September 09, 2007 - Msg 55605: My goodness! It's pouring rain here! I'm really glad to see it, we can use it, but I had planned to do a little planting today. Guess I'll forget that.

A rainstorm makes me sad these days. The Plum hated storms, and would get as close to me as she could and would get a little upset if I moved around too much. She wanted me in my chair in the den, which is in the center of the house, away from windows, and she wanted either in my lap or on the ottoman by my feet. Now she's outside in the rain, and it breaks my heart. She's as close to the house as I could get her, under the eaves and just below my window, but still it hurts. New Neighbor, thanks for the kind words, and for remembering her little mascot days. Wasn't she cute?

Boo, I agree with homemaker completely. Send Bruce, and try to disengage if you can. Pray about it, lighten up a bit and try to minimize it for Sean's sake. He'll take his cues from you to some extent, and if you're upset, he will be too.

I declare, why are there always rotten kids like that boy in schools, to make life miserable for good kids like Sean? Sometimes the kid isn't all that bad, just being a little jerk, but since the school seems to have a file on this one, I guess that's not the case here. I remember when my David was in elementary school, there was a big old kid who just messed with him all the time. David was tall and big for his age, but this kid was a monster, physically. He had David beat by about six inches and at least fifty pounds. He would pick on Dave until Dave would finally wade in and hit him back, then the big kid would cry to the teacher that David had "jumped on" him. The teachers seemed to have trouble sorting it out, until one day when the kid said that and when the teacher asked David if it was true, he asked, "Do you think I'm crazy? Why would I jump on a big ox like that? I would never hit him first, but I'm not going to stand there and get beat up, either." Well, that seemed to make sense to the teachers, so they took control, and long story short, by the time the kids were in 8th grade, they were very good friends. Kids - go figure.

The rain has stopped, and everything looks very fresh and new right now. No butterflies to be seen anywhere, they've taken shelter, I guess, but the birds are slowly coming back out, and a hummer is drinking his fill at the feeder outside my window. There's a big old wasp that comes and chases him away (where's my swatter?) but the rain seems to have chased him away, so the hummer is taking advantage of it. Really, I do need to nail that wasp, the pesky thing.

I'm giving my bedroom a thorough cleaning, and finally finishing up a window treatment that I had just rigged up temporarily. Looked okay, but I knew it was just pinned together, so now I'm getting it done right. Looks pretty good!

September 09, 2007 - Msg 55608: Yep, she was a sight, alright. If memory serves, didn't you make her costume? She pulled that little wagon around and saw to it that everyone got a picker-upper. My granddaughter is disappointed, because she was thinking of having her pull a little cart (for real), or wear tiny ruffly saddlebags with flower petals in them, when she gets married in my yard next spring. I'm not sure how that would have worked out, but it might have been fine. Sure would have been cute.

I'm quite sure it won't work with the new puppy - she'll still be too young and rowdy in the spring. The flower petals would go flying, I'm sure, and she would be into everything. The Plum was old enough to be a bit more sedate and exhibit good manners, but a puppy? I think not.

Well, back to cleaning that miserable bedroom. I have let things go to ruin around here these last couple of months, with the Plum sick and all. This house is a mess, and I've got to get it under control. See you later, all. --Romeena

Just got back from pizza and bowling with the church youth group. I am on the youth committee and find myself driving alot of kids around these days. We are planning a fund-raiser for November...kind of a dinner-theater thing. The food will be catered by a very good cook and I am in charge of lining up the talent, skits, etc...whoa! Wish me luck with that. Any ideas would be gratefully considered!

Think I'll go take a little rest. I wish I could take the day off tomorrow but have a dr's appointment that I can't miss and laundry to do (of course). Wish I could just go to a band concert in the park and sip Mint Julips....what's my hurry?

I have been up since 3am and have to get up in a couple hours to leave, which it looks like I will be doing. Still unsure about it, but circumstances were leaning in the "go" direction; wife bought me alot of little travel things today, which I took as that she did want me to go with her, even after what she said last night. Can't say I am 100% fine with it, but after all, Kai was pretty excited about spending some nights at her grandma's also.
I just hope and pray that things work out. I think this is probably going to be my last plane ride though, and I will be opting for the rail next time, at least when traveling over land(I realize it is pretty hard for a train to go across the ocean). I have researched it, and it is much cheaper besides; way cheaper.
Thank you for your prayers and advice. If you could, please pray for the plane ride(s)(four in all, there and back - connecting flights). I am still hesitant about it, and hopefully I won't change my mind at the last minute. But as tired as I am, and how not-thrilled I am with this trip in the first place, it could happen, who knows.
Well, you will know if I actually went through with it if I don't talk to you for a few days; unless they have computers with internet in the rooms we're staying in - supposed to be a snazzy place so you never can tell; or if I don't go, then I will talk to you all tomorrow.

The offending child was reported to the police and suspended. The girl was just mad and said a couple things in haste that she shouldn't have. Nothing came from the threat thank God, and now they're friends again. I pray the parents of the boy who confronted Sean will find a way to rein him in and get him the help he needs.

As I mentioned, he lives with his elderly grandmother who is trying to raise several other grandkids, too, and it's been obvious that she has no control over the boy. I don't see a good future ahead for him unless he changes. I have prayed for him, though.

September 10, 2007 - Msg 55632: REV, I talked to some wholesale truck farmers at the Farmers Market and they said the apple crop was going to be skimpy ( NOT SKIPPY )this year , due to the drought. I don't know if this included the area of Hendersonville.
Maybe someone from that area might know more, if they would let me know. Also, does anyone know about how the drought might affect the leaf changing season in NC. It usually occurs the middle of OCT.

September 10, 2007 - Msg 55633: Good Monday morning porch. thought I would check in today. Back at work today and getting things geared up for a busy week. Thanks for breakfast SPOT. Had a busy week end and spent yesterday after church doing laundy and cleaning. We visited my husbands brothers in Knoxville on Saturday so that pretty much shot the entire day. I generally do chores and grocery shopping on Saturday so I had to try and do part of that after church.School and football is keeping us busy on my end of the porch. We are working on getting my son a vehicle. My husbands brother is fixing up my husbands "OLD" 1984 Jeep cherokee for him. He is almost finished, just a few things left to do and it will be finished. Patrick is pretty excited about it. Should be a good car for him. Prayers for Millie and family today. Lets do a special lunch today for Millie:

September 10, 2007 - Msg 55635: Good morning, all. We've had more rain during the night, apparently, and it's pouring right now. The water is high in my little pond, almost up to the bottom of the stone slab that forms the bridge. There's usually four or five inches of clearance there. The rainclouds are so low and heavy that I have no TV reception - the satellites are blocked out. This would be a good day to clear off my desk - maybe I'll get it done.

De§, obviously you do understand, and I'm sorry about your kitty. I know my Plum isn't really out there, but our minds grasp the temporal much better than the spiritual, and I just can't help it. I'll be glad when this emotional ride settles down a bit.

Well, I wonder if Sterling actually left? I hope so, because from what he's been saying, I think a refusal at this point might have disastrous results. If it was all about a fear of flying, that would be different. His wife would probably understand and accept that, but that wasn't all of it. There were other factors, and for those reasons, I hope he went.

I know some people really do fear flying. I have a doctor friend who has been on several of the Mongolia missions. His wife is a nurse, and would be a great asset to the team, but refuses to go. She is terrified of flying, and that's that. She's a lovely person, a dedicated Christian, very mission-minded, but she will not fly. Period.

I don't understand that fear, but I accept that some people have it, and I respect it. My first time to fly was when I was 14, and I've flown ever since. My oldest son is a private pilot, and I've flown with him in all sorts of light planes. There's one, called the Katana (I think) that's like a skinny flying banana, or a big flying kayak. Long, slender, tapered body and extra-long skinny wings. Very maneuverable, and lots of fun to fly in it. I've been up in a glider, where the tow plane cuts you loose and you just ride thermals until you're ready to come down. Now, THAT is a thrill! I've never been up in a hot air balloon, and that one ain't gonna happen. I feel about that the same way Sterling feels about airplanes. No, thank you. It would be a thrill, I'm sure, but I would be terrified. So I do know how he feels, I just don't understand why he feels that way about planes.

STERLING: Having been through the flight thing recently, I know how you feel. But it will be fine. Do as ROMEENA suggests and try and have a great time while you are there. Also, I agree with BOO’s advice. The only thing I would add is that, as hard as it may be for you to see, the most important relationship you have beside that with God is the one you have with your wife. You cannot preserve a relationship with a child by harming one with a spouse. It doesn’t work that way. Of course we need to protect our children from what we feel can harm them, but the child who feels the most security is one who feels the love between his or her parents.

BOO: Sorry to hear about Sean having such a tough time at school. Bruce will handle the situation, I’m sure. I hope Sean is okay. How’s he doing with the episode?

September 10, 2007 - Msg 55641: Me-They, if something comes into my regular email inbox, and gets deleted, it does go into "trash" where I can retrieve it. Unfortunately, if it gets caught in the spam filter, when I go into that thing to empty it, anything I send to "trash" there is automatically deleted when I log off. It's a complicated, unwieldy system and it doesn't work very reliably, but if I go to something else, I would lose my email address, and I've had it for many years and am not willing to change it. In fact, I pay 5.95 a month to keep it. It's through Internet America, and it just gets passed along through my ISP, which is Time-Warner cable DSL. So, I put up with Internet America's clumsy, ineffective spam catcher. Maybe some day they'll improve it and catch up with the big boys. --Romeena

That reminds me of the philosophy a friend from my youth had. He was a good looking enough guy, but dated just scads of girls. Once, someone asked him how it was he got so many different girls. His words were a testament to perserverence: "If you ask 100 women out, one is bound to say yes." He finally settled down about 10 years ago, got married, had a daughter, and runs his own successful electrical contracting business.

Oh, I've been reading a great book called "The Worst Hard Time." It's about the Dust Bowl and the people who stayed put and rode it out. MOst of what I've heard is about those who left (a la "Grapes of Wrath") so this was very interesting. It tells personal stories and centers around the town of Dalhart. You Texans may find it interesting.

I used to be a-scared of flying myownself. When I was a senior in high school I passed up an opportunity to spend a month in the Orient with my dad and stepmom. I still kick myself over that one, especially since I later got over my fear of flying and for the past 20-25 years I've been hopping on planes without much of a care. I don't know if statistics will help, but supposedly there are upwards of 90,000 flights on any given day in the U.S. alone, 30,000 of which are commercial jet liners. Multiply that by 365 days per year, then compare the number of flights to how many crashes you hear about. Very, very rare. Of course, when one is a-scared, all the stats in the world don't help. Believe me, I know!

I missed the Britney Spears video, fortunately. What a silly, silly girl. When my kids see her they just shake their heads and change the channel. Makes me right proud.

Homemaker, when I read your post I read it as "forty seven" loads of laundry! LOL I was thinking, "Wow, she must have a dozen washers and dryers!" It wasn't until Boo's post that I noticed it was "forty eleven." Now that's funny!

September 10, 2007 - Msg 55647: Speaking of good books - here's a suggestion, especially for you ladies. "Hadassah - One Night with the King". It's fiction, of course, but it's based on the story of Queen Esther, and stays true to the Biblical account, with fictional details added to make it a full novel. The facts as given in the Bible are there. It's really quite good.

My next reading project is "The Kite Runner". I probably shouldn't read it, because it's only going to fan the flames of my negative feelings about Islam, but on the other hand, I think we all need to raise our level of awareness. The threat is not going to go away, and our very way of life, including the freedom to practice Christianity, is at stake. It's amazing to me, how many people don't realize that. It occurs to me that perhaps we're overlooking an ally here. There are those in this country who are insisting on freedom FROM religion, as compared to freedom OF religion - those who want "Under God" removed from the pledge, all of that. I wonder if those folks realize that Islam will force them into a religion, like it or not? If we don't stop Islam now, we will find ourselves with two choices. Convert or die. Personally, I'll die, and I suspect we all would, but that will be our choice someday if we don't stop them.

September 10, 2007 - Msg 55649: Well, if we're discussing what books we're reading at the moment, I'm reading a "Merlin Trilogy" by Mary Stewart. It's 3 separate books, and I'm on the third one. I don't usually care much for fantasy type books, but this one is pretty well grounded in history, and the story of King Authur is really interesting.

I watched a 9-11 memorial last night on TBN. It first showed last year. Very moving, we must all be remineded of the attack, for reasons Romeena mentioned and to remember the heroes of that day.
BOO- dr Kennedy was actually 74! He had a heart attack a few months back and never really recovered from it. May he rest in peace, but may his ministries go on!
On a lighter note, all this recent air talk reminded me of an ep of the old Bob Newhart show, in our pre-terrorism days, other than an occasional flight going to cuba. Emily, who was afraid of flying, went with Bob and his group on a flight.
Then, as they take off and as the stewardess (a pre-PC word)came by for drink orders, Emmily said, "Yes, I'll have coffee and please turn this plane around." (: If memory serves me right, the next scene is back at the terminal and Bob is trying to calm down his group.

September 10, 2007 - Msg 55652: Wow! I just got back from a trip to the bank, and I'd say we have had some rain! I drove by the duck ponds (really) on the way, and couldn't believe what they look like. The water is usually pretty clear, just looks like normal lake water. Today it's light tan, the color of clay. The rock retaining walls are nowhere to be seen, with the water just lapping at the grass all around the edges. It's pouring in a torrent through the spillway, presumably into the sewer. Any hapless duck that gets too close to that will be swept away. I wouldn't recommend that Barney and Thelma Lou take a drive down there this evening. --Romeena

Me-They, you really got my attention when you mentioned Dalhart. It is kind of a "pet" town of mine. We pass through Dalhart in December on our way to Colorado. I have been there several times and only once when it wasn't really cold. It really is out in the middle of nothing and nowhere. Nothing to block the winter winds and it snows there, too. There is a saying that there is "nothing between Dalhart and the North Pole" and it feels like it, too. The place always smells like a stockyard and most folks live below the poverty level, it looks like. They do have a couple of small motels, a convenience store and a McDonalds, though. I am going to have to look for that book. I haven't had time for much reading lately but that sounds like a good one.

homemaker, I wish I could learn to like the contents of those pink packets, but the stuff just sets my teeth on edge, and leaves a horrible metallic aftertaste. Also, I can't forget that most obstetricians advise pregnant women not to use it. Why, I have to wonder? What is it that they're afraid of? Also, my endocrinologist said he was happy I didn't like the fakes, because he doesn't trust them either. So, I learned to drink my tea straight, and I skip the sodas. Once in a while, like about once a month, I'll drink a regular soda and just take a tad more insulin, and it doesn't bother me. Actually, good fresh tea over a lot of ice is delicious and very refreshing. I drink some of the specialty teas, and really like them better as is - I don't miss the sugar at all.

Well, now that I've cheered up all the diet soda and fake sugar users, I'll go my merry way. (heehee) --Romeena
September 10, 2007 - Msg 55661: I know Romeena and when I was pregnant, I didn't go near any diet stuff. I didn't mind poisoning myself but I wasn't doing it to the baby. The first one had enough troubles of his own without me doing the diet stuff.

We had lamb burgers tonite on the grill. We have a few hair sheep (sheep that shed naturally and are more for meat than for wool). My husband thought they were rather tasty.

Ro, I am surprised your endocrine doc confessed to that. Most doctors won't. They think everyone who questions the use of artificial sweetners is a "nuts and berries" freak. I don't touch the stuff, personally....of course I do weigh over 200 lbs. haha! Guess I should lay off the carbs, especially in the form of sugar. I do like unsweet tea. Pretty good stuff.

September 10, 2007 - Msg 55666: Boo, my endocrinologist is pretty neat. He takes a realistic approach to things. For example, he agrees that instead of trying to keep me on a diet of lettuce and broiled fish, it's better to let me eat a normal diet, avoid excess carbs, and take insulin. If my thyroid quit working, I'd be given a thyroid supplement. Why is it any different with the pancreas? Now that's not a license to eat huge bowls of ice cream, or pig out on high carb food, and he would like for me to lose some weight, but as I said, he takes a realistic approach. I'm guessing he gets a greater degree of compliance from his patients that way. Cut me some slack, and I'll cooperate - kind of that idea. He doesn't ask his patients not to use the fakes, but he's relieved when they don't want to, so long as they don't use a lot of real sugar. As I said, he's okay. He has given me a lot of room, I test often, take my insulin, and my blood sugars stay in a very acceptable range. Can't argue with success, I guess.

Ro, sounds like you have a wise Dr. there. When it comes to sugar or salt, I've found the less I use, the less I want. But give me one slice of pie and it's off-to-the-races. Boo, sorry Erin has the cough, hope it's something she can fight off without too much medicine. I always hated giving my kids Triaminic as often as I did. At 16 and 18 they STILL get sinus crud too often for my comfort.

The rain is a blessing to us because we have been so dry and hot for much of the summer. Speaking of VICKS, my friend who is a hairdresser said VICKS is good for burns..
she said when you burn yourself to put Vicks on the burn and it immediately takes the pain away.

Big Maude, I don't think I would be putting VICKS on a burn. It's not a good idea to treat burns like that. The best thing is to flush the area with tepid water for several minutes to cool the burn and prevent further damage. Something like Vicks could make the burn worse.

September 11, 2007 - Msg 55687: Good afternoon, all. Boo, I hope the Vicks helped Erin's cough. I wish I knew how it works, but I guess it's enough to know that it does.

This is a very solemn day, and I hope we never forget the events of that horrible morning, when the "peaceful Muslims" so brutally attacked and killed 3,000 people who never meant them any harm. Those people had done nothing except to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was not an act of war, it was murder, and those who planned and carried it out are murderers, no excuse.

I only wish I could have had a window into heaven at that moment. I'd like to have seen the expressions on the faces of Mohammed Atta and the rest of the murderers in the split second after the planes slammed into their targets. Can you imagine their shock, when they opened their eyes, expecting to see 72 smiling virgins welcoming them, and instead found themselves looking into the face of Jehovah God? In that instant, full knowledge would have been theirs, they would have known the error of what they had chosen to believe, and the full impact of what they had done and the consequences would have hit them. The inferno that engulfed those buildings would have been nothing compared to where they are now. How horrible!

I'm no theologian, but I have a theory. I believe there is a God-shaped void in the heart of every human. The need for communion with a creator, a deity, surfaces in just about every civilization, no matter how primitive. When not told and taught about God, they search their souls and minds, and often manage to come close to the truth. How God deals with them, I don't know, and don't have to know, it's His business. I think, though, that there will be some judgment based upon the intent for good or for evil.

In the case of Islam, they came out of the original Abrahamic line, and therefore had knowledge of Jehovah God. Eventually, through the self-serving teachings of Mohammed, the pedophile prophet, Islam arose and evolved. Many of those born into Islam still possess the longing for a good and loving God, and they are what we see as the "peaceful Muslims". However, Mohammed's teachings appeal to a great many men who are attracted to the notion having absolute power over women. These men are bullies by nature, and are therefore also intrigued by the command to "convert by the sword if necessary". That's what is at the heart of the terrorist attacks. Combine the nature of a bully with the promise of a s#x-filled eternity, and they're on the band wagon!

We hear a lot of rhetoric about it being about oil and the like, but I don't believe that's so. If you doubt it, take another look at old Bin Laden's rant the other night. He "invited" all of us to convert to Islam. The implication was that the terrorist acts will continue until we do.

That's a bit like a young man who seeks out the lady of his choice, and tells her "Fall in love with me or I'll kill you." Hmmm. Seems to me that's the reason God provided a way for us to reach Him, through Jesus' sacrifice. He wants us to love Him because we want to. He could have created us as a bunch of robots, parroting words of praise, but He wanted it to be of our free will. Anything less is worthless. I guess Islam just can't quite see that, but old Mr. Atta understands it now. Poor thing.
