I wonder if those that are always trying to do as little as possible for as much as possible will ever understand that they wouldn't always need to be out finding new people to rip off if they had some reliable return customers more than happy to support their business?

HM and Ro, I am so in agreement with you all. I, too, am amazed by the numbers of children I see out at Walmart late at night. What really annoys me is the folks fussy and slapping babies and toddlers who are crying or being disagreeable. I want to say, "That baby should be at home in bed" NOt sure how to change it. Because those children are learning how to parent from their parents. I don't like government intervention in private lives, but people need to be taught how to parent.

Hahaha! Me-They, you crack me up. And I couldn't agree more. When I bought little Starr, I had to have her spayed and produce proof, before the breeder would give me the registration application. Why? Because she has a minor flaw (slight overbite) which would disqualify her in a show, and the breeder is responsible enough to identify that and request that the dog be removed from the gene pool, in order to maintain and improve the blood lines. Because of that, I was able to purchase Starr for about half what I would have paid for "show-quality". It doesn't matter to me, she's exactly what I wanted and I'd never have shown her anyway, but the breeder is being careful, and I appreciate that. She weeds out bad temperament as well, which is why I was able to get a puppy that has such a sweet nature.
Certainly I don't advocate such as that for people, but I've often thought that a series of parenting classes might be good. I wouldn't want to see it made mandatory (too much big brother) but if a monetary incentive was offered, it could be cost-effective in the long run. It could be offered at intervals - infant, toddler, pre-school, elementary and middle school. By high school, either the parents are in control or they're not. The curriculum could be geared toward the greatest needs of the child in each of those stages, and obviously, elementary school would stress the importance of parental involvement and support. Oh, well, I guess it's just a dream. However, I do think that a mandatory class could be put in place for the parents of children just entering school. You want your kid in school? Come to class and learn what your responsibility is, and how we can work together in your child's best interests. That much could and should be required, in my opinion.
Well, I'm off to console my poor little penned-up puppy. She's not a happy girl today. --Romeena

Oh good golly miss molly. Did M-T hit the nail on the head. The two parental pet peeves he listed make me ballistic. I also love the parents at my daughter's elementary school that sit in their cars chain smoking with their music blasted and when their ashtrays get too full to shove any more butts into, they open the door to empty their trays right there in the parking lot where children tromp through to get to their vehicles. Yeah, I love that one. Never mind the fact that all over the campus are signs in bold print stating "NO SMOKING ON SCHOOL PROPERTY." And also never mind the fact what kind of example they are setting for very impressionable youngsters.
The vast majority of Teachers are not the problem in this country. Parents are. And in some cases, I use the term "parents" very loosely.

None of us are perfect parents. But it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts or learning to understand that beating kids is bad, putting their health at risk is bad, and letting them do whatver the heck they want is bad. No, it's not necessarily just misunderstanding, it's laziness.
By the way, speaking of not being perfect, I subscribe to the Familyman webiste, which is a Christian site for dads. I love (and live) their motto: "I'm a great dad. Except when I'm not."

Evenin', all. Yep, it's windy here in the Dallas area, but I haven't seen anything like 100 mph winds. It has rained all day - a birdbath that started out nearly empty is now overflowing, so I'm guessing at least 2" of rain, probably more. It's chilly too, at 54. That may not seem cold to some of you, but if you could see what I'm seeing out this window, it looks a lot colder than that. There are four doves sitting on a power line, all huddled together. They look miserable, poor things.
Speaking of parents smoking around kids (ugh!), I used to do pediatrics for a while, and it was just heartbreaking. Parents would bring these little wheezing, choking, practically limp kids to the ER, and soon they'd arrive on my floor - diagnosis asthma. The child would reek of cigarettes, as did the parents. We'd get the kid into a clean hospital gown, the parents would gradually air out since there was no place for them to smoke, and miracles would happen. In a couple of hours, the child would be fine. Asthma? Yes, a reaction to the parents' cigarette smoke! One of our pediatricians was lobbying in the state capitol for legislation to get the act of smoking around a child designated as child abuse, and prosecutable. He never got it done, but he tried. If you could see one of the little guys in the throes of an asthma attack, you'd agree with him. I've talked to many a parent about it, and you get a glassy stare, a mumbled "uh-huh" and off they go, oblivious.
My husband's family lives in Michigan, and they claim they have two seasons also. Winter, and Road Repair. I think they're right. The freezing weather makes the ground heave and the roads just fall apart. I've seen potholes in those roads that you could lose a sports car in.
Well, back under my blanket. It's cold in here! I'll be glad when the carpets finish drying. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Sorry about the twice-chewed cabbage above, but my DSL was going down at the time - one minute I was connected, then not, then connected again. I couldn't tell if the post went through or not. It's been down all evening, and I figured it was the storm. I finally called tech support just now, held for a full 25 minutes, and finally got through. The tech was wonderful - cheerful and funny, and best of all, knew what she was doing and had me up and running in a few minutes. Bless her! It's amazing how much we (I) depend on the computer. It's just so true - invention is the mother of necessity.
All the water has caused the GFCI to the backyard circuit to trip, guess a junction box got swamped or something, so that will be a phone call to Ted. He's coming over anyway to fix that cracked door, but I'll let him know about this, so he can have the necessary parts and tools on his truck. Sure is dark out there without those landscape lights. Spooky.
The wind is really kicking up, whipping things around pretty badly. I just remembered my prized wine-colored iris, which has a long bud stalk up and about to open. I'm afraid it will be broken, so I think I'll go out there and stake it. It's out front, next to the front sidewalk so I won't have to get in any water, and I've got a good stout dowel I can stake it with. I'd surely hate for it to be broken off before it even gets a chance to open. So - off I go.
Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

I am coming up on my 5th anniversary here soon and I treasure my time here and the friendships I have made. If all we talked about here was TAGS, I wouldn't even come back tomorrow. If that's what I wanted or needed I would go elsewhere. I have learned so much from the varying opinions I have heard and am a better person for it. Please don't stop sharing your opinions, concerns, angers, fears. For some crazy reason (and I as yet have not figured it out), this forum fosters an intimacy between friends that is hard to find. I believe it is healthy. How wonderful to have a support group who is going to be there (thanks to Floyd) everyday and always offer a prayer, kind word, words of wisdom and encouragement. I value that greatly and love the porch just the way it is. M-T, you are such a joy. Your comments are so funny at times! Well, I guess I could say that about all of you.
Regarding the homeschooling issue in Califoria, as a homeschooler without a teaching certificate, it really concerns me. In my own case, I would rather both my children be in private school at this time but due to Sean's difficulties, I truley believe I am doing what is best for him by teaching him at home. I would hate to lose the right to do what I think is best for my own child. I also think that California has shot itself in the foot on this issue because the public school system is such a mess and homeschoolers will be putting their kids in private or charter schools in droves rather than place them in the public school system. I pray it doesn't happen in Texas (or anywhere else, for that matter).
I have more I would like to comment on but I think I will try to go back to bed for awhile. I was up alot last night with a cough...I think from all the campfire smoke I breathed this week!

Homemaker, I read your comment on the mother who took her kids to Walmart to get those movies the moment they were released at midnight. I've never understood people who have to buy things the moment they come out. I mean, it's not like they are going to run out!
It's pretty sad if buying something "first" is what gives your life meaning and takes precedent over things like, oh, say, giving your kids their needed rest.
I feel the same way about people who simply need to go to a movie when it first hits the theatre. Personally, I try to avoid the theatres on opening day. Why would you want to go and see, and try to enjoy, a movie you've been looking forward to seeing, with a big crowd of people crunching popcorn and yacking all around you?! I'll wait until the fanfare, and the crowds, die down a bit, thank you.
Oh no, Chuck! I hope there wasn't too much damage on your end of the porch, and that everyone is ok. You don't live in Texas, do you? I heard there was considerable flooding in some areas there.

Well Me-They, there is a theory out there that all the Alzheimer's has something to do with consumption of aluminum. Some nutritionists warn about using products containing aluminum (like antiperspirants) and cooking in aluminum cookware. I don't know if there is real truth to that. My dad worked in an aluminum plant for 35 years and he is 83 now and has most of his mind (I am being generous, though...hehe).
I hear you, Sterling. I am the kind of person who avoids crowds and confusion. It's funny, there has been a time or two during vacation or in the summer when I had the kids out late to walmart or something, and the whole time I am looking over my shoulder and feeling guilty about having them out so late! I was hoping I wouldn't run into someone I knew. As far as movies go, I usually wait until they come out on DVD if I want to see them. Sometimes the kids want to see something in the theater but that is not often. Horton Hears A Who is coming out this week and I think I might take them to that one. I think it will be a good one and is rated 'G'.
I forget where Chuch lives, but his son, daughter-in-law and new grandbaby live in Texas.

BOO: We're going to take the kids to "Horton." I looked it up at Pluggedin (Focus on the Family) and it gives it good marks for familiy viewing.
I've heard that about aluminum, too, but have recently learned it's a myth. So I suppose the jury is still out, but I expect is has at least something to do with all the chemicals we ingest. The Mrs. and I have been trying to be a little more vigilant about the plastics we use. Some are okay, but some leach dangerous chemicals into food. (I was very suprised to learn that the plastic wrap that is used for cheese singles is infused with toxic carcinogens in order to make it flexible. That stuff is nasty, anyway, but imagine!)
Anyway, for anyone who may be interested, I am posting a handy guide that I found on the net about plastics. The numbers correspond to the recycling numbers found on plastics:
1 PET or PETE (polyethlyne terephalate) rated ok
2 HDPE (high-density polyethlene) rated ok
3 PVC (polyvinyl chloride) Avoid
4 LDPE (low-density polyethylene) rated good
5 PP (polypropylene) rated good
6 PS (polystyrene) Avoid
7 Other (polycarbonate, nylon, acrylic) Avoid

Me-They, your educashun was worth every penny! This is good information. However, as a general rule, I just avoid plastics completely in the microwave. I have the impression that being subjected to heat is a factor in the release of the dangerous chemicals. I heat only in glass or in some cases paper, and I cover the food with a paper towel. Since the towel tends to droop into the food (yuck) I keep a box of wooden toothpicks on top of the micro, and stick one or two into the food like a tiny tent pole to support the towel, and it works.
My goodness, homemaker. While I was sitting here wondering if my goldfish survived our rainstorm, you were out moving goats into a trailer to avoid a flooded creek. I guess I'm pretty sheltered, but you know what? I envy your lifestyle, I really do. I'd love to go back to the country. Probably couldn't hold up to the work it takes, but it would be fun to try once again. Oh well. As Paul said, "I have learned in whatsoever state I find myself, therein to be content." And I am. I still play in the dirt, just not so much of it. I still have critters around me, it's just that God takes care of them for the most part, I just supplement His provision. The only one who is fully dependent on me is Starr, and I don't need trailers or barns or fencing, just a couple of pillows on the floor or space on my lap. Even her food doesn't require much storage -it's kept in a canister on my countertop! The stages and phases of life - they do keep a-changing!

Oh, I forgot, with easter quickly approaching, I'm sure Andy would like this website. It is worth a visit:
www.biblia.com/prophecies/
It shows 25 OT prophecies of the passion that were fulfilled during holy week.
BOO- your rehab girls may gain from a print out of these. There are some that i didnt even know about, like the closing up of the East Gate... that since it is now bricked up, the Messiah HAD TO have already come! Very interesting!
HAPPY HOLY WEEK!

My boss forwarded this to me, and I thought I'd share:
WE ARE IN TROUBLE!
The population of this country is 300 million.
160 million are retired.
That leaves 140 million to do the work.
There are 85 million in school.
Which leaves 55 million to do the work.
Of this there are 35 million employed by the federal government.
Leaving 15 million to do the work.
2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden.
Which leaves 12.2 million to do the work.
Take from that total the 10.8 million people who work for state and city governments.
And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.
At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals.
Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.
That leaves just two people to do the work.
You and me.
And there you are, sitting on your butt,
At your computer, reading jokes.
Nice. Real nice.
Thought that was cute!

Me again. I came across this Teddy Roosevelt quote from 1919 and it reminded me of something you might say, ROMEENA. Anyway, I don’t follow his line of thinking all the way on all subjects, but TR is one of my heroes.
“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.
But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American….There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag….We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language….and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is loyalty to the American people.”

While I'm busy cut-and-pasting today, how about this from Wikipedia:
"[Rev. John] Lathrop's fame, more than his life, continues to this day. His direct descendants in America number more than 80,000, including U.S. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, Governors Mitt Romney and George W. Romney, Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, Benedict Arnold, President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Vice President Henry A. Wallace, Jane Stanford, wife of the founder of Stanford University and inventor Eli Whitney, among others, and AUH2O."

Me-They Is that whole loon business just your way of saying that, I'm just a bird in this world? I just love reading about my Grandpa. He was considered a nonconformist, as well as, one of the first Baptist's. He actually followed Henry Jacob in leading the First Independent Church of England. There was a book written about him called "Exiled." However, even though I loved reading it, it was one of those historical novel things, that always leave me wondering.

Good evening, all. Such goings-on! I can't leave you people alone for a minute. Oh, by the way, I came across some trivia that I thought I'd annoy Me-They with, but on second thought, it probably won't annoy him at all, since it actually supports his foot phobia. Here goes: A pair of human feet contains approximately 250,000 sweat glands. Now, if that's not yucky enough for you, here's more: Each one of your feet is inhabited by about a trillion bacteria. Mercy! No wonder Me-They doesn't care for the steamy, germy critters. I'm about to become a convert.
Well, still got lots to do to get this house shaped up for my kids' visit. Just found out that they're not coming Thursday night, but rather will be here around noon on Friday. That gives me more time, so is actually a bit of a relief. I just don't have the energy I used to have, dagnab it!

Anyone can come and visit as long as they have muck boots, own their own pitchfork and do not mind manual labor. Because of all the rain (and snow) we have had - I walk about a mile everyday to get back to the pasture where we house the goats. It is at a different location than where we live (about 3 miles away). We will be building there this summer so I will have a nice long lane (void of any cars) to walk and exercise. I am already getting ready to start my garden plot - once the weather cooperates. Then if you come - you must bring a hoe to help in the garden. I am planting beans, corn, taters, summer squash, maters and pumpkins. I need to freeze corn for the winter and can beans for the winter as well. I also need to put lots of mater juice up as well. Yes, I will be busy. Looking at fruit trees to plant as well. They won't bear what I need this year but will so in future years. If you would have told me that I would be doing this 15 years ago - I would have laughed in your face. Don't really trust the food source like I used too anymore - I'll just do my own.
M-T - loved your quotes today. And whoever quoted Red Green - thank you - I just love that show!

Gotta run -- mucho to do today, getting ready for my daughter and family. They'll be here at noon tomorrow, and I still have to finish getting the house shaped up, and go to the grocery store. Hey there POSSUM. Thank you for the concern--that is very kind and considerate of you. You're right, there's lots of flooding but I'm ok. We were without power though, and the road connecting our neighborhood to a highway was impassible until yesterday. Got our power back on this afternoon. I was watching the 5 o'clock news this evening and recognized an area outside of St. Louis that crews had filmed. It was my best friend's road that leads into his driveway! They were doing 2 emergency rescues. He and his family are safe and secure, thank the Lord. But other people are ignoring barriers and attempting to cross washed out roads or getting swept away by the rapidly moving water. Prayers for all the people who are affected by these floods. It truly is devastating.
ASA, so glad to have you back. You were missed! Hey, I heard that they're playing "A Monster Ate Minnesota" at the Grand. Should be a good show.
Well, if I don't make it to the Porch before Sunday, Happy Easter to everyone. Hope you have a wonderful day with your families and friends! mw
