Happy Mother's Day, Mothers! Glad to hear all the chit chat. Love the '70s music talk--my era. I had records of many of those songs mentioned including the Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever! ; ) , De§! I never think of myself as being old, but the other night I was trying to help my son with a research paper. I really didn't know for sure how you cite web sites as sources. (As an editor, I guess I should learn that.) I'm also amazed at how kids don't have to proofread nearly as close as we did because the computer catches all the capitalization and spelling errors. We used to have to mess with a typewriter, an eraser, and brush or white out and hope we could get the thing to realign when we tried to type the correction. What a pain! Kids have it much easier now! Had a good Mother's Day with my family and my Mom. Hope everyone else did too. Hope Millie is having a good day too. Sorry to hear about the Plum's troubles, Ro. We'll hope for the best.

Well hello porch family...Nice sweep Charlotte.
I pray you all had a great Mother's Day.
Asa...praying that your wife is feeling better.
Ro...sounds like you all had a good ole time together. That's great!
Mavis...so glad you are feeling better today.
Welcome back Frankie. Your rocker is still here.
Race fans.... Good race today. Those Hendrick boys are tuff this year.
MDC...you were asking how I come through the 70's and ended up doing what I do (I'll try not to turn this into a book)......Well after graduation I spent 4 years in the Navy. During that time I would entertain the guys on ship and in ports. I was singing country music during those years. After my 4 years I got out of the Navy and formed a band. Started singing in bars, clubs, fairs, festivals, etc.. It was during that time I was invited to become a member of the Country Music Association (CMA). I began to meet folks in the industry and they started booking me in different and bigger venues. I didn't have a relationship with God and all I was focussed on was becoming a "star". A promoter had me booked with BJ Thomas and while I was back stage after I had finished for the night, BJ was still on stage and he started singing Amazing Grace. Brother, the Lord just began to really deal with my heart as to what He wanted me to do with the talent that He had given me. I ran from that call for a over a year. But even though I ran, it was still on my heart. Then one night after singing on a show in Tennessee, I went back to the hotel and turned on the TV. A church was on singing songs to the Lord. Even though I had been in church pretty much all my life, that night I realized that those people I saw on TV had something that I didn't have...and that was Jesus. That night I got down on my knees in that hotel room and gave my life to Christ. I began studying and taking Bible courses through several Bible Colleges. But even during that I continued singing with my band. After another year and half, I called a meeting with my band and told them that I was leaving. Of course they thought I was crazy for "giving all this up". I accepted the call that God had placed on my heart and haven't looked back since. By the way...I found out that I was not "giving up" anything....I GAINED EVERYTHING. As a side note, all the guys and gals that were in my band are now serving the Lord. God is so good and I love Him so much!
It's that love that brings us Christians together. I close pretty much all my concerts each night with these words; "Remember Jesus loves you and so do I". And I really mean that.........to this porch also.
Well I've rambled on enough. Prayers for all the porch family.

My garden's looking good to Spot. First planting of corn is a couple of inches high now. Put a second planting in Saturday. Will do a third in two weeks and then maybe a 4th 2 weeks after that. That way it don't all come on at once. Got my maters planted Saturday as well. I guess it seems late to some folks but here in the mountains we don't plant tender stuff till after Mothers day as a rule of thumb. And even that is pushing it sometimes.
Nice sweep Charlotte Tucker. Not bad at all. Your feet must be awake. You even got in the corners. :)
Well if we are having lunch at Olive Garden I better hurry up and eat breakfast so I'll have room.

"Hey" to Frankie. I was just thinking about those paper flowers yesterday! When I was five, my family went to Six Flags over Texas and the only thing I remember about it these gigantic crepe paper flowers in a variety of colors that they were selling....odd that I should remember only that.
Romeena, as far as the "babysitting" episode is concerned, I think it's time for you to "let it go"....I believe you are getting a "compleeshion" complex, as Barn would say. You might want to try Bio-feedback....heehee
Yesterday was some busy Mother's Day! Sunday school and church, then serving up lunch for everyone (by the way, my enchiladas were VERY good, if I must say so myself), then after clean-up it was off to mom-in-law's until 9pm. Didn't get back home until 10pm.
Well, got to get Erin off to school...Thursday is her last day of school and they passed a law in Texas that schools couldn't start back up until after August 27th...soooo, I will have them home for over 3 whole months for summer break. It could get ugly....hehe

Good morning everyone. Yet another beautiful day here. We had a great weekend. I think the Mrs. enjoyed her Mother’s Day. I hope all you mothers out there did, too.
AUH2O: I guess you’re all done the early campaigning for Dennis Kucinich and your getting bored sitting around watching “The View,” huh? Well, it’s great to have you back on the porch. Welcome back!
BOO: Happy anniversary. We’ll have to get you something and inscribe “5” on it for you. Now, here’s my shorts (Mother’s Day was yesterday)…
ROMEENA: Continued prayers for Sugarplum. I watched that episode of TAGS last night and immediately thought of you! I remembered your ire from the last time it was on TV Land. It’s not one of my favorites, either.
CHARLOTTE: That’s great about the medicine working so well for your son. Scars? Them’s marks of character.
REV: Your testimony was nice, real nice.
LUCY: Great to hear from you. Stop back and fill us in when you have some time.
MILLIE: As always, you are in my prayers. How’s the family?
POSSUM: Sideburns! Huh! I bet my GI Joe could beat up your Dumb ole’ Ken doll. Of course, it wouldn’t really be a fair fight since Joe has bendable joints and the Kung Fu grip. And you know he’s tough because he’s the Joe with the scar across his face.
Well, I’m gonna Hong Kong Phooey offa the porch for now. Hey to the rest of you good porchsters (and even you ornery ones). I’ll stop back later.

Hey REV, I just had time to go back and read your testimony. It was such a blessing, thank you for sharing it with us. It is so true that when we come to the Lord, anything we give up can in no way compare to what we gain....like Jesus said, if you lose your life, you will gain it. I think yesterday was about the best Mother's Day I have had, personally. On the drive home late last night, I was just leaning my head back on the seat, resting. Sean was sleeping, and I could hear Erin singing softly behind me in her carseat. What she was singing caught my attention because it sounded like a prayer. She wasn't meaning for anyone to hear her and she was just talking to God. I heard her asking God to take care of the girls at the rehab where I teach bible study. She was telling God that they mean alot to her and to her mom and could he please help their parents to be nice to them and help the girls to share Him with their parents when they get home. It really surprised me because I don't really talk about it around her but she still understood that it was important to her mom. It really filled me with joy to know that because of Christ in my life, my children are seeing what it means to live out love and to care about others. I was so thankful to God for that gift on Mother's Day.
DES and Ro, I was reading in a magazine last night about a diner in San Antonio called The Tip Top. It has been in business since the 1930's. Looked like a neat old place and is known for it's big onion rings and mile-high pie. Either of you know of the place?

Well, I'm off to run and play with my best (human) friend - my DIL's mom. Now isn't that a blessing to be able to say that? To be co-mothers-in-law, and to be such good friends is just great. May 14, 2007 - Msg 52358:
Well, thanks, Ray. I still can't quite place it though - I moved from SA in 1973! What is a main cross road? Two miles inside 410 puts it quite a way into town, especially these days. When I was a teenager, living on Lockhill Road, I could and did ride my horse to the edge of town, to the Handy-Andy grocery store that soon became the anchor store for the Wonderland shopping mall, one of the very early malls in SA. When the Handy-Andy store was first built it was out in the middle of a huge field of sunflowers, with a small paved parking lot beside it. 410 didn't exist at that time. We had McMahan's convenience store on Fredbg Rd, on the point between where Huebner Road crossed, and Prue Road came in just beyond Huebner. However, if my grandma needed something from the store that McMahan's didn't carry, I got it for her from Handy Andy. That didn't happen often, as it was quite a distance, took a long time, and I got my driver's license when I was 14, so after that I went in the car. I suppose it was a bit dangerous too, crossing that highway on a shod horse. Of course, it was not the busy highway it is today.
Oh my, those were the days. Many times I've sat on that horse, on top of a caliche bluff, mountain laurel perfuming the air with the scent of grape candy, and my horse contentedly cropping the fresh spring ryegrass. There were several spots like that along or near the highway, and I'd sit up there and watch the traffic. Sometimes, if I wasn't using a saddle, I'd just lie back on his plump old rump and doze in the sun. I never fell off, don't know why. I'd love to go back and do that again - not a care in the world!
I suppose I had as near to an idyllic childhood as anyone could have. Loving Christian parents, poor as church mice, but I never really knew it. Fortunes improved dramatically when I was about 12, thanks to a business my parents got into, and we moved out to Lockhill when I was 13, I got my horse, and the good times continued. I really only lived out there about 5 years, but when I think of home, that's the place that comes to mind first. The day we moved in, I slipped into the life like a hand into a glove, and just loved it. I wish I could go back.
Well, sorry for that trip down memory lane. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Ro, the 'De Wese's Tip Top Cafe' is on the corner of Fredericksburg and Santa Anna and on the east side of the street. It opened in 1936 and is still owned by the De Wese family. Two of the daughters still work there and would make us feel like youngsters in comparison. and, they don't take credit card or bank cards...only cash!
For memories of San Antonio restuarants most were on Broadway. Christie's for sea food, Valario's and Naples for Italian, Youngblood's for chicken, The Frontier Burger! and La Louisian if you wanted to splurge. The first Pig Stand was on Broadway and just went under a month or so ago. It was down there close to Weber's (black cow) and Princes Hambergers. Can't recall any Mexican food on Broadway. We went to church on Grayson street (St. Paul) so Sunday lunch was right there. Butter Crust bakery is even gone now. It was even the automobile row street and don't believe many of them are still there.
I grew up in San Antonio but moved to the Austin area (Round Rock) in 1962. That was when Round Rock was a sleepy little town of about 1,700 population and had only one traffic light. Times do change! Returned back here in 1997 and think more changes here in the last tne years than while gone.
Boo, De? or everone else, if you plan to be here for the Tip Top, please let me know and I will meet you and you will be my guest....no kidding!
For me, it is so disappointing to travel and look for a place to eat and all you can find are Chili's, TGIF Fridays, Black Eyed Pea etc. Anyone traveling I-10 west, stop in Junction, Isaack's Restaurant in Junction on the US290 cut off (center of town). Relax after a meal and check out their stores....I love Junction.
Got wound up on that one, now don't ask me about organic gardening or compost tea!

Click on the radar map and scroll in, by using the drag can come right down on the house. They are using MS Virtual Earth pictures. If you have MS Streets & Trips you can use Virtual Earth even in 3D. Works for any area.

Wow. Another jolt. I went to Google Earth, and pulled up a satellite picture of the old homestead. Of course, the closer you move in, the more resolution is lost, so up close it's not too clear, but from far back, most of the old landmarks are there. We had a tennis court, and it appears to be gone, but the outbuildings are still there, I think. Lots of tree cover, so it's hard to tell, but I think the stable and tack room and feed room are there. There were six acres, in a square parcel of land. The house sat toward one end, so when my dad sold it, he kept half of the land, about three acres. Later he sold that, and now I see there's a house, with a swimming pool, on that section. The last time I actually saw the house, during a visit to SA, I was appalled at how the new owners had really just ruined it. They did a remodel job on it, and it looks like some kid did it with Legos, just a big old box. It's awful. It was a beautiful, graceful, charming place when my parents owned it, with tasteful landscaping and everything well-maintained. Now it's a blocky horror, most of the shrubbery was either dying or had been pulled out, and it was just heartbreaking. I never wanted to drive by again. Some people's taste is all in their mouth.

I just checked out the Virtual Earth view of my own house. It's not quite as close-up as the Google Earth, but is sharper, much better resolution, and waaay more recent. It appears to have been taken this past winter, judging by the leafless trees. My pond, which was built last year, is present, and is not present in the Google Earth shots. The red pickup parked in front of my neighbor's house in the Google Earth shot is from at least three years ago. Those people don't even live there anymore. So - Google Earth gets closer, but with poor resolution on closeup, and the pictures are old. Virtual Earth gets almost as close, has much better resolution, and is more recent. Hmmm. Good morning, everyone! Who has a cool house where I can come and spend the day? And bring the Plum? My house is hot and getting hotter. We had a storm yesterday evening, knocked the power out for about an hour, and apparently took my a/c with it. The blower is running, so I didn't realize it last night while it was fairly cool outside, but as it's heating up today, it has become abundantly clear that something is wrong. I went out to check the compressor, and it's not running. I reset the breaker, and that didn't help. So, I called the man, who happens to be my DIL's dad. He's in an attic on a big job right now, but will come as soon as he can. I hope it's soon, because it's HOT in here! I have to go to work tonight, and sure don't want to leave little Plum in this hot house.
Boy, how spoiled am I? I had never even heard of a/c until I was about thirteen. When we moved to the country, the house didn't have it, but window units were all the rage, and my dad got two of them and installed them in that house. Oh, how wonderful! Big old Freidrich units, and they were very effective. My mom kept throws and lap blankets all over the living room for guests, because my father was part polar bear. He really enjoyed that a/c.
Beautiful poem, Tom. Thank you! You always have the appropriate word to say.
Well, have a great day, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Wow, it is cold today(sorry Romeena;)). Yesterday we were sweltering in the upper 80's and maybe even 90's, and today we would be lucky if it were up to the 60's. I never know what to dress Kai in.
Just bought a new car yesterday. Can't afford it, but once the wife gets a bee in her bonnet about something, you better see it through or you might get stung.
I just made that up. Can you tell? ;)
Hope everyone is well today.

Actually, we bought it from a dealer. ...CAR dealer; not the other kind.
Anyway, it's a Chevy Aveo Sedan. We were going for the hatchback, but that crafty salesman steered us to the higher priced model, of course. It's a pretty nice little car. And it drives alot smoother than our Saturn, that's for sure.
The only thing is we can't figure out how to work the electric windows, they're very different from the ones we had in the saturn. This one has these large, weird, sorta Z-shaped buttons jutting out of the door below the windows, but when we press them, nothing happens.;)

Good evening everyone....hope all of you had a great day. Mine went very well till I got a blister on one foot...new shoes, oh well fashion does have a price. Just remembered something the EMT said when I fell and broke my arm...she said "you shouldn't have been wearing those girlie shoes". She was right I got my high heel caught in the cuff of my slacks and tripped myself. I wouldn't let her cut my jacket sleeve off either...I had my husband take my jacket off, very carefully. It's a great jacket! I did however get rid of the slacks I was wearing!!! I kept the shoes..HAHAHA! Asa I'm from the other state on the East coast that begins with an "M". By the way Asa does the "other" board still exist?

Sorry DES, I got it wrong...my memory is not so good these day. Ray got it right.
What a night. I went to the rehab to lead the bible study and they had changed all the patient rooms so I had a whole knew class with girls that I didn't know and the average age was 14. I even had a 13 year old. Let me tell you, these girls were hurting. They were asking me questions about how God could let them go through all they had been through. One girl was angry with God because of the mess her life was. When she was 3, her mom was engaged to marry a man and he decided he didn't want a woman who had a 3 year old so he left her. That night the woman killed herself and now the girl blames herself. Another 14 year old broke down and cried and told us that when she was 9 her drug addicted mother took some kind of medication and told the child to wake her up in 2 hours. Well, the child fell asleep 20 minutes before she was to wake up her mother and when she woke up, she turned her mom over and mom was dead. She said she just sat with her dead mother for 4 hours until someone came. This poor child still thinks it is her fault that her mother is dead. She told me that she took her first drug the night her mother died because her mom was everything to her and she couldn't stand the pain. She has been self-medicating with drugs for 5 years now to stop the pain. I tried to comfort her and prayed, but what do you say to a child like this who is in such pain and is asking "why"? It's so hard.
I think I will go to bed. I need some down time after that.

Romeena, did you get your a/c fixed? How's the Plum doing?
Frankie, a high price for fashion indeed. So it is you. I was wondering where you got off too. I'm sorry, I thought it was Maine you were from. Hope your arm heals fast. I took a spill myself last summer. Smacked my head hard on a concrete pool deck and done got myself a head injury. Still dealing with occasional dizziness but mostly recovered. The other board is around, but barely. I'll have to find you the address cause it was moved.
Rev, does this mean you're buying breakfast? I hope your wallet is full cause my stomach is empty.
Good to see you ky girl. Don't be so busy.
Well I better get to IHOP. I hate to be late for these events.

Good Morning Porch! Sorry I haven't been around in a few days, been fighting those dad-burn migraines again. I thought they were gone, it has been so long since I had one. I tell you, I thought I was a goner Sat & then again last night another one hit pretty hard. I feel much better today, but really tired from them. They always wear me out. Robert has been wonderful taking care of me, I don't know how I got so lucky to find this man, but I have no plans of letting him go, that is for sure. I thank the Good Lord for sending him to me when I needed him the most.
One more thing, can I ask for more prayers for myself? Between the migraines, or better yet, the cause of them probably, my sister is at it again & if you all could pray for me to have the strength to get through what I need to do I would really appreciate it. I don't know how much more of her I can handle and still be a decent human being! Thanks in advance & prayers as always from here for my porch family. Gotta get to work.

Good morning, all. Just got home from work, had a bit of breakfast, and now about to turn in and sleep a while so I can go back to work tonight. The house is warm, but not too bad. A cool spell blew through here last night, so the temperature is in the 70s. With the ceiling fans going, it's really okay. Of course, it's warmer in the house than it is outside, because of radiant energy.
The bad news is, my a/c compressor is fried. I guess lightning hit it, or at least a big power surge, because it's a goner. I know when it happened - around 5 pm on Monday night. I heard the big BAM when it hit - nearly jolted me out of my chair - but didn't realize what it had done. Anyway, I'm looking at about $2500 for the five-ton unit this house requires. Oh well, it's only money! (heehee)
Mavis, have you considered getting a restraining order, to prevent your sister from contacting you? Maybe the situation isn't such that a restraining order would be appropriate, but you sure don't need her yammering at you. I just don't know what makes some folks so mean.
Well, I'd better get to bed. I'm down to about five hours remaining now before I'll have to get up. That's pretty much minimum for me, to get through a 12-hr shift, when I've been up all night the night before.

Hey everyone, it's raining cats and dogs here this afternoon...glad I'm inside! Mavis you are in my prayers, hang in things will improve. Sterling...I had to laugh when I read your post about your car windows. I have a new vehicle and I noticed this little light on my instrument panel....had no idea what it was, it was on for a couple of days, looked like it had tire treads at the bottom, I walked around and checked the tires and they were fine....the next morning I checked them again and sure enough one tire was half flat. I made it to the gas station and got it fixed. While I was waiting I got out the Manual and sure enough it was an indication of a tire going flat. A few days later I stopped for coffee and when I got in the vehicle I couldn't get the key to work, it wouldn't turn on. I kept trying and nothing, I was determined I wasn't going to call my husband to rescue me so I got out the manual again and found what the problem was...I had turned the steering wheel when I got out and it locked. One turn of the wheel and I was back in business. This was during the time I had my arm in the sling and a chest wrap and was driving with one hand!!!
