And I sure agree about the questionable scoring in gymnastics. It's been horrible.

I can remember, as a teen, cheering for OJ (the criminal not the drink) during games at Rich Stadium. As soon as he would touch the ball 80,000 people would start chanting "JUICE, JUICE, JUICE." Now I don't think he could get a cup of coffee around here, or anywhere else.

MDC: See, you couldn’t be “red” if you tried.

AUH2O: I think the skimpy uniforms ASA was talking about was on the beach volleyball players. Wish they’d cover up a bit so we’d feel better about our daughter watching, but the Mrs. and I have been following the U.S. team. Boy! Were those some exciting sets last night or what? I thought the sets against the Belgians were great, but last night’s were the Olympics at its best. Those two work so well together, and, that May is absolutely uncanny. I still think it’s a little weird having beach volleyball at the Olympics, but there is no denying the skill and athleticism of the players and can make exciting tv.

AFD: We watch what we can (no DVR or TiVo) of the Olympics. I don’t watch too many sports on tv most the time but I really get into the Olympics and it will be a let-down when they’re over. Of course, it will be nice to get to bed at a decent hour. Only two more years until the winter games! Go Team U.S.A.!

Got to admit, though, in the 100 and 200 men’s it was hard not to root for “Lightning” Bolt. His goofiness is infectious. That was something about the disqualifications. I felt bad for the two disqualified runners, but those are the rules. It buts Shawn in an awkward position, too. But he got the medal fair and square.

Where’s BOO?

LUCY: My daughter saw the Kitt movie last month and loved it. She can't wait until it comes out on DVD. She also loves the other AG movies. We recently subscribed her to get the magazine, which she had been asking for. The Mrs. gave it the mom's seal of approval. They make a point not to include articles about boys, dating, trendy fashion, dieting, etc. Good, clean stuff. Who says entertainment has to be "edgy" to be good?

SPOT: Watch out for Russian tanks while you're in Georgia.

ROMEENA: When I used to hang at Miss Crump's, I always enjoyed SALTY DOG's TAGS quotes. I guess it was the same SALTY DOG. I also got along well with RAFE. I remember he was married to another poster, CHARLENE. Wonder how they're all doing?

August 21, 2008 - Msg 65418: Hey, Me-They! Yes, I read comics as a kid. Sure wish I'd had the good sense to keep them, because I'd be rich as the hills right now. I read the old original Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny comics as a little kid, then being a tomboy I loved Superman, Plastic Man and other action comics. Then as tweenager, I read Archie (remember Betty, Veronica and Jughead?). I was given an allowance, and on Saturdays my mom would see that I got to the drugstore, where I spent most of said allowance on comics. Oh, those were the days!

Well, Starr is asking for attention, as if she doesn't get enough. She's limping around and favoring her left foreleg for some reason. I'd already be sitting at Dr. Mike's with her, except for the fact that it seems to be improving. I first noticed it when I got home this morning, examined the foot for a burr or an injury, and couldn't find anything. I was so tired I really didn't trust myself to drive without getting some rest first, and now it seems a bit better, so guess we'll wait and see how it is in the morning. She may have made it sore by digging at the bedroom door after I left last night, the little doofus. I'll be glad when she finally adopts a more philosophical attitude toward my absences!

I saw one just last night and I couldn't believe it - racewalking?! A dumber looking "sport" I have never seen. And I'll bet it looks even sillier for the men's competition.

August 21, 2008 - Msg 65422: I got those same glasses, MDC. Boy was I disappointed. Like I'm sure a lot of kids, I sent (I think $2) in change in an envelope behind my parents back. I can still see that ad as clear as day in my mind.

I read all kinds of comics, including teh ones you mentioned. Being a child of the 1970s, my favorites were the Justice League and Avengers. I had literally thousands of them that I wished I had saved, too. They are in the bottom of a landfill somewhere (sorry, there wasn't recycling in the area yet).

Speaking of Archie, I also remember than in teh early 1970s there was a tv cartoon of Archie and the gang, as well as Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Anyone remember them? I also remember it was teamed with the cartoon show, "The Groovy Ghoulies." I loved that cartoon!

Hi Lucy, to answer your question, yes many of the Katrina folks settled in the area, but Houston is so gigantic and stuffed with people that you wouldn't even know the difference! Driving there is like playing a video game except the accidents are real.

Hey Me-They, thanks for asking about me. Comic books...hmmm...believe it or not, we weren't allowed to read comic books. My Dad said it would keep us from reading things that were more eduactional and I guess he was right because I was an avid reader of good books and still am, really. I had an aunt and uncle that owned a small convenience store and now and then we would visit them there and my sister and I would go to the back of the store and read the comic books. It was the only time we were allowed.

Well, now BMX bike racing is an Olymic sport...weird. I hear what some of you are saying about the way the women are dressed...some of the stuff they guys wear don't leave anything to the imagination, either...gross-looking in all that spandex! I have only watched a little of the Olympics and missed the race yesterday with the tall guy from Jamaica...would have like to have seen him race.

Happy Friday everyone. It's a three day weekend for me. Ma and a buddy are playing our 36 hole extravaganza on Monday. Once or twice a year we just play golf all day. I enjoy it for the fellowship as much as anything. We have a lot of fun. You know, good friends are hard to come by so you really need to treasure those you have.

ASA: I may go up to the "Y" and get me a corner room. Actually, my weekend may not even be that exciting; I have a bathroom to paint. I need to start crossing a few things off that "honey-do" list. We haven't had any rain for about 10 or so days so there's no grass to cut (thank you, Lord!). Otherwise, just preaching and spending time with the wife and kids. Y'know, my weekend is starting to sound pretty good!

"Monk" and "Psych" tonight unless we watch the Olympics. Most likely I'll sit there clicker in hand and keep flipping back and forth. That always drives the Mrs. crazy.

August 22, 2008 - Msg 65438: Thanks for the coffee, M-T, you made it just the way I like it! Asa is right about friends. Yesterday when we went to Houston, we brought Sean's best friends, Josh, along. He is one of the boys with the alcoholic mom that I mention from time to time. Anyway, he definitely has some OCD issues and is already a hoarder at his young age. In the car he and Sean were talking about "Monk" and Josh is a Monk freak. He never misses it. Sean and I watched it the other night to see if it was something he might like but neither of us were really "hooked" by it but should probably give it another chance...sorry you have to paint the bathroom this weekend. I'll trade ya..I have to go to a youth lock-in tonight (groan).

Well, Bruce had another meeting with the builder we hired and that guy really seems to be on the ball and is already at work getting things lined up and giving some good advice. He is allowing Bruce to work along side him and give alot of input, etc. Seems like a really nice guy. Bruce took Erin with him to the meetins since I was out of town and she had a great time, the Mrs was really nice to her and their son played with her. We are supposed to be getting together for a barBque soon. Things are working out well in that department and its a good thing because poor Bruce has been having to work himself to death on the job. He had a big shipment of computers and laptops come in and he has to set all of that up himself. It has to be done and there is nobody to help him until September when the new guy comes on board. He is getting tired, and comes home, eats, watches a little Olympics and off to bed. I barely even see him anymore. It won't last forever but he tells me that he could work everyday around the clock and never catch up.

The kids start school here on Monday, too, and I hate getting up earlier but will be glad for Erin to have something to do and it will be nice to get back to routine.

August 22, 2008 - Msg 65439: Good morning, everyone! It's a beautiful day here. Eddie couldn't mow yesterday because it was too wet, but he's coming today, thank goodness. The grass is above my ankles! It's a good thing Starr doesn't go outside, she'd get lost!

I went to our monthly JOY meeting at church last night - we had hotdogs and peach cobbler with ice cream. Yum! You know, sometimes it's good to count our blessings. A great blessing for me has been that I like just about everything you could put on a table, and absolutely nothing disagrees with me. Out of the eight friends at my table, one doesn't like hotdogs, one likes them but gets indigestion, and one has a doctor who has her so scared of eating even a gram of fat that she refused. That left five of us, and of those five, four left off various trimmings - no onions, no cheese, or no chili, whatever. I was the only one who really enjoyed a great hotdog! Naturally, the fat-fearer didn't eat her cobbler, because of the ice cream. Another doesn't like peach cobbler! Can you imagine? However, fat old diabetic me just sat there munching my hotdog with ALL the trimmings, and ate every smidgin of my cobbler. I took a little extra insulin before the meal, and just did fine. Like I said, I'm so grateful for my eclectic appetite and cast-iron digestion. I like it all!

Well, guess I'd better get moving around here. Starr is hungry and wondering why I haven't fed her, I'm sure. I always get hung up on this computer on my way to the kitchen, and she just hates that! Blessings, friends! --Romeena

I remember that Honeycomb commercial, Me-They. "Honeycomb's big, yeah, yeah, yeah!"

Well, looks like I spoke too soon about my wife understanding why I can't go over to Hawaii to be there with her. I'd like to just snatch up a ticket and whisk off over there, but we just can't afford it. Not if we want to be able to pay the mortgage on the house, along with all the other bills. And she still has to buy another ticket just to get home. It is at a reduced price but it is still up there.
I know she is under a lot of stress right now, but me buying (another) plane ticket just isn't do-able right now.
I even told her(when I thought she was ok with it) that I didn't really want to leave Kai also, because she was already getting really anxious about her mommy being gone, so she said to bring Kai along. Yeah, we couldn't even afford one ticket let alone two. She's not thinking straight, and I understand why, but it is still killing me trying to be the voice of reason when she is begging me to come over. And now is getting angry with me, because she hasn't been calling me lately. I hate to say it, but I am kind of glad when she doesn't call, because she brings up my coming over there all the time, and I have to tell her we can't over and over again.

"Hey" to TOM. It's been hot here, too, but we are getting a little rain now and then at least. Hang in there...fall is coming soon.

Guess what?! Remember I mentioned last week that Erin's best friend had head lice?..well, you guessed it. Erin started scratching her head and I found a few lice, very few and they looked dead already. I have been shampooing her hair with that Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo that is supposed to repel lice. Anyway, I decided to treat her again with the Lice Free and will have to do all the combing with the nit comb again, etc. I am sick and tire of this business. We seem to have an epidemic of the stuff this summer down here.

Better go fix lunch for the kids...

Almost forgot...last night Bruce and I and the kids were watching the Fun Girl episode and Erin told me, "I like Andy..he's handsome. Don't you think so mom?" I said, "You bet. Andy's got it goin' on". She then pointed to Bruce and said quietly to me, "What if he was bald like Daddy? Would you still like him?". I replied, "Yes, I would love him anyway"..hehe..I thought that was pretty funny.

August 22, 2008 - Msg 65449: It may be, Opiemom, I think the funeral discount is what my wife is using to get her ticket home, and that is after she paid twice as much for her round trip ticket(but she extended it too long so she couldn't use it to get back) but that is still going to be a good $500 or more. So even if I could get a deal like that, it would still be too much right now. I just hope she will understand that.

Boo, I don't know when the funeral is, so I don't know when she is coming home. They had her Grandma's funeral was a week after she died(she was cremated).

A friend of mine told me that so she tried it on her goats (she figured if it worked on people it should work on goats) and by golly - it did! She uses the lemonade and the watermelon/kiwi (the light colors. Thought that was interesting.

Prayers for my Alma Mater (Cincinnat Christian University). A professor left her 11 month old daughter in the minivan a couple of days ago and I don't have to tell you the horror she found 8 hours later. No I don't understand how you can leave a baby in the carseat - mine talked to much or babbled. . .but it happened. They all need our prayers.

I am not sure about 65448 - I think it goes back to global warming. . .or maybe the weather. . .wasn't it Calvin Cooledge who talked about the weather?!

August 22, 2008 - Msg 65454: Now, that is one I have never heard, HM...koolaide. I read about alot of remedies and never read that one. Interesting. I used the LiceFreeee and it is non-toxic and works well. Of course, the KoolAid would be cheaper, wouldn't it? If we get a repeat, I will try it.

Oh my, so sad about the baby. That happened to 2 different children here in Texas last week. One was a toddler whose mom was a nurse and left him asleep in the back while she worked her shift. She said she forgot to drop him at the daycare. I can't even imagine the horror of such a thing. God help the parents. Everyone is in such a hurry these days, rushing here and there, and if a child is asleep in a carseat, I can see how it might happen.

It looks like it is about to storm here. I think I will go out and take a look around..

I suppose it could happen quite innocently, but my child was always in the back of my mind when doing anything, so it is still hard for me to understand.

August 22, 2008 - Msg 65456: Good afternoon, friends. Such a tragedy, all the children who die every summer in a hot car. I'm sure a lot of pets die the same way, it just doesn't make the papers. Tragic and sad, and hard to understand. If it's hard for us to understand it, just imagine how the parents must feel. They will spend the rest of their life asking how they could have done such a thing. There must be something about the unguarded moment, the preoccupied mind, unusual circumstances, a change in routine, whatever - that one would have to experience to really understand. I think it's time for automakers to explore a safety device, perhaps a motion sensor mounted in the center of the roof of the interior of a car, something that activates in five minutes after the engine is turned off, something like that. It could then start blowing the horn like a theft alarm, or sounding a siren or something. I can't believe that in a world where the car can be started from a remote location, or the doors unlocked by someone across the country (an OnStar service), a forgotten-child sentry couldn't be developed. It would need a kill-switch, so that an adult could remain in the car by choice, but that would have to be a proactive option.

Sterling, I really hope your wife will realize that you're ultimately trying to protect her by not going into debt for that ticket. However, as you said, she's probably not thinking straight right now, so is it possible that it might be the best thing to just bite the bullet and go on over there? You'll have to double up to pay for it later, but that should tell her a lot, too, that you would put yourself out that much for her. Just wondering....

Boo, I think I'd be keeping Erin away from that little girl, or talking with her mother about getting her bug problem under control. You're right, though, the miserable things do seem to be more prevalent here lately. A lot of the nurses who have small children have been talking about it. So far, my grandkids have escaped, though they are in school. I wouldn't be surprised if they got them there, but they haven't yet.

August 22, 2008 - Msg 65457: Just thought about something else. You know, I really don't remember anything about children dying in hot cars when my own were little. I've been wondering about that, because I can't imagine that we were such wonderful parents that we wouldn't have let such a thing happen. I think I've finally hit on the answer. We didn't have carseats! Nothing like parents have today, the cocoon-like, rear-facing shells in the back seat, that are so comfortable the kid goes to sleep immediately. No, our toddlers stood on the front seat braced behind our shoulder, or if very small, they lay on the seat beside us, or sat in someone's lap. There were a few "car seats", a little box-like affair with holes for the kid's legs to poke through, and it was mounted on two bars that curved over the back of the passenger seat, suspending the whole thing in mid-air over the seat. Ours sported a little steering wheel, positioned at just the right level to knock out any front teeth the child might have had, in the event of a crash. There just was no way the kids were out of sight and possibly out of mind. It's a bit hard to forget a child that's sitting in a lap, or lying beside you on the seat. I guess this is just one example of technology working against us. --Romeena
