My dad told me that that in the 40s, phone numbers were 5 digits. Then in the 50s they added the prefix "words", like ours was "Crestwood" and it became CR4-0000.
In 1961 my older sister got a blue Princess phone (Not a private line, of course, just an extension) but she thought she had died and gone to heaven! ha

Hope everyone is doing well today.

Been a busy few days on my end of the porch.

I have been dealing with tendonitis in my left wrist. Not sure what I did to cause the problem but it sure is painful and difficult to do chores..hurts to vaccum, fold clothes and certain movements of my hand are very painful. Anybody ever dealt with this and have do you any good remedies?

School is offically over (whew!). We attended honors day for my daugther yesterday morning. She received several awards and then went to a frieds house to celebrate the end of Middle School with a pool party. I came on to work after lunch so I missed checking in.

SPOT, stay safe and take care. thank goodness no one was hurt.

Lunch menu will be: grilled ham and cheese sandwhiches, potato soup, pickles, little debbie cakes and sweet tea to drink. see you at lunch.

Now,have y'all ever seen a possum playing tennis? Ha! It's most likely from me lifting Laci,I'd wager. Anyway,doctor told me that Aleve will help,also to ice it when it first flares up and there are braces/wraps out there that will help. You might want to consider a shot of cortisone.I got one because of my sciatica & he said it would also help the elbow pain. Hope you feel better soon.

Spot,I heard about the tornado in Cherokee County & figured you'd be busy.Hope things settle down work & weather wise for you.

I'm heading up to Cherokee NC to spend the weekend in a relaxing mountain cabin. If y'all are up in those parts,see a possum rocking on a cabin porch,feel free to drop in!

Last night the kids and I watched the ep where Aunt Bee dates Mr. Goss. That Sarah Edwards made me so mad in that one...what a busybody. We also watched the ep about the blond nurse, It's called "Three's a Crowd" and I remember years ago we had a conversation here on the porch about the blond actress who played Mary. Someone told us that she had said some mean things about Andy after playing that part with him. Anyone remember what that was about? All I can say, is Andy never should have let Peggy get away. I watched Mayberry Minutemen the other day and that Helen Crump was so grumpy, when she was chewing out Andy, she reminded me of a Chihuahua on Crack!

May 23, 2008 - Msg 62988: TV Land showed one of the Peggy episodes tonight and Sean and I watched it. Sean was sick with the virus today so we stayed home all day. We also watched the ep where Barney gets kicked out of Mrs. Mendlebright's. The scene when Andy and Opie are walking home from the Grand and they see the lights flickering on and off in the courthouse is hilarious! The way Thelma Lou looks sitting at the desk when Andy turns the light on is great, and when Opie yells, "Pa, Barny's face is bleedin'!". Great stuff...Andy to Barney, "You need to get a room!"

May 24, 2008 - Msg 62991: Good guess, Boo. I worked Wednesday night, didn't sleep too well on Thursday, then worked Thursday night, so by yesterday I was pretty worthless. Just sort of dragged around here trying to get some good out of the day, but without much success. Then last night Eloise and I went out to see our grandsons perform. The 4 year old had a piano "recital", which was precious. His little piece consisted of thirteen notes, and he narrated it, like this: "C, C, C, rest, C, C, C, rest, G, F, E, D, C, C, C!" You could hear his little voice above the notes as he played, and it was just hilarious! When he was finished, we risked being considered rude, and left, in order to catch the last two innings of the other grandson's ball game. He's seven, has played since T-ball at age four, and the improvement in his playing is astonishing. He's making a pretty good little ball player. His first year, he was playing third base and came within a whisker of getting beaned, when a line drive came right at him. Since he was on his knees with his back to the batter, playing with a beetle at the time, the ball whizzed right over his head and he never even knew it! His dad (my son), just grinned and said "I'm so proud!" That little beetle-watcher is now a pretty respectable player, though. They do grow up. He has his own bat, and he connects pretty often, with a surprising amount of power. His coach refers to his bat as "Excalibur". (heehee)

Who was asking about De§? Of course we remember her! Why do you ask? Is she okay? She's a fellow Texan, lives not very far from my daughters.

Well, I have a lot to do, so guess I'd better get busy. My desk looks like Paper Mountain, my closet could be hiding Jimmy Hoffa, and I have several flats of impatiens and begonias that need to be planted.

REV, be safe in your travels. If I can get my hands on a mashed penny, I'll send it to you. Pappa bear, it was good to hear from you. Wish you could make it to the porch more often. She's uniquely qualified, being first of all very intelligent and has a wealth of life experience on which to draw. She's a Lt. Cmdr. in the Naval Reserves, has been deployed to many hot spots in the world over the years, most recently in Darfur as I recall, though I could be mistaken. She was on one of our Mongolian missions, and was a very valuable member of the team there, as she's a highly qualified and capable nurse. She wrote for our local newspaper for a while, but now confines her public writing to her blog. Comments are invited (naturally, I have to get my two cents' worth in now and then) and she allows another blogger to share her blogspot about once a week. He's an acerbic, negative liberal, and I think she just allows him to do guest spots for the contrast! Anyway, here's the address. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys some lively social and political commentary. She is fearless, no topic has intimidated her yet, to my knowledge. Check it out!

I'm tuckered out. Cooked a big dinner tonight with chicken fried steak, real mashed taters and cream gravy, asparagus, cream corn and sweet tea and sweet cantaloupe for dessert. It was great but cleaning up was a bummer. I only fry food about twice a year and I just hate the greasy mess! I'm sitting here now with my stomach sticking out like a bullfrog.

Guess I will roll on into the bedroom and do a bit of reading. The kids are sleeping peacefully and hubby is studying his sunday school lesson for in the morning...I love the peace and quiet.

May 25, 2008 - Msg 62998: Hey, Boo. I know what you mean about the mess from frying, or from cooking in general, for that matter. When the kids were still at home, I used to fry quite a bit - round steak, pork chops, chicken, whatever. Dale loved it, and there was always gravy. I think that was his favorite part.

About the cleaning up, though - I have a hard and fast rule, and I stick to it. As each cooking utensil is emptied for serving, it gets washed. I put my dishwashing liquid in an old trigger bottle, and the skillet or pot goes to the sink and gets a squirt of soap and a splash of hot water. A quick swish with a dishcloth or scrubby and a hot water rinse, and into the drainer it goes. By the time the meal is finished, the pots have drained dry and can be put away, and my family all knows to take their dishes with them when they leave the table, rinse them out and put them in the sink. I prefer to load my dishwasher myself, as I know exactly how things should be placed for the most effective washing. Cleanup after a meal takes less than ten minutes. I always wipe the stove and counters down before I sit down to eat. I can't enjoy a meal with a big stack of dirty pots and a messy counter staring at me. I try not to be compulsive about it, but I really do try to do it that way, as the meal is more pleasant for everyone. Maybe if we were eating in the dining room and couldn't see the dirty kitchen, it would be different.

Well, that's my little OCD quirk, so now you know. I guess everyone has something. Ha! I just thought about it - I can sit there with my bare feet under the table, but the pots have to be clean! What do you think of that, Me-They?

May 25, 2008 - Msg 63000: I understand completely and I usually do the same thing and wash as I go, but last night Sean and Bruce had been out working on the homestead, mowing and such and they came home hungry as bears and I was rushing to get it on the table. I had to smile when you mentioned loading the dishwasher..I am challenged in that area. This dishwasher we have now is made funny and I just can't seem to get them loaded easily, although when my mom-in-law is visiting, it looks much better. I guess I need to take lessons from her. I got an email from her today and the pup we gave her is just thriving. She adores him and he adores her. She says he is stuck to her like glue and to help with the separation anxiety she took an old house dress that she had worn and put it in his bed and that seems to help. He doesn't have accidents in the house, either. Hooray! I can't wait for her to come for a weekend so I can see him again. She goes to one of those "Cowboy" churches and it is in a barn-like structure and people actually bring their dogs with them to church, so it is probably a matter of time before Gizmo is a regular church member.

Speaking of...I need to get ready for preachin'. Looks like it might rain today, which would be a welcome relief after the heat yesterday! We are finally growing patches of grass on the homestead (Bermuda) and I am always watching for rain now. It is looking so nice out there...not beautiful and lush like Me-They's place, but beautiful in rustic-sort of way. The trees are growing and things are getting green and the new fence is almost finished. Poor Bruce has been working so hard on everything. He had selected someone to do the foundation plan for the house and the guy went out of business so he had to find another one and now comes the job of finding the right subs. He has really done his homework made many contacts and is now a close, personal friend of the local business inspector, he.

May 25, 2008 - Msg 63010: Ok, I'm back, cooler and cleaner. 92 degrees at 7:10 pm, and it's not even June yet. I think I'll skip July and August somehow.

What is it about that SPCA commercial, where Sarah McLachlan sings that haunting song? Starr just hates it! It breaks my heart too, but what is it that she's picking up on? At the sound of the first piano chord, she doesn't just bark from wherever she is, she runs in there and watches the TV screen, and barks at the images! It's like she knows that something isn't right about those poor little abused dogs and cats they show. I agree with her, every time I see it, I want to get the people who did those terrible things and put them under a jail somewhere. Still, how could a ten-month-old puppy understand what she's seeing on that screen? It just must be Sarah's song, but yet, Starr insists on seeing the TV. Who knows what is felt in that little heart, or goes on in that tiny head?

Thanks for the burger, Spot, and thanks for remembering I like mine rare. Never did see any point in well-done beef. Might as well just eat the briquets, it's cheaper and tastes about the same.

May 26, 2008 - Msg 63012: Good morning, everyone. What are your plans for this Memorial Day? Personally, I'll be leaving for work at 6:30 this evening. I won't be going anywhere or doing anything special. Oh well, that's okay. It's a day for remembering, and I can do that without leaving the house.

Anybody like hydrangeas? I planted one of those new "Endless Summer" varieties a couple of years ago, and am glad I did. It piddled along last year, bloomed a couple of times, but was a small bush with small blooms. This year, it has come on strong. It's now about three feet tall, has spread at least four feet, and is covered with deep pink, softball sized blooms, some even larger. It's lovely. And theoretically, it will bloom most of the summer. We shall see. I have to read up on it, when and if it should be pruned, all that stuff. I know it blooms on second-year wood, so pruning can be dicey. Sure is a pretty thing.

A plant came up in one of my flowerbeds, actually two of them about two feet apart. I couldn't identify it, so I let it come on. I often plant things and forget them (like a squirrel) so I'm careful about what I pull up. This thing looked like a cultivar of some sort, so I left it to grow. Well, it's now higher than my head, hugely branched, and I can tell by the smell it's nothing but a stinky old weed! Not sure what it is, but it's a weed. It finally bloomed, with tiny pannicles of 1/8" white, tacky little flowers, no fragrance at all - yep, it's a weed! My landscaper friend laughed at me last week, the weasel. I had left the thing to remind me to remember what I plant and where, but I guess I'll pull the ugly thing up now. If I can, that is. The roots probably go to China by now.

Even though the holiday was created to remember those lost in the service of our country, I guess we all find ourselves remembering all our lost loved ones on this day. I think of my Dale, and both my parents, and certainly this poem of yours calls to my mind my little lost grandson. I do wonder who he would have been - he would be nearly six now. And what would he have named his babies? Memories...

I was supposed to work tonight, but the hospital called and offered me the night off, so I took it, though I may have to go in at eleven. Either way, I'll enjoy a quiet evening here, just me and little Starr. She has no memories of any losses, but she'll share mine, I guess. --Romeena
May 26, 2008 - Msg 63016: Hey Y'all- just checking in to say I'm back home at my rock,safe and sound. Rev, believe it or not,I was in Pigeon Forge the same day you were! Wish we could've gotten together,but I was on a shuttle bus stopover only-couldn't get off to do any sight-seeing or visiting. Guess I was close to Big Maude too.Shoot,we should've had a party or something! Oh well.. I think Rev and I can perhaps meet up one day here in SC,since we live only about an hour or so from each other!
I'm tired and rambling,and have TONS of things to do around here,so I'll say goodnight and love to all.

May 27, 2008 - Msg 63017: Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day weekend. We didn't do too much. The wife left Sunday for Hawaii. Kai and I did buy a flag and displayed it outside the house. We went to late church service on Sunday since I worked in the morning, and it was a sometimes somber service, appropriate for what the Holiday was about. Today Kai mentioned that she didn't mind "boring" church last night, and it made her feel different than when she goes to junior church and different than the times I took her to adult church before. She then said she felt "weird", like if she had gotten "her knee slammed in a door or something".
I don't really know what she meant by that, but I can say that she is one deep kid, when she is not being silly, of course.:) But she wasn't being silly here. She did laugh at her analogy though.
I told her that it was good that she was feeling different about it, as that feeling was probably the Holy Spirit coming down into her.
She just seems to "get it", even when I haven't explained something too much. Sometimes it just amazes me at how earnest she can be about things. For a 7 year old.

My wife called me today and said she was spending alot of time with her Grandma at her new hospital, whom she says is getting better.
I said "what? Getting better?"
This is the same Grandma whom the doctors at the other hospital said wasn't going to make it after her brain aneurism. They even removed her feeding tubes and she is still getting better.
My wife says that even though the doctors "poo-pooed" her Grandma's movements as just "nerves" and saying she is non-responsive, my wife says that yes, she IS responding to them, and that is why the family is visiting her so much.

May 27, 2008 - Msg 63018: Hey, Sterling. Just FYI, I was barely eight when I accepted Christ as my Savior. Did I understand everything that was involved in that decision? Of course not, but I knew God loved me, and I loved Him back, and I knew I sometimes did things I shouldn't, but that He would forgive me, just like my daddy did. So, in simple faith, "as a little child", I took His hand. Then came Christian growth, which is, of course, a lifelong process. So don't be surprised at what Kai seems to grasp. She's a smart little kid, she has been raised with love, and for her to grasp the love of God is not surprising at all. Just answer her questions as simply as you can, and continue to give her food for thought, as you mentioned above. The Holy Spirit will take it from there.

Regarding your wife's grandmother, time will tell. Doctors and nurses naturally take a somewhat detached, more clinical approach to what they see, and their experience is telling them that the patient's activity is reflexive. Families know the patient much better, and on some occasions can see beyond the clinical picture and recognize some obscure movement as being deliberate.

It can work in reverse, too. When my own mother had surgery to replace the mitral valve in her heart, I knew something was wrong from the moment she regained consciousness afterward. Three weeks post op, I took her back to the doctor, insisting he evaluate her. He was not well known to me, and he dismissed my comments by saying "Well, she just had heart surgery, do you expect her to get up and go shopping?" I wanted to smack him. I took her home, and a week later, took her back again because her behavior was so erratic and atypical for her. That time, he acknowledged that something was wrong, put her in the hospital and tests showed that she had suffered a stroke, quite possibly during the surgery. She lived two weeks after that. The doctor did have the grace to apologize and say that he should have listened to me. However, we both knew it wouldn't have altered the outcome, so I accepted his apology and we parted friends. Perhaps he learned something.

This is why medicine is classified more as an art, than as a science. It's both, but it is an art most of all. It's inexact, there are few absolutes, if any. There will always be the patient who will break all the rules and prove you wrong, one way or the other.

Good to hear from you, Sterling. Great about Kai, she is a sweetheart and I am so thankful that she has parents who love her and teach her about the Lord. I am praying for your job situation and for your wife and her family, as well.

Bible study at the rehab went well last night. The girl "Christine" who was causing all the trouble was there as usual and was pretty well behaved. After class she handed me a copy of her life story that she had written and told me she wanted to give to me so I could use it help others after she was gone. She said that she had finally figured out why she was there and it had been because she was able to help others. She also said, though, that when she got out, she knew she would go back and get high. She is has been smoking dope since she was 8 and shooting up since she was 11. God help her and so many others like her that we see in that facility. Please don't stop praying for the work that God is doing among them. They need it so badly.

Think I will finish my coffee. Lots to do today (and all week, really). The laundry awaits!

May 27, 2008 - Msg 63023: Oh, and good morning, everyone. Boo, that's just heartbreaking about Christine, especially since I know she represents so many others with similar stories. Smoking dope since 8, shooting since 11 - God, and only God, can get that child off the stuff. There is no rehab program on the face of this earth that can accomplish it alone. At least she sees the problem - that's more than can be said for most addicts. We delivered a girl a few weeks ago who was high when she came in and smelled of alcohol as well, admitted to drug use throughout the pregnancy, and tested positive for three different drugs at the time of admission. The baby was born with several abnormalities as well as testing positive for drugs, and of course CPS was called and took custody of it. The girl sneaked out twice and went downstairs, came back grinning and glassy-eyed. Then when she finally realized her baby had problems, she wanted to sue the doctor who delivered it. Never mind that the first time he saw her was in the delivery room - according to her, it was all his fault. You cannot reason with a mind that far gone. Pitiful.

Well, my landscaper friend is coming in about an hour to finish up the projects in the yard. The sky looks like lead, and it could clabber up and rain at any moment, but we're going ahead. All the beds need compost, there are several flats of color to be planted, a rosebush and several groundcover crape myrtles to be transplanted to my neighbor's yard, and some pruning to do. If it rains, I guess we'll just keep working, as long as there's no lightning. I've been wet before, always seems to get dry eventually. (heehee)

Dr. P, prayers for your FIL. He's at a rough patch in his road right now. My parents were married 63 years when my mom passed. My dad handled it beautifully. I know he missed her terribly, but he kept his head high and went on alone, to the best of his ability. He was in the early stages of Alzheimer's when she died, though, and after a year it became clear he couldn't live alone any longer. By his own choice, he went to an assisted living facility near my home, and seemed reasonably happy there. His one hope and dream was to pass on and go to heaven "to be with the Lord and my Mary." And on Father's Day of 2003, he got to do just that. I often picture that reunion in my mind, and it gives me a great deal of joy.

Well, gotta get some clothes on before Joe gets here - I'm sitting around here in my gowntail right now! Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

So sorry about your mother-in-law, Dr P. Prayers for your FIL, bless his heart. I remember a story I heard once from an author named Tony Compolo. He was using it when speaking to college kids about what real love is. He said he knew of a man who was 80 and his bride of 60 years went to be with the Lord. After her funeral, he was sitting on the front porch with his two sons and he suddenly asked them to take him back to the cemetery. There was something he needed to say to their mom. They took him and stood back a ways while he stood over her grave. He said to her, "It happened just the way I always prayed it would, Honey. You went first." He knew the pain of being apart would be so difficult that he wanted to bear that pain of seperation instead of his dear wife. He knew she went to be with the Lord and that he would see her again in time. That is real love.
