September 06, 2008 - Msg 65938: Glad your safe and sound Possum.

Boy, I was just reading something that has got my jaw muscle working. Has anyone heard about the huge number of American flags that went un-used at the Democratic convention and then put in garbage bags to be thrown out? Unreal. A janitor or someone found them and pulled them out of the garbage. Now the GOP leaders have them and are going to put them on display at a McCain Palin rally today in Colorado. I know to many these are just pieces of cloth that don't mean much, but for many others the Flag represents a bunch, and for me at least clearly illustrates where the leaders of the Democrat party's heads are at!
Arghhhhhhhh!

Asa

September 06, 2008 - Msg 65939: I'm so tense I better sweep and work off this anger.

Asa

September 06, 2008 - Msg 65940: Good morning, everybody! Or should I say good afternoon? Asa, if that story is true, it should be broadcast, televised and printed until the Dems gag on it. OK, so they had more flags than they had people to wave them. Fine. Get some junior-grade Young Democrat to take them over to the local VFW hall. Drop some off at schools or the National Guard Armory. Give them to some churches, to be used in their next patriotic service. Give them to some neighborhood organizations so they can be placed along roadways and sidewalks on July 4th. Get creative and use them - but put them in the trash? Never. Never! Shame, shame on whoever allowed that to happen. I'm not going to point at the Democrats and say, "See how they are?", because in truth, I know it could happen anywhere, Democrat or Republican. OK, 'nuff said here. I think I feel a blog coming on.

That dratted fishpond and I are going to get a divorce, if the algae doesn't slow down soon. I cleaned that filter out Thursday morning, and when I got up this morning - 48 hours later - no water was flowing in the fountain and the filter box was floating at the surface. Argh. Nothing to do but go out there, turn the pump off, pull the filter box off the line, take it apart and lay the two squares of filter medium out on a boulder and wash the thick green sludge off of them. Put the whole thing back together, sink the filter box again, drag the hose to the fountain outlet and force a strong stream through to back-flush the air out of the lines, then turn the pump back on. Hallelujah. The fountain is flowing once again and the little fish are happy, until Monday morning when it will all be to do over again. I treated the water in three layers - an algaecide to kill any floating algae that doesn't get "got" by the UV light, a flocculant to clump the dead and dying algae together and sink it, and an enzyme to clean up the sludge that results. This will not solve the problem, it will only keep it in check so the water doesn't turn thick and green. The water looks good, actually, but only because I'm willing to do this little routine every other day. How the fish survive all those additives, I don't know, but they don't seem to be bothered. They're fat and healthy and producing little fishes by the numbers. I'll be giving some to Joe before long, I guess.

Well, time for some lunch. Anybody got any good leftovers? I don't, I ate them all. Guess I'll have to cook again pretty soon. Maybe just a can of soup for right now, though.

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

September 06, 2008 - Msg 65941: I heard that about the flags just a little while ago on Fox news,Asa. Shameful, isn't it?
Where is everybody today? Hey Ro- since Asa was kind enough to sweep up around here, why don't we take him out tonight? Maybe head over to Mt.Pilot and catch a Glenn Ford movie? Asa,go slick down and we'll be by for you later!

So the flag story is true, for sure? Shame, shame, shame! That's a biggie, friends.

Would you believe that I had to clean that pond filter out again? About three hours after I cleaned it before? I guess the stuff I put in the water was working, especially the flocculant, which pulls the free algae together into small clumps. In that form, it would fill up the filter medium very quickly, I know, but in three hours??? That dadburn pond is wearing me out. If it wasn't so pretty, I'd fill it in!

Possum, speaking of Glenn Ford, I saw a movie with him and Peter Fonda called, "The Rounders", made on '63. Funny movie! It also had some folks from Mayberry in it like Mr. Darlin and Nurse Mary. Probably more that I didn't notice. I laughed alot at the movie, which had a hilarious and unruly horse in it that they just called "that old roan". There is a scene in which Glenn Ford is trying to break the old roan and keeps getting bucked off. Then old roan breaks through the fence and runs off to a nearby pond. Glenn goes after him and ropes him from the opposite side of the pond. Well, of course old roan pulls Glenn through the pond, the mud and proceeds to run and drag him for who knows how long. When he finally gets old roan back to the corral area, he tells Fonda, "Give me the keys to the truck.".."Why?", asks Fonda. "He tried to kill me, now I'm gonna kill him. Keep him there and I am going to back up the truck and then hit him at full speed. There's more than one way to break a horse!". It was such a funny scene, and the horse continues to give Glenn grief throughout the whole movie. Anyone besides me ever seen it?

Well, the kids want me to watch a movie with them before bed...

I will have to send Ro a recent picture because she has changed so much over the summer. Even her hair is now straighter and more of a light brown, rather than blond and wavy. I think her feet have doubled in length and she is starting to get that "girl" build already. Sometimes it scares me! When I was a kid, I was a late bloomer in that department but I can already tell that she won't be like me. Of course, it seems like little ones grow up much faster these days (they say its the hormones in the milk and meat or something?!). ha

September 08, 2008 - Msg 65996: Oh, forgot to mention to those of you who "share my affinity for Christmas culture"....I ordered some groovy DVDs from Amazon yesterday of some older movies that I used to watch as a kid, like "The House Without a Christmas Tree" and the sequel to it is a Thanksgiving movie called "Holiday Treasure", both were starred Jason Robard and were made in the early 70's. Really good! I also found a DVD of one of my favorite movies called "One Magic Christmas"..its the one with Mary Steenburgen, who plays kind of a modern day scrooge and is visited by an angel named Gideon. Anyone know that one? I just love it. I also came across a DVD that is scenes of falling snow with background Christmas music, and another with different Christmas scenes (I like that corny kinda stuff). Can you tell I am already gearing up for the holidays...hey, it's only 90 degrees outside!

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66004: Good morning, everyone! My, isn't the porch nice and clean? Makes it a pleasure to sit and visit for a while.

Tom, we'll be praying for the little neighbor boy. Years ago, my cousin's little daughter had to have surgery to repair a hole in her heart - sounds like maybe the same problem. I know what you mean about him being on the go all the time. My cousin's little girl was too - in fact, when the surgeon said she would have a lot more energy after the surgery, my cousin replied that she wasn't so sure she wanted her "fixed" after all! Kids are amazing. When my oldest son was six, he had surgery to correct a malformation of the bones of his chest. We were so scared, and expected him to be just pitiful for weeks. Nope. The NEXT DAY he was up and riding a tricycle in the halls of the children's hospital. Kids bounce back like rubber balls.

Boo, I'd like to know more about that DVD of the falling snow and background Christmas music. I'm hosting a Christmas party in December for the nurses in my unit at work, and I think it would be nice to have something like that playing on the TV, just to set the mood. Amazon, huh? Guess I'll have to visit them.

Well, better get started. I'm hoping to move about a bushel of the junk off my desk today, but I think I'll go watch "Leave it to Beaver" first. (heehee) Be blessed, all. --Romeena

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66009: Thank you, MDC. Will be thinking of you on Sept. 11th.

Asa, I am not even gonna comment on that dream...whoa. Ever hear of Freud?

Ro, just do a search on Amazon for Christmas or snow DVD. There are a few of them and it was hard for me to choose. I ended up getting two of them. One with falling snow and one with all types of Christmas scenes. There was another one with snow scenes that I was very tempted to get but I read in the comments that it was not much actual snow falling, but still shots, too. Sure looked beautiful, though.

Possum, the "Holiday Treasure" movie was made after "House Without..", and is about Addie making friends with a town hermit, or something like that, I think. I have not seen it since I was about 12, so there you go. I do remember liking it and it is not always easy to find and is more costly. I think the cheapest one I found was 27.00. Good luck!

Boo

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66010: Oh, my the way, Possum, they also made another sequel about Easter. I think it was called Easter Promise. It should pop up if you search for the other one. I have a copy of it somewhere, and it is ok, but not as good as the other two.

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66014: Hey, Boo. I did search the Amazon site and ran into the same comments you did. Which DVD did you end up with? I don't want the still shots with superimposed snow. I'm thinking I may go roam through one of the movie stores in town and see if I can find something. I really like the idea of having something like that playing during Christmas gatherings. Beats having some blaring TV show on, and if you don't already have something playing, someone is sure to turn the TV on to some car-crashing movie or something. Argh.

Well, I'm supposed to work tonight, so guess I'll go try to sneak a nap in before I go. Sure makes the night go better when I can do that. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66016: Hey Boo,I went to Amazon but didn't buy it(Holiday Treasure) because it WAS rather pricey,as you said. The prices for it on VHS were what you'd expect to pay for a DVD (which they didn't have). I saw the Easter one too. I'll keep checking back because sometimes the prices do go down. Know what I ordered instead? A copy of "The Homecoming"- the Walton's Christmas movie.I recorded it from TV back in the early 80's and my copy has about worn out! Oh,and I got Laci's Kidsongs circus thingy too.
MDC, my heart goes out to you and I'll be thinking about you (among other things) on 9/11.

Y'all are welcome to join me for supper. It's meatloaf! Bet I know one Porchster who'll show up! Ha Ha

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66018: Ro, I ended up ordering "A Christmas Snowfall"...it is the one that someone described as kind of "gray" but is actual falling snow and not still shots. I thought it looked pretty authentic. I, for one, like the cloudy look when it's snowing. It's more authentic. Hope I like it, anyway.

Yes Possum, "Holiday Treasure" is pricey. I have been watching for it on Ebay for over a year, hoping to get it cheaper and never saw it. I decided to give in and get it from Amazon. I saw that "Homecoming" CD and almost bought it, too, but I thought I had better stop with the purchases for now. I have an old copy of Homecoming on VHS that might still work, don't know for sure.

Have to go help Sean with his homework...

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66019: Hey Ro, I did a search for the DVD I ordered and came across the website that created it and the other one I was interested in and there was a sample clip of both. Just go to www . gronoproductions . com Each clip is a few minutes long and you can see the difference in the filming and the music. The one I ordered with the falling snow is a bit annoying to watch for long. It feels like the snow is flying at your eyes or something...check it out and see what you think.

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66020: Howdy, all. On my way to work, just wanted to drop in. MDC, that's a good idea about pulling the plug on the TV, but I can't get to the plug. The TV is a 51", sitting on top of a very large cabinet that houses all the electronics, and is extremely heavy. It's on rollers, but even so, on the carpet it pretty much takes a strong man to move it. There are floor speakers alongside, which have to be moved as well, so it's just not worth the trouble. Guess I could hide the remote!

Wow, Spot, Otis is a big boy! Good thing he's so good-natured. You may remember that my son had an English Mastiff that was 210 pounds, and he was just a sweetheart. He would back up to someone sitting on the sofa and sit his big old backside down on their lap, with his front feet still on the floor! Sweet as he could be, never threatened anyone in the family, but a stranger at the door was greeted by a deep, continuous growl until they either left or a family member brought them in, in which case all was fine. Door-to-door folks generally left pretty quickly.

Well, I'm off to work. Was hoping to get cancelled tonight, but they never called, so guess I'll get my monkey suit on and go. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

September 08, 2008 - Msg 66023: It's still hot here, too, MDC, but there is something different about the evenings and mornings..just slightly cooler. This evening after dinner, the kids and I took a walk and it was that time of evening about 30 minutes from dark, when the clouds are looking pink and blue, so pretty. We walked up to the little main street here and got a snow cone from a little family-owned place that just opened. We sat out front and ate our snow cones and waved at folks we knew. It was a real "small town moment". I told the kids some stories about what the town was like when I was growing up there. We also talked about Barney and how that girl bit the end of his snowcone off and sucked out the juice! (Barney has become one of Erin's favorite subjects, lately). What was neat about the snowcones was that they used that really syrupy syrup like we used to get when we were kids. It was like a little trip down memory lane as I ate a Strawberry one (always my choice as a child). It was a good little outing.

You know, Erin has a little friend at school named Paige, who shares her love of TAGS. Erin said that today after school, as they were waiting to be picked up, Paige said, "I can't wait to get out of this jail, go home and kick back and watch some Andy Griffith!". Erin said they were discussing their favorite episodes. I really find it amusing to think of my children loving TAGS.

Well, better hit the clean sheets (don't you just love sleeping on clean sheets after a warm shower?!)...We have Baby Emily to take care of tomorrow...wish me luck!

Hope Ro has an easy night at work.

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66026: Key KY Girl, I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering where you were...hope you can stop by more often.

Mornin' Possum. I just finished watching that guy on the weather channel talking about IKE and I don't like IKE. I am really hoping I don't have to try and get my parents, kids, and the dogs out of here this week! Bruce has to stay no matter what (due to his job) and I would stay but it would really scare the kids, so its not an option for me. I sat through a category 5 storm once in my life and don't want to do it again, especially with kids. That was back in the early 70's before all of the technology we have today and it was not expected to be much of a storm but proved differently. The devastation was beyond description. Anyway, I will be keeping a close eye on IKE over the next couple of days. It is hard to know exactly when to evacuate because of the traffic. Sometimes people end up piled up on the interstate. Hope I don't have to deal with it!

Better get going...have to get Erin to school..

Boo

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66027: Hope that storm goes south of you Boo. The weather gal I was watching this morning was hinting it may miis the U.S. all together and hit Mexico instead. At least I think that's what she said. She's a looker and some mornings I find my eyes work better than my ears. :)

Sure, I'll buy breakfast. Have fun at therapy Possum and be careful.

Say hey to Courtney for me N.N.

Supposed to rain here tonight and tomorrow. That'll be nice. I suspect I'll be right out there in it.

Asa

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66028: Hey to ky girl! Long time no see, dear heart. I hope you can come around more often - we miss you.

Well, according to some newspaper articles up here in Dallas, a bunch of the folks that were evacuated from N'Awlins are griping now because the authorities "panicked" and "overreacted". Since Gustav didn't blow them off the map, they're mad because they got pulled out of their homes. Of course, had it been the other way around - no evacuation and the storm hit hard - they would have been crying about how they were neglected and overlooked again. Honestly, I've about had it with some of the crybabies of this world. Oh well.

Well, I'm home, I'm tired, and I'm going to eat a bite and hit the bed for a nice nap. It's cloudy, trying to rain, and it should be good sleepin' weather. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

P.S. Speaking of weather, I sure do miss Merri Weather. She was always such a bright spot on the porch, I really wish she'd come back. I've emailed her two or three times, I don't get them back, but she's never answered. Can't figure it!

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66029: Good morning everyone. It’s humid and rainy here today. They are calling for rain through this evening. Nothing like those poor people got or will be getting in Haiti and Cuba. That Ike looks like a nasty one. BOO, you keep an eye on the weather and stay safe.

TOM: Just what are you insinuating about my shorts? ;)

FLOYD: Thanks for the cleaning. Boy, do I like things all sparkly and clean.

Not sure where AUH2O is. Maybe RNC convention hangover?

All this talk of Christmas! And we just passed Labor Day! Well, even at our house the countdown has started with the kids. Chad just lurches from holiday to the next. I always look forward to Thanksgiving. Last year it as quite warm on Thanksgiving, but it really doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving unless it’s at least brisk outside.

BOO: Talk about weeds! Nora, who has always been rather tall for her age, is growing faster than we can keep her in clothes. I’m not sure just how tall she is now, but she’s off the charts. And thin as a rail. She’s wearing a size 5 shoe! At age 8! The misses only wears a little bigger than that. Of course, Nora is excited because she thinks another size or so and a whole new world of shoes (from mom’s closet) will open to her. She’s such a girly girl about that sort of stuff. But she still likes to dig worms and stuff like that, too. And she loves Andy Griffith. Recently, we decided that undershirts were in order with most tops, so I feel your pain. The Mrs. assures me that it is not so much the beginning of the end (if you know what I mean) (hey, I’m a dad) but perhaps the beginning of what sometimes is (for girls) an awkward, pudgier stage before the big growth spurt. Heck! If she grows any more, she’ll be taller than I am. I still think Nora, Erin, Kai, Kelsey, and the other girls here on the porch would have one heckuva good time.

Well, have to get to work. Please remember my office mate in your prayers this morning. She received word that her mom, who has been in hospice for about a year, passed away early this morning. He dad passed not quite two years ago.

MDC: You are in my prayers.

Talk to y’all at lunch.

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66030: Hey, ROMEENA. I miss MERRIWEATHER, too. Even if she didn't want to post, I wish we knew if everything was okay or not.

About New Orleans, it's one of those darned if you do, darned if you don't situations.

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66031: You can be sure I will watch that weather!!

You know, M-T. I am probably over-concerned but it seems to me that Erin is starting to pudge a little and I don't see how it's possible. She is an incredibly active kid and in constant motion. It doesn't seem that she overeats, really. I am watching her pretty close and making some diet modifications. She has a sweet tooth and needs some limits. I swear, I cannot go through worrying about her being overweight like Sean. It's just too much. I have decided that we will take walks most every evening for starters, and watch what we eat. Sean sees food as recreation so it won't be easy!

Better go..

Boo

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66032: I don't think you have anything to worry about, BOO. Not that I have much experience myself, but from discussions the Mrs. and I have had (and the various pictures I have seen of her as a young girl, tween, and in high school), Erin is probably going through the same things as Nora. Nora doesn't overeat, either, but has that same sweet tooth. I wouldn't worry.

Speaking of Nora's sweet tooth, boy does she have one. You have to place limits. Chad, on the other hand, can eat a few M&Ms or take a bit of candy bar and then wrap it back up and go on his merry way without any prompting. Nora will eat any flavor ice cream, any kind of cookie, or candy. Chad's choice of treats are more limited. He doesn't like cake icing, and his usual ice cream order when confronted by acse full of flavors and toppings: vanilla. Plain old vanilla.

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66034: Hello All. . .
I just wanted to comment about kids and eating. . .Casey is 11 (almost 12 come October) and he is 5'6" and has a size 15 shoe. Now that is a big boy. He doesn't really care for sweets or chips (likes fruit more than eanything, loves lowfat yogurt) but he still has a bit of a pudge. Part of that is normal baby fat. He has slimmed down a lot in the last year. Jess on the other hand has a manly size appetite and doesn't know when to say no on food. He is proud of his belly fat and hopes to be the next Santa Claus. We really have to watch him or he will just eat way too much. He doesn't care for vegetables nor does he really like fruit. He loves sweets and more sweets. I think he thinks that the two food groups are peanut butter and chocolate!

I can't believe you are all talking about Christmas videos! Why, I have already started my Christmas list for everyone! Ha Ha Ha

Well - I need to go. . .

Behave yourself!

homemaker

September 09, 2008 - Msg 66035: Well, Jess sounds alot like Sean, HM. His attitude about food is scary. With his high cholesterol, I feel like I have to do something. There was an article that came out in the paper here yesterday about the increase in liver problems in obese kids because there are more than the average in our area and lots of kids with type 2 diabetes. I would like to be able to just think it he will grow out of it when he gets some height, but I really think we have a problem here and I am not the best example. I am majorly overweight with high cholesterol so this is something we need to work on as a family. I'm afraid genetics also plays a part in this for my kids. It seems like everyone in my and Bruce's family is overweight to some degree (many morbidly obese). Something has to be done.

Well, it looks like IKE is still a real threat, so I may be going to Waco, depending on what things look like tomorrow.

I have to go get mom ready for her MRI...talk to you all later.
