November 18, 2008 - Msg 68056: Right, I wish they would bring back some of the really good, old black and white shows like Ozzie and Harriet, The Donna Reed Show, Life of Riley, Dennis the Menace, The Rifleman, and boy, would I like to see The Courtship of Eddie's Father in syndication on some channel. There are so many to choose from, I wonder why they keep showing the same stuff over and over...sorry folks, but I am sick and tired of Beverly Hillbillies and I Love Lucy.

Speaking of teen shows, Salty, did you ever see "My Super Sweet 16"..I think it comes on MTV?? Not sure, but it is really sickening to see how some wealthy folks are raising their over-indulged, disrespectful, spoiled-rotten, self-centered daughters! Horrors!

I was thinking about how many parents work and leave their teens home alone unsupervised for hours. What are they watching on TV or the internet? I heard someone say (I think it was here on the porch), that they thought it was as important to supervise young teens as very young children during those after-school hours. I read an article once about how many teen girls become pregnant during those hours after school and before parents get home. Scary!

November 18, 2008 - Msg 68062: Thanks, MDC, glad you enjoyed the photos. It was a difficult venue for getting decent pictures - the lighting wasn't good in most places. Also, I was getting used to a new camera. Never mind that I'm also a terrible photographer.

By the way, this is probably totally unnecessary, but just in case someone hasn't discovered this fact - the pictures in the album are clickable, which will enlarge them to good viewing size. Those little thumbnails don't show you much.

Well, guess I'll go try to catch a little nap, as I have to work tonight. Poor Starr, she will not be a happy puppy when I start putting that uniform on. She recognizes it, and will grab hold of my pantlegs and try to keep me from putting them on. She will also run off with my socks! Poor baby.

November 18, 2008 - Msg 68066: Hey to the porch! I spent the entire morning in the courthouse waiting for my name to be called for a 10:30 docket, which they didn't even start until 11:00. Another wasted day around here, I swear if I'm going to waste a day, I'd rather do it they way I want to! I had a credit card I paid off back in May '07 & the jerks with that company kept telling me I hadn't paid it, never mind I faxed them the copies (3 times even) of the receipt, showing that they cashed to check that was sent to them, AND that I had filed a complaint with the dispute department, which also needed the info faxed to them, they still insisted I owed them $1300 or so. Well, after much arguing on the phone with people I couldn't even understand, much less know they understood me, I finally told them to do what they had to do when they threatened me with an attorney. So here we are 1.5 years later & they are filing a complaint. So off to court I go with my receipts & information in hand & what does the judge do? Set a date for trial because I am contesting it! So now, another day will be lost in Jan over a bill that I paid in full back in May '07! What a pain in the pa-tootie!
There were quite a few other people there because they owed someone money (that's all they were calling up to the judge) & I was so surprised at the way these folks were dressed & how they behaved. Most of them had dirty old blue jeans on, a couple of women had nasty old sweatpants & sweat shirts on. There were only 2 or 3 that said "Yes, Sir" or "No, Sir" when the judge questioned them, most of them would say "Yeah" or grunt "huh" if they didn't understand him. I was taught you are supposed to respect the court & the judge, with your dress & your words, & your demeanor, guess that doesn't matter anymore. I was appalled. One woman even went up there with her hair in curlers & a handkerchief wrapped around them!
Anyway, I'm home now, getting ready to make a big ol' pot of Spaghetti, so ya'll get yer plates or bowls & head on over, most of our eatin' ware is packed up so you'll have to bring your own. hm will you bring the meatballs? Ro we'll send some to the hospital for you & we'll brown truck some to Rev.

MAVIS: If you were in District Court, it was probably a "civil" day. Usually, cases are broken down into civil, criminal, and traffic sections and scheduled accordingly. Rent court is sometimes separated out, too. That's probably why it seemed like so many people owing money; it was all civil lawsuits.

Good morning, everyone. It is in the 40's here this morning, with a bit of fog. How is the weather where you are?

I'm thinking it might be time to start the Thanksgiving memories since Thanksgiving is a week away. Who wants to start?

Took the kids to the movies last night (free popcorn night) and we saw Matagascar 2 and I have to say it was much better than the first one. Pretty funny, actually...clever stuff. It kept Sean and me more entertained than it did Erin, I think. Some of the humor was probably over little one's heads, but not ugly stuff. Good, clean fun, as I recall. The voice of one of the main characters was done by the late Bernie Mac, which was sad. I'm telling you, though, there was this "bad guy" lion who was done by Alec Baldwin and it was perfect! That cartoon even looked and acted like him...funny.

Well, better finish the coffee and get the kids going in the right direction. Since the recent time change, I have to crawl out of bed and it seems to take me 30 minutes to get my eyes open.

As for Floyd looking like the real Floyd, you are so right, the resemblance is remarkable, but only when he's in character. Yep, when he takes off that jacket and tie, and is just being himself, you would never, ever, look at him and think he looks like the real Floyd. It's not all in the clothes, though, because he can just switch to being Floyd in the middle of a conversation. It's startling! Opie does look like Opie, all the time. You could see him on the street and think "That kid looks like Opie!" He's a very pleasant and nice young feller, too.

The whole cruise is loads of fun. If you're interested, call Sharon at 1-800-832-7993 and ask for the particulars regarding next year's event. They're taking reservations and deposits now, in order to secure the rooms. I believe the schedule for next year includes Nassau and Key West - not positive, but I think that's right. The price is right, and you'll have a great time.

She did the cooking and it was a very cold day. We had a fire going and after dinner, we watched "A Christmas Story" (it was the first time I had ever seen it and loved it!). I remember that Bruce and I were both curled up together in the recliner together (we were both MUCH smaller in those days)!

I got some of the particulars about next year's cruise to Mayberry. The ports of call will be Nassau and Key West. The cost is about $525 for a double-occupancy waterside stateroom. I think, though am not positive, that interior (no porthole) rooms are a tad less. That $525 covers your room, meals, and gratuities while aboard the ship. Anything purchased in the shipboard shops or in the ports of call are on you. As cruises go, it's quite reasonable.

Sharon is accepting a $50 deposit now, and you can pay a little along the way, so with nearly a year to get it done, it's practically painless.

Those who live along the East coast, in driving distance of Jacksonville, have an advantage. For those in Texas, the midwest and the West coast, flying is probably the preferred option, and that of course adds to the cost. If you don't mind a long road trip, that could be fun, I guess.

I think it would be terrific if we could get a good group from the porch to go. I'll bet we could arrange to be seated together in the dining room, too. It just sounds like a lot of fun to me. You all please think about it.

November 19, 2008 - Msg 68087: Well, I want to ask prayer for my church family, please. One of our youth killed himself today. We are a fairly small church and the youth members and youth workers are close. We will be meeting with the kids tonight and we could use your prayers. This particular boy, I may have mentioned before. His name was Aaron and he was a junior this year. About 2 years ago he came to church with a friend, and when the invitation to receive Christ was given, there he came. He was baptized soon after and got involved with the youth group. He was the kind of kid who was very lovable and all of us youth workers loved him. He was always ready with a hug and "Hey Miss Julie". Just one of those kids everybody liked. I know he had a turbulent past and his mom was not very supportive...she did come to his baptism but we never saw her after that. Aaron actually lived with another family in our church for awhile. He had been absent from church for a few months and one of the youth workers visited him and got no clue that anything was very wrong. I just got off the phone with her and she is having a terrible time, feeling like there may have been something more she could do. She is a very loving woman who reached out to Aaron more than anyone and he knew she was there (or any of us, for that matter). For some reason, he didn't reach out. I guess he just couldn't deal with life anymore. Such a sweet boy, and so many opportunities, and life left unlived. God help all involved. Thank you.

Well, when I got to church last night, there were lots of crying teenagers in the parking lot...some I knew, most I didn't (friends of Aaron). We all crowded into the youth room (35 of us) and we just tried to comfort the kids, let them talk and cry. It was pretty tough, because those poor kids were hurting so much. And all of them said the same thing, even his closest friend, "they had no clue that he was going to do it". He was the kids with the contiual smile on his face who always tried to make everyone else feel better. The poor kids were feeling so much guilt, like maybe they could have done something. I guess we all were. The boy had been absent from church for awhile and we let him slip through the cracks in our business. Thank you for your prayers.

Boo, I will be praying for the young people in your church. Losing a young person is devastating especially to teenagers who feel that they are not supposed to die young. I pray that God will comfort all involved.

November 20, 2008 - Msg 68103: Boo, be prepared for some delayed reactions from some of those young folks. It's hard enough for us as adults to accept the finality of death. It took me about three years to get past hearing my husband's truck come into the garage, or the sound of his briefcase hitting his desk. There's just something in our hearts and brains that refuses to give up. That's even more true in the very young. They usually have no prior experience with death, and most things on TV or the movies has a happy ending, and their parents usually manage to bail them out of difficulties, so accepting that a friend really is gone and is not coming back is hard for them. Counseling right now is important, but it might be helpful again in a few months.

You didn't mention the means he chose to end his life, and you may have your reasons. I'm not asking. I would ask, though, whether it's possible that he might have been just experimenting, showing off, or trying to scare someone. In other words, did he really mean to end his life? That can be important for the kids to know. To do it intentionally is difficult to accept, but if the kids could see that he really didn't mean it, it could do two things. It could relieve some who may be feeling guilty for not picking up on clues and doing something about it. It could also be a potent warning to others who might be contemplating some melodramatic act of their own.

I recall a teenage patient from years ago who swallowed a whole bottle of Tylenol and then called her mother and told her what she had done. Her mom got her to the ED, and treatment began. For two days, we served that poor little girl a concoction every two hours, made up of Sprite and a generous dose of Mucomyst, which smells and tastes like rotten eggs. It would gag a buzzard. The girl admitted she never really thought the Tylenol would hurt her, she just wanted to scare her mother, who was insisting she break up with a sorry, scrofulous little boyfriend. Well, she scared her mom alright, and she also damaged her liver, which will be a problem for the rest of her life. Poor little airhead, and the worst part is, the boyfriend never even came to see her! Kids don't think like adults, and of course, some adults don't think like adults, either.

Well, I was up at six this morning, to attend a staff meeting at work, and now I'm thinking a nap would be nice. See you good folks later. --Romeena

November 20, 2008 - Msg 68113: Thank you for that advice, Ro (and for all of your prayers, everyone). All we have heard is that Aaron died alone in his home from a single gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy is pending. The authorities seem confindent that it was self-inflicted, but time will tell. I agree, it would be so much easier for the kids to deal if his death had been by some other means. There are so many unanswered questions. As I may have already mentioned, he had a trouble family life, though it wasn't obvious. He was a private person and only shared that with his closest friends. His friends had seen him that morning in school and he seemed fine, then I guess he went home for lunch and killed himself.

November 21, 2008 - Msg 68118: Hey KY Kid. Great to meet you! I have a 13 year old son named Sean and a little girl named Erin, who is 7. They keep me VERY busy.

It is really chilly here this morning, and that is a good thing. It is probably in the 40's, which might seem like springtime to some of you in the North. To me, it's perfect.

I want to thank all of you again for your prayers. It is a tough time for my church family, but we will get through it. My pastor, Mark, has got the difficult job of trying to help the families involved, bless his heart. He will be a comfort to them. I will never forget all he did for me when Karen died. He is one of those genuine people. He loves folks but doesn't "act" religious, you know what I mean. He's just one of us, like a real brother and is ready to roll up his sleeves and help where he can. Anyway, I am feeling better today than yesterday, and I went out back last night and had a real good cry. I had been holding in alot of hurt lately and needed to get it out. I miss Karen so much and it still hurts to think about her, and I have been concerned about my friend Paul, and my parents. We did make the decision to move my parents out of their home to keep them safer and they are coming to terms with it. It is a painful thing to do, though, because it is hard for them. With the recent falls and such, and dad's confused state, it has to be. They will be moving in with St. Susan soon and Susan's son, Matt (Emily's dad) and his family will be moving in to the folks house to fix it up. It helps to know that family will continue to live in the house and I will be happy to have Matt and his family living near me. Anyway, seems like life just gets harder as the years go by. I have alot to rejoice in, though. If you think about it, just knowing that I belong to the Lord and that he is taking care of me is enough to rejoice about, no matter what happens in this life....which reminds me....where are those Thanksgiving memories, ya'll (do any of you think of Paula Deen when you hear me say "ya'll"?).

Erin has her thanksgiving lunch at school today and I am supposed to eat with her, so I need to go fix the corn I was appointed to make and get Erin up for school. Blessings,

November 21, 2008 - Msg 68119: Well, I guess I will get you started...I could tell my story again about my friend Deenie and how she re-hydrated her thanksgiving turkey. Do ya'll remember that one? Deenie was a nurse friend of mine, and one thanksgiving, when she was young, she and her sister were responsible for making the turkey for the relatives. It was the first time, and they decided to slow-cook it overnight. They were so worried about doing right that they decided to stay awake and watch over it. Well, of course the fell asleep sometime in the middle of the night and overslept. When they checked the bird, it looked dehydrated from being in the oven so long! The relatives would be coming soon and they were in a panic. Deenie happened to have some hospital supplies on hand and she had the idea that she would re-hydrate the bird with some D5W IV solution. She hooked up the tubing and stuck the IV in the bird and filled it with the IV solution and put it back in the oven to warm up. Well, it worked and everyone at the table went on and on about how moist the turkey was! They didn't even know what had happened.

Mavis,I'm with you on that stinking perfume-I know that Vanilla junk-it reeks! I took my mom to the doctor a month or so ago,sat down next to a lady,and immediately got a whiff of her strong stinky perfume and just jumped up and moved! I did tell her that I had allergies and her perfume would bother me. People need to get a clue! I usually wear lavender-it's light and so far hasn't repulsed anyone! But stuff like Shalimar and there's one by Avon called "Far Away" or something like that-too strong,too stinky!
Well,gonna get caught up on a few things around the rock,so I'd better go for now. Y'all have a good day!
P.S. I'd watch out eating Spot's "freen" beans- remember he eats with Martians sometimes- sounds like some type of Martian cooking to me!

Hey Possum, the perfume that really bothers me is that Este' Lauder "Youth Dew". Do you know that one? Very heavy scent, usually worn by elderly ladies who shop at high-end department stores...(no offense to anyone who wears Youth Dew).

Lots to do today...got my thanksgiving shopping done and am making some soup. Need to get ready for Erin's school thanksgiving lunch, too. We got news today that Aaron's visitation is at 4pm, and funeral tomorrow at 11am. Better go...

November 21, 2008 - Msg 68123: Yep,boo,that "Youth Dew" is a stinker too! I remember a few years ago Mr.Possum gave me Elizabeth Taylor's "White Diamonds". Well, I could not wear that stuff- I told him thanks,but it was too strong and made me smell like a little old rich white lady in church! If you've ever sat next to one with that strong perfume on,you'll know exactly what I meant! I was talking with some girlfriends of mine about perfume a few years back when I was still working and they thought that was the funniest thing. They are black and said they loved "White Diamonds"-give it to them because they didn't mind smelling like rich old white church ladies!
I've got a funeral tomorrow too. A dear older black lady friend of our family passed after a short battle with cancer. Sure will miss Karen (pronounced Ka-REEN). She was a character!

I don't really have any stories other than how,
as a kid,I remember that great aroma coming from the kitchen on Thanksgiving morning.
I do recall that my mom used to put a piece of cotton "t-shirt" on top of the bird as it cooked,
and would do the basting right over the bird's little T. Funny the things remembered.
Also, how she would use her good silverware that day and Christmas. I now have it, still in the nice lined box. I think it's calld Rogers 1881 International silverware. Not made in 1881, that's just part of the name. Great for eating "freen beans!" ha
Boo, my prayers continue for you and the whole situation, and that of your folks to. Thank God for St Susan, eh?

November 21, 2008 - Msg 68125: First of all Boo - I am so sorry for the loss in your youth group. Prayers for you and the other youth leaders.

They are FINALLY working on the foundation today - this contractor (like many) has too many irons in the fire or too many jobs to keep track of. The house might get set next week so we should be in it for our Christmas morning. Jesse was hoping for his birthday which is Dec 5 but it looks doubtful.

I am sorry for the sporadic behavior.

November 21, 2008 - Msg 68130: Howdy, all. Cool here in north Texas, too. 49 degrees, was 39 this morning. Sure is pretty out there, though.

All my (un)lighted deer are in the back yard, just not set up and lighted yet. Ted put them back there for me, now all I have to do is set them up and arrange them, and get power to them. That's easy, as over the years Ted has installed power outlets all over the place, so I have to use very few extension cords. Sure makes it simpler! I just hope all their lights work, and don't give me a hard time.

Went to lunch and then moused around a bit with Eloise today. I love a day like this, with nothing that really has to be done.

Prayers for my grandson, please. He's fifteen, and a few weeks ago he demolished the ACL and tore the meniscus in his knee, playing football. I think I told you about it when it happened. Anyway, on Monday at 1 pm he's having surgery to repair all of that stuff. His mom, my daughter, is really on edge about it, worried more ab out the anesthesia than anything else, I think, so please pray for peace of mind for her, too.

Well, guess I'll go play with little Starr. She is poking at me, trying to get my attention, the spoiled little thing. Be blessed, everyone! --Romeena

November 21, 2008 - Msg 68139: Well, KY Kid, I just had my shower and am settling in for the night. It's been a long day! I actually went to the grocery store twice...(yuck). I just had a little leftover rice pudding. Do you like rice pudding? It's real "comfort food", as they call it.

Well, the visitation for Aaron was not as hard as I thought it would be. I felt terribly sorry for the family, but there was a very big turn out of kids from the high school and Aaron's mom got lots of hugs. They had slide showing of pictures of Aaron when he was a baby and a little boy and he was the cutest little boy. It was pretty heart-wrenching. So hard to get you mind around something so beautiful and sweet being gone. I did hear that (not positive if it is true) that Aaron had an argument with his dad and dad told him he was "no good, would never amount to anything". I hope for the dad's sake that it isn't true. I also found out that he had a recent break-up with a girlfriend. So, we will get through the funeral tomorrow and then help the kids in the group deal with their grief. I forgot to mention that Karen's boy, Zach was a pretty good friend of Aaron and took it really badly. I'm sure it brought up alot of terrible memories of his mom's death. Please remember Zach with a prayer.

Think I will think about heading off to bed. I am pretty tired.
