Hey to the porch.
I guess I'll root for the Giants. I have no particular preference either way, so I'll go for the under-dogs.
As far as politics go, I'm neither "R" nor "D". I've always voted for who I thought would do the best job. And, boy, it's a hard choice this time. I'm leaning towards Romney. I watched a show the other night, a lecture by someone named Hugh Hewitt, or something like that. Anyway, it was very informative, and gave a lot of insight into Mitt Romney. I'm thinking he'd be an ok president. As for the "D" choice, I'm not sure about that yet. Obama is here in Boise tonight, and is speaking tomorrow morning. I sort of like him too, but, I'm still pretty unsure. And believe it or not, there's been some things I've liked lately about Hillary too. It's interesting, that's for sure. I felt bad for John Edwards. He was pretty much over shadowed, I think. I'm not sure I really liked him; but still, I don't think he had a fair shot in the media.

Well, Boo, I'm sure sorry you've got that saber-toothed bug now. I guess I should be thanking the Lord, because so far this winter I haven't even had a sniffle. Yes, I took the flu shot. I have a dear friend - LaRue, who lost her husband two years ago - is in the hospital. It started out like a sinus infection, then her nose, upper lip, actually pretty much her whole face swelled up, she developed thrush in her mouth, and she is a sick little chicken. The bug has been identified as staph, but don't know if it's the really bad staph, the MRSA. She's been on IV antibiotics for about five days now, and not really getting much better. Today they did some cardiac tests because she has a bad valve like I do, and they're afraid of the possibility that the staph could colonize that valve. It often does. Please pray for her - she's really sick, and she's scared. This is the first bad illness she's had since she's been alone, and I know how she feels.
Beautiful bright sunshine here today too, so I suppose our timid little groundhog ran back in the ground, and now we'll be having six more weeks of winter, like the rest of the country. Argh. I'm ready to start planting things! My pansies are blooming beautifully, so at least I have that.
Well, Starr is ready for her overdue nap - I had to get my hair cut so couldn't nap with her at three. Guess we'll do it now. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

The last time was just before closing and they never received the order. Erin is fine today and so is my stomach, just feeling weak and a little achy. Thanks for the prayers, MDC. And stand me straight and tall.
I look to God for patience
To help me give things time;

Thank you, Tom. I think most of us, probably all of us, needed that today.
I'm headed for my grandson's birthday party (he's seven) at one of those kiddie pizza places, not Chuck E. Cheese, but similar. Oh joy. No, I'm kidding - it will be fun, I'm sure. The kids have a ball. Then we're going out to my son's house to watch the super bowl game. Personally, I couldn't care less who wins, but the others will be all excited, and I'll have fun watching them. Will take Starr with me out there, so she can play with Bentley. In spite of the difference in their size (his head is as big as she is), they're good buddies. Bentley so sweetly pulls all his punches when playing with her, is very gentle with her. He plays rowdy and rough with the kids, but with Starr, he's very careful. He's such a good boy.

February 04, 2008 - Msg 60056:
Well, I have to admit, that was some game! I'm really not a football fan, but it was a good game, I got interested, was yelling right along with everyone else, and had a good time. I was glad to see the Giants win. Starr had a great time playing with Bentley, even had a brief but friendly conversation with Old Kitty, and was rudely snubbed by the two younger cats. She was so tired that on the way home, as we rode in Jerry and Eloise's back seat, she fell asleep on my shoulder and was limp as a rag all the way home.
Update on my friend LaRue - she is getting worse. She has been moved to CCU, one lung is partially collapsed, she has an infection in her blood which they haven't yet been able to identify and it doesn't seem to be responding to antibiotics. Please continue to pray for her. She's terrified.
Boo, while it would be highly unusual for a child Sean's age to have a heart attack, it certainly is possible, as Opiemom said. You will definitely want to have him checked, at least get an EKG done, but my guess (and it's ONLY a guess) is it's not cardiac. Does he by any chance have acid reflux? Also, who first used the term "chest pain and pressure" - you or him? Often when discussing physical symptoms with a child who doesn't know a lot of terminology, we ask questions like "When your chest hurts, do you ever feel any pressure too?" It's so easy to plant things like that in a kid's mind without even knowing you're doing it. Also, someone who has an anxiety disorder will often focus on and even magnify little physical symptoms, concerned that something is seriously wrong with them. In an adult, it can become chronic hypochondria. In an impressionable and anxious child, it just becomes a multiplicity of symptoms that will, as you said, make you want to scream, and will seem like "there's always something." Hang in there. Get him checked out, for your own peace of mind and his, and then try to help him with his anxieties. There you go, that's free advice, and probably worth just about what you paid for it.
Be blessed. --Romeena

Yes, I didn't mean that he was having a heart attack and yes, it would be unusual I would just have him checked out. LIke Ro said (who's much more medically knowledgeable than me) the dr and other personnel will ask the right questions to know if it is something just in his mind or something more serious.
I've not posted much lately. I've read quite a bit though. Been busy with life. My oldest went to the pulmo. about his fainting. There is a slight possibility of tracheamalacia (sp?) Anyway we are having a bronchoscopy done Friday at 9. The drs. are still concerned because he's young and fainting or getting dizzy and breathless on exertion.

February 04, 2008 - Msg 60059:
Prayers for your son, Opiemom. May they find the problem and deal with it speedily.
Thanks for the advice. Ro, I agree with you and I want to think it's just anxiety related but this is how our conversation went; he told me that he wanted to let me know that lately, when he runs or does anything strenuous, he feels "chest pain and a pressure in the middle of my chest". I had not asked him any questions. All I asked after that was where the pain was and he pointed to the center of his chest and I asked if it went away after he stopped his activity. That's it. He did do some exercises yesterday evening and they were strenuous for him, and he said he had no chest pain, so who know. I do know that he has gastric reflux, and also am thinking that at the time he having the chest pain, he also had some bronchitis. I am trying not to overreact and rush to the doctor..just see what happens and keep him on his diet, do some walking, etc. Sometimes with a kid like Sean, it's really hard to determine when something needs to be looked into further, and not. He does tend to magnify symptoms and most of the time I just ignore those kinds of things so that i don't encourage him to stress over those things.
I am still feeling a bit sick-ish this morning. I didn't get the rest I needed this weekend and am paying for it now. We had a really interesting weekend. Our church sponsored a youth speaker to come and speak to kids in the local schools. His name is Ken Freeman, out of San Antonio, I think. He holds summer camps for youth, etc. He has quite a testimony. We had quite a few unchurched folks make decisions to follow Christ and when he spoke in our church on Sunday morning, we had 17 adults come forward, many who had been attending church for a long time but had not made that decision. Our church is fairly small, usually 100-150 on a Sunday morning so it was a surprise because most were people that I saw most sunday mornings. The kind of folks who come on Sunday and then you really never get involved. Anyway, it was really something. One man was a 65 yr old that has been attending with his wife for years but always kind of stayed on the outside of things. Around Christmas time, he had heart surgery and almost died. It made an impact on him, of course and he decided he needed to be saved. What a joy it was to see him come forward, with his son and daughter-in-law, also! It was quite a church service. Wish you could have been there. We were just all in tears. Great weekend and lots of follow-up work to do.
I'm sorry to hear that LaRue is getting worse. Continued prayers for her.
Where is Merri Weather? I wonder if she is still having trouble getting on the porch?

Good morning, all. Opiemom, it has been my experience that mothers (and fathers) who have sick children get medically knowledgeable pretty quick, especially in this day of the internet. You start tracking your child's illness or symptoms, and it's amazing what you can learn. True, you can pick up a lot of misinformation as well, but most people manage to weed that stuff out.
MDC, LaRue has had serial blood cultures done, which usually involves a sensitivity component as well. Docs rarely order just a plain culture. They have identified staph, and are now working on a differential culture to pinpoint just which staph it is.
You're right, the medical doctors historically have laughed off the natural remedies, but more and more of them are accepting naturals as adjunct therapy. My cardiologist originally just tolerated my use of Co-Q-10, but then he saw measurable results in the performance of my heart. He now orders it for other patients, and told me I wasn't taking enough, to increase the dose! He also approves of the garlic I take for my blood pressure. My endocrinologist knows I take cinnamon and chromium for my blood sugar, and he ordered alpha lipoic acid - I had never heard of it. Now, none of these things are going to control my problems alone, but they support and assist, and I wouldn't be without them. More and more, I'm hearing of doctors who at least tolerate the natural remedies, and others who will actually suggest them. Progress is being made, because you can't argue with success.
It is useful to consider the origins and actions of some of the prescribed drugs, too. Lanoxin, to regulate the heart rhythm, is a trade name for digitalis which was originally derived from the foxglove plant. I believe it's synthesized now, which is why it's so much cheaper than it used to be, but it's still the same molecular structure. Insulin is a case in point. What could be more natural than to replace the insulin that someone's body no longer produces? All the cinnamon and stuff in the world isn't going to help if there's no insulin made in the body, because the herbals simply help the body to use insulin, they don't provide it. So, it must be replaced, no choice. We used to use pork-based insulin, literally processed out of the pancreases of pigs, obtained at meat-packing plants. It's now manufactured synthetically, and frankly, I prefer that option! No offense to the porkers, (I love bacon!) but the synthetics are just a bit more esthetically acceptable.
Well, this grows too long. Be blessed, everyone! --Romeena

Hey, REV. Glad you're home, safe and sound, and I'll bet Mrs. Rev is glad to have you back, for sure! It's good to hear that the tour went well. God is indeed good to us.
Well, little Starr is tired, keeps coming and putting her little foot on my ankle, which is the signal for "let's go to bed, mom." She's such a sweet little thing, so cuddly. She says howdy! --Romeena

REV said about Jesus, "...and you better believe that I love Him". You put a smile on my face this morning, REV, thanks. I love hearing someone say that. How could we not love Him when He has done so much for us?
I have to tell you that I am about ready to pull up my soapbox and "vent". Would that be ok with all of you? It's not really a moulage, just a frustration. Last night Sean was having trouble sleeping (which is common with the meds he is on now), and so he asked if I would watch some Nick-
At-Night with him. There was a sitcom coming on about an Hispanic family...sorry don't remember the name but it stars a well-known Hispanic commedian (George Lopez, maybe?). I told Sean it might not be appropriate for him or for me, for that matter, to which he replied, "All kids my age watch it". I said, "Well, it still may not be appropriate but I'll tell you what, we will watch it together and let's see how many times families are portrayed in a positive light, and how much immorality is portrayed and I will let you be the judge". "Cool", was his reply. Within the first 10 minutes of viewing, a mother-in-law committed adultery on her husband, and the main character's mom (who was probably 60) admitted to getting "the Clap" from her boyfriend. Sean got the message after I explained to him what the clap was. Remember when Nick-At-Night was full of The Donna Reed Show and Leave It To Beaver?...Boy, have times changed and let me tell you, be very careful after 10pm. Watch what your kids are watching on TV. Seemingly safe channels, are not safe anymore. Now to my next frustration. After Sean went to bed, I decided to do a little channel surfing just to see what else was on. I came across a "reality" show with some guy who I think is the lead singer of "Guns and Roses"...no offense to any fans, but this poor guy was probably at least my age, still had bleached, long hair and was dressed like a teenager. The show was about about of young women who wanted to win the chance to be "his woman". Most of them could have been his daughter and they were barely dressed and doing things I would never even mention. I really had a hard time believing what I was seeing and I'll bet you the audience that watches that show is made up of mostly young kids. I think it was on VHS. One thing that really bothered me was that during all of this, the guy was wearing a t-shirt with a cross on it. I just don't get why the networks allow these kinds of shows and why the sponsors would support it. I fear for the kids of this generation who are bombarded with s*xual messages through the media and music. We expect them to abstain and just say "no" but society is failing kids, hugely. God help us.
Ok, I'm finished.

AUH2O: But the important questions are, Calvinist or Armenian? And young Elvis or fat Elvis?
Don't blame you on the "Ghost Rider" ban. No matter what's in the movie, it's premise is based on some bad mojo. (It was a comic book when I was a kid!)
BOO: Who you calling fat? You can rant to us anytime!
Anyone giving anything up for Lent?
Glad to hear from you, REV.

Good morning, all. Boo, I'm right there with you. TV Land has brought back the Hillbillies, but they've also thrown in "Just Shoot Me", along with a bunch of lame movies that they repeat over and over. I find that much of the time I'm on Animal Planet, Discovery, Science, History and Hallmark. You know, it's really ironic. When our kids were growing up, they would lament about how all their friends had cable TV, and we didn't. My husband refused to get cable, because of the dirty movie channels they carried. One son argued that you didn't have to subscribe to those channels, and my husband responded that when our friends saw that box sitting on our TV, they wouldn't have any way of knowing what channels we subscribed to, and he didn't want anyone to think we would watch such garbage. So we went without cable for years. Here's the irony - these days, if you don't have cable or the dish, there's not much hope of finding decent programming, because the networks rarely run anything you'd want to watch. So, where we used to avoid cable or dish because of objectionable programming, it has evolved to where you need cable or the dish to gain a few options for acceptable programming! The devil must be just laughing his head off.
Whenever I hear the name Calvin, I think of that very cute comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes. It's not drawn anymore, and I'm sorry. It was a favorite of mine. There are collections of the strip in book form, and I think I have them all. Calvin was just adorable, and the concept of Hobbes, the stuffed toy tiger/real tiger was just inspired. I loved that Hobbes was so smart, gave Calvin good advice most of the time and watched out for him, but was a little kid at heart himself and often got into mischief too. Great stuff!
Well, off I go. Errands to run, chores to do. Be blessed, everyone! --Romeena
February 05, 2008 - Msg 60098:
I love Calvin and Hobbes, too!
Very true about the cable. We got cable because network prime-time viewing was getting so decadent. We wanted things what were then acceptable viewing channels for the family (Nic and TVLand).

Boo- Your vent is exactly why I will not have cable and will NEVER have cable or dish. Look at the situation, unlike something like taxes that you MUST pay, cable or dish is still an option, and your monthly payment supports all the gar-bage channels! Instead of paying 50 a month or whatever, just buy two seasons of a good shows per month and watch those. Yes, the devil IS laughing because we Christians make up all these excuses.
I get nine free channels in the Phoenix area and i usually stick to sports, news and game shows. Otherwise I pop in a dvd of tags or Bob Newhart or Wyatt Earp etc.and watch those. Kinda like music, like John L Imagine, when the lyrics sink in, one can see how we were duped! OK soapbox back under porch.
RO- good points on the drugs. Also, why did we stop using all the sulfa drugs?

I pray all are well. We're hanging in here in GA. This weather is insane. One day it's snowing a few days later we're in t-shirts!
Romeena- I got your email. It works for me! I'm so sorry for your friend! I hope she feels better real soon.
Tom- You were right about the Giants!
Boo- Are you getting better? Bryson and my throats are a bit scratchy. My nephew has strep. I guess it's that time of year. They thought I was having a heart attack in Dec, but it was esphogeal spasms caused by my reflux.
Hey Auh20!

Hey to everyone else. I have got to get going. Y'all take care!

Well, I'd like to be that disciplined, but I'm not. I enjoy Animal Planet too much, and the Science, Discovery, Travel, and History channels, among others. Also you can catch some really good country gospel shows now and then. I use Dish Network, and enjoy all the technical features that provides - easy recording, pre-set recording, rewind and pause features, and of course, the channels I mentioned. My subscription doesn't include the bad movie channels, of course. Thank goodness, they still allow you to pick and choose.
Time Warner is not a company I enjoy supporting, but they are my computer cable provider. It's pretty hard to avoid supporting unsavory companies these days. Many companies are so diversified, that you just never know. You may buy a cake mix and be supporting some affiliate company that would curl your toes if you only knew. I just try to keep my own personal standards up, and hope for the best.
My son is back in the hospital. More problems with his kidneys, because of the liver failure. His liver is healing, but very, very slowly, and it's affecting his kidneys. The doctor says if the liver will ever turn the corner and get better, his kidneys will be okay too. That's my prayer.
Well, guess I'll go rustle up some "vittles" around here. I think I'll broil some chicken legs, make a hash-brown potato casserole, and open a can of greens. I love that potato casserole! I heat a package of frozen diced potatoes in the microwave, saute an onion in some butter and stir into the warm potatoes. Add a can of chopped green chilies, a cup or two of buttermilk, a generous dollop of sour cream and some grated cheddar cheese. (No, this is not a heart-healthy casserole - just sue me.) I pour it all into a buttered casserole dish, and bake until it starts to bubble, then put more cheese on top and bake until it's melted and bubbly. Honeys and dears, that is one good potato casserole.
Be blessed, and Starr says howdy! --Romeena

February 05, 2008 - Msg 60111:
Well, hey, I'm glad you all liked the sound of that recipe. Trust me, one key is to put the frozen diced potatoes in a big glass bowl and run them in the micro for at least five minutes. Stir a couple of times. The idea is to have the whole mixture pretty hot before it goes in the oven, otherwise it doesn't cook evenly. If you think you just can't stand to put buttermilk in it, you can substitute a can of some sort of cream soup. Actually, I started using buttermilk a while back when I was out of cream soup and didn't want to make a trip to the store. There sat the buttermilk in the fridge, and I thought "well, why not?" It worked well, and I never use soup
anymore. Oh, and you'll want to toss in a tsp or so of salt.
Well, off I go. Starr is begging for a cuddle, and I have just the lap for her. Be blessed, all! --Romeena

Hi porch pals. I tried to post earlier, but I am apparently still having problems with my computer. I'm not sure if it's my computer, or part of the problem with the server that we all had last week. Hopefully, this will post.
Reading everyones posts, I'm struck by how much we have in common, as far as entertainment goes. We may have different beliefs, and be from different walks of life, but a lot of us have a lot in common. Many of us are huge fans of the James Herriot books. I know Asa and Romeena and myself are, and I'm sure there are others. Also, Romeena mentioned today, she loves Calvin and Hobbes. Me too! I have all of the comic book collections also. Every one! MDC mentioned Newhart. I love those too. It's funny how people that love TAGS also have alot of other things they love in common with each other. As far as cable goes, we've got it too. I watch TV land (if there's something good... which is getting fewer and farther between), and I watch Halmark channel. Also Turner classic movie channel(can't remember the exact name of it). Also, there's a couple of other old movie channels that I watch. I can usually catch an old Shirley Temple, or Fred Astair or something like that. But, granted, there's many times when there's nothing but trash on, and that's when I just read a book or put in a DVD. My kids got me season one and two of "I love Lucy" for Christmas, and I've been watching that a lot lately. Funny, I've never been a huge "I love Lucy" fan, but watching it on DVD seems different. Especially when you can watch it from the very beginning, and see how the characters all evolved. Good stuff.
Well, I'm going to see if this posts. 10-4
