Probably not in my generation, maybe not in yours, but when they become a large enough percentage of our population, and get enough of their own in positions of responsibility, it will come. Not in one sweeping move, of course. It will come a little at a time, but it will come. Our own birth rate has already dropped below the "sustainable" level, which is generally held to be an average of 2.1 children per family. This can be made up with immigration, but we'd better be darned careful who those immigrants are. Frankly, I think if we will work out a decent plan for immigrants from south of the border (i.e., affordable for them, efficient screening processes on our part) we would be very wise. The main thing those immigrants are seeking is a decent life, a chance to work and feed their families. For the most part, they're not seeking to change our religion or our legal lsystem. I'd prefer to share my neighborhood with a hard-working Mexican immigrant any day, rather than a militant Muslim whose "holy" book commands him to convert me or kill me.

The fact is, through a couple of personal associations, I've learned more than I ever wanted to know. I confess, I wish I could just go back to that time of thinking that everything is fine and will always be so. Unfortunately, that's not possible now. Equally unfortunate is the fact that in the next ten or fifteen years, unless America changes her course drastically, many people are going to look up and say, "Why on earth didn't I see this coming?"

more precise. Korean war was over, no established "cold war" as yet, employment was very high, modern appliances very good, "made in USA" was the norm, we were a lender nation, morals strong, faith strong, economy strong etc.
I was just a youngster then, but i recall so well those idyllic days when mom was at home after school and she really enjoyed "homemaking",
Phoenix was only about 200,000 instead of 3+million as now, air was cleaner etc. Life was GOOD for young and old. Sure, there were still world problems, but compared to today...
Just something to ponder. And in this microchip,
cameras-everywhere age, it would be very hard to
try to recapture all that again. Yes, pray hard.

I wore penny loafers and bobbysocks, and angora sweaters with full skirts, crinoline petticoats and an elastic waist-cincher belt. We went rollerskating at least once a week, went to $1-a-carload night at the drive-in theaters, and a date usually meant one of those activities with a stop at the burger joint at some point in the evening. Ladies were expected to behave as such, and gentlemen were definitely expected to treat them with respect. No decent man would use bad language in the presence of a woman. Children could, and did, play outdoors safely in their neighborhood. Religion was taken seriously, was respected, and as far as we knew, included Christians and Jews, and not much else. My parents absolutely would not believe what we are facing today. I find it very difficult myself. So - that's where I'm coming from. Is it any wonder I'm defensive? --Romeena

June 09, 2009 - Msg 73179: MDC, Bruce and I went to look at washers/dryers a few days ago and I saw a washer that was huge! It might be one like you have. Boy, the price of appliances these days, though...wow. I think I am going to go with a front-loading, large capacity. I found the stove/oven I wanted but almost choked at the price. I think building this house is going to make me very nervous. I'm really not one who likes to spend money, but I guess I better toughen up because we still have alot to buy. Things are really rolling along, though, and we should be starting soon.

Speaking of being a "homemaker", I did something yesterday that I have never done before...I made homemade brownies. Not the kind from a box but from scratch. The kids flipped! They really were very good and easy to make. I remember my mom making them that way when I was a kid but I always just used a mix from the store until now.

Romeena, the times you described sound so wonderful. By the time I came on the scene in the 60's things were really starting to change and here we are today. I think you grew up during the best years America ever had. You know, if I came into a large sum of money, I would open a drive-In. Wouldn't that be fun? Just like the old days...with the speakers you have to hook on your car window, a concession stand, swings for the kids, the works. I would only show family movies and have special events on weekends, like concerts before dark, while waiting on the movie to begin. I would have special nights like, "people in the trunk get in free night", or 50's night and award prizes for the best costumes. Doesn't that sound like fun? Oh well, I guess you can't go back but i sure miss the days of going to the drive-in on weekends.

Please keep my husband's uncle in your prayers. He is not doing very well - many medical complications. Congestive heart failure, kidney failure, infection around his knee caps, pnuemonia - he is 80 years old. He is a good Christian man. He and his wife are set to celebrate their 50th on July 4. It has really been hard on my in-laws because they have been going back and forth to Ky to care for them (it is a 4 hour drive). Thanks ya'll!!

June 09, 2009 - Msg 73183: Good morning everyone! I'm officially "back." We had a great tie in Chincoteague. The weather was a little iffy the last couple of days and the Mrs. was pretty uncomfortable much of the time, but the kids had fun. We got to the beach (just once), rode bikes, swam in the pool (there is one at the house we rented), and ate homemade ice cream every night at the Island Creamery. And everyone played nice together (the adults, I mean). It's nice to be back, though.

Man! You guys really burned up the virtual memory space while I was gone! It took me about hald an hour just to scan the archives since I was gone. Continued prayers for Kai, ASA's mother-in-law, and others.

It's great to see so many on the porch, especially awol people HAZEL, AUH2O, RAFE, FLOYD, and GOOBER. Let's keep it up people! Or was my being away have something to do with so many coming back...

I have a big ole bone to pick with you people! What's the big deal having so many moulage-worthy conversations while I'm away? When I'm here it's "nice weather we're having." Soon as I get out of earshot y'all are discussing politics, guns, socialism, and other great stuff. There's some thick moulages there to be sure. I guess that's true for all of His children, though. He must long for the day that when he has us with him.

You know, talking about washing dishes...when we lived at my parent's I hand washed all the dishes for 6 people and I was doing it throughout the day. My hands have never been the same. They aged about 10 years from all the dish washing! I am happy to have a dishwasher now.

Sorry you had that experience, Possum. I used to get my belly so full of that kind of nonsense when I was a young nurse...we have talked about that before, though. It is such a pain dealing with people like that.

Okay, since I have lots of great topics to open my big yap about, let's start with...

Guns. I don't own one, and probably never will, but I respect the right of others to do so. I also understand their anxiety about protecting their families. However, I figure the odds of me needing it are pretty slim to start with, and if you start figuring things like it being loaded and handy when I need it, me being aware of the danger in time, etc., it just doesn't balance with the danger of having it around with four kids. (One thing I've never really understood: if you lock up your unloaded gun for safety reasons, how's that gonna do you much good in a pinch?) Even for kids who grow up around guns, are taught to respect them, are reasonable bright, and have diligent parents, tragic accidents can happen. Kids make stupid mistakes for stupid reasons like peer pressure and just plain immaturity. I'm a living testament to that.

Like I said, I respect citizens right to own a gun, but I don't I don't agree that that means any gun, any time. Sorry! Like, 99% of illegal guns start out legal and end up in the wrong hands because they are stolen or resold. (Guns aren't being sold out the back door of manufacturers or being welded together in kitchens.) It stands to reason: fewer guns being owned equals fewer (eventually, at least) on the street. It's simple math.

In the incident you described ROMEENA, I can't help but think what people would be saying today if the good samaritan had accidently shot another bystander. Or if he'd been mistakenly shot by a police officer arriving on the scene.

It is interesting that so many people today feel the need to carry or at least own a gun for protection because of the crime rate. The "average" American is less likely to be the victim of a violent crime now than they were 30 years ago. And even then the likelihood was very small. In fact, the crime rate in some cities like New York is way less (by percent) then 100 years ago. One of the things I've read about along the way is that in many towns in the "Old West," the way lawlessness was stamped out was not to arm all the good citizens, but to pass laws prohibiting guns in towns, on city streets, or in certain businesses. Even though a few varmits no doubt used that to their advantage, I bet it was a lot easier to tell who the bad guys were. Kinda ironic, isn't it?

I have at least 18 years of having a child/teen living with me. If I owned a gun, that's over 6,550 days of being anxiously vigilant. Since my chances of being home-invaded or something are a fraction of a percent of that, I'd rather live with that. With four kids who will one day be teens, I've got plenty of other things to lay awake at night worrying about!

It may be simple math if all factors remain unchanged, but I don't think they would. Take away today's most common source, (which you believe would be the guns held by private citizens), and the criminal element will just turn to another source. Did you ever hear of a zipgun? They were quite popular among young Latino men in San Antonio when I was growing up there. A zipgun is a deadly little weapon that isn't even a firearm. It's a wooden carving that resembles a gun, is powered by extremely strong rubber bands, shoots metal projectiles filed to a point, and it kills. Criminals will ALWAYS have weapons, whether private citizens have them or not.

Now, as to your personal reasons for not having a firearm in your home, I absolutely and totally agree with you, on all counts. That's why my pistol is the first firearm to be in my home, ever. When my husband was living, and our children were at home, we never saw the need for one and could see a lot of dangers. Now, things are different. I promise you, a 70 year old woman alone sees the world much differently than you do. It's inevitable.

I was verbally chastised by a woman from church who knows I wouldn't kill the squirrels who raid my bird feeder, yet she heard me say I could and would fire at an intruder in my home. She said, "You mean you wouldn't kill a stupid squirrel, but you would shoot a human being?" I said, "Yep. However, if the intruder wants to go rob seed from my bird feeder, he's welcome and I'll do him no harm, and if the squirrel comes in the house and tries to kick in my bedroom door, I'll blow his little tail off." Everyone else in the room roared, LOL, and she just looked at me like a duck looking at thunder. Well, she asked for it!!

Oh, just got this email from REV - "PS...The tour is going really good and God continues to bless. I haven't been able to get to the porch too much so tell everyone hello for me and miss them and remind them that Jesus loves them!."

From what I have read, about 1 in 20 women will be a victim of a violent crime...that is way too many to feel safe and Romeena has stated that her neighborhood has a rising crime rate. Now, granted, most of those victims are probably assaulted by boyfriends and husbands, and if they shot one in self-defense, they would go to jail (like so many women have). I feel like you do about guns in the home with children and I would never have one in my home, but in Romeena's case, I think if it gives her peace of mind and she is sure that she would shoot to kill, it is a good idea. My worry would be that she might pull a gun on an intruder and not be able to kill, and that could be a very tragic situation for her. I also have some concern about her grandchildren visiting. Once, years ago, I had a loaded gun in my bedroom and a child that my sister was babysitting wandered into my bedroom and was there a few minutes before I remembered the gun was there. It scared me so badly that it made a big impression on me and I decided I would never have a gun in the house with children again, and I haven't. Bruce owns some guns that were his father's and he has rifles for hunting and they are actually kept in a large bank safe in someone else's garage. When Sean started taking the Paxil years ago, we were told he could never be around guns, too, so we try to be very vigilant about that.

June 10, 2009 - Msg 73201: Boo - thanks for praying for my husband's uncle. He was pretty with it yesterday but the doctors have told him that he has about 6 months to live. He has a heart valve that needs to be replaced but because of his age and the condition of his lungs, he would never survive the surgery. So, I am hoping that he and Aunt Ri will get things in order for her in case he passes sooner. Hopefully - they will get to celebrate their 50th on July 4.

ROMEENA: Situations are different. In yours, I am inclined to agree with your reasoning. If you were my mom, I certainly wouldn't be arguing with your decision, only insisting that you hit the gun range from time to time. Something tells me you're a crack shot ;-). Seriously, it sounds like you and I track pretty close in reasoning. Shame on that woman for chastising you. Like you would ever shoot at someone except under the most dire circumstances! And I'm sure you never hope to have cause to.

BOO: You probably are correct about your statistics. However, I would bet that that the vast majority of those are crimes committed by people close to teh woman. And that's another thing, I heard a while back that when statistics like this are thrown out, "woman" should more accurately be stated as "female" since many of these crimes are committed on children and teens. I think that makes it even more disturbing but less a justification for owning a gun.

I believe that men are leaders in their homes, but, as Christ models, should be servant>-leaders. Unfortunately, that part gets skipped over a lot. Part of that responsibility is that a husband, or boyfriend, is to protect and defend his significant other. When a man does her harm, he is committing a grievous sin by perverting what is commanded of him. There's not much lower than that.

You have a point about the crime stats and many of them being children and teens. I read not too long ago that 1 in 5 women/female children, will be a victim of s#xual abuse of some kind. Since I have been going to the drug rehab, I see that for those girls, it is probably 4 out of 5. They have fathers, boyfriends and husbands that abuse them on a regular basis, instead of protecting them, as you mentioned above. It just makes me sick. What kind of man does something like that to a child?

I am very blessed and thankful to have a husband who can protect the kids and me. I have no doubt he would kill an intruder in a heartbeat, never thinking twice. Besides Christ, his family is his life. I only wish it were so for every family and child in this world. You are so right, that it is a man's God-given duty to protect and defend his family.

Almost forgot...send over those shorts and I'll wash 'em.

I'd like to think that I know my family and friends and they'd never do anything like that, but I bet people close to any abuser felt the same. The reality is that statistically you have a better chance of avoiding child abuse by dropping your 10 year-old off at the mall unchaperoned than you do droping them off at the home of a good friend or family member. You're right, it is sick, and makes my heart ache. I have family and friends I trust with my life, but when it comes to my kids I trust no one blindly. But I do let them play in the front yard.

June 10, 2009 - Msg 73211: M-T, my husband would throw a fit if I left our kids (12 and 11) unchaperoned anywhere. I feel comfortable in some places but for the most part, they are where mom or dad can see them.
This last weekend at the goat show, there was a registered se* offender there. We obviously didn't know the circumstances surrounding his labeling but we made sure that both of the boys were aware and on-guard for themselves. Dad and mom were present all of the time too! They showed the man's goats and helped him unload them but as I said, we were there too in close proximity.

Got choco chip cookies in the oven - come over later, got moo juice to go with them.

We had guns in the house when I was growing up. I never even considered touching one of them, either - in fact, they scared me to death. The reason why was, my dad held my hands and let me shoot a couple times when I was little. Put some real respect (read: fear) into me and drove home just how powerful and deadly they were. In later years, I witnessed first-hand a snub-nosed .38 warding off what would have been an absolutely awful situation involving two strange men and my mom and me. I'm a firm believer in owning guns - with the usual caveats involving kids, of course. Besides, most of the time, all you have to do is show the thing.

HOMEMAKER: I was just making a point. I'd never leave my kids at their ages anywhere unattended, either. Sounds like you've got it covered: act like a Christian and keep a very watchful eye. I bet many people wouldn't have given the man the time of day, much less let their kids show his goats. However, by doing what you did you may have planted a seed that could result in a real change. Longshot, for sure, but better to concentrate on our job and let the good Lord take care of the stats of success.

Well, HM, for every "registered s#x offender", you can be sure there are even more non-registered ones at any gathering of people. I think the best thing we can do, especially with older kids, is to educate them on what to do if approached by a stranger or even someone they know and trust, because we can't always be watching them and like Me-They said, they are more likely to be abused by someone they/we know. There are some good websites to help you educate your kids without scaring them to death in the process. Also, boys and girls who are being raised without a dad in the home are more likely to be abused by s#xual predators. So, if you are a single mom, you
have to be especially wise about who you trust with your kids.

I grew up in a gun-free home, so I guess I am more concerned about kids getting ahold of them. Growing up in Texas, though, I think most people had/have guns in their home and think nothing of it.

June 10, 2009 - Msg 73222: Yeah, Me-They. Ain't that a shocker? (heehee) Seriously, during the years we lived in the country, we had a .22/.410 rifle/shotgun, and a .22 pistol. My dad taught me to use them, and allowed me to do so, under supervision. That took the mystery out of them, and I quickly lost interest in them. I'll never forget my introduction to the .410 shotgun, though. I had fired the .22 part several times, and found that I had a pretty good eye. Then Daddy sat me on the top rail of the fence, put some tin cans on the ground about 40 yards away, and told me to shoot them with the .410 shotgun. He did warn me to hold the gun tight to my shoulder, but I thought it would be about like the .22, so wasn't really ready when I pulled that trigger. Ka-boom! That thing kicked like a mule, knocked me clean off the fence, and instead of hitting a can on the ground, I shot a cluster of little limbs off a mesquite tree, about fifteen feet up. The "kick" from that gun raises the barrel considerably! After that, Daddy let me practice until I was comfortable and competent with the gun. Then he put it away, told me never to touch it without permission, and that was that. I knew what the gun could do, I knew I could handle it, and it became a non-issue. I don't recall ever even thinking about touching that gun, except when Daddy would bring it out now and then for a little refresher practice.

Daddy also taught me to never point the gun at any living thing unless I planned to kill it. It is not in my soul to "plan" to kill any living creature, so birds and squirrels are safe around me. However, that doesn't mean I wouldn't fire at an intruder. I would, I most definitely would. My police officer friend (a very wise man) put it in perspective for me. When he recommended the weapon that I finally bought, he said this - "Remember, if someone invades your home, you want a weapon that will accomplish your goal. Do you know what that is?" I replied, "Kill him." He quickly corrected me. "No, your goal is to STOP him. The best way to do that is to hit him in the middle of the chest with the four slugs this pistol will fire at one time. That will stop him." The point was made. He didn't want me struggling with any misplaced guilt - just STOP the person. I can do that.

As for danger to my grandkids - I may have said this before, but here's the plan. The loaded gun resides in my bedside table drawer. My grandchildren never arrive unannounced or unplanned. I know they're coming. The pistol will be unloaded and put away. My children have been instructed to ALWAYS ask me if that has been done, when they arrive with the grandkids. The kids do go into my bedroom at times, because my movies are kept in a cabinet in there. I am acutely aware of the need to remove the gun when they're here, and their parents are also charged with the responsibility of making sure I've done it. That's about as safe as I can make it.

And get this, true story, google it,(pastor jail ringing bells) a pastor here got a 10 day sentence beause of church bells! Unbelieveable! He worked with the neighbors and the (actually electronic) bells,
which are no louder than other city sounds,
sounded once an hour from 8 am to 8 pm.
But the neighbors didnt like the ringing. Did the aclu come to his aid, NO. BUT, a mosque here wants to do their prayer tower call 5 TIMES a DAY, and the aclu is right there assisting their cause! Friends, Romeena is right, we need to start being heard again, and not be meely mouth weenies. America needs some CPR and if we
apply it now, she can be saved! I have written the President 4 times now, and I will continue to do so. It is as easy to write him as it is to make a post here.

June 10, 2009 - Msg 73225: Good grief, MDC. I ran that link, and to say I'm appalled is an understatement. Church bells, rung softly for a moment or two every hour during the day is a nuisance??? My church has an electronic carillon, and it makes beautiful, soft, soothing music. I'll bet the same people who complained will sit in a Chili's restaurant and shout at their dinner companions over the din of the "music" that blares constantly, and they don't mind that at all. What about lawn mowers at 7 a.m. on Sunday morning? What about boomboxes and car radios pounding out a racket that sets your teeth on edge? And they're worried about church bells? Signs of the times, indeed. And yes, you can bet the ACLU, that "watchdog of liberty" will be there to smack them down with one hand, while lifting up the rights of the Muslims to broadcast their calls with the other. Shameful.

It is time for Christians and our ancestors, the Jews, to rise up and demand the same respect and consideration that everyone else seems to think they deserve. We are being pushed into a position of second-class citizen in our own country, and I for one have about had it. We had better wake up. --Romeena

MDC, today at church I heard someone call General Motors "Obama Motors"! Oh, boy.

I love the sound of church bells. Sometimes when i am in the backyard I hear the church bells from the catholic church about 2 miles from me. It gives me an amazing, peaceful feeling and reminds me of the simpler days of my youth. Hard to believe anyone would have a problem with church bells, unless they were terribly loud or something.

Speaking of firearms, I guess you all saw the news today and how a shooter entered the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC and shot a couple of security guards before the brought him down. Makes me sick. I wonder if he got his gun legally?

I am ticked off at the neighbors tonight. Remember I told you about the barking dog and that his owner had moved out and taken him with her? Well, from what I can determine, there are still 2 young people living in the house and they are gone most of the time. Well, one of them got a puppy and guess what? It is at my door most of the time, whining and wanting companionship. No sign of the neighbors or of any water for the dog. Tomorrow I am calling animal control and reporting a stray at my door. I feel fairly sure that if animal control takes it away, the owner won't bail it out and maybe it will find a home through the animal rescue. Some people make me so mad!

Think I will relax and do some reading to lower my blood pressure and keep my head from exploding!

Yep Ro, them little 4-10 shotguns have got a bit of kick to them. I remember the first year I was old enough to go duck hunting. My Dad had allowed me to use one of his 12 guage shotguns and even supplied me with the shells. Well I had shot before, but the kick off of the thing was killing my shoulder. After complaining to my Dad several times, he realised he had accidentley given me the wrong shells. They were 3 inch magnums, that just kick like a mule on steroids. My shoulder was bruised for a month.

Well better get. Raining here again.

I love the sound of church bells, too. I also have a church a few miles away that plays them. I can hear them at 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays, when I'm typically working out in the yard before dinner. So relaxing. I can understand the frustration, too, though. I had a friend who lived next door to my church (his church, too). While he likes church bells in theory, he did say that hearing the same handful of songs ringing out each day at 12:00 noon (the loop plays three, evidently from a group of dozen songs) did start to grate after a few months and years. Too much of a good thing I guess.

Well, staff meeting. I'll be back later. After all, I did promise a tax moulage, didn't I?

Put me down for loving church bells also. Our home is in the hills above the village and I don't get to hear the often up here but on still days the sound of those bells off in the distance is just beautiful. Ya know, I love the sound of a train off in the distance also. At 3:10 am ya can hear it go by, I just love that sound also. I'm not so sure I'd feel the same way next to the tracks but I guess you know the deal when you buy the house.
