Howdy, SPOT. I think what Chuck said about the Waffle House being the "Awful House" is hilarious. We don't have them here in my area, but I ate at one when I was in Florida once and it was kinda "awful". Of course, it didn't make me sick like IHOP.
Been a busy day. I got Sean's christmas present today (a guitar). It is the right size for him with his stubby little fingers but has a remarkably good sound for a smaller guitar. It was 100.00, but the guy who helped me was the owner's son and gave it to me for 80.00. It's a nice little guitar. So, I am doing pretty well on the chrismas shopping. I will get Sean one more present, but something less expensive.

Good Heavens! It's 38 degrees outside! Guess I'll change my plans on what to wear to church this morning. My friend Ted is coming in the morning to fix some landscape lights that aren't working and do a couple of little fix-its in the house - guess I'll get thim to help me move my plumeria tres into the garage. They won't put up with this cold weather. I can move one myself, but the other one is in a pot bigger than a washtub, and is about nine feet tall. No way can I handle that thing. It's going to have to rest at a slant in the garage, it's too tall to stand upright. I may have to consider pruning it back, but I really hate to do it, it has such a nice shape as it is.
Well, I'm off to get dressed and head for preaching. REV, good to see you. Watch your email. By the way, is anyone wearing earrings? Blessings, all. --Romeena

Good afternoon, friends. Hazel, good to see you, even if just a "drive-by" post. Hope you're doing well. Did you get your surprise lilies planted? I got my landscaper friend to plant mine, with me not present, so they will truly be "surprise lilies" for me when they come up. He said he felt like a big Easter bunny!
Possum, bless your little heart. I wish I had an answer for you, but I know precious little about such matters. What De§ said makes sense to me, though. The only advice I could offer would be, for pete's sake, get that girl a lawyer!! There are too many sharks in the water to be trying to navigate alone. I would not make another move, sign another paper or appear in another court room without a legal eagle at my side, if I were you.
Well, we're up to 66 degrees here now, so cool and pleasant out there. The skies are beautifully clear, such a pretty blue, breeze blowing, soft sunlight, and I can almost hear my pansies singing, they're so happy. This is pansy weather, and the petunias are still happy because it hasn't gotten too cold for them yet. My flower island is just a riot of color. I love it!!
Well, off I go. The kitchen fairies didn't come today, so guess I'd better go clean up the mess in there myself. It's not from cooking - I always clean as I go when I cook - but glasses and plates have a way of accumulating, because I hate to empty the dishwasher and when it's full, there's no place to put the dirty stuff. Lazy me, I'm disgusted with myself!
Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Yes, Ro, I got the lilies planted, but an odd thing happened (at least I didn't expect it). I planted them, quite deep like you said, and figured that they would pop up in the spring. At least any bulbs I've ever planted before, you plant in the fall and they come up in the spring (in our area). So, I planted them within a week after I got them, and they are already up. Not just peeping out of the soil, but about 3 or 4 inches tall. (no flowers of course, just green). Maybe I should have planted them even deeper. I think I'll cover them with leaves or something, since we'll soon be getting more snow... I hope they do ok, I'm looking forward to having them. Thanks again.

November 16, 2008 - Msg 67998:
Good evening, folks! Hazel, you didn't do a thing wrong with those lilies. They did exactly what they were supposed to do. After the blooms die back, which had just happened when your bulbs were dug, they start sending up foliage, which looks a lot like the foliage of liriope, or the big variety of monkey grass. It will make a mound of that narrow, strappy foliage, which will last most of the winter. It will die back in the spring or early summer, leaving nothing but dirt until along about late September. Then the bloom stalks, which will resemble asparagus sprouts at first, will appear. They'll just about "grow before your very eyes" and will quickly be about two feet tall and will burst into those exploding firecracker blooms. As they die down, the whole cycle repeats. It's a good sign that yours sent up foliage, apparently they weren't too traumatized by being dug up and shipped. I hope you enjoy them - I think they're fun. Remember, they WILL multiply! Next fall, after they bloom, you might want to check them - just dig lightly to see how far out they've spread. Also, don't be surprised if a stray pops up somewhere - I think they also propagate by seeding at times. Either that, or squirrels move the bulbs.
Boo, you can get corn gluten meal and dry molasses at most garden centers. The stickers won't disappear overnight, it may take a couple of seasons, but eventually they'll die out. Another thing you can do, especially in the area that will be lawn, is just to pull the nasty little things up. Carry a plastic bag when you're out there, and whenever you see a sticker burr plant, just pull it up gently, trying not to dislodge the burrs. They are the seeds, of course. Drop them in the bag and take them offsite for disposal. Personally, I'd burn them and warm my hands by the fire, all the while saying heeheeheehee! Every seed you remove from the site is one less plant. Why are the seeds in the form of a burr? So they can cling to the fur of a passing animal, and get a free ride to another location, to start another colony of hateful little burrs.
I'm assuming you're talking about the common old grassbur, or sticker burr. Little round thing with very sharp points sticking out everywhere. If you're talking about those little brown, tightly-coiled things that get on your socks and refuse to budge, that's another story. They are the seeds of a type of clover, and if they get on your socks you might as well toss 'em, because you'll never get the burrs off. Sugarplum tried to potty in a patch of that clover once, on a road trip. I combed and brushed her for two days, and she was still full of little black speckles. At least they aren't painful like the bigger burrs.
Sticker burrs. Another thing to put on my "Why?" list for when I get to heaven, along with mosquitoes, roaches, and my neighbor's fat-bellied, bird-chasing cat. I watered that stinkin' thing twice today. I wouldn't hurt him for anything, but I surely don't mind sending him home wet when I can.
Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

No moulage...you really know how to hurt a girl. I guess I will have to drag out my soapbox and complain about something. Well, as I have said before, my husband doesn't want to get rid of the cable TV, and while I don't watch much, I turn it on sometimes, although I have given up on the news. I flipped it on this morning while Sean was still asleep and I landed on USA network. I was more than a little mad at what I saw. This was during the day on basic cable, no pay channels or anything. Some movie that I found out later was one of those American Pie movies was on and I would not even hint at what the scene was about, but what I can't figure out is why it is allowed. Aren't there rules about what is indecent on your basic cable networks? It makes me sick. Does anyone know how that works?
Better go...things to do.

I hear you, BOO. We have been debating and debating about giving up cable for months. I don't watch a whole lot on tv these days, but what I do watch is only available on cable. It's sad to say, but I have been having a real tough time giving up the few shows I like, such as "Top Chef" (new season just started!), "Jon and Kate PLus Eight" (Nora loves this show, too), "Mon," "Psych," and "Little People, Big World." I also love to watch the classics on TCM. I recently relapsed and am watching TAGS on TV Land--even though I swore off on that station a while ago--but think I will swear off it again since they will start playing "CSI" tonight.
Right now, we have tons of channels blocked, everything from MTV and AMC (since when is "Porkie's" an American movie classic?) to Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network.

He caulked my shower and the front hall bathroom tub surround, he put new weatherstripping around my front door where the cold wind was whistling in, took all thirteen lighted deer off the garage wall and carried them to the back yard for me. I'll get them placed and lighted over the next few days. He moved my plumeria trees to the garage - that job took both of us - him to put the pots on the dolly and move it, me to support the limbs and guide them through narrow places. He made a new plexiglas carpet guard for my bedroom door to keep Starr from tearing up the carpet, and cut a plywood top for a plant stand I bought at a garage sale. We sat in the sunroom and ate lunch and shared good conversation. I'm so blessed to have a friend like Ted. He'll send me a bill in a few days, and it will be for much less than it should be. God is good.
I have Dish Network, and am pretty happy with it. I don't subscribe to HBO and the other movie channels, and there is still plenty from which to choose. One feature I like is the ability to create my own "favorites" list. With that, when I bring up the listings, it only shows the channels I've chosen to be included in my list. I can click again and go to the "all channels" list, or go to "all subscribed" which shows everything on my subscription, or the "all channels" list, which shows everything they offer, whether I subscribe or not, or the "all HD" which only shows those channels that are broadcast in HD. I could make a "kid's list" that would only display those channels that I deem suitable for my grandkids. Lots of flexibility. I'm thinking of making one list that is headed "narrow choices", which will only display those eight or ten channels that I frequently watch.
I got a call from the cruise organizer - they're taking reservations NOW for next year's cruise. If anyone thinks there's any possibility you might go, I would highly recommend it. If you're interested, I can help you get in touch with the organizer.
Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Otis: "I just can't sleep in a strange room!"
Barney: "Come on, boy. Let's put your things in that other cell."

accommodate this guy and give him any cell he wants?!"
Barney: "Well, he's an old customer. I suppose it's no more than right."

Chuck-I'm sure you've noticed but M-T has such high regard for me it causes him to gibberish when ever I am mentioned. Although, in this case, he's pretty close to right. I do live in the "other" New York, not the city so nice they named it twice. I'm a hillbilly from Western NY. We do have about 18 inches of snow so far but it looks like it's tailing off. If ya like snow ya gotta wonder down Asa & Hazel's end of the Porch. I think they usually have us beat.
Romeena-We have DirecTV and we set our channels up the same way you do. I know I would really miss A&E, History Channel, Military Channel and some others. I've found my biggest outrage, while watching TV with the kids, is when the network commericals run during a family show. Those network ads are the smuttest thing seen on our TV. I wish they'd flash a warning or something before they run those.

Hello Porch Family:
Thanks M-T, I'm here. Just been busier than a one-armed paper hanger with the 7 year itch.
Is it snowing on your side of the porch? We have about a fine covering (from snow squalls) Still COLD here on this side.
I do pray for all the family here on the porch, even though I get little "peeks" at the goin's on. Maybe things will settle down now for a while.
Love ya'll. ~New Neighbor

MDC, since you are doing your bible study time on Monday evenings, maybe you can remember us while we are at the drug rehab that night (you probably already do, but thought I would mention it). Don't want to get anybody down, but I wanted to mention a young girl named Jennifer who one of the staff members brought to us before we left. They asked us to listen talk with her and pray for her. She is the sweetest little red-headed girl. She is just lovely and doesn't look like she belongs in a drug rehab. She tried to hop the fence today and got cut up trying to escape, but then came back because she had no place to run to. She is having a terrible time because her mother has cancer and is very sick and the girl can't be with her for at least 6 months. We were able to talk with her and pray with her but she has some very deep hurts and scars. She attempted suicide with a drug overdose before coming to rehab. So much pain there. She needs the peace of God. Please remember her in your prayers. It would mean alot to me...also for her mother who has advanced breast cancer.
Too tired to say much else tonight but will be back in the morning with my coffee.

Me-They, do you have a neighbor named IOU?
To whoever it was that was quoting Barney and Ron Baily, it got me to thinking about the Incredible Hulk. Good thing they didn't get him too mad, cause you never know that even though life was black and white in those days, there's still a chance that ole Ron Bailey could have started turning a little green. If ya know what I mean.
auh20, stay in and stay warm if you can.
I wouldn't want that ALL the time, mind ya.... but maybe say this Christmas you could send 7 or 8 inches just this once?
I know it could get old after a while though.
Good night to all.

Hey to my porch friends, I meant to be back in my rocking chair long before now, but spent most of the day in the bed with another one of those wretched migraines. The headache is gone, but I'm feeling pretty drained, they normally do that to me. Now, if someone could please tell me why some women feel the need to bathe in those stinking, cheap perfumes before they go out in public?? I don't wear perfume, but I don't mind others wearing it, in moderation for crying out loud, but some of us folks suffer from migraines that are triggered by certain smells. Vanilla Musk, by Jovan will cause mine, within just a few minutes of smelling it, I feel the sickness & pain coming on. I went to the grocery store today to get stuff for fixing stew for supper & I swear every woman in that place was wearing that cr@p! Needless to say, we didn't have stew for supper, I was lucky to get home & get it all put away before I was hugging the toilet. Makes me so mad, do people just not think? or perhaps they just don't care, or both? All I know, is my whole day was shot because 4 women in the grocery felt the need to put on that perfume, that IMO should be outlawed, instead of just taking a bath like normal people do! Now, you want to know how I really feel about stinking perfume??
Oh, & Tom you can just keep that snow with you, or send it to Chuck he sounds like he might want some of it. ;)
I'm off to find something to eat & hope I can keep it down. See you fine folks later & please, no perfume on the porch.

Mavis, I know what you mean. My reaction is nowhere near that strong, but I do find heavy perfumes offensive, and they frequently give me a headache. Not a migraine, just a dull old headache, but it's still no fun. I'm not familiar with "Vanilla Musk", but I do know that I don't tolerate "Charlie" well. Fortunately, it's a bit out of style now, no one wears it much anymore. I like to wear a fragrance, but I usually stick to the light stuff from Bath and Body Works. Inexpensive, doesn't cling to everything, and usually wears off in a couple of hours.
A little snow around here would be nice, especially if we could have it for Christmas. I have a sneaky feeling we might have a very cold winter. I tried to dig up a worm or two for my goldfish today, and couldn't find any! Usually they're everywhere, can't stick a hand trowel in the ground without hitting at least one. Today, Ted finally found one when he was digging and working on those lights, but it was the only one. I think they've gone deeper into the ground, expecting cold weather. So - maybe we'll get some snow! That would be fun.
Well, I'm off to bed. Little Starr is worn out, she's been playing so hard, and is just collapsed at my feet. I'll have to carry her to bed, I guess, like a little kid. So precious. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

You know MAVIS, I learned my lesson about perfume years ago. One sunday morning, I went to church wearing CoCo Channel (not cheap perfume by a long shot, but still has the same negative effect on some people). I didn't have much on, but I sat next to this very nice man in sunday school, who almost immediately began to sneeze and have an allergy attack. I got right up and went to the ladie's room to wash it off, but I felt terrible about it, so I don't wear perfume anymore. All that channel is just sitting in the cabinet (not really my style, anyway..I'm not the sophisticated type). Now, I (like Romeena) use a light body spray from Bath & Body works after my shower (mostly just to smell sweet for hubby when I come to bed) and that's it...not too strong and I haven't caused anyone an allergy attack in years!
I have to get Erin to school and then I will look at Miss Laci's pictures. I have Emily to watch today so I will be one busy Boo.

Hugs, kisses and my mighty meatballs for all (double helping for M-T)!

Sorry about the foundation delay, HM...boy, can I relate. Hope our new plans are ready soon. I'm afraid we are going to be building during hurricane season.
Well, I am tired...Emily is into the pots and pans right now and putting the mesh strainer on her head. She has fallen off her little chair, hit her head on the table twice, and been into everything! Her mom should be here to get her soon. I love her so much and have fun with her, but it isn't easy running after a toddler. I just saw an episode on Nanny 911, with an amazing couple who had adopted 23 special-needs kids, and the dad of the family is in a wheelchair from a spinal injury. They have no outside help and the poor woman does it all herself. They had young boys who were brain-damaged from abuse, one with CP, others with physical deformities, and a few from Russian orphanges! Wow, talk about self-sacrifice.

I was reading back through some posts just now, and saw where ya'll were discussing TV these days.So I had to add my two cents. Last week I was flipping through the channels after work one day, it was early afternoon and I came across TheN now I dont have kids, but I'm assuming that chennel is for like pre-teen age kids. And for the life of me I cant remember the name of the show, but I couldn't believe it!! It was like a teenagery age show, and here's two teenage girls on there involved in a "relationship" is the lightest way I know to describe it. Grossed me out at first, then it just made me mad that this is the kind of stuff the kids are watching. Maybe I'm too old, and not having kids I guess I'm not up to snuff on the stuff thats out there now, but man when I was growing up, there wasn't anything like this stuff on TV. I remember watching The Cosby Show, and Family Ties and it was nothing like what I saw on that channel. I guess thats why I'm still hooked on the old shows dont have to worry about the shock factor. And while I'm at it, whats happened to TV Land, back in the day it was nothing but the old, good shows, now they are even trying to modernize it. I'm not watching CSI this week, and have yet to watch Scrubs either. Anyways, I better hush. I'll get off the soap box now and let somebody else have it for awhile. Hope ya'll have a good afternoon. Stay Warm!! Salty Dog

November 18, 2008 - Msg 68052:
Hey there, Salty Dog. I think we just need to build a bigger soap box for that topic, because I think we'd all like to hop on. Scrubs? I watched half of one episode, and could feel my brain turning to mush, and my wires crossing as I searched for something genuinely funny. CSI? I know people who are almost addicted to that one, but I fail to see the appeal. I used to watch TV Land a lot, but these days I bail out much of the time, except for TAGS, Beaver, Lucy and sometimes Gunsmoke. WGN will have something good now and then, but it's getting harder and harder to find good old reruns.
I agree with you completely - with the old shows you could watch all day and never see anything offensive, and you just might come across some pretty good philosophy. There were examples of good parenting - Ward Cleaver, Cliff Huxtable - with strong doses of honesty and fair play thrown in. There was campy, silly good humor - The Hillbillies, Gilligan - and going way back, some really offbeat but funny stuff in Dobie Gillis. Remember Bob Denver as the original beatnik, Maynard G. Krebbs? Harmless fun - I'd love to see that show brought back.
I'm afraid most of the teens of today are just far too "sophisticated" to appreciate genuine good humor. If a show doesn't have a s#xual theme and a lot of bad language - well, it's just juvenile and they're not interested. What a shame.
OK, that's my rant. I'll leave the box out. Who's next? --Romeena
