80? Holy cow.
We are at 18 this morning and are experiencing a dreaded canyon wind event. My work place is right near the mouth of Ogden canyon and so far this morning we have had a steady 40 mph wind with some gusts up to 65 mph. You combine that with 18 degree temps and you know what you've got? Cold! Dang cold! We get 2 or 3 of these a year. They last most of the day and I gotta tell ya, I just hate em. The wind does a lot of damage and don't even think of trying to spend much time out working in it. Oh well, I don't know whats worse, this or the ice storms so many of you are having. But Boo, Possum, Rev, 80 sounds very good right now, Christmas or no Christmas.
I hope they can figure out what's wrong with Meredith N.N. We are keeping her and you in our prayers.
Same for you and your son Opiemom. Try not to fret.
Good to see you AFD. You need me to sing some Christmas songs to get you in the spirit? Last time I did that there were'nt a dry eye on the porch. I think I really got to them.

I hear you, Possum. It was in the 80's here yesterday (wish you were here, Asa Dear) and supposed to be until Friday. Yuck...however, I do enjoy my shorts and flip-flops in December (especially after freezing my gluteus off in New Mexico). Thanks for the Krispy Kremes, it's been ages since anyone brought any to the porch. Mavis used to bring them regular...where is she, by the way?
Prayers for your hubby's surgery Homemaker. May all go as expected and then some.
Me-They, I thought about you yesterday when I was getting Sean a haircut. There was a guy getting his hair cut in the chair next to Sean. He was about 45, not a bad looking guy at all but he was wearing these weird drawstring capri pants (with a drawstring below the knee) and he had on some OLD leather Birkenstocks and was carrying a man-purse...strange.
Better get Erin to school...be back later.

Good morning, all. Everyone seems so bright and chipper this morning. Weather ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime, and ours is about in the middle. After being in the 30s and 40s the past couple of days, we had a lot of fog last night, and now it's 65 degrees and wet. Not raining, just wet. Leaves plastered to the ground, couldn't blow them away if I tried. I wish they'd all go on and fall, I'm tired of paying my yard man to come and get them up, only to have them cover the ground again by the next day. Personally, I'd leave them until they're finished falling, but I have a couple of neighbors who just hate leaves, will walk outside to pick up one leaf from their lawn, and who cast the evil eye at me when they do. Grouches.
Tree is up. House is a mess. No other decorations out yet. Jury duty tomorrow, hope just for one day. Church "mystery lunch" trip all day Saturday. Work Sunday night, Tuesday night and Wednesday night. This doesn't give me a lot of time for shopping, and I'm less than a third finished with it. Oh well. I'll get it done, I always do.
Prayers for all needing them - porchsters, please keep us informed. I love you guys. --Romeena

Boo,
Here is the definition from Dictionary.com
–noun 1. a choral composition, either sacred and resembling a short oratorio or secular, as a lyric drama set to music but not to be acted.
2. a metrical narrative set to recitative or alternate recitative and air, usually for a single voice accompanied by one or more instruments.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Origin: 1715–25; < It, equiv. to cant(are) to sing (see cant1) + -ata -ate1]
THe churches I've been in (basically evangelical non-orthodox) have always called the production the choir does at Christmas "Christmas cantata" The music book calls them that also

I only made a small dent in my laundry today. My poor old dad needed some help and I ended up babysitting for my grandneice for awhile while her Daddy helped out my Dad. It sure was sweet. She was so sleepy and fell asleep while I held her. I think she slept there for a good hour. I loved every minute of it. I am so in love with that chubby little cherub, it's not even funny! Hey porch. Possum, I've got a whim to stop by your place for some meatloaf. And, no, I aint gonna put on clean underwear; it aint a whim if you put on clean underwear.
Well, here in Idaho, it's been about 24 the last couple days, warming up to 29 during the afternoon. (not as cold as Asa's porch) For the James Herriot fans, the real cold weather always reminds me of a part of one of his books, I think the first one, where Jim has to go help a farmer deliver a calf and the farmer hands him a bucket of water to wash his hands. It was so freezing cold, and Jim plunges his hands into the water to wash them. He furiously trys to lather the piece of soap, and discovers it is a piece of ice that he has been trying to lather up. Can you imagine how cold it would be to be a country vet and having to go to some of the coldest, remotest places to deliver an animal?
When is the Beverly Hills Marathon? I haven't seen the advertisement yet?

Hazel-When we still had our farm, during the winter of '93, we had 2 cows calve when the temp was about 20 below zero, not the wind chill but the real temp. Those vets sure do earn their money, I think. During both births we had to stay at the barn all night because it was so cold out. I can tell ya though cows give off an enormous amount of heat. All you have to do is just lean against one and you'll stay warm. That winter was a rough one, cold, cold cold. And, snow, wow, it was an adventure everyday. But, I loved it. We had hot coffee and a radio out there, it actually was "fun" when it happened and I still remember that winter fondly. Although, I can remember one morning by brother-in-law said, after a particularly heavy snow, "It's like the hand of God is reaching down and trying to crush us." That was so funny.

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree
have to do with Christmas? Today, I found out. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.
-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.
So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...so pass it on if you wish.
Merry (Twelve Days of) Christmas, my Porch Pals!

I love those stories and memories from childhood like that calving story! superneato! I told here a few years ago how Santa actually stopped by our house, we kids were so amazed that night.
Anyone here know how to look up stuff in the archives by subject or words??

Hey Y'all! MDC,I like your little version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" so much I think I'll award the bag of peat moss right back to you! Seriously, you did good! It's right cute.
Good to have Mrs.Wiley drop by and like Asa,I was enlightened by your post about the true meaning of "Twelve Days of Christmas." I will definitely listen with a different outlook the next time I hear that tune.
Congrats on the raise,Me-They!
Happy Nut,sorry to hear of your diagnosis. You just learn to take care of yourself and manage the diabetes, and do all you can and God will take care of the rest.
Glad things got better for you,Merri.Sometimes life can just overwhelm, can't it?
Y'all,Laci is having dental surgery tomorrow morning at MUSC. She has to have some baby teeth crowned, some pulled, and a cavity filled. She has those bad little preemie teeth( well, her bottom ones are in pretty good shape) and because she was a preemie, they are going to put her under by intubating her. She'll be under anesthesia for about 3 hours. Sure would appreciate some prayers going up for her.I'll give the Porch an update tomorrow afternoon as soon as I hear how things went.
Y'all have a good evening-love to all!

Prayers for Laci, Possum. By the way, that was funny about "Pete Moss". I know a guy named Harry Legg (no kidding).
Loved your Mayberry 12 days of Christmas...I may have to put my thinking cap on and come up with a song of my own...
Hard to believe there are people on this planet that have to live life without a Whataburger in it...You would like 'em MW. It is just a big, old-fashioned hamburger...kind of like the cadillac of fast-food burgers (you know, compared to McDonald's, which is like a used Pinto).
Wanted to tell you all about something really funny. I got a Christmas ecard from my sister today and it was the funniest thing I have ever seen. It was these dancing elves with my sister's and her husband's face on them! It was great! Ya'll might want to check out the website and consider putting your face on an elf. The site is wwwDOTelfyourselfDOTcom

...like a used Pinto! HA!! That's funny, BOO! Well, they sound delish. Wish I could have one. I've been craving protein/meat something fierce lately. Ugh. I have to watch that. We don't do it very often, but I do like a Fuddrucker's burger--they're pretty tasty and I always considered them the "higher-end" burger.
Well, I started on my Christmas cards tonight. I usually send around 50 each year but this year I'm cutting back a little. Just because I'm trying to watch our budget a little more and also not make the month of December a month of to-dos. I really want to savor and enjoy the moments.
I better hit the hay. We've had such gloomy weather for over a week now and I find myself wanting to curl up in the fetal position in a corner somewhere right in the middle of the day! Fighting fatigue is my Achilles heel. I don't even know if that made sense, so I best scoot on outta here. PEACE, love and joy to you all! MW

Good morning porchters. Hope you are all well.
Possum, prayers for our little Laci for sure, bless her heart. Let us know how she does. I know she'll be fine.
Sorry about the diabetes verdict Happynut. Take care of yourself and follow the doctors orders. I know a lot of folks with diabetes and the ones who do the best with it are the ones who manage it instead of the other way around.
No whataburgers around here. Thebest burger I've had at a fast food chain type deal was at In-n-Out. They are mostly in California, with a few I think in Arizona and one in Las Vegas. I heard they opened one down in St. George Utah but that's 300 miles south of me. To far to drive for a hamburger. They is good, but not that good.
Harry Legg? What were the parents thinking Boo? I knew of a family with the last name of Goff who named one of their boys Jack. I can't imagine what they were thinking of to do that. And if I were him, for sure I would have changed my first name as soon as I could. Crazy.
Hope all turned out well for you MW. I didn't see your prayer request till this morning but it sounds like all is well.
New Neighbor, any word on Meredith? Keep us informed.
We are a balmy 16 this morning. I wish Algore would come here and preach his global warming. I'm sure with his lips flapping he could raise the temp a few degrees all by his own self.

Thanks for the laugh, Asa....poor Jack! Does make you wonder how much thought some parents put into their children's names. Of course, when 'ol Jack was born, that slang term probably wasn't even heard of (maybe), but "Harry Legg"...surely someone thought of that!! Harry's daughter was a friend of mine and she said that once she went to return some videos for him and the clerk behind the desk asked her, "What's the name on the account?" and when she said, "Harry Legg", he said, "Ha ha, no really, what's the name on the account?" It took a few tries and some convincing to get him to believe her!
Well MW, Whataburgers are good, but not on the level of Fuddruckers (which you could call the Hummer Limosine of burgers, I guess...hehe). Hope you pep up and get some energy Chicky.
Better go pry Erin off the couch where she is wrapped up in a blanket. It is about 40 degree and windy out so I will have to force her out. These south texas kids don't like to get cold.

Asa, MW & Sterling- It looks like your weather finally made an appearence here this morning. Although, the temps are ok, holding steady in the mid 20's, the snow is falling, an inch or two and hour they're calling for.
Asa- At least we don't have those "Canyon winds" you mentioned. Those sound kinda bad, that kind of wind can make an inch of snow look like a bunch. Don't ya think you 30 inches of snow without wind is better than a couple of inches with it. Speaking of wind did ya see that Congress wants to talk with brother Sharpton? It's about time someone curbed that guy.
MDC-I didn't know that about "Rudolph," interesting. ...Rollo the red nose reindeer, doesn't seem to have the same ring. I remember your Christmas story. I don't know if I ever mentioned it but when our oldest girl was our only girl she was scared of Santa. She absolutely hated the idea that he would come into our house while we were sleeping. One time she said to me, "Why can't he just come by during the day when we're all awake."
The only fast-food joints within an hour's drive of my porch are McDonald's and BK. So, I got nothing to add.
Tom-You take care buddy! Hope that water resides for ya.

ASA or auh2o, whichever of you helped with the cow??
Anyway, do you know what it means in the song "Away in a Manger" in the second verse where it says "the cattle are lowing"?
I like trying to fiqure out those mistaken lyrics in songs. When i was a kid, I thought, not knowing what a "bobtail" was, those the Jingle Bell lyrics were "bells are 'bout to ring!" haha
In that non-Christmas song "Groovin' on a Sunday Afternoon" I always thought it ended, "You and me and Leslie." thinking that Leslie was maybe their child, until i found out that it is actually "you and me, ENDLESSLY." funny huh?
REV- any more concerts before Christmas? Thanks for spreading the Word the way you do.
This is the one time of year that we can walk into a store and here "Christ our Savior is born" coming over the speaker system! Praise God. Hopefully it is getting into peoples heads!

He is having such a tough time of it and told Sean today that if it wasn't for me, he would be dead. I am feeling really guilty because he seems to need me so much and he calls so much that I sometimes don't answer the phone because I am busy. I think he just needs to hear my voice. I am feeling the pressure right now. I love him very much and it's hurting to see him suffering. We are feeling Karen's absence so much right now. Thanks, friends.

Well,Laci made it thru surgery just fine! They pulled 4 teeth, and put crowns on some in the back. She had a fever going into surgery(she was fine yesterday & last night) and we were afraid it would get cancelled, but they think it's an ear infection. If she'd had chest congestion or something respiratory related, they wouldn't have been able to work on her.She is irritable and a little worse for wear, but should be heading home in a bit..We are so glad it's over! This has been planned since early fall, but she'd get sick with something and they'd have to cancel.Or something would come up on MUSC's end and they'd cancel. So,her toothies are all done and now we'll get her ear infection cleared up and she's all set for Christmas.Doesn't have her two front teeth, though!
Thank you all for the prayers.Such a blessing y'all are to me!

No, it wasn't anything you or anybody else here said. It actually was something I said.
POSSUM: Congrats on Laci's successful surgery. I hope that she gets those ears cleared up soon. Here's praying for a healthy Christmas for her and for all our porch families.
Nora is having front teeth issues, too. She has too many. Her permanents are half in and her baby teeth are hanging on for dear life. One finally fell out the other week. That last one just won't come out. It's almost sticking straight ahead. But she babies it and won't let me give it a good yank. The dentist gave her a reprieve until Christmas. Still, at this point she will probably need a retainer, at least. Our dentists has already clued us in that buying braces likely is in our future. Not as exciting as a new septic tank, but almost.
I had to go to court today for a traffic violation. I fully understand--if they give me five, I'll take ten, and if they give me ten, I'll take fifteen... Actually, I wasn't going that fast (but too fast). I plead guilty and got probabtion before judgment because I have a clean driving record. So, I had to pay $90 but at least didn't get any points. The points would have caused an ins*rance bump that makes that $90 look good.
MAUDE: That supper'll lay on yer chest!
Well, until later...

Hello Porchsters! Tom sent me an email nudging me back here to the porch & I must say "Thank you" to him & "I'm Sorry" to everyone else for being gone so long. Things are always crazy around the holidays (Thanksgiving through Christmas) for me with everyone wanting their puppies to look their best for company. Wears me out by the time Christmas gets here. Between that & the things going on mentally with me seems I have less & less time to do things lately.
I am really missing my dear Mother right now, this is the 4th Christmas without her & I swear, it doesn't feel like it's getting any easier to celebrate the season without her.
I have so much to be thankful for, I really do, but the holidays are bittersweet for me.
I have a new husband to celebrate Christmas with & he has been just awesome & so understanding. It's the first time I have put up a tree since Mom passed away & he has been wonderful helping me to get it just the way I want it.
I have a brother to spend Christmas with, something we haven't done since I was pregnant with Jacob (19 years ago!), a sister-in-law, 2 neices & a nephew as well.
My son will be here with me for a week (& boy is he gonna get a BIG Christmas surprise!) & still, I have feelings of depression creeping in.
I would appreciate it if you all would keep me in your prayers, I need all the help I can get.
Best get off here, got a customer due any minute to pick up her furkid.
