October 20, 2008 - Msg 67171: Good evening, neighbors. Hazel, to answer your question - not really all that far. All one has to do is cross the city limits and you can find all sorts of package stores, convenience stores sell beer, grocery stores sell beer and wine, etc. From my house, it's about three miles, but it's definitely not walkable - it's across the river and over highway. What it would do for me is put beer in a convenience store that's about a quarter mile from the house. The specific people I mentioned, whom I suspect of being the bottle-tossers, are mostly illegals. Every night after about 6p.m., there are 8 to 10 cars around the house. I'm sure it's just a big dormitory inside. Because Irving police are really cracking down on illegals, handing them over to Immigration and fostering deportation, the people generally come home sober and stay home to drink. They don't get out and drive in the evening or late at night. They do walk up and down the sidewalks at night, though. Having beer sold within walking distance would just be a dream come true for them.

However, that's the least of my concerns. I wish I could send you pictures of the main streets of surrounding communities where package stores and such are legal, and then a picture of our town's main strip. The difference is like night and day. Strip clubs, bars, liquor stores - none of that here in Irving. However, because of the very loose zoning laws, things will change rapidly if the liquor ban is changed. Yes, zoning can be changed, but it takes a lot of time to get that done, during which time the undesirable businesses will pop up like mushrooms, and once in place, it's almost impossible to enact zoning laws that would shut them down. Almost certainly, they would be "grandfathered" and allowed to remain. At the time our zoning laws were written, no one could foresee a time when Irving would be anything but totally dry. It was only in the last ten years or so that liquor by the drink was voted in. Old Irving just sort of "grew", evolving over time, and is very loosely zoned. New Irving, the north extension where all the push for the booze is coming from, was planned and zoned very carefully, and they will never suffer from the blight we will see if the change passes.

I have a question about the episode where Andy and Helen are going on the picnic, and Warren and Goober are trying to keep them from going. Andy is determined to get all their gear into the trunk of the squad car, even resorting to smashing the trunk lid down and ruining some of the food. Does anyone know why on earth he didn't just put some of it in the back seat??? Just like a man....

Well, I'm headed for the ironing board. See you good folk in the morning. Be blessed! --Romeena

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67177: Good morning everyone. Another beautiful day the Lord has made!

Prayers for Jamie, KY GIRL, and continued prayers for you. Prayers for Bruce's back, too, BOO. How's Erin?

REV: That's great you all were able to get together like that. Maybe one day you and GOOBER can sing at our first annual Taylor's Front Porch picnic. Wouldn't that be fun?

ROMEENA: I remember when we used to visit Plano that if you wanted to buy a drink in a resturant you had to have a membership card of some sort, which you could buy for a dollar or something. I hope that things work out for your community. Nothing worse than people who move into a neighborhood and want to take over right away. Like Floyd would say, "Pushy!"

HM: How about things you don't want to find in your Halloween basket: Mary Janes, BB-Bats, Now & Laters, squished miniature Reese Cups, Special Darks, Circus Peanuts, and Almond Joys. Oh, and meatballs.

We let the kids trick-or-treat with our friends children in their close neighborhood. This year, Chad is Darth Vader (or, as he says, "Dark Vader with his light saver"), Veda is JoJo (from the show "JoJo's Circus," she's a clown), and Nora is going to be Lucy (as in Ricardo). She thought that up on her own. I'll take some pictures.

Well, lots of work today. Hope you all are feeling at peace this morning.

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67179: "Dark Vader with his LIFE saver"! hahaha, how cute...made me laugh...PLEASE take some pics of the kids to send to the album. We don't trick or treat but our church is having a fall festival for the kids so they can dress up and eat lots of candy safely. I found a great costume at the thrift store for Erin. It's a medeival princess costume, complete with velvet, brocade and beads. So cute and she has actually agreed to wear it. I will have to talk her into letting me curl her hair or something. The youth kids are having an "All Hallow's Eve" celebration after the fall festival. They will be dressed as different saints and martyrs and will do an oral report on their character. Prizes awarded for best costume and report. I'm thinking of fixing Sean up as an old man so he can be Polycarp.

Erin is doing much better, the infection is responding well to the sulpha drug, and she is full of energy. I brought home her schoolwork yesterday and I think she has already done a whole week's worth and is now in motion constantly. Right now she is throwing a hackysack (sp?) for Gizzy.

I like BB-Bats and Now and Laters. Things I DON't like to find..all the others M-T listed and those hard candies wrapped in cellophane.

Yep, M-T, I'll bet that little bit of poetry did scare you.

Sorry to hear about the problems in Old Irving, Romeena. It's a real shame and I don't like the idea of people drinking and walking past your house at night. Maybe you need a Doberman for Starr to play with!

Prayers for Jamie, KYGirl (and you, too). Keep that good attitude.

"Hey" to SPOT and HM.

Better get up and do something. You know, it is hot outside, and I mean hot. Will be up to nearly 90 with high humidity. Wish some of you could send some cooler temps my way.

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67180: Aww, that brings back memories, Me-They. Kai was JoJo when she was about 3. I loved her in that costume.
I'll bet all your kids will look cute.
And Darth Vader, YES! You are talking to a real Star Wars freak here(freak not the operative word though).
As for Nora, don't you love it when your kids decide to be someone(or something) that you would never expect them to want to be?! That's neat. Maybe next year she will want to be Helen Crump or Thelma Lou. :)

Hope Jamie feels better fast, KY Girl.

hm, I always loved Boston Baked Beans for some reason. They were just so "foreign" to me. Of course, then I read the box and found out they weren't made in Boston. ;)
Yeah, BBB and those chewy peanut butter things that come in those black and orange wrappers. Those were my favorites.

Well, I talked with the two counselors yesterday at Kai's school. They were both very nice, and both said they were very glad I had asked about it because they only had two other parents inquire about it. Then they gave me one of the workbooks(just some papers stapled together) to take home and the one counselor, who isn't the resident counselor at that school, said she has a copy of the video she could send home with Kai tomorrow(today) as it was at the school she works out of. So I said I don't know if I really needed to see it now after talking with them, but said ok anyway.
As it turns out, she saw on her schedule that they were going to be showing the video to Kai's class today(Tuesday), so she very generously went out of her way to go get it and dropped it off at our house. I thought that was nice.

The video(and workbook) was pretty much what I had hoped it would be, and what they said it would be. Just very general(in fact, my wife called it "abstract" and wondered if the kids would even "get" what it was talking about) and done with a serious message but with a lighthearted tone(I don't really know how to explain that - it wasn't graphic though). There was just one scene that I thought was kind of creepy involving a sister's boyfriend babysitting the sister's younger sibling. Again not overly graphic in the depiction or theme, it just had to do with this little girl alone with this older guy and her feeling weird when he sometimes tickles her or wants to tuck her in.
Anyway, just the way it was edited or something was creepy about it. With the young girl feeling kind of ashamed and sad talking to her older sister almost in flashback mode, like something had happened with the boyfriend. Well, that and the stupid music they had in the background which made it hard to hear what the little girl was saying.
But it ends up with the younger girl standing up(like Superman/girl) and telling the boyfriend that she doesn't want him in her room and that he makes her feel uncomfortable.

So, all in all, it was pretty much what I expected and nothing we haven't told Kai about already, in a general way. So she'll watch the video today and we'll talk about it tonight.

I don't care what you say, Me-They, I am not smelling your feet. As for giving you something good to eat, I don't feel like cooking today. ;)

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67184: Good morning, all. You're right, that was the point, Boo, and they put it over very well. Andy was even standing in a very self-conscious posture, all slump-shouldered. He has good legs, so aside from the dorky shirt and the sandals, he looked okay. Opie has surprisingly chubby little legs, though, or am I the only one who thinks so?

Reading back over my recent posts, I realize I'm making my neighborhood sound seedy and dangerous, and it's not like that at all. That's exactly what we're trying to guard against with this vote -yet again. No, the homes are still nice and well kept. We do have that one "dorm" house up the street, but they got the message pretty quick. When they first moved in, the grass got very tall and they were parking cars on the lawn out front. They had big parties on the weekend, men sitting around in and ON the cars, loud music, beer flowing.

I just kept quiet, because I know my neighbor across the treet. Took her about two weeks, and she was all over it. She called the city, the cars were moved to the driveway, street or wherever, the grass was mowed, and the parties were held in the back yard. We can still hear the music, but at least we don't have to look at the men in undershirts behaving like fools. As time goes by, they're settling down a little, too. I do see two or three people out walking late at night now and then - ran into them when taking the trash out - but that's a cultural thing. It's what people do in Mexico. They may not even be the ones leaving the beer bottles, but somebody does, a couple of times a month, usually just one or two bottles.

We do have zoning laws regarding single-family residences, but they're hard to enforce. When investigated, these people just claim that they're all one family. Aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, whatever. It's hard to enforce. Try to make it so that it's one tax-payer Head of Household and his dependents? Then my granddaughter couldn't have lived here with me. One nuclear family? Define that. See what I mean? It's a sticky wicket.

I'm glad Erin is feeling better, Boo. I just hate it when one of our porch kids is sick. Sterling, I'm glad things worked out okay with the issue at Kai's school. They usually do, but I seriously applaud your vigilance, because sometimes they don't, and that's why you have to continue to watch.

Well, be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67185: Uh, our church is a Baptist church by name, but we are pretty mixed (I didn't say "mixed up" ha). Our youth pastor is a very interesting person and loves church history, so it was his idea. There is much to be learned from the history of the saints. I think he is coming as his favorite saint, St. Patrick.

Well, that does sound better, Romeena. Glad things are still good in your neighborhood. I am sometimes concerned that you are living alone, but I know the Lord is watching over you and you are in His care. Thank you, concerning Erin, she seems to be doing just fine and the wound is healing. She is supposed to see the dermatologist about her rash and have the mole removed from her scalp tomorrow. I guess we can still do that. I am wondering if it's a good idea while she has this staph infection, though.

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67187: Hey, MDC. Actually, Baptists do acknowledge and recognize the individuals who have been declared saints by the Catholic church. We don't offer them the veneration that Catholics do, we don't pray to them or consider them to have special powers, but we recognize and respect the quality of their life and the events that caused them to be singled out by the Catholic church and to be declared a "saint". As you said, St. Francis of Assisi is widely known, and I have always appreciated his philosophy of love and respect and caring for the wild things. So, while we Baptists and other non-Catholics may not revere the saints or believe that they have special power or influence with our Lord, we certainly do respect those individuals for the lives they led and the things they accomplished. Does that about say it, Boo? --Romeena

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67190: Thanks for your concern, Boo, but actually I think I'm pretty safe. There are unsavory individuals in close proximity, as I mentioned earlier, but if you check one of those maps on the internet, you'll see that there are hardly any areas that don't have "red flags". The house is designed for security, as well. The front door is solid wood, no glass nearby, and is a deadbolt lock with a two-inch throw. The back door is glass panels, but is a double-key lock so even if the glass is broken, the door can't be unlocked without the key. The bolt is also a two-inch throw. The door into the garage is steel with a deadbolt, and the garage door opener is one that cannot be scanned for the code. Also, I have a kill switch on it, so I can just turn the opener off completely. I have a Brinks alarm system, and I use it consistently. It includes door and window alarms, glass-break alarms, and there are three motion sensors, that cover the entire house. I also have little Starr who has ears like a lynx, and I have a baseball bat behind the bedroom door. If this liquor thing passes and they start selling booze up on the corner, I will get a gun, and I do know how to use it.

Just for what it's worth - this liquor election isn't about drys trying to keep wets from drinking. People can drink all they want, that's an individual choice. This is about keeping the package stores and all that comes with them out of Irving. All we have to do is drive down Northwest Highway to see what we'll look like in a couple of years if this passes. Our committee has identified over 160 locations in Old Irving alone that will almost certainly become points of sale, and dozens more where "clubs" can be built, and likely will be. One of those sites is about 500 feet from our church. Isn't that lovely??

I'm planning to go to a meeting at City Hall tonight, where the issue will be debated. I may not do anything but stand and hold a "Vote No" sign, but I'll be there. --Romeena

That is interesting about the saints issue. Many martyrs who refused to worship a king or whoever throughout the ages, that is for sure. One thing thing about the praying to them, that pretty much changed after the Vatican II council, but I do know some little old ladies and some latinos who still do, and I try to talk to them about it. Unfortunately, it got very ingrained in the latino culture, and it's very hard to change that.
And, poor St. Patrick gets the bad rap every year when people get knock down drunk on his feast day. That is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard of, but then again, drunks look for any occasion to do that! That is very interesting however, I never knew that about the Baptists.
Do you want me to shout "we will not sing" at the meeting tonight? haha
MT will hold your "down with the gold standard" sign. ha
Prayers for all (right to the true, living God!)-- :)

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67192: MDC: Methodists regard Roman Catholic saints as well. It makes sense that Protestants should revere Roman Catholic saints. After all, all Christians were of the Catholic persuasion before the Reformation, and many of the famous among the pantheon of saints were sainted before that time. Even old Martin Luther and the like knew that there was no good reason to discount the lives of early Christians and Christian martyrs just because they broke with some tennets of the church.

STERLING: They do grow up fast, don't they? I was 12 years old when the original "Star Wars" movie came out. Of course I had to have all the action figures and spaceships. I grew out of the toys pretty quick, but I had the foresight (okay, it was just dumb luck) to save them. I had about two dozen of the 4 inche figures, the Millenium Falcon, a landspeeder, and an X-wing fighter. A couple of months ago I pulled them out of storage and gave them to Chad. You would have thought Christmas came. He's already lost several of the guns and broken one of the ships (not on purpose), but, you know what, I really don't care; this is what I saved them for. I'm loving these toys now more than I ever did then.

Also, we were at a Target the other week and saw one of the new Millenium Falcon ships. It's about the same size, but has a few more bells and whistles, or should I say lasers? It was $150! Maybe I should have saved it for Christmas.

BOO: I sure will atke a picture. The Mrs. and I agonized years ago about the Halloween thing. I have fond memories of trick or treating, and really wanted to pass that on. To me, and my family, we focus on the fun of the holiday and not the ghoulish. So far, the kids have shown absolutely no interest in the darker elements of it and we keep all that stuff at arms distance. We have gotten almost all teh kids costumes at thrift shops. This year, the Mrs. found Veda' costume in our local penny saver. It is a quality, complete costume and was only $5. Your church's events sounds really neat. I enjoy churchy history (heck, most history) as well.

October 21, 2008 - Msg 67194: Hey, Leon, you summed it up in one short phrase. It's money vs quality of life. As it happens, I don't drink, but truly, that is not the issue with me or with anyone else that I know of. We don't wish to impose our beliefs on anyone. We just don't want our little town turned into something we won't like.

The proponents are saying that we're losing about $2 million in tax dollars annually. Will someone please check my math here? This is how I figure it: Since we would only get to keep one cent on the dollar spent, and the population of Irving is approximately 200,000 (give or take a couple of thousand), I'm figuring that every man, woman and child in Irving would have to spend $1000 on liquor each year in order to gain $2 million in taxes for the city. Somehow, it just doesn't seem worth it. --Romeena

I loved the TAGS bowling ep, one of my favorite color episodes. I actually bowled a 300 game once when I was a senior in high school. It was a total fluke though; my usual average had been around 160. But, as I say, I don't bowl anymore. Spot, Hazel, Boo- I recall that bowling episode quite fondly. I really didn't care for the color episodes as much as the b/w ones. Early TAGS is just the Gold Standard that's all there is to it. Barney and Andy sitting in the sheriff's office jawing, it doesn't get any better. About the color episodes I really enjoyed Howard, the show he got the big fish really stands out. October 22, 2008 - Msg 67209: Awwwww Possum. I'm sorry things are not going well. You sure have my prayers, along with KY-Girl and any others who may need them. And don't quit trying to do the right thing. You'll be blessed for it.

Auh2o, a means testing for voter eligibility. I could not agree more. You get an "A" in thinking.

I'm in the same deal as Hazel. I don't have scoliosis like her, but I definetly have the misery in my back and if I tried bowling I'd be a mess. Funny though, I can stii golf some. That suprizes me cause they say golfing is really hard on your back. Go figure.

HM, No meatballs for the trick or treaters this year? What's happened to you? You use to love dropping them in the bags of candy and watching the bottem of the bag rip out. Yer gettin mellow in yer old age. :) A lot like New Neighbor. Boy, the stories I could tell you about her. Sheesh. Enough to make a growed man blush.

Oh and Auh2o, that big old silver carp was named Old Sam.

Asa

October 22, 2008 - Msg 67210: Hmmm...really, ASA? Tell us about New Neighbor...see if we blush. Good to hear from you. Hope things are going ok with Mrs. Asa.

Possum, so sorry you are having difficulties with family. That can be so upsetting, but you are right to turn it over to the Lord because he can change things when we can't (it takes time, though).

Thanks Auh2o, I still don't remember the bowling ep. I will have to watch for it since they are playing the color eps again on TVland. Hard to imagine that you are getting snow when it is nearly 90 degrees here this week! It's supposed to cool off a bit tomorrow with highs in the 80's, haha (no kidding). The wind will be from the North and drier.

Hey there CD, thank you for your many prayers for your porch family. You are such a sweetheart.

I take Erin to the dermatologist today to have that mole removed that I was concerned about (on her scalp). Please remember her in your prayers this morning.

Love to All,
Boo

October 22, 2008 - Msg 67211: Good morning everyone. Another sunny and chilly day. Wind is kicking up, blowing all the leaves around, and it’s really feeling like fall. Guess I’ll commence raking this weekend.

Prayers going up for POSSUM and Erin this morning.

AUH2O: Me talk good too. Remember that SNL skit back from the early 90s where Tarzan, Frankenstein, and Tonto were on the game show? The host couldn’t understand them. Too funny.

ASA: Glad you stopped by. I was considering sending out an APB.

Looks like you get my APB this morning, AFD!

ROMEENA: Maybe they are not only counting on the tax on the sale of the liquor, but also the business taxes the stores would pay. Either way, quality of life is priceless to my mind. For me, the litmus test when voting would be, would I want this next door to my house? All I can say is with you out there holding a sign, I wouldn’t want to croiss your picket line ;).

BOO: There are several color eps I really enjoy, and the bowling one is one of them.

MDC: I enjoy bowling, though I’m not much good. When we bowl (which is very rare) the Mrs. usually beats me. She played on a league in her younger days. In fact, she has one her old balls rolling around our shed somewhere. We’ve taken the kids to bowl a few times and they have enjoyed it, too. I like ten pins much better than duckpins. Of course, ducks are better with the kids. I remember as a kid watching a show called “Bowling for Dollars” on tv. Back in the 60s and 70s, bowling was taken very seriously in the Baltimore area and it was even covered on the sports news.

Well, another day, another 52 cents (after taxes).

In my 265 game, I got seven strikes, then i got nervous, then, if it's possible, my 16 pound ball was shaking in my hand!! ha Shades of Howard!
My wife and i still bowl today for fun!
Also Miniature golf! Any mini-golfers?
Possum--You on Howard's island!? If you start tearing paper into strips, let us know for sure! ha
Prayers.
Less than two weeks to go.. I better google "Electoral College" again and see how to get a degree from there. ha When i was a youngster, I actually thought there were guys voting at a college somewhere! Pray hard! I truly believe that God's hand was showing in Ohio and Florida in the recent past.

On Goober Beasley, I don't see too many contradictions on TAGS, so I love it when I find one.

My 16 year old daughter found a calender change from the 15th in one scene to the 16th just seconds later. It's the episode where Barney is too short and too thin to be a deputy. It's at the beginning of the episode where they are throwing a "5" year anniversary party for Barn.

HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERYONE.

You'll find one with Mr. O and a bullhorn, campaigning for his cousin to win the presidency of Kenya. He didn't win, and a bloodbath ensued, with churches burned, etc. Makes ya thank! Football season is winding down, only 2 more games to go. It has not been a winning season for them. It is our last season since Patrick graduates in May.

Breakfast menu will be: french toast with assorted toppings, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, sausage, fruit, coffee, tea, orange juice to drink.

Thanks for sending the pictures back and for the kind words Romeena. I appreciate you!

Better get my day going. Prayers and blessings to all.

October 23, 2008 - Msg 67234: Well, Ant D, where have you been Girl? Good to hear from you...your porch family has been missin' you (and you, too Maude). Glad to see you both.

Busy day, as usual and must be for many of us. The porch has been sort of empty. The weather is very nice today (highs in the 70's). The cool front blew in last night around 10 and practically blew up a dust storm from the parking lot of the bar across the street, haha! Nice neighborhood we are in here.

Better get moving...be back later.

October 23, 2008 - Msg 67237: Good mornin', porch! I just heard from my daughter with a report on my grandson's knee. I can't remember if I told you, but he hurt his knee last week in a football game. He's playing as a sophomore, on the first string, and doing very well. Now this. The MRI said he damaged the ACL, tore up a lot of cartilage and tore the meniscus. So, it's surgery for him, and he's out for the season, if not for good. I really hate this. He's 15, and the sweetest thing you ever saw. Big old tender heart, loves his family and his new little brother, and his old grandma too. I just hate that this had to happen to him, because he was so excited about playing. I just keep telling myself that maybe it was God's way of keeping him out of a worse injury later on.

Well, I just got home from work, am a pooped pup, and am heading for bed. Much to Starr's disgust, I'm sure, but she'll get over it, at least until she realizes I'm going back to work again tonight! Poor puppy!

Be blessed, everyone! --Romeena

October 23, 2008 - Msg 67239: Oh, and Homemaker, please tell Casey I'll be praying for him. October 23, 2008 - Msg 67244: Hey Boo - we are starting with the septic and the foundation next week - hope to be in by Thanksgiving. Of course, our's is a modular but it's a new house with 1900 square feet (I live in 1300 right now and we are on top of each other). I'll send pictures once it's on the foundation. Yee has!

Thanks for the prayers - I don't know if told you this or not but when Casey was little, we went through many tests to find out if he had cystic fibrosis. He was poked and prodded and had so many medicines in him - the good thing, no it wasn't CF but he still isn't crazy about doctors.

October 23, 2008 - Msg 67250: Hey Ro - sorry to hear about your grandson. He'll be good as new after the surgery. My husband had his FIFTH knee surgery earlier this year. All of his damage was from playing on the USAF travelling soccer team for three years back in his younger days. He has no ACLs in either knee now, tore his miniscus, and the list goes on. He is now recuperating from rotator cuff/major shoulder tendon surgery from last week. Before long, I'll have me a Bionic Man. All of this to say, your grandson will be fine and he'll be able to get back to sports. My daughter cheered this year and just from cheering she developed stress fractures in her back and tore her Plica band in her knee and had to have it operated on. She was up walking that night (without crutches). She's 13. Our younger ones have that kind of miraculous healing ability, unlike us old folks like me.

And HM - prayers for Casey. The hardest part of that hole ingrown toenail removal is the freezing spray they put on your toe to deaden it so they can remove the toenail. Yuck!

OK, I have a question about Aunt Bea. I was watching the ep. from the other night when she and the congressman (retired) were out on the town and he told Andy he wanted to continue seeing his Aunt Bea. Did Aunt Bea ever marry in the Andy show? If not, did she continue on in the Andy show until the final season? Or whatever happened to Aunt Bea?

Ant D

October 23, 2008 - Msg 67251: Hey HM, how cool that we will both be in our new homes soon! Can't wait to see pictures...Not exactly sure when we do our septic and foundation but should be soon. It's great that you will be in your house by the Christmas season.. Today I was thinking that I don't have a house to decorate yet, but I sure as heck have a gate and some fence post so I will be putting red ribbons on those!

Yes, MDC, I do have a bar across the street, diagonally. The big parking lot is really across the street and the bar farther back but we still see some interesting action over there. It's one of those Karoake/biker bars (strange picture). Like, I said, interesting neighborhood. There is another bar 2 blocks down the street and a tattoo parlor...(this is a Navy town).

Boo
