Hello porch family....Been working outside around the house all day and I'm tired. Got a lot done though. It was such a nice day to be outside here. I took a break and just set back in my swing this afternoon with a glass of ice tea and watched the birds eat in my feeders. The bluebirds flying in and out of the bluebird houses. I just love it. Then my wife drove up and hopped out of the car carrying a big box with more feeders in it. In my kitchen window I can look out and see a little sparrow nest that has a momma bird each year. I get to watch the little egg hatch and grow. I can watch her but she can't see me. Oh our God is so good!

Yep Spot...you still can do a mean sweep job.

Well I'm gonna hit the bed a little early tonight. You all sleep good and know that I'm praying for all the porch family.

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62471: How neat, REV. I just love to watch birds! I thought about putting up some feeders on the homestead but I heard that if you put in feeders, the birds will stop eating all the bugs on your place. Don't know if that is true, but I a seldom see an insect on the propery. I do have a feeder in my backyard where I am currently living and it is hanging in the only tree back there. The birds love it because we don;t have any cats or dogs and they feel safe in the fence. I see all kinds back there but no bluebirds yet.

Busy day today...laundry, bed changing, have to put my roast in the crock pot. Bruce is coming home this evening so it's back to being a housewife. I'm glad he's coming home because he was sounding very homesick and is missing his family. He told me, "I guess I've turned into a homebody because I just want to be home with you and the kids". Bless his heart.

Well, the band concert was sort of a bust. I enjoyed what I heard of it but it was kind of boring for Erin and I ended up taking her to the lobby for the last half. Oh well, you have to try new things now and then. Erin seems to be getting more hyper. Maybe I need to change her diet. I do know that she has been getting to bed later than usual all week and she seems to be harder to control and is acting up.

Did anyone notice that Glenn Ford was on Turner Classic's all day yesterday? I didn't get to watch him, though, and I don't think my favorite of his movies was shown (Ransom).

Better get a move on...

Morning Folks

Rev-Aren't those days you can spend just puttering around the great? We also have a bunch of bird feeders here, I just love them. My girls think I'm nuts but I could watch those critters all day. A hot coffee and the morning paper or a good book (or the Good Book) and I'm out on the back porch.

Asa-We had snow here the other morning too. Enough, wouldn't ya say?

MDC-I share your concerns about the direction it looks like our country is about to take. I'm also sure that it will be short term, Socialism just doesn't work, never has. But, people love to hear the government is on the way to help out and the truth is the government is just a mechanism, a machine, a useful one at times, but it's cold and distant. If there is any hope for a higher quality of life (secular life that is) it should be left to the individual to make his/her own way.

Dud-Good to see you found your way back. Prayers for continued good health. I enjoy cooking also.

The bunco group meets here tonight, so I've got to get the food finished, the house cleaned, and (I hope) give Starr a bath. She's a little dirty-faced urchin right now, and since this will be her first time to meet some of these ladies, I want her to be at her best.

Me-They, no problem with the pictures. I have a program that resizes them in a flash, but I'm still going to sleep this morning. I'll probably work on pictures tomorrow. I have some family pictures to process as well, so will do it all at one time.

Had a great night last night, got to work with a nurse friend that I haven't worked with in a while, and we had a very quiet night, so we got to visit and catch up a lot. It happens now and then.

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62476: Morning porch, just checking in for a minute today. Hello to everyone around the porch today.

Been a busy week at work and I have been feeling a little under the weather so I have not been checking in much. Hopefully, I can get some rest this week end and will be good to go on Monday.

Weather is beautiful here today but supposed to rain tomorrow.

Been busy with the kids as well. My son started Spring Football Practice yestersday for 2 weeks and then school will be out. We have honors night for him on the 13th and honors day for my daughter on the 21st. Things are winding down for the school year rather quickly.

Please keep my son in your prayers. He has a big exam on May 12th in his AP Biology class. He has to make a certain score on the exam to get the college credit for the Advanced Placement High School course he has taken. The kids in this class have worked very hard this year and they all deserve to pass. It is my understanding that the test is about 3-4 hours long and very hard. The exam is sent off campus and graded and then they find out in the summer if they scored high enough for the college credit. Part of the exam is multiple choice and part is free response. It covers everything they have studied this year. He is very stressed about it so please say a prayer that God will give him what he needs to do his best. Thanks for your prayers.

Lunch menu will be: grilled burgers with or without cheese and all the trimmings, chips, SLAW,brownies. tea, kool aid to drink

Me-They you have a wonderful looking family. I know you are very proud of them.

You guys have a blessed day. Prayers for everyone.

MDC: I watched "Carrier" for the first time last night (episodes 9 and 10) and enjoyed them. I wish I gadn't missed the first eight, but, knowing PBS, they'll rebroadcast the heck out of them all summer. I didn't realize that Mel Gibson is executive producer of the series.

M-T- The best parrts are the middle episodes. The first and last concentratre on leaving and getting into a regular schedule, and as you saw, the last was mostly on "going-home-itis." The boyfriend/girlfriend deal was sad, and i felt so bad for that kid. It's all real, nothing contrived! But the 2 "adults" could have controlled themselves in the first place!
The middle eps are more about 'business at hand.' There were great scenes of trying to land on a 'pitching deck!' Talk about hairy stuff!
But i also heard that for YOU to get on on one, you have to have blinking eyelashes, a twitching nose, and big tattooed biceps! haha
Boo- I think G-Men is playing down at the Grand.
Happy Friday.

Nora's birthday is coming up next month, and one of the things she likes are Diney-type movies--the live action ones and not really the animated ones. May 02, 2008 - Msg 62481: Hi everyone. Stopping in to say we survived the storm this morning. My neighbors to the east really got blasted. (AFD, are you ok out there??) We had hurricane strength winds but other than my gate door being blown open, no damage. Prayers for the families dealing with their losses.

Better run, got lots of picking up in the yard to do. Everyone be safe and enjoy your Friday! MW

PS My little hatchings have flown away today. It seems like only yesterday they were 4 little eggs (ha!) and now they're out in the big world! (I referred to them as Winkin, Blinkin, Nod and the spare.) But I do get my front door back and they did leave quite the nasty mess of bird doo on the door and around their nest. Better add that to the list of things to do(O). Any bird experts out there? If I were to preserve the wreath with the nest and put it back out next spring, would they come back?

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62482: Hey, MERRI. Praise the Lord you're safe! I, too, wish AFD would check in. ASA: Have you heard from her at your other Mayberry boards?

Not sure, and it may depend on the kid of birds they are (wrens?) but at least some kinds like to start from scratch each year. I have seen birds doing spring cleaning in the birdhouses of previous nests if I forget to do it myself!

Speaking of movie suggestions, has anyone seen "Because of Winn Dixie?" We're considering that one. What did you think?

M-T

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62483: HI M-T, when I was that age, I really enjoyed Jodie Foster in Freaky Friday which also starred Barbara Harris, John Astin and Dick Van Patten. But my favorite "G" series as a youngster was "Anne of Greene Gables" with Megan Follows. I taped them off of PBS 20 years ago. Maybe you could buy the book and the movie set together as a gift, if money allows. That would really be a nice present. Let us know what you decide! mw

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62484: M-T, my 6 year old didn't care for "Winn Dixie," it didn't hold her interest but of course, she's younger so that may have been it.

As for the birds, M-T, I honestly don't know. The mother was dark brown with a red head and she was the size of a Wren. Any ideas? I'm really out of my league with birds, but I do enjoy them. mw

Good luck and prayers on your son's behalf,Big Maude. That test sounds like a real doozy. My nephew takes the SAT tomorrow,so keep a good thought for him as well. His name is Andy. Good name, huh?! He's a good kid-hope he does well.

Me-They,she might like the original "Parent Trap" movie. That has Halley Mills in it. I can't think of any more right now.My mind won't let loose of Barney & KidSongs videos-Laci's favorites! Hard to get those tunes outta my head. "Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda.." Geesh!

Think I'm gonna relax and watch some old game shows on GSN.Y'all take care.

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62486: Thanks, MERRI. She's seen the newer movie version of "Anne of Green Gables," but she probably would enjoy the older ones. I think "Freaky Friday" (original) might have to wait a few years. I saw it when I was a kid, but it actually has some drinking and a smoking in it. Pretty comedic, but maybe more appropriate for her in a year or two.

POSSUM: Nora loves the original "Parent Trap" and has seen it a bizillion times. She really loves the old Hallie Mills movies.

Try Laci on the Cedarmont Kids DVDs. They are kid videos of Christian and traditional children's songs. Nora could not stop watching them at Laci's age, and she STILL enjoys them. There are a number of different ones, and they tend to be rather inexpensive. Try the "Action Bible Songs." I bet she'll absolutely love 'em.

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62488: Howdy do, all! Sorry to be AWOL for so long, just had a lot of things going on, still do for that matter, and it's not going to let up for a while. Trying to get some work done on our house and finish up our MIL quarters as we are having a pastor and his wife from India come and stay with us for a week in early June as he itinerates here in the states. That with all the school ending things have made things quite hectic.

MW - Did hear some small hail during the storm this morning with the wind and rain but no damage. I think most of it was further east of me as well.

Speaking of "Freaky Friday" with Jodie Foster...my family and I went to see it at the drive in when it first came out. We didn't get to see the whole thing because in the middle of the show everyone had to evacuate the drive in because a tornado was bearing down on that side of town. Ironically, it happened to be Friday too! I never have seen the ending to that movie.

M-T, Evie loves the live action Charlotte's Web, that stars Dakota Fanning. It came out a couple of years ago. The animals all have voices and it really is quite entertaining.

Well, not much else going on here, Reagan's a little under the weather, and I've got to get things ready to go so we can leave very early in the morning for my BIL/SIL's 25th wedding anniversary shindig tomorrow. It's five hours away.

Things are winding down here too. My dc are in different places in all there books. My dd has been done with grammar for quite a few weeks. She worked ahead because she loves it. It gives me such a since of accomplishment to see we're down to the last few chapters of a curriculum.

The spring is busy though with 2 playing baseball. My oldest is in a very serious league so the games are a bit stressful for mom, but he loves it. 2 of mine also just got cast in a summer children's play, Rapunzel. Should be fun.

Did any of you hear about the 19 yr old girl in Indiana who beat up the 81 yr old woman who was "driving too slow"? Witnesses say she sped around the woman and stopped in front of her, causing the elderly woman to have to stop. She got out, opened the lady's door and began beating her. She pulled her out of the car and continued to neat her. She broke the woman's leg in 3 places and she has to have a knee replaced from the beating. Turns out, the 19 yr old had three young children in her car at the time, too. I am so mad! What is wrong with so many young women these days?!

Have to go get ready to pick up Bruce from the airport. Bet he'll be glad to be sleeping in his own bed tonight.

Later,

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62496: I saw the story on that 19 year old who beat up that elderly woman, Boo. The newspeople were trying to interview her as she was being led into the police station(or somewhere). Boy, she is a real piece of work, I tell ya.

Have a safe drive, Boo.

M-T, yeah, I think Winn-Dixie might be a little too bland for an 8 year old's interest. But then, I am only speaking from the parent of my particular 7 year old, so who knows, she might like it.

If Nora likes the Wiggles, there is a full length movie they did when they were first starting out that Kai still likes to watch sometimes, called, The Wiggles Magical Adventure, or something like that.

Well, did the "diversity day" thing up at the school. I was manning one of the "snack rooms", and also played a short animated movie for the classes that came in, "The Sneeches". It's a Dr. Suess movie.
Unfortunately, there were two snack rooms and Kai's class went to the other one, so I didn't see her the whole afternoon. Her teacher said she originally had planned for me to be in the gym to head up one of the "obstacle courses", where they do things like try to pick up a small object wearing an oven mitt, or walking around blindfolded, but when I got there some other teacher was there and put me in the snack room. It would have been fun to watch Kai do some of that stuff, but oh well. Her teacher said she is glad I came because out of all the parents who said they would be there, only me and another parent showed up to help.
Oh, and I found out that the things that her teacher showed me that they would be doing was ALL they did. So my fears were unfounded, again. But I am glad they were, and it was kind of fun besides.

AFD, have a safe trip and a nice time tomorrow, and I hope Reagan is feeling better by then.

May 02, 2008 - Msg 62500: I'm kindof out-dated on the Disney movies, MeThey. The only ones I can think of are the ones I watched as a kid, which my own kids enjoyed watching also. Like "A Tiger Walks" with Brian Keith. Great movie. Also, "The Moonspinners" with Hailey Mills, which you probably already have. And "Toby Tyler", (I can't remember the actors name in that one) but it was about a boy that runs away and joins the circus. I don't think this is a Disney movie, but have any of you seen a movie called "The Journey of Nattie Gann"? It takes place during the Depression, and it's about a man who goes off to find work in Seattle, and is forced to leave his daughter behind, and her journey accross the country to find him. A real tear-jerker; no swear words or s*xual content or anything like that. They show it on Hallmark channel and I've seen it quite a few times.

The Mayors comitee from Deerlick falls was a good episode, did you notice Inga lauren is played by Priscilla Barnes from threes company?
I like Bo Hopkins the disbarred attorney that Jim used after Beth left the show too.

Boo- I really like the movie "A face in the crowd" it really showed Andy Griffiths acting range.
for people who are used to seeing him as Andy Taylor it is quite a shock!
The music in the show is fantastic too,its a little know fact but the 45 version of Mama Guitar was released by Capitol as single, however it is not the same version of the song heard in the film.
It took a lot of looking BUT i finally was able to locate a 45 rpm ep copy of Mama Guitar and Free man in the morning which does have the same exact versions played in the film, but they are complete!
It is by far my favorite Andy Griffith album!

Another great old movie that gets overlooked it 'a soldier in the rain" its a comedy with Steve McQueen and Jackie Gleason as well as Tuesday Weld..have you guys seen it?

May 03, 2008 - Msg 62504: Well, a good late evening to one and all. My little bunco group went well. One dear friend showed up about an hour early, and with her help, I was ready when everyone else got here. I might have made it on my own, except one person called at the last minute to say she couldn't come. She had eaten something that upset her stomach, and was home throwing up. That caused me to have to spend a lot of time on the phone trying to round up a sub at the last minute, and I wasn't able to find anyone. So - we played with one "ghost" which worked out okay anyway. We had chicken salad sandwiches, and pimento cheese sandwiches, chips and guacamole dip, and for dessert cherry jello with tons of dried fruit that plumps up in the jello, and whipped cream on top. Good! Everyone seemed to have a good time, ate nearly everything up (thank goodness), and Starr was delighted to have company. She just ran from one to another, gathering pats and ear scratches and attention from one and all. She was her charming little self.

Too bad the 81 year old woman didn't have a gun. She probably wouldn't have had to use it, but it would have been a hoot to see the look on the 19 year old's face when she found herself looking down the barrel of a pistol. The sad thing is, the young woman will probably get off with a scolding, and maybe an order to attend rage management classes. That will be a grave injustice, because her attack on that poor old woman could very well have been fatal. It may be yet, time will tell. A leg broken in three places, or even one place, can be a death sentence for an elderly person. She will be immobile for some time, and immobility can kill, especially the elderly. Also - I will not even speculate on the mental and emotional harm done to the children in the car, who presumably were witnesses to this shameful attack.

Well, I am reeaallly tired, so think I'll head for the bed. Be blessed, all. -- Romeena

May 03, 2008 - Msg 62505: Thats sad to hear about what happened to that 81 year old woman.
There was an incident about a 8 months ago where a 15 year old boy snuck up behind his father and beat him into a coma because he didnt want to miss an episode of spongebob.
The police officer said the boy sat down and watched tv while his dad lay unconscious until his mom came home.He then cooked up the story that a burglar came into the home and did it,later he confessed that his dad had come home from work early and told him to go to his room and do his homework before he could watch tv,so he took a bat to him.
The officer said the boy didnt seem to show any real emotion about what he had done and explained it might have been an new episode and he didnt want to miss it.
There was also recently an incident where a mexican gang member beat an elderly woman for $20 in her purse.
This is all a sad commentary on how far soceity has degraded, people today are so violent that you really never know what will set them off.
Off course I live in California so I see the worst of it.
I had some moron in a truck with road rage tailgate me and try to cut me off today for know reason at all.
Its sad that people make the world this way.
Anyway,I guess we shouldnt dwell on the negative things, but they are sure hard to ignore.
Good night all!

May 03, 2008 - Msg 62506: Wow, that's scary Rockford. I remember once, several years agos when I worked in labor and delivery, and a very pregnant woman came in for observation after she was pulled from the car by a raging woman who actually ran into her. She pulled her out onto the street and then proceeded to unlock her trunk and remove a baseball bat to beat the pregnant woman with. Luckily, a bystander got between them. Made me furious. Road rage is getting to be a real danger.

You are so right, Romeena. Immobility can lead to many dangerous complication, especially in the elderly...and she is also looking at surgery for the knee, which hold some real risks at her age. I read somewhere that the 19 yr old is actually a cage fighter, which would explain her strentgh. I also think MDC might have something there about the drugs. I know that Meth can make people into violent monsters. She looked like she might be on something in the mugshot I saw of her.

Been out doing a little shopping today but it's time to go find Bruce and take over the kids while he works. He told me that he did some very serious praying and seeking the Lord while he was in North Carolina and he thinks he knows what direction to take with the house. Thanks to those who prayed for him. He is doing better and less stressed.

May 03, 2008 - Msg 62511: It really is getting scary, being out on the road. I try to drive defensively, don't speed but don't poke along either, will allow people to "cut in" if they need to, and try to just keep my eyes on the road and mind my own business.

Still, around here it gets difficult. We have a lot of drivers who are totally ignorant of our laws, and who cannot read the signs, such as "No right turn on red" or whatever. Some may be just ignoring the signs, but I honestly think many of them just simply can't read them. So, we have to drive very defensively and expect the unexpected. Just because they have a yield sign doesn't mean they'll do it. Question - how did they get a license if they can't read English? Answer - they don't have one. Guess what? They don't have ins#rance either, so when you're involved in a wreck with one of those folks, you're just on your own. That's why we all carry the "uninsured motorist" coverage.

People in Mexico don't drive the way we do here. It's enough to scare you to death. When I was in Mexico City with my friend, staying with her mother, we drove around quite a bit as my friend showed me the sights. I was appalled. Yield signs are ignored, stop signs are treated like yields, four-way stops are by bluff only, and speed limits are a joke. The rule is, if you can do it and get away with it (i.e. not have a wreck) then go for it. We sat at a red light in the left turn lane of a street, waiting to underpass another street and would then turn left on the access road. The driver in front of us got impatient, ran the red light and turned left on the access road (wrong way), immediately turned right into the underpass, traveling the wrong way in the oncoming lanes, then turned left on the access road on the other side, where he wanted to go in the first place. I was horrified. My friend just laughed and said "He got away with it, that's all that matters. No accidente, no le hace. (No wreck, no problem.)" So there you are.

Well, guess I'll rustle up some grub. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Hello porch family....Mrs Rev and I spent the day together just shopping and looking around. I told her it didn't matter where she wanted to go or what she wanted to do cause I was just happy being together. Then we went to the Olive Garden for a nice dinner.

Boo....I'm so glad Bruce is doing better. Thank the Lord for the peace of God. Prayer sure does work!

Ro....I know what you mean about the driving in countries like Mexico. I've driven in Mexico, Haiti, Philipines and Vietnam and believe me you better have nerves of steel.

Praying that Spot is having a safe trip and that they bring home the grand prize.

Heading to bed so you all have a blessed Sunday and know that I'm praying for all the porch family.

May 03, 2008 - Msg 62513: Thanks REV, you are so right.

Ro, I spent almost 3 weeks in Guadalajara, Mexico and used the public transportation (translated: old, rickety buses). We hung on for dear life and prayed alot.

I didn't think about steroids, Sterling...could be part of the problem with the 19 yr old. Hmmm.....wasn't she a charmer, though? Someone you couldn't wait to take home to meet Mom...hehe

Rockford, you were talking about A Face In The Crowd; I wonder if you would tell me how it ended, if you don't mind...

Better go get Erin to bed...sunday school in the morning.

May 04, 2008 - Msg 62514: Good late evening (or very, very early morning), everyone. REV, aside from here at home, I've only seen the traffic in two other countries. One, of course, was Mexico, and it was unbelievable. I thought no place could be worse, and then I went to Beijing. Oh, my. There are no words in the English language to adequately describe the traffic in the city of Beijing. I don't even want to imagine what it's going to be like with the Olympics crowd over there. In fact, our team that's going to Mongolia this year is skipping Beijing, and will go to South Korea instead - Seoul, I think. I wrote about the traffic to some extent in my journals of the Mongolia trips - I think some of you read them. Asa, I know you did, and I think some others did as well.

Anyway, back to Beijing traffic. The roads are crowded, packed tight with a mixture of cars, buses, pedicabs, a few traditional rickshas, bicycles and pedestrians. Lanes are narrow, with vehicles moving along less than two feet apart. Luckily, nothing moves very fast. It's a shock to be in a bus that's inching along down the street, and suddenly a black-haired head goes bobbing by, walking with the flow of traffic, just outside your window, between the bus and the cars in the next lane. Bicycles scrape by as well, and most of them have closely-spaced handlebars. Anything that spread very wide wouldn't fit between the cars. Bicycles and pedestrians don't stay in the lanes, they travel between them. Yet, to our amazement, in all that confusion we never saw an accident. The bus drivers are amazingly skillful and can put those huge buses into spaces where I couldn't put my car without denting it. Unbelievable.

Well, enough of that. I'm going to bed, church in the morning. Good night, all. --Romeena

May 04, 2008 - Msg 62518: Howdy, all. It's been a lazy, beautiful day. Got a little bit of weeding done, planted some caladium bulbs - about a month late, but they'll grow, I guess. Got some new fish, hope that big old bird doesn't come and eat them.

I'm still grieving over that tragedy at the Kentucky Derby yesterday. Big Brown's win was impressive, and he's a beautiful horse, but I can't help wondering if there might have been a different outcome if Eight Belles hadn't been in trouble. To see that beautiful filly just suddenly collapse and sprawl over the track like that was heartbreaking. I know the actual breakdown came after the finish line, but I wonder if she was having pain before that, like maybe in the stretch. She wasn't that far behind Big Brown, and might have caught him if she hadn't been in pain. This is all speculation, maybe she felt nothing until those ankles actually snapped. I hope that's so. It's just tragic that such a magnificent animal had to be euthanized, and right where it happened. They couldn't even try to save her. I understand why, but it just seems so pitiful.

There are few things so impressive, so thrilling, to me as a beautiful horse in full, wide-open dead run. The power, the grace, the fluid motion - I just love it. I remember when Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973 - set a new track record in the Derby, a new track record in the Preakness, and a new world record in the Belmont Stakes, which he won by 31 lengths (some accounts say 25 lengths). The rest of the field could have phoned in their contribution to that race. He was a huge horse for a thoroughbred, and the sight of him eating up track in the stretch at the Belmont, like he had wings, is something I will never forget. I've watched many replays, and still get tears in my eyes when I see it. Truly one of God's most noble creatures.

I can't help but wonder, though, if we've begun asking too much of these horses. There was the pitiful case of the beautiful Barbaro, who finally had to be put down recently after a long fight to recover from his broken rear leg. And now poor Eight Belles. So sad.

OK, so now you know my weakness. I'm not a racing fan, as such - I just love beautiful, courageous horses. Big Brown shows promise - we'll see. There will never be another to equal Secretariat, though. He had it all - size, speed, personality, charisma, courage - all in one breathtakingly beautiful package. A once-in-a-lifetime horse.

Be blessed, all. --Romeena

May 04, 2008 - Msg 62519: That is so sad, Romeena.

Congratualtions SPOT! That's great!

Been a pretty good day. We had a business meeting/luncheon at church today and we voted in a children's minister (good news). We needed one and the woman who will be doing the job is so sweet and very qualified (and most importantly, loves the Lord and others).

I watched a movie this afternoon with Kirk Douglas and Kim Novak. I think it was called "When We Meet" and it was made in 1960, I think. I wasn't worth my time...kind of a 60's soap opera about a couple having an extra-marital affair. I kept hoping it would turn out well, and the man did give up the affair and the other woman, but they romantisized the whole thing and made it seem like they were such noble people who would have to suffer by having to stay with their spouses...Hollywood!

It's been a cool but overcast day here, a nice break from the heat we are already having here in South Texas.

Hope ya'll have a great evening.

Boo

May 04, 2008 - Msg 62520: Hey, congratulations, Spot. That's just great. I'll bet you had a lot of fun. I like rodeos!

Wow! Today a beautiful PAIR of American goldfinches visited my yard! I have on occasion see a female wander through, and once I saw a bright flash of gold that was probably a male, but he never landed, just zipped past. Well, today I had both the male and the female, and they hung around. Since I had long ago given up on getting any into the yard, I had no thistle seed out for them. So, hopped in the car and ran to Petsmart, got a thistle feeder and some seed and hung it out there. Naturally, I haven't seen the birds since. Maybe they'll be back in the morning, I think they're typically most active early in the day.

I think a woodp#cker has nested in one of my trees. I've heard some hammering, saw a hole in a dead limb, and have seen him in the yard frequently, so I think he may have a little lady holed up in that limb, sitting on eggs, I hope. It is just such fun to watch the critters, especially if you can do enough of it to catch the continuity of things.

I also bought a few fish to add to the pond - nothing big or expensive. I buy little cheapies and let them grow up out there. I did get one redcap koi for $4, but everybody else was very cheap. The little feeder fish are twelve cents, and the biggest fish out there right now, at about 8" long, was once one of those. It's fun to watch them grow up.

Well, guess I'll go watch Britcoms. I've seen them all before, but who cares? Be blessed, all. --Romeena

May 05, 2008 - Msg 62522: Mornin' y'all! Wake up! Spot's taking us out to the Waffle House for breakfast,so get ready!

Ro,I have a soft spot for horses, the Kentucky Derby, and Secretariat. My daddy was involved with horse racing back before I was born.He worked along with the farriers. He died when I was 6,but my family always watches the Kentucky Derby in his honor.Just a tiny way of feeling connected to him. And Secretariat, that magnificent horse, was trained right down the road from me! Oh,I wish I knew then what I know now-I'd have been out at that track all the time watching him! A French Canadian man named Lucius Laurien (sp?) prepared him for the Triple Crown. His nephews,Jacques & Marcel went to Jr. High school with me. I haven't thought about those cute boys in years! Ha! Don't know if a lot of people are aware of Secretariat's beginnings, but yes,he spent lots of time in my neck of the woods-S.C.

Oh,Me-They- thanks for suggesting the Cedarmont Kids videos for Laci. I mentioned them to my daughter yesterday & she told me that Laci has 3 or 4 of them. She said she loves them! I'll have to get some for her to keep at my "rock".

Well, better get ready to head out with spot.See y'all for breakfast!

May 05, 2008 - Msg 62526: I have something in common with your children, HM. I adore Christmas movies and like to watch them in the summer, too. I saw Jamie Lee Curtis on a commercial last night and thought about getting my Christmas With The Kranks DVD out to watch. By the way, I met the people who owned the goats I was telling you about and they seem very nice. The mom goats did get better and the babies are fine...they now have 2 more, a set of twins, one white and one completely black. I have not seen a black goat anywhere among the group so that's kind of strange.

I watched an episode of "Dirty Jobs" yesterday (Bruce has still not gotten rid of the cable) with Sean and they were on a Dairy farm. Let me tell you, that was a dirty job! They had a whole barn devoted to "maternity", where about 100 calves a day were born. Talk about a mess to clean up. I thought it was very sad that these poor cows are artificially inseminated beginning at 13 months and they just have calf after calf. It just didn't seem right. They even showed them performing a c-section on a cow while she just stood there. They cut open her side and got the calf. Anyway, I know that animals provide food for man, and that is good with me, but it just didn't seem humane.

Better get started...lots to do.

Wanted to mention, that we changed our day at the drug rehab to Monday evening instead of Tuesday (for those of you who pray for us). Thanks!

I watched the ep where Opie was falsely accused of writing a not-so-flattering poem about barney. Anyone remember this one?
"There was a deputy named Fife,
He carried a gun and a knife,
The gun was all dusty,
the knife was all rusty,
He never caught a crook in his life."

May 05, 2008 - Msg 62532: Hello Everyone on the Porch:

This is the "Dud".

I am just checking in. I need some more of those rockin' chair splinters.

Asa: I love to cook but you always make me want to go out to eat.

Boo: My mother is 83 years old and she drives real slow and many drivers honk at her and make her so nervous. The story about the woman getting beaten for driving slow really hits home. If some person did that to my mother here in Northern La. I think if I retaliated in some way to get even, I would be no-billed by the local Grand Jury. Do ya'll remember the case of Gary Plouchet who shot the karate instructor SOB who molested and kidnapped his son. Gary shot and killed him with a "Dirty Harry 44 Magnum" as the FBI escorted the molester in the Baton Rouge airport to stand trial. Geraldo Rivera's TV show crew caught the shooting on video. His crew as well as Gary was tipped off by someone (FBI)? that he would be arriving on such and such flight. Gary was no-billed of second degree murder.

Romeena: Is the Dallas area still having water rationing? I have only been back to Big D to see and/or get my daughter to take her back to North La. I have little use to stay there for more than a couple of days except to eat at good restaurants and to take my 11 yr old daughter to the Galleria Mall to go ice skating and shopping.

Glad to be back and seeing that ya'll are still kicking.

The Cooking Fool, The "Dud".

Been meanin' to tell ya all that visitors can also access the Front Porch thru the "The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club" website, and so they sometimes ask how they can "join." I believe they are talking about joining a local chapter of the TAGSRWC, not the Front Porch, so i think we should tell them to click on Floyd's "Let me know..." link below. Just a thought. If you Google TAGSRWC, you can see what that site looks like.
