April 10, 2008 - Msg 61832: homemaker, I was really impressed with what I saw about the modular homes. The show took the viewer through the construction of the home, from the first saw cut to completion. Most of it took place in the factory, and I was very impressed with the quality control and precision. Tolerances were down to 1/16" or less. Part of the assembly was done in the factory, but it was completed on site. The beauty of it was that it was fully customized for the new owner's site. The one I saw was being built for a woman whose home had been destroyed by a storm surge during Katrina. So the foundation was concrete piers sunk deep in the earth, and elevated about six feet above ground, with beams providing the floor support. The house had been built to fit on that platform, and it did. Just lovely!

Speaking of lovely, there is a butterfly drifting around in the back yard right now, seemingly just overwhelmed by his options! He has visited dozens of flowers, but never stays long at any single blossom, apparently because another catches his attention. He has an embarrassment of riches right now! (heehee)

The sun has come out and it's pretty out there again. I'm feeling sorry for my yard man. He came a day erlier last week because of a funeral, and we have had rain twice, so my grass is well above my ankles, thick and lush and green. It's much too long to be mulch-cut, he'll have to bag it (or bale it!) and it's so thick he won't get fifteen feet before he'll have to stop and empty the bag. Guess that will call for a bit extra this time. He'd never ask for it, but I try to be fair. It's not his fault that we had so much rain.

Well, better get ready for the dentist, I guess. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Yes,they've changed the rules on antibiotics for heart patients.I have mitral valve prolaspe and used to take tons of horse pill antibiotics when I went to dentist-before & after like MDC said.I had an echocardiogram done last year and because it showed no regurgitation (bet Me-They likes that word!) of the valve,my cardiologist said I don't have to take protective antibiotics anymore. But sterling,it's not going to hurt Kai to have them and if it makes you feel better about things, then give them to her.Peace of mind is worth it,right? Laci had some dental work a few months ago and I'm not sure if they gave them to her or not.She had open heart surgery,so you'd think they'd give them to her if they gave them to anyone.I'll find out if they deemed it safe for her or not.

April 10, 2008 - Msg 61857: Good afternoon, all. Just got back from the dentist, teeth all squeaky clean, and no cavities or anything else needing attention. Yippee! As for the antibiotics, my cardiologist still recommends them and my dentist insists I take them. I do have some mitral valve regurgitation, and now with the pacer lead implanted in the left ventricle, there are obviously some rough spots where bacteria could set up camp. Thus - the antibiotics. I don't mind taking them - I take 2 grams as a pre-med, and that's all.

We must have really had a wind storm last night. I drove past a huge, and I mean huge, tree that had blown down and was almost blocking the street. It was just uprooted and blown over. Pretty scary looking. It was so big that even though it had fallen parallel to the street, the branches still nearly reached to the other side. I can't imagine what damage was underneath the part in the owner's yard, but the branches were right at the front door. Sure gives me cause to think, with five cottonwoods. They're such soft wood, I'm always terrified they're going to fall, but they also seem to be pretty pliable. The big limbs that did come down last night are off my sycamore!

Well, gotta work tonight, so I think I'll try to grab a little nap. Spot, how long are you working tonight - until morning, I imagine. Me too. I start at 7 pm, and get off at 7:30 am. Oy.

A big howdy to all the new porch folks.

I had a busy day at work today so am just now sitting down for a minute.

Dinner menu will be: baked chicken, corn, broccoli, potaotes, corn, SLAW, rolls and for dessert a big slice apple carmel cake. tea, kool aid to drink.

Looks like the porch has had a busy day. We had a beautiful day here in Northeast Tennessee today.
73 right about now, a sunny day with not much wind. we are expecting a cold front this week end with some SNOW in for forecast for the first of the week.

My kids are on Spring break next week, it is a little late in the school year as they only have about 6 weeks of school left. I am taking off the week as well. I think we are going to stay close to home though.

Well guess I had better go check the laundy.
Remember, don't be late to supper!

April 10, 2008 - Msg 61871: Thanks for your response, HM. That is quite a savings. The bid quotes we have received so far have varied alot. I don't quite understand why the big difference in builders. Bruce thinks he can build it himself for around 250,000, which would be really good for our area. Real estate has had a big boom down here on the coast. Now, granted, the same size house would be over a million in California, so it's all relative I guess. My only concern about a modular home is that we have a million building code restrictions in our area. You wouldn't believe it. We were thinking about putting a small mobile home on the property for my mother-in-law and they won't allow mobile homes. They won't even let us build a guest house on the property. I am going to check on the modular homes, though. I really don't want to make a big house payment...hard to get around it, though.

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61876: Hi all,
Can you stand a late night venting? Earlier tonight we went to Kai's school for parent/teacher conferences. Kai is doing great academically, no surprise there, but when I saw the teacher take out a little sheet of paper, I kind of had a feeling about what it was going to be, but I was hoping it wasn't.
Yes, it was the same thing I had to deal with last year at Kai's old school(and probably vented to you then, I know I did to Ro); the letter about the schools "human growth and development" program where they teach about certain normal things, and some obviously not so normal things or they wouldn't have to put the "parents have the right to review the materials and/or exclude their child..."yada yada yada. Which is right there a red flag for me, whenever they need a disclaimer.

So I started getting a little tense, and I think the teacher knew it, because in winding down the conference she asked me if I had any questions about anything as it looked like I was "thinking about something".
Well, I didn't want to get discuss it right there in front of Kai, or my wife for that matter, so I said, no.
Then, as if I didn't have enough on my mind at the time, she says they are having a "diversity day" event(and most of you know how I feel about those things and that "certain" groups use them to get their foot in the door) later this month and needed some volunteers to help with it. She said we could think about it.
I'm actually thinking I might volunteer, but I do want to talk to the teacher more about it and about the notification letter. I just hope she is around tomorrow because I really want to get this over with, because I hate having to have this discussion with Kai's teachers. But it happens every year.
I don't really know how far they take these things, and that is what I need to find out. She did say in reference to the human growth and development program, that they don't go into the "birds and bees" part of it. That's good, but there are other things I still don't feel a 7 year old has to be "exposed" to, which I think part of is under the program's curriculum description of "diffent kinds of families".

Oy! I really wish - and maybe it could happen(if I could convince my wife of it)- that we could enroll Kai in the Baptist Academy school they have in our new church. At least I know they would teach from a Godly perspective, and not a worldly one. And not PC either.

I'll have to talk to Kai's heart doctor again, Possum. I don't know if we talked about Kai's dental visits after this last heart appointment, when Kai's condition progressed(and not in the good way).

Have fun with the kids, Big Maude!

STERLING: That's a shame. I agree with BOO's post regarding the diversity day. Not sure why kids Kai's age would need it in any event. Most kids I have ever met are pretty accepting. At that age, prejudices that they may be getting at home haven't really sunk in yet. I wonder if diversity day also will be celebrating families who hold to traditional Christian beliefs? I think I'd volunteer, too. No better way to know what's going on.

Now, I'm hitting the sack for a couple of hours. I'm beat to the socks. I had a patient last night who has bipolar disorder, and she was in a manic phase. She near-bout ran me nutty. She didn't close her eyes all night, and she had enough pain meds on board to knock down a rhino, but it didn't faze her. She talked constantly until she was hoarse, she dressed and redressed her poor little baby at least six times, she rearranged the room, she hit her call bell at least every ten minutes - in short, she was a walking, talking mess, and she wore me to a frazzle. Poor girl, she can't help it, but I swear I was ready to put her in a baggie and put her out on the curb before it was over. I don't know how her husband stands it.

Be blessed, all. --Romeena

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61881: I think a diversity day in elementary school is just like the board book I found at our library. A sweet little book about the things babies need and do. Thankfully, I complained to our children's librarian and she had it removed.

Before I forget, please keep our family, especially Chad, in your prayers this weekend and Monday. Chad goes in for his hernia surgery at 7:30 Monday morning. We finally told him about it this week, and he’s a little nervous. The Mrs. is especially anxious about it. She was able to arrange to have the anesthesiologist that she really wanted, though, so that’s taken the edge off her nerves. (As you may recall, she’s worked op/recovery the last five years so has strong opinions about anesthesiologists.) Anyway, your prayers are mighty coveted and appreciated.

Blessings everyone! I hate to run on and off the Porch but I'm cooking meals for my friends who were in that car accident--they are home from the hospital and neither one can do much for themselves. So, lot's of casseroles and veggie dishes I'll be preparing today. Have a great Friday. mw

I will certainly pray for Chad and all of you, Me-They. I know where your wife is coming from. It's my opinion that the anesthesiologist is the most important person in the room when it comes to surgery. I would absolutely pick out my own in your situation. Some are very talented, some are horrible...I know some of both. When my dad has had surgery in the past I requested a certain anesthesiologist and they were more than gracious to do it and it certainly gave me peace of mind during the procedure. You are blessed to have a smart wife there.

Well, I am off for Sean's appointment with the psychologist. Wish us well!

Boo

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61889: Thanks, everyone. Just so you know who you are, ALYCE/IDELLE! We don't want any "Sybils" lurking on the porch.

My wife would agree with you, BOO. Having watched anesthesiologists at work and having had to recover their patients after surgery, she has strong opinions about the subject. That's why we're having Chad's surgery at the hospital where she used to work even though we probably pass by four others that are closer. Plus, I like the fact that it's a Christian hospital (Catholic nonprofit).

I remember when I was in the hospital a few years ago going through my heart scare that it was very comforting to hear the sisters doing the (quite) morning and late evening prayers over the public address system.

The Mrs. has even thought about going back to school to become a nurse-anesthetist once all the kds are in school. I should probably learn how to spell it first.

RED- AUH20 IS indeed 2 elements, thus his clever name.
Sterling- From our past emails, you know my thoughts, but I would definitely ask to review the material as the slip states and see exactly what it is, then you can decide what to do from there.
As far as diversty day, you may want to also remind them of our country's mottos, on every dollar bill in everyone's pocket: "In God We Trust" and "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many..ONE)
Diversity is nothing but a modern ploy to "divide." As someone said, will that day also include Christian views? We must "stand firm" as the Word says or else are we the salt and light that we are suppose to be?
I heard on talk radio last night that a teacher in Denmark took her class to a mosque to "expose" her kids to diversity, and the imam there called all the kids "dogs" for not being muslims. Angry parents are now up in arms!
It is a strange world right now. OK, sliding box back under porch.
Good to see Maude, MD and all. Racing here !
Prayers for Chad, REV and all,
God bless ,

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61896: Hi all,

Well, I am back from my visit with Kai's teacher. She actually calmed my fears a bit about this whole thing. She was very nice and understanding, and she showed me exactly what things they were having on "diversity day", which seemed by what I saw to focus heavily on helping the kids to understand about disabilities(alot of stuff like using oven mitts to grab small things; stuff like that). Also she talked about a video they plan to watch by Dr. Seuss, about "sgueegies" or something. It's about these creatures who have stars on their bellies, and feel superior to other ones who don't have stars on their bellies. Anyone know anything about that one? They were also having a thing on origami.

I told her about the concerns I had, and she said no, they don't get into anything like that, and she wouldn't teach that. She looked surprised when I told her that they did teach that last year, in Kai's kindergarten.
I am pretty sure she was sincere, because she was finishing my sentences before I even finished what I was saying(not interrupting, but just helping out when I would pause), and saying exactly what I was thinking. Like when I was making a statement about kids not needing to know certain things(like about "alternative lifestyles") at their age, she would agree and add that parents are the ones to make those kinds of choices as to when and how their children learn about those kinds of things.
She made it clear that she doesn't, and wouldn't, teach those things. And that she understands my concerns, and shares my feelings that kids don't need to know these things at their age.

All in all, a far cry from the meeting I had with Kai's teacher last year. I didn't even whip out my exclusion letter I had already written and brought along, just in case I needed it.
I don't know. I had a feeling about this teacher; that she wasn't the kind to expose kids to this, and she kind of reaffirmed that thought with what she was telling me. I hope she is true to her word, and is not just telling me what I want to hear. I don't think she is(telling me what I want to hear).

Thanks for the prayers, Boo. Kai and I actually went to the church after I returned from the school, to bring some more Hawaiian things for their teen get-together thing they are having Saturday that I had forgotten to take before, and on the sign outside, we saw a message about an open house for the Baptist Academy later this month. I told Kai what that was about and she said she wanted to go. I'll have to bring it up to the wife still, though.

And thanks for the comments Opiemom, Me-They, MDC, and anyone else I missed. You all make me feel like I am not so alone in this, as I feel here.

Hey Folks

Just a quick hey and one clarification, I am not now nor have I ever been waxed!

Merri-Thanks for the concern but I'm a here.

Red-Hey! Back at ya.

Big Maude-I think were having the same weather beautiful now but snow this weekend.

The worst part about all this ... ehh "Global Warming" is the colder temperatures and longer winters. Oh well, think I'll go kick a polar bear.

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61900: That's nice to know, Auh2o...about the waxing, that is. I never have, either. I'm more of a tweezer person.

Glad the meeting went well, Sterling and excited about the possibility of you going to the open house at the academy...prayers continue.

I am babysitting my two neices tonight. One is Erin's age and the other is Baby Emily (the one in the photo I sent Ro, with the wreath of roses on her head). I look forward to spending the evening playing with her but she is a very active baby already at age 8 months. If her mom doesn't bring her walker, it could get ugly! I mean, that kid is on the go constantly. You can't even hold her without her squirming around trying to grab ahold of something. The last time I saw her she grabbed me by the cheeks and planted a big, sloppy kiss on me...it was bliss!

Better go....

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61902: Hello Porchsters!
I think I have been going about this all wrong, I read the archives FIRST, with every intention of posting when I am finished reading, then something comes up & I don't get a chance to post. Soooo, I'm posting first, THEN reading this time. might work, yeah, but it might not ;)
Anyways, I'm still alive, just barely some days, but still hanging in there. My beloved Mr Neff got me the most precious puppy for my birthday, a cute as can be, black Toy Poodle! We named her Peggy Sue & she is absolutely adorable, all 1 3/4 pounds of her. I sent pictured to Miss Romeena for her to post if ya'll want to see her.
Jake is still looking for a job, but so far, no luck. He could get hired at McDonald's or Burger King or one of those kinds of places, but he doesn't want to work in food. He has a few interviews next week, so ya'll keep your fingers crossed for him.
Anyway, I'm gonna try to read the archives & see what I need to post about, I agree with ya'll about the tv situation, so I'm not gonna beat a dead horse with that one. Well, I just have to say something about all these stupid reality type shows, one that really gets my goat is Gene Simmons Family Jewels, do people really watch that show?? And the commercials they are showing for that Sarah something or nother movie are just disgusting! I best hush my mouth, I feel my blood pressure going up just thinking about that nonsense.
I'm outta here for a bit. Merri check your email. Tom you too.

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61903: Hi again
Sterling: In reading your posts, I am sensing that your wife is slightly agains Christian schools...is that correct? We are looking into one as well. We just have to be able to afford it! This has been a hard year, I too, have a daughter in 1st grade, and its been different. 9 weeks of school left.. whoo hoo! Now, what am I going to do with them over summer...I'm sure by August I'll be ready for school to be back in session.
Take care everyone
alyce/idelle/allie (what on earth am I going to do about this?)hehe

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61904: I make the same mistake as Mavis by reading the posts first... lately it seems like there has been a lot of talking and long posts, and by the time I'm thru reading, it's time to start dinner or do my laundary or some other such thing, and I plan on coming back to post, but don't. And I work at a place where we can't use the internet during work hours (I guess we're suppose to be working), so anyhow, I'm limited to being on-line before I go to work and after I get home. I don't know why I'm mentioning this, except to explain why I'm giving a belated response to some recent posts.

Boy, the posts from Ro and MW and Boo and MeThey really got to me. Describing incidents in childhood about neighbors, and friends dads, and even strangers walking down the street. I am so sorry that stuff like that happened to you guys, and it makes me so sick to think about all the perverts there are out there. It also made me feel very fortunate, that I had never been thru anything like that. I just don't understand the perverted mind, I guess. Don't they have any control? I wish we could just put them all in one place, and they could just do whatever they wanted to each other. And leave inocent children alone. Anyhow, that's all I'll say about that, since that subject is like, so yesterdays news! (I was delayed in being able to post, and I know we've moved on from the subject)

Next, welcome to Red! I wanted to help pick your name, but alas, that was already done during my absence too. And welcome back to Alyce.

I guess I see the diversity seminars and classes and such in schools a little differently. I see them as a way to show kids that there are so many different people out there, and they're not all the same. We've just all been touched by so many things like Columbine, and other examples of kids and adults teasing and tauting and being violent toward people that aren't like "ourselves", and the schools are trying to teach kids to be accepting. The example of the "two daddy" family, to me doesn't mean they are promoting that lifestyle, but rather giving kids examples of families that they might someday encounter. There's all different types of families in the world, and whether we think what they are doing is right or wrong isn't the point. The diversity stuff is trying to teach tolerance. And tolerance doesn't mean that you have to think what they are doing is right; but that you shouldn't ridicule, or be taunting, or violent towards others. Whether it be that some other kid is fat, or smells funny, or wears weird clothes, or lives in a house with 2 mommies, we should still treat them with respect and not make fun of them. I don't know if this makes sense or not, but basically I think the diversity stuff in schools is a good thing. Afterall, the Christians already teach their kids at home (or should), so why would anything that exposes them to an agenda of being non-violent and non-ridiculing of others that may not be exactly like our own families be a bad thing?

Asa, I plan to plant more stuff tomorrow, so far I've only got peas and onions in. It's been snowing all week, but is suppose to be in the 60's this weekend. What's this about you growing wacky tobacky? I didn't know you touched the stuff.

- Hazel

April 11, 2008 - Msg 61905: I can agree with what you are saying Hazel - with so many children being abused in so called regular families, a two daddy.mommy family might not be necessarily bad. I don't agree with homose^uality or the lifestyle but I also see kids in worse situations than that. I have explained to my kids why I think that it is wrong and we had some talks lately about the so called pregnant man who used to be a woman. I didn't go into detail but I also didn't think that it was right. Unfortunately - our society accepts such behavior by publicizing such events.

Asa - I wondered what was in your toolbelt - it is wacky tobacky!

hm

April 12, 2008 - Msg 61906: I don't want to get into an argument over homos@xuality on here, as I've learned it is a touchy subject. But sorry Hazel, but I prefer a more general form of teaching tolerance, and too often, as I have seen in my own hometown at the high school, those special interest groups take the diversity events as a way to promote their lifestyle, to kids. And then there is a push to promote them to younger and younger kids.
Why do elementary school kids need to know stuff like that? Kids don't need to know the details(and it doesn't have to be "dirty" details) of someone's personal life, and they don't care to.
When I was a kid, people like Charles Nelson Reilly or Paul Lynde were just weird, funny people. Nothing more. When someone(like a teacher) starts to explain to kids, "well, they are like this because...", you ARE delving into the details; the nitty gritty; and putting things in a child's head that needn't be there. And when that is done with no sense of boundaries or morality, like it is in schools, yes, they sort of are promoting it.
It is the parent's right - and luckily Kai's teacher agrees with this - to be able to choose when and how such a discussion will be handled, not the school's.

I feel what is needed to combat the school violence like Columbine is not tolerance training and more tolerance training. Tolerance for tolerance's sake is permissiveness, and that is exactly why those kids do what they do. They're told they have to be tolerant of anything under the sun.
I'll hazard a guess that you are not going to see a decrease in bullying and school violence(in fact, I'll hazard a guess that these things will only increase), regardless of how many "diversity" classes they implement, because what is really missing in these kids is a moral compass. They don't know which way to turn and their compasses are spinning like mad, because they are being told that nothing is out of bounds. Unless it has to do with God or morality, of course.

Sorry Hazel, I'm not picking on you. You have every right to your opinions as I do mine. And I appreciate you sharing yours.

Alidellie(how about that for a name?;)), I don't know if my wife is against Christian schools(we even looked into another one when we lived here before), but she just tends to fall for some of the PC stuff, I guess, and sometimes the wanting to teach Kai tolerance(there's that word again! ;)) works against what she might feel to be brainwashing by religious schools if she is in that environment in too large a capacity. What did I just say? I must be tired. :)
...ok, so maybe she does have a little something against Christian schools. But she has also said in the past that she wants Kai to have that foundation that a Christian school could bring, so I don't know.
Heck, she finally compromised and started going to a Baptist church, so I guess anything is possible. I hope it is.

Well, goodnight porch. I need to get some sleep(obviously).
And Hazel, I really hope you were not offended by anything I said up there. I really didn't mean any.

April 12, 2008 - Msg 61909: I just love this porch and everyone on it. Hazel, I hear you and I agree that taunting and violence should never be tolerated in school. My own son has been a victim of it at his young age. I think I told all of you about how he was picked on and called gay in his last school. He was actually threatened by a boy who told him that he knew where he lived and would get him. He was only 11 but he has some ways about him that seem kind of effiminate. The boy who threatened him with harm (whow was in high school) was expelled permanantly from the school. Tolerance to the differences of others absolutely has to be taught but I really doubt that the school would be very affective at it for the reasons Sterling talked about. It needs to be known that there is a zero tolerance for that kind of thing, though. Also, I think that if you start teaching kids at a very young age about mom/mom, dad/dad families, you are going to have to open up the subject of homos#xuality, perhaps before they are ready because kids will always ask questions about what they perceive as different. They are going to want to know "why". I guess I am one of those old-fashioned types who want to keep my little ones little as long as possible. I had to explain it early to Sean because of some gay family members who attended a family function and one of my sis-in-laws had to say something about them in front of Sean. I felt like it forced me to explain before he needed to know, but he had questions and I always answer his questions about things. Erin, doens't know anything yet, though. When she asks, I'll be ready.

Sterling, I think you absolutely hit the nail on the head (very well said, especially for someone who was sleepy at the time). You know, sometimes when I read your opinions and posts, I feel very proud, kind of like a big sister would feel. God be with you as you navigate what is best for your family and may the Lord always be glorified in your life.

Have to go get Erin off to her t-ball game.
