No, I wouldn't like frostbite, Sterling! It is getting kind of foggy tonight but it feels so wonderful and it smells like spring outside....sorry about your ears, Me-They.
Thanks, Homemaker, and thanks for the site you recommended. I have an appointment first thing in the morning with the principal.
Been a long day. Had to take Sean to the doctor about his irregular heart beat. The doc kind of freaked out on me and I think she over-reacted. She told me no strenuous activity and that he has to see a pediatric cardiologist tomorrow and she made an appointment with an endocrine doc for next week! She started talking about how he needed to be on cholesterol meds again and I said I never heard of such a thing for an 11 year old. I told her my cholesterol was the same as his at his age and she said, "But you weren't as heavy as he is". I said, "Yes, I think I might have been". Anyway she said she is concerned about the heart palpitations, etc. and she went and called the cardiologist office while I was still there and made an appointment for him and then sent me across the street for a chest xray. I think he is fine but I guess a cardiac work-up wouldn't hurt him any since we have a strong family history of cardiac problems. I am looking forward to talking to the Endocrinologist about the cholesterol to hear if he is like Sean's primary doc. I just hate to put him on more meds. I am trying to be patient. There was a man in our church prayer group tonight whose 9 year old had cancer a year ago and he was talking about their ordeal with chemo, etc. Right now the child is cancer free but it made me very thankful that we aren't dealing with something as serious as that. Anyway, I would appreciate your prayers, as always. It would be just great to hear the endocrine doc say, "he doesn't need meds at his age!"...
Nighty-Night,
Boo

Hey, does anyone know anything about water in the basement? I know I had a water problem in our old house, but that was just a leak after it rained.
This one started yesterday and I think it has something to do with the cold temps. Is it possible for pipes to freeze and make water back up and come out of a drain in the floor, because that is what it looks like is happening. There is a pipe going down into the floor nearby but I don't really see where it would be leaking. The main water pooling seems to be around the drain in the floor, and there is a bunch of sediment brought up as well, and that is on the floor now. I wouldn't worry about it so much if it was confined to the concrete floor, but it has pushed out passed the door and has saturated some of the carpet in the next room.
Any "tool-timer's" out there who may have run into this kind of problem before?
If it is a problem with the drain being frozen somewhere down the line I need to find a way to unthaw that somehow. Or wait until spring, and wear hip-waders in the basement in the meantime.

Gosh, Sterling, I sure don't have any ideas. We just don't have basements in Texas, unless you count the ones in big buildings. Houses just don't have them. Sure sounds like a drain is backing up, though. A drain pipe had collapsed beneath my front yard a while back, and when my washing machine tried to drain, water came up (very nasty water, I might add) in every drain in the house. My shower was a mess.
Well, gotta run. I'm off to take my friend to her knee therapy. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
February 08, 2007 - Msg 49421:
Good morning everyone.
STERLING: Have an old, old house, me and moisture problems are on a first name basis. From what you've described, your problem could come from several places. First, yes, drains can freeze under certain circumstances if they are partially clogged anyway. You may not notice this when all is well but sediment does build up in some drains. Second, do you have a well? Sometimes a leak in the well line oustide will follow along the pipe back into the basement. Since basement floor drains are (or should be) placed at the lowest point, it still makes sense that water would pool there. And, if water is pooling at a partially clogged drain, it may allow sediment to be brought up. Finally, don't discount other pipes. Sometimes a leak across a house will only be evident in a remote location; remember, water follows the path of least resistance. But my bet is on the drain itelf. Try hot water and a drain snake. If that's not it, at least you'll know your drain is clear. Oh, one more thing, you didn't mention bad smells, but if you have a septic system and do smell sewage, make sure that your tank is pumped. A full or clogged tank also will back up into the lowest drain first, which is usually in a basement.
I'm not Bob Villa, but I hope that helps a little.
BOO: Lots of prayers for Sean (and you) going out today.

Thanks Romeena and Me-They for the info and help.
And no, Me-They, I don't have a well, we use city water - clorine and all.
There is a smell, but it is not a sewery smell. More like just wet rocks or sand smell, which makes sense, looking at that covering of rocky stuff now lining my basement floor. Right now the water is all but gone, but I am going to go down and clean up the sediment before it floods again, if it does, to keep it from going back down the drain.

Well, like Ro said, no basements in Texas so no advice. Sounds like Me-They covered it real well.
Thanks for the prayers for Sean! His appointment in after lunch.
I had my little meeting with the principal today concerning Erin and got nowhere. The guy wouldn't let me get a word in! It was like trying to catch a streetcar...I kept looking for a way to jump on and hang on. To say anything I had to interrupt (and I hate doing that). Now, what is it these days with people talking and not listening? I have had my fill of it after dealing with Sean's doctor yesterday. The poor Cardiologist we see to day is gonna fill my wrath if he tries it! Anyway, I told the principal my concerns with the grades, etc. and he basically told me that is just how the ABEKA is done and that if she isn't doing better by the end of the year we will have to talk about keeping her another year in kinder because she will really have a tough time in first grade. As it is right now, Erin doesn't even know that she is getting grades and she isn't missing out because of it. She is still able to do all the feild trips, etc. but if she gets into first grade and can't make honor role she will lose some rewards and will know that she is getting grades. When I was sitting in the waiting room waiting to see the principle a little girl came into the office who was in first grade and I struck up a conversation with her. I asked her what grade she is in and she said, "1st but I'm supposed to be in second. I make D's and F's". Horrors! How could that be happening in first grade?! Something is wrong with the system and I'm going to keep talking. I will find other options for Erin after this year if things don't change. This is just crazy.
OK, I am finished ranting and raving for now...Time to relax for a bit. It's been a busy morning.

STERLING: If you're on city sewage, if could be a tree root or sediment that's partially blocking the line, slowing the darin flow and allowing it to freeze with the weather. If you are getting sandy or rocky sediment from a sewage line, it obviosuly has a hole in it. Another thing I thought may be that your basement drain may not be tied into your system but may instead drain into a dry well somewhere oustide. If you have an exterior basement door that opens into a concrete area that also has a drain it may be under there. It could be that the well has filled or failed. Try the drain snake or call a plumber to take a scope into it. Good luck.

As for that obtuse principal, I would be tempted to make another appointment, and start it off by saying, "You know, last time you talked and I listened. This time, I'd like to talk, and I'd appreciate it if you would listen." Then help him pick his jaw up off the floor.
It's still looking like my house is rented. Papers not yet signed, but that should happen tomorrow. Prayers, please. We're going into the ninth month with no rent coming from that house, yet the taxes, insura#nce (intentional #)and utilities have marched right on. Argh.

She graduates this year and has done well with home school. Hope you can come to a peace about this soon.

Hey, ky girl, spot(bring me back a plate!), M-T, Ro, Sterling, auh2o, hm and all. Boo, still praying for Sean, hope the visit went well. About Erin, as you know, I have a little girl her age. I think the advice you have recieved here is good, and I wouldn't worry. It's too early to worry. Go by YOUR instinct. I had a situation with Miller this year where they wanted him to so to a magnet school in our area for gifted kids. We kind of pushed him to try it, even though he was NOT excited about it. He went for about 9 weeks, and was miserable. The conference I had with his teachers there was awful. It was all negative, about all his problems adjusting to "their" way of doing things. Poor thing, he was so stressed, he broke out in hives regularly. We put him back in the school around the corner, and he couldn't be happier, plus back to honor roll. They(school administrators and teachers) don't know our kids like we do to know what's best for them. And that concludes my rant.
As you can see by the length of this post, I relented and took a lortab for the pain, so I can type! Hubby (dear, sweet man he is) has confined me to bed for a bit, so I'll be around all evening. Boo, let us know how it went!

You guys are the best! So concerned and loving...Well, Sean got a clean bill of heart-health from the cardiologist. His EKG and echocardiogram were both normal, praise the Lord. The doc is going to put him on a 24hr monitor just to see if he has any arrhythmias, but he doesn't expect any problems. The cardiologist also told me that Sean is too young to be on cholesterol medicine (I am validated!) and that we should continue to watch his diet and exercise. Thanks for your prayers.
Thanks for your words of encouragement concerning Erin. Millie I applaud you for doing what was best for Miller instead of pushing him...alot of parents (who live vicariously through their children) would have kept him in that school. I believe a child's well-being is more important than being in a gifted program. Good for you and your husband! Miller is obviously very intelligent and he will thrive where he is if he is happy there.
Thanks for Peggy and KYGirl for sharing your stories as well. I just love all this encouragement and understanding. ky girl, I believe that was Gomer who told Barney to go up an alley and holler fish, when Barney was ticketing him for an illegal u-turn. I could be mistaken.
UP to 7 degrees?? My stars. Brrrr.
You know, my husband (who was in sales work for many years) used to say, "It's as honorable to sell as it is to buy." I think if everyone would do as you did, and flip that channel, or refuse to buy a ticket to a movie with a bad rating, they'd quit making them. As long as there is an audience, then film makers will keep making them. That principle applies everywhere. The best way to end prost-itution is to round up and jail the "buyers" as well as the "sellers". As long as some people respond to spam ads, there will always be spam. And so on, ad nauseum.
By the way, I wonder how the makers of Spam (the ham wannabe) feel about their brand name being hijacked to mean what it has come to mean - the unwelcome stuff that clogs our email boxes? Not much they can do about it, I guess, but I'll bet it's annoying to them.
Well, back to my Plum cuddling. She's such a sweet little ol' thing! She says hey! --Romeena

Auh2o, if there's one thing Me-They is an expert at it's leakage....and that's all I'm gonna say. I'm not one to gossip....of couse sometimes I do, it just "DEPENDS"...
SPOT, I remember when the first JAWS came out in the 70's. Everyone down here on the coast was terrified to go in the water for about a year...I don't think I'll ever be the same, ha. As far as the house goes, we are still trying to get our ducks in a row...hopefully will actually start building in May.
Ro, you are right. It was Gomer who said it to Barney during his, "citizen's arrest!". Hey, Spam vs. Spam...one clogs our email boxes, the other clogs our arteries. Is that why they call it Spam? "Hey to Sugarplum".
Hi KYGirl. It IS terrible what you sometimes find on regular, basic cable. Bad launguage is fast becoming the norm in the "dumbing-down" of America. It really is just very childish behavior to use such language. My dad always used to say that only people who were not intelligent enough to think of better ways to express themselves use foul language. Interesting take on things..
Well, my coffee is almost done and time to get things ready for school. Talk to you all later,
Boo

Wanted to tell you something, Millie. Remember yesterday we were talking about how we feel like we fail our kids sometimes? Well, when I put Erin to bed last night Erin said, "Aunt Suzie loves me more than you do.". I scolded her a little and told her that it wasn't true. I was a little bothered by it because just yesterday she told me that she wanted Aunt Suzie to be her mom. Well, she started to cry and said she didn't know why she said it but as I questioned her, I could see that she really had some hurts. I have to tell you that Erin is always the one in the family who gets put on the back burner. It seems like I stay so busy that when she wants to spend time with me I tell her to go play or watch TV. She spends most of her time outside of school doing things by herself, and when my sister is here she gives her alot of attention. Erin said in her 5 yr old way, "I feel like I am in the middle of the circle by myself." It just broke my heart to realize I had been treating her that way. When I asked her, "Don't you know that your mom loves you?" she said, "I'm not sure". That really got my attention and as I started to think about it I realized that sometimes she only seems to get negative attention from me during the course of the day. I take time to tell her when I am seeing good things and I tell her I love her but my actions aren't backing me up alot of times. I am easily irritated by her and am so negative much of the time. Well, I spent almost 2 hours with her at bedtime, just laying in my bed with her and talking. It was such a sweet time. She sang me 2 songs she made up about Jesus and they were so sweet and she even preached to me a bit about Jesus dying on the cross for us and her theology was dead-center, ha! I could tell she was just eating up all my attention and I wanted to kick myself for pushing her aside so many times in my busyness. I need to be patient and understanding towards her. As some of you know, when you have a child with special needs (like Sean), sometimes the other child gets left out and I don't want to do that. I am going to really work on it. Better go...

M-T First, I inadvertently call attention to your gastrointestinal state and now I've managed to question if you have water leakage issues. I meant to compliment your advanced knowledge, with regard, to all things "hydro."
Boo-You're gonna dig me in deeper with M-T.
spot-When I first stop by the porch I didn't realize that the posts were signed using TAGS related names so I used the auh2o. I am a big admirer of Barry Goldwater.I've read all his books and collect memorabilia of his career. And, this may be a stretch but, his TAGS angle could be that when he ran for President it was during the height of TAGS popularity. He also carried the South (and Arizona) and not much more in '64.
ky girl- I can't take credit for the uniqueness of auh2o, Barry's campaign used it quite often. Also, the quote, "Why don't you run up an alley and holler fish!" is also from the movie "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken."

Good morning everyone.
Now, let me set the record straight, I do not now, nor have in my adulthood, suffered from uncontrollable releasing of my lower orifices. Now, the upper one is a different matter. That one is quite often open and spewing when the other two on the sides of my head should be open and working.
Deeper, AUH2O? Any deeper you'll need an English-to-Chinese translation guide ;).
BOO: That is a wonderful story that we can all learn from. Our kids should be our number one earthly priority, not other stuff like fly-killin'. Some people elect to have children then resent it when their lives change completely and they are no longer the center of their universe. Our culture often preaches that we are the best for our children when we think of ourselves. Sure, we've got to look out for our health and get things done, but our own wants need to come second to our kids' needs. We all may stumble sometimes like you said you have done, BOO, but as long as we're doing our best, with the Lord's help, we can't beat ourselves up. We will make mistakes. The important thing is that we recogize them, turn around, and learn from them. Sounds like you certainly did that!
Well, I'll be back later.

..speaking of DEPENDS, isn't the story of the Astronaut who was arrested for attempted murder and kidnapping bizarre? She was wearing Depends when they arrested her. She said she was wearing them so she wouldn't have to stop and use the restroom on the 900 mile trip she was taking...I have to agree with Dave Letterman when he said, "I'd like to see that car that can go 900 miles before needing a fill-up"! ha
Sorry I dug you in deeper with Me-They, Auh2o. I'll put away the shovel...for now, anyway. hehe...wonder where that expression about running up an alley and hollering fish came from?? Sounds like an interesting story.
I was just watching the news about the fighting going on in Jerusalem today...apparently unrest among the Islamic worshippers. Can anyone answer this question for me?: How in the world did it happen that a mosque was built on the old site of Herod's temple (that was destroyed in 70AD)?

Good morning - don't worry auh2o, I don't really have a TAGS name either, I just pictured Aunt Bee being the busy little homemaker so I opted for the homemaker title.
Boo - I am really disturbed by your Christian schools mentality. Of course, they can beat to their own drum and I am glad that Erin doesn't know that she gets grades. I think I would have to have second thoughts about sending her there next year. I understand ABEKA curriculum but there has to be some give and take, especially with little ones. I am so glad that Sean and his heart are okay! God is good and He is faithful.
Oh and Maude, it has been a stressful day - just give me all of your Little Debbies, and no one will be harmed. Asa, get your hands off of my Swiss Cake Rolls or I'll YODEL you!

Thanks Me-They (you snuck in on me)! I agree with you completely about putting our children's welfare as no 1 priority. Sometimes I forget that God expects me to do that. Thank you for the encouragement, you are such a blessing to me (well, you all are for that matter). Now as for your above post, nothing short of hilarious....speaking of hilarious, where is ASA these days?

Hey Homemaker, didn't see you either. Thanks for you thoughts concerning Erin. I am most certainly thinking hard about sending her back next year. I am even contemplating taking her out now. I need to have a long talk with Bruce about it because last night, Erin told me that she wishes she could read like the other kids in her class and that they, "make A's". We have spring break coming up and I think I will try to take extra time working with her during that time and after school and try to make it fun for her. She likes to do schoolwork with me or Bruce in the evenings so I will try to do that for her and maybe she will catch up. If not, so be it. I'm not going to pressure her. I have been meaning to ask you about the situation that you had in your local high school. Did that resolve?

Everything is about as normal as ever around here - it is unfortunate that the staff and the administration do not see eye to eye. Most of the high schools around here are way to lax on discipline - they may have parents mad at them if they try to enforce the rules.
About Erin - that is one of the reasons I gave you the websites, the other one I like is A to Z reading. Most of the things on there are for a price and not free downloads. I know she is a smart girl - just some of her insights let you know that.
Did you know that The INcredible Mr. Limpet has been on several times here in the past week. My son commented there should be a Barney Fife Marathon: Mr. LImpet, the Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Chicken Little, the Apple DUmpling Gang, etc. Wouldn't that be neat!?

BOO: I agree with HOMEMAKER. Nora's Christian school uses Abeka as well, but our situation is nothing like yours, thankfully. Since she is our first one in school I'm no expert on the curriculum, but in her case (and teh things we hear from other parents) things are going pretty smoothly. I have a feeling it has more to do with either the school's own philosophy or the teacher. If it's the latter, next year should be different; if it's the former, I'd think long and hard about continuing there. That's my two cents, anyway.
Yeah, where's ASA? No wonder there were a few Little Debbie's left for us.

Good Afternoon Porch!
Boo, I trick I used to get my older kids to read was I would send them on scavenger hunts through the house. I would make a card that said something like, "look on the bed", then I would put a card there that said "look on the sink", because she is a new reader you might mix pictures and words... ultimately the cards would lead the kids to a candy treasure or small toy. I am sure the sites homemaker gave you for reading would have great ideas too. Probably the single best thing, though, is reading to them, and I am sure you already know that!
homemaker, please don't yodel at me, but I am afraid I hate the Swiss Cake rolls!
Charlotte, please check the archives, my daughter left a message for you about her experience with acutane and dryness.
Spot, thanks for the delicious breakfast, after eating all that I have no idea why I ate all those Swiss Cake Rolls!! I guess it was because Big Maude put 'em right there in front on me and I couldn't resist!
Have a great Mayberry Afternoon!

Hey, y'all. I'm sure everyone has received that email picture of the big brown hound dog and the little boy, kneeling beside the boy's bed, obviously in prayer. The dog looks for all the world as though he's praying too, and it's about the sweetest picture I've ever seen. I've received it at least a dozen times, and it's always a day-brightener to open an email and there it is again. If anyone hasn't seen it, let me know and I'll send it to you. Oh, Millie! How I wish there was something I could do for you. I'd like to come over and make you a cup of tea, do your laundry, catch up the housework that you're certainly not able to do right now, just whatever would help you. My heart goes out to you. I have some idea what you're going through, after a year of chemo in 1979-80, but the drugs I took were surely not as potent as what you're getting, and I know you must be terribly sick. I'm praying for you, love. Hang in there. We're ALL praying, I'm sure. This too shall pass. --Romeena

Ditto the prayers for Millie. I, like Romeena, wish I could come cook a dinner for your family, help with housework, etc.
Romeena, you can send me that e-mail. I am not sure I have seen it. Thanks!
I had parent teacher conferences today. My son's teacher said he was "an anchor in the class." She said he is a great leader and she can count on him to do the right thing. Of course, I came home and told him she said he was, "an anchor, dragging down the class!" Then I had to tell him I was just kidding. It must be my dry Irish humor or something. That poor kid of mine!
Going to run out and see my daughter in her wedding gown today. It's the final fitting! I am sure she will look beautiful!

I've just been reading Anna Nicole's story on the MSN home page. How sad. How pitifully sad. That poor girl. Dysfunctional? Certainly, though it seems ironic that the likes of Rosie O'Donnell, the queen of dysfunction, would make that observation. Poor Anna Nicole had her priorities all muddled up, she passed the muddle on to her son, and it got them both. It reminds me of the parable of the rich man, who had more wealth than he knew what to do with but was seeking still more. He arrived at the idea of tearing down his barns and building bigger ones, to store up even more worldly goods, but God had other ideas. He called him a fool, and told him that "this night thy soul will be required of thee, and then whose shall these things be?"
If Anna Nicole married that rich 90-yr old man because she truly loved him, then that's the love story of the century. Nope, I'm afraid she married him in order to inherit his millions, and found herself having to battle his family for the inheritance. Now she's gone, and the battle will rage on for years. Poor little Dannielynn will be the pawn in the middle of it, and it will only be through God's intervention that the child will grow up to be anything like a normal person. Men are coming out of the woodwork, claiming to be her father. If there wasn't a big inheritance at stake, I would imagine that any man who knew he was a possibility would just keep quiet and hope no one else was aware, lest he be given the responsibility. The money? Now that's another matter. Suddenly they're ready to face their "responsibility". How interesting. How tragic. How sad.
Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
