June 11, 2009 - Msg 73249: Well - gonna break down and buy me a Cricut. Have heard some really good things so JoAnn Fabrics has them on sale. Taking a trip next week to get one. That should help the economy. I have a feeling all of my Christmas gifts will be courtesy of the Cricut.

M-T, my son's hair is cut on a number one clipper blade. That is next to skin head and fortunately - we have to do that about every month because he has thick fast growing hair. My poor husband, on the other hand, has a solar reflector. The whole party for him went south.

June 11, 2009 - Msg 73250: I am feeling his pain. I started fighting the losing battle when I was 37, about 5 years ago. I started to notice that my forehead was growing. Until that time, like Aunt Bee, I had a nice head of hair. I was able to maintain my usual hair style (which was kinda short anyway) until last year, when I threw in the towel. I usually get a number one on the sides and back and a number two on top. This time, I halved those numbers.

And to think, I used to be able to put my hair in a pony tail (in college). I probably still could, with less hair, but men who go bald on top and then grow a pony tail have always struck me as a like sad. It's like they're trying to compensate or something.

Well, I ended up driving to Romeena's home town of San Antonio today to meet my brother at the airport. We arranged to take dad up there and then my brother would take over and drive him out to California...I hope my brother survives the trip! Dad can be pretty demanding at times. Anyway, San Antonio is getting to be about as busy as Houston! The driving was almost as bad. Hey Ro, we had lunch at the Alamo Cafe today. Not bad, but seems like it used to be better.

I don't know what a cricut is, either.

Happy Friday porch. Hope you all have a great one and a great weekend. We get a day of dryness here today, but more rain for the weekend. It has been unbelieveably cool and wet this spring for us. Better plan on cutting and baling my lawn when I get home this afternoon. It's getting pretty long.
Both my wife and I have concealed weapons permits and pack weapons. It's a shame we feel the need to, but in spite of all those who feel impressed to tell me I'm safer today than ever, I know better than that. Things are going on in our small area that were unheard of just a few years ago. And I only see it going in one direction. I hope and pray the need for either one of us to use it never occurs, (and chances are they won't) but it is still nice to know we have some protection. I don't harbor any ill feelings to anyone who doesn't choose to own a gun. But so often these same folks dessire to take away from me that right. That's where we have a parting of the ways.
Homemaker, you selling any meatballs at your yard sale? They make wonderful paperweights.
Hazel, you never did answer my question about your garden. You bneing obtuse with me?:)

Let me ask you something, if you were ever in a situation in a public place, where a shooter opened fire on people, would you try to take him out? I sometimes wonder how things would be different in some of these public shooting occurences, if more citizens were packing concealed weapons. I remember hearing an interview with a woman who was in the Luby's in Waco, TX years back, when some crazy guy crashed his truck into the Lubys and came out firing at people. She said she was in the serving line with her elderly parents and the shooter walked up and shot her dad and killed him. She had a gun in her car and was saying that she wished she had it with her when she needed it because her dad might still be alive (and many others, too). Of course, she may have ended up dead, too, if she had tried and missed. So, the moral of the story is: Ro, if you go to Luby's, make sure you are packin' "The Judge"....(kidding, of course). One more thing...as you have probably read, it turns out that the shooter in the Holocaust museum this weeks was an OLD KKK guy or something. I wonder what would have happened if there were not armed security guards there to stop him? I can't help but wonder if he wouldn't have gone through the museum shooting every black visitor he could find...

June 12, 2009 - Msg 73266: Good morning, friends. Yep, those storms roared through here Tuesday night and well into Wednesday. I had about seven inches of rain at my house - the pond was almost overflowing. Lots of small to middlin' limbs down, nothing major. Never lost power, amazingly. Lightning and such thunder crashes as I haven't heard in a long time. The thing camped right over my house, it seemed, for about an hour on Wednesday morning. Every thunder crash would set off car alarms all over the neighborhood. No real damage, though, and we needed the rain.

You know, the worse things get in this world, the more it seems to me that everyone is acting just like children. I recall a day when my two oldest were having a bare-knuckle brawl, as kids will do. I separated them, only to hear my 4-yr old daughter (without a mark on her) wailing about how her 6-yr old brother hit her. (He had a big red mark on his face.) He countered with "You hit me first!" Her answer was priceless. "Yeah, but you hit me last!"

Olbermann is just as nutso as Maddow over there on MSNBC. I was flipping through channels the other night and he was claiming that something Rush Limbaugh said caused the Holocaust museum shooting. Rush made a joke-I'm going to tell it,sorry if it offends anybody,but just to show you how whacked Olbermann is,here's the joke:
" What do God and Obama have in common? Neither one has a birth certificate."

I don't watch any Maddow or Olbermann,although I will sometimes watch the news coverage on MSNBC during the day.That nighttime crud is a bit much for me.

POSSUM: I don't think Rush's joke is funny, even in a sarcastic way, and don't see how Olberman is relating it to the trajedy. Ironically, it seems that "left wingers" like Presidents Bush, Bill O'Reilly, and Karl Rove were on this guy's "hate list."

AUH2O: My kids are usually in bed by 8:30 (they are still little), so that's not a problem. Frankly, I don't let them watch any unfiltered news at their age, no matter what the channel.

BOO: OKay, here's my tax moulage in a nutshell...

I don't like to pay them. However, I do see the need for some taxes and even gladly pay that which goes to tangible things like roads, defense, widows and orphans, etc. I resent that politicians spend tax money frivolously and wastefully. I also resent tax cheats and those who don't play fair.

All that said, I don't get upset about it. What I get or "earn" is entrusted to me by God. I'm supposed to be a good steward, even of my tax dollars, so I try and vote responsibly. But in the end it's not really mine, it's God's. As long as I do the right thing with what ends up in my hand, the people who take my money and mispend it will answer for themselves. So, I'll do what I can with what I get, and God will take care of the rest.

That may sound a little kumbaya-ish, but it saves a lot of heartburn and needless anger. My kids have enough to eat and we have shelter. So what if more is taken out of my check? Moth and rust, moth and rust.

M-T, I think it is very wise to be careful about the news when it comes to children. I remember as a child, that Dad would always watch the news at 5pm everyday and it was during the time of the Vietnam war. It used to make me very afraid when i would see those images of war. Most people wouldn't even think that something like that would cause fear in their children, but it caused me enough fear that I remember it well. I was too afraid to tell anyone about how I felt and in my child mind, I had some irrational thoughts about war and death.

June 12, 2009 - Msg 73270: I had a similar experience fearing the sun would burn out. I had a second grade science teacher who explained that the sun has a lifetime and would eventually burn out. Just about every day for about a month I lived in terror that the sun was going to burn out.

On a more serious note, I harbored a fear throughout much of my young childhood that I would die and go to h-e-double toothpicks. It was brought about by growing up in a church that doesn't believe in the security of salvation (you can "backslide" and lose it), and reinforced by the prayer my mom did with me, "If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take." It left enough doubt (what if I had done something bad that day I forgot to repent for?!?) that going to sleep caused me dread. I never say that prayer to my kids.

June 12, 2009 - Msg 73281: Gosh, Asa, I didn't mean to be obtuse (I know you hate it when I do that). I didn't see your gardening question, I actually had to go back and look in the archives to see what it was. Yes, the garden is all in, although I always seem to find more stuff to do. My regular garden, which has been in the same spot since we moved to this house, (about 19 years ago) is now starting to get too much shade. We have a couple trees in the middle of our yard, that have gotten much bigger thru the years, and also our neighbors behind us planted a little tree a few years back which has gotten big too... So my garden now gets partial shade in about 4 or 5 of the rows. So my husbands solution, after trimming our own trees back about as much as he could, was to build me an "extension garden". We have a really sunny side yard, where we used to have an above ground pool for when the kids were home, so he fenced in the empty spot to keep the dog out, and now I have stuff over there too. He just needs to rig up a watering system (Home Depot, here he comes) For now, I'm yanking the hose around, which doesn't fit all the way, and hauling buckets to the plants. Anyhow, that's my garden update. Between the 2 gardens, I've got tomatoes, peppers, onions, shallots, carrots, cucumbers, 3 kinds of squash, egg plant, basil and cilantro. I always grow extra, so my mom can have plenty also. She puts up pickles (although last year they were a little like Aunt Bees Kerosine cucumbers), and she also cans salsa. Plus, something I have really gotten into the last 5 or 6 years, beside veggies, is flowers. I start my stuff in the house in March or April, and then in June I don't have to go to the garden center for my flowers. I have a lot of perenials that come back every year, but for the "color spots" that I like to have, I grow my own petunias, marigolds, nasturshims (not sure if that's spelled right), stocks, four o'clocks, sweet pea vines, black eyed susan vines, and rose cleomes. Fun! Although it keeps me very busy. After I get home from work, I usually spend at least 2, maybe more, hours out in the back yard.

I love the sound of church bells too. Very peaceful.
I was raised on a farm that was right by the freeway. It's amazing how you can get used to noises, when we first moved there it was all we could hear, and after awhile, it was like, "what noise?"

June 12, 2009 - Msg 73285: Good evening, porch. Hazel, your garden sounds wonderful! You're a true gardener, starting your own seedlings and all. I've never gotten into that. Also haven't done any veggie gardening at this house. Many years ago, in Springfield, MO, we grew tomatoes and squash, and had enough for the entire neighborhood, but just have never gotten into it here.

The weather is very strange right now. It has been cloudy and humid most of the day, a little sunshine but not much. The cloudiness increased and it was fairly dark about 6 p.m. There was some spectacular streak lightning off in the distance. Now, at 8:15 p.m., it's much lighter than it was at 6, and the light is a peculiar greenish-gold color. Not that pretty green/gold color that you see on a spring morning, this is sort of a spooky looking color. There is not a leaf stirring on the trees, everything is perfectly still. My guess is we're going to get another rainstorm and probably some hail. The sky has a greenish cast to it,which often means hail. Guess we'll see. I'm glad I'm home tonight.

Here's a question for everyone: Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons? Just wondering....

Did you get a hailstorm last night, Romeena? I know that green look of which you speak. I will never forget sitting through Hurricane Celia back in the 70's...when the eye of the storm was passing over us, it was like that...nothing stirring and a strange green color. It is amazing how it can be storming, then suddenly calm and clear. Really a creepy feeling and I guess the barometric pressure is high inside the eye because I remember people's car windows shattering.

Guess I should be thankful I have a job right now and getting so many hours in. Speaking of the gardening subject, I was so proud of myself I had planted some cucumber plants, and they were doin so nicely it's just me and the hubby so we rarely plant a whole lot anyways those hateful slugs got into them and ate the ones that were growing so well. June 13, 2009 - Msg 73290: Good morning, everyone! No,Boo, we didn't get any kind of a storm last night. That green light finally faded, the sky turned a more natural color and brightened, and a little breeze started up. This morning, the yard is full of birds, and the trees are full of squirrels. I'll go put some feed out in a minute, and the trees will empty out. There will be at least six squirrels out there in a matter of minutes. Such fun!

Salty, that's a shame about your cucumbers. There's a product called Sluggo that's effective against snails and slugs, and according to most natural gardeners, is safe in an organic program. It claims to be pet-safe, but I wouldn't count on that, I've read conflicting information in that regard. If you have pets who tend to pick up things they find on the ground, I'd keep them away from the Sluggo.

Another very good option is diatomaceous earth. You can get it at any good garden center, and you just spread it around your plants. It works. I have a lot of hostas, which snails just love and will eat to the ground in a couple of days. I've controlled the problem very well with both of those products.

It is HOT here this morning! Sun is shining bright and it is very warm, even for 8am. That's just the way it is here in south Texas..6 months of hot weather without a break. It's nice and cool here Boo. Temps around mid 50's, and everything looking clean and fresh after a night of rain. Sky is mostly clear with some big fluffy clouds hanging around the mountains. Should see some more afternoon thunder bumbers boil up as the temps rise. Gosh I love Sunday mornings. Things are quiet and peaceful.

Possum, sounds like you are having a lot of un with all the visitors.

Hazel, that's dedicated gardening, carrying water to your plants with buckets. I bet your garden is nice.

Well we are staying home from preachin today. The Mrs just finished up a three day steroid infusion and is feeling pretty poorly. So I've been porch sittin and reading scriptures and enjoying the morning. Boy, I like it pretty fine I must say.

Guess I'll head back out there and enjoy the fresh cool (for your benifit Boo) air, and watchthe clouds bubble up.

Asa, prayers for your dear lady - hope she's feeling better by now. I think it's just fine to stay home now and then, as you did this morning. We all need quiet time, a chance to meditate on the blessings and mercies of the Lord, to examine our own hearts and do a bit of "housecleaning" there, and just to be still and listen for His voice.

It's HOT here! It's 91 and climbing, at 1:30. Will hit the upper 90s by late afternoon. The humidity is high, so when you step outside, you immediately break out in sweat. Not perspiration, friends, it's plain old sweat. I took little Starr out with me briefly, just to let her get some sunshine on her nose. Within about three minutes, she was panting hard, so I brought her back in. There is no way she could be an outdoor dog, she would die out there the first day. I feel so sorry for the dogs who do have to live in the heat, or the cold or whatever. We have domesticated dogs, robbed them of their survival instincts to a great extent, and then we put them in fenced yards (or tie them up, heaven forbid!) where they're prevented from seeking protective shelter, assuming they still know what to do. I don't understand - what's the point of having the dog? I know I'm glad I'm not walking around in a thick fur coat out there today, trying to find a patch of shade. Poor things.

Well, guess I'll go peel potatoes, clean and prepare some strawberries, and otherwise get a little jump on dinner preparations for tonight. Then, I think I'll just take a nap! Be blessed, all. --Romeena

June 14, 2009 - Msg 73299: My strawberries are cleaned, and are now surrendering their juice to a thin layer of sugar, so they'll make a nice topping for ice cream later. I also diced up three mangoes - all of them ripe, sweet and juicy. No sugar on them, they don't need it. Spooned over a scoop of lemon sorbet, they will be a show-stopper. Now I still have to peel those miserable potatoes. I just hate that job, but it must be done. Folks will be here in an hour or so, better get busy. I might give Starr a bath if there's time. She's not stinky - she never is, that's one more endearing quality about a Maltese - but she doesn't smell nice and fresh, so I'll try to make time. Later, taters. (No pun intended.) --Romeena

Gosh Boo and Ro. We got up to 71 here before afternoon storms boiled up. Right now it's cloudy and 63. They are calling for 90's by next weekend though. It sure has been a great spring here.
Shame on me MDC. I remembered yesterday it was Flag Day today, but with the wife ailing, I plum forgot about getting my flag up.

Just been watching a special here about the Dead Sea Scrolls. Pretty interesting stuff. Anyone here know much about them?

June 15, 2009 - Msg 73307: Good late night, friends! It's a couple of minutes past midnight here, and 84 degrees. That should give you some idea of how our weather went today.

My son David, and his wife's dad, Jerry, fixed my big old umbrella up out there by the pond. I ordered a 9-foot (diameter) beach umbrella to provide shade for the pond water, hoping that will slow down the algae growth a bit. Almost ordered the 45 lb. stand for it, but then realized a hard wind would still blow it over, and where would I locate a stand that big without mashing some flowers, how would I manage anything that heavy, etc. Decided some PVC pipe driven into the ground would work pretty well, and it does. The pipe goes into the ground about 15", with another 5" above ground. The umbrella pole fits into the pipe perfectly, so it's well supported when in place. They put pipe down in three locations so I can move the umbrella around when I want to, but the main location shades about 2/3 of the pond. I think that will be enough to slow the algae down some. Actually, the umbrella looks pretty cute out there - it's bright blue, has a little scalloped edge, and an air vent in the top so it doesn't fly away like a kite. It cranks up and down, and tilts from the horizontal to the vertical and any position in between. Umbrella cost $90, stand would have been $85 plus lots of shipping. PVC pipe was $3.49, and works a lot better.

I went out to put my flag in its holder, and discovered that the shrubbery has grown up so much that the flag would have been hanging in the bushes. I couldn't even get to the holder to remove it, and I'd rather not pull those nails out anyway, and leave unpainted wood exposed, to attract rot. So, guess I need to buy another bracket and mount it on another post.

I'm waiting on a call from Dave and Brittney. They were here, after everyone else had gone, when their alarm company called. Brittney owns a boxing studio over in Ft. Worth, and the alarm was going off. The police called a few minutes later, from the studio. Seems someone has shot out the front door. So, off they went. David will have to board it up for tonight, and they don't know yet what, if anything, was taken. They do have security cameras inside, but that won't tell them who did it, unless the shooter actually entered the building. This makes twice this week. The first time, they didn't enter the building, and probably didn't tonight, either. They think it's a former employee, mad because he was let go last month. Why was he fired? For leaving the front door unlocked after closing, three times, among other things. It would not do for David to catch him. Why are there people like that?

Well, guess I'll watch a little TV until the kids call. They're supposed to let me know how things turn out when they get there. Be blessed. --Romeena

Well, this day started of well (sarcastic comment). When am I ever gonna learn to keep my big mouth shut...like Andy said, "How did that big shoe, all of it, fit in my mouth?!". My husband's family seems to have lots of problems sometimes, mostly due to one person who is really struggling. I opened my mouth and gave some advice on the subject, it got forwarded to all the siblings (against my wishes) and now I am the one in trouble! Well, that's the end of that. No more advice or comment to the family, except, "have a nice day and I'll pray for you!"....I should know better. It's like a person swimming for the second (or third) time in shark-infested waters. How stupid. Oh well, live and learn.

It was pretty quiet here on the porch this weekend. Hopefully things will get more lively this week.

Asa, I saw a program about the dead sea scrolls years ago but I forgot alot about it. Weren't they scripture written by the Essenes that were stored in jars and put in a cave somewhere in the wilderness and some kid throwing rocks found them not too long ago? I remember they had a jewish religious scholar on this show and he was showing a piece of one of the scrolls that he could read from the ancient hebrew language and it matched the King James Version of the bible he had. Pretty amazing if you think about it, that the scripture that we have today matches the ancient scrolls found in the cave.

Well, plenty to do so best get going.

June 15, 2009 - Msg 73309: Good morning, porch. Boo, I know exactly what you mean. My problem isn't with family necessarily, but with entitled, thin-skinned patients and families. Most people are pretty nice, but now and then you get a doozy. They're usually tacky, trashy people, the kind you hate to send an innocent baby home with. (I know, dangling preposition.)

I had an email from our unit manager this morning, wanting my side of a story. Seems that when I worked last Thursday night, one family and patient took exception to pretty much everything I said or did. We use a scale of 0 to 10 to quantify a patient's pain level, and based on their response, we have levels of medication to offer. Patient complained of pain, I asked for her pain level. She asked what that meant (I know it had been explained several times already) so I told her 0 is no pain, 10 is pain so terrible we would have to call anesthesia to come and put her to sleep. That got translated to my manager as "Well, do I need to knock you out?" The dad wandered the halls all night, stopped at the desk and chatted a lot, and at one point I asked if he needed pillows and blankets, and suggested he try to get some rest because he looked so tired. (He did, too!) That was reported as "she told us to go to bed, like she was our kindergarten teacher or something." You can't win. If you say nothing at all, you're unfriendly and uncaring, and if you show any concern, that's not appreciated either. A pox upon them all.

Dave called from the boxing studio. Nothing was taken, apparently the shooter didn't enter the building, just shot the door out. It's almost certainly the angry ex-employee. David is setting up a covert camera that will record activity outside the studio now, so maybe they'll catch him, the creep.

One of my renters reported that his disposer leaked. Ted went over to fix it, found a large nail in the can, which had been driven by the whirling blades into the sides of the can, making holes in several places. It was a new disposer, installed by Ted while the house was vacant, and it worked perfectly, because Ted and I tested it together when we did a final walk-through before listing it for rent. The renter insists it never worked. So, why is he just now reporting it?? Grrrr! I guess I'm going to have to get tough. From now on, when somebody flushes a diaper, they can pay the plumber. When they break a glass and the pieces go into the disposer and break it (or they drop a nail in it) they can pay for that, too. I'm tired of always being the one who pays. I'll pay for something that just breaks down, but when it's their fault, darn it, they're going to pay for it. Fair is fair.

Boo- that is amazing how those ancient scrolls that were discovered in the 1920s were the same wording
as the King James. It was the monks who religiously (pun intended) and painstakingly copied the scriptures by hand. Each row was then counted and recounted to make sure every letter was there and the same. I recently saw a TV special called "The Scriptorium." Very interesting.
I'll be praying for conversions at rehab tonight.

You are right. It is writings from the Essenes in Hebre, Greek and I forget the other one. Some are scripture, some are not. Some have religious conatations to it, some not. It's interesting though that some of the scriptures uncovered have additional verses included with them that our current bibles do not.

Well best go see if I can get through the rest of Monday without bruises.

I remember when I worked in the public schools one incident in particular: We had a little Puerto Rican girl in our class who had head lice.Her grandfather came to pick her up and the teacher along with one of the therapists who was in the room at the time informed the man about it,and gave him the basic,matter of fact info on how to treat head lice.I was busy with the other kids and didn't get into the headlice conversation. I heard everything they said,and it was all straight forward and legit. Well,about 15 minutes later,the principal comes to the room,calls me outside,and tells me that he had an irate parent up at the office telling him that the "white lady" in our classroom told him that his grandchild was dirty and that she caught headlice from the black kids in the class,that I suggested that Puerto Ricans were nasty and dirty,etc.The principal was black,by the way! He acted like he was embarrassed to even bring this up to me,but I guess he had to follow up on the complaint.
Well,I told him that it wasn't ME,that I said no such thing,and went on to explain that it was the therapist he was referring to,and I defended her on how she presented the info in the correct way- she even told the grandfather that it was nothing to be ashamed of,that her nephew had them once! Apparently,he spun this story in his head because he felt there was a stigma attached? Who the heck knows?!
Oh,and I reminded the principal that MY mama had been the school nurse for 31 years and I knew everything and then some about head lice! Even told him that blacks rarely have it,due to the hair texture,and the hot combs and grooming products they use.He looked at me rather sheepishly then,began stammering out an apology about how he didn't even want to confront me with this foolishness,but that he had a "crazy man" carrying on up in his office! I don't know how he ended up calming the man down. Mr. Pera ( I think that was his name) quit coming to pick his grandchild up from school after that,sending his wife instead. Whatever!

GEE,MDC,I wish I had the 2nd Season of LITB! I asked for it last Christmas,my sister got Season 1 which I have already.Returned it and they were out of Season 2.So I got "Green Acres" instead. I'm still hoping Target restocks Season 2.

GEE..Guess I'd better get busy with supper.Y'all want spaghetti and meatballs? C'mon over!
