Speaking of in-laws, well, I think I told you all about my FIL having lung cancer and my wife going over to help him out with his daily chores and such. She wasn't supposed to go over again until the end of May, but as circumstances would have it, just the other day she learned that her Grandma(her dad's mom) had an aneurism and isn't expected to make it, as it is not reversable. So this morning before work I drove her to where an airport shuttle could pick her up, and she is over in Hawaii again for a week.
When it rains it pours, huh.
It's just weird because when I heard of my FIL's condition, I thought about that old sentiment, that no parent wants to see their child die before they do, and I thought that's what was going to happen. But it doesn't look that way now.
And this is a lady who was so full of life and vigor for a lady in her late 70's or 80's(don't know exactly right off). She was part of a little Japanese(no pun intended) dance group with her friends, and every morning she would get up at 5 am and walk 10 miles. My wife said she went with her once and she couldn't keep up to her. And this is when my wife was younger.

Sad. She was a nice lady.

On a less serious note, we had one of those digital receivers installed for our cable recently, and you know how when you change the channel it will bring up that little bar that tells you what the show is, and it gives you a summary of the episode? Well, I was watching The Beverly Hillbillies the other day, and I noticed that before the summary, it said "Repeat".




Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, really? It also gives the year of the show, 1964. I would think it's a repeat. I don't think they are making too many first run episodes of those old shows anymore. ;)

I slept this morning for about three hours after I got home from work, then got up and went out to lunch with Eloise. We hadn't done any mousing around in about three weeks, what with my bronchitis and her having to go out of town due to a death in the family. We're usually together at least two days a week - I was missing her! She's such a good friend, and we have so much fun. We had a good lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant, then prowled a couple of discount stores. I got a shoulder bag designed to carry little Starr - it has a little hole for her head to stick out! It's in gold-finished leather, is really cute, and was marked down to almost nothing. Now if I can just get the poor little thing over her carsickness problem.....

Well, I think I'll go read the paper, cuddle the little furkid, and then head for bed. Eloise is coming over tomorrow to cut some flowers from the yard, to decorate a table for a party. I hope some more open up, all this cloudiness we've had has kept things from blooming, especially the roses. Still, we should be able to find plenty. There are a couple of stargazer lilies about to open, they'll anchor a nice bouquet. The stargazers in the middle, some roses around them, and some clematis vine with those beautiful purple blooms, to trail over the sides. Add some iris foliage for interest, and we should have a winner.

Been busy at work the past few days and since I usually post from work, I have not been here much. Seems like I stay busy at home in the evenings and usually do not even sit down at the computer. We have 1 "community" computer in the family and it is usually occupied by the kids or my husband.

Boo, you are on target about the teen aged girls cutting issue. It is an emotional related behavior. We usually don't see cutting behaviors in males but it does occur. Can be difficult to treat because it is of course accompanied by other problems that you have to address. In some kids it almost becomes a type addiction.

a cool cloudy morning here with rain expected the next few days.

my son has his junior prom this week end, so prayers please for things to go safely and that he has fun. He is going with a group of friends rather than taking a date. His big test is also on Monday.

Hazel, I forwarded that email video to a lot of people, and alreqady got an answer back from a cousin. He's my age, a rough-cut old country boy, who started his working life as a bricklayer's hod carrier, and ended up owning his own construction company, building schools and shopping centers. He's leathery outside and a marshmallow inside, and I knew he'd love that video. His response? "Would it not be great if the world could work in harmony that?" My cousin, the philosopher. Who knew? Thanks again.

Yesterday was one for the books.

My 83 year old mother called me at 10:00 in the morning speaking incoherenty that she had an accident. She handed over the cell phone to an officer who told me where she was. Luckily she was only 1 mile away and I got on the scene in about 5 minutes. She had turned in to another drivers lane to go into the grocery store and he hit her drivers side. She was ticket for illegal turn. The other driver was okay, standing around and joking and didn't act litigious. I was very worried about mom, she was hyper-ventilating and had chest pains from the seat belt. She of course made excuses not to go to the hospital, I told the officers to call the ambulance. We went to the hospital emergency room and she was treated and was released to go home that afternoon. She had chest pains from the accident and leg pain. She is doing much better this morning and I am making her rest.

May 09, 2008 - Msg 62645: Her vehicle's passenger side panel was damaged and little on the right side front panel. She has a solid amount of ins. being a homeowner and she will have no out of pocket expenses.

I have sold and serviced Auto Ins. for the past 9 years and yesterday I dealt with both of her ins. companies, investigators etc.... My mother doesn't know like most people the ropes of the process. Thank God she has a large local ins. company that handles all her home, medical and car ins. needs and she is a seasoned bundled policy holder with nothing on her driving record and no claims. This local ins. company is a Godsend they are bending over backwards to make us happy.

May 09, 2008 - Msg 62646: The problem of course is the auto ins. company who holds her policy, MET-LIFE wants to total her vehicle and it doesn't have any engine damage and only damage on the passenger side and the vehicle is in wonderfull shape. Living in a small city of 50,000 we know alot of people and the guy who owns the wrecker service called and said the adjuster was just there and he was going to total mother's car and to just let us know not to let them mess with us.

The ins. company will want to give us the Kelly Blue Book value of her 1995 Toyota Camry and not fix it. They will sell it to a salvage dealer for more than the blue book value. Will do my research for mom and of course no rental cars are available until Monday. Thank God no one was hurt and we will get through the minefield. Disappointed with MET-LIFE. I am on Medical Leave with one of the top four companies in America and we treat our customers much better. I know everyone has a story about how ins. companies have given them bad service and the Web is full of sites just for this venting process. The local company said they have gotten alot of complaints since MET-LIFE moved their operations from Ruston La. to the Dreaded, Dallas Texas.

Do you think this a wake-up call regarding your mother's ability to drive or just one of those things that can happen to any of us in a moment of poor judgement? Anyway, prayers to cover both.

I can't imagine an ins*rance company not being anything but helpful ;). (And, while we're near the subject, regarding ins*rance companies, I have to say that they are socialized medicine's best argument. While I'm not on the socialized medicine bandwagon, sometimes I feel like jumping on just to spite the health ins*rance companies.)

MDC: I also have heard that some geologists are saying that at current usage levels there may be less than 100 years of oil left, period. I couldn't tell you who's right and who's smokin' crack, but I'm pretty sure we probably should be hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. There are many chicken littles out there, but there are just as many ostrichs, if you get my drift. Instead of more drilling, perhaps its finally time to cut back and stop wating what we've got. Being economical and frugal used to be a part of our national pride.

That puts me onto something I often wonder about...We Christians can frequently be heard going on and on about not wanting to be so materialistic. But, when it comes to the fuel for our materialism--things like petroleum--heaven forbid someone try to take away our SUV. I don't expect anyone to sleep in the cold, or give up their job, but does anyone else see a disconnect here? Why are we less likely to decry wastefulness than crank up our air conditioners so far we have to put on a sweater in July?

Okay, I guess that's my moulage du jour. What can I say, the tag on my shorts are rubbing me wrong.

She does not drive safely at her age and should not be behind the wheel. I brought the subject up this morning and she said he she can not drive she will sell her house and move to the nursing home. "If I can not drive, I might as well as move to the nursing home", was her exact quote.

SPOT: I did have some leftover crawfish tails and made crawfish omeletes this morning with Mexican Jalisco cheese and Texas 10/14 Onions.

Well, I have to start looking for another job. A couple weeks ago, my manager told me that they were going to move me to the dairy dept. Why? Because the guy I replaced(who moved over to dairy on his own accord) in the meat dept wants his old job back.

Well, I wasn't that upset about it at the time, but as time went on it kind of gnawed at me. I had been knocked out of a job before(due to legal discrimination against non-Indian folk when I worked for the Ho-Chunk nation), and it is not a good feeling. You don't feel very important.

The last straw was the other day when we were supposed to have a dept meeting. I went upstairs to the conference room, only to be told that since I was going over to dairy I should just take care of the meat dept while they were in the meeting. The guy who is taking my place was there though, and he isn't even back in meat yet.
I don't really care about missing the meeting, but it just rubbed me the wrong way.
At the insur@nce firm I worked at before, we used to have meetings every week, and sometimes even more often than that, and they were the biggest wastes of time I had ever seen. Things that could have been stated in a memo or something.
We could have been back at our desks working, but instead we just sat around for an hour and talked about work. And it was always about the same stuff every time.

So yeah, today I went in and talked to the store manager and gave my notice. I did tell him it was not a notice for a specific date, but I would stay there in the meat dept for as long as my meat manager needed me, as I didn't want to leave him hanging with nobody there yet.
The store manager asked if I could stay until around the first week of June(because that's when he supposes the new dairy manager they are training now will be ready), and I said no problem.
So that will give me a little more time to find another, and hopefully better, job.
The store manager said that he would be sorry to lose me, and that moving me to dairy was less about this other guy moving to meat and more about moving me to dairy because I had some experience before in a dairy dept, and because of that, the new dairy manager was looking forward to working with me, but I don't think I really buy that. I had experience working in a meat dept before as well.

So, it's back to writing applications and cover letters for my resume. Man, I hate doing that stuff.


Me-They, I heard about that government taking the supplies. I think that is just despicable! When your people are suffering and they take the stuff that is going to help them.

Seriously thought, Sterling, last night during my prayer time I was praying for you and your family, specifically about Kai attending Christian school and asking the Lord to provide the means if it is His will. Maybe He has a better, more profitable job out there for you. That's what I am hoping anyways. Prayers continue (you are listed in my prayer journal).

Where's Homemaker?? I wanted to tell her about some new goats I saw today near the homestead. Talk about beauties! They looked like something out of a Heidi movie. Like the kind you see on the Swiss Alps. They were the biggest goats I have ever seen and had long-ish hair and these big horns that curled back toward their necks. Some were brown and white and some mostly black. I stopped the car just to look at them.

Well, better get going. Hubby and I have a date tonight...

I did come across some Myotonic goats, which I actually saw once in San Marcos, TX on a ranch and, son of a gun, they really fall over like they were dead when they got scared. I never saw anything like it. They took off running, their legs began to stiffen up and they just fell over on their sides. Have you ever seen them before?

May 09, 2008 - Msg 62664: Good afternoon, everyone. This is coming to you from my newly souped-up computer. It was literally starving for memory and I had two 512 chips added. It's pretty well-fed now, I'll tell you! I click, it jumps! It had reached a point where doing a jigsaw puzzle online was impossible. I'd click on a piece and move the cursor to move the piece. The cursor would move, but the puzzle piece would just sit there, and finally would move across the screen in little fits and starts, could take up to ten seconds to reposition one piece. Not acceptable.

Sterling, it sounds like God is getting you out of a going-nowhere job, so likely He has something a lot better in mind for you. When you think about, you probably really don't want to work for a company that will treat employees that shabbily. Trust God and pass out resumes.

Boo, the goats you mentioned are commonly called "fainting goats" because they do seem to faint, though that's not really what happens. As you noted, it's more a matter of their muscles locking up when they're frightened or excited. I'm sure homemaker can shed a great deal more light on the subject. It really is interesting.

Dud, I know what you're going through. My dad finally had to quit driving at about 83, and it was hard for him, but bless his sweet little heart, he tried to make it easy for me. With tears in his eyes, he handed me his keys, and said, "I guess we both know this is best. I don't want to hurt anyone, and I'm afraid I might." That about did me in. So, from that day forth, I became his chauffeur, and I tried very hard never to let it appear that it was inconveniencing me in the least, because that would have hurt him so much. Actually, we had a lot of fun on our jaunts together. I got lost and drove about 30 miles out of the way, and we just laughed about it. Once I had to stop on the roadside and let him visit the bushes because he couldn't wait for a gas station, and he cautioned me not to "peek", then just laughed as though he had made a great joke.

Part of his trouble with driving was very strange, and he described it perfectly. He said his mind remembered that cars didn't have clutches anymore, but his feet had forgotten. So, he would have his right foot on the gas, and his left on the brake, thinking he was on a clutch. Naturally, the car resented this just a bit. He would try to keep that left foot still, and he just couldn't do it. Strange.

Well, I think I'll go sit down with my little Starr and give her some cuddle time. I've been gone most of the day and the poor little thing has been confined to the bathroom, which she just hates. It's really a tough life - about 30 sq ft, plenty of food, water, toys, cuddle bed, piddle pad, a/c and the TV on in the next room for company. Still, she just hates being left alone, so now that I'm home, she expects some make-up time. I can do that.

Asa, Big Maude, & Sterling-Ya'll flattery me. But, I'm afraid there are a couple of things in my past that would be too repugnant for some people to accept. In 1983 I stood in line outside a TicketTron office all night to buy tickets to a David Bowie concert and, in, or around, 1972 I developed an addiction to mayonnaise, a problem I struggle with to this very day. Although, standing outside all night in Buffalo, NY could be spun as a testament to my bravery. For most of my life Buffalo has resembled "wartime Berlin."

Romeena & Dud- I can relate to both of your posts. My Mom is 83 and will probably never drive again. We have discussed this with her and it was more or less her idea. Dud, glad to hear your Mom is recovering well.

Sterling-I agree with Romeena, keep your eyes and heart open. I can relate to your other job loss, I lost a job one time before I was actually hired. Soon after I graduated from college I was offered a job as a probation officer. I was given a tour of the place, introduced to my "coworkers" and was even shown "my office." Then ... three days before I was to start I was told they had decided to "go in another direction." I was numb. I tried to ask a couple of question but that was that. Turns out it was an Affirmative Action situation, I was too white and too male for the job.

Me-They I think the only people sticking their heads in the sand are those who won't let us drill or refine our own oil. Government will never be able to move us to an alternative fuel, the market will, when it is time. Just think what the government is asking the oil executives to do, essentially they are asking the oil companies to put themselves out of business. Could you folks please pay for the development of some other energy form? That's how upside down Washington is. Of course that's what is fashionable these days, attacking successful business'.

Wow, that is a lot of typing for a hunt and peck guy.

It's cloudy and a bit drizzly here today. Wonder what it's like about a hundred miles south of here, for the big wedding? I hope it's pretty down there, every bride deserves a pretty day for her wedding.

Well, gotta run. I'm being scolded, and must go do something about it. There is a ticked-off little squirrel sitting in the tree outside my window, peering in at me and he's upset. He keeps stomping his litle front feet, and his tail is twirling like a propeller. His problem is that there is no food in the feeders, and he has come to expect some, so he's telling me about it. No problem, I have corn, sunflower seed, birdseed, peanuts, some dry bread and an aging apple, all of which will last about five minutes when put out on the stones. Birds are perched all around as well, waiting for breakfast. Spoiled little things!

May 10, 2008 - Msg 62672: Ro, that is so sad about your dad having to hand over the keys. It must have hurt you to have to do that. I know I have my share of pain and guilt dealing my parents. Sometimes I feel absolutely paralyzed with fear. I want to get closer to them but everytime I even hug them I want to burst into tears. To see them the way they are now is very painful. I know for their sake, I need to just be brave and spend time with them.

I have an important prayer request and my friends here on the porch are the first ones I thought about. Some of you may remember a few years ago a good friend of mine dropped in on the porch a few times and called himself "Boo-Hoo"? He is my adopted brother (in a spiritual sense) and has been one of my dearest friends for nearly 25 years now. I had not heard from him a few months and wasn't able to get him when I called. Well, the other night I had a very bad dream about him and tried calling again. He was in terrible shape and talking about suicide. He has been drinking to try to escape his pain and lonliness and has gotten to the point that he doesn't want to fight anymore. I feel so helpless and begged him to check himself into detox. He told me he already made arrangements to do that and had given all of his important papers, phone numbers, etc. to another friend. I am just so concerned because I have been worried that he would take his life for years now, due to his depression. I have tried for years to get him to get help to no avail and finally had to give up and back off. I love him so much and to me, he is family. It breaks my heart to hear his voice and hear him crying and not be able to do anything. Please pray with me, that he will get the help he needs and that the Lord will bring healing to him.

May 10, 2008 - Msg 62673: Oh, Boo, that's just awful about your friend. It seems so unfair that there are so many people in so much pain, and the world just goes right on. I wish I had some help to offer, but all I can think of is to pray for him. And it may be that he's at a point now where you need to apply a significant layer of "Jewish mother" guilt. Tell him that you love him, and let him know how much it would hurt you if he were to harm himself, to say nothing of how it would grieve our Lord. It can't hurt, and it might help.

I nearly had a wreck today, and I would have been at fault, along with a bunch of other drivers. I was on the freeway, driving past the hospital where I work, when I became aware of something hovering and blowing around, about thirty feet above the roadway. It was a hawk, one of several who hang out on the roof of the hospital, and he was after a smaller bird, probably a starling. The starling was darting this way and that, trying to evade the hawk, and the hawk just had his wings spread like a parachute, hanging in the air above the starling. He'd flap a little to stay up with the smaller bird, then hover above him again. Everyone on the road was watching this display and it's a wonder we didn't all run into each other. Finally my car passed beneath the birds, and I never knew whether the hawk caught the little bird or not, thank goodness. I know it's nature, and the hawk has to eat, but it still seems so cruel.

There's a hawk that hangs out around my house as well, and once he just fell from the sky and snagged a pigeon off the ground, not fifteen feet from where I was standing. He flew away with that big fat pigeon flapping and struggling, but the hawk held on. That's why I don't allow Starr out there unless I'm carrying her. That dang bird could carry her off, and I guess I'd just lose my mind. I know I'd be buying a shotgun.

Boo, all I can say is just love your parents, use humor wherever you can, and enjoy this phase of their lives as you have enjoyed everything else before now. If there are hurts, and I know there are some, put them aside and move on. I think you've done that, actually. Live in the moment, don't think about tomorrow, because it may or may not come for them. If it does, then enjoy it too. If it doesn't, at least you'll know you got all the joy you could get out of their lives while you had the chance. And yes, spend time with them. I spent a lot of time with mine, but looking back now, I wish it had been more. Once they're gone, there's no going back, no do-overs. My mom has been gone nine years now, and I still catch myself reaching for the phone, or feeling like I should be buying flowers for her for tomorrow. So call, visit, buy little gifts, do little favors, laugh with them, take them places, or just sit and watch TV with them. Just be there. You will be very glad you did.

Wow,Ro,what you said about parents is absolutely beautiful.. and so true. Thank you. You know,I haven't told y'all that things got much better between me & my mom a few months ago. Don't know why I didn't mention it-guess I didn't want to go into the entire long story.Anyway,she quit all that nastiness & got off of a lot of her meds.I know she hurt me,remember the ugly things she said,but like Ro said,put them aside and move on. My sister is even much better- we can tolerate each other & be civil.Amazing! Life's too short and family is important. Thank you again,Ro for your wisdom.

Also, thank you for your concern for my friend (I did give him the guilt treatment this morning...even boo-hoo'd on the phone). Maybe it was good for him to be reminded how much people care about him. He did ask if I would come to the hospital to see him while he was in detox, so I think he is sincere about getting help, finally.

My mom-in-law is helping, though, and she even cleaned out my refrigerator for me...score! That kind of thing makes this over-worked housewife very happy. Did any of you see on the news how they determined that a stay-at-home mom should make like 116,000 a year? I think that figure is way low if you consider, no vacation or weekends off and 24 hour shifts...Let's hear it for Moms.

Got laundry going and am out of clean towels...I thought I was doing a smart thing when I only bought 2 towels for each member of the family (that's all there is room for in this apartment), but now I am beginning to rethink the wisdom of that decision...hehe.

Wish we could all slow down for a concert under the stars in the Mayberry of our Minds...oooo, how poetic.

May 10, 2008 - Msg 62678: I have so many towels (I hit a fantastic sale) in each bathroom that I could go months without doing laundry, especially since there's only me. However, after buying all those pretty, colorful towels, I realized I had made one small mistake. Daughters and granddaughter can ruin a washcloth pretty quick, using it to wash off makeup. Bleaching removes the makeup, but fades the washcloth. So, I hit another sale and bought two dozen snow white washcloths, and when company is coming, I stack about six of them on the counter next to each sink. They can get makeup on them and I don't care, because I just bleach the daylights out of them and they're white again. We get too soon old, and too late smart. --Romeena

Ro, another great thing about white washcloths/towels, is that bleach won't ruin them. Seems like someone is always using one of my good washcloths to clean something with bleach!

I thought of all of you last night. We had a great evening sitting and watching some TAGS DVDs with the kids and Mom-in-law. She had never seen the Loaded Goat ep and we laughed our heads off at that thing. I had never watched it so closely before but that episode is a comedic masterpiece, in my opinion. Hilarious stuff and before we turned that ep on, my m-in-law said to Sean, "Wait, don't start it yet, Grandma has to take a gas pill." (seriously). Well, Sean and I looked at each other and I said, "Grandma has to take a gas pill...she's a loaded goat". Sean got hysterical. Anyway, it was really enjoyable. Gotta love that TAGS.

Oh, guess what? I made homemade sweet cornbread yesterday from scratch. I had never done that (always used a mix). Boy, it was so good we ate it for dessert yesterday. We are going to have us a feast today. I cooked a ham and a broccoli-rice and cheese casserole and mom-in-law is putting smothered steak in the crock pot. We also are having butternut squash cooked with butter and brown sugar, buttered corn, sweet cornbread, tea and cheesecake for dessert. Ya'll coming over?
