P-H...Good thoughts about the song lyrics. A lot of that goes on in song writing even today. Put just enough "sugar" on it to be appealing. It's kinda like putting chocolate on a cricket and calling it a fancy feast.... well you can put all the chocolate in the world on it but to me it's still a BUG. That's the way I believe the enemy uses music.....put just enough to be appealing. Now don't missunderstand me...I listen to other things beside Christian music. I like oldies, 70's, country, etc.. But I believe some songs have hidden messages that is rooted in New Age. That's just my thoughts.

January 03, 2007 - Msg 48225: PH is probally right on Lennon's writing of "Imagine", but if you listen to the song the way it is and how the lyric's actually are instead of how the song was INTENDED to be written, the message is still the same, or at least I think so.

January 03, 2007 - Msg 48227: Well, words aside, I think the music and the way Lennon sings it is very pretty. I dig just about anything the beatle did...(notice the 70's lingo...just threw that in for interest. Groovy, huh?).

Auh2o, your girls remind me of my sister and I. She was 5 years older but it was just the two of us after I turned 5 and we have always been the best of buddies. My brother in law still says we're joined at the hip. Sounds strange but I think he's jealous. Anyway, I hope your girls remain close because if they do it will be one of the most rewarding things in life. When I hear Mavis talk about how her sister treats her it just makes me want to cry because I know what she is missing, especially now that her mom has gone on to be with the Lord.

Warren, I hope you don't feel picked on and will continue to share your feelings with us anytime. I care about you and your opinions and want you to feel free to express them.

January 03, 2007 - Msg 48229: Just finished the article, Aua2o, loved it, especially the part about God being replaced by state in Europe. It goes right along with something I heard on the radio today. They were discussing a book which I didn't get the name of but the author was talking about the spread of Islam in Europe and that because of the selfish nature of many Europeans and their rejection of religion, they have stopped having children (too much expense and trouble) while the Islamic are having many, hence, Islam is rapidly growing. Interesting. Romeena, if you are reading this, I think you would really like the article Auh2o posted. It reminds me of many things you have said about the welfare system.

Well, I have talked enough. You people need a break.

January 03, 2007 - Msg 48230:

DWF, I think John Lennon had good intentions with "Imagine" too. I understand the "imagine there's no heaven" passage. I've always perceived it to be a reference to the bad that's done "in the name of God" by misguided people. It's a shame the way His name has been misused to justify oppression and abuse. Some of the kindest hearted people I've ever known were/are agnostics or even athiests, but even though they're gentle people, I have to admit to worrying about them and praying for them. That said, I have no doubt that there are folks who do the right thing, religion notwithstanding; some folks are just decent inside. I truly believe, however, that faith in God keeps us on the right track and keeps us trying to do what's right and good.

Well, Christmas break is over and the little darlings head back to school tomorrow. I really enjoy it when they're home, but I know they get cabin fever! At this age, they really need to be with their friends. Just because their old mom is content to be a hermit doesn't mean they are! I remember all too well what it was like to be in high school. Sure is hard watching them become adults, though. Their first driving lesson was a few nights ago... oh my! Who here has been through that? How did you handle it? I can't even begin to imagine watching them drive off all by themselves in a car...

January 03, 2007 - Msg 48231: I was going to shut up for the night but after I read DES's post I wanted to share something with her. I used to think alot about "good" people vs. "bad" people, because as you said, there are some very nice people who don't claim to be Christians (and some nasty ones who do!). I was thinking about what I was like, myself before becomming one. If you had known me you would have said I was a nice, caring girl who basically did what my parents told me to and was kind to animals, etc., but the truth is, I remember what I was really like on the inside. I was doing most of the right things on the outside but was pretty hateful on the inside. I was very angry and if someone treated me badly I really hated them. There was no idea or desire to forgive anyone, my motive was revenge. I had a dark heart, that's for sure and I remember wanting to do wrong when I could get away with it. I was afraid of getting caught but had no joy in doing right. Did I also do some good things, and did I love certain people? Of course I did, but I am a much different person now than I was then, thank God. I think the regeneration of the soul is a mystical thing that we can't understand fully but it is the difference between a true Christian and those who aren't. It makes us different, even though we don't always act that way. When I think back, though, and it's been a long time, I am so thankful to God for taking my dark heart and making it new. From the day I was born again, besides the joy I felt, that was the thing that changed the most; I didn't hate anymore. Praise the Lord...it's so much better this way. Thank you Jesus.

Goodnight,
Boo

The clenched fists, rapid heartbeat, huge lump in my throat. And that's before you get in the car. The time I spent pottering around our neighborhood when they had their learners permit was nothing compared to when they take the folks on a road trip on the freeway. I found myself smiling apologetically out my window to passing cars, wondering if they could feel my pain. Anyway, I got thru it. Both my kids turned out to be good drivers, and 8 and 10 years later they still are good drivers. My therapy sessions ended long ago and everything worked out in the end.
I like the song Imagine.

I know what you mean about the connection you and your sister have my wife and her sister have the same type of relationship. It's scary how they seem to know what's going on without even having to speak to each other.

I am glad you liked the article. About the spread of Islam in Europe, I have heard some political commentators make similar statements about Liberal familles in an America, abortion is sighted as one of the reasons that Liberal families tend to be smaller than Conservative families.

Lucy-I hope they're Daddy's girls people tell me they are. I know they mean the world to me. Lots of nephews but no sons. You're right about them being at pivotal ages but all appears to be going well.

DWF-I really appreciate the sprite that was intended with your Imagine post. Thanks again for taking the time to share that with us.

January 04, 2007 - Msg 48237: Good morning everyone. Another day of beautiful weather here, which is really starting to freak me out; it should be cold. Sorry I was AWOL yesterday, but I stayed home to take care of a sick baby and very, very tired momma. Tired, crying babies don't mix so well with moms who haven't slept in 24 hours. All are doing much better today.

About the M*A*S*H discussion, I understand MILLIE's discomfort about it's seemingly anti-American attitude but I agree completely with ROMEENA's comments. (I also with agree with BOO that it's just plain funny.) The only thing I can add is that it's not anti-American to question and care about life, but it would be not to "do one's duty." That's what the surgeons on teh show did; they never walked away from doing their duty, no matter how much they disagreed with the war. And, on another level, even though soldiers see death and destruction all around them in war, imagine the constant parade of carnage that battlefield surgeons must endure. Surely that would effect all but the most dense (i.e., Frank Burns). I definietly don't recommend the show for kids because of the adult themes but I still enjoy watching it every once in awhile. Oh, yeah, I hated the movie, too: offensive and not funny.

Again, thanks for all your comments on my recent thoughts. All your comments are valued. Even yours, AUH2O ;) (and no offense taken).

I was really into the Beatles when I was in high school, had all their recording and read alot about them. I since sort of feel out of love with their music but still enjoy it from time to time. "Imagine" kind of disturbed me, too. But, I always was more of a McCartney fan anyway. I did have Lennon's "Double Fantasy" album (his last) and loved it. Of course, I had to skip every other song on it (every other song was done by Yoko Ono). That women may have talent in some area, but it's certainly not music. They couldn't even play that stuff at Guantanamo Bay.

AUH2O and DES: While I personally enjoy being around "good people," I think BOO hit on something in her nighttime post last night. Although there is human virtue in kind acts, there is no eternal salavation; that is offered as a gift. It's interesting that you regard your professor as a "devout" (or was that "devoted?") atheist, AUH2O; atheism, in it's own way, is just like a religion.

Well, I could go on, and on...and on...but work calls. And it sounds just like my boss. I stop back later.

That, and "Little House on the Prarie," are her favorite shows. I don't have a problem at all with either of them. Even the "Brady Bunch" has wholesome themes of honesty, respecting your parents, etc. I gotta tell you, it is kind of refreshing to watch a family comedy where the father is not a joke who is ridiculed by his family and is actually portrayed as respected and thoughtful. So, when she pops it in, I grit my teeth and think, she could be begging me to watch any number of other contemporary sitcoms.

You made me think of something that happened the other day with Erin. Sometimes I allow her to watch Disney Channel in her room, unsupervised (bad idea), and she was talking about "That's So Raven"...she was pretending to be Raven and said, "I'm having a vision". Well, that got my attention and I asked her, "Why would you say that?" and she replied (very casually) "Raven's a psyhcic (don't know how to spell it)". I told her I was sorry but she couldn't watch it and explained a little about what the bible teaches. Well, last night she came and told me Raven was on and could she watch it just one more time. I was proud of her for asking my permission but had to say no and offered to play a game with her instead. Now, it really bugs me that I would have to worry about what my child watches on Disney Channel and why is there a witch character in Dora the Explorer?

Sorry that you have found us wanting, Mr. C. Like has been said, we try to be okay people. And no one here would take such a magazine ("Barney!" "Well, there are some good articles in there.") By the way, have you seen Potsie?

AUH2O: My favorite Twain quote is about Jane Austen, for whom we share an opinion (sorry all you Austen fans): "Every time I read 'Pride and Prejudice' I want to dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone." Another Twain quote that makes you think: "There has been only one Christian; they caught him and crucified him--early." The man had an insightful wit.

M-T Potsie? What about Chuck? He went to his room and never came out. Of course, I am speaking of the Cunningham's Chuck and not our Chuck here on the Porch.

I love that Twain quote, about Austen, but I wonder, why does he say "every time I read 'Pride and Prejudice'..." why so many times if he doesn't care for it or is that not why he wants to beat her.

homemaker-"The Walton's" are another favorite here. My youngest asked me, awhile back, why they don't make show "new ones" of "The Walton's" and "Little House"? When I told her that those shows were hits when I was a kid and that there hasn't been "new ones" for years, she didn't believe. Then she asked why nobody makes shows like that now. I told her I don't know why. Wouldn't it be great to be able and sit with your kids and watch something new like those old shows. Maybe something old could be new again.

AUH2O: Regarding Twain's opinion of Austen, these other quotes from him clears up any misunderstandings: "Jane Austen? Why I go so far as to say that any library is a good library that does not contain a volume by Jane Austen. Even if it contains no other book." Discussing another author, "To me his prose is unreadable--like Jane Austen's. No there is a difference. I could read his prose on salary, but not Jane's. Jane is entirely impossible. It seems a great pity that they allowed her to die a natural death." Finally, "I haven't any right to criticise books, and I don't do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticise Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy...."

Sorry so verbose today.

You can really see the visual difference when you what episodes back-to-back. So this is Xmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Xmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Xmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas
And what have we done
Another year over
A new one just begun
And so happy Xmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
War is over, if you want it
War is over now

Happy Xmas

The song is from the album "Shelter From The Storm" by PowerSource, a Bedford, Texas-based evangelical youth chorus featuring nine-year-old soloist Sharon Batts.

January 04, 2007 - Msg 48275: KY Girl, you mentioned Ozzie and Harriet. I watched an old Chrismtas episode of that and it was hilarious! I was really surprised by it...it reminded me alot of TAGS.

Thanks for giving us the lyrics to the song, Warren. I was touched by what you said because just last night when I went to bed, it was colder than usual and I had a chill. I slipped into bed and the sheets were cold and I was miserable for a little while. I turned on my electric heating pad and pulled it under the covers with me, grumbling about how I wish it was an electric blanket instead. No sooner was that thought in my head than I felt ashamed for complaining. I had a distinct picture pop into my mind of the homeless trying to keep warm inside of cardboard boxes or huddled up in alleys in the city. It's painful to think about but we need to think about it...and may it never stop being painful. I don't know about the rest of you but I have really been thinking alot about the conversation here lately and am going to spend less on frivolous things and try to give and serve more in this new year.

I have a quote for my friends tonight (it's not from Calvin Coolidge): "Weak minds discuss people. Average minds discuss events, but great minds discuss ideas." I think we have some great minds here on the porch!

January 04, 2007 - Msg 48280: Evenin' Porch,
Auh20- I'm glad that you are so close to your daughters! All girls need strong male influences in their lives.
Me-They- The Carter book is called "Sharing Good Times". He's talking about his life experiences such as being a naval officer, Father, politician, and stories about their vacations. It is a light-hearted look at his life. I love hearing his South Georgia accent tell the stories.
Mr. C- Are you a former porchster?
Homemaker- My boys love hee haw since it's on CMT. Nick, the 12 year old, thinks he's Johnny Cash so he's always on the lookout for him.
Nick's Mom once called us Amish because we only have very basic cable, eat organic food, take vitamins, and censor the radio and tv. I just said that well, we'd have to be mennonites since we drive a car and have the tv! The way I look at it we only have 1 chance to raise our children. If we mess that up then we've failed the biggest gift the Lord gave us. Did you know that every violent act that kids see up to age 14 it actually alters the brain? Their brains are scarred for life from watching COPS one time. Nick was watching one of the 007 movies and Bond hit a woman across the face. Now Nick thinks if James Bond, the coolest guy on the planet, thinks it is acceptable to hit girls maybe Nick will. Bryson will actually turn the channel on the tv or radio if he "feels bad" about something because he's young and sensitive. I'm still extremely sensitive, to the annoyance of hubby. Keep your kids far far away unless you know that you know that the show or song is acceptable.
Time for bed. Y'all take care!
Blessings,
~Lucy

January 04, 2007 - Msg 48281: ...guess I would qualify as Mennonite, too, by that definition Lucy. That is very scary about the violence that kids are exposed to. I know they have a real danger of becoming de-sensitized to it and that is too horrible to imagine.

I am NOT a Hee Haw fan. As a child I hated Hee Haw almost as much as Lawrence Welk. I sure like Johnny Cash, though.

Asa, you are hilarious...so clever. You should use that last post of yours in your act down at the Gigolo Club.

Havent seen much here on NeW Year RESOLUTIONS!
Mine is to do some "Kingdom" living.! THE King in any earthy kingdoms past, owned everything! (As does our Father in His Kingdom.)
We are stewards of those things. "To whom much is given, much is required" etc. The king provides for all, but there were bad kings and there were GOOD kings. A good king provided well.
This thinking goes back to when we discussed the young man who had many possessions, and could not part with them, but in Kingdom living, God owns it all and provides our need.
Praise the true and living God!
Prayers for all,

January 05, 2007 - Msg 48301: Well Mr. C...after 5 or 6 years, you find that you have to talk about something else at some point when you come here everyday. Also, it's really hard to build true friendships without sharing our lives and ideas about life. Mayberry is an important part of our lives, but not all of it. Hope you understand will consider joining in and telling us something about yourself.

No resolutions this year, MDC, just going to try to raise the bar on some things that are already in place.

January 06, 2007 - Msg 48315: hello mayberry happy new year .....dave

January 06, 2007 - Msg 48316: Good evening, all. I just finished my two 12-hr shifts, am off now until Monday and Tuesday nights. Came home and fell into bed and slept most of the day. Now I won't sleep tonight and will be sleepy in church tomorrow. Hmmm, something is wrong with this picture.

Tom, who is Mr. C.? I'm afraid I don't remember him, has he visited the porch before? I'm sorry he's not happy with the porch anymore, and perhaps he has a point - our discussions do get a bit heavy at times. However, as Boo pointed out, it's what good friends do when they get together - they discuss and share about the things that are on their minds. Perhaps we should try harder to put more "Mayberry" into our conversations, though.

"hey, let's meet at Andy's for choir practice but DON'T tell Romeena!" Well, thanks a lot, Boo! Are you implying that I can't sing? Huh? Huh? Huh? And if Hazel starts making faces when she's standing near me, she's gonna get a knob on her head! So there! Now - la-la-la-LA-la-la-laaaaa! (squirt, squirt) La-la-la-LA-la-la-laaaaa!

Sugarplum says oh, brother! --Romeena
