Good evening family, I guess I missed the sing along again tonight. My music ranges from classical, to bluegrass and almost everything in between. Not too much into the rap/pop stuff thats out now though. I'm stuck in the 70's. It's strange that this was the topic of conversation tonight. I'm not sure who's into the old stuff, but I found out today that the bass player for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ean Evans, passed away today. He had been battling cancer since January and God called him home a few hours ago.
I hope Spot got to go camping finally, I think we had about an hour of sun today, then right back to the rain and storms again. Dont know what we're gonna do for good around here. Guess we'll have to take turns cooking. Do ya'll like real hard boiled eggs? LOL Hope you all have a wonderful night--Salty Dog

Hey, Salty. Looks like it's you and me, and I'm not going to be here long. Nice of you to sweep the porch. I'll dust the railings for you.
You said you like classical music. Actually, so do I, don't know why I left it off the list earlier. It's one of those "mood" things for me. I don't want a steady diet of it, but when I'm in the mood, I really enjoy it. I'm not much for the really high-brow stuff, with all that rapid sawing on the violins - know what I mean? Like Andy said to the trumpet player, I know those furbelows are really hard to play, and I admire the violinists ability to run 'em off like that, but frankly, they bore me and set my teeth on edge. I like the smooth, soaring stuff that lifts the spirit. As for rap, well, that's not even music. It's mostly an excuse to record some filthy words.
I hope that Spotty dog got to go camping, too. He's been working awfully hard lately, and he needs some time away from it all. Hope the weather treats him right.
Eloise is picking me up at nine in the morning. I'm going with her to her chiropractor's appointment, then we're going to go mouse through a huge Tuesday Morning store. Does everyone know what Tuesday Morning stores are, or are they just a local thing? I really don't know. Anyway, they're fun. The name came from the fact that they used to just be open on Tuesday mornings, but now they're pretty much open all the time. They have a lot of interesting stuff - mostly unsold merchandise from every kind of store you can think of, but you can really find some bargains. Before Christmas, I bought an Anna Lee doll, a little elf critter, that would have been $40 anywhere else, and I got it for $8. That was at our little old store here in Irving, but where we're going tomorrow is the grandmother of them all, a huge store in North Dallas. I'm hoping to find some more Anna Lee dolls, really cheap. I won't buy them if they're not, but I love those little dolls.
Well, off to bed I go. Toye Starr has been hinting for some time now. She does love to snooze, that puppy. --Romeena

Boo,I think MDC will like pretty much anything we can come up with. Remember "Convoy" is one of his favorites?!
Salty,I like Skynyrd.Spot is into the 70's music too. Sorry to hear about the bass player. Not many of the group (original) left now,is there? Gary is the only one I can think of.
Yep,Big Maude- I saw ya up on a table at Morelli's too.Bet you had to use an entire tube of Ben Gay after all that dancing!
Guess Spot made it on his trip. I told him I'd help feed the Porch while he's away and I know y'all don't like my cereal,so let's head to Waffle House!

Good morning, porch! Spot, you and Miss Sherry have a wonderful time, and be careful on the road. We'll see you when you get back. Remember to discuss the cruise now, you hear?
I'm watching a cute scene out back. I filled the feeders yesterday, and a squirrel has discovered that the hanging feeder has seed in it. So, of course, he has claimed it for his own. He has climbed inside of it and all but rolled around in the seed, has explored every possible way of getting at it, and has now decided to hang upside down from the roof ridge and paw through the little trays on each side. Meanwhile, down below on the flagstones, one pigeon and one dove have discovered the shower of seed that the squirrel is dislodging, and they're in bird heaven. Because they're almost a match in size, they're sharing fairly well, but a lone sparrow came in a minute ago, and the two bigger birds worked together to run the poor little thing off! No matter, there's a big bluejay who will almost certainly come along soon, and he'll whip those bullies' tailfeathers for them, but he won't bother the sparrow. I guess he considers him too insignificant to worry about, but I'm confident the sparrow will get fed. The jays never seem to bother them. There's a cardinal family too, though, and there might be warfare if they come in. There's a pair of mockingbirds nesting in the eleagnus shrubbery, but they never come around the feeder. Mockingbirds aren't seed eaters, they eat some berries and small fruits, but mostly they eat insects. Bless their little hearts!
Well, off I go. Eloise will be here momentarily. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

I forgot to mention I did buy that TAGS calender from Weavers I was talking about getting, and it came last Saturday. I put it up in my office when I came in Sunday. And it sure is nice to look up and see it when I am feeling a bit harried.
I just missed the Gomer pic in April. The one on there for May is Opie and Mr. McBeevee.
Got a nice personalized hand-written greeting on the invoice too when it came, and was pleasantly surprised to see a 2008-2009 issue of The Mayberry Confidential paper in there with the calender. it was a nice paper. It tells what's going on in Mt. Airy. I tell you, it really makes me want to go to Mayberry Days.

Howdy, friends. Back from my doin's with Eloise. We not only went to Tuesday Morning, we went to the Last Chance store for Tuesday Morning! The next stop from there would be the city dump, I guess. Anyway, we walked in the front door, I looked to my right, and what to my wondering eyes should appear? The Anna Lee Mrs. Santa doll I had been watching at our Irving store. The original price on the doll is $160. Well, I hardly think so. Then it was cut to $90, and I wouldn't buy it. Next visit, it was $60. Still too much. Next visit, it was gone. But, there it was, in the Last Chance store. Not the same doll, of course, but one just like it. It was marked $49.99, but Eloise said it would be a little less than that at the register, so I bought it. Also picked up a Mr. and Mrs. Santa, also Anna Lee, each $19.99 each. Well, the big doll rang up as $30, and the two small ones at $10 each!! I felt like a bandit! They are beautiful, with their little drawn-on Anna Lee faces, velvet clothing and all. Really a worthwhile trip today.
Also bought a lovely 4-ft. wrought-iron, three-tier planter, complete with the coco husk liners and already assembled, for $25. I've seen them elsewhere for $75, but wouldn't buy one. Then we went by John's garden center and bought the posies to put in the thing. I already had potting soil and all, so now it's standing out on my front patio, bright with flowers, graceful with trailing ivy, and looks so pretty! Yep, it's been a good day.
Now I'm going to gather up Toye Starr and take her with me, and go get a haircut. They don't care if I bring her in, and she loves to go. If I don't get my hair cut, I'm going to have to cut myself some eyeholes to see out! It grows sooo fast!

No coffe tea or punch thank you Mrs. Boo. I could go for a nice mug of hot chocolate though. Either that or a glass of fresh squeezed o.j. on ice. Leave the pulp in it please.
As far as the songs y'all been talking about, there ain't many I dislike either. I like Abba, the Bee Gees and most music. Other than the heavy metal, rap and head banging c rap. But I don't consider that music. That top ten list of bad music, well I liked most of them songs. So I guess once again, I'm out of touch with most of america. But that has become more obvious to me in the last election, that I am no longer main stream America. I feel like an odd ball, looking in anymore. :(
One thing I have discovered though, is that the few songs I really dislike, and there are not that many, I dislike not so much for the song, but rather because of memories it conjurs up. If I happened to be going through a period of difficulty or turmoil in my life when a particular song was popular, and here that song today, I just don't like it. And it's not really the song or the singer, just the bad memories that go with it. To this day when Jim Croche's "Time in a Bottle" comes on, I turn it off because of a tough time I was going through when that song was a hit.
But most songs of the 80's (not all) I really enjoyed. And I think it was because the 80's was a great decade for me.
Anyway, hope you all have a great Friday. It's been a long week for me and I am really looking forward to the weekend.

I think I know what you mean, ASA. I hate that song I listed above from Grease and I remember when it was popular I was taking driver's ed and the instuctor liked to have the radio blaring and that song must have been played every 5 minutes on the radio. It really irritated me! I mentioned Jolene because when i was a kid, my best friend's older sister was into cowboys and country music (which we hated) and she used to blare Jolene 24hrs a day. I couldn't stand Dolly's nasally voice.
Most of the other songs I listed I can't stand simply because of their terrible (IMO) lyrics.

Boy, is my age showing! Or maybe it's the fact that I rarely listen to the radio. Anyway, about 90% of the songs y'all listed are totally unfamiliar to me. Never heard of 'em!
Boo, I'm glad you survived Houston traffic. That place is not to be believed. I have some really scary memories of driving in that town, and I will avoid it if at all possible. The last time I did it, I hit town just after dark, in a blinding rainstorm with high winds, and if it hadn't been for the help I received from another driver, I'd still be driving around looking for my cousin's place. God was watching out for me, though. I had stopped at a Dairy Queen on the outskirts of town to get some tea, and while standing in line inside, I got into a conversation with a young woman. As we talked, I expressed my fear of driving into Houston, with the storm about to break over our heads and all. She asked where I was going, and when I told her, she said she was going exactly the same way, and would be going right past the last exit I needed to make to get into my cousin's area, which is the Georgetown section of Spring. She suggested I just follow her and she would wave me off at the proper exit. I grabbed that offering like a hungry catfish! We got back on the road, the storm moved in, darkness fell, and the rain was so heavy I could barely see the taillights of my new friend's car. Fortunately she had a big bumper sticker, so I could always be sure I was following the right car. I followed her for about thirty miles, in blinding rain, wind about to blow us off the road, and finally she flashed her headlights several times, then put her right turn signal on, which I took to mean I was to take the next right exit. I did, and sure enough, it put me down right on the road I needed to be on to get to my cousin's house. When I finally pulled into his carport (he lives in a condo), I was shaking, and every muscle was aching. I've never been so glad to turn an ignition off in my life. I have not driven in Houston since, and won't, at least not until I get a GPS.
Well, guess I'd better go hunt up some lunch. Got to work tonight, so maybe a little nap will be in order later. Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Romeena, that must have been quite an ordeal. Your story reminded me of the time on one of our trips to Colorado, that I had to drive from Silverton, down the mountain to Durango in the dark, with ice on the roads. I had taken that trip several times, so even though I couldn't see the steep drop-offs on the other side of the road, I knew they were there. It takes lots of twists and turns and you get going too fast, but don't want to wear your breaks out by staying on them too much. It's not fun at all. When I finally got to Durango, I had to pry my fingers off the steering wheel....Anyway, at least when I have to drive to Houston every 3 or 4 months, it is easy to get to Texas Children's Hospital..just a straight shot on the freeway, exit on Kirby, then left on University and you're there. Not very tricky but Kirby is a pain. Only 2 lanes on either side and mucho traffic. Lots of pededstrians buzzing in and out of traffic, too...and then there's the horn blowers! Why on earth people honk while the light is still red is beyond me. I think it is going to get like new york city, eventually, and people will be leaving their cars at home and using public transportation. That medical district is so crowded and I noticed yesterday that they are builing a new maternity hospital across the street from Texas Children's. Great location for high risk pregnancies but it will only add to the congestion. Too bad you can't apply for a job there, Ro...wouldn't you just love to be right in the middle of all that mess in downtown Houston? hehe
OK MDC, you have let us in on some of the songs you hate so now it is my turn to serenade YOU:
"It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day.
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was bailin' hay.
And at dinnertime we stopped and walked back to the house to eat.
And Mama hollered out the back door, "Ya'll remember to wipe your feet!"
And then she said, "I got some new this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge...
Tonight Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahachie Bridge"
And Papa said to Mama as he passed around the black-eyed peas,
"That Billie Joe never had a lick of sense. Pass the biscuits, please."....yada..yada..yada..

Oh where you going to my lady blue
It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain
She just looked out the window
And 16 Parkside Lane
Something about her was familiar
I could swear I'd seen her face before
She said I must be mistaking
And she didn't say anything more
It took awhile but she looked in the mirror
And she glanced at the licsence for my name
A smile seemed to come to her slowly
It was a sad smile just the same
And she said how are you Harry
And I said how are you Sue
Through the too many miles and the too little smiles
I still remember you

Boo, I think I'd stand in a bread line before I'd move to Houston, if there weren't any jobs anywhere else. My cousin lives in Spring, just off the Katy freeway, and his mom used to live less than a mile away, on the other side of the Katy. Once I was driving from her house to his, and it took about 50 minutes to make that run of less than a mile. Ridiculous.
Well, I've got to get the monkey suit on and head to work. Just this one-in-a-row, so not too bad. I don't mind these single nights too much - it's those back-to-back things that just ruin a week for me. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

"Billy Don't Be a Hero"? Y'all will laugh, but when I was a teenager I was a full fledged member of the Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods fan club (they sang that) and even had an autographed pic on my bedroom wall! The lead singer was a "fox"-hee hee! I was sick back then-ha!
" Sister Golden Hair" & "Taxi"? Favorite songs of mine. No offense to the non- liking Porchsters. Y'all wouldn't get me to an ABBA concert no matter what,so to each his own!

Good late evening, porch. Hazel, it's really good to see you back on the porch. Don't stay away so long - we miss you!
I spent a lovely evening with my brother and sister-in-law. We went to see the new "Star Trek" movie, and it was very good. Wonderful special effects, as you would imagine, and it even had Leonard Nimoy in it! My goodness, he's so old! Time does terrible things, but some of the old campy charm is there. The "new" Mr. Spock is pretty cool, too. We saw it at a place called Studio Movie Grill. New to me, but maybe you all have heard of it? I gather that it's a chain/franchise thing. It's like a regular movie theater, except you're seated in very comfortable, leather swivel chairs, and there's a table in front of you! After you're seated, a wait person comes and takes your order for food, which is quite good and is reasonably priced, no more than you'd pay at most chain-type restaurants, such as Chili's. The prices ranged from $4 for some things up to the most expensive meal, which was about $12. We got three different things and shared, so we got to try different stuff. Great chicken tenders! The food is served just before the movie starts, and you just eat your way through the movie. At the price of cokes and popcorn in theaters these days, I think we got out cheap, and had good food instead of junk. Movie tickets were only $6. I would strongly recommend, if you have one of these places in your area, that you try it.
Well, I'm off to bed, will be up early for preachin' in the morning. Happy Mother's Day to all you moms, and all who have been "like a mom" to someone. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Hey ya'll - my son had his first chick today! He received an incubator for Christmas so this was his first try out. So we have our first baby black cochin.
The studio grill sounds great. My son is going to see the Disney movie Earth on Tuesday. It is a reward for having 2 or less missing assignments for the whole year. Because it is a small school system - the sixth graders were invited to go with the high schoolers going. So it is buffalo wings and rings and then to the movies for a popcorn and coke. They only had to pay $4. Thought that was reasonable.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble,
when you're perfect in every way
I can't wait to look in the mirror,
I get better looking each day.
To know me is to love me -
I must be a heck of a man
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
But I am doing the best that I can.
