ROMEENA: Feeling poorly? Have you tried 10 cent blue pills?

FLOYD: Thanks for the trouble check. It's nice to hear from you now and again. Stop in and jaw sometime.

MD: Good to hear from you, too. Williamburg is very nice. You may not know that the historic town of Williamsburg is completely replicated and none of it is original. In the 1920s, a Rockefeller pretty much bought up the town that was there, demolished it, and recreated how it looked in the 18th century. The town that existed at the time was pretty much like any other 1920s town--gas station, grocery store, etc.--but none of the really old building were still in existence. It's kind of ironic that the little town was destroyed (and people more or less evicted) to "preserve" history.

See y'all at lunch. Please say a little prayer for me--I have been nursing a bad headache since yesterday afternoon.

April 24, 2008 - Msg 62227: Me-They, homamaker is right about the Coke. I'm sure it's the caffeine and the sugar, but I've chased many a headache with a can of Coke. It will settle a queasy stomach too, if sipped slowly. I kept a can of Coke available constantly for a solid year while I was taking chemo, back in 1979-80. It was the only thing that kept me going, and I didn't miss a day of work during the whole coure of treatment.

Funny note - we weren't supposed to have drinks at the desk, but under the circumstances, I was allowed to have my Coke. I just tried to keep it sitting behind something or otherwise out of sight. A new nurse came to work with us, one of the gung-ho types, and it wasn't long before she openly confronted the manager and asked how come I could have a drink at the desk when no one else could. The manager's answer? "Well, dearie, we'll start you on a course of chemotherapy, and if you want a Coke, you can have one." End of protest. I loved that manager!

I think I mentioned this before, but do y'all have any advice for me on helping Bryson with his enormous fear of bees? The other day he started to run out in front of a car to run from a bee. He had a small reaction when he was stung, and he thinks he will be killed. All 3 of the men surrounding me are complete ocd over something and this is his, at least when the bees are out.
We've been celebrating national turn off tv week and it has been challenging to say the least. That's why I haven't posted. In the afternoons, when I have time, the boys are on there. In some ways, it's nice and quiet and I enjoy it.
Well, I'd best get some things done. Y'all have a good evening!

Lucy, I am going to email some photos to Romeena of me around bees when i was a youngster. The key is to just be calm around them. Humans emit a hormore that the bees can sense. If one IS stung, you just 'flick out' the stinger with a credit card etc, so less venom gets in. Don't squeeze the venom sac. You can see me in the photos as the one holding the beehive inserts where the bees build their perfectly formed six-sided honey combs. In the first one, I am 7 years old and the second one I am 17. Did it every summer for ten years.

Just about ready to hit the sack. Been a busy day, but a pleasant one. Warm here but cloudy. I had to serve my "parent time" in the concession stand at the baseball field tonight (only one hour)...sound familiar to any of you who have kids in sports?? It actually turned out to be kind of fun but I must say I was surprised at the poor manners of most children (from small to teens). I seldom heard a "thank you". Maybe parents are getting lax when it comes to teaching those things.

Well, tomorrow is another busy one. Have to take mom to a dr's appointment and MIL is coming to spend the weekend so I have to do laundry and change the beds...better get some sleep.

April 25, 2008 - Msg 62241: Good evening, all. Mmmm - a barbecue plate sounds good. I've been having "leapfrog leftover" meals this week, and the beat goes on. Leapfrog leftover meals happen often around here. That's where some component of a meal is carried forward to the next day, to become a part of that meal. Then something from the second meal goes over to a third meal, and so forth. I cooked four ears of corn last night, and ate two. Tonight I cut the corn off the remaining two ears, and fried it in a bit of butter in a skillet with salt and pepper and a big dollop of sour cream. Stir that up, and it's larrupin'! I let some country-style spareribs bake slowly most of the afternoon, until they were fork-tender, and ate a couple of them with the corn. The rest of the ribs went into a bowl with half of a large jar of sauerkraut, to be simmered for a while tomorrow afternoon. I'll eat less than half of it, and the next day, I'll dice some potatoes into it to take up the saltiness that seems to increase when a kraut dish ages a bit. I'll probably eat the meat out of it and still have some kraut left over, so might stir-fry that in a little bacon grease, with some apple diced in, and get one of those single-portion ham steaks to eat with it. So, that's leapfrog leftovers. My husband loved them! You'd be amazed what you can do with bits and pieces of leftovers. The rest of the jar of kraut will keep in the fridge until I think of something to do with it. Maybe hotdogs, or reuben sandwiches.

Well, do you get the impression that I'm getting my appetite back after feeling so yucky the first part of the week? Seems all I've talked about is food!

Hazel, that's good news. Praise the Lord!

Boo, I think what you witnessed in the kids' behavior at the concession stand is just a sample of the sense of entitlement that has been fostered in many of the young folks today. They don't have any notion of expressing gratitude, because they aren't grateful. They see no need for it, because you're only doing what you're supposed to do - fulfilling their needs. To so many of these kids, they're the center of the universe, and you're there to meet their needs, nothing more. In my opinion, that attitude is going to come back to bite us - or them - one of these days. It's a bit scary.

Well, I'm off to bed. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

April 25, 2008 - Msg 62242: Well now Romeena that was a very neat post about the leapfrog food!..I loved it..well color eps on TV land..Rev enjoy the home time..snack will be whatever that leapfrog at Ro"s tosses over!..SPOT

We had snow here yesterday as well. Not enough to shovel. It was one of those odd weather days when it would rain, snow, hail, and then sunshine, non of it lasting more than a few minutes. I love days like that. This huge black cloud comes in over the lake and dumps on you for a few and the next thing you know the sun is back out and shining again. We'd be proud to have you join us, and speaking as a southerner (yes, we Texans consider ourselves southerners - we sure ain't yankees!), we'd love to make you an honorary southerner. You just need to learn to say "y'all" and "bless her (or his) heart" a lot, and learn to cook grits and greens, and you'll qualify. Spot does most of the cooking around here, Big Maude makes a lot of slaw and homemaker keeps us supplied with meatballs (bless her heart), but an extra hand is always welcome.

Do you have any good stories? We've all known each other for so long, we're always eager for someone who can share some new material with us. And yes, we do share our rough times as well as the good ones, and we pray and support each other through those hard times. I think we've all benefitted at one time or another - I certainly have.

Guess I'd better go get that kraut and ribs to simmering. Sure sounds good. If you like kraut, come on by. There's plenty! --Romeena

April 25, 2008 - Msg 62249: My yard man just called and said he's going to try to make it before the rains come again, but he'd better hurry. If he doesn't, he won't be able to mow until Monday, and by then it will need to be baled. It's about 8" long now! We overseed my yard with fescue every fall, and I have green grass all winter. Then when the weather starts to heat up in the spring, the fescue dies back and the St. Augustine greens up and takes over. Well, this year we've had a lot of rain and not much really warm weather, so the fescue hasn't died back, it's just growing like mad. There's a thick carpet of St. Augustine down below, and a sea of waving green fescue above it.

Normally, my yard man uses a mulching mower and no clippings are removed, but this stuff is so tall and thick and lush that mulching would just leave a layer of matted grass, so he's having to catch it. He mows a strip about twenty feet long, and has to stop to empty the catcher! My yard is pretty big, so you can imagine what a chore this is. Naturally, I pay hin extra for this, but it's still a big job.

There is so much life in the yard right now, you can almost smell it. The flowers are just glorious - roses, iris, verbena, pansies, petunias, dianthus, snapdragons - all just blooming their little hearts out. One rose, named Angel Face, and purchased in Sugarplum's honor, is just a delight, with the sweetest fragrance you can imagine. Butterflies have emerged and have discovered the flowers. They'll become more plentiful as time goes by. A fledgling baby bird is hopping around in the tall grass, and his parents are doing tag-team duty, feeding and guarding him. They don't know it, but they have an ally (me) sitting here at this window. If a cat shows his greedy little face in the yard, I'll push a button to turn on the appropriate sprinkler zone, and will send him home wetter, though probably not wiser. The latest litter of baby squirrels are out of the nest box now, and are out exploring. They're so cute! Smaller versions of their parents, slim and trim little bodies, tails not fully fluffed out yet. They can be distinguished by their tentative movement, too. A walk along the fencetop is more like a crawl, not the confident, jaunty gait of their parents. They'll learn, though. I do enjoy them so much.

Well, be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Not being able to do things like that sounds like a sad commentary on our times, when you can't trust some kid's parent to not poison the rest of the class. That, or the school is just afraid of another parent suing the school if their kid does get sick because they allow homemade treats.
Either way, it's still sad.

April 25, 2008 - Msg 62259: Hi, all. Red, glad you dropped back by - hope you'll make it a regular thing. Dr. P, if you could visit the homes that some of the kids come from, you might be glad your child isn't eating something produced in their kitchen. I have had families bring in food for a patient, in containers crusted with old food that didn't remotely resemble the current dish. Who knows what, or how old, those remains were? Gag.

Sterling, there's nothing wrong with Yankees - I married one! Didn't take him long to start saying "y'all", though, and the first time he went home for a visit they all laughed at his accent!

Well, I still feel cruddy - already called in sick for tomorrow night. Talked to the doctor today and she said absolutely not to try to work. She's right. I went outside for about five minutes, cut some irises for my desk and came in sweating and dizzy - too much exertion, I guess. It's just making me crazy, not being to work outside. I've got petunias to plant, and rain lily bulbs, and a few weeds that need to be pulled before they become a lot of weeds, roses and irises to deadhead, clematis to tie up and get on strings - this yard doesn't run by itself, you know! There is no way I can do it right now, though, I'd keel over out there, and that wouldn't be cool. So, I'll sit here at my window and grumble.

MDC, I'm going to the album from here. Will get your pictures posted - very interesting - thanks for sending them. --Romeena

Hey to Red, Homaker, Spit and everyone else! ha
Possum- prayers continue for you, I sure hope Earnest T isn't jabbin' at ya with a stick! That must smart!
Dr P- what is a leapfrog meal? I recall how we kids would get popcorn balls on Halloween, and we'd eat em right up, no problem. Like Sterling said, it's a sorry sign of the times that all for school now has to be store-bought.
Have a great weekend, get to preahin'.
I gotta go get a haircut and get all them itchy hairs down my back!

April 25, 2008 - Msg 62262: Ro - I agree with you. . .there are some things you might not eat if you see the likes of the kitchen they came out of. Also - with so many food allergies, it is easier to check the ingredients of the food if it is in the original package. My sons' school doesn't allow any treats for birthdays but I send some things in every now and then for a "just because it is Friday." The teachers appreciate the break in action.

Spot - I bought some onions and red taters to plant. I'll get the rest of my seeds this weekend and then it is off to planting!

What happened to our deer loving friend from Texas - we need to put out some APB's for some folks who haven't checked in regular like. Anyone heard from Poor Horatio lately -

hm. . .spit!

April 25, 2008 - Msg 62263: Homemaker- what's with the spit? Did I miss something?
Sterling- I have been so relaxed not having Spongebob or something even more ridiculous-Mr. Men-blaring in the background. Good job to Kai! We didn't actually get anything it was just something I forced the kids to do to realize just how addicted to tv, youtube, and wii they really are.
Hello Robyn & Red- How do you do? I'm also on the Georgia end of the porch. Nice to meet y'all.
Romeena- I too married a Yankee, and he remains one to this day even though he hasn't lived up North since '86! He has no accent and he still has that go go go mentality. I am a true G.R.I.T.S. so it can be interesting at times.
Boo- I have enjoyed your quotes!
MDC- Thank you for thinking to send those pictures of you to Romeena. I'm at my wits end with this boy. I just think, look, just stand still, that's it. But, he sees them as the enemy. I reminded him that only the devil is our true enemy, and he's causing Bryson to fear. So we'll see.
Possum- Sorry you're not feeling much better. Wish there was something I could do to help. Take it easy now.
Dr P- Yes, it is now becoming more norm for schools to require store bought items because of food allergies. My sister had to take fruit roll ups and packages of juice to my nephew's party. I had to take bakery cupcakes for my son, but instead I gave him Krispy Kreme's since that was cheaper and closer (and yummier in my opinion). Just about every kid has some sort of allergy now. I heard that eventually every school will become peanut free.
Hazel- That's great!
Well, I need to get the pizza goin. Talk to y'all later!
Blessings,
~Lucy

April 25, 2008 - Msg 62264: Schools will become peanut-free?? Well, so much for Cracker Jack, I guess. Seems a shame, somehow.

At the risk of starting a moulage, I have to say I think entirely too much is being made of the allergy thing these days. Now don't get me wrong. I realize some people really and truly do have allergies, including to peanuts, and they can be very serious, even life-threatening. I'm just saying that I think a lot of things are being blamed on allergies that really aren't anything of the kind. I have a friend who is a year younger than I am, so that makes her reaallly old. A few months ago, she developed an annoying cough that would attack without warning, usually after she ate. A doctor decided she had allergies, tested her, and sure enough, she tested positive for allergies to a whole host of things. Things she had eaten all her life without any problem, I might add. Overnight, eating out with her became a major project, because there were so few things she "could" eat. She followed the diet religiously, but the cough continued. Finally she got tired of the diet, ate normally, and the cough remained but got no worse. Eventually, it was determined that she had some weird kind of gastric reflux that was triggering the cough, no matter what she ate. The point here is that she tested positive for allergies to all those things, yet had never had, and still doesn't have, any true allergic reaction to them. Sometimes I think we're "doctoring" ourselves to death.

Having said all that, I'll also say that if my child was deathly allergic to peanuts or bananas or anything else, I'd be grateful for any watchdogging the school could do. However, I'd also be camping on his trail to monitor his food intake, and would be actively teaching him from day one about the things he couldn't eat. I would not place the sole responsibility on the school.

Now, how's that for a moulage-starter?

April 25, 2008 - Msg 62271: Ro, as soon as you started describing your friend's cough, the first thing I thought of was gastric reflux. Sounds like some doctor got carried away with the allergies! I know exactly what you mean. Remember a few years ago, Sean's lips swelled after eating a peanut butter sandwich so I told his doctor, who sent me an allergist. The allergist tested him for peanut allergy, and the skin test was positive. He told us we would have to carry a Epi Pen everywhere and said we shouldn't even go near a peanut...he proceeded to tell us horrible stories about people who ate "hidden" peanuts in food and nearly expired because .."they never took their Epi pens with them!"...I understand the warnings, but the truth is, Sean has accidentally eaten things containing peanuts and had no reaction. What's the deal?! We try our best to stay away from peanuts but I don't understand why he didn't have a reaction...maybe it takes more to trigger it. It's kind of a pain.

Hey TOM, you have a way of saying the right thing at the right time, Friend. Thanks for the "rainbow" word.

Hey SPOT. I'm here, it's just been a booger of a busy day for me.

My old shoulder is giving me trouble tonight...guess I overdid. It is such a sore pain and can feel just miserable. Any advice for me for a strained shoulder??

April 26, 2008 - Msg 62274: Thank you, Tom. That's a beautiful quote that serves to remind us all that God loves us.

Hazel, I'm sorry you're allergic to egg whites! That must be terribly inconvenient. Eggs are in practically everything. I don't know how you would avoid them. How did you learn you're allergic to them? What do they do to you, if you don't mind me asking? My son can't eat bananas, his throat swells, and one daughter can't eat shrimp - her lips swell.

I've been very blessed - I have no known allergies at all, to any food or any drugs. However, when it comes to anything resembling a narcotic, even something as mild as Darvocet, I have every side effect you can name. Violent nausea, dizziness, and even confusion in the case of the big drugs like demerol or morphine. I'm a surgeon's nightmare, because they don't know how to manage me postop. I can take Toradol, and it works very well, but because it can cause bleeding in some people, they're reluctant to give it. So, after my numerous surgeries, I got one dose of Toradol, and took Advil or Tylenol thereafter, wiggled into a comfortable position and dared anyone to disturb me. No turning and all that, just leave me alone. They did, and I did just fine. Usually within 24 hours all is under control, and I can handle the pain. If they have to open my chest for a valve replacement down the line, that may be a different story.

I'm still coughing my silly head off, still as sore as if hit by a truck, but I guess this too shall pass. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

April 26, 2008 - Msg 62275: Hey Red, don't think I know a shoulder incant, but thanks for the suggestion...I don't have a buckeye, either! I do, however, have Advil, which seems to be doing the trick.

Hey to you, SPOT. I am feeling better and would love to share you Captain Crunch, Buddy. Is there a good, old movie we can watch while?

I don't have any known allergies, either Ro. I guess we are pretty lucky. I am sorry to hear about your silly head being coughed off, but don't forget the VICKS and socks before bed!...amazing stuff, VICKS.

April 26, 2008 - Msg 62281: Not all that uncommon, Possum. I've had a few patients with that allergy. Also had lots of patients with an allergy to latex. By the way, I don't even remember my class motto and I graduated in '80. I remember our class numbered a whopping 76 (6 of which were sober most of the time). I grew up in a hick town and there wasn't much else to do but drink and go to the drive-in on weekends. Our class was a "dud" class. We were the first class in the history of the school to NOT have a senior class play or senior trip. They gave us the option of the trip or the money, and we took the money. Nobody could get it together enough to actually memorize lines in a play.

I seem to have come down with a cold (drat!) but have to take Erin to her t-ball game. I was hoping it would get rained out because last night it poured rain for almost 2 hours but now it's sunny. Everything looks so green now! We needed the rain. Better go..

April 26, 2008 - Msg 62282: Ro, I'm not allergic to egg whites. That was my attempt at a joke. I guess I'm just not as funny as I thought I was. You said your allergy topic would start a moulage, and I said I couldn't join in because I was allergic to egg whites. (You know, it makes Andys moulages nice and fluffy). Nope, I'm not allergic to any foods, that I know of. I am allergic to pennicilin and I also have seasonal allergies (ah-ah-ah CHOOO!)
Got up early this morning and sat in my chair with my hot pack on my back and watched "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs". What a great ep. From start to finish. When Andy makes Otis that "fixer-upper", and the look on his face as he drinks it. And then, the giraffe speach. Barney goes on and on, while it's storming outside, "...boy giraffe's are selfish...running around, looking after number one, getting hit by lightening...". And that ep has one of my favorite epilogues. When Mr. Biggers comes in, after Andy and Barney have given all the dogs away. And they realize they're his dogs. "Don't just stand there, go get the rope."

"The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rains from heaven."

April 26, 2008 - Msg 62283: Good morning, all. Mercy, such children on this porch. I graduated in 1956, in a class of 51 people, some of whom were sober all the time, most of whom were sober most of the time, and one of whom was rarely sober. Poor guy, I wonder what became of him? He did manage to graduate, as I recall. If we had a class motto, I've forgotten it. Our senior trip was a short jaunt up the highway to Barton Springs for a picnic and a day of swimming.

We did have a senior play, "The Light that Failed." I played Marcia, a femme fatale who got the payback she truly had coming, but I got to kiss Jimmy K. - the son of the family that owns a dairy and creamery in the San Antonio area, and who lived on a large and beautiful ranch. For a while there, I had these notions -- well, then a year later I met my Dale and forgot all about those ranch-wife notions!

Drat, I see the fountain rock is flowing at a trickle. That means the filter is clogged and must be cleaned out right away. Argh. I really don't feel like doing it, but Starr can't (no thumbs for gripping things and she's too short) and there's no one else around, so guess I'm it. Back in a few. --Romeena

April 26, 2008 - Msg 62284: Actually, Hazel, that was very funny. I'm just very slow on the uptake these days. I feel so rotten, guess I wouldn't know a funny joke if it walked up and kicked me. Your humor is always of the sly and subtle variety, and always funny, but right now, I probably wouldn't "get" the Three Stooges! --Romeena

April 26, 2008 - Msg 62285: OK, I'm back. I washed out the filter and put it back, cleaned the grate and components on the umbrella fountain, netted out a lot of blown-in debris and now the pond looks great once again. I do enjoy that feature out there - it was worth the money and now the time and effort it takes to maintain. There are few things as peaceful as flowing water.

Well, I feel awful, not sure whether I'm hot or cold, but I'm sweating like the last pig at a luau, and feel a bit dizzy. I think I'll go lie down for a while. I see "Move Over, Darling" is on TV, and that's one of my favorite movies. James Garner and Doris Day were a dynamite combo, almost as good as Cary Grant and Doris Day. Very cute movie! Be blessed, all. --Romeena
