May 23, 2007 - Msg 52584: Thank you, my friends, for your kind words and many prayers. Tonight at 8pm, Karen was taken into surgery to remove her liver and kidneys for transplant and then life-support was removed. We had the opportunity to spend much time with her today and we were able to make some decisions that needed to be made. Although Karen was a nurse, she worked home-health and was new to the job (no benefits). As a single mom, she had struggled just to make ends meet so there was no money. My very loving church stepped in and will provide for a funeral for Karen. I am telling you, after the way my church family stepped in and ministered to our needs, I have a deeper understanding of the term, "Body of Christ". Me-They, the children are doing better than I expected. Zach, who is 13 was very close to his mom and is hurting but not to the degree that I anticipated. He is comforted with the thought that his mom is with Jesus. The little girl, Ali, who is 7, is doing ok for now. Karen also had a 21 year old daughter that I have talked about before. She is the one with the alcoholic boyfriend who had another baby last year, etc. The 21 year old is having a very tough time but I have felt God's comfort, especially over the younger children and am very thankful for that. They do have a father (Karen's ex-husband) who they are with now. He was off-shore yesterday and didn't get in until 10pm last night. He loves his children but is not any easy person to live with. He puts alot of demands and stress on his son, especially. Zach called me today and wanted me to pick him up and bring him home with me and I did that. He is very close to me (even calls me Mom). I helped bring Zach into the world. When Karen had Zach, I took care of her myself and helped her deliver him. I have been with her when she delivered her children and she was with me when I had mine. We spent almost every holiday together for the past 20 years. We attended church together. We spoke on the phone and saw each other at least once a week and shared everything in our lives. She has been a huge part of my life and I can't imagine what it will be like without her. I always expected we would grow older as friends and be there together when our kids graduated, got married, had children..Life sure can throw you a curve now and then. Anyway, I will be away from the computer for a bit, I think. I have to help take care of things. Again, thank you so much, your prayers are felt.

Me-They,thanks for the healing prayers. The symptoms eased up a good bit since the cortisone shot yesterday. You know,you're the second person who has told me that shoes might be aggravating the problem. I always bum around in a pair of felt clogs-never seemed uncomfortable,but now I think I just may give 'em a rest for a bit. Thanks again.

Hey Rev, we got lots of smoke from the Georgia wildfires on Monday.I had just put my laundry out on the line when it drifted into S. C.! Ya think maybe somebody's trying to smoke me out from under my rock? Ha! All together we have had it in our part of S.C. about 3-4 times. I can imagine how bad it is in Ga. You stay out of it-not good for your voice!

The one thing that keeps coming to me, about your situation, is, as sad as it is, think about how much worse it would be for those kids, as well as Karen, if they didn't have you. I don't mean to lessen your mourning at all but what a blessing you are to Karen and her children. As cognizant as she was when this started and to be able to reach out to a friend like you to care for her kids, wow, that must have eased her mind. Knowing her kids were gonna be safe, what a gift you gave her. We could all use a Boo in our life.

BOO: I also want to thank you for recommending "Blue Like Jazz." I am about halfway done, and this may be the best book I've read in years. I love it and highly recommend it to all of you porchsters. It's an easy read, but will touch you in a meaningful way.

I wonder where LUCY has been lately? She hasn't been by in a number of weeks, which is not her typical MO. Hope everything is okay.

Charlotte- Pipeman(PappaBear, Colt) and I still communicate via snail mail. He currently has no computer. He is doing pretty well, and will, I'm sure, be decorating graves this weekend once again. I met him only thru this site, but we have kindled a great friendship.

I took off work at noon today and sat on the pier and watched the Blue Angles perform, I never get tired of watching them. We weren't sure they would perform since they lost a member of the team recently. I have a busy week-end coming up, dog sitting my two granddogs. Both are pampered and I'm sure I'll have written instructions for both of them.

May 23, 2007 - Msg 52604: Thank you Millie. You are beautiful. All of you are and you just don't know what a comfort you are. Throughout the last 3 days, whenever I had the chance I would run to the porch because reading that you were praying and your loving comments comforts me. Thank you so much.

I am doing better today but am tired. I took Karen's oldest girl, Jill and her husband and baby shopping for clothes for the funeral. They didn't have anything to wear but jeans and T-shirts, and no money so I thought that was something I could do for Karen. I also had the privledge of picking out something for Karen to wear. I found the absolute perfect blouse and skirt. The blouse is white with some crocheted lace at the neckline and little silver seashells within the lace. Karen loved the seashore so it is perfect for her. I also bought a very sweet white skirt made of eyelit lace. The whole experience felt very healing and we actually ended up enjoying being together and even found ourselves laughing some great belly-laughs (very good medicine for grief!). So, I am feeling better but what is bothering me alot right now is the children. Zach called me twice today while we were shopping to tell me that he and Ali were just sitting at home because their dad was sleeping all day. I asked why he was sleeping and Zach told me because he stays on the computer all night. I felt so angry that those children were sitting home, basically alone the day after their mom died. It is very frustrating and painful to think of it but not sure how to deal with it at this point. I offered to pick them up and take them home but Zach is afraid to ask his dad...difficult situation and a long story.

Better go, the kids just got home from church and want to spend some time with mom. Love to you all,

Karen not only thought of her children during her final hour, but her telephone call proved she even thought of you. You had to have been very special to her. To Rev, is your throat feeling any better? If not, maybe you will have to lip-sync your upcoming concerts.

Well this cold weather layed some frost down and I lost all my garden. I had 2 rows of corn that was up to almost a foot tall...Gone! 4 more rows that was up 4 inches...Gone! Tomatoes...Gone! It's not to late to replant but I just don't know if I want to now. I'm pretty disgusted with it all. Oh well, glad it's just a hobby and not a livelyhood. That would be cause to be upset.

My sister is coming to pick up Sean and Erin so I can try to get some much-needed rest today. I have even been reading up on some vitamins I need to order so I am trying to take care of myself (I know, MDC, "oregano"! ha). Anyway, the funeral arrangements are made and visitation is set for tomorrow night so until then, I'll wait until I am asked to do something else. I am feeling better, much less emotional and feel stronger today. Today feels more like depression than sadness, strange.

I'm sorry for my long departure. I'm fine, thanks Me-They, just unbelievably busy. I swanee, I do not know where in the world this year has gone. The boys will be out of school tomorrow, Lord help me, and when did that happen? Anyway, between doctor visits (stomach and ankle), being a taxi driver, helping hubby w/work, and general domesticities I'm beat every night.
Boo- I am so unbelievably sorry about Karen. You are certainly being a good friend to her by helping her children. My prayers are for you and her family. Please take care of yourself so that you can take care of Karen's and your families.
Possum- We have had several mornings when the smoke is filling Atlanta. I think the smog keeps it here longer than necessary.

To Lucy, Victoria Day in Canada is celebrated in a similar fashion America celebrates the 4th of July ... with fireworks (both private and public displays) and outdoor picnics.

To Me-They, thanks for the welcome back. My leg wound is nearly completely healed. I'm about to change contractors on my current rehab project. I'm also researching properties for my next project. My girlfriend has an appointment with her cardiologist next week and I'm a little concerned about that because of some preliminary test results. So that's about it for me.

The late freezes we had this spring pretty much ruined the beautiful mums that have surrounded my porch for the last 10 years or so... Gone. I know how you feel. Boo, so sorry for your loss of Karen. Poor Horatio, I will pray for your girlfriend that she is ok. Yesterday Bruce's dr's office called and said that we have to come in tomorrow to discuss some lab results...hope it's just high cholesterol or something like that. He had a high blood sugar once about a year ago and they did the fasting one where they give you the sweet liquid to drink, etc. That test came back normal but he has gained weight in the past year so it concerns me. Our appointment is at 2pm. I will let you all know what transpires. We have to be at the church for Karen's visitation at 4 tomorrow. It's going to be a time squeeze.

Tonight, a wonderful sight, one of our does presented us with two twins. They are tiny, about the size of a cat….spotted and following their mother…She brought them up on the driveway when I was feeding. Not the twins were to feed on the corn, think the mother was introducing them to us. Gods’ wonders never cease to amaze me.

May 24, 2007 - Msg 52640: To Boo, allow me to relate what I did after my mother passed away. That same night, I stayed up until morning and typed a memorial document. In it, I included the favorite things she liked to do, her habits, her favorite foods, memories of some funny times, and other special tender moments we had. Every now and then I read that document. That helps me to keep my memories fresh as time passes. It helps me to honor her on her birth day and wedding day and ignore her anniversary of death. I want my memories to be pleasant. Consider something like this to help you through your grief.

Boo, there just are no words adequate to express my respect for you and what you did for Karen, and are doing for her family. What a sacrifice of time, and emotional investment you've shared with them. God will reward you, for sure. I'm praying that Bruce's visit with the doctor will be helpful and not too scary, and also that you will get some relief from the stress you're under so much of the time. Sometimes, it gets expensive to be a good friend.

Ray, what fun! There are few things on this earth any cuter, sweeter, or more innocent than a fawn, and your doe brought you two of them! Asa, I hope I'm wrong, but I am thinking Bruce might have type 2 diabetes. His brother developed it at about his age and Bruce has been gaining weight, and like I said, he had high blood sugar at his last check-up. His cholesterol is also elevated some, I'm sure. That is probably what this visit will be about. I don't think they did any other labs, maybe a PSA...not sure.

ASA: The only thing shaking is my leg, which is usally going nonstop. Drives the Mrs. crazy. But a few years ago I read something that said it actually burns calories so now when she mentions it to me I tell her I'm exercising.

homemaker, 3.59 a gallon?? Is that for regular or premium? Good grief! I just paid $2.95 for regular yesterday, and was whining about that. Of course, we shouldn't be surprised at higher prices right now - after all, it's summer, people are traveling more, and goodness knows the oil companies don't want to miss that opportunity to gouge a bit more out of us. How else can they show record profits? I have a Mary Poppins friend who insists that the oil companies are just trying to be good citizens and curb our oil consumption, conserve resources, etc. (gag) and all that, but that's so lame. I don't know a single person who has said, "Oh well, gas just went up another dime, guess we won't be going to Walley World this year." No, folks just tuck a loaf of bread and some peanut butter in the car, skip a few restaurant meals, and go anyway.

Boo, please keep us posted on Bruce's issues. If he is found to have Type II diabetes, please be very, very careful about letting them put him on the oral agents - big flap about Avandia right now. I took it for six months, didn't feel very well while on it. I'm certainly no expert, but my thinking is that since the body uses insulin to process sugar, then give it insulin. I know, Type II is more about insulin resistance, but I also know that since my doctor put me on insulin, I've felt fine and my blood sugars are in control. I do still make insulin, as proven by a C-peptide level, but when I take extra insulin, my sugar levels remain in the normal range, on average. Just make them explain and justify anything they want to put him on.

That's interesting, Ro. I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with type 2 and her internist wanted to put her on insulin right away. She refused and started changing her eating habits. She lost about 30 lbs and her sugars are normal for now but I thought it was interesting that her doctor, who is also a type 2 diabetic, is on an insulin pump and said that she believed all diabetics should be on insulin if they want to avoid the health problems caused by diabetes later in life. She told my friend that it is almost impossible for most people to continue to eat as well as they need to to keep their blood sugar at the right levels. We'll see if my friend can do it. Interesting. Is Avandia the new med that is out that is an injectable and is supposed to help diabetics to lose weight? My doc was talking to me about it recently and told me that she tried it on 5 of her patients to see how it would work for them and I think she said that 2 of the five couldn't take it because of the terrible nausea they had while taking it. I have been taking Glucophage for 6 years for my PCOS and haven't had any problem with it at this point. I'm not diabetic yet, though. I'm sure I have a whopping case of insulin resistance, though.

Better go get something done. We are having some freakish weather today. We seem to have had a little front. The wind is from the North and it's about 60 and rainy. It's supposed to rain all weekend, which is unfortunate considering tomorrow is Karen's funeral and graveside service. Seems like I've attended alot of rainy funerals.

My Mother's funeral was at night and we didn't know it was raining till we walked outside...it made me feel good!!! We just recently had a funeral for my Mother-in-Law and I was really surprised, actually shocked when we found out it cost almost as much to open/close the grave as it did for the funeral.

About gas prices, as one who commutes about 25 miles to work everyday (the Mrs. commutes 30 miles in the opposite direction three times a week), I feel your pain. We spend on average about $400 a month in gas. That's a huge chunk of our income.

Interestingly, though, I read that if you adjust the price of gasoline to correspond to average salaries, the relative price of gas is actually about half of what it was in 1950. That means, in real dollars it actually was more expensive to buy gas then it is now. Strange, but apparently true! Of course, that knowledge doesn't make it any easier on the pocketbook to fill the tank.

May 25, 2007 - Msg 52670: Hey, Boo. My diabetes is officially Type II, because of my age at onset and the fact that I do produce some insulin. My endocrinologist tried to keep me off insulin, but it just didn't work. Avandia is a pill, has been around for a while. It works primarily in the liver, as I understand it. Seems a lot of things work in the poor old liver, including all the statins. Anyway, it didn't work for me. Glucophage didn't do too well either. The new injectable you mentioned is probably Symlin. Primarily, it slows down the passage of food through the stomach and intestine, making the user feel full longer and slowing the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. It carries a side effect warning of possible nausea, and trust me, they mean it. I tried it and couldn't use it. After about six doses, I gave up. Nausea, felt uncomfortably full - just not a good experience. My doctor ordered it not for blood sugar control - I don't need that - but more to help me lose some weight. I would imagine it would have done that - who can eat when you're nauseated all the time?? Anyway, about Avandia, there's a big hooha about it right now, apparently it has come out that it dramatically increases the risk of heart attack.

About gas prices, I guess I'm lucky. My car gets about 17-18 in town, about 24-26 on the highway. Not wonderful, but not too bad. I work about two miles from home, and have learned to combine trips to some extent - grocery shopping in the morning on the way home, for example. My gasoline bill runs around $50 a month. Not bad, I guess. I do remember when gasoline was 15 cents a gallon back in the '50s, but then $400 a month was considered a very good wage back then, too. When I got my first job, in mid-1956, I believe I was making 1.35 an hour, if memory serves. All things are relative.

Well, the rain has stopped for now, FedEx just delivered the Beautyberry shrub I ordered, so guess I'll go shovel it into the ground. Should grow well with a couple of cloudy days to get established before the heat strikes again. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
May 25, 2007 - Msg 52671: I spend about $50.00/month also Romeena. If I could get myself in 'gear' in the mornings I could walk to work...takes about 12 to 15 minutes. I use to walk it but since I broke my arm I've been driving. Our utility rates are going up 50% starting next month so it's time to start conserving at home as well.
