Trivia- did you know that Luke 2 states that the angels only SPOKE their announcement to the shepherds. We made them SING it with our hymns.
Christmas is getting close. The goose is getting fat. God bless you one and all.
MDC

December 19, 2006 - Msg 47892: You're right, MDC, but in my heart I just know that those angels had to be singing as well. As one of my favorite Christmas Pageant songs tells it:

That night, in all of Heaven, there wasn't a sound,
As God and the angels watched the earth.
For there in a stable, the Father's only Son
Chose to give Himself in human birth.

And when the cry of a baby split the universe
Once for all man was shown his worth.

And the heavens exploded, with music everywhere,
And the angels spilled over Heaven's edge and filled the air,
And the Father rejoiced, for He did not lose His Son
But He gained to himself forever those who'd come.

My all-time favorite, and unimaginably beautiful when performed by a full choir and orchestra. I wish you could all have heard it.

I'm still reeling from the wonderful news about Susan. I'll keep you posted on her progress.

Morning Folks

Me-They It's not that I don't mind sharing, it's just with what some of us having going on right now my little troubles seem kinda small. In a nutshell, my father-in-law is in very bad shape and most of the responsibility for what happens to him as fallen to my wife and me. This guy is a miserable old man and by all indications he was a miserable young man. However, we want to do what is right and the past is the past. So, we been meeting with lawyers, Doctors, and Nurses quite a bit (Medicaid, DNR's, DNI's and the such).

M-T I'll keep an eye out for Hillary's card like all her other gifts I'm sure it will come postage due!

Boo-A Texas gal caught in a snow storm! Hold on and have some fun, they can be fun too!

Lucy-I'll think we might be having a Green Christmas this year. We lost nearly all of our snowbase over they last week. They are calling for a bit of snow for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but it looks like they 2nd green one for me.

possum & spot-What happened to the "46 Club" now I'm all by myself!

I saved this one for last. It's good news! At my girls middle school they are actually having a Birthday Party for Jesus! Can you believe that? At a public school, in New York yet.

Floyd-Loved the card. Thanks for sharing.

December 22, 2006 - Msg 47934: Good afternoon everyone. It's raining here, too, and expected to continue through tomorrow morning. They say we're in for about two inches. It could be worse, though; we could be stuck in the Denver airport.

Notice how quiet it is around here with BOO around? Just joking!

Try as I might, I just can't seem to stay focused on work today. I'm in the Christmas spirit and this nine-to-five is crampin' my style. I may have to scoot out early today. We're done shopping and preparing, but we haven't wrapped a thing yet. That will probably fall to me tonight since the Mrs. worked last night and with all three kids at home I doubt she got much sleep today. I don't mind.

NPR played a great version of "A Christmas Carol" this afternoon. One actor did all the reading and was just marvelous. It was just about the best reading of it I have ever heard. Catch it online or in a repeat if you can.

Well, once out today I'm out until next Tuesday. So, in case I don't get the opportunity to stop back, I wish all my friends on the porch a blessed and very Merry Christmas! May your day be merry and bright.

December 22, 2006 - Msg 47941: Hey, all. Here's a note from my friend Susan's CarePage:

"Susan continues to improve. Her kidney functions are almost back to 100%. She is able to get out of bed and walk with me to the nurses station and back 3 times a day. Overall - we are rejoicing at how far she has come and the incredible improvement in her condition.

We PRAISE GOD for His healing touch and all the prayers that have been lifted to His throne by our friends and family. Thank you.

We are praying that the doctors will release her to come home on Saturday. Waiting on more lab reports.

Jerry"

Once again, I thank each of you for praying for her. What a wonderful group of friends you are, all of you.

My shopping is done, everything is wrapped, the house is clean enough, and now it's time to bake. Haven't baked a thing yet! I usually have the baking done by about the 18th, but sorta missed it this year! I may not do much, just some shortbread and a couple of batches of cookies and some scattermix. Wish I could have all of you over one evening, but since we can't do it in reality, guess we'll just meet here on the porch. Maybe someone could do a reading of the Nativity story from the Bible? I could probably recite it, as could most of us, I'm sure, but I love to hear it read, over and over. My favorite source is the King James, naturally, but some of the new translations are good, too. I'm partial to the New International. I prefer new translations to paraphrases, I think there is less risk of distortion of meaning, but some of the paraphrases are good too, like the Living Bible.

Well, guess I'll go get the butter out of the fridge so it can begin to soften, and the squirrels are peering in my window, wondering when I'm going to put out critter feed. Busy, busy, busy! Sugarplum says ho, ho, ho! --Romeena

December 22, 2006 - Msg 47942: Ha ha ha Romeena, you crack me up when you say the house is clean (and then add "enough").
I'm glad Susan is doing so well. Praises be.

Asa

December 22, 2006 - Msg 47943: Well, Mb>Asa, I'm glad you got a laugh out of that, but it's the truth. I used to be one of those housekeepers for whom "clean enough" didn't exist. There was always one more thing to be dusted, mop the floor once more, do laundry if more than three towels in the hamper - you know the drill. Finally, my husband taught me the value of "clean enough" - more time to spend with him, with the kids, doing fun things or just doing nothing. You know what? No one died from dirt, the laundry waited, and a quick swipe at the obvious spot on the kitchen floor was enough, didn't need to mop the whole thing. Now that he's gone, the things I remember are the fun things we did, not how clean and shiny the house was on any given day. So, clean enough is good enough, and my kids appreciate a less tired, more relaxed mom when we get together. My husband was so right. Martha Stewart might be appalled if she ran a white-glove inspection around here, but who cares? Not I! I just won't invite her over. --Romeena

December 22, 2006 - Msg 47944: Ha! When will I learn to proofread, especially my little "commands"? Asa, you should have been bold! --Romeena

December 22, 2006 - Msg 47945: HIS GIFTS

Lord, help me to use each day You give
Wisely, in ways You would have me to live...
Forgetting self but remember more
Those who are lonely, the suffering, the poor.
Let me lift them up in fervent prayer,
Reassuring them of You love and care.

Let me thank You for the beauty You bring
In Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring;
Each one with special beauty You wrought
And on angels wings to earth were brought.
No earthly artist could e'er compare
To all Your gifts, so rich and rare.

Oh, may I not take for granted all these gifts
That bless my heart and my spirit lifts...
A love that nourishes my body and soul,
Just knowing You're near and in control
Brings me joy, peace and tranquility,
And grace to always trust in thee.

December 23, 2006 - Msg 47961: Thanks!! Yes, Asa, I got enough snow for a little while (I still like it, though). It's cool and rainy here right now and I would rather have snow than rain. I had to drop by WalMart for some last minute things and there was a little old man parked next to me with a dead battery so I got my head all wet jumping his battery...wish it were snow instead. I think I have gotten everything I need but I have been staring at the suitcases piled in the living room and avoiding them. The family dinner was postponed until today at 2, then a church program to attend and then I will be up late wrapping the kid's presents....maybe I can talk Bruce into dealing with the suitcases (maybe we can make some kind of deal....no, never mind, it might require some effort on my part. ha).

Well, better scoot...lots to do...

Did any of you see the Nativity movie? I wanted to see it but still haven't.

I missed MISS PEGGY AND POOR HORATIO in my greeting, sorry, I'll probably think of more too!
FLOYD- I can indeed see the "floyd" in you. Now I know why you love to do that character.

I HAVE SOME FAIRLY GOOD NEWS regarding our mayor Colt. I finally got Mrs Colt on the phone and Colt has move to an apartment now. She gave me his address, but I do not want to post it here. So if you email me at dipper40 at hotmail dot com
I will give it to you. To refresh everyone, he had a minor stroke which altered his personality and he moved out of his house. I thought that if a lot of us wrote to him, it may help to jar his memory of us and other things.
His wife was very supportive of the idea, and also thanked us for our prayers.
So there is always HOPE! Thanks,
Merry Christmas!

December 23, 2006 - Msg 47965: Hey, ever'body, this is Gomer, checking in for probably the first time in about a year! For those of you who came to the party at some point after this site was established, I was a fairly regular poster for some time on the previous porch, which as you all know was set up by Frank.

I don't get to come to this Porch as often as I'd like, but do enjoy checking in from time to time just to say hello to whichever members of the old gang may still be hanging around -- Merle (HEY MERLE DEAN!), Rafe, Des, Leon, Romeena, Hazel, Briscoe, Otis, Goober, Lydia, and a whole bunch of others.

I'm not sure how many of those folks still check in on this-here Porch, but I wanted to throw a "hey" out there for those who are. And, of course, many thanks to those of you who have come along in the meantime, for doing such a great job of keeping a truly good thing going.

Everyone have a VERY Merry Christmas, and a wonderful 2007.

And -- oh, yeah -- "best of luck to you and yours!"

Merry Christmas to you, Gomer.

Thank you for the Christmas wish, MDC, and for checking up on Colt for us. Prayers for him and his wife (must be very difficult for her at this time of year).

Wonder if Millie is busy tonight? Hope her Christmas festivities are in full swing and things are good at the restraunt.

Well, it's time to start wrapping those gifts (groan).

December 24, 2006 - Msg 47971: Howdy, all, it's very late, or should I say very early here on this Christmas Eve. My son and his family were here, DIL's sister and her family, and her mom and dad as well. I fried pork chops and made gravy, we all ate too much but it was good. Guess that will be the extent of the Christmassing at my house, as we'll go to my son's tomorrow night, and to DIL's mom on Christmas Day. I guess family doesn't necessarily have to be born to you.

Sure was good to hear from Gomer, and surprising to read through the roll call as he listed it. Lots of folks have been missing for quite a while, it seems. Wish they'd come back to Mayberry, even just for a visit. Gome, don't be a stranger - come on home! I heard Goober is thinking about selling the station he bought from Wally - maybe he'd sell it to you.

Well, guess I'll turn in. I'm tired, and church services will come early in the morning. Merry Christmas, everyone! Sugarplum says ho, ho, ho! --Romeena

December 24, 2006 - Msg 47977: Merry Chrismtas everyone! I finally got those gifts wrapped and was into bed by 1am, then up for church this morning. The service was beautiful, the music wonderful. Also, one of my good friends, June, has a grown son that we have been praying for because he has always been very anti-Christian and this has caused my friend so much grief (and even guilt). Well, we had been praying for him each Wed. night at prayer meeting and he was in church with his wife this morning...I couldn't believe my eyes. I know what a special gift this was to his mother. You should have seen her smiling. Her eyes were just shining. It was like a Christmas miracle.

Bruce and I took the kids and 4 of their friends for pizza after church and then I came home for a short nap. The house is messy, but full of kids and lots of love. I am so thankful that I have family and friends and won't have to be alone at Christmas. I pray for those who do, may they feel the love and warmth of Jesus this Christmas season.

We have our Christmas Eve Service tonight at 6pm and then we go to my sister's house for food and time together. I am contemplating attending the 11pm candlelight service at the little Methodist church I grew up in...we'll see. I haven't been to church there in many years and always loved the candlelight service each Christmas Eve as I was growing up. It is one of those old, white churches with a big stained glass window of Jesus in the front, beautiful and just turned 100 years old this year.

Ro, I smiled at your comment about how family doesn't have to be born to you. How true that is! We had a "family" dinner with my nephew's in-laws yesterday and it was so much fun. They are the kind of folks who live in a mobile home with an old bathtub in the front yard and a rickety old porch and you would expect the inside of the house to be the same, but I am telling you that house was beautiful! It was like a Christmas wonderland in there. We enjoyed it so much and had a huge feast of Mexican food and chocolate cheesecake for dessert. It was a really nice time. After the dinner we all piled into our cars to go to a church program at their church but on the way, that winter storm slammed into us that went through Denver, I guess and it was cold with driving rain. When we got to the church, the power was out, so they sang a few carols by flashlight and took communion and sent us home. It was really pretty unique and memorable.

Well, I have talked your ear off and it's someone else's turn now (I guess Me-They was right about the porch being much quieter without me, ha).

Later Porch Family!

December 25, 2006 - Msg 47984: Well, Merry Christmas to one and all. Hazel, it's good to see you. And you too, Hodie. I hope you'll both come back right regular-like!

I went to the Christmas Eve service at church, the choir sang "That Night" (guess they finally dug up the sheet music somewhere) and as always, it brought tears. It was a Pageant song, always the entry of the kings, and I could just picture my handsome husband making his way down the aisle, robed in red velvet and wearing a crown, then at the final "amen" he would kneel at the manger, his pages would spread his beautiful train, and he would hold up a huge gold nugget, presenting it to Mary and Joseph. After the music would die away, he would rise and approach the manger, which of course held a real baby (about 4 months old), and a brief, informal moment of admiring the infant would close the scene. One year, the baby began to cry, perhaps frightened by the music, and my husband reacted like any experienced father would. He reached in, picked up the baby, who hushed crying, and cradling him in one arm, he turned to face the audience and more or less "presented" the baby to them. He reached to touch the baby's cheek, and the baby grabbed on to his finger and held on, making little cooing noises. Believe me when I tell you, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Six hundred people, all reaching for tissues. Those are the memories which that song recalls for me.

After services, we went out to my son's home and the two little grandsons got to open some packages, which is always fun to watch. Their excitement and enthusiasm, and dramatic reactions are just a joy to watch. The Plum went along, and joined right in the spirit of things. A good time was had by all.

And now to bed, and a peaceful night's sleep. Again, Merry Christmas, friends. Sugarplum says Peace on earth, good will toward all mankind. --Romeena

December 25, 2006 - Msg 47988: Hazel! So good to see you on the porch...Merry Christmas to you.

Ro, you made me cry with that story...so touching and a beautiful memory of Dale.

Christmas Eve service at our church was brief but beautiful. After we went to my sister's and were joined by her son, Matt and his wife (the one who is pregnant). She also has two young children from a previous, very bad marriage, and luckily their drug-addicted dad is not in the picture due to incarceration (at The Rock!).

We had a very nice time and the kids opened some gifts from my sister (she is like a living Santa and always has several gifts for the kids).

After we got home, the kids got to bed and I went to the 11pm service at the old church I grew up in that I was telling you about. It was the highlight of my Christmas Eve. I am so glad I went. When I walked in and sat down in the same 100 year old pews, I just couldn't believe how everything looked the same, it was like I had never left. They had a beautiful song by a small choir that was very good. The Christmas story was read and the minister (who happened to be a petite, very kind-looking woman) read an awesome story about teaching our children about the true meaning of the traditions of Christmas. They had communion and then lit candles and sang Silent Night, perfect!! I am so glad I went.

Well, everyone is still in bed and I have my sweet potatoes in the oven..sure are smelling good!

I will have some more pics to send you soon, Ro. Some of Colorado and some of Christmas (even one of me). Love to All!

Peace,
Boo
