Yes, Boo, I think he must be telling me something. He's also been spending a little more quality time with the girls as well. I think part of it is that he is working with a man who is just starting to go through a divorce and he sees what the effects are close up, especially since there are children involved. My hubby has been divorced once before, but did not have children at the time. Being at the women's conference over the weekend helped me as well, as one of the speakers spoke on "What are you focusing on?", and I know my focus has been more on the negative than the positive in recent months. Sounds like the Lord is speaking to each of us, but in totally different ways - and we definitely needed it.

Well, enough of the "Chatty Cathy" impersonation - I think I'll get lunch. How's about Italian Wedding soup, salad, french bread, with some angel food cake for dessert. Yum!

Dr.P - I am looking to live within 20-30 min of IC and I need a place to rent. Any ideas?? I looked in North Liberty, but because I have been unemployed for four months (graduated from law school in May, took the bar exam in July and had to wait for the results to come out last week), no one will rent to me. It was embarrassing and I am not eager to repeat the experience. At this point I'll live anywhere I can get a rental.

Merri Weather - I love that your two year old had the mop! I cleaned out my son's room Monday and found under the bed one of my missing tupperware containers, a petrified pop tart and a few random potato chips. But cionsidering he's 18 it could have been much worse....

Opiemom - I found some camp stew recipes that look close to what I remember visiting the website you suggested. Now I really have a cravin' for some.

I'm pleased to meet all of the newcomers. I'm from Idaho. (I whispered) Don't want anyone to think I tap my foot in restrooms or anything... Although once a quarter fell out of my pants pocket and I tried to put my foot on it as it rolled into the next stall. But, honestly, that meant nothing.
One "how come" I've always wondered about was in the pickle story. Now I'm not a canner (I'd be afraid I'd give my family botchilsm, or however you spell it); but I've always thought it odd when the boys break the seal on all the home-made pickles, and put them into the good 'ol store-bought pickle jars. Once they're opened, shouldn't they be kept refridgerated, or they'll spoil? Instead, Barney passed them out. Now they're anywhere from Oregon to Nova Scotia.
Im home this week, recovering from a little surgery. So if I seem a little more "out there" than usual, not to worry... it's just drugs.

By the way, I admit I'm not up-to-date on my public restroom secret signals etiquette, but reaching under one stall into another that's occupied isn't exactly a subtle no-no. But that's just me.

September 26, 2007 - Msg 56339: Howdy, all. I just got back in the house, have been outdoors with my landscaper friend and his crew all day. We got a lot done. We did some weeding and pruning, and put rye grass seed on the lawn, corn gluten meal in the flowerbeds, and dry molasses on everything! There's still more to do, but we decided to leave it until mid-November. There are some rose bushes to move to another location and they'll do better if we wait until then, and all my other roses will need pruning way down by then. Anyway, I'm filthy, and anxious for a shower, but decided to wait until I quit sweating.

When my youngest son was about 18, I found several decomposing banana peels under his bed. When confronted, he said he had heard that they would repel fleas. I informed him that there were no fleas in the house, and he said, "Well, see there, it works!" Being a fast healer, he was as good as new in about a week.

Well, the shower calls. Sweat was literally dripping off my hair earlier, so I'm really anxious to get cleaned up. Have a great evening, everyone. --Romeena

CAROLINE BOWE'S PEANUT BUTTER PIE

1 chocolate graham cracker crust shell

filling:
1 package cream cheese-softened
1 cup creamy peanut butter
3/4 cup sugar (can adjust if it's too sweet)
1 tub cool whip (use enough to get the filling good and creamy)
1 tbs vanilla (optional)

combine filling ingredients well until completely smooth and pour into shell. can freeze to set faster. garnish with shaved chocolate or chocolate syrup-or both!

September 26, 2007 - Msg 56345: Hey, all, I'm back. Considerably cleaner, and no longer smelling like a goat. There's just no feeling like being scrubbed clean, hair still wet, wearing a soft old favorite nightshirt, and nothing to do for the rest of the evening but rest my weary bones. So glad I don't have that 17-lb baby to take care of! Can you imagine the lung power in a newborn of that size?

I just touched base with the florist, everything is all set. The flowers will be delivered to Bogart's Friday afternoon, and they know it is to be pretty, cheerful and bright, nothing funeral-y. This florist is great to work with. Of course, someone in Richmond will actually make the delivery, but I trust my florist. I've dealt with them for many years, and have a house account with them. A little more money came in today, we have more than enough for the flowers, and a very respectable amount to send to the church. Anyone else who wishes to honor Millie in this way - just send it on. I won't send the money to the church until the end of next week, to give everyone time to respond.

Vickie, so nice of you to visit us, and share that recipe. I loved Millie's peanut butter pie, and now I can make some myself. Thanks! We hope you'll become a regular porchster, now that you've found us. We're a little scruffy at times, but we clean up pretty well. --Romeena

I have read the on-line comments that people have posted for Millie at her obituary site. It makes me so emotional to read them, but I plan on posting a message myself as soon as I'm up to it. I must say, I nearly crawled out of my skin at the thought of a 17 lb. baby, especially for a gal that the epidural doesn't work for. OUCH! Each has a different personality and you get to know them. It is now up to one 50 lb. sack of corn a day. Yep, every saturday get seven bags of corn and unload the 350 lbs myself. Keeps my 70 year old back working.

Romeena, the dried molasses will take care of the nutsedge in your lawn. It takes some time to work. It may just be that your lawn grass benefits and starves it out. I believe your dirtdoctor.com in Dallas has something on this.

I've been working... hard all day, with the thought that tonight I can come home, get a hot shower, turn on the tv and watch a 4 hour commercial marathon... uninterrupted. And what do they do? They keep showing a few seconds of Andy Griffith in on them and ruining the blamed commercials. And if that ain't bad enough, I'm pretty sure some of these commercials have been edited. I remember seeing some of these a while back and I'm pretty sure some parts have been cut out. Well I don't know about you but I'm amd as he*# and I ain't taking it no more. I pay good money for my Dish network and I think I should be able to watch commercials all day every day without being bombarded with sensless shows.

I did notice in one scene in Andy's living room, that Jim's guitar actually was electric, with wires and all, he wasn't playing the acoustic one.

I know that Jack Prince never recorded anything, I think we established that some time ago. Now I have another question. Are we absolutely sure that he really was doing the singing himself? A few times, the sound didn't seem to be in very good sync with his mouth. Anybody know? PH?

September 26, 2007 - Msg 56367: Oh, by the way. For all you aspartame fans out there - here's something interesting. As mentioned before, I have long had a problem with those miserable little tiny honey-colored ants. Couldn't sit anything down on a kitchen counter, it would be attacked in seconds, and naturally nothing was safe in a cabinet. They were in my microwave! They were in the bathroom too - anywhere there's food or water. They would even get in the little boxes that my daily medications are in. They ate a hole in the end of a CoQ10 capsule and the liquid inside was oozing out. Well, based on something I heard, I sprinkled Equal on the lowest shelf in my bathroom cabinet. I sprinkled it along the top of the backsplash on the kitchen counters, on the bottom shelf of the pantry, and on the floor of the cabinet that houses my microwave. That was two days ago. No ants, except a few dead ones. Hmmm. Interesting. --Romeena

Granted, ants are tiny and we are big, and presumably could withstand a great deal more of aspartame or any other substance than a tiny ant could. There is a convincing report on a study done in England, called to my attention by Poor Horatio, and it certainly sounds authoritative, which insists that there is no danger in aspartame consumed in normal amounts, or even in relatively abnormal amounts. This is probably quite true. However, the fact remains, I don't have ants in my kitchen tonight. Make of that whatever you wish. I have no need to convince myself of the safety of the substance, because I absolutely cannot stand the taste. When I tried to get accustomed to it (unsuccessfully) it gave me migraine headaches, so I just quit torturing my taste buds with it, and drink plain tea, or (rarely) a regular soda. So, draw your own conclusions, folks. Better yet, run an "ant test" yourself. Your results may be different from mine. --Romeena

September 27, 2007 - Msg 56371: Sounds like they don't like molasses, but the Equal actually killed them. There is a difference, right? I have read lots of report pro and con about equal but there is a nutritionist/author who I read and I think he is really bright. He says equal should be avoided by all and I have always agreed with him on things. I have a family member who used to work for a plant that produced Nutrasweet and he never touches the stuff. He said the way it's composed, chemically, makes it impossible for the body to break down and that's not healthy.

Natural is best, when possible. Artificial sweetners give me terrible headaches, anyway. I am trying to get used to the Stevia. I can drink it in tea and it doesn't bother me because I only need a little (only like my tea a little sweet).

Since we moved into this apartment, I have been seeing these little roaches so I put out some of those combat discs. Those things really work!...that's a commercial thrown in for you, Asa 'Ol Buddy.

Boy, it was so hot here yesterday. In the 90's with high humidity so it felt like 100. Supposed to be more of the same today and all weekend, ugh! I'm ready for fall. I am planning an old-fashioned Barn Raising sometime this fall when we put up our "barn"....red metal instead of wood, but we can pretend. Bruce is planning on gathering up some friends and family and I thought we could make it an event and bar-b-que, etc. Unfortuntely, none of us can dance like they did in "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers". Hopefully the weather will be cooler by then.

I have been a Christian since age 16, but I never really understood God's grace until about 4 years ago. It sure makes a difference! I'm trying to study Ephesians right now. I'm trying to sharpen-up my daily walk...very practical teaching in there about living a holy life.

September 27, 2007 - Msg 56378: Good morning, everyone. "Gherkin #2", Merri W? Is your child portraying a small pickle at school today? Reminds me of one of my favorite little cartoons, years ago. I believe it was "The Family Circus", though it could have been any family-type cartoon. Parents are in bed, clock on the nightstand says 5 a.m. Father looks groggy, Mother's eyes are wide and shocked. Small, earnest-looking child is standing at the bedside saying, "Mommy, I forgot to tell you. I need an asparagus suit for our play this morning." That one just cracked me up. An "asparagus suit"?? Don't you just love it? Not a bunny suit, or a pirate suit or some such - but an asparagus suit. For this morning. Precious!

What are some of the more unusual costumes you've made for your kids, all you moms? I guess my most unusual one was a little porcupine suit I made for a grandchild. It was pretty cute if I do say so myself. Also, I crocheted a pumpkin suit, complete with a little flat orange hat with a green stem, for an infant grandson. Halloween fell on a Sunday that year, and his mother dressed him in it for Sunday School and church that morning. Everyone got such a laugh, somebody told a reporter friend, and next thing we knew, the local paper ran his picture and a short blurb about it. I still have that clipping. He looked so cute in that little suit. We kept it and his sister wore it two years later.

Well, I'd better get busy. Gotta do something about this office. My bedroom looks great, but all I did was shift the junk out into this room, so now it looks like a closet exploded. I hate this. I'm down to the nitty-gritty, all this stuff I don't need, don't want, and don't have a place to store, but don't dare throw away some of it, and can't make myself throw away the rest. Argh.

September 27, 2007 - Msg 56379: Oh, my. Me-They, you crack me up. You and your feet phobia. I walk around in my kitchen barefoot all the time. My feet are clean. I shower daily. I have old shoes that I wear when gardening, which are removed at the door, or if I do go out barefoot, I squirt them off with the garden hose before coming back inside. However, I DO NOT want roaches walking around in my kitchen, or anywhere else for that matter. Now THOSE are some disgusting feet! I do believe I'd use that napalm, if that was the only way. Fortunately, I've found that boric-acid based powder sprinkled in strategic places works very well.

On the subject of Grumpy Andy, may I remind you that during those years he was raising a young teenager? Case closed! --Romeena

September 27, 2007 - Msg 56384: I always wondered why a lot of the times the people in Mayberry would get into their cars on the passenger side, and then slide over to the drivers side. How come?
I mean, I realize that back then they had bench seats in cars and they could do that, but it is not that much of a jaunt to walk around to the drivers side is it? Or are they just trying to rub our noses in the fact that most cars nowadays have bucket seats?! ;)

I am reminded of that curious little trait because my drivers side door won't open from the outside, so I have to go in through the passenger side and "slide" across, which is kind of difficult because they are bucket seats. But every time I do it it reminds me of TAGS.

Well, we are finally having Kai's birthday party this Sunday at the roller rink. We are kind of late due to the Vegas trip and everything, and we just didn't plan anything then or get the invitations out in time for anything sooner. And wouldn't you know it, I have to work that day. I asked to get out a couple hours early so I could help set up but my boss only gave me an hour, so I will be a little late as I will have to scrub off the layer of grease that accumulates on me throughout the day and then get out to the rink(in another town) all in a half hour before the party starts at 1:30.

You know, talking about this Adimajab thing; I heard alot from people from Columbia University saying they thought it was important that they allow him to speak and hear what he has to say. Well, what did they think he would say? Did they really think he would state anything that wasn't propaganda? I mean, the way they were talking about it before-hand, you would have thought Jesus himself was coming to speak.
...Oh wait, they wouldn't have allowed HIM to speak.

Rasberry syrup
4 cups raspberries, washed, picked
3 cups sugar
2 cups water

Boil all ingredients together for 10 minutes. Filter through a flannel bag and let it cool off. I use it on ice cream and in iced tea.

How come in the TAGS episode about the Carters and Wakefield feud there were ducks walking around the hen house and barn yard and not chikens? I've never known a farmer who had ducks instead of chickens!

Romeena, I made my boy a Tigger costume for his third Halloween and when he got it one, he leaned back and -smack- sat down hard on the ground. He did this four times and then started to cry, er, wail. Totally alarmed I picked him up, rocked him and asked him what was wrong. He told me his tail didn't work! If you remember, Tigger could spring around on his tail!! It was his first lesson in the difference between make-believe and reality. Wish I could have made him a spring-loaded tail.

Folks on this porch are the handiest people - using aspartame to keep away the crawling critters - what a GREAT idea.

I can open it from the outside, but not the inside. Before I can turn the car off, I have roll the window down, reach out and open the door using the outside handle, then roll the window back up. Pain in the neck! I need to put it in the shop but it's so hard to be without a car.
