I think that's some sound advice Ro. I'm sure sometimes well meaning folks who care for someone who is ailing don't realize they can be more an hinderence than a help when visiting the sick. Then there are others who can be just a pain in the rear for general purposes. Personally, I hate going to Hospitals. I really struggle visiting folks who are ailing. And unless it is someone I know well, or a family memeber who I know will appreciate the visit, I typically will not go there. I guess folks are of different mindsets, but I'm not sure when they are really feeling poorly, how much they want to be visited. I've been blessed in that I have never had to spend a night in the hospital, so maybe I shouldn't speak on the subject, but I know when I'm home sick with something, visitors are about the last thing I need. I think it's because I feel the need to be a good host, and put on a smiley face or whatever, when all I really want is to be left alone. But my opinion of that could differ I guess if I were in the hospital for long.

Des, what a sad story. It just breaks my heart to see family's falling apart like that. I have always felt that family's are a reflection of our society. And when a family is functioning like the one you describe, that satan has claimed victory there. I do hope they can pull together and get the help they need.

Well we have almost two feet of snow sitting on the ground (some old, some new) but they are calling for temps to rise this afternoon and a chance of rain. But it won't last long as they say it will turn to snow by tonight, and all day tomorrow. And even some on Wdenesday. But being the end of February, I know things are about to change soon. Spot's talk about lawnmower gas reminds me I better get thinking about prepping my mower for the season. Need to change the oil, get new blades for it, new plugs for it, (she's a two cylinder, she'll take two) and heck, maybe even give her a good wash. Boy I love the idea of spring pretty fine. :)

Romeena, it appears that you left out "ALT" when you mentioned the word "key".
Here's an additional tip for those of you who use a laptop. You might also have to hold down the FN key along with ALT when you press 7, 8 and 9 in succession.

February 16, 2009 - Msg 70362: Good afternoon, porch. I'm pooped! Joe and his helper just left, and we planted 26 flats of flowers and three rose bushes. Still have another rose to plant, but I can't decide where I want it. Joe is coming back later this week and bringing a power washer to clean the flagstone walkway and the flagged courtyard up front, so he'll plant it then.

PH, I did put the ALT in, but forgot that the < and > signs are signals, and I enclosed the ALT in them - don't ask me why, I don't know. So, it just didn't register. I think I'm only half ept.

Boy, the yard looks good. It's really shaping up. If we don't get a hard freeze, and have plenty of warm weather for the next six weeks, things should be gorgeous for the wedding. There's still more to do. I've requested at least eight flats of impatiens, probably more like ten, but it's too early to plant them. They're not even in the garden centers yet. Just the minute they're available, though, I'll get them in the ground, because they will need time to mature, and time is getting short.

The grass is greening up, and some of the non-evergreen shrubs are budding. The evergreens are starting to refresh their foliage too, they'll be looking pretty very soon.

I am going to start a moulage here...I read something today about Eva Longoria founding a group called (in English) Parents against Cancer (or something like that) and the paper said it supports "Latino children with cancer". Don't misunderstand me, any group that helps any child with cancer is a wonderful thing. Here's what I am thinking, though...it seems strange to me that any foundation would help only children of a certain race. If I were to start a foundation to help only white children with cancer (not that I would), I think the outcry would be unbelievable. Does it seem to anyone else that the white folks are the only ones that can be discriminated against and it's considered "politically correct"? Something about a foundation that would only help children of a certain race, seems immoral to me. It's a free country and people can put their money where they wish but it rubs me the wrong way (and if it supported "whites only" I would feel the same way). I think it's outrageous. I may be wrong, though, and will consider other opinions.

February 17, 2009 - Msg 70388: Good morning, porch! Boo, I'll join your moulage. (surprise!) Can you imagine a "Miss White America" contest? Or a White Chamber of Commerce? Miss Black America and the Black Chamber of Commerce started during the old segregation days, and were justified then. However, since we have had some black Miss Americas, and every major city's Chamber of Commerce is mixed, perhaps it's time to do away with the "black only" ones. Can you imagine an organization called "La Raza Blanca"? (The White Race) Yes, for you northerners, there is a large and active group which calls itself "La Raza" (The Race), and it's for Hispanics. How about a United Whites Only College Fund? Or a NAAWP?

Now, like Andy said, folks have a right to have their clubs, and they surely have the right to say who they do or don't let into those clubs, and I'm all for that. Only problem is, that doesn't apply to white folks. It used to, but it sure doesn't anymore, nor should it. Let white people form a group and exclude people of color, or even certain members of the white race (Jews) and the battle will be on, as it should be. I freely admit that in our history whites did all of that. People of color certainly were discriminated against, excluded, denied entry, refused service - all those awful things. The discrimination against Jewish people was a bit more subtle - they were rarely denied physical entry into restaurants and such, but membership in many organizations was denied, and there was certainly discrimination in housing.

All of that was (and still is, wherever it occurs) just awful and should never have happened. However, it did, and there are still a few die-hard ignoramusses who try to perpetuate it. Those instances should be nipped, nipped in the bud!

Most of the folks today have moved past all that. Unfortunately, there are still those among the groups who suffered such discrimination, who are simply not willing to let go of the past and all get along. They want to keep the race card in the deck, so it can be whipped out and played whenever they feel it would give them an advantage. Guilt is a powerful thing. Even the devil knows that, and uses it against us all the time. Most white people still feel a bit of guilt for the sins of past generations, and so we permit the use of the race card to influence our responses to situations.

I think it's time for us all to "get over it". We can't change the past, but we don't have to perpetuate it, or let it poison our relationships today. Instead, we should learn from it.

Incidentally, discrimination can work both ways. Ladies, did you ever walk into a black women's beauty salon? I did, on a business errand, and you would have thought I had three heads, the way everyone stared at me. Some of the stares were curious, some amused, and some were downright unfriendly. I was greeted at the desk with "What do YOU want?" I finished my errand and got out of there, because I definitely didn't feel welcome. It was a good lesson and reminder for me.

I hear ya,Ro.Remember,I was the only white person at my last high school reunion,and have been (along with my sister) the only white person at a black funeral. However,I was warmly accepted at both events.I can imagine it's a different atmosphere entirely in a black hair salon though.It works both ways-I've been in a "white" barber shop when a black man & his son came through the door.He looked around,and high tailed it outta there! I would have loved for him to have actually come in and asked for a haircut.Curious as to what would've transpired. Because the prejudice does work both ways,for sure.But,like I said,he yanked his son out of the doorway and took off like a mad dog was after him!

I, for one, feel anger towards the actions of white people towards other races, but I don't feel guilty. I don't like racism that comes from any direction. You know, I was going through the channels on Sunday and happened on a program celebrating Black Gospel in America. The lovely auditorium was filled with beautiful black Americans and the music was amazing! I couldn't help but get a lump in my throat thinking about how the ancestors of these same people were enslaved and abused. I thought to myself, 'I wish those slave owners and traders could see the children of those humans that they enslaved...how God has blessed them through it all and prospered their future generations'. Within our American culture today, they are the best of atheletes, the best of artists and musicians, and a wonderful picture of the power of freedom. I thank God for it, and for those willing to fight for that freedom.

Boo, perhaps "guilt" isn't quite the right word, but it comes as close as I can get. Regret for the actions of white people generations back, I guess. I've done nothing to feel guilty about, it's true, but I'm still sorry that wretched period in our history exists. However - and everyone please cut me some slack and understand how I mean what I'm about to say - the whites weren't alone in the guilt for the slave trade. The Africans who were taken into slavery and brought to America were sold to the white men by other black tribes. At least that's my understanding of it. Tribal wars resulted in the taking of captives, who were then sold to the white slave traders. Shameful, on both sides. Another point is also true. Most black Americans today enjoy a much higher standard of living than the descendants of the people from which they came. Many Africans today live a miserable, eked-out existence, disease is rampant, tribal wars still rage - most black folks living here today wouldn't return to their "roots" for all the tea in China. The road may have been rough, but the destination was an improvement. That doesn't excuse the slave trade, or the poor treatment of black Americans after the emancipation, or even the prejudicial treatment that still exists in some small, unenlightened pockets of America today, but it does make it a bit easier to take. At least, I hope so.

I work with some very bright, well educated young black women at the hospital, and we have had some lively conversations. They seem to trust me, and are very open and honest about their feelings. Some are Africans from Nigeria mostly, but most are American-born. As I said, we've had some rousing conversations! --Romeena

Well Ro, one thing that did come out of the horrible circumstances of slavery, is that the slaves heard the gospel and seemed to relate to the suffering savior and came to Him. Also, many African christians are being horribly persecuted and even crucified.

I remember working with a wonderful African who had not been living here for long. She was beautiful and so nice. We used to tell stories at night when things were slow. She used to talk about how foreign American modesty was to her. In her village, people often didn't wear clothes and she said that you could drive through town and see naked men bathing in the water holes. She talked about how breasts are s#xualized in this country, but not so where she is from. She said it would not be uncommon for a new mom to be instructed in breast feeding by an elderly neighbor man! haha. Many women in her village didn't even wear shirts. So funny how different cultures have different views on things.

Well, SPOT, did you watch American Idol tonight? I was not that impressed.

Just my 2 cents worth, but, I went to a doctors appt. one time when i was out of town,didn't know anything about the doctor, just almost had pneumonia and had to get some antibiotics. Anyway, walked into the doctors office, noticed all the patients in the waiting room were black, didn't think much about it I felt so bad.Anyway, they were all looking at me funny,then I was called back. The doctor was black, and he looked totally shocked to see me. I could tell he wasn't comfortable with this situation, and, I was happy to get my prescriptions and get out of there. I was just thinking about it the other day and wondering why we never see it in syndication. My brother in California met Karen Valentine once on an airplane and said she was was a real nice girl. He also played in a charity golf tournament once with Clint Eastwood...I think I may have mentioned that before. He said Clint was quiet and polite. I guess when you live in California, you have more opportunities to see celebrities. David (my bro) also played golf with Charles M Shultz on more than one occasion, years ago. David has always been an avid golfer and now he actually coaches a woman's golf team at the college where he is ahtletic director. Anyway, thanks for the memory...I had not thought of Karen Valentine in many years....wonder what happened to her?

Better go pull Erin out of bed. She seems to finally be back to her normal, active and sassy self.

February 18, 2009 - Msg 70418: Good morning, porch. Gosh, it seems so strange to hear about all the snow. It's 57 degrees here, and the grass is really getting green. Another week, and it will need to be mowed. All those little flowers we planted are so pretty! They're still small, young plants, but will soon be big colorful mounds. From my window, at this moment, I can see seven squirrels. Three in my yard, and four running through the trees in the yard behind mine. When there are no leaves, I can easily see them as they chase each other around back there. Those trees are about 150 feet away, but with my new lens implants I can see them clearly. I can even see the ones in the trees behind the houses across the street from the ones behind my house. Does that make sense? I can't estimate that distance, but it's a long way, probably about 150 yards!

Medical technology is amazing sometimes. I remember when getting cataracts ultimately meant blindness. Then they learned to remove the cataract, but there were no implanted lenses. The person had to wear glasses with half-inch thick lenses, that gave barely-acceptable distance vision, and very little close-up vision. Now the lenses are implanted, and I don't even need reading glasses. My vision is 20/20, in all ranges. God is good.

Boo, I'm glad Erin is feeling better, and will pray for your dad. Asbestos in his lungs? That can't be good.

February 18, 2009 - Msg 70425: Good morning everyone. It’s snow…no raining…no sleeting…no, it is snowing…here. The weatherman can’t seem to make up his mind. Maybe the weatherman is a weatherwoman ;-). With a crack like that, I’m bound to loose my Alan Alda fan club membership.

We watched “The Church Organ” and “The Return of Barney Fife” last evening. I like both of these color episodes. One thing that bothers me about the episode about the organ is how Clara refuses to play with an out of tune organ. I understand it would be annoying, but it doesn’t seem to be a very good attitude, especially considering the reason for playing to begin with. Even though Barney was a rat to Thelma Lou by leaving town, it still gets to me at the end of the reunion episode when he and Andy are sitting in the car at the end. All I can think of is who else would put up with his shenanigans? Poor Barney’s fear of commitment seems to result in a life spent alone. Sad.

BOO: You’re welcome. I really did have a crush on Karen Valentine when I was young. Next to my Kindergarten teacher, she was my first unrequited love. And certainly not my last. It’s funny that you mention about it not being released on DVD; I Googled it and found out that season one is being released on March 24. We could have a “Room 222” all-nighter. I’ll bring the pizza (mozarella—it’s my favorite) and little yellow cookies.

ROMEENA: After our discussion about English as a second language I happened to read a letter to the editor in our local paper that got me thinking about another angle. The letter was from someone ticked off about taxpayers paying for English courses for non-speakers. I couldn’t help but think about the other letters from people complaining about the broken English of fast food workers, etc. that I’ve also read recently. This area has a fast growing Hispanic population and it’s becoming a very hot issue.

That got me wondering, how people can expect it both ways? If people don’t want to subsidize English classes for new immigrants at the local public schools and community college, then it stands to reason the immigrants themselves will have to pay. Well that means they will have to work, which requires filling out forms, and probably getting a drivers license. So they will be trying to get a job without speaking good English, then will be working that job not speaking good English. It does take time to learn to speak, read, and write another language. We very well can’t expect them to master it in a few weeks, months, or even a year. So I guess it comes down to either helping them out one way, or the other. As long as we accept immigration (legal) we must accept the consequences of that.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying people shouldn’t help themselves when they get here—they need to learn the language—and I’m also not saying we shouldn’t allow immigration. All of us were products of immigration at one time. It’s kind of selfish to think that now that we’re here we need to slam the door. Anyway, I never thought of it that way before.

POOR HORATIO: Ditto! I think it's because even though we don't always agree with one another, we respect and care about one another. And we're not too sensitive (who you callin' sensitive?!?).

Yes Ro, he has asbestos in his lungs and if you could see his chest films you would think he was full of lung cancer. He has had several work friends that have died of Mesothelioma but he has been very blessed and so far, so good. He worked for years for Reynolds Aluminum and they knowingly exposed their employees to asbestos so they had a huge class-action law suit that dad has benefitted from over the years, and it enabled him to do some traveling and some of the things he enjoys doing. Unfortunately he lives with a certain dread that he will eventually develope lung cancer and that weighs on his mind. I told him that if he hasn't gotten lung cancer after having asbestos in his lungs for over 30 years, I doubt it would develope now (I hope, anyway). Poor thing just has been pretty miserable for a few years now. He isn't ready to go, though, and said as much to me today. Sad how the spirit wants to go on living but the body gives out.

MDC, your comment about the National Geographic reminded me of an episode of Happy Days when they mentioned looking at National Geographic because it contained pictures of "naked pygmies".
Andy seemed to have quite a fascination with "the Geographics"...let's hope he liked reading the articles. ;)

Me-They, I agree completely. If immigrants are willing to do what it takes to learn English (and it's not easy) then I think it's not too much to ask of a community to provide the classes. I think I've mentioned before that my church offers weekly ESL classes at no cost, and even serves refreshments. I would love to teach in those classes, but because I often have to work on the night before, my attendance would be irregular and that wouldn't be good. My landscaper's most trusted and capable helper is Hispanic. He's smart, willing, a hard worker and dependable. He's also illegal. Under the current restrictions, getting legal is just about impossible. I'm not a supporter of President Hussein's new amnesty proposal for a lot of reasons, but I must admit that it apparently has offered hope to Jorge, because he told me last week that he and his wife are now attending ESL classes two nights a week. By the way, he works four nights a week as a fry cook at a local chicken place, in addition to working with my landscaper five days a week. Also, he and his wife clean houses on the weekends. They cleaned my rent house when it went vacant, and did an excellent job. No one can accuse them of not working, and obviously they're interested in fitting in, since they're learning the language. I'm all for amnesty in cases like that, but Pres H's current proposal is waaaay too liberal. Jorge would survive a background check, but he won't have to, because the current proposal really doesn't include one. That's pretty scary. The answers come hard, don't they?

85 degrees, huh? We're at 73, which will probably be about our high for today. Beautiful out there, so sunny and pretty. Squirrels everywhere! I buy peanuts in the shell, and also buy pre-cracked pecans. I love them both, and if I buy the shelled ones, I eat too many. By having to shell them myself, I don't eat nearly so many. Naturally, there are bits and pieces of peanuts and pecans both left in the shells when I'm finished. I usually empty my bowl of shells into a flowerbed instead of into the trash. The squirrels come and pick through them for the leftover pieces (I deliberately don't pick the shells very clean). Then in a few days, I take a spade and turn the area over, burying the shells, where they decompose and enrich the soil. Waste not, want not. --Romeena
