Would it be possible to put something in front of the lights, rather that something that actually adheres to the lights? Or how about getting some large chinese latterns to put over them...might start a fire, but might not.

February 26, 2009 - Msg 70605: Good morning everyone.

I thank you for the thoughts and prayers you extended to Zac, his family, and ours, too. It has been a difficult week. It’s never easy when someone so young and healthy passes. We didn’t know Zac well, we do know his mom and Nora is friendly with his younger sister, who the Mrs. coached. School has been hard for all the kids, but made easier by the great support system they have there. Seeing the way this has been handled, I simply can’t imagine how a public school would do it. I’m not denigrating public schools, but at a time like this it’s so wonderful that the kids are in a family type environment, even at school—a place where hugs given whenever needed and place where prayer can be done openly with friends, teachers, and parents.

Zac’s passing is made much easier by the fact that he was right with the Lord. He was a good kid with a big heart, and an enthusiastic love for Christ. I won’t go into all the details, but be encouraged to know that even in death his spirit is striving to bring others to Christ. What a legacy for someone so young.

Feelings are funny things. I have been very sad, but not weepy or anything. Still, I have been in a funk for about a week now. Zac’s illness and death has made put my mind in a fuzz. All week I have found it difficult to concentrate on much else, or really get interested in anything. That’s why I didn’t come around the last few days. I can’t help but put myself in Zac’s mom’s place, but I guess that’s what parents do when something like this happens. It’s starting to subside, but your prayers are still appreciated. I don’t like being this “self focused.”

We found out that Zac died of the influenza—the garden-variety flu. After the second plasma exchange his body just couldn’t take it anymore and he had a heart attack. With modern medicine and our sense of invulnerability we forget that something like the flu can kill. Typically it’s the very young, very old, or people with compromised immune systems. But sometimes it’s having an unknown genetic predisposition, like Zac, and getting the wrong bug at the wrong time.

On a more positive note, the Mrs. had her sonogram on Monday. We are pleased to report that we expect another little girl to add to our family on July 8. The girls are of course very happy; Chad not so much. He had been looking for someone to play “boy stuff” with.

Thanks for listening to all my ramblings. I haven’t had a chance to go back and read the archives, but I offer my own prayers for you all and your needs. I’ll be back later or tomorrow, I’m sure in better spirits. I look forward to being my regular old annoying self again soon.

PappaBear- good to hear that you are out of the hospital. You will be in my prayers concerning the
surgery.
ME-They- My condolences and deepest sympathies, my friend. You take care and let time and the Lord do his work on you and yours. The flu- wow that is amazing.
As for the public school thing, I dont mean to be
a wise guy, but it is time that we all stand up
and remind "public schools" that the "public" part of them is OUR tax money; and any student or
taxpayer has freedom of speech there. Anyone who is there can pray there any day the week. We start standing
up for that right again, not necessarily in an
"overbearing" way, but not cowering when the topic
arises. I say right-on when these students pray
at their graduastions etc, as it is their right to do so.
OK, sliding soapbox back under the porch.
Have a great day!

February 26, 2009 - Msg 70608: So glad to hear from you Me-They, and thanks for what you shared about Zac. It's very good to know. I know very well about having your "mind in a fuzz". It seems I have had alot of that the past couple of years, and thankfully you have all been here to pray and help me when I needed it most. I, like you, tend to get very sad thinking of the parents who are left here having to deal with the death of a child and the only advice I can give is that when I feel that pain, I try to channel it into prayer on their behalf and try to remember that God is the God of all comfort and that his grace is always present for such times...remember the story we have talked about when I shared about Corrie Ten Boom, who hid jews in her home during WW2? When she was a child and fretting over something, her father would tell her, "If you were going on a train ride to visit Grandma, when would I give you the ticket?" Corrie would say, "When it is time to board the train." Father would reply, "That's right, and so it is with your heavenly father, when grace is needed, it will be there, not before". I have thought of that often over the years and it comforts me concerning others who are grieving. I pray for them that God's grace would sustain and comfort them.

I'm glad you're back because you are far from annoying! :)

The hands of time are turning
Without attaining rest.
To ever present changes
All Nature can attest.
Season rushes season,
What bloomed just yesteday,
Brings forth fruit for the heavest;
Time moves without delay.
No man can change God's precepts,
Nor make the time stand still.
We all must follow schedules,
Have duties to fulfill.
We work and rest, we win and lose,
Our days are hastening by.
Oh, how love the joyful hours
Without a tear or sigh.
And someday, looking back on life,
On joys, on on grief, and pain,
We wish we could begin anew
And live life over again.

February 27, 2009 - Msg 70620: I know the feeling, REV. I only got 2 loads of laundry done yesterday so I still have more to do, among other things. Things have been tougher on the home schooling front. The work is getting harder and Sean is not exactly motivated. It is getting stressful because I have to instruct him more. The kind of curriculum we use is very good at giving instructions and making kids work on their own but that only goes so far and then I have to do the teaching. In some ways it's a great thing because I am really brushing up on my English and History, and Science! For Sean it's torture, though. That kid hates schoolwork more than anything and I wish I could change that...don't know how, though. I guess it is just really hard for him with the dyslexia, although, he is doing much better in many ways.

Well, I had a message late on my phone from a very dear young friend who goes to church with me and she was crying and asking me to pray for her mom, Terri (who is also a good friend from church). She was afraid she might try to kill herself! Can you believe it? Another friend thinking of ending it all. She has "issues" and is bi-polar and apparently has been off her meds for a week or so due to a problem with her doctor. Also, one of her beloved dogs was killed yesterday by one of her horses and that was kind of the final straw for her. If you wouldn't mind, she could use a prayer today. Thanks, friends.

Hope the porch is fuller today. Seems like alot of busy folks this week.

Better get Erin up..

February 27, 2009 - Msg 70629: Good morning porch friends! I took the day off today to try and get caught up on some things around here and to just plain try to rest a bit. These last 2 weeks have been so stressful around here. Between the crazy lady and this new foster dog, it's been one thing after another. Poor little Lizzy (I didn't like the name Izzy, so I switched it) has had a rough week. Dr. Steve wants to try to get her off the Clomipramine that she is on and get her on something else that won't be as damaging to her liver. It takes 30-60 days to flush it out of her system so we started by lowering her dose, well, that was a nightmare, Wed afternoon, while I was downstairs grooming, I could hear alot of noise coming from upstairs so I went to check on her and she had chewed the entire end off her tail! Blood everywhere and I couldn't get the bleeding to stop, I also had 2 dogs in the shop and couldn't just leave, so Mr. Neff came home to get her and get her to Dr. Steve. Her little tail is healing again and we are back up to the original dose of meds, so we have to come up with another way to get her meds switched. It's sad to watch her sometimes, then other times, it just makes my heart smile to watch her actually just be a dog. If I could get my hands on the folks that caused this poor baby to begin that downward spiral, I'd likely be in jail somewhere!
Well, off to get some errands run, in the pouring rain no less, then back to work on a stained glass project that should have been ALOT further along than it is.

February 27, 2009 - Msg 70633: Good morning, everyone! It's only 61 here this morning, we had a cool front! Would you believe I had to turn on the a/c yesterday? It was 83 in the house, Starr was flopped on the floor beneath a ceiling fan, and I was sweating. Boy, did that cool air feel good! It's cloudy today though, and much cooler.

Oh! Oh! I see a big fat bud rising on an iris. It's Purple Streaker, my first iris ever to bloom in the yard, and it's going to be first again this year, I guess. Purple Streaker was a gift from Joe, my landscaper friend, who brought it to me from his own collection in his yard. A couple of others have sent up buds this spring, but they were too small and much too early and got frost-nipped and never opened. Those were just accidentals. This is a true bloom that Purple Streaker is sending up. I love it!

I talked with my realtor yesterday, and he said the police had called him about the renter that moved out of my smaller house. They're trying to find her, not because they want her but they want her boyfriend, the one who kicked in the doors around the house. To quote the officer, "He's one bad dude and we really want to find him and get him off the streets." Hmm. I could have told them that. A man doesn't kick the doors off the hinges in his girlfriend's house, just to say good morning. He probably beat the snot out of her every time. I suggested that the realtor call the cops back and suggest they check out the Humane Society and see who adopted that little pitbull. The girlfriend knew who had the dog, because the animal control officer talked to her on the phone and told her he was taking the dog. If she told the boyfriend, all he had to do to get his dog back was to go and pose as someone just wanting to adopt a nice dog. His name wasn't linked to the property or anything. I'm betting if they find that dog, they'll find the guy on the other end of the chain. I hope so, because I sure don't want him to have the puppy.

Boo, it would appear that you have acquired the reputation of being the "go to" person when someone has a problem. Bless your heart - that's a compliment, but it does make it hard on you at times, I'm sure. Prayers for you, my friend.

Mavis, I recall an episode of "The Dog Whisperer", where he dealt with a dog that spun and chewed its tail. I just Googled "Cesar Millan" and came up with a long list of links. I wonder if you might find some suggestions there?

Well, guess I'd better go. I've got to start pulling things together and cleaning up around here. That wedding is just about six weeks away! Argh!

Be blessed, all. --Romeena

February 27, 2009 - Msg 70634: You know, a wise man once said, "When you find yourself in a hole, quit digging." Someone needs to remind BO about that. It's amazing to me that he can think that going deeper into debt is the way to get out of debt. Banks wouldn't let me do it - why is the whole country any different? And Boo, your assessment is correct. Egomaniac. Look at his smug expression in his pictures. He considers himself master of all he surveys. Have you noticed how he always seems to be positioned so that photographers are shooting upward? He looks so much more imposing that way!

Where is our collective logic these days? Back in 1953, Ike solved a big problem, and opened up probably millions of jobs. Here's a link:
http://www.lewrockwell.com/suprynowicz/suprynowicz64.html
Several problems are addressed here. I don't know this writer, not sure I agree with everything he has to say, but he's right on the nose with the comments about illegal immigration.

I'm reminded of a neighbor I once had, who put out several cans of cat food on her back porch every evening, and then complained constantly, wondering why the stray cats were always hanging out in her yard! Duh!

If BO really wants to improve the unemployment picture, and really wants to correct our failing economy, perhaps he should remember some of his history classes, recall what Ike did, and go and do likewise. It worked once, it will work again. He won't do it, though, simply because it actually might work, and I'm not sure he wants that. We are in truubbbble, my friends. --Romeena

Thanks for the info on the Dog Whisperer Ro I don't normally go along with everything he says, some of his logic just plain won't work on these stubborn, but smart as all get out, Bull Terriers. I have found with them, if there's not something in it for them, they just plain won't do it. I've had them sit down during a walk and not budge! Ever tried to pick up a 60 pound dog that won't move & knows how to may herself feel like she weighs 100 pounds? It ain't a pretty site, trust me. :) Treats and positive rewards work wonders with these guys. In Lizzy's case, between the meds & some structure & stability, I believe she will come around. She at least deserves a shot at a good life if I can give her that. Boo I'm glad you guys like the Bullies' blog. I added a new post this afternoon with lots of pictures. http://tnbullterrors.wordpress.com if anyone else is interested in reading what they have to say. Oh, & Pappy just turned 1 year on Wed. February 28, 2009 - Msg 70652: Hey, I just got an email from a friend, with information about cocoa mulch. I was already aware of it, don't use the stuff, but it occurred to me that some of my porch friends might. Cocoa mulch is sold at Home Depot and many other big-box stores and garden centers. It's made from the shells of cocoa beans, and contains theobromine, which is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate, dogs love it, and if they eat it, it can very well be fatal. Theobromine is the ingredient in chocolate that makes it harmful to dogs, and it's present in the shells as well.

I have never used cocoa mulch, don't use anything but shredded hardwood mulch, but I just thought I'd mention it to you all, since most of us are furkid-lovers here on the porch.

Think I will kick back and do a little reading this evening...

February 28, 2009 - Msg 70656: Hey, Boo. Of course you're still on my list. I went back and checked to be sure, but there you were. It may have gone into your spam. I know you have my address in your address book, that should cause it to go right into your inbox, but sometimes the filters have a mind of their own. Also, I didn't receive it back as undeliverable, so you should have it. I'll send it again, just to you, and see what happens.

Off I go. A friend invited me over for dinner, along with some other friends, so of course, I'm there! We'll have fun. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

February 28, 2009 - Msg 70658: Thanks Romeena, I loved the article! Did you ever see the movie/documentary that was out about a year ago called "Expelled", made by Ben Stein? You would really enjoy it...see if you can rent it sometime. Hmmm...now I am wondering if you might have responded to my last email about my friend and it got intercepted by a spam filter??...

Thanks Possum...hope you get your computer woes straightened out soon and glad Laci is feeling better (she is such a sweet little darlin').

Hello Porchsters!

Boo, you made me blush. BTW, the only work out I get is at the dinner table, and that jacket HIDES hides the results very well. Ro, thank you for the compliment and thanks for posting my pic.

It snow/flurried on my end of the porch today! Chilly out there, too.

February 28, 2009 - Msg 70662: Good evening, porch. Just got home from my friend's house, and am about to give little Starr a much-needed bath. Been putting it off all day, and now I'm going to do it, I don't care how late it is.

It's cold outside, and getting colder. 36 now and supposed to get down to 28 tonight. It looks like there's a squatty little ghost in my back yard! My beloved Purple Streaker iris has two bloom stalks up, with fat buds on each stalk. 28 degrees tonight will nip those buds and they won't open. So, I stuck some tall stakes in the ground and draped a white sheet over them, enclosing the iris. There's a landscape light about two feet away, and it's illuminating the whole scene. Looks pretty weird!

Boo, check your email.

Well, I'm off to bathe a very reluctant puppy. She just hates baths! Sugarplum didn't like them much either, but learned to tolerate them. Toye Starr just shivers and shakes and looks so forlorn it just breaks my heart, poor little thing. She enjoys the cuddle afterward, though, just like the Plum did. That was always the best part.

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

March 01, 2009 - Msg 70663: Well, good morning! Looks like I'm the first one up. I'll make some coffee for those of you who drink it, and put on some water to heat for the tea drinkers, like me. If anybody's passing the bakery, see if Millie has any cream buns left.

I just watched a fat, rumpled, sleepy little squirrel emerge from one of the nest boxes. He's perched on top right now, enjoying the first rays of the sun. So cute!

It's 30 degrees at the moment, and my desktop weather channel says the windchill is 20 degrees, but I'm wondering how they know that, because there's no wind! (Thank heaven!)

Well, guess I'd better get ready for preaching. We are in the process of calling a new music minister, and will probably vote on someone today. May God lead us!

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

March 01, 2009 - Msg 70664: I'll have some coffee, Ro, and I'll bring the buns (haha...sounds funny). It's pretty cold here, too this morning, but the sun is shining bright and I am sure it will warm up. It was very windy here yesterday but seems to have calmed down this morning. Have a good Sunday and may God lead you in your choice of a new music minister.

March 01, 2009 - Msg 70665: Good Sabbath porch. Hope you are all well.
I have had the week from heck here friends. I just can't go into all the details, but needless to say I pray I don't have another one like it again. Prayers from you prayer warriors would be much appreciated.

I just read Paul Harvey has gone home. That saddens me. I loved hearing his news reports. He had a way of being upbeat and positive regardless of the story. We could use more of that today me thinks.

Me-They, so sorry to read of the passing og that young man. It is so sad when someone so young passes away. I remember when I was 14, a good friend of mine contracted spinal menengitis and passed away. On top of all the sadness we all felt at his passing, there was also a concern for a short period that it may have been contagious, and all of us were at risk. But that proved to not be the case. Prayers for his family and friends as they deal with this loss.

No preachin for me today. My Lady is ailing, and I'm staying home to tend to her. Bless her heart.

March is finally here, and with it hopefully warmer temps and melting snow. None too soon for my aching old bones.

Well best go get some things done around here. Y'all be blessed. And New Neighbor, thanks for letting us sleep in yesterday. You usually bellow and wake us all up.

Possum, glad Laci is doing better. Give her a hug for me.

Asa

March 01, 2009 - Msg 70666: Hi All.

"They" say we are expecting snow too. Yeah, yeah,I'll believe it when I see it. Hope so!
Safe travels Rev.
Wanted to congratulate the Me-Theys on the impending arrival of a baby girl- great news! I'll be thinking of some 4 letter girl names. We've already taken some of the good ones: Nora,Veda,Erin,Evie,& Laci! How about Lily? Or Sara (for Mayberry)?!

March 01, 2009 - Msg 70670: Afternoon porch, no preaching for me today either, I had to work this morning. So far, we've had rain and snow both but the temps are falling so I'm sure we'll get the white stuff before it's over with. I'll be glad when spring gets here. But I've got a pot of veggie soup going, and just took some cinnamon buns out of the oven. Coffee will be ready in a minute so if ya'll are hungry come on over. The Hallmark channel is having a Golden Girls marathon on today and I cant imagine why but my hubby already retired to his room to watch his hunting stuff. I cant imagine why LOL Ya'll have a wonderful Sunday. Love and prayers to you all--Salty Dog

March 01, 2009 - Msg 70671: Oh yeah, one more thing. I totally agree with you all about the whole High School Reunion thing. I'm so tired of it already and it's just now starting. March 02, 2009 - Msg 70676: Well, I guess I am the first one up. Where we goin' for breakfast?

It's downright chilly here in South Texas this morning (just like I like it). Have plenty to do today but will try to check in from time to time. Bruce decided not to get rid of my computer just yet until he buys the new one (whew).

Possum, I'm not so sure Golden Girls beats hunting shows. I could never get into GG...thinking of those old gals and their s#x lives (especially promiscuous Blanche) gives me the creeps so I just pass that one on by. It is like "Old Girls Gone Wild" or something...yuck.

Better go...

March 02, 2009 - Msg 70677: Uh...no offense to anyone over 60, of course. ;)

March 02, 2009 - Msg 70678: Good morning Porch! Boy it's cold here on my end of the porch this morning, a whole 16 degrees! We didn't get all that snow we were hearing about, thank goodness. How about the rest of you? I agree with all the rest of you too, do people actually watch that stupid High School Reunion show?
Prayers for those that need them, I'm off to get ready to work for a while, then back upstairs and work on my stained glass for a while.
Asa how is Mrs. Asa this morning? And Rev hope you're being careful out in that weather. Me-They please check in, I've been worried about you.

March 02, 2009 - Msg 70682: Ok, now I'm going to start fussing about Hallmark Channel, bad enough that they recently replaced one of the Waltons eps with I Love Lucy, now this morning, they replaced the other Waltons hour with Golden Girls!! I mean, please! the Golden Girls! Just burns my biscuits!
*Mavis

March 02, 2009 - Msg 70683: Good morning, porch. Just got home from work, and I'm beat to the socks. I'm headed for my bed in just a minute.

Well, call me crazy, but I like the Golden Girls. To me, they're a bit like the comic character, Maxine. Just over-the-top and outrageous enough to be funny. Yes, Blanche was a tramp, but she was a lovable one. You just couldn't take her seriously. Sofia spoke her mind, as old ladies often do, and pretty much did as she pleased. Dorothy was one of life's losers - forever paying the price for bad choices early in life, but still hopeful that someday her prince would come. Rose - well, Rose was just hilarious. When she'd get started on a St. Olaf story, I would drop whatever I was doing to listen. I read somewhere that a significant amount of that was ad-libbed by Betty White, and at times you could see it in the reaction of the others. They didn't know what was coming next. The people's names, and other "Swedish" words she made up - like the musical instrument called a "gerflugel bugle" or some such. Then there was the story of the Great Herring War. Funny stuff! I also thought it was nice that three of the women, even Blanche, had been in solid, committed marriages until death intervened. Only Dorothy had a broken marriage, and that was because Stanley had strayed, not Dorothy.

To each his or her own - that's what makes the world go around, or so I'm told. I think we're all pretty much in agreement on the vapid High School Reunion. That's the dumbest thing TVLand has done yet, and that's saying a lot.

Be blessed, all. --Romeena

March 02, 2009 - Msg 70684: Well Ro, I guess I'm crazy too I love the Golden Girls. I remember as a kid waching that show with my grandma and great aunt and they would just be laughing out loud over them. One of my favorite lil parts to that show, is how Sophia always has her purse with her no matter what time of day or what they're into. And it's always the same little purse too. Just one of the little quirky things I think make that show so funny. Well we had about 3 or 4 inches of snow now the sun is out but boy is it COLD. My little dog went out to potty and she only made it about 2 minutes lol bless her heart. Hope ya'll have a good Monday stay warm-Salty Dog

March 02, 2009 - Msg 70685:
"Good Day America, stand by for NEWS."
Boy will I miss that. He was such a good man.
Now i know how it feels to see a generation pass.
I'm sure people experince it in each generation,
like when all the original 12 apostles were gone,
or when the founding fathers of our country were gone, and now we see the greats of our time moving on home, D J Kennedy, EV Hill, Paul Harvey,
Ronald Reagan, Carlton Heston,Billy Graham retiring, Dr Dobson retiring (friday), and so
many other notable names of our time moving on.
And who are we replacing them with? That's the scary part. Pray and step up my friends, or someone ELSE will. Don't forget Plato's famous words of wisdom.
It is to be 90 here today! Way too hot for this early! Saw a spring game yesterday and all I can say is thank God for SHADE.
TOM- very funny comments! Thanks I needed A smile! (:
Prayers,
