March 27, 2007 - Msg 50783: Good morning, folks. I'd love to jump into the moulage again, but I have much more important things on my mind this morning. The Plum is ailing. She started limping last night, favoring her right back leg. I thought she might have pulled a muscle when jumping up on the sofa, so we just went to bed a little early and I thought she'd probably be better this morning. She's not. In fact, she seems a bit worse. I called the vet, and he suggested half a baby aspirin, to see if that helps - could just be a touch of arthritis. She is twelve, after all. An hour or so after I gave her the aspirin, she was limping through the room when her little back end just sort of collapsed and she sat down on her left hip. She got right up, and walked on, still limping, but that scared me. Something is going on, so we have an appointment for 3 p.m. If you have any furkid prayers, please employ them on her behalf. Thanks. --Romeena

Finally made it to the porch for a short visit.
I have been "buisier than a one armed octipus with the hives"(my favorite quote from "The Incredible MR Limpet) getting ready for my daughte and her girlfriend to arrive from California-a week from today.
Been doing the spring cleaning thing and some re-decorating--new curtins and such.
Planning meals too--it will be nice to have people to cook for again--I am dragging out all my girl's childhood favorites and a few new things too.
Hope every one is doing well.

Romeena, please let us know about the Plum as soon as you can. Could she have partially dislocated a leg like my mom's Sugar does from time to time? I'm praying it's something easily treatable.

Maude, that was a mighty tasty lunch. Now what's for dinner? I hope it's not a TV dinner!

March 27, 2007 - Msg 50789: Hi, all.. Just got back from Dr. Mike's office with the Plum. X-rays showed a mild hip dysplasia, probably age related. That's not a problem, we just need to try to avoid jumping off of things, and the like. However, he felt a hard mass in her belly, which he can't explain. The X-Ray didn't define it clearly enough, and palpation was inconclusive as well. Due to her sore hips and inability to squat, she hasn't pooped since yesterday (sorry, if anyone is squeamish) so it's possible that what he felt and saw was just that - poop. He gave her some medication for her painful hip and legs, and she already is more mobile. He wants to see her again on Thursday, by which time she will presumably have emptied her bowel. If the mass is gone, we can conclude it was nothing but a full colon. If it's still there, we may be in deep trouble. The next step then would be an ultrasound, and probably exploratory surgery. He's reluctant to do surgery because she's 12 years old, but will if necessary. Keep praying, folks. You all know how much this little creature means to me. --Romeena

So sorry Sugarplum is having a hard time. Prayers on the way for her, and for you Ro. We understand. Thanks for letting us know so we could pray.

I have not mentioned yet that we are having to make some decisions about the kid's school for next year. They are changing curriculum for the upper grades (and that will include Sean) and they will be using the ABEKA. I know Sean won't be able to do it. The administrator admitted at a parent-teacher meeting that it is going to be really rough on the students. Sean is at his limit right now and barely getting by so I just can't keep him there. Today I went to a smaller christian school that is still using the same curriculum that Sean is doing now and I am going to apply there for next year but don't know yet if they will have openings for both kids...praying about it.

Well, today has been a really busy day and I am exhausted...guess I will say goodnight!

Hope you can get your blood pressure under control. Hope the two are not related. (hee hee hee)
I wish I would have gotten my E-Bullet before I went to California. I was reading last night that Karen Knotts (Don's daughter) was doing a show about growing up as his daughter in a theater in North Hollywood. I would have gone and watched that had I knowed about it when I was there. Oh well, just like Jimmy, I best not try to do everything the first time I go to town.

Prayers for Plum

Asa....it's in the 80's here in SC.... No snow here.

Boo...prayers that you are able to get into the school that is best for the kids.

Well I better get out of here. Since I am home this week, I got a call to sing for a funeral. It's kinda special....this man was a drunk that could not stand anything that was Christian including the church. He even tried to keep his wife away from church. But he loved country music. His wife had bought some of my cds at a concert and he hid them from her. But one day he was in his truck and "happened" to pick up my cd and put it in the player. To make a longer story shorter, he liked the sound (not the words) so he contiuned to listen. After a while the Words began to touch his heart and got saved. So the family asked if I would sing his favorite song off my cd. I'm just thankful I was home this week. For the last two years, he and his wife would travel to other states to attend my concerts. It's amazing the change in this mans life. ONLY through God!

Prayers for you all
-REV.

March 28, 2007 - Msg 50800: My goodness, REV, what a wonderful story. It illustrates so well the power of God. What a privilege to be used by Him in that way. And, no coincidence that you're in town this week.

The Plum is up and walking around pretty well this morning. I managed to get the night off last night, so didn't have to leave her, but do have to work tonight, then we see her vet again in the morning. I just keep asking God to heal her, and I appreciate your prayerful support as well. She's part of God's creation too, and I know He hears us.

Boo, I applaud your involvement in your kids' school experiences. So many parents just send their kids to school, and expect it to all turn out well. Actually, that's about what I did when mine were that age, but of course there weren't many options back then. We had a choice between public school, and pricey private schools. Of the private schools, there were two types. The least pricey were usually run by a local church, and while the children were treated well, the quality of the education was questionable. Then there were the extremely costly ones, usually founded by some socialite family as a training ground for their debutantes. The kids got a good education, but they also learned to be snotty little snobs, or fell victim to the ostracism of the rich kids. So, we just sent our kids to school, helped them with homework, and hoped for the best. A kid with special needs could have a pretty hard time. I'm glad there are a few other options today.

Well, housework calls, my least favorite thing. I'll bet if I look, I can find something that needs to be done out in the yard, ya think? Sugarplum can watch me from the sunroom door. She says hey! --Romeena

March 28, 2007 - Msg 50801: Good morning folks. Just a minute to say howdy.

What a story, REV. Great testimony.

BOO: Remember to pray about it and do what you're led or believe best. It will turn out like it's supposed to. Sometimes the little bit of His plan that we have before us doesn't make much sense, but we can't see the "big picture" like He can. Prayers.

See y'all at lunch.

March 28, 2007 - Msg 50807: Hey, Spot. Those fireants are a real pain, aren't they? One thing I've found that helps is to spread dry molasses everywhere. You can get it at any garden center, spread it with your fertilizer spreader, and it does seem to help. Nothing gets rid of the miserable things completely, but the dry molasses will help a little. It's worth a try.

March 28, 2007 - Msg 50808: Thanks Ro, yes, Sean's problems complicate things but we deal with it. I am a little sad about it, though, because he will miss his school and his friends there. We are blessed to have 2 christian schools nearby to choose from. The one I visited yesterday is smaller, and more relaxed. The staff seems real friendly, and if you can believe this, the tuition is only 125.00 per month per child. There seems to be a very different "feel" to the school that I like so far. I think it is probably our answer, we'll see. Thanks to you all for your prayers for him. I don't think I mentioned to you that Sean's Tourette's symptoms have been in remission for almost a year now (much longer than previous remission that usually lasts 3-6 months). Sometimes kids seems to become free of TS in their adolescent years, so I am hopeful that maybe that is what has happened. He still has the anxiety disorder issues but no TS symptoms, Praise the Lord.

REV, thank you so much for sharing that story with us, what a wonderful thought that God was able to reach that man through music. God bless you for being faithful in your service to Jesus.

Glad Plum seems to be feeling better today. Continued prayers for her.

Peggy, that's just wonderful about the woman you were able to lead to the Lord last night. God bless you for letting God use you to share the truth... You asked about the bible study, well, I had a roomful last night and they were all very eager and full of questions. It was a good session and I think we were able to cut through to the truth. Many of them had alot of strange ideas from their upbringing. Thanks for asking. I am really encouraged by the girl named Cathi, who I mentioned before. She is the one who said she did not believe in Jesus or the bible but she is always in bible study and I have noticed a change in her thinking as we uncover biblical truth. Thanks for your prayers for the girls. We are going to try to have a special service for them on Easter Sunday, I hope.

Well, need to go help Sean with his homework. Take care!

LOVE TOM.

March 29, 2007 - Msg 50824: Good afternoon everyone. Hey, TOM. A busy morning here. And guess what happened to me at lunch? A bird decided to leave something behind on my jacket. Thankfully, the Mrs. noticed it when she came to pick junior up from preschool; otherwise, I would have marched right into Panera and been a little embarrassed later. Do y’all have Panera? Try their IC Mango. It’s great.

MISS PEGGY: I’ve been an “official” porch-sitter for going on about two years now, I believe, but I was a lurker for about a year before that.

ASA: We’re sort of finished our kitchen remodel. The contractor finished his part on Tuesday (yeah!). We need to finish up the painting and put down the new flooring. Hopefully we’ll have that done in the next week or two. Sometime this spring the electrician (who is a friend) will be by to rewire the kitchen. It’s been prepped for, and there is a void along the ceiling at the top of the wall to accommodate new wiring. Afterward, large crown molding will be installed (that’s me again). Then we will officially be done. Our favorite things are the new window over the sink and the microwave/range hood combo over the stove (too bad we can’t use it until we get rewired—it needs a dedicated outlet).

ROMEENA: Prayers for Sugarplum and you, too. We do get attached to our furry friends, don’t we?

Our new dog is becoming part of the family. Generally, everything is going well and the kids absolutely love him. His “accidents” are very infrequent now. For an old dog (about 10, probably) he certainly does like to chew. He’s already gotten a couple of the kids’ toys and a few of the baby’s. Since we got him some new toys of his own he chews on other things less often, but hasn’t stopped. I think he does it for attention since he rarely does it when we are not home. He also has some pretty major separation issues. He literally howls when we leave and takes forever to stop. There have been times when he is howling as I leave and is still howling when I come back ten or fifteen minutes later. He is very attached to Nora, and he whimpers and cries when she goes into the bathroom or leaves. Tuesday, he howled when the contractors left at lunch, and he hasn’t even gone near them! Poor thing.

Well, coffee—actually IC Mango—break is over!

Hey Me-They, your poor doggy! I guess he is just wondering what will happen to him when everyone leaves. I'm sure the chewing is related to the separation anxiety. tHE JOY OF FLOWRES
IS SEEING THEM BLOOM.
The joy of a smile
dispels all gloom.
The jo of a tree is
to sit in its shade.
The joy of spring is
a bird's serenade.
The joy of a rainbow,
with colors so true,
is proof that the storm clouds
have all passed from view.
The joy of a snowflake
so soft and so fine,
each one's light and dainty-
in patterned design.
The joy of a mother is
seen in her eyes
through children God gave her-
her most treasured prize.

March 29, 2007 - Msg 50837: Good evening, all. Beautiful poem, Tom. I'm glad you find joy in flowers - so do I. The Plum is apparently feeling pretty good this evening, bouncing around like she always does. I notice her moving a little more slowly, and she's more careful about jumping on or off the furniture, but she is twelve after all. The medicine her vet gave me for her seems to be helping as far as her hip and leg soreness goes. The big concern is the lump in her belly, and I guess the ultrasound exam tomorrow will give us some answers. I'm not sure I want to know, but have no choice. Thanks to all of you for your concern. Lucy, you asked what you could do - pray, honey, just pray. She's one of God's small creatures, and I know He hears those prayers.

How long have I been on the porch? Well, I'm not sure, but I go back beyond the archives that are available. I guess it must be about 8 or 9 years. There are lots of folks from those days who don't come around anymore. I wish they would - there were some really nice folks, and y'all would like them. I came here after my husband's death, still very battered and bruised emotionally, and found a lot of support and encouragement here. A very unique place, in these days of blogs and myspace and the like. We owe so much to Floyd for maintaining this safe place for us. Hip, hip, hooray for Floyd!

Well, we're about to have a storm, and Velcro Plum is desperately trying to get as close as she can. I haven't been to bed since working last night, so think I'm going to retire, and take this little baby furkid with me, where she can snuggle and feel safe. She says hey! --Romeena

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50838: Good morning porch. I hope and pray you are all well and ready for Friday and the weekend. I know I am.
Prayers continue for our little Sugarplum and that the mass is nothing serious. Bless her little heart.

Hey Pappabear and Goober, good to hear from you again. Glad you are doing well.

Possum, we had rain and snow. I'll send you some right now.

Let's see, I joined the porch in 2000 so I have been here 7 years now. Have seen a lot of folks come and go. Like Romeena, I wish the ones who have left would come back. Very good people. But life can get hectic sometimes and get in the way.

Where on earth has Mrs. Wiley run off too? And Charlotte Tucker? I declare you'd think Homemaker was cooking meatballs again and scared em off.:)

What's for breakfast Spot? I am starved.

Hey, today is National Hug a Bank Guard Day. So hug me folks.

Hey Lucy, I've been sitting here on the porch for about 5 years and I never could have known 5 years ago what a blessing it would be to have such a loving, supportive group of friends. Thanks for making that available, Floyd.

Prayers fof Sugarplum's test today.

I will be taking Erin to the doctor today. She is sick with a fever and seems to have the same flu that I had last week, poor baby.

Love to All,
Boo

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50842: Good Friday morning porch family, hope everyone is well today. Prayers fo the Plum and her test today. Please send up a prayer for Mr. Maude as well. He is having some tests and we are waiting results so please pray for us as well. Hopefully things will be fine. Chilly this morning and some rain moving in this week end. My daugther is going to Asheville, NC tomorrow to visit Biltmore House/Gardens with her 7th grade class. She is quite excited, prayers for their safety.
How about we have lunch today at Applebees, my treat. I am going to work til about 11 today and off to run errands and such. My husband is working this week end so the errands and such will be up to me. You guys have a good day and see you at Applebees. Prayers for all and for Erin as well Boo. Big Maude

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50844: Good morning everyone.

I pray all goes well for Sugarplum today, ROMEENA, and that Erin feels better real soon, BOO.

APB for so many folks: AFD (how's Reagan?), IDELLE, GOOBER, CHARLOTTE, STERLING, MARTY, BWB, DWF, DIXIE (Maybe the kids got her?), IRISHTER, and a handful more. Even HM has gone missing the last few days. Must be cooking up a mess of meatballs for ASA's return.

Did anyone catch Rosie's rant yesterday? She used to make me angry. Now, it just makes me sad that someone is so mentally ill and isn't getting help.

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50845: Uh, sorry, ASA, forgot your hug. I'll do it as long as it's that one-second-pat-your-back-hard-two-times hug that guys do. I wouldn't want to ruin our macho images in front of the ladies.

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50846: Morning all. Hugs to you Asa. Remember to sit up straight and don't go to sleep on the job!

Prayers for Sugarplum, Erin, and Mr. Maude.

Romeena, I need some advice concerning the furkid. He can't stand for us to 'check him over' (clean his eyes, check for fleas, clean his feet off, etc.) He growls and bites! My oldest daughter is the one who does this and doesn't know how to get the upper hand. She's told him 'no' firmly while using something to make a loud noise at the same time to try and get him to know what 'no' means. (We read that you are supposed to make an association, otherwise they don't understand what you mean.) Nothing we have tried has worked. Thinking we might need to send him to obedience school. Any thoughts?

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50847: And I forgot to mention prayers for Mr. Maude, too!

Hey Miss Peggy!

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50848: Good morning, all. Just got home with the Plum from having her sonogram done. The news is not as good as I had hoped. Her spleen is full of nodules and is hugely swollen. A needle biopsy is not an option, because they only correlate with the truth about 65% of the time. Also, malignant or not, the thing needs to come out. It's at risk for rupture, and if it does, she would bleed out before I could get her to some help. So, our next step is surgery. Her vet is considering whether to do it himself, call in a consulting assistant, or refer to someone else. I expect him to refer. He said he's not comfortable doing such a big surgery on such a tiny dog, but he has a friend who does them a lot. I respect him for knowing his limitations and not just forging ahead. I don't know yet when this will be done, but it will be soon. He said she could rupture the thing just by jumping off a chair or something, which she does all the time. So, that's the story. Please keep praying for her, especially pray that the nodules are not malignant once they get them out.

Miss Peggy, you do have a problem. Some dogs really take offense at being handled like that. Even the Plum gets in a snit when I try to comb around her feet. She's pretty patient with the rest of it, but not her feet. My best advice to you if your puppy gets upset over everything, is just to get a little muzzle and put it on him when you need to do something like that. He won't like it, but he'll get used to it, and he can't bite you when it's on. It's very important that he not be allowed to bite. If he does, he'll think he can do it again, because he'll get away with it. You're not going to hit him, so he gets away with, in his mind. Prevention is the best thing. Just muzzle him and proceed slowly and deliberately, talking to him, reassuring him, stop frequently and comfort him. When you're finished, praise him and reward him with a treat, something really yummy that he'll want to earn again. I'd reserve that particular treat for just those times. You have to persevere, and win this one. My daughter had a Shih-Tzu that refused to allow anyone to touch her ears, so they let her win, and eventually her ears got terribly infected, very sore, very stinky, required cleaning under anesthesia, and she finally went deaf. You just have to win, no choice.

Well, guess I'll go cuddle my poor little baby. I really hate that she's having to go through this. Right now, she's running around here like a puppy, and I'm the one that's scared to death, afraid with every move she's going to rupture that thing. You can bet the surgery will be soon.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50849: By the way, Miss Peggy, we should ask Mavis about your puppy and what to do. She's the expert in that field. I'd be interested to know what she thinks about my suggestions, whether I'm on the right track or all wet. Mavis, are you lurking anywhere? --Romeena

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50850: Thanks for the suggestion, Romeena. I had thought of a muzzle, but as Briscoe would say, 'kinda hate to go that far'. I believe, however, that it may be a necessity. Will continue to pray for the Plum. Keep us posted.

Hey to M-T.

Mavis, are you a dog trainer? What do you think?

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50853: Hey Y'all! Ro,keep the faith. So many of us are praying for the Plum-everything will work out,I'm sure. Wish I could do more for you. On top of what you're dealing with,I keep seeing dangerous weather bulletins for your neck of the woods. Pardon the pun,but when it rains,it pours, doesn't it? Hang in there.
Speaking of rain,I'll be eagerly awaiting the rain/snow mix you're sending my way,Asa. Send enough so that I can share with Rev.!
Miss Peggy,I know Mavis is a pet groomer-not sure about the training part, but I'd agree with Ro that she'd be the Porchster to direct your questions to.
Big Maude,I am envious of your daughter and her field trip-I love Asheville! Haven't visited Biltmore yet. That's a great place for a field trip though. Hope she enjoys it and has a safe trip. Prayers for Mr. Maude as well.
Boo,hope Erin's okay.Keep us posted.
Hope everybody has a good weekend. I'm headed to the Flowertown Festival in Summerville,SC in the morning. Great arts & crafts! I look forward to it every year like a kid at Christmas! There's a booth that sells the best candles I've ever come across-I'll get a couple for the Porch! Just can't let Asa rock too close to the candles- wouldn't want him to scorch his mullet! Ha!
Y'all take care!

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50854: Thank you for the prayers and well-wishes! Erin saw the doc and they said it was just a virus that will last 4 or 5 days, not the flu. She seems to be doing pretty well and is lying on the couch watching a movie.

Prayers for Mr. Maude. May all go well with him.

So sorry about the Plum. We'll continue to pray, of course.

Hope you have clean shorts, Me-They, cause I am way yonder too tired to do laundry today!

Thanks to those of you who prayed for the school situation for my children. We did enroll them in a smaller Christian school that seems like a good place for them. They were accepted already, so the door was definitely open and that's what we were praying for. I have been pleased so far with the friedly staff and just the "feel" of the place...just feels right, you know?

Better go eat some lunch,

Boo

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50855: BOO: I hope so, too--what if I get in an accident?!? Glad that Erin is resting comfortably and that the school situation is worked out. Try to take it easy this weekend.

ROMEENA: Continued prayers for Sugarplum.

Have a great trip, POSSUM. Good to hear that you're climbing out from under that rock.

A few "quotes from God" I saw on a website today:
"That 'Love thy neighbor' thing--I meant that."
"You think it's hot HERE?..."
"Have you read my #1 bestseller? There will be a test."

Anyway, you all have a great weekend!

Me-They

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50856: Hi, all. "Just feels right, you know?" Yep, Boo, I know, and that feeling is, in my opinion, the leading of the Spirit. My mother always said "When in doubt, don't", which is pretty much the flip side of that. Hmmm. "Flip side." I wonder if today's kids would even know to what that term refers? If you've never seen a phonograph record, with two playing sides, how would you know? Even disc jockeys don't use it anymore, because they play CDs. My, how things do change.

Tree men are here, cutting all the cottonwood buds out of my trees. I'm not about to have that miserable stuff ruining my yard. It worked last year, and it will work this year, I'll bet.

Still waiting for the vet to call me back with a plan for the Plum's surgery. I hate this waiting. I'll be glad when it's all over with.

I'm glad Erin doesn't have anything serious. Prayers for Mr. Maude, and everyone else who's ailing. About the rain around here, so far we've got clouds, a little wind, but very little rain. Should have some tonight, I hope.

Well, guess I'll go check on the tree guys. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50857: Boo, so glad you got the kids enrolled and are at peace with the situation. That's such a good feeling! However, you've got to watch out for "friedly" staff!! LOL Sorry, just couldn't resist!

Possum, hope you enjoy the festival. I love going to those, too.

Would ya'll please pray for me around 7 tonight. We are going to our annual banquet at the Pregancy Help Center where I volunteer. The director has asked me to give a testimony about my experiences there. Since I don't consider myself a public speaker, I'm a little nervous! However, I know that the Lord is going to help me at just the time I need Him to.

MAYBERRY DEPUTY

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50861: I spoke with Plum's doctor, and he has opted to refer her to a surgical specialist at an animal surgery clinic over in Dallas. As he said, they're equipped for whatever happens, and he isn't. For example, if she should need blood, which is a real possibility with a splenectomy, he's not prepared to provide that. I appreciate his candor, and his willingness to give up a lucrative case in favor of the patient. So, now I have to wait, probably until morning, to hear from the clinic and get a date scheduled. Meantime, I'm having to resist the urge to carry her around on a pillow. I'm terrified that she's going to do something to cause that thing to rupture, and I'll lose her. Happily, she seems to have no idea of how much danger she's in, and is just her usual merry little self. Thanks, friends, for all your support. It means so much. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50862: Romeena, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Try not to worry!
- Hazel

March 30, 2007 - Msg 50863: Plum's doctor sounds like a "peach"...hehe, just trying to make you feel a little better, Ro. Seriously, I am thankful he is so careful with her. Why not carry her around on a pillow if it makes you feel better? I carried an injured cat around on a pillow and fed him with an eye dropper years ago. He had a broken jaw. We became the best of friends and were for 10 years.

Thanks to all of you for your words concerning the children. I really appreciate it. Your words were especially kind concerning Erin, Homemaker and I am hoping for the same thing.

Peggy, I think it's too late to pray for you but hope all went well...let us know....and I will watch out for that "friedly" staff!

I'm going to try to take Me-They's advice and take it easy this weekend but it will take some real self-control. The whole place needs a good cleaning and don't even mention the laundry!
