The only drawback is that it's hard to attend morning church services; I usually attend evening services.

I'll leave a note here on the porch swing for Big Maude and Tom. To both of you - I got your pictures and will get them scanned in and posted, tomorrow I hope. It just takes a few minutes, but I would have to turn on the light in this room, and I don't usually do that. I'm sitting in front of an 8-ft wide window, and with the light on, it's like being in a fishbowl. I'm facing the fenced back yard, and I have all sorts of security lighting out there, but still....so, tomorrow it is.

Eloise and I went over to my brother and SIL's house today (at SIL's request) and dug up about a zillion surprise lilies (Lycoris radiata). She had planted a few at one time and they've multiplied, were coming up out in her yard and everywhere! She wanted them thinned, so we did it. We brought home five - count 'em, five - plastic grocery bags of bulbs! And you can't even tell we were there! We could have brought home twice that many and still left her more than she wants. I already have a few growing around here, and had just ordered some more on eBay, when she called and asked if I'd come thin hers and take the excess. Well, yes! The ones I ordered on eBay were pink or yellow, though, and the ones she had were all red, so that's okay. On Monday, I'll be planting surprise lilies! Will mail some to my girls too, if they want them. Pretty things.

CD, I just have to say - I'm so glad you joined us here on the porch. You have fit right in, like you had been here forever, and I really thank God for you. You're a delight.

Boo, the choices you're making just sound wonderful! I love the idea of the river rocks in the shower. I'd never have thought of that, but what a great idea. Are you going to use the same tile on the bathroom floor and the shower and tub surrounds as well? That's what my son puts in the homes he builds in Florida. He uses large tile, at least 12" and usually 15", and just runs it right into the shower, or on the tub surround and it's so pretty.

Hey, Spotty Dog! No, I'm not working again until Monday night, and then again on Friday night. Just two nights a week, but it's amazing how often they roll around! And how many TVs can you watch at one time, anyway??

Yes, Ro (about the tile), that is exactly what we are planning..the large tile, probably 18x18...floor, shower and tub surround. I may use the 12x12 in the shower, though, with the pebble border and pebble floor. I can't wait until everything is finished and I can send you some pictures. Speaking of which, I need to send you some new pics. I took a cute picture of Gizzy in his new fall sweater today.

CD, you are right about Romeena. She has become such a trusted and loved friend to all of us. I think Ro is the porchster that more of us have met in person than any other. I spent a day with her once, REV gets to see her now and then and another porch sitter that we seldom see named Daphne...did I miss anyone? She and I got to meet several years ago in a little town called Fredricksburg, where her daughters live, during an annual Chritmas festival. I got to meet her daughters, her beloved Sugarplum and some of her grandsons and even hear one of her daughters sing. We even got a chance to sip some tea on her daughter's front porch. It was a wonderful Mayberry-like day. Romeena is a treasure and I have learned much from her. There is no way she could know what her friendship mean to all of us. I think she is kind of the "Dear Abby" of the porch. We tend to ask her advice alot (poor thing).

Well, guess I had better finish up the coffee and think about getting ready for preachin'..

Well the expected snow storm never got to us last night. You must have kept it all for yourself Hazel. And that's fine and dandy with me. It's colder yhan a well diggers rear here. October 12, 2008 - Msg 66908: OK CD and Possum. Come get some snow. Holy cow, no longer did I end my earlier post about no snow and it started and started hard. We have almost a foot of a wet heavy snow outside and it's creating havoc. The biggest problem is that none of our tree's have dropped there leaves yet, and now that wet heavy snow is causing them to break off a lot of limbs. I've been outside beating my tree's to get the snow to fall off, and getting dumped on while doing it. Brother! We get lake affect snow here in the winter, but never had it this early. It's a mess, and still snowing as I post.

October 12, 2008 - Msg 66909: Good afternoon, all. You folks are making me blush with your kind words. I guess age has its rewards.

CD, about those elephant ear bulbs -- here in the Dallas area we don't have to dig them. The first light freeze usually knocks the big old leaves and stalks down, all mushy and yucky. I leave it, because I think the bulbs will still draw some nutrients back out of the felled growth, but if it starts to look nasty or get moldy, I rake it off. Then I just pile some mulch or plain old leaves over the bulbs and leave them. Sure enough, in the spring, here it all comes again. Now, how they'll survive in your neck of the woods, I can't say. If you're in about the same horticultural zone as Dallas, you should be fine. Check out this site: http://www.growit.com/zones/ Click on your state, and you'll see what zone you're in. I'm on the border between 7 and 8, so I know elephant ears are hardy to Zone 8, and the southern end of Zone 7. Hope that helps!

Snow, Asa? A foot of snow?? My word! If we got a foot of snow here, the whole city would shut down. Seriously! Schools would close, businesses would close, churches would probably cancel services, there wouldn't be much open but the hospitals, and they would be doing a land-office business in the ER. Sure would be fun, though.

Our pastor, as always, preached a very thought-provoking sermon this morning. Seems he just gets better every Sunday. This time, he really got wheels turning in my head. I won't post about it here, but I think I feel a blog coming on.

Right now, I need a nap! Gonna scoop up little Starr, go settle into my big old chair, and watch a little TV, maybe get a short nap, get up and put pictures in the album. October 12, 2008 - Msg 66910: Phew, a foot of snow? Wow. Ours lasted that one day and was melted before the day was over. We've got that same problem though, with the tree leaves. We barely started Fall, and most of the trees hadn't even changed color yet, much less dropped their leaves to the ground. To quote the cowardly lion: "Unusual weather we're havin', aint it?" (when it started snowing in the poppy field) Almost every year here we don't get our first frost until around Halloween, and I usually still have tomatoes turning red in the garden until that time. This year my garden is already all dead.
Oh, Mr. Hazel and I went and looked at dogs today at the pound. We might have one by the end of the week! It's been over 2 years since our border collie Molly died, and we're just now making plans to get another dog. I hope it works out!

Thank you so much for the info, Romeena. I thought I would be okay leaving the bulbs outside for the winter. Our winters are usually mild; occasionally we see some low 30's for temps, but I figured you would have more experience with plants. I saw your yard, and it is just beautiful.
Hazel-it's nice that you are getting a dog from the pound;I'm glad there's an animal out there that's being saved from possible euthanization.

As for the dog, I HAVE ONE FOR YOU! Got home from work today and the kids were in the livingroom sitting all quiet. (should have known something was up!) and I walked by the door and saw this HORSE size dog sound asleep on the floor! It looks to be a mixed pointer/retrever. Pointer because it keeps pointing to the parakeets in the diningroom. I keep telling him "I know they're birds". He just showed up on my porch complete with collar (no tags) and walking leash. I called the vet and he's going to scan to see if he has a chip or recognize him. If not, we'll try to find the owner. But we do know he's not from our community. The kids rode around with him before I got home and no one had seen him before. A beautiful, well behaved dog.

It is deep dusk outside, just a little rosy glow in the sky, and there are three squirrels running around in the yard! What are they thinking?? They should be home in their jammies by now. I wonder if that signals anything?

CD, if your winters are that mild, your elephant ears should be just fine. I would still put some mulch or leaves over them, but I don't think you'll have any problems.

Well, I think I'll run up to Taco Bell and get some of those tacky (but good!) little tacos for dinner. There's a place in town that makes wonderful tacos, but it's a lot farther away, and I don't feel like wasting the gasoline.

Speaking of gasoline, we're now paying $3.19 for regular. REV, that may be of interest to you, since you're headed this way. I can't believe $3.19 looks good, but it does. Of course, I remember when gas was $0.19, back in the '50s and very early '60s. Of course, minimum wage was about $1.65 then, too. I guess it's all relative.

October 12, 2008 - Msg 66920: Speaking of squirrels, I'm mad at ours. Ok, I love wildlife and all that; I have a squirrel feeder and love to watch them. But I draw the line when they start destroying my stuff. You all know I'm an avid gardener; well, the squirrels stay out of it. So we co-exist together there. Same goes with my flower beds. So imagine my surprise when I came home from work last Thursday, and went out to my patio. We have two wonderful, comfy swings out there, with a great view of my back yard and garden. Well one of them is now ruined. The seat part is all chewed up and the stuffing all scooped out. Nothing but thread-bare material left. I think perhaps they were getting their winter nests ready, and they needed some stuffing. We've lived at this house for almost 20 years, with patio furniture and swings always on the patio, and we've never had our stuff bothered by squirrels. Irritating! But, not much can be done. We stacked stuff up on the other swing, so they wouldn't get to that one too. And I laid an old pillow out there so maybe if they need more stuffing they'll use that instead... What is it Barney says? "The ways of the creatures of the wild are many and wonderful."

But of course they ignored their food and chewed up all of my bird feeders while eating up all of the bird seed. The only solution is to spend 40.00 for a squirrel-proof bird feeder. They're cute, but destructive.
Yes, Spot, I am working on a quilt; slow-going, though. Between family obligations and work, it may be this time next year before I finish it. It is the "Grandmother's Fan" pattern.

October 12, 2008 - Msg 66923: SPOT, we met with an electrician today named Joe and I just loved the guy. He is in his 50's and his dear wife passed away less than a year ago. He is just a super nice guy and will be telling us what he will charge for the job tomorrow. I really hope we can use him. I thought of Romeena when he was talking because he said some really interesting things about Obama and I know Ro would love to have a conversation with him. He seemed to really know what was going on and have some good insight...of course political awareness is no prerequisite for the job, but "what the heck?".

A foot of snow?!! Jeepers, that's hard to imagine. Maybe this IS going to be a hard winter...of course, it never is down here on the Texas coast...it might mean a frost or two for us. I am thinking, though, that if the squirrels are tearing the stuffing out of Hazel's patio furniture to make warmer nests, we all might be in trouble!

Hey Possum, we have only had one white christmas here in recorded history and it was 4 years ago. Five to seven inches on Christmas Eve...people thought the world was coming to an end. It had never snowed like that, and certainly never a white christmas.

Hope you find the dog's owner, NN. That was a funny mental picture I had of the dog pointing at the parakeets. When I was a kid, we had parakeet that would copy alot of sounds he heard and mom had a big Airdale dog named Heidi. The crazy bird learned to call the dog by listening to us and would start yelling and whistling for Heidi. Well, Heidi would hear the bird calling and come and present herself before the cage, staring at the bird like, 'Well, here I am. What do you want?'. It always scared the bird to death and he never figured out what was causing the big hairy dog to appear.

You making a quilt, CD? That's wonderful...send a picture of it (and yourself) to Ro for the photo album..I would love to be able to quilt but I am a real mess when it comes to sewing anything. I do crochet a little when i have the time, though and am working on a blaket with fall colors right now.

We have a maple tree off our front porch that I swear waits for me before it dumps snow on me. I've seen trees do horrible things before. I can remember a documentary (can't recall the name) where trees actually hurled fruit, apples I think, at a lion and a small girl.

Sure wish I could drive up to Irving on Thursday to hear REV. My mom-in-law will be in San Antonio this week and Bruce goes back to work tomorrow so I can't swing it. Maybe someday. I wanted to thank you all for your prayers for Bruce. He is doing much better. Still not back to normal (hehe) but better. These back injuries sometimes take months to heal.

Romeena, I would check out the Brit-coms but don't even know where to look. I don't think we get any on our cable network. What would I look under to see a clip of one on YouTube? Would brit-com do it?

80 degrees, Auh2o? Curious...are the squirrels in your area resorting to any strange behavior like Hazel's? October 13, 2008 - Msg 66932: Good Morning Porch family, hope all is well this Columbus Day. I am working today and have a pretty full schedule. Hopefully, the day will go smoothly.

My kids are in school today but out 1/2 DAY tomorrow for parent teacher conferences. Thanks for the kind words about their pics in the album. They are pretty good kids. I can't believe Patrick will turn 18 in December! and Beth will be 15 in May. I must be getting old.

Supposed to be a beautiful day, around 82 degrees. Gas has come down around here as well. I saw a couple of places that has reg. unleaded for 2.98.

Glad Bruce is feeling better BOO.

Lunch menu will be: grilled ham and cheese sandwhiches, chips, pickles, SLAW. Chocolate chip cookies warm from the oven. tea, lemonade to drink. see you at lunch.

Morning Maude, you're NOT getting old. You are just in the prime of life. There has to be some comfort in knowing that you have gotten your kids this far (nearly grown) and they are doing well. I feel like I still have so far to go with a 7 year old!

Just finished a biscuit with REAL butter and honey and it sure was good. Biscuits aren't something we eat much of around here but they are a nice treat now and then.

Well, think I will go observe the "laundry conditions" before Bruce wakes up and wants to drag me to another tile place or something. Do any of you have an ideas about what we can do to our front porch? Now, knowing that the house has the farmhouse (or older home) look, with a big front porch, columns and railing, but the porch will be concrete. That just doesn't work...don't know whether to put wood on top of it, or go with some sort of brick pavers, or slate...we are considering having someone who does decorative concrete stamp it with something that looks like wood planking. Any ideas out there? The foundation under the porch will be covered by reddish brick, like you see in some of the older colonial-type homes. Funny how many little problems you come across when you are trying to figure these things out. The other day Bruce told me, "I don't understand why you don't like making these decisions. I thought women enjoyed these kinds of things". I told him, "Well, I was alot more enthusiastic five years ago when we first decided to build this house!". I am so overwhelmed that I am not finding it a "fun" thing...guess that might get better as i see the house actually going up. They are building some dang big houses in our area. There is a beautiful, victorian style going up down the street and it looks like it is about 4000 sq ft! The economy doesn't seem to be slowing down too much down here yet.

October 13, 2008 - Msg 66936: CD - the goat shows I go to are Boer Goat shows. Boer is a breed so it is divided into four categories: youth showmanship, percentage boer does (girl goats that are not 100% boer), fullblood boer does, and then the bucks (boy boers). Then within each category are age ranges from just born up to 6 years plus. All of the goats have to be papered or registered just like dogs. Then you earn points if your doe or buck wins overall in their %, fullblood or buck division. My older son, Casey, won the Jr. Showmanship. He has been around goats since he was 2 years old. He started showing at 5. Jesse started showing at 4.

I recently earned my goat judging certification so I can go and find the good goats to buy for my herd. Ha Ha

It’s one of those days where the pile on my desk is so high, and the amount of things I need to get done is so large…that I’m just going to ignore them.

HM: You judge goats, huh? There’s a few around here (work) that I bet are championship material.

Has anyone seen the tv-movie “The Five People You Meet in Heaven?” I watched it on Saturday. It starred John Voight, Jeff Daniels, Ellen Burstyn and some others. It really was a very nice flick. Basically, an old man (Voight) dies trying to save a little girl at an amusement park where he has worked as a maintenance man for many years. In his job he has diligently kept the rides running safe. He meets five people after he dies, who help him to realize how connected we all are. He believes he didn’t contribute anything important in life in his “dead-end” job and that life is random. They show him that all things happen for a reason. (SPOILER ALERT! I’m about to reveal the ending! Skip to the next paragraph if you don’t want to read it.) One particularly poignant encounter is with his “fifth person,” who is a little Asian girl about age eight. He can’t figure out how she fits in his life. She speaks only broken English and keeps telling him “You burn me.” He realizes in horror that he burned this girl during an incident when he was fighting ion the Pacific in World War II. When it happened, he saw a shadow of a girl, but then put it out his mind all these years. Of course, he didn’t not intend to harm an innocent—it was one of those tragic things that happens in war. Anyway, after he realizes he breaks down crying and keeps apologizing. He asks why such a thing would happen and she says because it was supposed to. He can’t understand, and again talks about living an unimportant life. She tells him that he was making up for her all those years, even not realizing it. Then, he’s back at the park surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of people—people that he had kept safe all those years through his work.

Though theologically speaking it’s gobbledy-gook, it was a really touching story showing our lives really are connected, and that terrible things do happen and even though we don’t understand the hows and whys now eventually we’ll see the “big picture.” I highly recommend the flick, which evidently is made from a book.

I also saw a terrible Disney movie on Sunday. Nora loves Hayley Mills movies and has seen (many times) most of them. I purchased one I had never heard of called “In Search of the Castaways” with Maurice Chevalier. The plot was ridiculous, the effects laughable, and the overall movie stupid. If (and I repeat, if) “That Darned Cat” and “The Parent Trap” were 10s, this would have been a -1. Now I know why I never heard of it. The Mrs. and I rolled our eyes to each other so much you’d have thought we were having seizures. The kids liked it though. And I’d rather they watch this kind of stuff than “Hannah Montana.” Chad was disappointed there were no pirates (he loves pirates), so I thought maybe I’d get him the original “Treasure Island” for Christmas.

October 13, 2008 - Msg 66944: Good afternoon, everyone! Me-They, I read that book, one rainy day when the power was out. That's my default activity when the power goes out around here. The sunroom is all windows on two sides, so gets plenty of natural light. There's a comfortable recliner out there, room for Starr up there with me, and a table for my tea glass, so I'm all set. I do a lot of reading out there.

Joe and his helper were here most of the day. Roses are all pruned, surprise lily bulbs planted, grass seed sowed in the lawn so it will be green all winter, everything else all settled and put to bed for the time being. Still have to move the plumeria tree into the garage, but not yet. It can stay out a few more weeks. Sure looks good out there!

I'm scheduled to work tonight. If they call and offer me the shift off, you better believe I'll take it! I'm beat to the socks, and not really looking forward to working all night. Then I've got a dental appointment at 8:30 in the morning, so can't come home and go to bed. Argh. Oh well, this too shall pass.

Boo, the concrete imprinted to look like wood sounds interesting. I think I'd ask the person who would do it to take me by some jobs they've done, just to get an idea of what it looks like. I've seen some concrete "faux" work, and it can be really nice. Haven't seen wood plank design though.

Well, time to hit the shower and scrape some of the yard off of me. My hair is stiff with sweat and sticking straight up, and a goat would not want to stand downwind, so guess I'd best clean up. Be blessed, everyone - and please pray for this election. --Romeena
