Hahaha! I took the test, and am also 100% Dixie (surprise, surprise). That was fun. I thought about some very subtle differences, too. For instance, I would say "I found it down at the creek." My Michigan MIL would say, "I found it down to the crick." The creek/crick difference is well known, but the at/to difference is more subtle.
Worked last night, very long night, and came home and slept all day! I meant to sleep until about noon and get up, but I didn't even hear the phone ring when Eloise called me about 12:30. Drat! She wanted to go to the drug store and get a hamburger, and that would have been good. Well, maybe we can go tomorrow.
We have a very old drug store in old downtown Irving, Big State Drugs. They have an old-fashioned soda fountain, make wonderful malts - the kind in the metal can and they pour it into a soda glass, then give you the can too, which has at least as much in it as the glass. They have a counter, and about six booths, and some old-timey soda-fountain tables and chairs, the kind made of scrolled metal. Charming! The big thing though is their burgers. They're gooood!! They toast the bun on the grill, put plenty of 'mater and pickle and onion and lettuce on them. Their onion rings and fries are pretty delish, too. We manage to eat there at least once a month.
They have a lot of old memorabilia stuff in there, too. Does anyone remember the "Hoffman Easy-Vision Television"? Big wooden cabinet, small screen (about 15") and the screen was tinted green, because it was supposed to be easier on your eyes. Everyone looked like they had eaten a bad mushroom or something.
Well, guess I'll go feed Toye Starr, and myself. Got the TV playing (TAGS is on) and I'll just rewind when I'm ready to watch, and then I can zip through the commercials. Love that DVR!

Well, Sterling, glad you are settling in to the new job and that you have an understanding supervisor (that goes a long way). Too bad you have to deal with the smell of smoke. That is hard for us non-smokers to get used to. Take your vitamins!
Had parent=teacher open house last night at Erin's school. It was nice..Erin's class sang a song called, "The Crayon Song" and when they got to the "blue" part she got to hold up a big, blue crayon. She was so excited about it and so proud. The pricipal of the school gave a message out of I John, chapter one and it was really good. He talked about how he had sat in a Baptist church for years and even made fun of his wife for her beliefs, but he had never really met Christ on a personal level. One night, he actually "got it" and repented and asked Christ to save him. He said that he went home a different man that night and went on to be a missionary, then came back to the states to pastor. I thought it was very touching the way he described the change that took place, but also disturbing to think that there are people in church who really haven't experienced what it is to know Jesus and be born again. I grew up in a church like that, so I know it happens. It was very formal and the gospel was not given. When I was born again, I didn't even know what happened to me until I read the story of Jesus and Nicodemus in the gospels! I know that the great grace and mercy of Christ reaches to all and that He said that if anyone would come to Him, he would in "nowise cast him out". I pray that many more who consider themselves Christians the same way they consider themselved "Republican" or American, will desire a relationship with Christ, and not "religion" because there is no comparison, is there? I think I have said this before and I use it when I speak to the girls at rehab, to me, religion is man trying to build a ladder to reach God, but Christianity in it's true form, is God building a ladder (through Christ), reaching down to man. Man's efforts to be good enough will never work, but what we couldn't do, God did for us by sending his Son. Thank God for it! I never get tired of hearing about it and there is nothing I would rather hear from a pulpit than the gospel.
Well, better get a move-on. I will be at Susan's house today while she is at work. I will be taking care of my parents and baby Emily...have mercy! My poor sister is having a tough time. She is the secretary at her church and is having a hard time getting along with the pastor. He is the one I mentioned before, who had a cardiac arrythmia, actually died and was brought back, then had a pacemaker inserted (all at about age 38). Since then, he has been a different man. I don't know if his brain suffered because of a lack of oxygen or what, but he is not the same. She has a hard time hearing what he says from the pulpit and then when they are alone, he says terrible things about people in the church. I think she needs to find another job and get out of that situation. I am praying for her.
Didn't mean to write such a novel, sorry.

Cold and wet here today. It's 32 and drizzly. No ice, just cold and nasty. It's supposed to get colder tonight, though, so I suppose I'll be driving on ice coming home from work in the morning. Yuck.
Sterling, I'm sorry you have to deal with that second-hand smoke. Do people actually smoke in the area in which you work, or is it just what permeates the building?
I suppose hospitals everywhere are totally non-smoking now, but I remember when they weren't. When I first went to work for my hospital 30 years ago, anyone and everyone could smoke there. Patients, visitors, and staff - everyone. I remember doctors smoking at the desk, and there were even ashtrays! Nurses were not allowed to smoke at the desk, but believe me, walking into the breakroom was a choking experience. Now, no smoking is allowed anywhere on the campus, not even outdoors. Not even in the parking lots or the garage. People who take smoke breaks must step off the property and literally stand in the street next to the curb to smoke! That's quite a sight every evening when I'm coming in to work. There stands a pitiful little huddle of people, standing by the curb, puffing away. I think the embarrassment of it all would make me quit.
Amazingly, there are still people - patients and visitors - who think they can go in their bathroom and smoke and no one will know. Can you imagine? In a no-smoking facility, where the air is completely devoid of smoke, one cigarette stinks to high heaven. You can smell them at the desk, from a room at the end of the hall! It's really so funny. That happened one night, and I went to the room where I had reason to suspect it might be happening. I knocked, of course, then entered the room. Smoke was still in the air, and the patient and two visitors were staring at me like spotlighted jackrabbits. I asked if someone had been smoking, and of course, they said no. Since I believe it's best whenever possible to leave someone a way out, I said, "Well, then it must have been another visitor, someone who just left, because their cigarette butt is still floating in the toilet. If they come back, please tell them that smoking is not allowed in the hospital, and violators are subject to a $200 fine, based on Fire Department regulations." Much eye-shifting and "yes, ma'am-ing" and that was the end of it. Too funny!
On other occasions, I've told them that there are extremely sensitive smoke detectors in use on the unit, and then told them the $200 fine thing - which is true, by the way. The smoke detectors, of course, are the nurses' noses, but I don't tell them that.
Well, time for a nap before going in to work. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

I remember those days of smoking in hospitals, Romeena, in fact, when I first started working as a nurse, in 1983, the little hospital I worked in had a small 6 bed ICU that I worked days in. The doctors would open the door, extinguish their cigarettes and then wash their hands at a little sink near the door. There was one doctor, that weighed about 350 lbs and smoked like crazy (he died of a heart attack). He would carry in his cigarette and place it (still lighted) on the edge of the sink so he could pick it up again on his way out. At least they didn't stand over the patient's bed with all the oxygen going! When I started working L&D in a large hospital in 1985, EVERYONE smoked, EVERYWHERE! Nurses smoked at the desk, too. It wasn't allowed in the OR and in the nursery, otherwise, it didn't matter. Hard to believe that now. After so many years, they started banning smoking inside the hospital, but people could smoke in designated areas outside. Well that meant that throughout the very busy shift, nurses would leave us short-handed to go take smoke breaks. Those of us who didn't smoke didn't get breaks. Thankfully, they finally banned smoking on hospital premises. Things have really changed. There are few public places that people can smoke now. I don't think that most smokers realize how difficult it is to be around smoke when you are a non-smoker (some do, though, and are understanding about it). Baby Emily's dad smokes and it wasn't long (she is one and a half) until she was sticking her finger in her mouth and pretending to smoke! He really needs to quit for his children's sake.
Well, I feel like I am now coming down with Bruce's crud and have been sneezing and feeling achy since about noon. I really don't have time to get sick!
Better go.
By the way, Romeena, I really enjoyed the email...LOVED the pictures...wasn't so crazy about the pan flute music, though. ;)

I'm rooting for the Cards on Sunday... Sorry Tom.
Thanks for the pictures, Ro. And thanks for the comments you made on the last page in the archives.

Ro, I work downstairs near the casino itself, and everyone smokes in there, so the smoke goes everywhere. My wife works upstairs and she even gets it. You don't see it so much, but you can sure smell it.
Near where I work they have a non-smoking breakroom, right next to the smoking breakroom. So in essence, it is one big smoking breakroom.
Now don't get me wrong though. Though I am a non-smoker I am not a person who is for forcing businesses to ban smoking. I think every business should have a right to decide whether they want to be non-smoking or smoking(especially bars and restaurants), and the customers can also decide where they want to do business. Now as for working in a place that allows smoking.... ;)
Hazel, you make me ashamed for all my complaining about having a job I don't like while you are so distressed at possibly losing yours. Many prayers for your job situation and that that doesn't happen.

No Thomas A., REV has not checked it. I imagine he is out in the sticks somewhere and doesn't have the opportunity to check in, Lord bless him, wherever he is.
Well, Sterling, we don't have casinos in Texas, and there aren't many places you can smoke here. I think it is wonderful. As far as your job, you might get used to it over time. I remember in college, I had a friend that I carpooled with who smoked (in the car) and at first it bothered me but I actually got used to it and didn't notice. We even became roomates later and she smoked all the time in the apartment. I didn't like the smell of old smoke on clothes, etc., but I didn't mind the smoke (go figure). Now I don't give myself the chance to get used to it. I can smell it a block away and it chokes me.
Romeena, I saw something on the news about Dallas yesterday and a neighborhood in which alot of birds died. They were just lying around in yards and in the street. It was so sad. The report said they could have been given poison.
Well, better get a move-on. The coffee is finished. I never did get the full-blown cold that Bruce had..I just had some body aches and felt tired. I still feel pretty run-down this morning so I think I will take it easy today. It is really cold outside this morning (in the 30's), which won't help the aches, will it? I am starting to see why so many elderly folks come south for the winter!

Mornin' Y'all! My computer has been acting up for about a week now- not wanting to boot up.It freezes & I have to turn it off & restart it,which usually does the trick. This morning though,a black box came up with this:"C:Windows/System32/command.com" And it says: "File not suitable for running MS-DOS & Microsoft Windows applications.Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. I did manage to get online though- thankfully!
Anybody "EPT" enough to tell me what's going on? Where's Poor Horatio when you need a half a boy?!
I am afraid it's gonna crash for good.Don't have the funds to put it in shop,so I'm thinking about running the QuickRestore CD which will reformat the hard drive & should bring computer back to original state. I'd lose lots of stuff (don't know how to save & all that jazz) but my main concern is being cut off from the Porch & my friends. I'd go crazy! Worse than having bats lay eggs in my hair,I'm telling ya! Anyway,I may have to run the Quick Restore & start from scratch. I don't have the original Windows XP CD- my nephew in Atlanta worked on my computer a few years back when it crashed,so don't know what he did.
Well, if anyone has a thought about this, please let me know. I most likely will have to start from scratch again. Thanks, and if I'm not around,y'all will at least know what happened.
Hazel & Sterling-y'all hang in there on the job front. Prayers.
Spot,I'll send ya an e-mail!No,I haven't been e-mailing Asa (well, maybe just once!Ha! But HE e-mailed me first!) Now,don't get no rumors going- he sent me some pretty pictures was all.
Boo,hope you feel better. Y'all wish me luck in keeping my computer going!

HAZEL: Prayers for your situation. Many are in your situation and I hope that Obama, Congress, Wall Street, and all the other major players can put their pride aside, pull together, and steer a direction out of this mess.
TOM and KY GIRL: My son Chad inherits a lot his clothes from friends of ours who have three boys. They are from PA and are die-hard Steelers fans. So Chad has Steelers winter coats, shirts, and such. He was a Steelers fan before he knew what football was from people coming up to him and commenting on it. We are planning on watching the Superbowl with those friends this Sunday, so I'm sure there will be a lot of black and gold flying around.
Funny thing is, Chad mostly likes them because he thinks they are a bunch of criminals or something ("stealers"). You should have seen his face light up when I told him the Pittsburgh baseball team was the Pirates. "REAL pirates?!" Poor boy will have to learn the hard way how pathetic that team is ;).
