Well, at least I know now that my sickness isn't caused by stress, at least for the most part. Unfortunate, because Kai has it now. Poor thing woke up coughing. It looks like the same thing I have. Like me, no fever, thank God. Gave her the only thing we had - Children's Tylenol+Cold, and then let her suck on a sore throat pop for a little while.
In between sips of water, she says out of nowhere in her little, sweet(and now raspy) voice, "I love you." Which is the most beautiful thing to hear.
Although I don't like her being sick, moments like those - where the room is dim, quiet, and peaceful, and she just utters those words to me - are moments I will cherish forever.

I better get to sleep. I have a feeling I am going to be up with a sick child tomorrow. But I don't mind.

Malachi 3:3 says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study. That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot then she thought again about the verse that says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver." She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, “How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it.” If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has his eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you. Pass this on right now. This very moment, someone needs to know that God is watching over them. And, whatever they're going through, they'll be a better person in the end.

I guess I have told all off you that my trials have really stepped up lately (seems to be since I started teaching the bible study at the rehab). I have already decided that I won't give up and I have been in the "refiner's fire" over the past few weeks. I don't even mean the things that have been happening in my family. I have peace about those things. I am talking about what I have been suffering in my soul...a barrage of doubts, fears and temptations that feel like they are tearing at my soul. I have been here before and I recognize what it is and I know that the battle is the Lord's. The reminder of the result of this refining process was just a real blessing. Thank you.

Thanks for the prayer Rev. I sent up a prayer for you today, too.

We went to Moms on Monday to visit with her and she said,"Boy whoever turned off that game in the middle really missed out!"

They went to Missouri to pack up Grandmas apartment and they had a special tribute day for her at the church. Mom cried thru the whole service. Many wonderful things were said about Grandma, but the thing that touched her most was that she had made a difference to so many people.

Well, took Kai to the doctor today(thanks for the prayers), due to her cough last night and wanting to see if there was anything special we could do before the plane ride later this week. But the doc checked her over and said everything looks pretty good. Hopefully it is not the calm before the storm, and is just a head cold or something. But, will be sure to keep up the fluids, vitamin C, and rest just the same.

January 23, 2007 - Msg 48853: Thanks friends for the encouragement and prayers. Group was small tonight but the girls were talkative with lots of questions! Some I sure didn't know how to answer but did my best. There was a new girl who was a crack addict and pregnant, bless her heart. One of the girls turned in a prayer request tonight that made me so sad for her. She is a very quiet girl, about 15 and rarely speaks. She will be getting out of rehab and placed in a foster home. She asked that God find her a good home when she gets out. It is so heartbreaking to think of it. No family or home to go to. Please pray for her. Her name is Jessica.

MDC, I support our government and respect our president, but I am sorry to say that I sure don't trust him. I don't have much faith in politcians, in general.

Glad Kai is doing ok.

I't about 40 degrees here and rainy. I don't think I have ever seen such cool temps for this long a stretch here in South Texas, at least that I can remember. I am really enjoying it because summer will be here to oppress us soon enough! The summers down here are incredibly hot and humid and I don't look forward to that. I am kind of looking forward to not getting up every morning at the crack of dawn and making the kid's lunches and getting them off to school. That will be a nice break.

SPOT, you asked me how the house was coming. Well, since Bruce has been home with his back, he has been working with the home planner on final houseplans. The square footage on the houseplans was just too big. We are trying to reduce it. Bruce wanted to build it too big and I have always been afraid of that. I don't want to be a total slave to the house payment! Anyway, Bruce says we will actually start laying the foundation in April or May.

Think I will stretch out on the couch for the first time today and get a little rest.

January 23, 2007 - Msg 48854: I'm super sleepy, but I had mentioned to Bryan about Bruce's back. He reminded me of when I did vax-d before my 2nd back surgery. It is this machine (for MD's and DC's) that literally pulls you apart. You hold on to these handle bars, have a belt around your waist that's attached to pulley's. It stretches your discs to ease the pain. Many people just think it's the best thing since peanuts and co-cola. You might think of checking it out.
Sterling- I'm glad Kai wasn't too bad. Enjoy your trip. You'll have a good time once you land I'm sure.
MDC- You're not alone in your approval of our government. The President isn't a smooth talker and he's made some mistakes, but I believe he really has a heart of gold.

Thanks Lucy! You are such a sweet person. I think I saw a commercial for a local DC who uses the machine you mentioned. I will have to check it out. When Bruce went to PT on Monday they put him in a deep, warm pool with weights on his ankles to releive the spasms. It seemed to help some but he is still moving so slow and the way he is having to walk is going to cause a problem with the rest of his back or hips soon. I think I will talk to him about seeing a DC, too. He has a friend who is one and I think she could help him.

According to this report, I guess everyone but Saddam "knew" there were WMDs there, and I'm still not sure they weren't. That's an awful lot of sand, and it would be pretty hard to search it all. After 9/11, we were all pretty tense, and Dubya was no different. He acted on the advice of those whose job it is to advise him, and so far, it appears everyone was wrong.
I've said it before, though, and here it comes again. Let's just suppose he hadn't invaded Iraq, and the WMDs really were there. We'd all be in deep trouble right now, and blasting him for not taking action. He can't win. Why anyone would want that job is beyond me. And may God have mercy on our souls if Hillary makes it into that office.

I, too, think he did what he did because he thought they did have them (and, yes, it is still possible they did). However, I do feel that the president is guilty of seeing what he wanted to see, and only listening to those who had answers he wanted or expected. I don't question Bush's integrity, only his judgement. I, too, believe that what we did in Iraq was the right thing. I also believe that much of the mess we are in is because early on the president was too loyal to subordinates who had their own ideas and didn't listen adequately to others outside the circle, or the military. When you find out you've been wrong, you need to admit it and change tactics. Sometimes, you need to hear opinions of others who disagree. We are all human, even the president, and none of us are above mistakes. So mistakes should not define our presidents; how they deal with them should. Bush, like nearly every politician just won't exhibit the humility necessary to say, "I'm wrong." Political suicide, perhaps, but the right thing to do is always the right thing to do.

I voted for Bush (twice) and, given the same choices, would do the same again. There's bad, then there's disaster ;).

Okay, really, that's enough politics for me!

Personally, I think Dubya is a fine (not great) President, he was handed a mess, in part, created by his father and cemented during Bubba's terms. If we would have had a continued a policy of appeasement with Iraq our future would be much more bleak. Appeasement has never worked, just look at Chamberlain and Germany, JFK and the Bay of Pigs, Carter and the Palestinians, Bush Sr and Iraq, Bubba and al Qaeda, North Korea, and Iraq. Even during the formation of our country Thomas Jefferson, and those in his corner, punted the "slavery issue" and left it for someone else to clean up. That's what appeasement does, it leaves a mess for someone else. Have there been mistakes, you bet, will there be more, you can count on it. However, we are winning this war and for those that think we are not, I think they do so only for political reason and that is nauseating.

Maybe, we should call this discussion historical and not political.

I heard a clip on Sean Hannity's show yesterday with Jimmy Carter speaking at a school. He was asked by a young child how world war 2 started. Carter went on to explain how Hitler was empowered in Germany and had desires to expand his power by going into other countries and taking over, and how the world was to slow to react to Hitler's ambitions. My gosh, speed ahead 60 years, exchange Hitler for Hussein and I think you have the same situation. Only this time we had a president with the guts to act on it. Also we had a congress with the guts to act on it... but only till things got tough. We will never know, but I sure wonder how things might be different if Sadam was still in power. Makes ya think!

Yeah, I know you have to be effective, but I'd rather vote for an "ineffective" man (or woman) of integrity and principle than one with none (or little) who is "effective" at getting things done. Roads, bridges, and healthcare are important things, but the intangible things like truth, liberty, justice, freedom, mercy, honesty, and standing on principle even when you're own friends and party desert you, is too.

Jerry Brown got my respect for standing up to the election system, even though it was more than obvious he would fail (remember, he would accept absolutely no campaign contributions from anyone or any company or interest group for more than $100); Buchanan got it because he said how he felt, and you knew exactly where he stood on any given issue--there was absolutely no question. Perot got me (the first time he ran) because he, too, came from outside the system and genuinely seemed to care not for the office but for serving his country. (And I love flip charts, haha.) I didn't agree with everything these guys espoused, for sure. But they weren't your typical career political yes-men who are more beholden to the survival of their party than to the health and prosperity of the nation.

And, you're right BOO; a liar is a liar, no two ways about it. It doesn't matter which party, or what the "good" reason--the wrong thing is the wrong thing. I'm not insinuating anything; as I said before, I'm not about to call Bush a liar.

January 24, 2007 - Msg 48880: Boy, I love the conversation here on the porch. Wish I were not so ingnorant of politics so I could moulage with you about it.

Ok, Spot and Me-They. As of now, the house is one-story except for a possible bonus room upstairs that we will finish ourselves. So, we are looking at about 3100sf, minus the bonus room if we finish it. The first floor will consist of kitchen/dining room combined as one large open area, an arched opening from that area into the family room. Each of those will have 9ft ceilings and the family room will have a built-in bookcase and a stone fireplace. The back of the family room will have french doors opening onto the back patio and large windows along the back wall looking onto the patio and backyard. The kitchen also is against the back wall of the house with large windows above the sink which look out into the backyard. There will be a mudroom/laundry that will be next to the kitchen with a door that opens onto the back patio. There will be a master bedroom that opens onto the family room and it will have a bathroom and walk-in closet. The kids will each have a room and they will share a bathroom between the two rooms. I have decided to put in a 48" shower with a shower seat instead of the standard bathtub/shower because I despise cleaning bathtubs! I do want to put a jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom but that's it. The kids bath will also have a linen closet and double-sink vanity. The kids rooms have built in desk areas and walk-in closets. There will be a small study/computer room off the dining area that will have french doors from the dining area into the study. Also we will have a guestroom with a guest bath because we think there is a good possibility that we will have elderly parents living with us at some point, so everything will be handicap access and there will be a shower with a seat in that bathroom. That's about it for the inside. The outside will be white Hardy Plank with large windows and a front porch across the front with pillars and rails. The foundation of the house that is visible above ground (about 2 feet) will be bricked with red brick of some sort. Have not decided on the roof yet, whether shingle or metal or color?? The back patio will be covered and that's all I can think of to tell you unless you have specific questions. I would be happy to answer them if you do.

January 24, 2007 - Msg 48890: Good afternoon, all. Just got up from a long nap, and feel much better. I'm ready to face the rest of the week now. Last night was a long shift, but two of my patients were so nice and so sweet, they made it feel worthwhile.

I love beets! Any way you fix 'em! My mother used to make a tangy orange glaze and put it over tiny whole beets, or bigger ones chunked up. Yum! Actually, I love all veggies. Can't think of a one I won't eat. I like some better than others, but wouldn't refuse any of them.

Me-They, I'm part-way with you on the mayo thing. It's not my favorite thing. Love MW, but don't care much for mayo. It doesn't have any real taste, it's just sorta, well, slick.

I had cold cuts left over Saturday night's party, and tonight I'll have a lightly-toasted, split croissant, with a little honey Dijon mustard, a lot of very rare, very thin-sliced roast beef, lettuce and tomatoes with salt and pepper. What a sandwich! I might even have two - the croissants aren't all that big.

January 24, 2007 - Msg 48898: Boo, the ep you are talking about is "The Inspector". The one where that inspector comes to town to observe Andy and Barney. I love that one. The part you are remembering is when Andy is talking to the inspector about a magazine he doesn't subscribe to anymore (or something to that effect), the Policemans Monthly, or some such thing. And as an aside to the inspector he says "I had to quit taking it. It had a lot of girlie pictures you see, and well, Barney, he's never been married." I think that's the one you are talking about.

Boo, the house plans sound great. I understand what you're saying about keeping the cost down, but let me just say this. When my husband and I built this house in 1973, my dad was the builder, and he wanted to make the house a bit bigger than it is. He wanted to put four more feet across the whole back of the house, but we refused, because it was going to add $50 a month to the payment! That doesn't sound like much now, but that's just the point. In a few years, the extra dollars now won't seem like much, and those four extra feet would have made the master bedroom closet and bathroom much bigger, as well as the office where my desk is located, the dining end of the kitchen and the sunroom - all would have been much nicer. Don't just focus on what you can do today. If you can, bite the bullet just a bit harder and go for it. In later years, you might be very glad you did. Just a thought...

Well, the Plum wants to cuddle, so guess I'd better go make a lap for her. Since I worked the last two nights, she's a bit clingy tonight. Little velcro doggie.

It's 38 degrees again here this morning and I love it. I'm glad there is no ice to deal with, though. I have been enjoying wearing my sweats for a change. Usually down here in the winter we start off the day in warm clothes and have to change by noon.

Thanks for your thoughts on the building. I had not considered that...something to think about. I think that the square footage we are talking about would be fairly minimal and if we do decide to finish the upstairs room we will have plenty of room, I think.

Well, I hear the kids arguing at the kitchen table. They seem to be rather cranky this morning!

We are planning to adopt a dog. Believe it or not, we are considering adopting a 10-year-old c*cker spaniel. After having three senior dogs pass away over the last few years we surprised ourselves, but it seems like the right thing to do. He sounds great so we all hope it goes well. Nora can barely contain her excitement.
