Ha, I love it, Auh2o..."maybe, just maybe, the sky is not falling". I am feeling better, thanks for asking. I went back to bed for a bit and am doing ok.
Well, my old klunker Suburban is in the shop again...probably the fuel pump and something going on with the brakes. It died 10 times while I was driving home from my sister's yesterday. I had to pull of the highway and restart it, but at least it got me home. Bruce is talking about shopping for a new one today (well, new-used). It is probably a good time to get a good deal because car dealerships are going out of business here. Only the strongest seem to be surviving.
Better finish the coffee and get moving.

Hey AFD, good to see you posting again. You've been missed.
Thanks for your prayers friends. They have been felt, and have been effective. Without going into to much detail, there has been some Doctor and ins-urance problems here, that I think finally yesterday was resolved. I hope anyway. And I know it has been through your kind prayers in our behalf. Thank you so much kind friends.
Welcome to Sally. I hope you stick around and find a rocker that fits. This is a nice place to sit and relax.
Auh2o, I hear you guy's are gonna get another blast of winter this weekend. Hope it's not to bad. It's been pretty good here this winter. About average snowfall, although it has been a bad bad year for avalanches. We have had 4 deaths already with skiers and snowmobilers triggering avalnches. One of the was a skier in a "safe zone". That has not happened in 30 years. Very sad.
Well MDC, How will your Cards fare this weekend at Carolina? I'd like to see them do it, but I think it ends this week for them.
I was just reading that Jack Kemp has cancer. Sure hope he can overcome that. Rotten miserable stuff!
Well I'm buying breakfast at the Diner if anyone's interested. Shoes are optional.

Hey Folks
We're just kicking back watching movies and playing games this weekend, another reason to like the snow, it makes for a great excuse to take it easy.
Asa-Boy, that's something about those avalanches. We have nothing like that around here, can't imagine it. Our hills would be like specs out your way. I saw that about Jack Kemp the other day. He's always been one of my favorites. I've written his name in twice for President. I wish the GOP had listened to his warnings about the Party's direction. Certainly continued prayers for him
possum-I think you're right about Chesley, name and need of new vocabulary. One of the news casters up here was teasing him about that very thing. She said something like, "what's the fun of saying hazy, hot, and humid everyday." He was originally from Philly and never really got accustomed to the weather here.Chesley would do his outside weather reports dressed like the little brother from "A Christmas Story."
Sally-Yes, please stick around. Asa is right, the Porch is a relaxing place to be. Thanks Floyd!
Boo-Glad to hear you're back at 'em.

Yeah, that's a big Ten-Four there Pig Pen
Yeah, we definitely got the front door, good buddy.
Mercy sakes alive, looks like we've got us a convoy.
It was the dark of the moon
On the sixth of June
in a Kenworth pullin' logs'
Cab-over 'Pete' with a refer on
And a Jimmy haulin' hogs.
We was headin' for bear
On I-1-0
'Bout a mile out Shakey Town'
I says, Pig Pen this here's the Duck
And I'm 'bout to put the hammer down.
we got a little 'ole convoy
Rockin' through the night
Yeah, we got a little 'ole convoy
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
C'mon and join our Convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way
We gonna roll this convoy

Convoy
Yeah, breaker Pig Pen this here's the Duck
And uh, you wanna back off them hogs a bit.
Uh, ten-four 'bout five mile or so
Ten-Roger them hogs is gettin' in-tense up here
By the time we got into Tulsa Town
We had eighty-five trucks in all
But there's a road block on the clover leaf
And them bears was wall to wall
Yeah, them smokies as thick as bugs on a bumper
They even had a bear in the air
I says, callin' all trucks
This here's the Duck
We about to go a huntin' bear
'Cause we got a great big convoy
Rockin' through the night
Yeah, we got a great big convoy
Ain't she a beautiful sight.
C'mon and join our Convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way

Convoy
Uh, you wanna give me a ten-nine on that Pig Pen
Uh, negatory, you're still too close.
Yeah, them hogs is startin' to close up my sinuses
Mercy sakes, you'd better back off another ten
Well, we rolled up Interstate fourty-four
Like a rocket sled on rails
We tore up all of our swindel sheets
And left em settin' on the scales
By the time we hit that Shy Town
Them bears was a gettin' smart
They'd brought up some reinforcements
From the Illinois national guard!
There's armored cars and tanks and jeeps
And rigs of every size
Yeah, them chicken coops was full of bears
And choppers filled the skies
Well, we shot the line
We went for broke
With a thousand screamin' trucks
And eleven long haired Friends of Jesus
In a Chartreuse microbus.
Yeah, Rubber Duck it's Sod Buster
C'mon there
Yeah, Ten-Four Sod Buster
Listen, you wanna put that microbus
In behind that suicide jockey.
Yeah, he's haulin' dynamite
And he needs all the help he can get.
Well, we laid a strip for the Jersey Shore
Prepared to cross the line
I could see the bridge was lined with bears
But I didn't have a doggone dime
I says, Pig Pen this here's the Duck
We just ain't a gonna pay no toll
So we crashed the gate doin' 98
I says let them truckers roll
Ten-Four
'Cause we got a mighty convoy
Rockin' through the night
Yeah, we got a mighty convoy
Ain't she a beautiful sight
C'mon and join our Convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way
We gonna roll this convoy
'Cross the USA

Ah, Ten-Four
Pig Pen what's you're Twenty?
Omaha?
Well, they oughtta know what to do
With them hogs out there, fer sure
Well, mercy sakes good buddy
We gonna back on outta here
So keep the bugs off yer glass
And the bears off yer...tail
We'll catch ya on the flip flop
This here's the Rubber Duck on the side.

Asa, I'm glad things have improved a little. Sometimes, you just have to rise up and roar a little. That's hard for a peace-lovin' man to do, but sometimes it's necessary, and it usually pays off.
Well, I'm about to go pick up a friend and head over to East Buffet to have our fill of crab legs, on their all-you-want night. $9 for all the crab legs I can eat? Mercy!

Reading those Convoy lyrics takes me down memory lane, MDC. My dad was a big fan of country music back in the 70's - especially trucker songs. He wasn't a trucker, just a heavy equipment mechanic (aka grease monkey), but he did use a CB. "Dipstick" was his handle. Does anybody remember the "Teddy Bear" song by Red Sovine. Now there's a good trucker song that'll clutch ya.
Car problems stink, Boo. Hope you find something that works for ya. It's probably a halfway decent time to buy a SUV since people sold them off back when gas went sky high.
Well, best go check on my girls. They're watching a Disney Movie in the other room.

Possum, I'm so sorry you're having to face such a problem. And some people wonder why I won't take a drink! Let's just say it's because I've never seen a situation in my whole life that was made better because alcohol was a part of it, but I've sure seen a bunch of things that were made worse. It just plain ain't worth it! I'll be praying for you, friend, and you know my email addy. Feel free.
Boo, sounds like you've hit "the point of diminishing returns" with the car - where the expense and the aggravation just aren't outweighed by having no car payment any longer. I'd say - dump it while it's running.
Well, Toye Starr is patting my ankle with a cold little paw, so I guess she wants a warm lap to snuggle in. I suppose I'd better oblige her, after running off and leaving her earlier. Poor little old thing! Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

It's just wonderful to be able to spend some porch time with you, ASA, and I am so glad the Lord is answering prayers. I think of you and the Mrs. often and talk to the Lord about you. He loves you so. (Thanks for the tip about Leshin Motors...hehe).
Right, Romeena, the car is running now so we can trade it in. We went test-driving cars today to get a good idea of what we want. I have a dear friend who owns a local car dealership (she and her husband) and I would like to do business with them. We want a used car so they are offering to go to auction for us and find us what we want. We drove alot of vans over the past several months and the only one I was really comfortable with was the Chrystler Town&Country, so if we go with a van, it will probably be that one. I like the Toyota vans but felt cramped in them. I think we might end up getting another Suburban, but a used with low mileage. We are big people and are just much more comfortable in a Suburban and with all the kids and people we carry around these days, we need space. Would like better gas mileage but want space, too. We'll see. I would really like to stay in the 18,000 price range, if possible and I have seen some 2006 Suburbans with 40,000 miles for even less.
You know, AFD, I thought there would be an abundance of SUVs out there at great prices, but there just isn't around here. When gas prices came down, people bought them up and we had a hard time even finding one on any of the lots in Corpus. Many car lots we saw were out of business.
Guess what, Auh2o?...our weatherman is predicting possible snow flurries here on Thursday and Friday. I will be traveling north on Friday for our annual women's retreat and I wonder if we might see some snow up there. Sure would be wonderful.
Prayers for your situation, Possum. Lord keep you strong and wise. We love you.

My dad works as a mechanic at a Ford dealership in a town of about 2500, and they've been feeling some of the squeeze, although not quite as much as the local Chevy dealership (both are owned by the same two men - guess they want a corner on the market).

Good morning Mayberry. Hope you all have a blessed day today. It's cold here in South Texas (just the way I like it). MIL went to spend the week with her other son and that will be nice. It's going to be a busy week. Sean has his appointment today with the endocrine doc (would appreciate prayers). They are now going to start him on the cholesterol medicine and I will get the lecture about his weight, etc...I just hate hearing it because food is one of those constant battles with Sean.
I have women's retreat this weekend, so lots to do to get things at order here at home, laundry and packing so I may be on the porch less this week.
Please continue to remember Zach in your prayers. I am very concerned about him and he called me last night and is in so much pain and very depressed. He keeps saying he can't take it anymore and he won't talk to his dad about it, so I am going to have to do something today. I hate talking to his dad, too, but I think Zach may turn to drugs or do something worse if things continue (I know he has suicidal thoughts). He saw a counselor and is scheduled to go again this week, but it's not enough and his dad still isn't realizing the seriousness of things. I am thinking about calling the counselor he is seeing and telling her that Zach is this desperate, I just don't know if she will talk about it with me. Zach is begging me not to talk to his dad about it. I know I have to do something, today. I know your prayers of faith can move mountains. Please pray for us in this situation.
Thanks so much,

Has anyone else here discovered "Google Maps-Street View"? It doesn't cover all towns, but it has many.
Someone evidently has driven these neighborhoods with some type of camera that gives a 360 degree view. You can travel the roads as if you're in a car. My house is in it. Very cool.

Well, that's just pretty spooky. I just checked out the Google street view thing, and there's my house, big as life! The picture is a couple of years old, judging by the presence of a butterfly bush that's no longer there, but it's my house, for sure. Actually, it doesn't show anything that anyone driving down the street wouldn't see, but it's still a little scary.
You know, we all tend to get defensive about things that don't matter. I have a friend whose checking account was messed with a few weeks ago - somebody managed to clean about $3000 out of it, which the bank will make good, but still it scared her. Her question was - how on earth did anyone get my checking account number? I asked her if she had ever written a check at the grocery store, or paid a workman, or paid with a check at some dollar store or anywhere else. Well, of course she had. She looked at me like I had three heads when I suggested that she had given her checking account number to every one of those people. Finally, she said, "Oh, I guess that's right." There is no security. We just have to do the best we can.
Well, on that happy note, I'm going to hunt up something to eat. Was supposed to work, the hoped-for call came, and I'm staying home tonight. Starr is delighted. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

I did that Google thing once; I didn't like it much. Whoever drove down my street and took pictures of my neighborhood happened to pick trash day for us. Our garage door is open (revealing a bunch of junk); my husbands broken down truck was parked at the curb, and yes, the trash can was right in the middle of the view. Our house looks like a real slum-dwelling on that thing. Too bad they can't give a person some notice. I would have had Newton Monroe come over and maybe paint the place. Or at least made sure my garage door was down and the trash can wasn't on the sidewalk.

Hazel, you are so funny. I wish you hung around on the porch everyday.
Glad you got the night off, Ro. Hope you slept well. Is it cold there? Yesterday was beautiful here....cool, dry and sunny.
Sean's appointment went well yesterday. He sees a very good nurse practitioner in the endocrine clinic. That girl knows her stuff and is very good at explaining things and answering questions. She showed all the past 3 lab results of his cholesterol and they have gotten worse. His LDL was up to 229, which is horrible. She told me it was hereditary and that they are seeing alot of this in kids. Seems alot of kids have high cholesterol and never know it until they are adults and some damage has already been done to their arteries. Seems like I am often hearing of men having heart attacks in their 40's these days. I guess it's a combination of things, including stress. They didn't go on and on about his weight this time, in fact, the nurse prac. said, "As adults, most of us even have a very hard time controlling our appetite. How can we look at a 13 year old and expect them to just be able to do it?". Sean has a normal appetite for a 13 year old and even eats less than some of his friends, but he just doesn't burn the fat as well as they do. She explained how the high cholesterol causes a raise in insulin levels, which makes the body store fat (or something like that). I know I have had high cholestrol and high insulin levels as long as I can remember so the poor kid must have inherited it from me. I think I am going to try and invest in some kind of eliptical machine for him to exercise on.
Sorry to talk your ears off this morning. Did any of you watch the TAGS marathon on TVLand last night? The kids and I watched alot of it. I was not happy with some of the commercials that were on at the time. I wish TVLand would keep it family-friendly. I can't stand that the High School reunion program is coming back on again. I am so sick of the commercial they keep showing of last season, where you see the topless blond jumping into the pool, then you see her in bed with some guy. Why would they show that kind of stuff on a channel like TVLand. Discouraging. Guess I should just look at my DVDs of TAGS with the kids.
Keep your eyes open, Possum!

I sure hope you can get Sean's weight under control Boo. I remember as a young-un eating like a horse. But I couldn't gain weight for nothing. Today I can see a picture of food and put on 3 pounds. Heck, I had to loosen my belt a notch just reading Possum's breakfast. The sad thing is she later said she was kidding about it, but I was still 2 pounds heavier just reading about it. :)

January 13, 2009 - Msg 69298:
Yep, ASA, I think I would rather have hot buns than hot knees, come to think of it. Of course, it doesn't get cold here much, but it's nice for traveling. Last year I took a four hour trip with a friend who had heated seats and when I got out to walk around, I didn't have the usual stiff feeling I have when I've been sitting in a car for hours. I think it would be a really good thing for Bruce with his back problems, too.
Yes, I hope Sean is able to lose weight. He is still really short for his age and that makes it even worse. He seems to be slow moving into puberty and that probably has something to do with one of the meds he takes. One of the problems we have had is that the med for Tourette's made him have some breast development and he hates it, of course. The only thing we could possibly do for that is to give him a hormone that would make him grow hair like crazy (even on his forehead) and has many bad side effects, so that is out of the question. Seems like the poor kid has alot to deal with but when I look at Zach and Jubi, I realize it could be so much worse. Which reminds me I wanted to give a prayer update on Jubi. She has been confined to home because her counts are so low. She is having a tough time of it. They have really been blasting her with the chemo and radiation. She does have a new puppy, though, which really helps. It's a little pomeranian pup that is blind in one eye, so the owner couldn't find a home for her...until now! According to Jubi's mom, Jubi is taking very good care of her. Thanks for your prayers for her. The older I get, the more I see that prayers are the life raft we need to get us through!
Here is one of life's mysteries...why is it that we never get tired of watching TAGS? I love it every time.
Boo

I was searching this Mayberry website for info on Frank Myers and found this other interesting stuff. (see below) But i do recall hearing or reading that Frank Myers was a production assistant on the show, and that they used his name for Myers Lake and for the character of Frank Myers who had the confederate bond.
These are from the FAQ page:
Where did the writers come up with the names used on TAGS?
An unusual piece of trivia was supplied by Paul Gerefi of Fort Lauderdale, FL. He observed that within a 30 mile radius of Andy's birthplace in Mt. Airy, NC, are the following towns: Lawsonville, Walkertown, Crumpler and Taylorsville. The names of such characters as Floyd Lawson, Ellie Walker, Helen Crump and Andy Taylor naturally come to mind.
Who was the announcer at the beginning of the show who said, "The Andy Griffith Show...staring, Andy Griffith....with Ronny Howard. Also starring, Don Knotts.
This answer avoided us for years but thanks to TAGS fan Dennis Hasty we now have an answer. The name of the announcer is Colin Male. He was a former radio announcer in Cincinnati who moved to Hollywood to be part of the motion picture business. (NO, he didn't know Gabby Hayes.)Colin appeared in the TAGS episode where Andy and Helen are caught fishing without a licenses by the game warden (#140 "Andy and Helen Have Their Day") . Colin was the game warden.
Do you know in what episode a dart board was hanging from the bulletin board? It was only shown once.
That's in episode #70, "Lawman Barney." Opie beats Andy in a game of darts, and then asks his pa if he'd like to play for money. Andy says that would ruin Opie's amateur standing, which prompts Opie to ask what an "amateur" is. Andy explains that an amateur plays for fun, while a professional plays because he wants to get paid. Opie decides he wants to be a professional amateur.
The TAGS crew kept a dart board backstage. In between takes Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, and Hal Smith used to like to play darts. Hal Smith always wanted Andy and Don to play for "big stakes," but they would never play for more than a dime. Apparently, at some point Ronny Howard started playing too, which probably inspired the writers to write in the aforementioned scene. The entire scene is often cut to make more room for commercials, so many folks may not have ever seen it.
I was wondering if you know the name of the painting that hangs over the Taylor fireplace in many of the episodes of TAGS?
It's called "The Angelus, 1859" of folks praying in their field, by French artist Jean Francois Millet (1811-1875). A similar work by Millet is called "The Gleaners". Prints of these paintings were not uncommon in American house-holds during the first half of this century.
Can you get a blue and gold sleeve patch like the one's Andy & Barney had on their uniforms anywhere?
You can purchase those at Weaver's Department Store. Look in the "Cool Gifts" section.
Who was the first female to wear pants on TAGS?
I'm fairly certain Peggy was the first female resident of Mayberry to wear pants in public, (the SECOND time she was to go fishing at the end of the episode.) Later on, after Mayberry turned to color, Goober's girl Flora wore slacks when she filled in at the filling station, and Helen appeared in some snug-fitting "dancing" pants in "The Senior Play" (or perhaps those were leggings? Anyway, it definitely wa'n't a dress.)
Watching quiet Sam plant his fields at night, did I hear Barney make a suggestion that maybe Sam's planting a little "happy weed," or marijuana. Did I hear right?
You sure did. Most of the time that scene is cut from episodes aired on TV today. Now that we're on the subject, most folks know that the original epilogues to the 249 episodes are almost never shown on TV these days.
What many fans DON'T know is that there are LOTS of other scenes missing too, not just the epilogues. Many episodes also have opening scenes which have also been cut out, and just about every episode has a couple of scenes missing from somewhere in the middle. Some episode have as many as TEN cuts! Each episode originally ran 24 minutes and 30 seconds in length, not including credits or commercials. Nowadays, the versions shown by most stations run about 21 minutes each. Add those lost minutes up, and it's the equivalent of more than ONE ENTIRE SEASON of The Andy Griffith Show! Terrible, ain't it?
Well, honeys and dears, there ya have it.
There are more interesting Q and As on the Mayberry FAQ page.
Prayers continue for all.

MDC: I thought you typed all that until I got to the bottom and saw the "[Back to top]", then realized a little plagiarism had been committed. Just kidding. Thanks for the info, though.
I did notice the other day on the tagswc.com's "map" of Mayberry that they had "Dequeen Junction" in NC, when if you watch the episode where that is mentioned, they were actually in Arkansas headed to Shreveport. Everett Greenbaum's in-laws are from Dequeen, AR, which is about 2 hours south of me. Dequeen, AR is MY real life connection to Mayberry, so I'm just a little defensive about that one, if you don't mind!
By the way in the episode where Barney buys a new car there is a scene where Ange and Barn are on the porch waiting for Mrs. Lesh talking about what a major purchase this was for Barney. Then Barney alludes to him buying his mom and dad a septic tank for their anniversary. Well, that was actually a real life event for Writer Everett Greenbaum. He bought Mother and Father in-law's a septic tank, and had their house remodeled with "in door" plumbing down in Dequeen.
That was a good idea. Think I'll do that for my in-laws one of these days too.
