January 21, 2007 - Msg 48749: Good Sunday morning, porch friends! Thanks for all the prayers....I know they help. I'm up early to be sure to be up to early church this morning. My minister, Al, (he insists I call him Al) comes for lunch at the restaurant every Monday with several other preachers. If I miss church he makes a big fuss and worries about me. Such a great comfort to know I have my whole church (and several others) praying for me. How could it NOT help? I thank the lord for all my blessings.

WELCOME TO Lucy Moments...btw, I use aveeno oatmeal soap and bath too, my skin is very sensitive right now. It really is good stuff.
Au2o, the snow sounds nice....we had 70 degree temps a week ago, and a "wintry mix" yesterday and today. The kids really want some "real snow" this year.
Mary Wiggins, the cancer center where I get my chemo is similar to the place you describe....The infusion room has about 25 chairs,usually mostly full. I sit in an area close to about 3 other chemo chairs. When I first had chemo, 3 1/2 years ago, I had to sit there for five or six hours at a time. I had 16 rounds of that, using three different drugs. Then I took a lot of different pills and shots for a several months. But this time the actual chemo, while more frequent, takes much less time. I go 2 consecutive Wednesdays for an hour and a half or so, the the "off" Wednesday I see the oncologist. Since I'm there every week, I do see the same people alot. A few have died since I started this round in August. There's this cop who is there every week...in full uniform, gun, radio on, looking very imposing, sitting in a chemo chair with tubes out his chest. Most of us, like myself have a port in the chest where they "plug us in" for chemo. It's funny how it can get to be routine. Anyway, end of this month I get scanned again to see what the cancer is doing, and they'll adjust or change my chemo based on that. I don't plan on the chemo ending, but thanks for the good thoughts. I'm just dandy, all things considered.
Well! as slow as I type these days, I just realized I've been here almost an hour! I better go get some breakfast going.....

I had that particular teenage tragedy myself, though by the sound of it not as bad. Back in the 80s, they pumped you full of antibiotics (oral and topical). I took prescribed antibiotics for two full years! Glad they have better treatments nowadays.

January 21, 2007 - Msg 48762: Here I am (finally) - surely a sight for ya'lls sore eyes. ; ) I know it's been a while since I've stopped by and I've kinda hit and missed through the archives a bit. Since I've been here last we've celebrated Christmas out of state, been sick as dogs, Hubby has had nose surgery and recovered from that just in time to start putting in 16 hour days at the utility since we'd had that ice storm hit a week ago Friday, and our power was out for 5 days. Thought we were gonna get hit pretty good again last night but we only got a dusting of snow and a little bit of freezing rain. We maxed out on about 71% of the customers on our utility being out of power and are now down to about 13%. Say a prayer for the folks without power and the thousands of utility and tree workers in the midwest if you get a chance.

Good to see some new faces - and some old ones as well (Hey to pipeman - glad to see you stopped by fairly recently). Prayers for all the needs mentioned as of late and praises for the goodness of God to us all.

M-T: How are you and yours all doing? Is Miss Veda letting the Mrs. get more sleep these days? Hard to believe our girls are six months old now. Reagan went for her checkup Thursday and she is 24ญญ 3/4 inches long and weighs 12 lbs even. She only gained 6 oz and a half inch in the last 2 months. She is starting to hoist her rear end a little in an effort to get around, so I'm guessing it won't be too long til she's creeping instead of rolling everywhere she wants to go.

January 21, 2007 - Msg 48767: Hey, hey, AFD! Glad to hear little Reagan is doing so well. Yes, prayers for all those in the cold and the dark. It really makes you think about how much we take for granted.

Veda is doing wonderful. It's terrible, but I don't know her height and weight even though teh Mrs. took her to her 6 month checkup just last week and probably told me. (Well, I am a guy, y'know.) I do remember, however, that she is 75% for height and 25% for weight, so maybe you can figure it out. Mothers are good at calculating stuff like that. She loves to sit up and play, but seems to have no real desire to roll. She is hitting all her other developmental marks, though, and seems quite bright and engaging so we're not too worried. The way she bounces she'll probably go straight to running. She babbles quite a bit when the mood strikes, too. Nora was said her first word, which was "mommma" at six months, as did Chad--his was "dada"--so we are waiting with baited breath to see which one of us will be more popular :). With Chad around so much, though, I'm betting her first word wil be "stop it!" Actually, the kids love her to death and do very well with her. Absolutely no jealousy issues, either. We are blessed.

SPOT: I do fundraising and bean counting for a mid-size non-profit, historical organization. They have two museums, a research library, and a number of educational programs. One of the museums is open in the afternoon on Sundays, so the entire staff takes turns babysitting so the museum staff doesn't always have to work Sundays. Volunteer docents give teh actual tours so we just basically unlock, watch the monitors, and catch up on deskwork. It's not too bad, but it really breaks up the day and I don't like it. We have one staff member who won't work on Sundays because of religious convictions. I've always been torn about; I hate to work (I'm not in an essential job by any stretch), but if I didn't everybody else would have to more often. So my not working would cause other to work since they aren't about to stop the Sunday hours. Anyway, that's what I do.

DWF: Prayers for you at this time. I know it's not easy.

Nowadays, the hospital offers weekend option with a higher pay scale, and we have almost enough people working that option so that the rest of us don't have to. Once in a while, but not very often.

AFD, it's nice to see you again. Don't stay away so long next time, we miss you. I'm glad that little doll is doing well. Send me some pictures for the album!

DSF, I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. We were all hoping that the news would be good. I guess that's the problem with loving our little furkids like we do. Unfortunately, their lives tend to be relatively short, and it surely does hurt to lose them. I look at the Plum, twelve years old now, and can't imagine life without her, but I know it's coming. She's healthy and vital right now, but that can and will change, I know. I'm going to need you folks when that happens. Prayers for you, Deputy Warren. Hang in there.

January 21, 2007 - Msg 48778: Thanks to all of you who are telling me what you know about acne and cures. Lucy, I'm sure Aveeno is a fine product. I also believe Mary Kay's Velocity, Melaleuca's gold bar, and Proactive are good products. They just weren't cutting it for his serious acne. Nor were antibiotics--Me-They, they still try that course of treatment first and he was on them for two years. So, since he's already scarring and I just don't want more of that, we've opted to try the acutane. I've had many people trying to put my fears to rest that there kids have lived through it with wonderful results. My husband and I just decided we didn't want him looking at us when he's 30 and asking us why we didn't at least try it. So... that's my story. Being a parent is so difficult. Millie, you're such a blessing. I'm sure you don't always feel like being positive, but thank you for it! My husband has a new job that's going quite well. The other day, however, he was not having the greatest sales. He stopped by to visit our preacher and told him he just wasn't having a great day and asked if maybe he could help him to quit whining and make him feel better. Our preacher said, "Well, I just got done feeding a guy whose MS is so bad he can't hardly swallow and isn't sure the food will stay down. How's your day now?" Good point. Take care, porch people.

Of course, Hal Linden was wonderful as Barney. Truly a classic show. I wish TV Land would pick it up. I'm sorry Ron Carey is gone. He was great as the big little cop, Levitt.

To #48782, did you have a lot of "!" in your post? Sometimes the censor will zap a post with a series of repetitions in it. That's to stop somebody with limited smarts who thinks it's funny to fill a page with a series of letters or symbols. Two will make it, sometimes three, but more than that will usually get zapped. The comment about "offensive to Mayberry folks" is a standard response, not specifically tailored to your particular post. Grab yourself a Mayberry name, pull up a rocker and join us. Boy MDC, I wish my brother could travel on down to your place to help you with those ceiling fans. He helped me install mine, lickety-split(well, ok, he did pretty much all of the installing; I just basically held up the fan)!

Well, my warehouse job ended last week. No word on the job I interviewed for yet, but I am still hopeful.
I'm kinda glad I don't have to work this week because I'm actually not feeling too well, though I am wondering if it is real or imagined.
Got a sore throat and just plain tired feeling, but no fever to speak of. Also a rash on parts of my arms, legs, and chest, which started not long after I started the warehouse job(which made me think it was due to the sometimes wet conditions at work). But I do wonder if it is all stress related.
Now, I've dealt with alot of stress before(just ask MDC ;)), but I have just been feeling increasing dread over this vacation in Hawaii with my wife's family that we are going on later this week. Yeah, I know... I am probably the only guy in Wisconsin who doesn't have any desire whatsoever to go to Hawaii in winter. Well, I wouldn't mind going... on a boat. But on a plane?. No thanks.
It seems so strange to say that, because I always loved flying, before. Though this will be my first flight since 9/11, you see, and I never thought I would find myself going anywhere on a plane again.
Now, I don't know if I am being paranoid or just a realist, but I don't think flying in this climate is very safe. Yes, I realize that thousands of planes have been flying everywhere without incident, but I also think you could very well find yourself at the wrong place and at the wrong time. It just depends on if the terrorists decide it is time to carry out their plan, and I do believe they are planning, and just waiting for the right time. So getting on a plane is kind of like a cr@p-shoot, in my view. Now, my wife has said I don't have to go, but if Kai is going, I'm going. I'm not going to let her first(congnisant) plane ride be without me. I don't relish the thought of her going through a plane crash without me being there, though I also don't relish the thought of seeing her die in one. Not that that is going to happen, mind you, but like I said, it is a like a cr@p-shoot.
Now, even if and when we get back to the mainland safely once this "vacation" is over, I will still have the same view on air travel. That we just got lucky that time.
As you can probably tell, I don't have a lot of confidence in commercial airlines.
Geeze, remember when you only had to worry about the plane breaking up with some mechanical failure?! That never got me really worried about flying. I figured the airlines would not want to jeopardize their income by using shoddy equipment(well, most airlines anyway), though now with the cost-cutting they have to do due to having to have more security; delays; gas prices; etc, you never know what they are trying to scrimp savings out of.
What makes me even more cautious is that we are flying out of the same airport where those "imams" had their little beef with US Airways just a couple months ago, if you remember that. Unfortunately we are not using US Airways. I wish we were. At least I know that they put passenger safety above political correctness, and kicked those guys with their suspicious behaviour, out. I hope our flight(s) have the same kind of vigilant people, and crew. I know I'll be keeping my eyes open.
Yeah, I wish I could be excited about this trip, but I just can't. To me it is just stupid.

Well, thus ends my latest rant. I'd better put my paranoia/the soapbox under the porch for now.

January 22, 2007 - Msg 48795: Hello everyone, I am back from retreat and back to the old routine. I skimmed over the archives and was so sorry to hear about Warren's cat. Hope Warren is doing ok.

MAVIS, good to see you on the porch. Prayers for your tests tomorrow and to answer your above question, I have never had any problem after getting the waffle iron (mammorgram). It's a snap and you should be able to go right to work afterward...maybe just a little soreness if you have cysts...my advice is to take an Advil an hour prior to the mammogram.

Well, I hear Bruce draggin himself through the kitchen. He is going to try to go back to work tomorrow if he can. He is moving around better but is very sore and still having pain in his back (not as severe, though). Thanks to you all for the prayers.

I had a restful weekend at camp but it sure was stressful deciding to go. I didn't tell ya'll about it but about an hour before I left, Sean called me from school saying he almost blacked out during one of his classes. I had to pick him up and watch him for awhile. I think it was a combination of his meds, the cold meds I had given him and the 2 cokes he confessed to drinking at lunch!! He knows he isn't allowed to drink cokes but gave in to temptation. Anyway, he scared me but he was fine all weekend.

I had a paranoia of flying long before 9-11. I have had an irrational fear of flying for many years and don't know why it started. I used to fly with no problem, then I had bad dream about crashing when I was a young adult and since then, I panic on airplanes so I avoid them like the plague. I have been thinking about seeing the therapist about it and maybe trying some therapy to get over it so I can fly in the future. I have not been on an airplane since I was 25. Anyway, I know about the anxiety you are feeling and I would, like you, want to stay home but wouldn't dare let my kids go without me. Prayers that God will give you peace in the situation. You might just have a surprisingly good time....

STERLING: I know how you feel about the anxiety (trust me, I know how you feel). Concern for things that can happen is healthy; fear of things that in all likelihood will not happen is not. The truth is flying is safer statistically than driving or going by train. Not sure about the boat thing. While I share this particular anxiety myself (I used to have absolutely no problem flying), along with a number of others, try and give it to the Lord. You have my prayers. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time and never regret that you had this opportunity. Kai won't either.

HOMEMAKER: Living so close to Baltimore and growing up a Colt's fan, please try to keep the name Irsay out of it! Around here, that could still get you mobbed.

AUH2O: I loved Barney Miller, too. Remember Inspector Lugar? TV Land used to run it so maybe they'll do a marathon or something soon as a memorial.

BOO: Glad to hear it. I just got the washer and dryer hooked back up so you can take a break from my laundry. I appreciate all your help keeping me in shorts. It's a dirty job, but I'm glad someone stepped forward to do it.

CHARLOTTE: If he does take the antibiotics, keep your family doctor informed. You shouldn't take them for extended periods without giving the body breaks and monitoring their levels in the blood. I remember that when my family doctor found out I had been taking them for almost two years and the dermotologist hadn't sent me for periodic blood tests at least he almost flipped.

Sterling, I feel so bad for you to be so tormented over this. I guess my best advice would be to pray about this trip and trust God to see you through. He promises us peace that passes all understanding so my prayer is that He grants it to you and you find this trip refreshing, restorative, and invigorating!

Congratulations to all the Colts and Bears fans. I will be rooting for the Colts, (nothing personal Chicago fans)!

Charlotte, I know my daughter did the years and years of antibiotics, also. She also tried pro-active and everything else under the sun. It was so hard to watch her go through the time, she was always a stunning girl, truly model material, but she started getting horrible cysts and terrible breakouts. I would see some people begin to recoil at her sometimes! It was awful. She was on the accutane for I believe 5 months, which was longer than they originally planned. I will have to ask her to be certain. You may know they need to go through quite a regimen to be on accutane, I believe she even had to keep a log and I am not sure what all was involved. She finished the program last fall and has not had anymore cysts or outbreaks. She still has some scarring, but being female she can use makeup to conceal it. She went far too many years trying to battle this disease! She is 25 now! I guess they will do dermabrasion and some kind of bleaching and other things to help with the scarring she still has. This will not be an easy program for your son, but if his problem is anything like my daughter's was, I would encourage you to see it through and be on guard for him.

Speaking of my daughter...We threw her a bridal shower yesterday and all went well! She got loads of gifts and she looked stunning! I was very happy for her. Now I have two sons at home, and I don't know if I will be as involved in the marriage plans someday, so I really enjoyed this one!

Millie, hang in there, you are awesome!!

January 22, 2007 - Msg 48806: Thank for your prayers for my daughter. She is doing fine--or as good as she can be now. Got her stateside driver's licence and has almost enough saved up for a car. She is coming to see me on spring break with one of her girlfriends
She has to wait because her friend has a teaching job and can't get off until then. She's starting college in the fall--my girl i mean--and she is working on getting a real estate licence at the moment.
I think she is going to leave the romance stuff alone for a while and concentrate on her career.
I think it's a good idea.

I'll admit to a little hesitation about it myself right after 9/11, but not enough to keep me from going somewhere I wanted to go. All I can say is this - think it through, read the statistics, and then if you're still afraid it will happen to you, go buy a lottery ticket, because you're sure to win! I would imagine the odds are pretty close to the same. (teehee) Seriously, no disrespect meant, fears are fears, no matter how irrational they may be. When my children were small I'd get up at least twice every night and go through the house, sniffing for gas leaks or smoke. Go figure.

It's a beautiful sunny day here, and I'm getting the itch to go out and plant something! It's still too early, though, so guess I'll have to just content myself with doing some pruning instead.

January 22, 2007 - Msg 48810: Yep, it's not planting time here yet either. I do need to get that pruning done, though, or the roses will start to bolt, and then we'll have a cold spell and I'll have to prune off all the new growth they put on. I usually have fresh herbs here and there in the flowerbeds, but about all that's out there right now is rosemary, and you can't kill that stuff with a stick. I've got two stands of it, each about three feet tall and at least that wide. Here in Texas, rosemary is sometimes grown for a hedge! Pretty, too. In the spring, I'll tuck a little dill and chives and basil in around the flowers, and it makes a nice surprise.
I'm not real big on house plants, since they usually shed leaves and make a mess. Right now, I have two bouganvilleas - 1 small, 1 huge - in the sunroom to winter over. Those things shed like a cheap fur coat. I'm forever sweeping up leaves, but in return, they're blooming and are quite pretty. I have that enormous plumeria in there, too, and it drops leaves. However, its leaves are large and leathery, and easy to pick up.

I gotta work tonight, yuck. Sure wish I could retire, but just can't afford it yet. Oh, I could, if I was willing to give up my home and yard and move into something tiny and cheap, but I'm not willing, so guess I'll keep working. There's a price to pay for everything, I guess.
