I am going to the grocery store to buy those expensive groceries. If I vote for Hillary and the BAMA in November, I know I will pay less. They promised me they will do something about it. I am going to buy an eye of the round beef roast for my 83 mother and cook it Cajun Dumb Cooking Style. Cajun Dumb Style means you can cook this way under the influence. This consist of a room temp. roast, seasoned with studded Shallots Slivers, Garlic Slivers, Tony C's Cajun seasonings and Dusted with with seasoned Flour. Your oven has to be temperature caliburiated correctly or this will not work. If the over is not right it will turn out not cooked or burnt. Pre-heat oven to 500 degrees and stick roast in for 5 minutes a pound for a perfectly pink roast. If you like it cooked more well done, leave it in around 6/12 to 7 minutes per pound. Keep the oven shut for the next 2 hours, if you have youg'uns put a sign on the oven to "Not Open Under Penalty" for it will make the kitchen smell wonderful. Take it out and it will be ready to slice, make a great mushroom onion brown gravy, Louisiana Rice and a loaf of your choice of good French Bread. I think you got a meal. While that roast is cooking you can sit back and watch Andy or read a book.

Possum, I can't imagine being so close to Secretariat. I think I'd just melt into a puddle, just being in the same county. It is a dream of mine, one that will likely never be realized, to actually sit aboard a thoroughbred, and maybe ease him around the track a time or two. I've ridden most of my life, especially in my younger days, and I've been on some good horses, but nothing like those high-stepping beauties. My husband once joked that my mansion in heaven would most surely have a paddock out back. If so, I hope Secretariat is in it. He will, of course, share that paddock with Ace, the rough-gaited companion of my teen years. I loved that horse!

It has been cloudy and gray here all day, temp around 72, and now at 4:15 it's dark enough that my landscape lights have come on! Never has turned loose and rained, though. I hope it does.

Well, I put that Nyjer thistle seed out, and haven't seen a goldfinch since! I hope they come back and find it. They are such beautiful little things. Right now, all I have out there is pigeons and some doves, and a few sparrows. Oh well, they have to eat too.

Romeena-I can't believe you mentioned Gold Finches, my daughter just snapped a picture (this weekend) of a bunch sitting at our bird feeders. She took the shot to send it to her aunt in Florida, my sister really misses those little things. If it turned out, I'll send it along to ya.

Dud-I'm right there with your critique of the Democrat Party but the GOP has been running the show most of the last 8 years and spending money as fast as anyone on the left. I think Bush Jr and Sr have done as much damage to GOP as Bubba did the DEMs. The GOP only wins when the act like Conservatives and unfortunately with the Bushes it was just an act. I know I already said this but it's good to have you back.

Thanks to OPIEMOM, I discovered the birds that built a nest on my front door wreath were indeed Finches. Such sweet little birds!

Well, I've been deeply saddened by two things: the horrible cyclone that hit Myanmar and the death of that beautiful horse, Eight Belles. It made me sick just like the injury and death of B. I really have to choke back tears. I had horses as a kid growing up out in the country in Illinois. Had some Quarter horses, Appaloosa, American Paint and a Shetland pony who was meaner than a rattlesnake. I rode quite a bit. There is nothing like a beautiful horse. I'd run out every morning before school to feed them oats, apples, and carrots. They were some of my best friends, along with my little Scotty dog, Frazier. Happy, happy childhood days.

My porch friends, it's going to be an extremely busy week for me and my family. My daughter has dress rehearsals and professional pictures, a spring choir performance at school, an art show at school, t ball, and a mother's day play on Friday at school. I'm exhausted just thinking about it!! Though, it will be so much fun and she's so excited by it all that I dare not complain!

Speaking of Mother's Day--I'm asking for a specific kind of tree this year but I don't know what it's officially called. I've heard it referred to as an "umbrella tree." It's a small tree with branches that look like draping vines that have had a bob haircut. Does that ring a bell with anyone? Drop me a message if it does!

May 05, 2008 - Msg 62560: Good evening, all. I just watched a 2-part episode of "Designing Women", and it was just so sweet. It was the one where Charlene has her baby, and while waiting at the hospital, the other girls meet Miss Minnie, a woman of 102, who is all alone in the world, having outlived her husband and all her children. It was all handled so deftly, with just enough goofiness from Bernice to keep it from getting sappy. I sat there crying at the very end, but not really sad tears, just tears for the human family, I guess. Anyway, it was well done.

Hey, my kids in Florida sent me a big old gift certificate to Wayside Gardens for Mother's Day. That's an online nursery that I order from frequently, so I'll just have a wonderful time spending that thing. This is my son who has been so terribly sick, and is still a long way from well, but is doing better, thank God. I would bet it was my DIL's idea, but I also know he would quickly second the motion. They're both very generous, and she adds the creative dimension when it comes to gift ideas. Anyway, I'm going to have fun!!

I'm feeling proud of myself. I "brokered a deal" between my other DIL's sister, who had three kittens to find homes for, and a friend who was looking for a kitten. I got the two of them together, my friend is going to take two of the kittens, and maybe all three! What a deal! The mama cat was a feral stray, my DIL's sister has taken her in, but obviously doesn't want more kittens, so has already had her spayed. Good for her! I wish more people would do that.

Well, gotta go cuddle little Starr. I've had the "soft paw" on my ankle several times, and that means "Get away from that computer and come make a lap for me." She is the most loving little thing. Oh mercy, I miss my little Plum, but this baby is so sweet, she has definitely made her own place. Still, a couple of evenings ago, I was sitting with Starr in my lap, and began to think about Sugarplum, and just broke down crying, much to my surprise. I loved that little dog so much, and we had been through so much together. God made dogs to be our companions, I'm convinced of that. For people who don't like dogs (?) He made cats, and that's wonderful, too. For those strange people who don't care for either one, all I can say is, God bless you, somehow! God is good.

May 05, 2008 - Msg 62561: The situation in Myanmar is just horrific, MDC. Prayers for those who are trying to survive the contamination and destruction. Sean and I were recently studying about Myanmar and the great missionary to China, Hudson Taylor. I just hate to hear about so many people dying that way.

I wanted to mention that our bible study at the rehab tonight went very well. The girls were much more attentive and they are asking the right questions now. It is exciting to see them "get it". Please pray for a new girl, Mary, who is 15, I think. She is probably the most beautiful child I have ever known. She has the face of a cherub but, unfortunately the body of a much more mature woman, and she has received more that her share of abuse from men. She told me tonight that she hated all men. I noticed that she has been cutting herself excessively. She must have had 40 or 50 fresh cuts on her forearms, bless her heart. She did say she had been very depressed this past week and decided to start praying and crying out to the Lord, and she is changed and doing much better. Jesus is the only one who can help this child to heal from her deep hurts.

Well, think I will spend a little time with the kids and go to bed.

May 06, 2008 - Msg 62566: Romeena, cutting isn't a new but it has become more common. Most girls who cut themselves will cut themselves on more hidden places that won't be noticed. The large majority of cutters are girls but there are also a few boys. I remember back in the 80's when I first met my friend Karen (I think I mentioned her childhood abuse by mother and father). She had scars on her forearms and after I knew her well enough, I asked her about them. She used to cut herself when she was a teen and the way she described it to me is that when her emotional pain got too severe to handle, if she cut herself, the pain of the cutting somehow blocked the emotional pain she felt for a little while. I know that girls cut for different reasons. Sometimes its out of anger, sometimes pain or even as a way of getting attention. It can become an addiction, though, just like drugs or anything else that makes the mind "feel better" but most teens stop the cutting once they reach adulthood. The immature mind of a child/teen is not always able to cope with pain in a normal way and instead of talking to someone and learning ways to deal with all of those emotions, they find release in what's called in psychological terms S.I. (or Self Injury). Interestly enough, I was recently talking with a good friend who goes to church with me. She is 45 and was s*xually abused in childhood by a family member. She told me that when she was a teen, she used to stick pins through the skin in her arms because it made her feel better somehow, so it isn't something new. I also think that with the breakdown in the family that we see today and the divorce rate, kids are hurting and so we will see more of this kind of "acting out" behavior. Anyway, that is what I know about it, for all that's worth.

Have a bad cough and sore throat today. It was worse yesterday and I stayed home from work. I figured what the heck—might as well stay home and feel better, and not infect the rest of the staff. I enjoyed having the day off, too. In fact, I think we need to go to the four day work week and have every Monday off. Do I have a second?

I don’t know what it is about those Cedarmont Kids videos, but they were/are my kids favorites and I hear the same from most people whose kids have them. I think it’s kind of the Barney phenomenon. I used to think that maybe they were sticking in some sort of subliminal messages in that show (just kidding). Every kid I knew around age 3 or 4 was just hooked on that purple dinosaur. Kind of like kiddie crack or something. Same goes for the Wiggles (STERKLING: Nora went through a huge Wiggle phase about three years ago). I know believe that kids may like cartoon and puppets and stuff, but they just love watching other little kids sing and dance. After all, that’s mostly what the Wiggles and Barney are—singing and dancing. Anyway, that’s my unedumakated opinion.

That’s for all your suggestions regarding movies for Nora. I’m gonna check some of them out. HAZEL: I’ve never heard of that Haylie Mills movie, and Nora does love those Haylie Mills movies! Most of the movies she watches are Disney movies from the 60s and 70s.

BOO: That’s a shame about Mary. I honestly don’t know what gets into people. I just for the life of me can’t comprehend how someone can abuse a kid and derive any kind of pleasure from it. Prayers for her, and you, too.

DUD: Regarding your Democratic critique the other day, I decided a long time ago that party labels have very little to do with success or failure in the Oval Office. It has more to do with strength of character, conviction, and determination to do the right thing, whether popular with your party or even the American people. Some of our greatest presidents like Lincoln made decisions that, at the time, were hated by a majority of Americans. Leaders don’t necessarily do the popular thing—they LEAD. And that means sometimes making very unpopular decisions. We’ve had great Republican presidents, like Reagan and Roosevelt, and great Democratic ones, like Roosevelt and Truman. We’ve also had stinking failures from both parties. I think if more people would vote for the man (or woman), and not the party we’d all be better off.

Regarding your weekend discussion about people who do horrible crimes, some people are just born sociopaths. Unfortunately, these people are born without empathy towards the pain of others. They literally can lash and harm with no remorse. That boy who killed his father over a cartoon sounds like a classic example. While I wholeheartedly believe that such people should be punished to the full extent of the law when they commit a crime, I also believe that they deserve our prayers. It must be very difficult to go through life like that. We all have our cross to bear—whether mental or physical—and God never promised us a rose garden here on earth. We have to make the best with what we’ve got.

May 06, 2008 - Msg 62569: Yes, Me-They, it's hard to understand, but as you said, some people have no empathy for the suffering of others and will do anything they believe they can get away with. There seems to be a certain "mindset" out there that sees children as less than human. Because they are weak and helpless, they are considered fair game, so to speak. Whether in the wild on among the civilized, predators are predators. What I just can't figure out, though, are parents who do such things to their children. I mean, if a sociopath goes out and selects a victim, that is horrible enough, but when a parent uses their own child, that is the worst. What causes a parent to use their child for their own sick purposes? It won't always be this way, though. Someday the innocent will no longer suffer, and "the lion will lay down with the lamb"...it's what keeps me from giving up and crawling into a hole somewhere.

Sometimes our efforts seem so futile but I try to remember the story of the starfish. Remember that one?...A grandpa and his young grandson are walking along the beach and they see hundreds of starfish that have washed up and are unable to get back into the sea. The grandpa is walking along and picking some of them and throwing them back in. The boy says, "Grandpa, there are so many. Why bother to throw some of them back. It won't really matter?". The grandpa responds as he tosses out another starfish, "It matters to this one". It's true. Even if you only help one person to find their way in this world, the bible tells us that one immortal soul is worth more than all the riches in the world. Be encouraged, you can make a huge difference.

I did not mean to imply that I am a shill for the Republican party. I am sick of all the politicans Democrat and Republican. I lived in Dallas with George W. as owner of the Texas Rangers and then as Govenor. He got a loan from his fat cat buddy Rusty Rose to buy the team but they did start winning for the first time. It got him the Texas Govenor's seat along with the money from his Daddy's fatcat friends.

I am just tired of the Clinton's promising everything under the sun to the American people and The Barak is following her lead. Hillary has put out the old Bill line of "I promise a 10,000 more police officers on the street to fight crime." Bill stills go around and tells people that the 10,000 figure is one of the legacies of his tenure in office. It never happend. They ended up with some training money for cities to use to train officers but not to pay there salaries. John McCain is promising some whoppers also, he knows the game. Just less promises. No one is going around telling the public that GE needs to be taxed more because they made a bigger percentage of profits than Exxon.

He started calling himself Reverend when he started hanging aroun Dr. King. All the other main people in his entourage were Reverends so Jesse started calling himself one. He did go back to the Chicago Semminary that he dropped out of and they gave him an honary doctrate. So now he is a Dr. Jesse Jackson.

Boo, you explained the cutting phenomenon very clearly. I'm pretty familiar with the scenario, but it does seem to me that we're seeing a lot more of it these days. Also, a couple of generations back, I don't recall it existing at all. Maybe it did and I just didn't know it, but in my own high school, it was unheard of. I guess it's a reflection of our times that such a thing is occurring now. I know, the "older generation" has been saying it for centuries, but it does seem that things are worse than they used to be.

I talked to my daughter and ex-wife last night. They live in Dallas and my daughter has attended a Jewish private school since the first grade. My ex grew up a Southern Baptist and she converted to Judaism a year after we broke up. My daughter is being brought up Jewish and the school, her classmates and their parents are wonderfull. I really miss going to all of her class function and the kid's birthday parties. Everyone I meet knows I am a Church of Christ person and they could care less. Best bunch of parents that I have met in that kind of setting. I really miss my daughter but taking care of my mother is a priority right now. She is starting to drive again but she is very unwell. Her older sister is having her 94th birthday next week and she still drives and volunteers 4 days a week. I plan on my mother getting to be the age and with my helping her she will have a full life in her 80's and hopefully her 90's.

Thanks again for letting me sit on the porch.

Spot: I look in the newspaper and they have a great special on trimmed brisket. I think it is time for this Louisiana boy to cook smoke some Texas Style Brisket, Jalopeno Ranch Style Beans, Louisiana Crawfish Macaroni Remoulade Salad and Mexican CornBread.

Have any of you ever owned a Chihuahua? I am feeling sorry for Erin because she is so bored her with no playmates in the area and no pets. I am thinking about a small dog for her. The problem is that Bruce doesn't want a dog inside the house, but I am thinking that if it is small enough, he won't mind. We used to have a weinie dog in the house but she piddled alot. Seems we never could get her house trained. She lives with my parents now and is my dad's best friend and NOW she is trained. Go figure.

May 06, 2008 - Msg 62584: Walmart has gotten a lot of flack over the years. I went to their pharmacy Web Site and it was in our local paper. They are offering more medicine either perscription or over the counter at lower prices. Their $4.00 per month perscriptions can now be bought at a 90 day supply rate of $10.00. My blood pressure and diabetes medications are on this list for a 90 day rate. Every little bit helps. I will save $4.00 every 3 months, my own little saving. If I still bought at Walgreens I would be paying my co-pay of $5.00 to $35.00 per month per perscription. If you don't have a pay-plan this will be a great alternative. No government interference.... Check it out.

Dud, just be careful of some of those generic RX drugs. For example, I read about people who switched from Toprol to the generic got many bad side reactions. A lot of generic brands like Ion and Sandoz are very poor grade.

Me-They I agree with your assessment of the Parties. And, I'll even accept that the Roosevelt's were great Presidents. However, what does FDR and Truman have in common with the Democrat Party of today, nothing. I can't stand it when people vote for a Party and not an idea but there is only one Party that is even close to what the Founders created, less government, individual freedom, less taxes, less regulation, few entitlements. May 07, 2008 - Msg 62592: Thanks MDC, I am going to make sure I have phone numbers from some of her little friends so I can arrange some visits during the summer and of course I will have Karen's kids with me alot and Alison is Erin's favorite person in the world (besides my sister, St. Susan...hehe). My sister is every kid's favorite. She spoils them rotten and then gives them back to the parents to deal with. Her baby granddaughter (the precious Baby Emily) just started saying a few words, and much to her mom's dismay, her favorite word is "Na-Na", which is what she calls my sister. Yesterday her mom, Amy, asked Emily if she wanted to go "Bye-bye" and Emily yelled, "Na-Na"!

MDC, I was reading an email I received from Gospel For Asia and it sounds like they may have lost 400 of their churches in the Burma region. They were hit hard but are experiencing opportunities to share the love of God with many they may not otherwise. It seems they are now caring for some orphans from a destroyed orphange and even some Buddist monks who came looking for help. The government is letting the Christians work more freely in the area because of the great need. I will forward you the email, if you like. Just let me know.

Boo, I live about 50 to 60 miles north of Lehi. Thanksgiving Point is a golf type resort that Johnny Miller built. It has many other features including a 55 acre garden spot, nice eateries, theaters and what not, but it's biggest draw is an 18 hole Championship golf course. The gardens are very nice there.

Auh2o, you guy's warming up at all? We were in the 70's yesterday. Just delightful weather after last weeks snow storms. I may be able to get some corn planted this week. Yipeeee.

Boo,Laci is fine.She only had one really bad day with the strep & that's the day we noticed she was lethargic and had a fever & swollen glands.She did have a rash pop up on her legs & feet a day or so later though.Dr. saw her again,said it wasn't the scarlet fever rash but thought it was connected to the strep germ.Rash didn't seem to bother her.I think she enjoyed having her socks and braces off for a day or so while it healed! It's pretty much gone now & Laci's doing great.Thanks for asking.

Evidently, it's pretty popular. Or maybe people just like hair that's been unwashed for months.

AFD: Glad Reagan is doing better. Veda is as cute as can be, and has a really bright personality. She is very outgoing, unlike the other two. She can be very sweet, but she enjoys getting her way too much. She's not one to take no for an answer, and when she doesn't get her way she starts shouting. The other two definitely weren't like that. We've already moved from the timeout chair to the corner. She is a little helper, though; in fact she insists on doing everything! She's a daddy's girl, though, so all is forgiven ;).

I have read some really funny and provacative bumper stickers lately (my favorite still is "I'm voting for Monica Lewinsky's ex-boyfriend's wife"), but this morning I read one that said, "Who Would Jesus Torture?" At first is teed me off, but I have to admit, it also really made me think.

MIL has taken a bad turn.She had 1 treatment and felt fine, then last Tuesday she had bad acid reflex and went to the hospital,they treated her, sent her home ,by Saturday night she had an infection in her colan,went back to hospital and now the infection has sread to other organs. It's not looking very promising.All 7 of her kids are with her and FIL. I didn't go to the hospital, I've been fighting sinus infection,but feeling better now.Well I'm going to make a bunch of food to take to FIL ,so you all take care . PEACE Dr P

Steve: I agree with you on the generic drugs to be carefull. On my Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan if I insist on the name brand I have to pay one half of the full cost if a generic brand is available unless I get documentation from my Doctor that it is not working. I have been lucky that the generics have worked for me.

Me-They I have to disagree with you regarding Abe and Teddy. There still is a very prominent "country club" wing in the GOP that sees things the TR way, John McCain comes to mind. Abe, my goodness, the GOP is still all about Abe. I have never been a member of the Republican Party, I've been a registered Conservative since I was 18 (about 11 years now, hee hee), but I think I'm switching to the Party of Lincoln this fall.
