July 06, 2007 - Msg 53946: I think I would have really liked your husband, Ro. I'm sure you miss him greatly. How wonderful that you have sons that followed in their Daddy's footsteps when it came to respecting their mom.

Hey Goober!! Great to hear from you again. You've been away from the porch way yonder too long! Great news about the new baby you are expecting. When's the due date? How is little Goobette?....maybe you can name the new baby Hogette if it's a girl.

July 06, 2007 - Msg 53947: Hey Folks

Goober-Great to see ya!

possum-Sorry to hear about the fall but glad to hear that Laci is OK.

Romeena 7 Boo- I've enjoyed reading your posts. They have brought some memories of my Dad back to me. Boy, do I miss him. He passed in January of '78, I was 17. Ro, from the way you described your husband he reminds me of my father. During one of the last hockey games that my dad saw me play in I was involved in a fight, a bench brawl. I was in an adult league, which my Dad hated but let me play in. The fellow that I fought was one of the league "tough guys" and I was one of the "newbies" but I was one of the bigger guys on my team, so I was a target for this goon. Well, I held my own against this guy and was pretty full of myself for it. After the game a lot of the others players came up to me with high-fives and stuff regarding the fight. And, like I said I was pretty full of myself, because of it. However, the car ride home was real quiet so I asked my Dad what he thought and all he said was, "Do you have to talk like that." During the fight the language got shall we say colorful. At that time my feelings were hurt but that stuck with me and I've learned from it. Don't get me wrong Dad always let me know, all of his kids know, how proud he was of me/us. He was a guy that didn't have to pontificate at great length, few words big meanings. Anyway, sorry to ramble for so long.

Sergeant Esterhaus: "Hey, hey, hey, let's be careful out there."

July 06, 2007 - Msg 53952: Good Morning porch. Been busy this week and not much time to rock. It is good to see you all. Congrats to Goober and family, what wonderful news. Hey to Idell, Tom and all the others porch folks missing in action. Don't be gone for so long. My business partner has been off this week so I have bee holding down the fort. I will be glad to see him on Monday. Congrats to Mavis!! I saw your pictures online, sounds like a lovely wedding and a good time was had by all. You deserve to be happy. Hey to Romeena and Boo. Me They, SPOT, ASA, MDC,Millie,auh20,Hazel, Tom and all. Ya'll come to my place for dinner tonight. Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, sliced tomatoes, squash, SLAW, rolls, sweet tea and home make chocolate layer cake for dessert. we will eat about 6 pm. Please pray for several people I know, they have each been diagnosed with different types of cancer. They will each appreciate your sending prayers up for them and I will too. Me-They, one of my sons friends was telling him he should get his ear pierced. My son would never do that or so he says. My husband told him if he did he would sew lace on his undies!! :) I guess everyone has to make that choice, but I worry about the choice these kids make at such a young age and then as a middle aged adult having to look at it then. I don't want to start something on the porch, but I thought what my husband told my son was funny.
see you all at suppoer. Big Maude

July 06, 2007 - Msg 53953: I agree, Maude. Your husband's response was funny...and creative! Prayers for your friends with cancer. Very scary, isn't it, to know so many with it?

Well Idelle Bushey! It's been too long. Hey, you know what you can do about that toe fungus....(ok, someone has to say it...)...VICKS!

So much to do today I don't even know where to start. At least Bruce finally put the dishwasher in for me so I don't have to wash dishes anymore! yea!!

Alright, Me-They, what do you want to talk about besides piercing? We've already talked about toe fungus....how about colonics?

Got to start on that mountain of laundry...go get your shorts M-T...maybe I'll sew some lace on them....

July 06, 2007 - Msg 53973: Good evening, all. Just got home from a bunco party - lots of fun. Eleven women, mostly all good friends, and a couple of newbies who were subbing for regulars who couldn't be there. You never heard so much laughter and fun. We're supposed to be twelve, but had a dropout at the last minute, so had to play with a "ghost" - the partner for the empty chair just plays for both. Of course, the ghost idea led us down many a hilarious path. Once, the ghost had made it to the head table, and the three people there were involved in conversation and forgot to ring the bell to start the play. Someone asked them what they were waiting for, and without missing a beat, one woman said they were waiting for the ghost to get back from the restroom. Well, at least it seemed funny at the time - maybe you had to be there.

Idelle, it sure is good to see you! Don't stay away so long. Just be sure you don't get too close to Dud Wash, though - Charlene is still pretty jealous.

Well, I'm ready to hit the ironing board. The Plum keeps coming in and suggesting we go cuddle a while - I've been gone all day. Went to watch the grandsons final swimming lesson for this class. They'll be enrolled in the next level, of course, but it's amazing how much they've already learned. The oldest one, who is six, can actually swim completely across the pool unassisted. The little one, who is three, is still learning to kick properly and can now blow bubbles underwater.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

"Bad sheriff! Baaaaad sheriff!!"

July 07, 2007 - Msg 53974: Hey Romeena, I played Bunco once at a New Year's eve party our church was throwing and it was really fun. The party was at one of the member's home and they sat up card tables in the kitchen. I don't like to play games, usually but Bunco was fun.

Well, I'm up early for a Saturday but I have been feeling kind of sickly the past week. Stomach troubles that wake me up or keep me from eating, etc. Don't know if it's stress related or what...at my age I certainly hope it's not another, "bun in the oven"! Lord help me!

Well, everyone is still sleeping so maybe I will try to sleep a bit longer. Ro, I thought about you last night; I had worked so hard all day with the housework and laundery, cooking, etc so I was on my feet all day and most of the evening. When I went to bed last night, I had that old familiar pain running down the outside of my right leg! Put the heating pad on it and it felt good enough for me to fall asleep. How is your sciatic pain? Also wanted to ask you how Sugarplum is doing...did she have a bad day after playing with Bentley (did I get that name right?)?

I'll be back later today. It's gonna be a busy one. Karen's little girl has a birthday party today AND my nephew's wife is having her baby shower (both at the same time!). I don't know what I am going to do. I talked on the phone to Zach yesterday and he seems to be getting stronger. He did ask me if he could call me at least once everyday and I told him he could call me anytime he wanted to, sweet boy. I wish I could just take him away from all the pain but life doesn't work that way. I can only be there and pray that all this will make him stronger somehow. I find that with me, I am getting over the shock of losing Karen but I am starting now to really miss her and to dream about her coming back. I guess this is normal?

Better go while I can still catch a few more winks...

Boo

July 07, 2007 - Msg 53975: good morning all..
Yes, Ro, its been a while. I certainly cant make any promises that I will stay regularly, isnt that terrible to say?? But..w/ being a busy mama and not wanting to be so attached to the computer I have to make wise choices..
Anyway..
Boo: hope you get to feeling better. Are you taking anything different? I began taking one of those weight loss pills. Sometimes I feel blah, but I think its when I've had too much to eat (like going back for seconds) and that pill supresses the appetite, anyway..Who is this Zach and Karen? not being nosey, just want to be informed of what I've missed!
Have a great day!
Idelle

July 07, 2007 - Msg 53976: Good morning, all. After a losing battle with back and leg pain last night, no sleep (zero) and having to work tonight, I'm headed back for the bed. I gave up and got up at 6:30, went outside and cleaned a clogged pond filter while fighting the mosquitoes off. Miserable things, they're as big as buzzards, I'm going to start carrying a rifle out there!

Good grief, Boo, don't even think of such a thing. That would be about all you'd need. And yes, you know very well that the grieving you're doing and the way it manifests is perfectly normal. Don't fight it, just take it a day at a time. Helping Karen's kids will help you in the long run.

The Plum is fine right now, as long as I keep her on the Rimadyl. We see her oncologist on Monday, so I may learn more then, but she seems to be doing well at the moment. She survived the weekend with Bentley (yes, you were right) and seemed none the worse for wear. Actually, on Sunday afternoon she was challenging him, with the typical canine play posture - rear in the air, chest down, front feet slapping on the floor. They had a ball!

Well, I'm off to bed, yet again. I think I'll take a Toradol this time. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

July 07, 2007 - Msg 53977: Hey Ro..
Your Sugarplum is on Rimadyl?? I think my mother in law is also.

Idelle

July 07, 2007 - Msg 53978: Is that a joke, Idelle?...kinda sounds like it could be a mother-in-law joke...To answer your question, Karen was my best friend for 20 years. She had a stroke and died in May. She was 42. Zach is her 13 yr old son. She also had a 8 yr old daughter and a 21 yr old daughter who has alot of problems (married to an alcoholic and has a baby, living in terrible conditions by choice).

Sorry you didn't get any sleep Ro. Hope you can get some rest today. I really think you should consider using some of you sick time and staying off your feet for a few days. Can you take aspirin or advil? Advil really helps me because it reduces the inflammation....just some friedly advice....

July 07, 2007 - Msg 53983: You don't like meatballs, Tom? I guess it depends on who made them, right?

Boo, your advice is good, under most circumstances. I've been taking Advil, up to the recommended limit, and alternating with Tylenol. Those two, and Toradol, is about the limit of the pain meds I can take. Toradol helps the most, but of course, it's only recommended for a very limited time, due to the GI side effects, and the prolonging of bleeding time. As for staying off my feet, unfortunately when I lie down is when it hurts the most. I guess I'll have to learn to sleep standing up! I'd love to call in sick and just stay home, but due to the time I've already taken off in the past twelve months, I'm one call-in away from formal counseling. Two attacks of vertigo, eye surgery, another back attack, Sugarplum's woes, it all adds up. So, hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to work I go. Thank goodness it's just for one night, then I'm off until Tuesday.

OK, that's enough moaning and groaning from me. Hmmm. I wonder if it would help to smear Vicks on my back? Or maybe some mayo? (heehee) Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Well, I took the kids to a baseball game (we have a minor league team here called The Hooks) and I met a friend there. She told me something disturbing about Karen's children. She said their Dad broke up with his new wife. She is the one that Karen's little girl is so close to. I feel just sick about it. That poor child has been through so much. Please remember them in your prayers. The two of them have only been married for 3 weeks.

Well, better go get the kids to bed,

July 08, 2007 - Msg 53993: Good afternoon, all. Got home from work this morning, knew I'd never make it through church without falling asleep, so stayed home and tried to sleep. Did pretty well for about three hours, then too much back pain, so got up. Will call the doc tomorrow and tell her that August 28 is not acceptable, I need some help NOW! And that's all I'll say on the subject, too many folks with real problems on this porch - I'd prefer not to sit here and whine.

The Plum goes to the oncologist in the morning. Please pray for her, friends, and for me, that the news will be good. She seems to be feeling just fine, but she's never had any cancer-related symptoms. Her visible problems have been with pain in her hips, apparently arthritis, which responds well to the Rimadyl. And by the way, Idelle, LOL! That was a good one! So you're saying if somebody flew a quail through the room, she'd stand up and point?

MDC, that apple cider vinegar is good for lots of things, from treatment of various ailments (like toe fungus), to preventing other problems, to killing weeds and fireants, to removing lime deposits from teakettles and shower heads. Actually, the apple cider vinegar is a bit more expensive, and a little gentler, so it's best for healthcare purposes. For the other stuff, the cheapest old gallon jug of vinegar works just as well.

Well, the Plum is wondering if she's going to get any supper tonight, so guess I'd better go feed her. She has come in here twice, checking on me. She just stands and watches me, then heaves a big sigh and goes back to the living room. Poor little thing, it's awful to have a mom who hangs out with computers.

Have a great evening, everyone. I may drop back by later. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Idelle, I'm sorry I thought you were joking about the Rimadyl, but since it's a veterinary medicine, used mostly for arthritic dogs, you can see how we all thought you were making a really clever commentary about your mother-in-law! I wish you'd find out for sure, because if Rimadyl is also being used in human medicine I'd love to know about it. It's not out of the realm of possibility, because it's an anti-inflammatory drug, and many types of cancer involve an inflammatory process. Hmmm. Interesting!!

No, Spot, I'm not working tonight. I work Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week, then off until Wednesday of the following week.

To Goober and Rev, I want both of you to know how much I enjoy your CDs. I have them in the car, and play them over and over as I go about my day. Sure does brighten things up. Good old Southern country gospel music - you just can't beat it!

July 08, 2007 - Msg 54003: Hey, all - just passing through. Sterling, I just realized I never answered your query regarding "Father Ted", one of the Britcoms. Yes, I've watched it, and find it very funny. I also enjoy "The Vicar of Dibley". It gets a little rowdy at times, but Dawn French is just hilarious in her own way. The overblown characters are almost caricatures, but that's what makes them so funny. That sleazy, icky guy who has a crush on the vicar - good grief! Hyacinth Bucket will always be my favorite, though. Patricia Routledge is superb. Of course, Dame Judi Dench in "As Time Goes By" is legendary, and teamed with Geoffrey Palmer she's irresistible. Yep, I love my Britcoms!

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54007: Thanks Millie and SPOT. I did sleep very well last night and didn't wake up at 5 or 6 feeling sick! Millie, its always good to hear from you. You must be needing the sleep. Watching any good movies these days? I'm in the mood for a good Fred McMurray or Claudette Colbert movie....maybe I'll watch The Egg and I...wish we could watch it together.

Gotta go put the car in the shop for some repairs...

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54011: Hubby's vacation is over so now I can come back and visit. The goats go to the fair on July 22 and projects go in on July 21. Some last minute sanding on the woodworking projects.

Boo and Romeena - I am off the porch for a few days and you both fall apart. Sciatica and heart ! Prayers for both!

Millie - you are always in my prayers and thoughts!

MDC - I know who the Vicks poet is!

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54012: Hahaha! Guess what? I know who the Vicks poet is too, but I'm not tellin'. Wild horses couldn't make me tell. You can drip water on my head, do anything you want to, but I'll never tell.

Just got home with the Plum, and the news is wonderful. Three views of her chest, and there is absolutely nothing but air in her lungs. Since she's so small, the same views got most of her bones as well, and they're also perfectly clear. The doctor probed her neck thoroughly, and can find no evidence of tumor activity in her thyroid. He's basically stumped. As he said, "I've never seen a case like this. She's an enigma." Of course, I told him that many people, all around the country, have prayed for this little furkid, and that I believe God answers prayer. He just grinned at me, and said he wouldn't argue with that. He was happy that she takes Rimadyl for her arthritis in her hips, because it is being used more or less experimentally with dogs to treat low-activity cancers. Idelle, I told him about our conversation about your MIL, but he said to his knowledge it is not being used in humans at all. Still, I wonder. Did you find out what she's taking?

Back to the Plum, he gave me some Doxycycline for her - it's an antibiotic, but is also being used for some low-activity cancers. It won't hurt her, and if there is anything lurking somewhere, it may help suppress it. So, what we have here is an apparently healthy dog, apparently the result of the prayers of family and friends. I couldn't be more thrilled, and grateful. I know I won't have her forever, and she's no spring chicken at 12 1/2, but I'll take what I can get, as long as she's enjoying her life. Thanks, friends.

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54014: Romeena - We love the Britcoms up here in this part of the porch - I think having the Buckets as neighbors would make life quite enjoyable. If I could find a neighborhood like that I would move back to town. It just isn't quite like that where my in-town relatives live. Seems everyone is too suspicious of neighbors. I guess the way people you know when you were growing up leave the area and new people you don't know move it makes it harder to keep making new friends.
I always watched As Time Goes By , Waiting for God and Last of the Summer Wine. Our local PBS just stopped all the British sitcoms they were running; no Hyacinth on Saturday evenings. Last month the BBC America canceled carrying the sitcoms including Benny Hill, Are You Being Served and Keeping Up Appearances. youtube.com/watch?v=T-iDlTBZhKg - this address should take you to Patricia Routledge. Give the Plum a pat for me.

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54015: Afternoon Porch! We are home, dad-burn it! Sure could have stayed in those mountains alot longer, but reality beckons.
First off, welcome to you Sharon!
We had a great time on our honeymoon, didn't do a whole lot, but we didn't want to do much of anything except be together, so it worked out great. I sent the picture of the marquee at Bristol Motor Speedway to Romeena, our wedding pictures are still being worked on, we hope to have at least 2 of the discs this evening.
Best get off here for a while, gotta head to Gray, TN this evening for a kennel club meeting & have other stuff to do as well, I told you, back to the old grind. Wonder what causes that?

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54020: Hi Boo- I'm back to walking now that I'm full time retired. 1 hour per day of as fast as I can walk. I started to mix in a few short distance jogs and some arm calisthenics during the walk. In this heat the latest I want to be out there is 9:30 to 10:30 am. After 2 1/2 weeks I feel the improvement already.
Best wishes to Mavis and her hubby.

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54021: Good evening, everyone. Marty, it's good to hear from you. Thanks for the tip on Patricia Routledge. Isn't she just wonderful?

I'm still on an emotional high from the visit to the Plum's doctor today. A good friend came over this evening, and the Plum was so excited, jumping around and running through the room like a puppy - you'd never believe there was ever supposed to be anything wrong with her. It's amazing.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words, but especially thank you for your prayers for my little furkid. I firmly believe that the prayers of family and friends are the reason she's doing so well today.

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54022: Hi all, nothing to post for a while, did see Idelle with foot fungus...a sure cure for it, (don't laugh) but make up a mixture of whole ground corn meal and soak your feet in it for a while each day for a few weeks. If it doesn't work, I will pay for the corn meal. Get it at an organic nursery or if you can't find, let me know. Could tell a long story about it working and a physician saying it must have been something he did in the two years he was treating it.
Ro, prayers work. Sugar Plum had no doubts to block God's will. She let Him take complete control. God answers all prayers, we just sometimes don't realize we have to do our part. Total faith has to be there.

July 09, 2007 - Msg 54024: Thanks Marty, that is very encouraging. Glad you are feeling good!

Interesting about the cornmeal, Ray...never had a toe fungus...wonder if it would work on atheletes feet, too?

I had a long post earlier and I think I tried everything to get it past the censor and tried for quite awhile, but never could. So frustrating!

Well, I had a headache earlier and took some Tylenol PM so I am sleepy. Better get to bed..

Stay cool MDC and the rest of you, too. Looks like a heat wave going on in many states.

Boo

July 10, 2007 - Msg 54025: Well, hey there, Ray. Where have you been, friend? About the cornmeal to treat fungal infections, I don't doubt it at all. Horticultural cornmeal is used to treat blackspot and mildew on roses, and it works. Sounds like pretty much the same thing to me. Boo, I would think it would work on athlete's foot fungus as well. Sure couldn't hurt!

As for trouble with the censor, when you have that problem, just copy the message and paste it into something else, either a Word document, or your computer's notepad, and work on it there. You can try breaking it into segments - just post the first few lines and see if it goes through. Then the next few, and so on. Sooner or later, you'll find the group that won't work, and that will narrow your search for the problem. I've done that several times, and have managed to find the problem. It's always something I least expected. If you'd like, you can copy and paste the part that won't work into an email and send it to me and I'll help you look for the problem.

Well, I'm off to the ironing board. Got to work tomorrow night and Wednesday night, so will probably sleep late, or maybe get up early and shoot for a nap in the afternoon. Or maybe sleep late and still take a nap. Hmmm. That sounds like a pretty good idea. I love naps.

SPOT...have you had those tacos from Burger King? I don't think much of them, but Mrs Goober likes them. Reminds her of Jack In the Box tacos...and since we don't have those here, it's the closest she can get. :)

Ya'll be good...

Don't count on me for supper, Spot, I have to work, but I'll try the tacos myself one of these days. Sure wish I could spend a day fishing with you and Miss Sherry - I'm not much of a fisherman, but I do enjoy it, actually enjoy just being around the water.

July 10, 2007 - Msg 54031: You mean Dud? Unfortunately lots of folks come through for a season and then go missing.

Thanks for that information, Ro. I appreciate it. The truth is I don't even know how to copy and paste. I've never had the time to learn to do it. Bruce knows how to do that stuff but we never seem to have the extra time for him to teach me how to do those kinds of things. I just wish the censor was like it used to be when it highlighted the offending parts so you didn't have to search for it. I wonder why it changed?

Been a busy morning. My poor dad is getting more and more confused and needs my help more, and so does mom. The kids are going through a stage in which they seem to fight alot and it is very stressful. Seems like everyone in my world (except for Bruce) is so demanding. I need to find some ways to deal with the stress without coming unraveled.

Think I'll go take a break...never did get my full cup of coffee this morning before it went cold.

MDC-No one told me there would be a test. The dog ate my notes, honest. Did ya happen to see Michael Moore have his hissy fit. I used to watch the Squares quite a bit. It was really hot here today, 95 degrees I think. That's just 20 degrees behind you. I can't believe ya'll can even function in that weather.

Ro-Great news about the Plum.

First Britany, then Paris, and now this morning I heard that Madonna my not have actually been playing the guitar at "The Sky is Falling" concert the other day. Just when you think you've heard it all something more astonishing comes along.

Goober-I didn't know the BK made taco's.

Boo-Prayers for you, friend. I hope things ease up a bit and you can find some peace. Life sure does throw a bunch at us at times, doesn't it? But, it's too hot to have more dumped on ya.

BK makes tacos?? Is this what illegal immigration has come to? haha
