August 22, 2008 - Msg 65461: Exactly, Romeena..it is the baby sleeping in the backseat in a car seat that is at risk. I read a story a couple of years ago about a man who forgot his infant sleeping in the backseat. It was usually mom who dropped the child off at daycare and on this day it was Dad. He completely forgot since it wasn't part of his routine. The child died and I'm sure the dad has never gotten over it. I can only imagine what something like that does to a family. I had a friend whose young son (age 2) developed a heart problem that required a heart transplant. She was married to a man who had 2 children from a previous marriage. When they went to Houston to talk to the experts about putting Taylor (the child) on the transplant list, the experts told them that they needed to think hard about their decision because it would affect their whole family and that most couples with children who have transplants, end up divorced. They chose, of course to go forward with the transplant, which required that my friend move to Houston to be near the transplant hospital and while the child was on all the required meds, he had to stay away from people because his immune system was compromised. They lived this way for many months and my friend's husband couldn't deal with it and left her for another woman. He wouldn't even support her financially. She went through it all alone (with God's help) and a church who cared and helped her, even providing financial support. The child had the transplant and did very well, but my friend told me once that if she had it to do over again, she might not make the same decision because of the devastating effect it had on her family. I think it just uncovered the kind of person her husband really was, but I wasn't in the position to judge, I guess. Hard to understand why a man would do that. He must have been very weak.

Homemaker, I was just at the grocery store and picked up a few packets of KoolAid. I bought the lemon and mixed it with water in an empty shampoo container. I will have her rinse her hair with it after she shampoos with the paul mitchell each time. THAT should keep those critters at bay. It is strange because the bugs that she has now are a totally different kind than she had the first time. These are bigger, and a reddish-brown color. The last ones were kind of transparent with black and gray. Really creepy! As I was combing her hair with the nit comb, I saw alot more dead lice than I thought she had, and yes, Romee, I have kept her away from her friend since I found that she had them. I am just glad I discovered this case before next week because I would have had to keep her out of school to treat them!

Speaking of Pink Floyd, MDC, have you seen the T-shirt with Floyd on the front? He is painted pink and the caption under the picture reads "Pink Floyd", of course. haha I saw it on Ebay.

August 22, 2008 - Msg 65464: Hey Ro, yeah, I could probably jet over there, if she wanted us to come back with no house to go home to. And trust me, I don't think she would be thinking about my gallantry if something like that happened.
It is all I can do now to keep us up to date with the mortgage payments, and already delaying some of the other bills each month, making them bigger. She already took out a loan to pay for some of this trip, so we also have to pay that back.
So that would be quite a big bullet to bite.
She has quite a short memory where my good deeds are concerned.

Sterling, you're right, of course. Going deeply into debt at this time wouldn't be the thing to do, especially since there's really nothing to be done over there. You can phone your wife and offer your support that way, as you've been doing. I know you'd like to go, but you're right to stay here. Like New Neighbor said, she'll be okay about it when she gets home and has time to think and reason with herself. Hang in there!

Little Starr is still favoring her left foreleg a bit. I can't tell if it's the foot or the leg that hurts, but she does lick at her foot a lot. I've checked it, can't see a thing wrong, and she doesn't object to my touching it. I can't figure it out, unless she hurt it jumping off the ottoman or something. I don't let her jump off the bed, but that's easy to control because she can't get up there by herself, so I'm always present when she's on it. Chairs and sofas, however, are another story, and good luck keeping her off them. I haven't taken her to the vet because it's much better than it was, but she still looks so pitiful when she stands and holds that one little paw up in the air. Naturally, she milks it for all it's worth!

Well, guess I'll go cuddle her for a while. Pitiful puppies get lots of cuddles. Blessings, everyone. --Romeena

So, I went on a search to find out who our anonymous poster/Keen Observer is. I found what I was looking for while searching the page source in the archives. So, Redcrested Lakeloon aka Red aka Keen Observer, if you are going to make nasty comments & even resort to name calling, & don't want to sign your name, that's fine, we know who you are now, go right ahead. I for one do NOT appreciate you coming on here saying the things you have said to Romeena, auh2o, Asa, Me-They, Sterling & others as you put it. Your words are totally un-called for!! So, you're out, sign or don't sign, but now at least these folks know the coward is that can run her mouth, but isn't woman enough to sign her name!!
Go to the April 10th archives, you'll find some of the first postings Red made from the same IP address the nasty posts are coming from now. I'm ready & waiting for me to be called something now, so as we say in TN~"Wear it out, Red!"

Auh2o, I am glad to hear what you have to say about Joe Biden because I don't know a thing about him other than he is a Democrat. I have been watching part of the Saddleback forum interviews on YouTube and there is certainly a big difference between Obama and McCain, in their views on moral issues. I also heard a very good talk show on my drive to Houston, about illegal immigration and learned some things I didn't know...talk about a mess! I didn't realize that there are no laws to make illegals legal. They told about a 17 yr old young man who has been in this country since he was 3 months old, only speaks English, and is just as "American" as anyone. Well, he was not able to get a driver's license and was pulled over while driving. He was arrested and sent back to Mexico, where he had no place to live, no relatives, etc. His only option would be to hop the border once he gets there. Even if he were able to apply for citizenship, the waiting list is so long it would take 20 years. So, in the meanwhile you have millions of illegals living and working in this country who have no way to become naturalized because they came in through illegal channels. There are many good, hard-working families in this group of folks and many came here as small children and are now adults. How can we just expect to send all of these folks back to Mexico (even if it were possible). It's quite a problem. The whole system needs to be reconstructed.

Boo, you're so right. The laws are all twisted, punitive in some areas, and largely ineffective. I'm not smart enough to have answers, but I can certainly see that some changes are needed. Tne young man you mentioned obviously merited some special consideration, though I have to say that if he didn't have a license, he shouldn't have been driving. He asked for trouble, and he got it. Inconvenient as it would be to refrain from driving, the law is clear. No license, don't drive. We recently had a little family wiped out here in the Metroplex because an unlicensed illegal immigrant ran a red light and T-boned their van. We also had another tragic wreck here, lives lost, when an unlicensed teenaged American citizen did pretty much the same thing. Citizen or illegal, it's the same law - no license, don't drive. Whether you're hit by an illegal immigrant or an American citizen, it doesn't matter - you can be just as dead either way.

There are two kinds of unlicensed drivers. Those who have never gotten a license - they're bad enough. No one has yet confirmed that they know how to drive and have any level of good judgment. The other kind, though, is the worst. That's the previously licensed driver who has had their license revoked. If they lost their license, there was a reason, for pete's sake! Speeding, driving drunk, reckless driving, whatever - in some way they obviously demonstrated that they weren't competent or responsible drivers. Yet they get back in their cars and drive without a license, and sadly, there's just not much done about it. I think a year or so in the pokey might be a good start. No license - don't drive. How hard is that to understand? Hmmm. I think I feel a blog coming on.

Well, guess I'll go put some vinegar on some nutgrass out back. That miserable stuff crops up like sin - just can't seem to get rid of it. That was last night's blog, by the way.

First things first, Sterling I'm sorry to hear of your Father-in-Law, prayers your way friend, & I do agree you need to be the voice of reason right now, even though it's hard to do.
Now to catch up on what I missed:
Asa that pet nail grinder you were asking about is nothing but a glorified Dremel tool. It does work, IF you get the dog used to having it's nails ground. I grind the nails on all my dogs, but most of them have been having it done since they were babies so they are used to it. With that said, they still don't sit still like those dogs do on the commercial! Wish they would. But if you want to get one to use, they do work, but you have to work at it as well, & get a Dremel instead, it's much cheaper & the replacement sanding bands are cheaper too.
Me-They your story about that vegetarian sushi just about made me spit my coffee all over the keyboard! I'm sorry you had to experience that, but as my Mother used to say, live & learn. Did you learn anything from that experience?? HA Also, you were talking about your pet peeves one of mine is driving by a gas station & seeing the # 8 upside down on the price board! Drives me crazy! I've been known to let them know about it when I pay for gas, not that it does any good.

Lucy you asked if my son was still living with us, yes he is & I'm way past ready for them (one of his friends moved here with him) to move out! Those boys are driving me crazy with their hours, both of them work & both of them work the closing shift! He never went to college, is supposed to be heading for the service this Nov. maybe that will make him mature some. Was I that bad at 20 years old?? My poor mother!
Spot you mean yer camping while the Bristol Night race is going on?? I wish I was there on the lake with you guys instead of here in Bristol with all these people! You asked what kind of vehicle folks were driving, I drive a 1999 Chevy Blazer that belonged to my mother, & surprisingly, it gets pretty good gas mileage for what it is. Mr Neff drives a 1991 Chevy S-10 4 wheel drive.
Tom I haven't forgotten about your gum wrappers, the store I normally get the gum from has cut back on what they are stocking now & I can't get as many at a time now.
Boo you were talking about that Christmas Park, sounds alot like Tweetsie Railroad in this area. Lots of neat things & like a big carnival set on the side of a mountain. Also, you were talking about ordering the ACE program for your homeschooling, that is a great program! I had forgotten about it, but when I was in high school that's what our school used. I loved it & the way it was set up, everyone could go at their own pace. My favorite was Biology, hated any of the math though. I think Sean will do well with it.
Now for the news around here. We are still working on getting the house, the hold up was with the finance guy, he didn't bother to tell us right after we got everything to him he was going to be off work for 2 weeks, so as of yesterday, things are rolling again. He is emailing a letter stating the funds are there so we can make an offer, hopefully that will be done first of the week. I don't know how much longer I can take this neighborhood before I start knocking the neighbors & their children in the heads! Just yesterday, I was in my shop grooming a dog & my dogs were really raising cain that the door, I went out to check & there were 3 kids next door, throwing apples at the motorhome, the house & the dogs in the yard. Course when they saw me they took off like scalded cats. I also have a door bell at my grooming shop door that's shaped like a dog paw & when you push the paw, it barks instead of rings, last night they were playing the ring the bell & run trick half the night. Needless to say when the barking doorbell starts, the dogs in the house take off for the door thinking someone is there, it finally stopped around 1am when I got the screwdriver out & took the paw down! Little Monsters these kids are! I'm not even going to get started on the skateboarding bunch on the other side of the house, my blood pressure is up enough today! Suffice it to say, I am MORE THAN READY to move!
Now that I've written a book for you today, I'm going to check my emails & think about cleaning the carpets here today.

As for the revoked licenses, you are right for the most part I for one have had my license revoked & it had nothing whatsoever to do with my driving abilities! Remember when Feather, my Bull Terrier, fell out of the car window in D.C. & was lost overnight & animal control found her? Well anyway, I went to get her out of "jail" (thankful that she was alive) paid the fines for her running loose (like it was intentional, right) & proceeded to explain to them, she was 4 months old & in my county in SW VA they don't vaccinate for Rabies until they are 6 months old, in Fairfax Co. where she was "locked up" they are vaccinated at 4 months. They wrote me a ticket for her not having her shot & told me if I had my vet fax over to them that it is not required where I lived until 6 months, (which he did) she would not proceed with it. Well, a full 2 years later, I got stopped in a road block & got a ticket for driving on a revoked license!! I was floored! Seems she sent the ticket through anyway & I didn't pay the fine, obviously because I didn't know about it, & they revoked my license! $200 later, I have my license back, but what I am trying to say is, sometimes it's not necessarily your driving abilities that are the problem.
Be warned, don't let yer dog get in trouble in VA! HA

August 23, 2008 - Msg 65487: I hear ya, Romeena. I get so frustrated with Nathan and Josh's mom (and with the law around here). Their mom lost her license for driving while intoxicated, which resulted in a night in jail and fine that she never paid. Well, she continued to drive anyway and was pulled over for speeding, found to be without a license again and the car was impounded and another fine imposed (which she will not pay, same as last time). She came up with the hundreds of dollars to get the car out and is driving again...just like nothing happened. I don't get it. Why would they allow a person like that to just walk away and get behind the wheel again. She still drinks and likely drives that way. I don't understand why she didn't just pay off the intitial fine and get her license back instead of taking the chance and driving with out it. Now one of her boys is about to get his driver's permit and she will be letting him drive with her in the car. What I am wondering is this; if he gets his permit (which states that he must drive only with a licensed driver), and he gets stopped by a cop who finds out that mom doesn't have a license, will the boy be penalized for it and lose his chance to get a license until he is 18? I fear that, once again, the boys will be the ones to suffer from their parent's irresponsibilty.

I'm waiting on the race to start, it won't be long now, I have been hearing the helicopter fly over for the past hour, giving traffic reports & such. Heard the fly over aircraft go over the house last night, not sure what they will have tonight, but I plan to be outside to see them when they do fly over. Anyways, gonna go play with the puppy outside for a while, he's been very good today while I've been cleaning, only barked at the vacuum cleaner a couple of times.

Unsettled weather will do that. I worked Wednesday night, and it was already building up. With any luck, things will settle a bit by Monday night. Now, about that white fawn!! Girl, what a gift you were given! I sure hope you can get some pictures for us. If you do, send them to me and I'll put them in the album for sure. What a wonderful thing to witness.

August 24, 2008 - Msg 65505: Ha! Asa, you are a caution! And Mavis, I'd like to thank you too, for suggesting a Dremel instead of that pricey claw grinder. I don't have one, but will get one. Even if Starr won't permit it, I'll have it to use for other things. The only advantage I can see to the Peticure thing is that it has a guard - you have to stick the claw through that little hole, which would prevent accidentally grinding the toe, but I think at least in Starr's case, with her tiny foot, I can hold her foot so that only the claw is sticking out. If I grind anything else, it will be my own fingers!

That cute little chameleon is outside my window again, climbing around in a shrub. I wouldn't have seen him, except he was moving twigs as he crawled along, and the movement caught my eye. I really had to look hard to see him, because right now he's exactly the color of the leaves. I just think that's amazing, the way they can change colors. God provides, doesn't He?

Well, I must finish wrapping grandson's birthday gifts, get the car loaded and go pick up the other grandparents. We try not to take two cars when we go out to my son's house. It's about thirty miles, and that's a lot of gasoline.

I think it might get a little tougher for her on Tuesday however, as that is when they will be having the service and putting her dad's ashes in the crypt.

Hope everyone is well this fine day! auh2o you're welcome, I'm not sure about Sec. of Defense, but I hate seeing my friends attacked when they don't deserve it. Not sure why some folks feel the need to do things like that, but it sure gets my hackles up when someone lashes out at folks I care about for no reason other than plain old out & out mean-ness! I'm also not sure why Dud feels like he has to attack Romeena now, perhaps because Me-They won't respond, but Msg #65502 was Dud. By the way, did I read that the leaves are already beginning to turn on your end of the porch?! Wow!
Asa when you start working with Barney & the dremel, get one of his all time favorite treats out (around here we use pieces of hot dog, or peanut butter on a spoon) & give him a bite everytime you start with the dremel. He will be more occupied with that than what you are doing., I mean, he is a Dachshund after all, & they LOVE to eat! And, I'm glad to see you posting more as well.
Boo you should have saved some of the Kool-Aid for the birthday party! ha
Romeena have fun at the party & don't eat too much cake. Is Cat Woman going to be there? Also, as for little Starr & the dremel, same for her, treats, treats, treats. But also, since she has long hair on her feet, be careful not to let it get caught in the ends or it will catch & rip out her hair, Very painful! One thing you can do for her, take an old pair of cheap panty hose or a piece of cheese cloth, wrap her paw & push the nails through the cloth so that the hair is no where near the dremel, then it won't get caught.
I did get to see the fly over last night for the race, but not sure what they were, hubby says either F-15's or F-18's, hard to tell when they are that high up, but it was cool, they were well over & past our house before I even began to hear them! Oh, and my Redskins managed to really stink the joint up last night against the Carolina Panthers in pre-season 44-3 can you believe that?? (don't answer that Asa)
Anyway, I'm off here for a bit, I have to make reservations for our Oct. vacation, we are going to the Bull Terrier nationals in Orlando, FL, but we are going to head out a little early & spend 3 days in St. Augustine, FL! I can't wait, I have always wanted to see the lighthouse there, now I have a chance!

About the robins, I did take a lawn chair over there and looked inside the nest, and there was nada. No egg shells even. But there was also no feathers or parts of bird around either, so that makes me think if there were baby birds in there at one time, they made it out safely. I hope anyway.

Well, Batman came to the birthday party, and it was really fun. The guy was great, stayed in character, and played those kids like violins. His experience was evident. When he arrived, he punched the doorbell, then burst in, carrying a boombox playing appropriate Batman music, also an armload of long skinny balloons, and was pulling a Batman-motif wheeled carryon bag. You cannot imagine what all he produced from that bag during his hour with us. Yes, the man kept the kids spellbound, entertained and frequently in motion for a full hour. He wore them out! His smile never slipped, he did some sleight-of-hand work, and could make anything from a hat to a sword to a flower out of the balloons. Each child got two balloon toys, and he painted each little face. There were seven kids there, counting my two grandsons. Then he got a "call" on his Bat Radio, learned that the bad guys were invading Gotham City, and he had to leave. The kids wanted to see the Batmobile, and he said they could, but he warned them that his cloaking device was activated, so it would just look like a minivan! This energetic, athletic, talented and very entertaining young man did all that for $75. A bargain, if you ask me.

Mavis, thanks for the warning about catching Starr's hair in the Dremel. I've never used one, and probably would not have thought of that. Poor puppy! I like the idea of a piece of old panty hose to hold the hair back - that should work nicely.

This message is mainly for DUD. I checked in a few times over the weekend and really didn’t know what to say, so I didn’t say anything. Now I’m ready.

First, DUD, I want to thank you. (Bet you didn’t see that coming.) Although I didn’t necessarily care for how you did it, you did point out to me, and made me think hard, about my attitude. I enjoy being a scamp, but sometimes my responses and retorts have been more obnoxious than funny. So, you have my appreciation for making me take stock of myself. I’m trying to reach a little higher now.

Second, I’m not going to respond to your recent comments. I’m going to try that whole turning the other cheek and forgiving 70x7 things I’ve heard so much about. I’ve tried to apologize to you, DUD. I meant it sincerely. Still do. But nothing I can say seems to satisfy you, and there’s really nothing left for me to try. I can’t make you accept my apology and move on.

DUD, I hope that you can reflect for a minute and recall all the good and pleasant conversations you had on the porch. Heck, I recall you had some lip-smacking talks about food and what-not with ROMEENA. I also hope that you will finally accept this apology and stop the bitter comments. I’ll bet that if you would do the same for your part in this mess you’d find a crowd more than willing to forgive as well.

This may be your last chance. FLOYD, the administrator of this site, will return soon and wade through the recent discussions. If history is any indication, he likely will block you from posting on this site. I, for one, hope that doesn’t happen. I’d much rather but this all behind and continue on as porch friends, perhaps a little wiser. Or, if you’d rather, part ways on friendly terms.

August 25, 2008 - Msg 65521: Good morning, honeys and dears! Yes, $75 for an hour of really exciting fun for the kids seemed reasonable enough to me. Of course, compared to the birthday parties of my childhood, it was a mite expensive, but that's like comparing apples to oranges. When I was a kid, Mom baked a cake or cupcakes, and as I said earlier, made a pitcher of Kool-Aid. Everyone had a tattered old Pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game around the house, and if not, you could buy one for under a dollar. If the weather permitted, everyone played in the back yard - tag or hide and seek or whatever. That was about the extent of the entertainment.

Things have changed now, though. There's a lot more pressure to provide something imaginative and different. It was starting back when my own kids were small, but about all you could get to come to your home in those days was a cheesy clown, who usually smelled of cigars, who would come in for a while and entertain. That period was the beginning of the little amusement parks and the pizza houses that catered to children's parties. I think Chuck E. Cheese started about then.

I remember we had a place called PennyWhistle Park over in Dallas. It was in a huge, cavernous building, may have been an aircraft hangar at one time. They served pizza and/or hotdogs, and had a dozen or more little kid-sized rides - a little ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, such as that. The kids loved it, and we had a couple of parties there. Then there was Sandy Lake Park, an outdoor version of the same thing, and the kids liked that too. So whatever the weather, there were options. Today, it's more about having something fancy at home, and believe me, Batman filled the bill yesterday. It seems expensive, but as I recall, the PennyWhistle Park parties cost us about $30-35 back in the early 70s, so $75 now isn't out of line. The biggest problem is - what do you do for an encore if you have more than one kid, and then there's always next year! My DIL is already thinking about what to do for Landry's party next February - he'll be eight! I can't believe it.

Well, gotta run. Several little errands to do. Oh, hey, how about those gas prices? We're down to 3.47 here for regular. I can't believe I'm happy to see 3.47, when I can remember 19 cents, but I am. All things are relative, I guess. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Well, when I was a kids, mom made your favorite dinner and dessert, gave you one present and that was that. I have very fond memories of those times with just me and the family. On Erin's birthday last month, she had a friend spend the night, I made her favorite dinner, we had cake and a few presents and she was ecstatic. Fairly cheap and she had a great time (so did I because I wasn't so stressed out). I highly recommend not over-doing kid's birthdays. I find that often it is just the parents feeling guilty or intimidated and trying to "keep up with the Jones", that causes this insanity of having to spend a fortune to entertain the kids at birthday party. I have a friend like that. Everything has to be perfect, even to the point of her calling and telling people what to buy as gifts. Insanity, not to mention incredibly rude.

Well, Sean's doing well today with his schoolwork (hoorah!).

August 25, 2008 - Msg 65526: BOO: The Mrs. and I decided a few years ago that with three kids we couldn't "do it up" every year. (As a kid I had the same birthday experience that you did.) So, we decided we'd mix it up between just us, family parties with grandparents, and kids parties. We mix it up for the three of them, so, at the most, we have one more stressful or costly party a year. Still, we don't overdo and limit the amount we'll spend. They don't feel slighted and we enjoy their birthdays a lot more, too.
