Lucy, no offence taken here. I didn't know there were more than one Asa. :)
It's supposed to be a nice warm sunny week here, all week long. That means it will be snowing before the day ends. The weathermen here can't predict worth a hill of beans. They say it's because the mountains makes the weather change to much. Ha! I just have to wonder why I keep listening to them. Excuse my crudness but I have said for years they can't even predict their own bowel movement! (sorry, I'm on a rant this morning)
Hope you all have a blessed day and keep a good thought. And as I always tell my kids, remember who you are and what you stand for.

Good Morning,
I had a row with the boys. Just because its spring break they think their entire lives break. Bryan's birthday is tomorrow and all he wants is a clean house. I told Nick he has to clean their bathroom and Bry has to clean their bedroom spotless. That's it! Then, they need to write thank you notes from their birthday's 3 weeks ago. From me telling them these 2 things to do they were both crying saying their day is ruined. It took all I had not to take my wooden spoon and beat their heinies! Asa, I needed to rant too!
Have a blessed day!

Hey Porch
Asa- Are you ever so right about the "weatherman." We do have a little bit of snow left but they (and we know who they are) are calling for some more Thursday through Sunday, nothing like what's falling out in your area. Did you get hit by that stuff.
Millie-Ya know, I'm not even sure what to say. I'm praying for you and thinking about ya.
Spot-Thanks for the chow.
Lucy-Hang in there. I really think the boys will appreciate your efforts someday.
It has been a bit of a rough stretch for some of us here on the Porch, prayers for all. And, God Bless the Plum.
I'm truly not trying to start a moulage here but how is it possible that anyone can care what Rosie O'Donnell has to say?

Asa, the weather here is humid but warm. I enjoyed my drive to Houston yesterday because everything was a beautiful, verdant green from all the rain we had. So many wildflowers, too. I wish I had taken my camera with me. I saw so many beautiful pastures full of wildflowers, horses, old windmills, ponds...just wonderful. It won't last forever, though. Once summer comes, that blasted heat will kill most of it.
Hang in there Lucy....parenting isn't for cowards, is it?
Well, have to go take our Lab to the vet. I noticed this morning that one of her eyes is very swollen, blood-red and draining! Looks very painful so I'm taking her in...talk to you all later.

Asa- I almost forgot to mention something to you. I was listening to talk radio over the weekend when one of announcers had made the statement that, if it wasn't for NYC, New York State would be Utah. I think he meant it as a slight to Western New York and Utah, I think. They were discussing viability of the Bills staying in Buffalo (which I couldn't care less about). Can you believe the arrogance of some people? I bet his parents were meteorologist's.
Asa- Hey ya know, I just got an idea here. How about we send New York City to you folks and then if it sucks life out of the rest of Utah then we'll now if that clown was right.

Good morning everyone. Sorry about the snow; it’s 75 and beautiful here today—not that I’m rubbing it in or anything ;).
MILLIE: Like AUH2O, I just don’t know what to say other than you are in my prayers. Prayers for Sugarplum and the rest of you, too.
AUH2O: Not wanting to start a moulage? You’ll get none here. I agree with you completely. About the NYC comment, look at it this way, without the city you might have the most attractive state in the Union in which to live.
LUCY: The Mrs. sleep and work schedule hasn’t really gotten any better, thanks for asking. She’s actively job searching now, looking for something she can do from home. Right now, she’s applying at case management companies who deal with medicare, disability, etc. Hopefully, something will break soon (before she does).

Ugh! So much to do today. One of my brothers from California and his family are coming for a visit this weekend so cleaning, shopping for dinner on Sunday, etc... This place really needs a good spring-cleaning. Everything has dust on it.
The vet gave me some drops for the dog's eye and said the eye itself looks ok but lots of swelling of the tissues around it...in other words, probably just got something in it. Looks awful, though.
I love Napolean Dynamite. I absolutely "got it". From the cheezy music to the awful clothes, I thought it was great and very funny. That Uncle Ricco was such a jerk and Kip was hilarious. I can't imagine what could be so bad about it, seemed really mild for a movie made these days. Napolean: "Kip, can you bring me my chapstick?"....
Better quit stalling and get something done. Would dearly love to lay on the couch all day, though...I'm still tired from yesterday and Erin was up late with a cough!...

I've got the homemade ice cream and lemonade! Boy my arms tired from all that crankin'.
Thanks y'all for your comments. The boys did get their chores done. Hubby told me to make a chart of daily and weekly chores for them so there won't be any surprises. He said he will make sure they are followed to a T and I won't have to deal. I agree with the chart, but let's face it, he travels a great deal and I'll be the one to deal with their "resistance" (ie crying, whining, tantrums, and spoiled brattiness). But, we'll give it a shot. He was saying that they've been spoiled for so long that we have to bend the branch back. Oh well, it's my own doing for Bryson's laziness. Now, we just have to keep on working.
Y'all have a good evening. Rosie Who? Nobody by that name exists in my vocabulary.

Good afternoon, all. No cancellations at the surgery center yet, looks like it will be Friday for the Plum. Sure wish we could get her in sooner, but God is driving this train. Maybe there's a reason why Friday would be best. Thanks for all your prayers and concern. It's truly encouraging.
For all of you who are dealing with kids and their myriad problems right now, here's a little laugh. My daughter-in-law has a little sign on her fridge that reads: "Raising children is like being pecked to death by a chicken." Oh, how true! Think about it.
Yep, Spot, I'll be at work tonight. Sounds like you're off - good for you.
Me-They, if your wife finds a good home-based solution, I'd like to know about it. There's nothing I would like better than to work from right where I'm sitting now - at this keyboard by this window. Sure would be nice.
Lucy, I think your husband has a great idea, and I hope you'll take it to the limit. Make that chart, post it on the fridge, and tell the kids in his presence that since they can read, it will not be necessary for you to discuss it with them. Then don't. No reminders, no urging, no problem. The crying, whining, tantrums and brattiness will not occur, because you will not be involved. Just stand back, smile and keep your mouth shut, other than to praise them when they do something right. When your husband returns home, he'll know if they did their jobs or not. If not, let him deal with it. If they did, he can reinforce the praise you have already given. Don't fall in the trap of becoming their adversary, or their taskmaster. If somebody's job is to do the dishes, and he doesn't, leave them in the sink. If you run out of dishes, use paper plates. If somebody is supposed to dust and doesn't, leave it. If it gets deep enough, plant potatoes! Just don't engage, no matter how badly you're provoked. It takes two to make a fight.
Well, I've got to get ready for work. Just get this shift behind me, and I can concentrate on the Plum. Boo, I hope your dog's eye gets better. Poor little babies, if they could only tell us when something is bothering them, we could catch things a lot earlier. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Good morning, all. Home from work, the Plum seems fine, and I'm pooped. Ready for a nap. Yes, Me-They, I'm very serious about that working from home thing. I'd love to just check out of the hospital game. I've done it for 28 years, and I'm tired. I hate having to get up and leave home at 6:30 in the evening, to be gone all night. I hate having to go in on a day off to sit through some inane meeting, concerning things about which I don't give a little mouse's backside. You know the stuff I mean - some clipboard carrier's big idea that's going to revolutionize the way we deliver patient care, and which will be totally forgotten before the print shop finally gets the "necessary" forms delivered. I love my hospital. They've been very good to me over the years, else I wouldn't have worked there for 28 years. I'm just tired of working away from home, period.
I don't want to get involved in anything that requires investment in an inventory, or sales or such as that. I've been there and done that, many years ago, got enough that, too. I just want to sit here at this keyboard and get paid for it!
Lucy, somehow I missed your message 50948 back when you wrote it. My comments were based on what Bryan said about writing out the chart of chores and such. If I had read 50948 before then, I might have had different comments to make. I don't know how you kept from pounding knobs on the heads of both of those boys. Of all the outrageous, manipulative - yes, bratty - behavior, that takes the cake. I would probably have just lost it and taken a strap to both of them. As my husband would have said, "If you're going to cry, you might as well have something to cry about. Right now, you don't, but you're about to!" Crying, and accusing you of "ruining" their day because you asked them to clean their room? Puh-leeze! So, who are you? Fifi, the upstairs maid? Who do they think does it if they don't? Kids! Honestly! Those kids are riding a gravy train with biscuit wheels, and it's time somebody derailed it. I hope it's you.
Now, having had my "rant", my advice still stands, in my opinion. Do not engage! Say your piece, state the rules of the game, and withdraw. Then stick to it. I may be totally wrong, but I don't hear much to make me think Bryan supports you every time when it comes to the kids. If that's the case, then it's even more important that you just pull out of the battle. Let him make the chore chart, you tell him and the kids that you will not be the enforcer, and then stick with it. Let Bryan come home to a stack of un-done chores and a relentlessly cheerful wife, and he'll get the idea. If he really is supportive and will be firm with the boys, well, that's all the better. Stand back and let him take the heat and give some of his own. You don't need to be the one, not with two big boys.
Millie, I'm still praying for you. Hang in there. Idelle, it's so good to have you back. I hope you'll make it a habit.

Are any of those work-from-home jobs for regular people, or do you have to be a nurse? I've seen alot of work-at-home things, but just figured they must be scams. But I'd love to be able to work off my keyboard. Especially since, even though I have had some interviews that seem to go very well, I still don't have a job yet. No, I haven't tried McDonald's yet, and it may get to that point, but I am still hoping for something else.
Went to Kai's school last night for parent/teacher conferences, and as usual the teacher had only good things to say. I knew that Kai was doing well, but the teacher says Kai is reading at a 2nd grade level. Not bad for a Kindergartener. Yet I still worry about putting too much on her, because I want her to enjoy being a kid. I mean, she is only a kindergartener. She has her whole life to grow up.:)
I also worry about a sheet they gave us as we walked out the door last night, which talked about their 'Human Growth And Development' curriculum they plan on teaching. Anything that states that you have a right to examine the materials or exclude your child from those lessons, the red flags start going up for me, and make me wonder what exactly they want to teach little kindergarteners that might cause a parent to want to exclude them from it in the first place. I guess I'll never know until I ask. But just wondered if any of you parents with kids in higher grades ever came across this kind of thing when your kids were in Kindergarten. My Mom thinks I have nothing to worry about, that they are not going to do anything real in-depth or controversial in lower grades like that, but I think you never know nowadays.
Ugh. It is hard bringing up a kid(right) in these times we live in.
Speaking of the school, they just called and said Kai fell off of a swing, and cut her lip and got a bloody nose. They said she is alright; she was just a little upset about the blood of course, but otherwise she is ok so they sent her back to class. She only has a half-day today anyway, but that didn't stop me from wanting to run over there and get her. :)
Love the Napoleon quotes!

I know what you mean about pushing your daughter. Ours is doing quite well in school (straight A's he says with a puffed out chest), but we try very hard not to fall into the "you are so smart" trap. I remember when I was a kid I did very well in school, and my parents often bragged on how well I did. I also remember what it did to me--just about made me a neurotic mess trying to always maintain perfection to please my parents. Now, I make sure that my daughter knows I am proud of her for her effort. In fact we tell her that grades are much less important than her effort. Our motto had become as long as you do your best and behave yourself ("act like somebody") we're happy and that's all we ask.

Afternoon all. Thunderstorms rolling through on my end of the porch. Should be cooler for the weekend. I'll take all the cool weather I can get before the heat sets in for the summer.
Hope Kai is okay. Kids just brush themselves off and go on! Real troopers! Sterling, I would definitely keep a close watch on everything that goes on at school. You can't be too careful!
Romeena, hope you can find a work at home job! That would be great. Hugs for the Plum!
M-T, I don't go so much by the book... as by the heart!!

Hey, MDC, glad you could stop by and wish you could stay longer. You are always an encouragement.
It's nice and cool here in South Texas today (68 degrees right now).
Poor Kai, hope she is feeling better. Give her an extra hug for me, Sterling. I understand why you might be concerned about the note from the school...you just never know these days. So far, we haven't had to deal with it in Erin's Kinder class...we have other issues, though, as I have talked about. The other day she got in the car after school and was excited about getting a B-! I think she is just a bit too young, really. Hopefully the new school she will be in next year will be better for her. I always tell my children that it's not the grades that matter as much as the effort and the learning and none of us are great at everything, are we? I can relate to what you said, Me-They, because I was a bright kid and started out making A's in first and second grade...nothing from anybody except positive affirmation. When I got to 3rd grade, I had an elderly teacher who couldn't seem to understand that some kids have a problem with long division. She made me sit at the "dumb" table in the front of the room with a couple of the others poor kids who couldn't seem to conquer the math. That was the beginning of my hatred of math! haha...and also took a huge chunk out of my self-esteem.
Right, Miss Peggy....by the heart!
SPOT, fried bologna sandwiches?....that is so unhealthy it almost sounds naughty. Will you be making those with MIRACLE WHIP??

April 04, 2007 - Msg 50995:
...let me clarify what I said above about Erin being excited about a B-...I am very proud of her for even the D's because I know she is trying and making and is learning. I just think it's sad that she has to be excited over a B- because she rarely gets an A and she sees her other, older classmates getting A's....better go check the soup...

Well, Erin just woke up from a nap and she is sick again. Has a temp of 102.2 and coughing like crazy. I sent her back to school on Monday and yesterday she came home very tired and slept all evening. I could tell she didn't feel well this afternoon and she has been sleeping for the last 3 hours. I guess I'll call the doctor tomorrow. May she has some infection. Please send up a prayer for her. Thanks,
Boo
April 04, 2007 - Msg 50998:
Afternoon, porch! Sterling, it's great that Kai is a good reader. The question is, does she enjoy it? If so, then cease worrying about putting too much on her. If she likes to read, she'll enjoy being a kid even more, because she'll have time to do something she enjoys, and conversely, will have something she enjoys doing, to fill her time. It works both ways. Some of my happiest memories are of the years from about 8 to 12. No responsibilities to speak of, and stacks of books provided by my thoughtful parents. I would read for hours - sitting up in a natural cradle in a pecan tree, or on a blanket on the grass with my dog, or in bed under the covers, reading by flashlight when I was supposed to be asleep! Books were my friends, and a kid who reads a lot will never be lonely or bored. I traveled all over the world, and through time as well, in my books. Like Boo, I was never too great at math, but boy, did I love to read, and still do.
The surgery center called, and the Plum will be going in tomorrow morning, instead of Friday. I have to have her there by 7:30, but don't know what time the surgery will be done. Prayers are still much appreciated.

FOR MY FRIEND MILLIE
Dear Lord,
You know my friend so much better than I do.
You know her sickness and her needs. You also know her heart.
Lord, I ask you to be with my friend now.
If there is a sin that needs to be confessed and forgiven, Lord, please help her to see her need and confess.
Lord, I pray for my friend because Your Word says I should pray for her healing.
I believe You hear this earnest prayer from my heart and that it is powerful because of Your promise.
I have faith in You to heal my friend, but I also trust in the plan you have for my friend's life.
Lord, I don't always understand Your ways, and why my friend has to suffer, but I trust You now.
May You be glorified in my friend's life and also in mine.
from Poor Horatio

Today was Bryan's birthday so we went to the Japanese Steakhouse for dinner. It was okay. I'm not really big on sushi or anything like that plus I'm a vegetarian (not by choice, bacon, yum). Anyhow, Bryan and the boys had fun and loved their meals.
Well, I'll check in with y'all tomorrow. Good luck Plum! Good luck Millie! Y'all are in our prayers.
Blessings,

Prayers for Sugarplum and Romeena, also. The testing of our faith is difficult but if we continue to trust in Him, he will use it all for our good. Praise be to God.
Goodnight, REV and everyone. May tomorrow be an even better day.

Morning dears. Hope all are well.
Prayers for Sugarplum as she has her surgery this morning that she will recover fast and that it has not spread.
Likewise for Millie, that she will heal. I offer an Amen to the beautiful prayer offered by P.H. in her behalf.
Lucy, are you really a vegetarian? What do you mean Not by choice"? Just curious, don't want to pry.
Boo, I hope Erin is feeling better today. Poor thing. That's a high temp.
Hazel, did you get the garden tilled up yet? Mine is ready to plant but I'm waiting till the nights warm up some.

I love that Napolean quote, DES. Here's another one, let's see if you remember it: Grandma: "Naploelan, make yourself a dang case-a-DILL-uh (quesadilla)!"
Hope Lace feels better soon, Possum. I'm taking Erin to the doc this morning. The cough is terrible and I am wondering if she might be getting an ear infection, too. I'm trying hard to get her well by Easter...and with company coming from out of town! I kind of hope they forget to unplug the coffee pot (like Uncle Ollie!). Just kidding (well, sort of).

Hey Porch
It's been hit and miss for me lately, mostly miss. But, I been thinking of you folks. When it started snowing here last night I thought I better let Asa know about this. About five inches last night and I guess we're in line for about 4 inches more today. That puts the cabbash on yard work again. We had 11 trees cut done in the yard last year to let a little more light in. We just got the last of the stumps ground down before the snow started to fall.
Asa-I think you might have it a bit wrong about spots breakfast, I think it's more like, "Well, hello there waistline!" haha!! Keep it up spot.
DES-My wife just hates that movie.
DES-Your friend Michael's situation does sadden me and I've prayed for him and all of us here. I know this will not be a news flash for anyone but after prayer I am just filled with hope for him. I feel that same hope for Millie and the rest of us in need.
PH- Well done, and Amen! I hope that is what the Lord hears when I pray.
possum-I'm thinking of the Plum and Romeena today also. I bet we all are. Yes, it was good news about those British sailors.
Boo & possum-Hope the kids are up and at 'em soon.
God Bless the troops!

Good morning everyone. Prayers for all of you porchsters this morning, and Erin and Laci, too. Well said, HORATIO. You're mighty wise for half a boy.
BOO: Another reason I don't agonize over Nora's grades is that I have known so many successful people who didn't do so well in school. And, in the final measure, there's only one subject in which we'd better make sure we do well. I'm sure you are teaching that to Erin every day and she's doing fine.
AUH2O: Yes, very good news about the sailors. But what did you expect since everybody knows it was just a clever hoax, anyway ;).
Well everyone, that's it from me until Monday. I'm off this afternoon to spend some time with the family, then its off to Holy Thursday services tonight. I pray you all have a blessed Easter. It is such a special time of year to celebrate that our Lord is not dead but alive and with us today.

auh2o, thanks so much for your prayers too. It means a lot.
More great ND quotes, Boo and auh2o!
I always thought I didn't like mayonnaise, because when I was growing up all my parents bought was Miracle Whip. I just didn't care for the stuff. As is frequently the case, certain items fall under the umbrella of a generic term; i.e., tissues are Kleenex, any soda is a Coke, and Miracle Whip was "mayonnaise!"

Good afternoon, all. Haven't meant to be holding back, just haven't gotten to the computer until now. The Plum did very well. Her surgery started at 11:30, ended at 1:00. I got to see her briefly before they woke her up. I made sure to leave before they did that, didn't want her to be trying to go with me. She looks pitiful, but I expected that. Bad haircut, of course, with a little shaved pink belly. Huge incision, and now her little belly is all flat and shrunken. They said the spleen was enormous, had her belly packed full. It was removed intact, and a small node between her stomach and her liver was also removed. I'd prefer that there had been no other nodes, but at least they removed it. We won't know until probably Monday whether it's malignant. Please keep praying. I know with all the people who need prayer right now, your prayer lists are full - I know mine is - but please find room for my little Plum. I may get to bring her home as early as tomorrow afternoon. I hope so.
Boo, without intending to start a moulage, may I recommend that you rub the soles of Erin's feet with Vicks tonight, then put socks on her? I've heard from several sources that this procedure stops a cough in its tracks, and lets the person get some sleep. I've not done this myself, but I intend to next time a cough is bothering me. It's worth a try.
Well, I'm tired and hungry, didn't sleep well last night and haven't eaten all day. Guess I'll have a little dinner, and then maybe early to bed.
De§, prayers for Michael. I know you're concerned, and understandably so. I'm so sorry that he's going to have financial problems to compound the rest of his troubles.
Spot, that dinner menu is a bit corny, don't you think? (heehee)

FOR MY FRIEND ROMEENA:
Heavenly Father, the bond we have with our animal friends is a wonderful and special gift from You. We now ask You to grant Sugarplum your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering. Give Romeena a new understanding of her responsibilities to her cherished pet. Take our heartfelt prayers and bless Sugarplum with healing light and strength. Your goodness is turned upon every living thing. Your grace flows to all Your creatures. Your Light touches each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant long and healthy lives to our special animal companions. Bless their relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Empower him to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in honoring You forever.

Amen.
