Hey Me-They, nice to see a good, long post from you. Maybe things are slowing down a bit on the job? I wish I could participate in the political conversation but I am terribly ignorant about most politics (I shouldn't be, I know). I would love see another good moulage about something.....could you comply, possibly? heehee

Just finished having lunch with Karen's ex-husband. He is doing a pretty good job with the kids and it's a struggle since he seperated from his current wife. We all had a good time and some good laughs over lunch (which I needed). Seems strange that I am spending time with my best friend's ex, though. I know I need to do that, though, for the sake of Karen's kids. I am trying to stay on friendly terms and forget the things of the past that made me want to beat him to a pulp! haha

Well, I feel like sitting and listening to the rain for a bit. I am trying not to be so driven by the work that is always waiting to be done around here. Since I turned off the TV (!), I am discovering the healing power of those few quiet moments I can spend just thinking or praying. I have also taken up crocheting (believe me, this is a stretch for me because I am not the type to crochet), but I find that it relaxes me. I just finished a cute scarf for Erin and am working on a baby blanket and an afghan for the couch. Hope I finish them. I need some intruction on how to learn some new stiches from someone. I bought a book and looked it up on the internet but I can't get the hang of it by looking at a picture, I have to have someone teach me in person. OK, have I bored you all to death yet? Is anyone left alive on the porch after this post?

Asa-I don't recall you mentioning the news of the newest addition, congratulation! Still praying for ya buddy. I know it's the most powerful thing I can do but I wish I could do more, thinking of you.

M-T I have to agree with ya, Hillary's delivery is similar to Nixon's. However, while not being much of a Nixon fan (if there is such a thing), I think he was much more grounded in his beliefs. I guess what I mean is, you knew where the guy stood, with Hillary, not so much. She tends to be all things to all people. When she turns $1000 into $100,000, well, that's just great but when anyone else does it, she calls it greed. I also agree with your assessment of the GOP, there are some guys there I like but...... ahhh yawn. Thompson would ease some of that but Newt would get rid it all together.

Asa,Laci is doing good. Still not walking on her own yet though. We (including her physical therapist) believe she could,but she's got two things against her-#1,she has a bit of scaredy-cat in her, and #2,she's kinda lazy! She'll take some steps,but other than that she uses her walker,crawls,or is carried. She's getting heavy! But she is coming along good in her overall development. She likes her new house-it's right down the street from me! They're finished moving-hooray!
Good luck to Ro with the eye surgery.Hope she can check in soon.

July 26, 2007 - Msg 54396: Good afternoon, all. Eye surgery is complete, have been back to the doc's office for the post-op check, and all is well. Still dilated, so still a bit blurry, but that yellow haze is gone, and I'm glad. The blurriness will clear quickly, probably by tomorrow, and I'll have great vision. Good news - no cost to me, not a dime. Between my primary ins#rance where I work, and Medicare as secondary, it's all covered. Amazing.

On the political scene - this will probably just fry any feminists out there, but I will probably go with my sons' opinions, and both are favoring Thompson. I almost always voted with my husband when he was living. I don't really study the issues and the candidates, and he did, very thoroughly. I figured if I trusted him enough to marry him and entrust my future to him, I could probably trust his judgment on voting as well. It sure beat voting for someone because they had a nice smile or something. Now, if I did on occasion have a strong opinion myself, then I voted my own beliefs, but usually I agreed with him. My sons both follow the issues closely, they are smart men and have good judgment, so I listen to them. I'd vote my own convictions if I disagreed with them, but so far, I don't. So there.

Well, I'm ready for a nap. That Versed they gave me this morning is still hanging around, and I'm sleepy. My friend who drove me out there has gone home, and the Plum and I are going to just cuddle up and sleep for a while. Have a good afternoon, everyone. --Romeena
July 26, 2007 - Msg 54397: Hey, Possum, I didn't see you there. I'm glad Laci is doing well, and here's a little story that might help with the walking thing. Many years ago, we had some friends who had a little girl who was nearly two, and simply refused to try to walk on her own. She cruised around the furniture, but would not turn loose. Finally, her dad tied some heavy string, or some sort of cord, from one piece of furniture to another and she would hold onto the string and cross the gaps, walking well but holding the string. One day they noticed that one of the strings had come untied and she didn't know it, and was walking holding a piece of loose string! After that, they would just place a length of string in her hand and she'd walk all over the house. Isn't that hilarious? Something along that line might help Laci. It's just a matter of overcoming the scaredy-cat part, and the string provided that reassurance. Worth a try, maybe? They could hold onto a scarf or something, and let her hold it too, and help her walk, then gradually they could let go and leave the scarf in her hand.

Possum, I'd love to make a living by writing. I've sent out a few short stories, but so far, publishers haven't bitten.
I'm sure I'm not the greatest writer in the world, but I am still learning.
I actually just finished reading a book on writing by the author who wrote 'Ella Enchanted'. I found it one day in the kids section of the library, when Kai and I were there for their storytime program.
Quite frankly, it was much more informative and - dare I say it - well written than most of the "adult" books I have seen about writing. I think next time I want to read a book on doing anything, I will check the kids section first.

Boo, you do know that most grasshoppers can fly, don't you? ;)
Still, it's true he could've been knocked unconscious and smushed, and I'm touched that something I wrote gave you pause to think of one of God's creatures. And I'm sure the grasshopper would thank you too. ...That is, unless grasshoppers are selfish, like them giraffes. ;)
I once stopped and picked up a turtle crossing a busy street and put him down on the other side of the road, just because of watching Steve Irwin. Otherwise, I might have just "hoped" that the turtle made it across, and drove on my merry way. But seeing his passion for wildlife, and the interesting way he presented it, made me want to be an active participant, and not just an observer, in that case.

I have a birthday coming up next week and my aunt sent me the cutest card! I thought of Romeena when I saw it. It has an up-close photo of two squirrels standing with a fire hose. The caption reads, "Okay, light the cake"! Ha!

July 27, 2007 - Msg 54413: Good afternoon, all. homemaker, did your cucumbers have anything to do with that big explosion we had in Dallas on Wednesday? Boy, that was really something. The location was apparently a storage facility for tanks of acetylene fuel, used in welding torches and such. Once the fire started, the firefighters couldn't get close enough to fight it effectively because the tanks kept exploding and were flying out of the place like missiles. A large number of cars burned after some tanks hit a parking area and ignited a few vehicles, and the fire just spread to others very rapidly. It was truly a mess. The location is probably about 8 miles or so from me, as the crow flies.

I question why such dangerous material was stored in a place like that. It's right on the edge of downtown Dallas, near a freeway, near Reunion Arena - just not a good location. Seems to me something with that hazardous potential should be stored below ground level, in a facility that can be closed off tight, with a remotely-activated door. In that case, the fire would have gone out in seconds. No oxygen, no fire. But of course - what do I know??

Asa, I want to know more about that corn. I absolutely love corn on the cob. If your new variety is as good as you're expecting, I want to know it, and I want the name so I can look for it in the markets.

Well, I guess I'd better get a few chores done around here. Laundry is caught up, but the kitchen is a bit untidy, and that really bugs me. I'm very particular about keeping my kitchen and bathrooms clean. I sometimes don't make my bed, because my sleeping patterns are so irregular, and the Plum's toys are always scattered about, but I don't want a dirty kitchen or bathroom. Who Packs Your Parachute?

Charles Plum, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, was a jet fighter pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected & parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured & spent six years in a Communist prison. He survived that ordeal & now lectures about lessons learned from that experience.

One day, when Plumb & his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up & said, "You're Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!" "How in the world did you know that?" asked Plumb.

"I packed your parachute," the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise & gratitude. The man pumped his hand & said, "I guess it worked!" Plumb assured him, "It sure did-if your 'chute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today."

Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, 'I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform-a Dixie cup hat, a bib in the back, and bell bottom trousers. I wondered how many times I might have passed him on the Kitty Hawk. I wondered how many times I might have seen him & not even said good morning, how are you or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot & he was just a sailor.

Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship carefully weaving the shrouds & folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn't know.

Now, Plumb asks his audience, 'Who's packing your parachute?' Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory-he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, & his spiritual parachute." He called on all these supports before reaching safety.

His experience reminds us all to prepare ourselves to weather whatever storms lie ahead.

July 27, 2007 - Msg 54429: Well, here I am again, asking for your prayers for my little friend, the Plum. She has recovered from the respiratory infection, no fever for several days. However, she's still down in her hips, walks with a big limp, and is not very active, tends to just remain in one place. Tonight, after she had eaten a little bit in the kitchen, she headed for the bedroom to her pads to potty. There is a step-up from the den into the office, which then leads to the bedroom. I heard her yelp, and ran to check on her. She was sitting on the step, just collapsed on one hip, and had lost control of her bladder. She never does that! I could hear a tiny whine, almost inaudible, but I knew she was hurting. I picked her up and carried her to the bedroom and helped her into her crate, which is her refuge. The door is never closed, she just comes and goes at will, and her water bottle is in there. She has been there ever since.

This is not acceptable, for her or for me. I'll call Dr. Mike in the morning, but I know there's not much he can do. Probably our next step will be to see a canine orthopedist. If they can't help her, then I have a decision to make. This is no kind of life for her. If I could be certain that she isn't in pain, I will carry her anywhere she needs to go, and will make whatever provision is necessary to meet her needs and provide for her comfort. However, I'm sure that she IS in pain, and I can't accept that. I love her too much. So, we'll see. --Romeena

We can just see the little things you describe that she does. We can just hear her the way she acts when the mail is dropped thru the slot each day. We can all see her running to the fridge, wanting her baby carrots. We all care about her too. Again, prayers going up!

I apologize for not stopping by in a few days or so. Okay, 17 days until school and counting. So far I have yet to fall over dead, but again, 17 days. The boys camps are over. I have a prayer request. Nick's Mom is forcing him to visit her for 1 week. He is supposed to leave next Friday, 8/3. Of course he doesn't want to go, but until he turns 14 in March he doesn't have a choice. My request is for 1. his safety on the flights and while there; 2. his Mom doesn't try to keep him; and 3. for Nick's angry heart. I spend alot of time disciplining Nick for calling her numerous curse words. Bryan's in Vegas until Monday night, so I'm dealing with their text messaging wars, and Nick's anger by myself.

Asa- Aw, another granddaughter, how wonderful!

July 27, 2007 - Msg 54434: Thanks, friends. Hazel, thank you especially for such kind words about my baby. Everyone has always joined me in giving her "porchster" status, and I appreciate that. It seems natural to me, because around here, she's a member of the family through and through. My kids treat her like a little sister.

Right now, we have a small problem, because I know she needs to piddle, and she simply cannot get positioned to do so. I guess I can support her and she'll finally do it when it gets bad enough, but right now she just looks at me, confused. She's sitting in the middle of her little potty box on top of the pads - just sitting there, because that's where I put her down. I suppose I'll just pad her chosen area of the bed and hope for the best. Poor little girl.

July 28, 2007 - Msg 54438: Thank you, everyone. I hope you know how much your prayerful support means to me right now. We just got back from Dr. Mike's office, and the news is not good. He X-rayed her hips, and for some inexplicable reaason, both hip joints have just pretty much collapsed. He showed me the film, and it looks terrible. He said it doesn't look like cancer in the bones, it looks more like arthritic changes, but he can't explain why it has gotten so bad so quickly. We have another film from about five months ago, that showed a small dysplasia, but nothing like what's there now. He said her hips have aged several years in these months.
She cannot stand, let alone walk. She doesn't seem to be in any pain as long as she's still, so that's a blessing.

On Monday, I'll be taking her to a canine orthopedist, but Dr. Mike said not to get my hopes up, because there's really not going to be much they can do, if anything. If it was just one hip, it would be easier, but when both are involved, there's just really nowhere to turn. So, I think I'm going to be facing the unthinkable, and we need your prayers. --Romeena

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

July 29, 2007 - Msg 54455: Good evening porch, almost escaped again didnt I! Didn't get to read everything I missed, but it seems the latest topic here is a sad one of Ro and Sugarplum. Pets slowing down is definitly a sad one, my Sugarplum Free (my old cat) who of course died mounths back was lucky enough to die in more of a bang so to speak instead of gradualy slowing down and hobbling. At the time a stroke seemed like the worst thing but as i look back on it, im glad it ended before...the hobbles. Sorry guess this dousnt make you feel any better at all but that is my experience with this type of thing. I am praying for you and I definitly can relate to what your feeling ro, take care.

She will tell you when she has had enough. I know that sounds silly, but it's true. The look is hard to explain, but you will know it when you see it, my 18 year old Boston Terrier, Blarney, hung on as long as she could & I fought with the decision making for a few days, until she made it for me, you'll know. Until then prayers going up from the Crabtree house.

July 29, 2007 - Msg 54460: Good afternoon, dear friends. I just read all the posts, and am sitting here in tears. A little sad, a little scared, a lot happy and grateful for friends. Ray, thank you for sharing "Rainbow Bridge". I have a printed copy, and have shared it with friends, and I thank you for posting it here for everyone to share. Most of us here have pets, and if this doesn't fit your situation now, surely someday it will.

The good word is that this morning, after she ate a carrot, the call of Nature became too strong, and the Plum hauled her little self up and managed to walk a few feet to a place I had provided, and relieved herself of both numbers! That's the first time her bladder has emptied since noon yesterday. I was getting worried, but it finally happened. Now, I use the term "walk" loosely. She moves like a raccoon - back humped up, rolling side to side, back end sort of tucked under - but she does move. That's a big improvement over yesterday, and it gives me hope.

Poor Horatio, we can always count on you to be the traffic cop and direct us to places we need to go. Thank you. No question but that I'll get her a little cart if she needs it, and it looks as though she might. Apparently they're even made gender-specific, to permit elimination for both boys and girls. How creative! I do know that the clinic we're going to supports the philosophy, because I've seen two little dogs out there, back end strapped onto a cart, and they just went zipping down the hall!

Lucy, I'm praying for you and the situation with Nick. I know that must just be a heartbreaker, in so many ways, and a nervewracking trial as well. Hang in there, love.

Millie, constant prayers continue for you, love. You're an inspiration to us all, and we love and respect and admire you more than you'll ever know.

Thanks again to all of you for your kind words of support. Mavis, you're so right. I've lost pets before, and I know the look. They just look at you, and you know they're saying "I've had enough, Mom. Help me." And you do what you must do. I hate this, but it's the price I have to pay for the twelve and a half years of joy, fun, laughter and love I've received from this little creature. And I'll do it again. To refuse to seek another companion would be to say that the joy she gave me wasn't worth the pain, and that's not true.

Romeena, I researched Rimadyl and found the following information:
"Rimadyl should not be given with other NSAIDs (for example, aspirin, etodolac, deracoxib, meloxicam, tepoxalin) or steroids (for example, cortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone, triamcinolone). Tell your veterinarian about all medicines you have given your dog in the past, and any medicines that you are planning to give with Rimadyl. This should include other medicines that you can get without a prescription."
Is it possible that a combination of drugs may have accelrated the degenerative effects of the arthritis?

Physical side affects can be frightening including gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney and liver damage. If your pet’s stomach and liver survive prolonged use of NSAIDs his joints may not. July 29, 2007 - Msg 54466: The points are well taken, Poor Horatio. To answer the first question - no, there are no other drugs in the picture that could have interacted with the Rimadyl. She's on a low-dose thyroid supplement routinely, and has taken a short course of antibiotics twice in the past few weeks, but that's all. The prescribing vets were both aware of the Rimadyl, as well. Also, to address the second question, she has only been on the Rimadyl for about four months, and it was only begun when she began having spells of crippling pain in her hip. To be honest, I have my concerns about Rimadyl, as I've also done some net searches and read more than I wanted to know about it. It's definitely not without its inherent dangers. However, when she can't walk without it, and can with it, the choice gets difficult. Now, however, she's virtually unable to walk with it, so where do I go from here? That's why we're going to see the orthopedist tomorrow, assuming we can get an appointment, and I think we can.

I really appreciate your concern and interest, and your time in checking these things out. I'm always open to any ideas and information, and thank you very much for sharing. This is uncharted territory with her, as she has always been remarkably healthy, and frankly, I'm really scared. One day at a time, sweet Jesus.....

OK, I just had to stop and cry AGAIN at this commercial....I'm wondering if it has the same effect on anyone else here. It's the commercial for the ASPCA with Sarah MacLaughlin. It's partly the music, partly the images(of abused and neglected pets) and partly the whole idea of innocent animals suffering so, but it gets me every time.

Millie, its funny you'd mention that ad so ASPCA. I have seen that also and was going to comment on it this morning here. It is so sad to see animals treated cruel or neglected the way some of these animals have been. Then you meet someone like Romeena who has pure love for all of Gods creatures, great and small, and you just have to love her for it. Romeena, you surely have given Sugarplum a life of joy and happiness, as she has brought you much joy and happiness also. Hopefully that will continue for you both for some time to come. I have always felt that how a human treats animals shows the true character of that person. If my premise is correct, Romeena has achieved Sainthood.

Lucy, how did you catch a cold this time of year? I just hate summer colds. Hope you get feeling better soon.

Watched Man in a Hurry last night and had it confirmed to me why that episode is my all time favorite. The message along with the wit and comedy is perfect. The exasperation displayed by Mr. Tucker as he tells Barney "for the love of Mike, just do it! Go take a nap, go to Thelma Lou's... JUST DO IT!!! And then at the end he's sound asleep on the porch with a half peeled apple in his hand. Don't it just clutch ya?
