February 18, 2009 - Msg 70446: President Obama is scheduled for a visit here in Canada on Thursday. It's only a six hour visit and many Canadians are getting all excited. They have bus loads driving up to Ottawa (Canadian equivalent of Washington D.C.) even though there is no guarantee they will even glimpse the president because of the extraordinary security measures. I'm sure glad I'm nowhere near Ottawa.

For such a short visit, why doesn't he just use a webcam and save the taxpayers some money to pay his stimulus bill?

Someone call Dudley Dooright of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He's the Canadian equivalent of Deputy Barney Fife. (Anyone remember him from the Bullwinkle cartoon show?)

February 18, 2009 - Msg 70447: Yes, PH, I remember Dudley Dooright. He had the big swept-back pompadour hairdo, and the exaggerated, thrust-out manly jaw, if I remember correctly. You know, that was a funny show. Remember Snidely Whiplash, the villain? And Rocky, the flying squirrel, who wore a leather old-timey aviator's helmet, presumably because he was a flying squirrel. Lots of very cleverly delivered satire in that show, much of which went over the kids' heads, but there was plenty that they did understand, and it was funny. Sure beat the socks off the too-mature, suggestive garbage that's fed to our kids today. I guess there are some good ones - I know my grandsons love Spongebob, and he seems harmless enough.

I used to watch Scooby-doo and the Flintstones every afternoon after school.Some of the stuff they have on for kids is not so great. There is a network called "The N", it says it's for tween's and teens, but, there is some very controversial content on the show "Degrassi". It's a show about a fictional middle school and high school. But, there is alot of talk about "alternative lifestyles' that is just too much info, if you know what I'm saying. She didn't have many ear infections when she was a baby but now she has had three in the last six months...go figure. I don't get it. Seems she gets one everytime she gets a virus, even if she doesn't have cold symptoms or a runny nose. I don't like it a bit because she really hurts when she gets them and the drops they give you seem to make it worse.

Think I will try to doze on the couch until she wakes up again.

I think I've solved a little problem around here. My granddaughter loves daisies, and wanted them incorporated into the flowers in the yard for her wedding, if possible. Without thinking, I told her I would have some growing. I have several clumps of Shasta daisies already out there, which bloom beautifully every year, and planned on just planting a few more. What I forgot is that they don't bloom until mid-summer, and the wedding is April 11.

So, I've been scouring my favorite mail-order garden centers, and digging through catalogs. I've finally found a plant called "Leucanthemum", which looks just pretty much like a daisy to me. White petals arranged spoke-like, with a yellow center. Yep, that's a daisy, or close enough. The good news is, it blooms in mid-to-late spring, so I have at least a fair chance of getting some in bloom by early April. She also wanted the little wild winecups, as they are her fiance's favorite, but no chance there. They bloom on second-year plants, do not transplant well, and do very poorly in the garden. They're strictly a wildflower. So, we will substitute some wine-colored impatiens, to be interspersed with the "daisies" and I think both bride and groom will be happy. I wanted to put some white amaryllis in a big wooden planter box outside the sunroom windows, but no one seems to have white amaryllis bulbs right now. In fact, very few places even have amaryllis in any color. People have come to associate them with Christmas, it seems, and since you can force them into bloom whenever you want them, it's easy to have them at Christmas. I did!!

Boo, has Erin ever had tubes put in her ears? We finally had to do that with Heather when she was about Erin's age. One ear infection after another until they put the tubes in, and that fixed it. The tubes eventually fell out, but she didn't have any more infections, even after they came out.

What on earth do you suppose motivates TVLand to run that vapid "High School Reunion" show? It is running back to back all evening. I've surfed past it several times, and caught enough to know that I don't care to watch the whole thing. Stupid, gratuitous, sappy stuff. They'll absolutely beat our ears down with it, too. Go figure.

"Oreganoman", that's perfect MDC...boy, that oregano sounds even better than Vicks. I will pick some up at the GNC.

Poor Erin was up ALL night crying with her ear. I gave her Advil, Tylenol, codeine, eardrops, you name it (except oregano). She was drop off to sleep for about 5 minutes and then wake up crying and sometimes screaming, begging me to do something for her. It was awful. I woke Bruce at 5am and he took over for me and I got some sleep. He made an appointment for her and took her to the doctor this morning. They still aren't back. Boy, I don't want to keep going through this. It is tough on a parent to see their child in pain for hours. If tubes are the answer, tubes it will be. I am wondering if her adenoids might be swelling when she gets sick and blocking her eustachian tubes and causing the infection. She might need to have them out or something...we'll see.

Better go. The house is a mess and the laundry is piling up, and wouldn't you know Possum went out of town and can't help me with it. :-(

February 20, 2009 - Msg 70484: Thank you, REV. Erin is much better tonight. She does have an ear infection and something called "Glue Ear"...I never heard of it till today. It is caused by a blockage in the tubes in the ear, and fluid builds up in the inner ear until it starts to leak from the ear drum, or until a tear forms in the eardrum and releases the fluid and pressure. Sounds terrible, but with the leaking comes relief from the pain. She took a nap this afternoon and when she woke up I noticed all of this sticky, orange-tinted fluid coming from the ear. It was in her hair and on her pillow. Strange...it was not something either of my kids ever had before. The ear is still draining but it's just more of a clear fluid now. She is sleeping like a baby and no more fever, praise the Lord. I am hoping for a good night's sleep tonight. :-)

MDC, I was thinking that the next time Erin gets a virus, I am going to start putting the oregano oil in her ears to prevent an infection the next time, hopefully. Thanks for the tip. If it works, it will be thirty dollars well-spent.

It is very peaceful here tonight (I guess I am noticing it in contrast to last night's crying). It's dark and quiet and I hear the hum of Sean's fan and it is very relaxing...(big yawn)...goodnight my beloved Mayberry...

Thanks for all your prayers for Zach. The good news is that he survived the procedure. Now his numbers need to rise.

BOO: I do not know the diagnosis. The Mrs. was speculating, too. All we know at this point is its life threatening. From what we have been told, he became ill over the weekend, went downhill, and ended up in the hospital. He's in the pediatric ICU at Johns Hopkins now, so he couldn't be in better hands. Please continue your prayers and I wuill keep you updated as the school does me.

I love sleeping to the sound of a fan! Once I get used to it in the summer, I usually leave it on past the pont of actually needing it in the fall and turn it away from me so I don't get cold but can still hear it. Crazy, huh? Well, it drives the Mrs. crazy anyway.

I know what you mean about the fan, M-T. If you get used to having one on when you sleep, you miss the sound. I am that way about Bruce's machine that he wears at night for his sleep apnea. It make a very soothing, sort of "whoosing" sound and I have trouble sleeping without it.

Well, Erin seems back to normal today, thankfully. I have alot of catching up to do, and maybe I will actually get to do it.

Oh, I wanted to give you all an update on my parent's home. I told you that they had to strip out the walls and replace all plumbing and electric and even replace some of the floors that had rotted through. They are almost finished with everything and are painting and putting up the trim. It looks great. It is nice to see the old place get the TLC it has needed for so long. My nephew and his family will be moving in at the end of the month.

Zach’s family is distraught and praying hard by his side as he fights for life. That I understand, and hope I never have to experience.

But last evening the Mrs. was telling me about her day. Now in the NICU, she experiences some of what you do, ROMEENA. She told me the ongoing story of this poor baby. Last week, the crack and heroin addicted mom came in with a man and had her premie baby. The baby still is on opiates because he was born addicted. The mom had to ask the nurse later what she had named the baby because she couldn’t remember. The mom checked out ADA the next day and hasn’t been heard from since. The man who had been with her wanted a paternity test to see if he really was the father since the woman had "been around" (she’s probably a prostitute to feed her habit). He disappeared for a few days, too. He was in the neighborhood and came back yesterday saying he wanted the baby. Why was he in the neighborhood? Because his girlfriend (another woman) was in L&D! Only that baby wasn’t his.

What is it with people? How can people be so hard-hearted and self-centered, so cruel? I just don’t get it.

While I was typing this I got another e-mail from the school. Zach’s procedure was successful enough that they will be doing the exchange again today. His stats continue to rise. Please continue prayer. For him, and for poor kids like the one I mentioned above with jackasses for—and I use the term loosely—parents.

It’s reassuring to know that there are good people like you all in this world. When I get too upset, I remember that.

Unless we live/have lived they life they live, we won't really understand it. I'm sure there are many circumstances that lead to that kind of gross irresponsibilty and pathology....addiction will take people to places we can't even imagine, and my guess is that the "dad" (or possible sp*rm donor) is an addict, too. Pray that the child goes to CPS and is adopted by a loving family.

I guess BOO: I just don't get how the most common sense of decency doesn't register. I believe addiction indeed is a sickness, but not an excuse for abusing children. About CPS, the hospital's (it's a Catholic, charity hospital) didn't want to release the child to the man who may or may not be the father, but the city said yes, so that's how that went.

One can only hope that dad has a somewhat decent mother out there who is willing to raise his child. Many of the kids I see in rehab are cared for by grandparents because of their parent's addiction.

I guess it's kind of like understanding homos#xuality. There is no way I can understand it because I have never experienced those inclinations. In order to understand, I would have to experience those things. In many cases, I guess I am thankful that I don't understand. That doesn't mean I don't care, I am just thankful that I don't have that struggle. I think even homos#xuals would tell you that it isn't an easy lifestyle.

When I think about drug addiction, I think of it this way. It's rather like having your foot caught in one of those bear traps. You are suffering and want to be free, but in order to be free you would have to chew your own foot off. It's like being caught and miserable and terrified of getting free at the same time. Or, imagine that you are drowning. You are fighting to get to the surface for a breath of air. Your lungs are burning and you crave that breath of air like you have never craved anything in your life. At that moment, you would do anything for it. I think that is alot like drug addiction. Now, some are morally strong enough to get help and go through the detox and recovery process, but it seems like most aren't or those that do relapse over and over. Very tragic for so many!

You're right, there is never a good excuse to abuse a child, M-T. The bad part is that drug addicts want their kids just like we do, and are almost always selfish enough to keep them and teach them how to follow in their footsteps. Just remember that one day we will all give an account to God for how we lived this life. Nobody gets away with cruelty, especially to children.

Better get moving towards the washing machine (groan)...

February 20, 2009 - Msg 70504: Good afternoon, everybody! Good grief, Me-They, I can't believe they actually released that child to that man, without any proof that he was the father! What on earth were they thinking?? I find it morbidly fascinating that CPS and courts all over the country will release children to people who have absolutely no business with them, yet most animal shelters are very, very selective about the people who adopt animals. And they should be. I just wish CPS and the courts would learn from them.

Please, folks, continue to pray for Miss Betty. She has refused any further chemo treatments, and has been moved from the hospital to a place called Hearthstone here in town. It's a retirement residence/nursing facility, and she is under hospice care. She said she weighed the misery caused by the chemo against the extremely slim hope it offered, and decided it just wasn't worth it. As she put it - "I know where I'm going, I've looked forward to it all my life, so I'm ready to get on with it." She's there now at Hearthstone, in a comfortable, pretty, home-like room, holding court for the dozens of visitors each day. She's planning her own funeral, and discusses it as freely as if it was a birthday party, which in a sense, it is. I suppose that in reality, Miss Betty doesn't need our prayers, other than to pray for freedom from pain. It's we, her friends, who need prayer as we prepare to give her up. It's not going to be easy.

I hear that the list of pallbearers and honorary pallbearers has exceeded 22 names so far. These are all the young "preacher boys" who have interned at our church over the years, and gone on to positions of responsibility all over the country. Each, in his turn, was "mothered" by Miss Betty - fed, advised, encouraged, prayed for and loved by her, and sent out into the world to represent Christ. She lost her beloved husband, Ted, to kidney failure about 25 years ago, and the church has been her family ever since. It was my great privilege to be Ted's nurse on several admissions, and it was on those occasions that I learned to love the kind and courageous Miss Betty.

Well, I'm off to pick up a buddy and we're going to eat shrimp and crab legs at East Buffet. I love that place! Be blessed, all. --Romeena

May her passing be one of peace and even joy and may the Lord comfort those who love and will miss her. It sounds to me that she absolutely made the right decision in refusing the chemo. I understand that it is sometimes needed to control pain as tumors grow, but if she can do without it, I think she is wise to do so, and the acceptance she exhibits is really inspiring.

Also you mentioned about the fan in your room. We are the same way so we went and bought some air purifiers. We keep one in the bed room that we run all night and one in the living room that we run during the day. We love them for the noise at night but they also are really good air purifiers.

Glad you are back safe, Possum. Prayers for your sister. You know, I was talking to God about her while I was in the car the other day and I got choked up. Not sure why, just felt alot of emotion while praying for her. Hope things get better for her (and Kim, too).

Never heard of Hank the Cowdog, Ky girl?? Really cute little paperback chapter books for kids. I would guess they appeal mostly to middle school-aged kids. They are a bit too difficult for Erin to read on her own but she loves me to read them to her. They are about this cowdog, Hank, who refers to himself as "Head of Security" on a ranch. He has a "deputy", so to speak, named Drover, who is a real chicken and takes his orders from Hank. Hank is alot like Barney and tends to be sensitive and tries to act like a big shot. Some other characters that seem to return in the books are, Beulah (Hank's true love, who is "runnin' with" another dog named Plato), some very rowdy cyotes who talk like native americans and are pretty rough, and a couple of buzzards named Wallace and Junior (Junior is a stuttering buzzard). And then there are a couple of ranch hands that make an appearance now and then. Really cute books that I get a kick out of even more than the kids, I think. I think there are currently 50 Hank books out there.

February 21, 2009 - Msg 70522: Glad to hear that TOM! I took care of my neice, Emily (she is a year old) most of the day today and she fell asleep on my lap in the recliner. She slept there for over 2 hours while I rocked and watched Gone With the Wind on TCM. It was a really nice way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon. When Emily is sleeping is about the only time she will stand for much cuddling...she's much too busy for that. She is still calling me "Doo-Doo", by the way. She can't say Aunt Ju-Ju yet (baby-speak for Aunt Julie).

You are more than welcome, Possum. I know it must be tough for you...you have certainly had your share of struggles lately.

Hope all is well.
The miss and I had such a lovely valentines last sat, I want to share it. Married over 26 years feel like I never do her the justice she deserves on Valentines day so I pulled out the stops. Got her a cute white teddy bear holding a heart asking her to be my valentine, put it in sack and added a vase of red tulips.
Saturday after noon while she was getting ready for dinner, i put on a dinner jacket brought her to our bedroom where I keep my Fender Stratocaster and amp, played and sang(tried my best at least hehe) the old Eric Clapton tune "Wonderful Tonight" while my daughter video'd it. Then gave her her Valentines gift (GPS w/mp3 for her CTS) and we had a wonderful dinner at Market Place in Fort Smith. I think we feel in love all over again. I texted all five of our children and told them that I was in love with their Mother.
God has been so good to us. 26 years ago we were near divorce SEVERAL times. Then we let Christ into our life, and all I can say is God is wonderful to us.
