars. The first time we filled it, it started leaking and is almost flat. It really irritates me that I hve to let the air out completely, dry it out, fold it up and take it back to WalMart! They just don't make things like they used to and I was so surprised by the price of things today....wow.

I am getting a very sore throat and am nervous because the woman sitting next to me in church Sunday told me she had strep throat!!

Mavis, I thought about using chocolate icing the next time I make that banana cake because when I put the mashed bananas in the white icing, the bananas turned brown by the next day and it didn't look so good. Using chocolate icing would solve that problem, wouldn't it, and bananas and chocolate go together so well.

Sorry about your pool going flat Boo. I get mad when I spend good money on something, only to have it be defective. And as you said, especially when it's something you have had to go to some effort to put together, just to have to dismantle it and take it back to the store. And then of course you can never get the stupid thing back into the box it came in right, which just adds to the frustration.

My wife and I discussed last night the thought of her staying away from Preachin for a while. We are really seeing an outbreak of swine flu here in the State. 8 deaths so far in Utah. And it seems to be very strong here. With her comprimised immune system already, we just don't know about her going out in public much until things calm down. And about the only public place she goes is Preachin, but a nearby congregation last week limited it's service to a Sacrament only service because there are 3 members in that group who have contracted swine flu. So we are still undecided what to do. I know the Lord will bless us if we go, but I also think he has blessed us with common sense and expects us to use it. And right now I'm leaning towards thinking we should lay low for a bit.

I think I have mentioned that the little girl in our church who is undergoing cancer treatments (Jubi) is out of church often because of the effects of the treatment on her immune system. Her parents are being responsible and I see your situation as the same thing. God blesses us in church and out of church. Maybe this could be a sweet bonding time for you and the two of you could spend time on Sunday morning enjoying the beauty of nature on that front porch of yours, maybe sharing a scripture and a prayer together? Remember that Jesus said, "Where two are more are gathered in My name, there am I in the midst of them.." (I hope I got that right).

I wouldn't call myself a full-fledged socialist, but I'm not full-fledged capitalist, either. There is good and bad in any economic system. As long as it does not contradict my faith, I don't have a real problem with a "little bit" of socialism being added to our system. I know that probably sounds ridiculous to some of you, but I'm a mixed system kind of guy. While I don't advocate state control of all property or wages, etc., government control of vital resources, etc., in my opinion, is okay. Technically, outlawing child labor was a manifestation of socialism. Trust-busting was socialism. In many respects, the war materiel industry during WWII was socialism. The bottom line is that it is the purpose of government (in the ideal) to protect its citizens. It is purpose of business (in the extreme) to make money, as much money as possible, at all cost. Commerce has fought every regulation that ever was proposed, from child labor laws, to workplace safety, to fair hiring. I'm just not sure why anyone would think that a CEO holds their (or this country's) best interest over profit any more than an elected official. Both are human and both are fallible. At least I get to vote for one of them.

Socialism, at least in a western sense, just doesn't scare me. To paraphrase ole Teddy R., private good is not more important than the public good.

Do have a prayer need here my friends. Our partner for the Branson Gospel Music Convention (www.bransonGMC.com) has turned out to be a crook...and a big one. He's taken about 7k from the convention, and lots more than that from several artists who were signed with his record label. I've got the FBI involved...and a warrant should be issued next week. Please pray for this guy..he's lost, and needs to know the redemption of God.

June 20, 2009 - Msg 73443: I'm here, SPOT. Just been busy. Wow, I haven't had andy butter pecan ice cream in years! It is one of my favorites. When I used to visit my family in Michigan as a kid, I had an uncle who would stop at Baskin-Robbins on his way home and buy cartons of butter-pecan ice cream. Boy that was good on a summer evening!...if we could fit it in our tummies after grandma's supper. :-) Those were some good memories...sittin' in the glider on the front porch listening to my aunts tell stories about growing up in a small mining town in West Virginia, while my Grandpa listened to the Detroit Tigers on the radio. No air conditioning. We just sat outside at night and it was wonderfully cool...sometimes I even needed a sweater. What wonderful, simple times those were....times spent with family instead of in front of TV or computers.

Wow, Boo. Butter Pecan ice cream. That was my dad's favorite - he used to have a dish of it almost every night, back when I was a kid. We bought the Knowlton brand of dairy products back then - a local dairy in the San Antonio area, and they made great ice cream. They had their own dairy herds, so their products were overseen by the Knowlton family from cow to carton. Actually, I went to high school with Jimmy Knowlton, and even had one date with him, when he was on the rebound from a fight with his steady girlfriend. He was nice, but not much fun that night. Maybe he was missing Leah Ann. Wonder what ever happened to him? I lost touch with everyone after we graduated and I got married.

These days, I don't eat much real ice cream, because of my diabetes and the heart thing, but I've discovered sorbet. Still has the sugar, but zero fat, and not quite so many calories because of the no-dairy factor. Kroger sells their house brand of lemon sorbet, and it is marvelous! Very tart, very lemony, and delicious. Chop up a good sweet mango and top the sorbet, and you have a company-worthy dessert. Really good.

June 20, 2009 - Msg 73450: Oooohhh - homemade ice cream! What memories that brings to mind. We had the "crank-bucket" too - I suppose everyone did, until the electric freezers came on the scene. I still think the crank kind make better ice cream. We had a White Mountain brand freezer. Wooden bucket, tall and relatively slender ice cream container. Later they made them a little shorter, with the ice cream container shorter and bigger around. It was harder to get the ice cream to firm up in those newer models. I was watching a "How It's Made" or some such program one night, and they were telling about the old ice cream makers. I was delighted when they mentioned White Mountain, and said that some ice cream purists still believe them to be the best ice cream freezers around. I wish I still had our old one, but the metal fittings finally rusted out, due to all the salt, I guess. Sure made great ice cream, though.

Well, a bird just knocked the little umbrella fountain over in the pond, guess I'd better go stand it back up. Dumb bird. --Romeena
June 20, 2009 - Msg 73451: Butter Pecan ice cream! I love it! My all time favorites are Black Walnut & Black Raspberry, oh & Blackberry! MMMMMMMM! We discovered a new one here, Mayfield Sweet Cream, it's great, I bought strawberries, cut them up on top, added chocolate syrup and was it ever good. We've had bad storms, with hail just about everyday this week, now it's humid as all get out.

Yes MDC, I see a BIG difference to the Law of Consecration and the worldly law of redistribution of wealth as you pointed out in your earlier post. And one of the big differences, as you pointed out, is the motivating force that drives it all. I hope I could consecrate all I have to the Lord, because it's all his to begin with. And if I am a true disciple of Him, it's all good. I know he is a perfect God and His justice and laws are likewise perfect. Contrast that with having substantial amounts of your income extracted from you by the Goverment, and that money being used to promote evil and wicked things... well there is no comparing.

Possum, maybe you spilled some of that cleaning solvent Fred Goss gave you on your keyboard and that's what lost your post. (note I called it cleaning agent and not "spot" remover so that I don't offend our friend from Atlanta)

June 21, 2009 - Msg 73459: Howdy, all. Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there. Very hot here, 88 and climbing, very humid, and not even noon yet.

Right or wrong, I chose to stay home this morning. My dad passed away on Father's Day in 2003, I miss him today, and I miss my Dale on this day - guess I'm just feeling a little bruised this morning, so decided to stay home, and have some quiet time alone with my other Father. Sometimes that means sitting quietly, doing nothing, just thinking about His grace and goodness. Sometimes it means going about quiet pursuits at home, and keeping up that silent dialogue in my heart as I do routine things. How wonderful that we can do that! This afternoon, I'll get a nap, and then must go to work tonight. I'm working tomorrow night as well, so won't be worth much tomorrow, I guess. Then I'm off the rest of the week, until next Saturday night. I guess that means I won't get to church next Sunday either, but it can't be helped. God understands.

I've been listening to Floyd's "Two Chairs, No Waiting" podcasts this morning. If you haven't visited that site, and listened to the podcasts, you're missing a blessing. I learned that I can open a different browser while the podcasts are playing, and go to my jigsaw puzzle site. Then I can work a puzzle while listening to the podcast, and it's great! Check out the podcasts - you'll love 'em!

Well, guess I'll go find a little lunch, then a nap. Wish I could go to the Snappy Lunch and get a pork chop sandwich. Sure does sound good. One of these days.....

June 21, 2009 - Msg 73460: Happy Father's Day to all you dear fathers!

Ro, it doesn't seem possible that it has been 6 years since your dad went on home. Yesterday I was looking through some of the old archives and landed on the day of his passing back in 2003. So many sweet thoughts expressed by your porch friends. It must be pretty tough when Father's Day rolls around. This afternoon my MIL came to eat lunch with us and I was thinking about how it must feel to have lost 2 husbands already and have no Dad to celebrate with, either. Life hands out some pretty tough situations, especially as we age. You are right, Ro, our Heavenly Father is there and will always be.

Preachin' was really good this morning. Our regular preacher was on vacation so we had a fill-in. He is a missionary who has filled in before and he has the sweetest message death and resurrection. He described the way a seed is planted in the earth and when it finally breaks through the earth, it is in a much better, living form. As Paul says, "It does not yet appear what we shall be...the corruptable will put on incorruption and mortality, immortality"...wow. The minister said that once when he was passing by a cemetary with one of his little granddaughters, she said, "There's where they plant people!". I guess, in a sense, she was right.

Think I will take a little nap.

June 21, 2009 - Msg 73461: Oh, my goodness. I just went back in the archives, and read all the beautiful, loving things you folks posted after the death of my dad. Such kindness and sweet concern. While it's true that the whole family was relieved for my dad's sake, because he had been so miserable, still it was hard to see him go. He had always been like a rock, the "go-to" person in the family for help, advice, instruction or just reassurance. Romeena, I decided to go back and read the archives around the time your Dad died too. It was sweet to see all the condolences posted. It also made me miss people that used to post here. Mary Wiggins. FunGirl. Bulbsnatcher. Charlotte Tucker. I could list more, but that's all that I noticed on the page that I looked at. Sure wish they'd come back.
It's stormy and rainy here again. Sigh. We've had so much rain, the most we've ever had in our area in June. Very strange. Farmers have hay already baled up, but still sitting in the fields, wet. And turning moldy inside, un-useable. It's sad. The wheat is doing good though. A small tornado touched down in a town less than a hundred miles away. Strange weather. (Everybody talks about it, but nobody does anything about it!)
I miss my own Dad today too.
I'll be on the look-out for more gum-wrappers for you, Tom.

June 21, 2009 - Msg 73463: So glad that you could still find comfort in those posts, Romeena. They blessed me as i read them. I thought about you today when I called my own Dad who is still out visiting in California. Just the blessing of hearing his voice saying, "It made my day that you called...I love you so much". I was struck with the thought of how lucky I am to still have him around at 83. I am very thankful tonight.

Hazel, I had the same feeling while reading the archives. I really do miss the folks that used to be part of our porch family then. Like Ro said, "There just ain't no place like Mayberry!" and I know that those of us who have been here on the porch for any length of time realize how special it is and what an encouragment it has been through many difficult times. I really have been missing you, Hazel, and am glad to see you coming back more often. Sorry you are missing your dad.

Having said all of that, I would like to send out an extra big "Happy Father's Day" to our friend Floyd, who makes it all possible!

Well, went out to my future homestead tonight and set on my imaginary porch. The builder has some stakes up, marking off where the house would be so I know just where the front porch is going to be. I took my chair and put it right where the porch swing would be and thought of all of you! It dusk and there was a wonderful breeze blowing. I could hear all sort of birds and then as the sun was going down and the stars were coming out, the birds were silent and I began to hear the frogs and crickets. I just sat there for awhile enjoying the stars. It was really nice. We have been starting to see more wildlife on the place. Last week while sitting out there I saw an owl fly over me and land on a fence post, then later I saw a racoon walking along the back of the property. Bruce says he has seen a fox running along the fence line twice now and we still see deer tracks now and then. I am beginning to think that I may not be able to have that garden I have been dreaming of! How in the world will I keep the critters out of it?

Ro, bless your heart. I hope your day went well yesterday. Sometimes those days of celebration can be hard to deal with. But it sounds like you had a good plan to deal with it. I pray your spirit is brighter today.

Hazel, all that rain. Were you right out there in it? It has beed crazy wet weather huh? I guess Hazel and I are close enough that weather patterns will affect us the same. I think it's about 400 miles that seperates us. Sure is making my corn stunted.

Boo, I bet you can't wait for the house to get going. What direction will it face? Our's is south facing. I love it because in the winter when we get snow, the sun, when it finally comes out will melt a lot off the driveway. Many a day I come home to a dry driveway while my neighbor across the street is having to clear his off cause it's in the shade from his house. A little thing, but a thing I planned when I built.

Morning ASA. Pretty smart building your house that way...bet you are the envy of your neighbors across the street. Our house will be facing just south but slightly southwest. We don't have to worry about snow (maybe once in a hundred years or so) but the way it will be facing, we will always get the nice south east breeze on the porch in the summertime and the back porch will be cool in the evening because it won't get the sun. I expect I will be having my coffee on the front porch in the morning to keep the sun out of my eyes. I also arranged things so that my bedroom windows face north, so I can get that great cool breeze in my room when the cool fronts start in the fall. Can't wait for that!

Well, there is a demon kitty about to jump on my and hang on with his claws so I had better go...

Did any of you get to watch any of the TAGS marathon that was on this weekend? All black and white eps from what I could tell. Fun!

HOMEMAKER: Birckenstocks?!? Are you kidding? One, there's the toes thing, and two, it is totally gross how they mold to your feet and very quickly start looking grody.

I watched the movie "The Bad Seed" on TCM this Saturday. Ever seen it? Boy, if they want to cut down on population growth that should start showing that one to young couples.

And I was so excited last night! A brand new "Poirot" on PBS! One of my faves.

The Mrs. is getting close to popping, so it should be any time now. The due date is July 8, but it would suprise me if it took that long. Keep us in your prayers.

June 22, 2009 - Msg 73468: REreading my post above reminded me of an amuseing anectdote. My maternal grandmother's parents were Polish immigrants and she grew up in a mainly Polish neighborhood in Baltimore. In that neighborhood, at that time, at least, most were Catholic. Anyway, when she was born they named her Marie (good Catholic name there) and for a middle name my great-grandmother chose the name of a sister at her parish she particularly admired. Her name was Sister Earnest (after the virtue). However, my great-grandmother, not being so good at English spelling, misspelled it on the birth certificate. So, my grandmother was saddled with Marie Ernest. She was not as amused.

Boo, I can hardly wait for your house to get started, and finished, so you can sit on that porch and enjoy it. Maybe one of these days I'll get down that way and come share the porch with you for a while.

Me-They, I'll agree that Marie Ernest is not a name most women would enjoy, but I once knew a woman named Walter Herman. Can't remember her last name, but her first and middle names were actually that - Walter Herman. She explained it very simply. Her daddy had plans to have two sons, and name one after his dad and one after his wife's dad. The wife, however, after giving birth to Walter Herman, declared she was not about to have any more children, and if he wanted to use those names, he'd better use them now. So he did. Incidentally, Walter Herman was over six feet tall, so I imagine she was a pretty husky baby. No wonder her mother called it quits.

OK, I'm off to spend the day in dreamland, so I can go face another shift tonight. I sure hope it's better than last night. I'm supposed to get off at 7:15, and it was 8:20 when I left. The other nurse working with me was still charting, bless her little heart. It was a rough one.

I bought a couple 2 ltr bottles of A & W root beer, a tub of ice cream, and some solo cups, and all of us at work just had root beer floats!!
Set me back all of 10 bucks, and 20 some folks enjoyed a summer treat! All the talk of homemade ice cream and sitting on porches made me "spring into action!" ha

Thanks for the open invitation, Boo, and one of these days I just might surprise you. Remember, my granddaughter lives in Port Aransas, or Aransas Pass, I never can remember which one.

We're officially in new uniforms at work - the key change being that white is gone away and replaced by Caribbean Blue - a very dark teal. Pretty color, but it meant everyone had to buy new uniforms. I like the color, but sure hated to give up my white pants, because they were white stretch denim, fit well, and were extremely comfortable. Oh well. Anyhow, the new pants I bought were a good two inches too long, and I was dragging my tracks out, so I decided to shorten them tonight. A wonderful thing - a sewing machine. The job was done in about ten minutes! Wouldn't have taken that long if I hadn't needed to fill a bobbin.

Well, guess I'd better scram. I hate being late. Poor little Toye Starr doesn't know I'm leaving again tonight, but she'll figure it out the minute I step into that bathroom and start putting on a little makeup. Poor baby, she just HATES for me to leave her, but at least she's quit crying and scratching at the door. I just put a pile of toys in the bedroom with her, and she does okay. She's so funny when I get home, though. She doesn't even look at me when I open the door, just starts carrying the toys out of that room, as fast as she can. Carries every one of them back to the living room, like "so there!"

Boy MT and Hazel, I used to watch Poirot all the time but have not for many years now. I noticed an ad on Saturday on PBS for a Sunday night show, but it is in conflict with another show I watch at that time. Oh well. One of the shows on PBS I miss seeing is Rumpole of the Bailey. Anyone ever see that when it was on? I think we may have discussed this before. I always loved Rumpole's name for his Mrs. "She who must be obeyed". Good stuff. And of course I loved the series of "All Creatures Great and Small" but my Lady bought me the whole series on DVD a few years back for a Christmas present. They were not cheap, but boy I have enjoyed them a bunch.

MDC, I had that same scripture in my head when I was typing my post out but forgot to add it in there.

Hazel, It looks like summer is finally gonna take hold this week. They are calling for 90 here tomorrow. Only the second 90 degree day we've had this year so far. Boy thats gonna seem warm. We have been mostly in the 60's and 70's all spring. But my garden will appreciate some sun and warmth.

Boo, sounds like you have thought out well about how your home will sit to take advantage of all aspects of your climate. You're a smart cookie. I'm excited for you guys to get it built.
