To answer your question, I have heard Joel Osteen and benefitted from a study he did on spiritual warfare. I have never been to his church but drive past it every time I take Sean to see his doctor's in Houston. It's not a church, really, but a large convention center called The Compac Center. It seats thousands. I'm not critisizing it but I don't think I would be happy in a church that large. I like the family atmosphere of my church of 200.

Better go see if I can read Erin a story. I picked up some books for her about a little girl named Junie B. Jones. Anyone heard of them? They are funny but the child has pretty bad manners...not sure how I feel about the books yet but Erin sure likes them.

Been one of those do-nothing kind of days. I swear, I almost went crazy. I am so used to having so much to do that when I take a day off I get cabin fever or something. You know how it is when you have a sick child at home and can't go out. Erin is feeling very well this evening, though. I just took her and Sean for a drive and to the Sonic for a snack.

I'm happy to say that tomorrow is Monday! I'll start doing laundry again and have plenty to do. My dad took a little trip to Houston to visit his brother and then they will travel to Beumont to see two elderly cousins (both in their 90's!). It seems so quiet around here with Dad gone.

Well guys, I am just on pins and needles today, hoping that the guy calls from that resort place I interviewed with on Friday(he said he would call today). Don't know if I told you about it, but it is a maintenance job, taking care of little issues as they come up. While I don't have a lot of maintenance experience, they did say they wanted someone without experience, so I guess that's me. Anyway, from the interview, it just seems like it is a real interesting job with lots of variety. And it is not working in a meat department. ;)
So I am real anxious about getting it. I am more anxious because I was going to send a thank you email but I can only remember the name of the lady who set up the interview, but I am unsure of the name of the guy who actually interviewed me. And he wasn't supposed to be the one to interview me, but the other guy wasn't available. I THINK I know his name, but then again I don't want to send an email thanking someone, and it turns out to not be the right name.
So right now I am walking around with my cell phone everywhere I go just so I don't miss it if/when they call.
I know they might not call today and it doesn't necessarily mean I didn't get the job - they just might have gotten busy with other things or something - but I am hoping they do call so I can go in to work tomorrow and give my two weeks notice.
Then at least I could be happy going to work(at the meat department) knowing I will be leaving in two weeks. Right now that is the only thing giving me some hope of getting out of there.(Can you tell I really don't care for that job?)

Thanks Lucy for your thoughts, and I hope your stomach feels better. Millie, I hope you are feeling better as well.

Sterling, I really hope you get that job. I'm glad you have the meat-cutting job right now, but it's tough working at a job you don't like. Better than nothing, but just barely.

I found a vet over in North Dallas that will take care of my little squirrel, amputate the broken tail, try to help his little injured foot, and then will turn him over to a rehabber to recover and possibly be released, but he'll have a home if that isn't feasible. Now all I have to do is catch him! Actually, I think I can because this morning, to my great surprise, he remained in the fork of the tree by my feeding station, and took a piece of shelled pecan from my fingers. If I had been prepared with a small blanket or a towel right then, I think I could have caught him. I'll try again in the morning, prepared!

Been feeling a bit blue this evening. Thinking about Karen alot. The numbness seems to be wearing off and now I am missing her alot, it hurts but I know it will get better. I went for a little visit at my sister's and that helped alot. She was washing cute little baby clothes for her expected grandbaby who should be here in 2 or 3 weeks, I hope. Just talking about the baby made me feel better. I am really looking forward to it. Even though I am the baby's great-aunt, my sister said I could be like it's grandma, too. My sister's grandkids call her Nana...I am trying to figure out what I want the baby to call me. Aunt Julie just seems too long and formal. Maybe Auntie...The baby's daddy used to call me "Ju-Ju" when he was very young. Maybe I'll go with that. You know, life is wonderful in that way. Even though we have to say goodbye to our loved ones sometimes, there is always new life being born! New babies to love are a special blessing, aren't they?

Sterling, take a deep breath and have some Mulberry squeezin's Buddy. You're a wreck! (just kidding...) Hope everything works out the way you want it to.

Sorry about your tummy Lucy. I have had my share of the same kind of troubles for about 3 weeks now. I figure mine is stress (it's NOT a bun in the oven, as I mentioned last week). Tried some peppermint tea but it didn't do much.

SPOT, I can relate. Bruce and I were very independant and had seperate homes, etc. and we dated for 5 years before we married. It wasn't easy taking the plunge and getting married but I sure am glad we did. God has blessed our relationship so much. We serve the Lord together and are raising our children in the faith. It is a wonderful life.

Well, think I'll hit the hay. Tomorrow will be a better day, I have a feeling.

Im so glad to hear you are taking good care of it either way, death is always sad but there is something in my mind about animal death that destroy's me and especally un-nessacary animal death. I guess a good example of this for me was in the movie "King Kong" when Kong is being shot on top of the building, so very sad almost even cry'd.

Good to hear things are a little brighter Boo with the new baby coming and all! Baby's never really particularly trill me to much, but many say this UNTIL they have one of there own. I'll just have to wait for that I guess.

Sorry for my pointless rambling just thought I'd try and get my bit in on stuff since I've been gone so often.

July 17, 2007 - Msg 54180: Hey Warren, I know what you mean. I remember seeing King Kong at the movies way back in high school and it bothered me so much that I have not seen a King Kong movie since (in 30 years).

Warren, I never understood why people were so crazy about babies when I was growing up. I was the youngest in my family and found kids in general a nuisance! ha...THEN my sister had her baby (who is the young man named Matt who is expecting the new baby I was talking about last night). I fell so head over hills in love with that baby boy that I have never gotten over it and love all babies since then! Hope you have the same wonderful, scary experience some day soon. I say scary because once you love a baby that way, life never feels as safe, but you wouldn't have it any other way.

Still rainy here but not as hot (hooray).

We got some much needed rain this morning but it did put a damper on my goat trimming. I am putting the finishing touches on the woodworking projects - polyurethene - then they should be finished. The Vet Science poster is almost done. We did it on instruments that a vet uses - I hope he does well. He did all of the computer work himself. And fainted at the vet's office too - that should be worth a blue ribbon!

Well - I hope Millie is okay. She is so special to the porch. Asa is just special too!

July 17, 2007 - Msg 54184: Good morning, all. No news about the squirrel, he hasn't come into the yard this morning, which worries me a bit. He's usually here and rooting around the feeding station by now.

DWF, I know exactly what you mean about animal deaths being upsetting. Roadkill makes me want to cry. They seem so innocent, and I just can't stand cruelty in any form. It wouldn't do for me to encounter someone abusing an animal, I'd probably shoot them out of their shoes. This particular squirrel is a wild one, but he's been badly hurt, either by another, larger squirrel or more likely by a dog or cat. His little tail is broken, just dangling and is infected. His left front leg is injured, he won't put weight on it, but does use his hand to hold food. Yesterday he took a pecan from my fingers, so I think I might be able to catch him, and I've found a vet who will treat him if I can get him there. Not looking good this morning, though, since he hasn't shown up.

Boo, I'm so sorry you're having to go through the grief of losing Karen, but I'm glad you see your sister's expected grandbaby as a point of light. What a beautiful line you wrote - "once you love a baby that way, life never feels as safe, but you wouldn't have it any other way." So perceptive, and so true. As the Bible says, "The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away." We don't always understand that, but it doesn't matter, because He does. "When you don't understand, when you can't see the plan, when you can't trace His hand, trust His heart." I've always loved that line. Our choir used to sing it, and I always got teary on those lines.

Well, I'm off. Gonna meet my running buddy and her grandson for lunch, then we're going to see "Ratatouille". Should be good for some laughs.

Lucy, I don't think Sheriff Frank was really saying there was anything wrong with the porch. He's another computer whiz like our own dear Floyd, and I suspect he was just issuing a friendly challenge to him to redecorate the porch. He did say, though, that if we like it the way it is, he's not complaining. Also, if you read Floyd's note at the bottom, you'll see that he states he has tried to keep it the way it was originally designed, and it may be that Frank was letting Floyd know that he wouldn't be hurt if he wanted to change it. Personally, I don't think we need a bunch of frills and furbeloes, I like just like it is - the way the ol' Sheriff designed it way back when.

I thought I would check in one last time before I head to bed, been a busy, stress-filled day here. Along with the grooming business and the food truck~aka~gut wagon/roach-coach, we also have an auto repair shop here in town. Well, last night we got over there to pick up the day's paperwork and found a vehicle missing!! Customer has been a real pain as far as getting her to pay the bill ($1300 bucks worth of bill!) and we were holding it until the bill was paid. well, anyway, People, Inc. holds the title on it and I guess she hasn't been paying them either. Seems they came, after hours mind you, and picked up the vehicle to take it to auction.
They are supposed to pay the shop bill, but we are not taking any chances, going to get a mechanic's lien on it. We were up half the night dealing with the Police Dept only to get up at 5am to get started on the food truck. I am so ready to sleep tonight!

I first appeared here back in the late 1990's. Then I disappeared for a few years, then reappeared for a short time, then disappeared again, then reappeared for the last time when Don Knotts died.
While things may look plain and simple here, I am not aware of any complaints from the regular posters about that. We want this project to be economical and not time-consuming for Floyd, our current gracious host.
If you like, why not scroll to the bottom of the current page and click on LET ME KNOW IF THE PORCH NEEDS A SWEEP link to offer your suggestions directly to Floyd via email? He might growl at you, but he won't bite.
Finally, Floyd has saved Front Porch postings as old as 2001 here in the archives section (see Archives link below). Sheriff Frank, do you have any of the pre-2001 Front Porch postings saved somewhere? If you do, is it possible to make them available to Floyd in case he would like to add them to our archives here?

Well, the Plum is feeling poorly tonight, doesn't want to eat, had to really talk to her to get her pills down. She keeps coming in here looking at me, like she's trying to tell me something, and I can't figure out what it is. I think she just feels bad, and wants me to fix it. I sure do wish I could. She'll probably be fine in the morning, she's done this before, but it worries me anyway. Poor little girl.

The little injured squirrel didn't show up at all today. I'm hoping he'll come in tomorrow, and I'll try to catch him. Animals! They just break your heart sometimes, but I love them.

We are in the process of moving our office suite, not a big move, just to a larger suite across the hall bit it distrupts things for a few days. Hopefully the move will be completed by July 30th and we will be ready for business in our new space. Northeast TN has been getting some much needed rain the past couple days. About the subject of “improving” this here porch, well, surprising as it is I have a few thoughts on the subject. Now I’m not opposed to change, but for the life of me I can’t think of how you could change this board to make it more efficient at doing what it does—and what it does is grow friendships. Recently Miss Crump’s board upgraded from its old format to a new style. Most of the users really like the new format (and it is perty FLOYD). But that board is very different from this one. Here, TAGS is what drew us here and remains a common link, but it’s not why we keep coming back. We keep coming back to visit, share, pray, celebrate, and commiserate with people we have come to whom we have come to feel close. Unlike other TAGS boards where the show and its themes are the popular topic of conversation, here they are a sideline, and important sideline, but a sideline nonetheless. Heck, most of want to read all the posts we’ve missed if we can, not skip to the “interesting” ones. This porch was meant to be (or has come to be) slow and easy and conducive to growing friendships—not just as a means of sharing a common love of Mayberry. It isn’t necessarily about capturing the trivia of Mayberry but about capturing its spirit. And it’s done that. I just can’t think of any newfangled way of improving on that. We owe FRANK and FLOYD and great debt of gratitude for creating and maintaining this very special place.

Reagan arrived a year ago today - got a party planned for the weekend when grandpa and grandma can come. They always give grandbabies a red wagon for the first birthday, so we're excited about that. Evie has decided she is in charge of making the birthday cake and cupcakes for everyone.

AFD: Thanks for remembering Veda's b-day. And a very Happy Birthday to Reagan! We also are having a party this weekend so grandparents and aunts and uncles can come. Our house is small, so we'll be having it outside. Pray for nice weather! Veda finally started crawling a few weeks ago and is making up for lost time. You should have seen her in church last week. The Mrs. was liturgist, so I was going solo. We usually sit in teh second pew, and I made the mistake of putting her on the floor. I barely got the end of her foot as she made a beeline for the back of the church. The pastor and my wife caught the scene and starting cracking up. Anyway, glad you and yours are doing well. How are you holding up in the heat? If I eremeber correctly, y'all don't have central a/c either.

Happy Birthday to our porch babies! I can't believe they're a year old already. Time sure does fly, doesn't it?

Would you believe, after ALL that rain we had here in north Texas, that the leaves are falling from my trees in great numbers? The impression is that they're dry - this usually happens in late August, when the heat and drought get to them - but my garden center friend/neighbor says it's because we had too much water. He says the ground is deeply saturated, blocking the oxygen from the roots, and says there's not a thing we can do about it. One small consolation - anything that falls and is cleaned up now won't have to be raked up in November! In most of the yard, my yard man friend can just mulch them as he mows. Some very heavy concentrations have to be bagged, but most of it is mulched, so that's a good thing.

Who says birds aren't smart? There is a very large male grackle out back who has learned how to get a really good bath. He goes to the fountain rocks and settles himself down over the water source, where it bubbles out of the end of a pipe hidden in a depression in a boulder. He just squats over the outflow, with the water hitting his chest and bubbling the length of his body, flowing off the end of his tail! He will sit there for ten minutes or more. I'll bet there isn't a mite on him, at least not on the underside of his body. He's about the only one who can do this, all the other birds are too light and the force of the water tosses them aside.

Well, Eddie is here to mow, guess I'd better go pay him, then I've got to catch a nap, as I'm working tonight. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

I just checked my email and found a notice from the Humane Society (yes, I'm on their email list) regarding the indictment brought against the Atlanta Falcon's "star" quarterback Michael Vick. Some star. 52 battered and beaten pit bulls were removed from his property. Also found were a fighting pit, training tools (instruments of torture) and evidence to indicate that unsatisfactory dogs were executed by drowning, hanging, gunshot, or electrocution. Yes, I know, he's innocent until proven guilty, but there doesn't appear to be any doubt. This chamber of horrors was on his property, how could he not know? Never mind the fact that pit fighting is illegal, as important as that may be. More important, it is brutal, vicious, inhumane, cruel and sadistic. It is nothing less than shameful that a "sport" such as NFL football would glorify and reward a monster/man that would take pleasure and profit from indulging in such an activity. Shame on the NFL, shame on the Falcons (don't tell me nobody knew about it) and shame on the courts if they don't slap him down hard and give him some serious jail time - him and anybody who was with him in this disgusting venture.

A nation can rightfully be judged by how its citizens treat the weak and helpless. A pit bulldog may not be weak, but he can easily be rendered helpless by cruel humans. Dogfighting is disgusting, and I'm almost glad this situation came to light. Maybe now people will wake up and do something about it, by putting some real teeth into the laws. Let the humans feel the bite for a change!

DWF, you're right. Where is the clean, wholesome sports star image we used to value? Some of them, I suppose, still try to stay above the garbage, but far too many are more interested in demonstrating that they're above the law! We really need to do some housecleaning in America. Spoiled movie brats, spoiled sports figures, rich lawbreakers going free just because they have the $$, it's not right, and we're going to pay for it. Our kids learn what they see, and what today's kids see isn't very pretty.

I know Vick isn't the only pit fighting operator in the country, by a long shot. He is, however, very visible. Should he be singled out and punished, when others are getting away? Well, maybe so! He has been given a talent and an opportunity to use it, and this is how he repays? The Bible says "To whom much is given, much will be required." With his fame and wealth should go responsibility. If he can't accept that his position places him in a moral spotlight, and confers upon him the responsibility to be the best that he can be, then he's just a total waste of space and resources.
