I took some time off from the kids this evening and went shopping and bought a few things to wear and actually went and had my nails done (haven't done that since before Sean was born..over 13 years).

Poor Starr (sniff!). I sure hopes she gets over that seperation anxiety on of these days soon. I really feel sorry for her.

I didn't receive a community survey, Romeena, but I did receive a survey from a police officer. I saw him walking up the street going door to door, but instead of hiding in another room, I decided I probably should do the right thing and answer the door when he showed up.
I did, and he gave me a survey and asked if I would fill it out(not required like that census one). He said they were going around seeing if there were any areas in the community where we don't feel entirely safe and that might need some extra help from the police. I thought that was considerate.
Then I thought, someone must be up for re-election this year. ;)

Me-They, you asked about my job search. Well, I have an interview on Monday with a rent-to-own place as a delivery person. Not really the one I was hoping to get interviewed for, but I guess beggars can't be choosers.
And we'll be needing the money if what my wife just did today over there in Hawaii is as bad as it is. I got a text message from her saying she got in an accident with one of her dad's cars(not a Corvette). So I call her right away, and everyone involved was ok. Just a fender-bender. But it did bend the fender pretty good I'm told.
Then she lays on me that her dad says it will probably come to two thousand dollars to fix, and she has to pay it. And that's not including the other car.
I told her, we don't have that kind of money. We would be lucky to be able to afford $500 right now.
I asked if her dad had insur@nce, and she said he doesn't have collision.
So then she asked me if she could offer to give $1000, and I said we don't even have that to spare.
She asked why, so I said it was because of this $1200.00 mortgage we have(which just went up a bit after our new property taxes rose).
So of course she has to put it all on me since I am not working now and that gives her an excuse to do that again.
Anyone know if our auto insur@nce over here would cover something like that, or is that just on the cars we own. Just wondering. I don't have the papers in front of me right now.

Sorry to be such a downer tonight. And geeze, Kai and I had such a good afternoon too, playing tennis, and ...well, dolls, and her putting on a little musical "concert" with music from her school program.

Call your agent and get the straight story, but I'm thinking your wife might be covered. It may be helpful that Hawaii is a state, even though it's not mainland.

Well, grandson's team lost - by a whisker, but they lost, and this was the first game of the end-of-season tournament. So, they're out. He was one disappointed little feller. Well, there's always next season.

Starr was in pretty good shape when I got home. Her little cheeks were damp, but not soaked as they usually are, so I'm hoping maybe she's growing out of some of that separation anxiety. I sure hope so, poor little girl.

Tom can relate to what I have been going through, he & I have talked about it before. Hope June will bring some joy to you, Dear...You asked about Gizmo (Gizzy or Gizzard, as I like to call him). My mom-in-law called me the other day and said he is the best dog in the world. She adores him (and he adores her). She said he is one smart little hombre (we were thinking of renaming him "Juan"...hehe..but we didn't). He has adjusted very well with her and is completely house trained and when she says "no" to anything, he stops whatever it is he is doing...I'm thinking of asking her if she will trade me Gizmo for the kids...(kidding). Anyway, she said whenever she sits down, Gizmo jumps in her lap and lies down, but the other day she had something on her lap that she was working on so when he came to get on her lap, she said, "no!" and he immediately backed up and went and got on the other chair. He is a really cool dog.

So sorry to hear about your wife's accident and very glad she wasn't injured, Sterling. Prayers going up for your financial situation. Hang in there and keep your eye on the positives (like the good times you will have this summer with Kai!).

Ro, I was a program on Animal Planet in which a dog trainer went to someone's house to help out with a pet problem. One couple had a Doberman that had severe seperation anxiety when it's owners left. The trainer had them "condition" him to their absence by having them walk out of the apartment and come back after counting to 10, then repeat it using longer intervals of time. It didn't take the dog long to "get" the idea that mom and dad would return when they left and it really worked.

May 31, 2008 - Msg 63130: Good afternoon, everyone. Phillip, I've often seen that Animal Planet nature show, and you're right, it's awesome. Very peaceful and soothing. By the way, friend, have you thought about adopting a TAGS name? It's not a requirement, but most of us have. It just adds to the fun.

Boo, I've tried that conditioning technique with her, and it didn't really help much. I think the problem is not so much separation anxiety as it is she's just plain sad and grieving that I'm gone. I think she knows I'll be back, she just doesn't want me to leave, and I don't know how to fix that. She actually plans ahead and is prepared for my return, because she piles her toys against the bathroom door. When I return and open the door, she immediately starts ferrying the toys out of there, carries them into the living room, far away from that bathroom. For some reason, she thinks I won't put her in there if her toys aren't there. When I'm planning to leave, it's useless to put her toys in ahead of time, because she takes them out as fast as I can put them in. She's a funny little critter.

Mavis, I know what you mean about special days being hard, and yes, birthdays and the anniversary of the passing can be harder than major holidays. May is still a hard month for me, because I lost my Dale on May 15, 1996. His birthday is five days after mine in July, and my mom's is two days after his, so I sort of muddle through the last part of July, too. I can tell you this, it has gotten a bit easier the last couple of years, so hang in there. Maybe it's because I'm getting old enough now to realize that it won't be that many years before I join them, and you know what? That's okay with me. My kids hate for me to talk like that, and I remember hating it when my parents did, but now I'm hearing myself say the same thing. For a Christian, death isn't an end, it's a beginning. The older you get, the sweeter that sounds, trust me.

BTW, I know that when we rent cars our ins#rance covers if there is any damage. My husband was putting in window fluid and the flimsy hood flew up & cracked the windshield. Our ins#rance paid for it. So, just call the ins#rance man and pray!
Philip (Hobo)- I don't believe I've welcomed you. I've been friends with these fine people for a year and a half, since Mr. Knott's died. It's a wonderful community/family. I pray that your family member is healed of cancer.
Mavis- Sweetie, I'm sorry your hurting. Mother's day was hard for me because I knew all of my children weren't with me (remember still birth, Nathan as well as the miscarriages). Bless your heart. Next time, let us know briefly so that we can be praying for you!
Romeena- I hope Starr gets over her anxiety soon. Too bad your grandson's team didn't win. However, I think it's important for children to know that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Just keep doin' your best.

May 31, 2008 - Msg 63136: Good evening, everyone. HoBo, I think you did fine! That's a great name, and to my knowledge has never been used here.

Lucy, have you only been on the porch a year and half? It seems like we've known you forever. And you're just now turning on your a/c? Wow, that must be nice. I just got my electric bill, for $210. My a/c has been on for nearly two months. I keep it on 76-77, so it isn't running a lot. This house is well-insulated and is relatively easy to cool, thank goodness.

My son handled things with my grandson so well. He's such a good dad. He never said it didn't matter that they lost, because that would trivialize the whole thing, but he did say that he played a good game. He pointed out a really good play he made at third base, and made much of that. He mentioned the two runs he batted in, and how the score would have been worse without those runs. He assured him that he'll play next season, and how much fun it will be, and mentioned that he'll be able to help his little brother learn the game when he starts T-ball at the same time. He left the child with a smile on his face, and that's what matters.

Well, if it ain't one thing, it's another. I just looked out back and realized there are no landscape lights on. That means the pond pumps aren't running either, as they're on the same circuit. The GFCI is tripped, and won't reset, so there's a problem somewhere. Occasionally ants build up in a junction box or somewhere (WHY are they attracted to such places???) and it shorts things out. So, I'll have to run an extension out to the pond, because my friend Ted can't come until Monday to fix it, and the fish won't make it without aeration and filtration. Too much algae in this heat. Fortunately, I've got the extension cords to swing it. I have a compelshun about those things - whenever I see a good heavy-duty one on sale, I buy it. Sure does help out at Christmas when my son is putting up my outside lights. Seems we always need just one more extension cord than we did last year, and I can usually come up with what he needs. I've got them ranging from 10-footers up to 100-footer!

Well, off I go to rig up an extension cord. It will be easy, I have two separate circuits out there, I'll just plug into an outlet on the other circuit. Hang on, little fishies, I'm coming!

June 01, 2008 - Msg 63139: Yep, Sterling, I got that 100-footer a while back when Lowe's had it on sale really cheap. At the time, I didn't have the power outlets out in the yard away from the house, and to operate a hedge clipper or leaf blower or any such thing, it got to be a problem. It's about 65 or 70 feet from the back of the house to the back fence, so a 50-footer wouldn't work. I now have four power outlets located around the yard, so it's not a problem, but back then I needed that really long one. My son still uses it at Christmas, because to balance the load to all the lights out front, he brings one line over the roof from the back. I have three outlets in the eaves out front and two in the porch, but some of them are on the same circuit, so we have to import part of the supply from a circuit in the back. It looks like the midway at a county fair around here at Christmas! I love lights!

Little Toye Starr had a good bath tonight, and I just have to brag a little. She just looks beautiful. She's such a pretty little thing, and so sweet. I'm just sure that the Plum chose her and sent her to me. You never saw anything so pitiful in your life though, as a wet Maltese. Mavis will know what I mean. She looks like a little pink mosquito. All that silky white hair just disappears when wet, and all you see is a tiny pink body, a stringy tail and two enormous brown eyes. Afterward, I wrapped her in a big beach towel and just cuddled her for a while, then blew her dry (took about five minutes) and combed her out. She looks gaw-jus!

Today is preachin' and THEN-- Graduation for "Opie". Yea, he's getting out of high school. Please pray for him as he seeks where the Lord wants him to serve in life. Opie has a BIG heart and willing to do anything for anyone. He's just not big on the academic front so I don't see him pursuing college, unless they are classes required for his work. He just needs to find "where he fits into the big picture".
We are having a BIG cookout afterwards, so ya'll come!!! I think the Darlin's are coming to entertain. Asa- you can go barefooted,(just watch the buffalo chips)

June 01, 2008 - Msg 63144: Good morning, all. New Neighbor, please congratulate Opie for me. Don't worry about him, dear. He'll do fine. Of my four, two have degrees, two do not. The daughter who doesn't is settled into radio work, and just loves it. She does air time as a DJ and announcer, goes to remote broadcasts, and is ad sales director as well. She's extremely bright, could have sailed through college, but is doing what she loves. Youngest son tried college, couldn't settle into the groove, so worked for a while doing display setups and some sales for a household fixture rep. He learned the business, then stepped off into the abyss and organized his own company, doing the same thing. He's doing quite well, has branched out into other products, and loves it. Could a business degree have helped him? Possibly, but he's doing okay, and I've always thought that if he had gotten a degree, he would be sitting in somebody's office right now, drawing a finite salary, and looking forward to his two-week vacation, instead of being free to soar wherever he chooses. College just isn't for everyone - different strokes, as they say - and money isn't everything.

Well, guess I'd better go. Am heading over to Eloise's for dinner today - taking little Starr. Bentley will be there, and they're good buddies. Have a great Sabbath, everyone. --Romeena

Ro, I know what you mean about the comments on joining our loved ones who’ve died. My kids don’t like me to talk that way, but I’m not afraid of death, and also have that peaceful, know where I’m going, feeling.

Sorry I’ve not been on the porch much. I went to Montana a few weeks back for my nieces college graduation. I’m so proud of her. She chose of all things, Mining Engineering, to go into; and already has a great job. Anyhow, I was there for 4 days, came back for 3 days and then got the flu. Yuck. Those things, plus lots of yard and garden work, and it seems like I have gone for days without even checking my e-mail. The only reason I’ve got time today is that it’s raining today. (I was right there in it!)

Sterling, I sure hope you can find a job soon! It sounds like that would really help things out and relieve some stress for both you and your wife. Sorry about the car accident; thank goodness no one was hurt!

June 01, 2008 - Msg 63148: Good evening to all you Porchsters! Wanted to stop by and say hey to ya'll before I hit the ironin board. Been busy all day out at my old homestead. (the house in the country I was living in before Mr. Neff & I got married) There were some things that needed fixin out there, so me, the hubby, my brother, his girlfriend, & his 2 kids AND his dog all headed out there for the day. Man I DO miss that place! I am a country girl at heart & I just HATE living in the city, can't wait until we can get back out there, but things just ain't set to do that yet.
I was watching a show on TV yesterday called "On the Road with 16 Children" can you believe those folks actually called that a vacation?? Not my idea of one, that's for sure! It was a pretty interesting show, they are all traveling in a huge motorhome and grandpaw is bringing up the rear with a van pulling another camper! 16 kids, can you imagine??
HoBo I like the new name! What part of TN are you in? I'm in Bristol. Yep, the NASCAR Bristol.
Well I'm off here to watch Second Hand Lions, that was such a great movie. If you get a chance to watch it you really should. Not filthy or dirty, just a good family movie.

One thing I have been wondering - and what I really should have taken more time considering before I left my job - is what the heck am I going to tell the person in my interview tomorrow about why I left, that doesn't sound like I would just quit a job willy-nilly?! Cause I did ponder quiting for a while before I gave my notice, I just didn't think enough of how it might affect my getting another job.
I mean, I am not going to lie to them, but saying that "another co-worker wanted his old job back so I was knocked out of my job and moved to another dept that I didn't want to be in" might sound kind of blunt. ;)
Must be a better way of saying that.

Hey Hobo, I went through the Smoky Mountains in Tennesee on my way to South Carolina, and that was some of the most awesome country I have ever seen. You in that area? Cause if you are, you are pretty lucky.

June 01, 2008 - Msg 63151: Good late evening, all. Just got home from Eloise's an hour or so ago, had a nice day there with my son and his sweet wife and the two little boys. Eloise, of course, is my son's MIL, so it was all family. Bentley greeted Starr at the door, she promptly charged and plowed into his knees, and the chase was on. It's just hilarious, watching big old galumphy Bentley playing with tiny Starr. She's not one bit afraid of him, nor should she be. He treats her like she was made of eggshell. He flopped down for a nap, and she snuggled in beside him. It was so funny, the comparison in their sizes. It looked like Bentley had a puppy!

This morning before church I realized the pond pumps were no longer running, and couldn't figure it out. Then it dawned on me that the outlet I plugged the extension into is on a light sensor, so it shut off at daylight! I had to take some electrical tape out there and block the sensor so the pumps would come back on. I'm glad I noticed, because the fish would have been without aeration all day, in the sun. Algae growth burns up a lot of oxygen, and the algae is blooming right now, so the fish could have suffocated without aeration. The pond is just under 1000 gallons, not big enough for the fish to survive without pumps.

I just heard from REV, he just finished a concert and is very tired, but wished us all well, and as always, reminds us that Jesus loves us all very much. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Got the job interview tomorrow - getting my hair done today (needs a new color job to my natural auburn). Decided I'll just purty up my own nails and they will do fine. The person interviewing me knows me too well and will see the fake nails and laugh. If not this job - a possibility of doing English and Language Arts at a high school I travelled too! God will know what is best!

June 02, 2008 - Msg 63159: Good morning everyone. It was a pretty nice weekend overall here. Rainy and humid on Saturday, but Sunday was beautiful. We are supposed to be in the low 80s most of this week with a chance of thunderstorms—pretty typical early summer days. The only thing that ruins it is the darned humidity. It can feel like the tropics here sometimes.

STERLING: I like the way ROMEENA phrased that. Sorry to hear about your wife’s accident. Like MDC said, call your agent. Prayers that your job search and that situation work out easily.

BOO: Happy trails; I hope you have/had a great time. I’ll save any moulages until later in the week.

LUCY: It does seem like longer since you’ve been coming around. I forget exactly how long I’ve been loafing around here, but I think it’s about 3-3/1/2 years.

HOBO: Nice name. Just stay away from my wallet.

Since we are leaving for vacation on Nora’s birthday and a lot is going on this week, we celebrated on Saturday, a week early. Well, she loved “The Road to Avonlea.” We also got her a few casual dresses which she really liked, too. She’d much rather where a “play dress” then shorts. Anyway, Avonlea season one has 13 episodes, and she’s already watched 7 of them. But, she’ll watch them over and over. She said she might even like it more than “Little House on the Prairie,” which she loves. I think it probably has more to do with the fact that she’s seen just about every LHOTP a dozen times.

BOO, STERLING, SPOT, MERRI, AFD, etc: I highly recommend the series to any of you with young daughters in Nora’s age range. If they like Little House, or “Anne of Green Gables” and the American Girl movies or stuff like that, they will really enjoy the series. Heck, I even found myself enjoying them. No cursing, no uncomfortable situations, good lessons, and beautiful period scenery. If you’re not familiar with the series, it is supposed to take place on Prince Edward Island in Canada about 1900 in the village where Anne of Green Gables is set. In fact, the same production company did this as the Anne PBS miniseries in the early 90s, and some characters from that show like Marilla (still played by Colleen Dewhurst) show up. You can find whole seasons at Amazon (I think there were five total) but they are kind of pricey, around $50. Normally, I’d never spend that kind of money for something like this, but as long as she’s watching Avonlea and Little House, she’s not interested in other stuff I’d rather not have her watching.

Its funny, I was thinking that the series was produced in partnership with Disney for the Disney channel in the early 1990s. My, how things change. Now, young girls are getting such classics as “Hannah Montana” and “That’s So Raven” from Disney. Makes you think.

I am enjoying a cup coffee in my posh hotel room overlooking the beautiful city of San Antonio, and let me tell you, I am being pampered! I am used to Best Western and this place we are is 5 star. The best part is that is isn't costing me a thing (or I wouldn't be here). Bruce's company is paying for everything. I slept in this morning after being up late. There is so much to do here in SA! We went and had a great steak dinner last night and when we got back to the hotel, there was ice in the ice bucket, robes laid out, flower on the bed, and chocolates on the bedside tables...I'm not use to this kind of treatment but since so many of you were hoping I would have a nice vacation, I thought I would pass all that info on to you...hehe...I would say I wish you were all here, but we would be pretty cramped in here.

I think I will get dressed and go out and do a little shopping. Later!

ps-Ro, I think what you told Sterling to say in the job interview was perfect.

June 02, 2008 - Msg 63166: Afternoon porch, still trying to catch up all on the news from last week. Seems like I missed a lot while I was away.

We had a good week, relaxed on the beach, and slept late. The kids did very well, we let each of them take a friend, so we had 2 17 year old boys and 2 14 year old girls with us. Amazingly the the week went well and the kids we are great.
The beach was pretty quite, the weather was warm but not hot. All in all it was a good week.

Welcome to the newcomers.

I will cook dinner tonight: grilled chicken, baked potatoes, salad, chocolate layer cake. sweet tea, or kool aid to drink.

Heck, we just went out and purchased sealed mattress and pillow covers to use at our rented house! June 02, 2008 - Msg 63171: Spot asked if someone could cook breakfast in the morning because he's too tired, and I didn't see that anyone offered, so ok, I'm cooking breakfast. The menu will be boiled eggs, whole wheat toast, and sliced bananas and cantelope. And coffee or water. It's only served between 5:00 and 5:30, but most of you all don't sleep anyway.
I'm so glad I don't have your hotel compelsion, M-T. I just enjoy staying in them; if they appear clean I assume they are. I don't go sniffing around for germs or dirt, or worse. I find the older I get, the more I can tolerate things that aren't perfect. A messy house, messy car, whatever. As long as it's not stinking, I'm ok. Lifes too short to sweat the small stuff.

June 03, 2008 - Msg 63178: Good morning, all, and thank you for that lovely prayer, Tom. Prayers for your nephew, HoBo, as he faces the days and weeks ahead. Prayers not only for healing, but for strength and courage as well.

It's a lovely clear day, strong breeze blowing but the temperature is already at 77, at 7:38 a.m. It will be a hot one here, too.

I'm up early, got to take my car over for an oil and filter change. It's always a pleasant experience. I think I've told you all about this before, but my dealership has a lovely waiting area, with nice furniture, thick rugs, fresh flowers, a cappucino machine and freshly baked cookies and muffins. You can watch the lady take them out of the oven! I used to take the Plum, and will now take Starr along. The folks don't mind, and in fact sales people and secretaries will come from all around to fuss over her. There is a treat jar on the cashier's desk, and you can bet the Plum knew it was there. Starr isn't too impressed with treats, nothing like the Plum was, but she loves all the attention she gets.

They will change the oil and filter, lube anything that needs it, run it through a diagnostic and if anything is needed, they'll give me the option of waiting if it's a short fix, or will put me in a nice loaner for free if necessary. Usually there is nothing else needed, and I go home after about an hour in a freshly washed and vacuumed car - all for less than $40. Now you can't beat that with a stick! These people wrote the book on service - literally. They really do have a book out! For those of you who are familiar with the Dallas area, I'm talking about Sewell Village Cadillac, on Lemmon Avenue, not far from Love Field.

Watched the Dr. Breen (Preacher from New York) episode last night....Relax..Take it Easy....could not help but thing of us on the porch after going to services and meaning to take life slower and then something else (Band Concert) comes up and changes our plans....great episode....

I was in ROMEENA's neck of the woods Thursday thru early this morning. Went and saw my beautiful daughter in Dallas...Took her to Forth Worth and we stayed at The Hyatt at the Stockyards...Robyn loves Cowtown..Had great food, went to the Ft.Wt. Zoo, Six Flags, Kimbell Museum...Great Food....We had a great time...she still doesn't get the attraction of TAGS, but I am working on it.....She makes an aold man like me young..she has such spirit...loves her computer and book learnin'....

Hope everyone had a great weekend...will read some archives......
