October 23, 2008 - Msg 67260: Good afternoon, porch. Just on my way to work, but wanted to stop and set a spell. Floyd, I think Two Chairs is great! I visited, dumb ol' me didn't realize there were two sessions, so I heard the second one, ran out of time and had to leave before hearing the first part. I'll remedy that this weekend when I have time to enjoy it. As for suggestions, would a phone-in Q&A be feasible? Technically, it would probably be quite a challenge.

Thanks for the thoughts on my grandson's knee injury. I'm sure he'll bounce back, I just hate it that he'll be sidelined for this whole season, when he was doing so well.

Boo, Bruce is really in a bad place, isn't he? I'm guessing it's going to take surgery to get him past this. Will he accept it? I guess he will if he's hurting bad enough. I remember when my dad was just in misery with his back and the docs wanted to operate. He flatly refused, and my mom got very upset with him. The doctor told her to just leave him alone, because "when the pain gets bad enough, surgery will become HIS idea, not mine." Sure enough, in a couple of weeks, he was asking my mother for the phone number. He had the surgery (a microdiskectomy) and was up and walking without pain that evening. Marvelous! Of course, it depends on what's wrong, but that's my dad's story.

Well, gotta get my monkey suit on and get to work. I'm dreading Starr's reaction when she realizes I'm leaving again. Poor little thing, she just shakes like a leaf, swallows and yawns, all signs of high anxiety. She forgives me quickly, though, as soon as I get back home. I'm not sure how she's going to handle the six days I'll be gone while I'm on the Mayberry cruise. A friend is coming to stay with her, but she's not me, and that is one bonded-to-mom puppy.

October 23, 2008 - Msg 67262: Well, Romeena, Bruce doesn't have a disc problem. His is a chronic muscle injury. You can actually see it. It looks like a softball size area of swelling at about the level of the kidneys and on the right side near the spine. When I say softball, I don't mean that it sticks out that big. The area is circular and about as big around as a softball. The swelling in the area is actually pushing his spine to the left and you can see that, too. The swelling causes pressure on the nerves and he is just miserable at times. I hate for him to keep having to take the steroids and I guess I secretly fear he might get addicted to the narcotics for pain..he is only taking that once a day, though. The neurologist said surgery wasn't really an option and that he just has to rest it and it will take months to heal to the point that he is comfortable. He will never be able to do the kind of work he is used to doing without the risk of re-injuring it again. I feel for him because he is a strong man and has always been capable of doing alot of hard work. He also has a birthday on Tuesday and will be turning 51, which only reminds him that he is "NO SPRING CHICKEN". Poor thing.

Well, it is much cooler outside but the air conditioner is on the blink and it is 80 degrees inside the house right now...yuck. I can't get a break when it comes to the heat. The windows are open but it just doesn't seem to be cooling off.

HM, this apartment we are in right now is a 3 bedroom, 1100 sq ft apartment and we are in pretty close quarters (all 5 of us and Gizzy)! Getting those extra sq feet you will be getting will feel great, I am sure.

Hope poor little Starr manages alright at home tonight. I understand now that we have Gizzy living with us. He is very nervous when he hears the sound of car keys or senses that someone (anyone) is leaving, especially me or my mother-in-law. He is a very sweet chihuahua, but anxious about being alone. We took him to the vet to get a check-up and even though he was scared to death, he never growled or snapped when his blood was drawn or his nails clipped. The vet tech said he was unusual for a chihuahua and had a very sweet disposition. We knew that, of course.

Hey Boo, sorry about Bruce's back. But it probably is a blessing it ain't a disk issue. Mine is, and my Doctor strongly suggests thst surgery be a last option. The stats he gave me concerning fusions are not encouraging at all. And I know of several folks who have had back surgery and come out of it worse than when they went in. They have told me the worse desicion they ever made was to do the surgery. But then I hear about others like Ro's Dad who come out of it great. I have dealt with mine for about 10 years now, and although have had to make some pretty significant lifestyle changes to cope with it, have been managing pretty well until this past year. For whatever reason this last 10 months, it has really been bothering me a lot. For the first time I am getting a shooting pain down my left leg, and it's getting worse. (Pretty soon I'll be competing with Emma Watson for pains that go places) Anyway, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to do my job. As an electrician there is a fair amount of bending, twisting, turning and lifting that is all part of the job. So this is turning into a bigger concern for me. Sorry folks, I don't mean to carry on, but I could sure use some of y'alls prayers on what to do here. It's making me tense. :)

ROMEENA: I'm sorry you didn't care for the clip. I obviously don't agree with Ron's political views, but I still thought the concept was very funny. And I didn't mind hearing his opinions because even though he was supportive of someone I won't be voting for, he wasn't mean spirited about it.

I have friends who are ardent Obama supporters, same as I have friends who are out campaigning for McCain. I don't agree with them, but I know that they are sincere in their beliefs that he's the best candidate. I may look at it differently than some, but it just doesn't shock or disappoint me to hear that someone doesn't agree with me on a candidate. I figure Ron, Andy, and teh Fonz are entitled to their opinions, and I'm entitled to mine. But I can see the humor in the clip, same as I can enjoy and SNL skit of Palin, Clinton, or Obama (Darrell Hammond does a mean Bill).

MT- Speaking for myself, I saw it on ET last night, and what disappoints me about it is that Andy has always been such an ardent believer, yet he did this 180 turnabout just for a "funny" spot for someone who leans so far to the side of what is so potentially devastating. Again, I speak strictly for myself, but I have to look down the road past January 20, 2009 and I see at least two supreme court justices being placed, socialized medicine on the horizon, taxes, taxes, taxes,etc etc etc; so the 'funniness' of something has to take second billing for me.

It's just that I see so much danger and potential serious harm to all that America stands for in Mr. O, that I found it shocking to see conservative, hearth-and-home people like Andy and (I thought) Ron Howard supporting him. I too have friends who are favoring him, though admittedly very few, and in most cases they are folks who have been swayed by his mantra of "hope and change", and are looking no deeper than that. I just expected better of Ron and Andy. The Fonz is an unknown quantity and I had no expectations of him, one way or the other. Apparently I didn't know the other two very well, either.

Oh well. To each his own. If the liberals have their way, we'll all have a chance to see who was right and who was wrong. Maybe I read too much, but after reading "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns", and now am in the middle of "Now They Call Me Infidel", I'm more convinced than ever that in Mr. O's direction lies danger. We shall see. I very sincerely hope and pray that I'm wrong.

You found the "retro" skits fun, and taken strictly on the surface, they were. The head rug that appeared and disappeared so abruptly, Fonz being unable to way "wrong" - creative stuff. It was just employed for the wrong reasons, in my opinion. As I said - another time, other circumstances, definitely another candidate - I could have found it funny. My morning wasn't bothered, either - I'm stronger than that. No offense intended, none taken, and I hope none taken by anyone else either. Differences - it's what makes the world go around.

I'll admit it does surprise me that Andy and Ron are Obama supporters, because I just didn't see them as ardent liberals, but I think what really surprised me was to see them using their considerable popularity and talent that way. I have always believed that sports stars, entertainment big names and the like should confine their opinions to their own circle of friends, just as the rest of us must do. It irritates me when they use their recognition factor as a platform - the only reason they're famous is because you and I have bought tickets to their movies or whatever. I don't think that gives them the right to spout their opinions to the whole world - (Oprah!) Maybe that's what bothered me the most about that clip. I've done it (too)many times myself, and the good people here(yourself included) have always been there to support me. And aside from good-natured comraderie, that's one thing this porch is here for.
I wish I could tell you more than "things will look better in time" or "every dark cloud has a silver lining". Both of which are true, but I can also say with assuredness, that everyone here will be praying for you. And I know without a shadow of doubt that prayer works, because God "works" with all of us.

I haven't been able to watch that video link you posted, Me-They, and I don't know that I want to. It does seem like it would be kind of disappointing, when I think about the values that are so prevalent in TAGS, being seemingly swept aside in support of someone who holds nearly none of them.

But that's just my opinion.

ROMEENA: I understand where you are coming from, and respect it. As far as Andy's politics, I guess it doesn't suprise me because he has actively campaigned for several North Carolina Democratic gubernatorial candidates over the years and is a life-long Democrat, by his own admission.

I agree that celebrity shouldn't entitle anyone to special circumstances, but teh reality is if you or I had our own television talk show (wouldn't that be a hoot!) or had the attention of millions, I'd bet that we'd take an opportunity or two to throw our two-cents in now and again. Most of us use the biggest soapbox we can climb on.

Now, about the Fonz, I, for one, do not believe for one minute that Author Fonzarelli is a Democrat. Now Ritchie did campaign for Stevenson, if I remember my episodes correctly, but underneath all that hair oil and leather, the Fonz was very conservative. Of course, who knows what like of stuff he has been reading with that library card of his? ;)

Different strokes--that's what makes it so darned interesting.

I have Democratic friends who stand for the same things. While I don't understand how some of my friends come to the conclusions they do with regard to this election, I do not doubt their values. I've never seen an episode of TAGS and thought that those characters had to be one political persuasion. Except maybe Mr. Weaver ;).

MT- Just to let you know, I did not post 67292, that was Chuck as he stated in 27295. But I do agree with his statement. You see, to lay it all out on the table, these days, meaning mainly since 1973, I FIRST have to look at morality before i look at ANY OTHER factor involved. If the nation were to vote along moral grounds first instead of for quick fixes or for a "hope and change slogan" first, then i truly believe we would be better off. Of course no candidate is perfect, but right now, with an aging supreme court in Washington DC, I could not, as a 'hot' Christian, (as opposed to a lukewarm one)(Rev.3), vote for someone who would install super-anti-God judges such as a replacement for Ginsberg, for example. Believe me, I have stressed this to BO supporters, but they almost seem "blinded" by his charismatic approach.
There was another historical charismatic leader somewhere in Europe about 60 some years ago who rose to power, with a little-known background, on a similar wave of support, and quite frankly, I am scared for our country if BO gets in.
Sorry to have gone on like this, but as the day quickly comes upon us, so do my opinions.
I know that I am far from perfect, and i know this porch isnt really the place for me to go on like this, and i promise this will be the only time that I will do so, but i just had to express it.

October 24, 2008 - Msg 67310: I have to ask you MT, just what is it that he stands for? I'm not being flippant with that question. He speaks one way, but his voting record screams something much different. I seldom listen to the empty promises made by candidates but much prefer to see what they have done prior. In Obama's case, there is not a lot of history there, in terms of public record because he has not had much experience. He has voted the majority of his time as not for or against, but rather present. Huh? Come on, take a stand and show some guts. I have noticed the only real issues he has actualy voted consistantly on is raisng taxes, 94% of the time. Hmmmm, but suddenly he's seen the light and will not raise my taxes, or better yet, lower them? Things just don't add up there.
My biggest disappointment in all this has been the media and their wanting to sway this thing. It should not surprize me. But this election has been unbelievably one sided in it's coverage.

Obama certainly is riding a phenomenal wave of support, and we really don't know a lot about him, but that other fellow of whom you speak rode a very violent, extremist wave of support (and not even a majority support). He spouted hate and bigotry from day one and went on to commit atrocities rarely seen on this planet. I'm sorry, Obama ain't my guy, but he's not that guy, either. Anyway, that's my final word! By the way, I have a certain litmus test I use on a candidate, one I'm sure you can infer. After that, the rest is icing on the cake: economy, defense, moose hunting, whatever. Maybe I shouldn't be that way, but I am. McCain's stand on stem cell research has given me pause, though.

He has been charged with Disorderly Conduct,Driving left of center,and illegal transfer of liquor.Not sure exactly what that last charge means-I'm guessing he had liquor in a container such as a soda bottle or something? I am new at this,so forgive me! He has tried to call me collect twice (I wasn't home-he was on machine) so I called the jail & found out. I told the person I spoke with to tell him that I am aware of the charges and for him to NOT call me collect. Each charge is $237,plus I'm sure there's a charge for his truck being impounded. I would let him stay in jail for 30 days (I think that's what I was told) but for the fact he needs to keep his job.I need that income from him right now until I figure out what I need to do.But.. this is the beginning of the end for us.So,I will get him out,but it will be later this weekend.Let him sit in there and stew for awhile.I have no pity for him.
I am beyond hurt.I am just numb. I'm trying to stay strong.Please continue to hold me in your thoughts & prayers.Y'all mean a lot to me.Love you guys.

Been busy day and no time to chat right now. After I clean up the kitchen, get Erin in the bath, take a shower...then I will try to come back...unless 20/20 is on...they are doing an interview with Hannah Overton, who is a local woman who was sentenced to life for her part in the death of a foster child that was in her care. A friend of mine is her chaplain and tells me that if all the evidence had been admissable in court, a jury would have found her innocent...I guess they will be discussing that on 20/20.

October 24, 2008 - Msg 67331: Y'all are making me cry! Thank you MDC,Hazel,and Spot.The fact that you care about me means more than you'll ever know.I found out a bit more. He was arrested in a town about 8 miles from here last night (well,this morning) around 12:30 am. His truck is probably over there.I know the arresting officer's name & that's who I need to speak to about the truck.The mayor over there was a very good friend of my late stepfather,so that might be helpful. Being that tomorrow is Saturday,I would have to go to the County Courthouse(30 miles away) before 12pm to pay the bond and then over to the jail where it would take up to 4 hours to process & release him. He has called his mom because she phoned me asking me to please get him out.It's going to drive that poor, sweet old lady crazy if I don't,so I guess I will do it tomorrow. That gives him 2 nights to sit in jail and think about things.If I were him,I'd prefer to stay in jail than come home & deal with me! Oh,I know the truth now- try as he might,he can't lie about alcohol anymore.
MDC,I'd like to think there is some hope left,but I have never told y'all the whole story .Maybe it's time now. I was married to him from 1986-1996. I divorced him because of all his drinking & craziness. I was happy,living my life,had a wonderful boyfriend,and then in 2001 I got a letter out of the blue from my ex telling me he had quit drinking and asking for another chance. Well,I gave him one and boy,he really fooled me.I thought he had changed.He was that good at hiding his problem. We got married again in 2005. And there have been quite a few drinking incidents.He is just too far gone,I guess.And I feel like the biggest fool.
But.. I'll be okay.I made a good life once without him and I can do it again.
Anyway,that's the story. I apologize to anybody wanting to talk Andy & Opie and got this instead!

October 24, 2008 - Msg 67333: Oh my goodness, Possum. I am so sorry. Alcohol does such a thorough job of destroying bodies, lives, marriages and families. I know, just as guns don't kill people, it's the person holding the gun that does it, so alcohol itself doesn't do all that, it's the person consuming it. I know that, but I also know that alcohol actively works on the mind and body of the individual, eventually bringing them to a place where they either cannot control their behavior, or they lose the will to try to do so. It's an insidious, destructive force, and I am so sorry you're having to deal with the effects of it.

I think we've discussed this before, but this is a prime example of the scripture that says the sins of the father will be visited upon the children to the third and fourth generation. That doesn't mean that God punishes the children for what the parents do. It simply refers to the natural progression of events when a parent or anyone else allows wrong behavior to rule their lives. It's pretty obvious that our dear little Possum is suffering right now, and you can be sure that her family is feeling the effects too, right down to little Laci. Her grandma's attention will be diverted, her moods will be altered - things will be changed by the behavior of this man, it's inevitable. The Domino Effect clearly demonstrated, I guess. I think you're handling things right. I'd much prefer to let him sit it out in jail for a few more days, but you're right to take pity on his mom and get him out for her sake. As for feeling like a fool - don't. Again, I think you did the right thing. You made a loving decision, you forgave and gave him another chance, and he blew it. If you hadn't done that, you would always have wondered, but now you know for sure. He may someday dry out and finally achieve full sobriety, but the chances are small. Even if he does, he's not immune to the domino effect either, and if you move on without him, he will have to live with the consequences of what he's done.

Be strong, dear, pray hard, and listen to God's voice. He will tell you what you must do. Be very careful, though, that it's God's voice you're listening to, and not your husband's pleading, your own tender heart, or the counsel of friends or family, including us. Let God lead. --Romeena

I have no idea why really--life just gets hectic and I may not be a frequent visitor yet, but it's so nice to know that when I stop by, you're all here having great conversations and praying for one another. We bath her and she still stinks terrible. She also seems to have a skin problem. She chews her feet till they're raw. I've taken her to the vet and they gave her ear medicine--didn't help. They gave her some kind of allergy shot--didn't help. I've tried different food, etc. I have no idea what to do. I just wondered since you deal with so many dogs if you had any ideas and/or natural remedies to try.
