November 24, 2006 - Msg 47334: Wow, fun girl, a whole turkey breast left over? Sounds like sandwiches, and maybe a really creative pasta salad to me. Pasta, sun-dried tomatoes, black olives, a little celery, whatever - all tied together with a bit of Ranch, or even mayo, if you like the stuff. Or a fruit-type salad - diced turkey, pineapple, some halved grapes, some chopped pecans, mandarin oranges, and tie it together with a "dollop of Daisy". So much you can do with turkey - I love it!

I'm off to the back yard. Few small limbs blew down, gotta get them picked up - tons of twigs everywhere, gotta get them too. Leaves in the pond to be netted out, a bit of pruning, especially on the roses, and then I'll get my reindeer all set up. One son and family, and one daughter and her boyfriend and his daughter will be here tomorrow night for OUR Thanksgiving, and I want things shipshape. House is clean enough already, it'll do. I have been lazy today, just finished watching Hoosiers. Beleive it or not I had never seen it. I am babysitting for my friend's two children but they are easy and keep my two occupied. Still have a few dishes to wash and put away and a load of laundry to do but since I ate that sandwich.....maybe a nap on the couch would suit me better. I keep surfing the channels hoping for a nice Christmas movie since it's the day after Thanksgiving, but nothing much on.

Still have nine more reindeer to place and power, need to run to the store, and haven't eaten all day, getting shaky. Guess a spoonful of peanut butter will have to hold me for now, too busy to stop. As for laundry, it can wait, and I'll let the dishwasher do the honors on the dirty dishes. I love that thing, it will do casserole dishes and baked-on stuff just beautifully.

I'm pooped. I should have all those silly deer done, but I found a sick fish in the pond, and started really looking and realized it's very dirty - a thick layer of mulm (the decomposing vegetation and fish waste that builds up on the bottom) that needed to come out. So, have been running the Muck Vac, which is effective but exhausting. I love that pond, but sometimes it sure is a lot of work.

Thanks for the good wishes for tomorrow night, Boo. I don't know about a "smash", but we'll have good fun and some friendly fun. I've got an 18 lb turkey, much more than we'll need, especially with my DIL's mom bringing a smoked brisket, too. I planned for leftovers, because I just love leftover turkey. I can eat it for a week and not get tired of it. If there's any left after that, I freeze it and have it a month or so down the road.

Well, I'm sitting here looking at all my lighted deer. They're so pretty. There's a little sleigh with three reindeer mounted on posts that put them above the ground, and they rock, like they're flying. Five of the others move as well - two bucks and a doe turn their heads from side to side, and two doe raise and lower their heads. One is placed where she appears to be drinking from the pond. Such fun!

I knew I was making a mistake by not stopping to eat today. Ended up having an insulin reaction in the grocery store - sweating and shaking, vision dimming out, couldn't think straight. I found myself near the snack cracker aisle, so just picked up a package of peanut butter crackers and opened them, then made it to the cold drink case and got a Pepsi out of it. In about three minutes, I was feeling okay. Dumb. I know better. I'm just glad it hit me in the store, where help was available, and not while I was working alone in the yard, or driving to the store.

Well, I'm off to the kitchen. I'll get my cranberry sauce cooked tonight, the veggies chopped that go in the dressing so it will go together quickly tomorrow, and make a Key lime pie for my DIL. She loves them! Also will start the fruit draining for the ambrosia salad (pineapple can drain for two days and still be soupy!) I like to get a jump on the preparations so I won't be just worn out tomorrow evening, and will be able to enjoy my family.

November 25, 2006 - Msg 47346: I know, Boo, it was stupid to go all day without eating. I ate a banana before I left for the store, though, and still had a reaction. No telling what would have happened if I hadn't done that. I've got to be more careful.

Well, cranberries are cooked and cooling, fruit is drained and chilling, turkey has been opened and removable parts removed to finish the thawing, pie is made and chilling, and kitchen is clean. That's enough for tonight. We're not going to eat until 5 pm, so I have plenty of time.

My reindeer looked so pretty, until suddenly everything went off, and it wasn't time. The landscape lights were off too, so that meant the GFI had tripped. Yep, the sprinkler in the island flower bed had come on, some connection got wet and shut the whole thing down. Not to worry, I just unplugged that set of deer, reset the breaker, and all was well. Until the next zone came on, and it tripped again. Unplugged that set of deer, reset the breaker. Next zone kicked in, out they went again. Unplugged the last set of deer, reset the breaker, and now my landscape lights and pond pumps will run fine all night. My assignment for tomorrow is to put my little buckets upside down over the power posts, which I had forgotten to do. That will probably fix it. It did last year, and you'd think I'd have remembered. I think I'm getting old, but don't tell anyone.

This 4 day weekend has me all messed up. I woke up this morning thinking it was Sunday. I even took a shower! What a waste. Anyway, we are supposed to get a big storm in here by Tuesday. Boo, lots of snow and bitter cold for us. It has been unseasonably warm the last week or so. We almost hit 70 on Wednesday and our predicted high for Tuesday is 28. So I'm going to hit the lawns at both houses with the riding mower and get the last of the leaves sucked up cause I don't think I'll get another chance after today.

November 25, 2006 - Msg 47349: Oh, Asa, you don't have to worry about me and electrical safety. My handyman/remodeler/do-anything friend, Ted, has installed all the outdoor electrical stuff for me. He's not licensed, but he sure is careful, and on two occasions has told me he wasn't comfortable doing something I wanted done, and gave me the name of a licensed electrician. He insists on those GFIs. I've added a lot of outdoor stuff in the last ten years, and he's put the GFIs on all of it. Once when I got tired of one of them tripping all the time, I asked him if we could do without the GFI (I was being facetious, I knew better) and he quickly answered "Not a chance!" He has added six standing outdoor outlets, hard-wired in six landscape lights, and put in four outlets under the eaves out front, for the Christmas roof lights. All are on GFIs. He's a handy little gadget, that Ted. He and his wife have become my good friends, as well. God is good.

Romeena, it seems odd to hear you talking about your sprinkling system shorting out your Christmas lights. We quit watering around here in mid October. Our tree's get so dry they start whistling for the dogs to come to them. Actually everything here goes dormant by then so they don't need water.

We are in the process of decorating the tree and it looks so pretty. I still have about 20 glass balls to go. I am using various forms of gold and red and some old glass ornaments from Bruce's mom. A few of the kind of ornaments that kids like and I stuck my old plastic santa in his sleigh (from the 60's) in the middle of the tree. I used some white lights and some of the old-fashioned colored ones like we all used to have on our trees as children so the tree looks kind of vintage/traditional...I love it. I will send some pictures of it to Ro.

Bruce just told me that we will probably be in our own house by next Christmas...I sure hope so. I am going to have two trees in the new house. One in the front that can be seen by the road and one in the living room at the back of the house. I am thinking about getting one of those live trees with the rootball on it that you can transplant after Christmas. Have any of you ever done that?

I agree, DWF, I love the Christmas tree. It's so beautiful, and so festive. My former pastor used to say that he was just convinced that Jesus would have enjoyed a pretty Christmas tree! I used real trees for years, and shopping for it was a huge production for my family. Two years before my husband died, we were unable to find a tree I liked, after looking for two days, so he talked me into buying an artificial one, promising that I could get a real one the next year if I didn't like it. Actually, I liked it, and now I'm glad I have it, because shopping for a tree without him would definitely be no fun.

Boo, I've often thought about getting one of those rooted trees, but wonder how they would fare in our Texas summers? Not too well, I'm thinking.

Well, the storm has passed, dinner was a big success, all of us ate too much, and the 3-yr old grandson fell in the fishpond, while trying to reach the umbrella fountain. Ro, we have bought real tree's forever until last year. We bought a fake one, and it looks nice. The best part is I ain't worried about it drying out and catching fire. We have had some trees in the past that were real bad. One in fact I took it down Christmas night cause it was so dead. By the time I got it out the door most of the needles were gone. We always by some fresh clippings so my wife can make a wreath and still have the Christmas tree smell in the house. So much of the season to me is associated with the aromas.

Boo, we did a live tree one year. The biggest problem I had was when I took it out after Christmas and tried digging a hole for it, the ground was frozen. I had to use a pick. The tree did great, but it was the last one I did. To much work, and getting the tree in and out with the rootball was a pain. Your quote was from Christmas Story also Boo.

November 26, 2006 - Msg 47375: Quick hey to the porch. We made it home safe and sound from our Thanksgiving journey to Ohio and Ky. I'm putting away laundry and thought about y'all. I believe the movie you're talking about is the movie that I'm watching now- "It's a Wonderful Life". I watched the original 34th Street earlier while folding the laundry.

We watched it several times every year. Our kids gave him a set one year, with both the colorized and the black-and-white versions in it. He watched them both, and declared the B&W his favorite. It's mine, too.

Well, the kids go back to school tomorrow so back on schedule...It sure was nice not having to get up at the crack of dawn and start the day running.
I really enjoyed this Thanksgiving week. Friday and Saturday I rested and watched alot of TV, went shopping..did some things I like to do instead of work, work, work. Now, it's time to start getting ready for Christmas and Colorado. Got all my shopping done for Erin but not for Sean...I have to get my Christmas cards ready to send, etc.

Well, guess I should make myself go to sleep at a decent hour so I can get out of bed tomorrow.

MDC, I heard something the other day from my sister that I wanted to tell you. She heard a dr on TV talking about Melatonin and he said it was a powerful antioxidant cancer-fighter. That was new to me. I kind of stopped taking it for some reason so now I am starting back.

November 26, 2006 - Msg 47383: Hey, auh2o, it's one of my favorites, too. It had its crude moments at times, but was handled with such finesse, it just wasn't offensive. The roughcut people and the cerebral speech, the contrast was just hilarious.

"Mind you don't hurt yourself, Mordecai." My family still quotes that one, when one of the kids is getting too rowdy, especially in the house. As one parent goes to corral the kid, the other parent (or an aunt, uncle or grandparent) is quoting that line. Too funny!

"Oh, he's just a little angel straight from Heaven!" (gush, gush) Couldn't you have just slapped her?

Sorry, folks, I know this is supposed to be a Christmas quote-a-thon, and I'm not sure how I got on that particular non-Christmas movie. November 27, 2006 - Msg 47390: Good morning everyone. I just finished reading the archives. Sounds like y'all have had a nice Christmas quote-a-thon going. I knew HM's "White Christmas" quote; it's the Mrs.' favorite holiday movie and I've seen it probably 20 times. I think I could dance the routines (if I could dance). Here's a quote for you:

"Surely if my wife can endure a big headache tomorrow you can handle one tonight." That's from my favorite holiday movie.

We had a very nice Thanksgiving. Except we didn't have any sweet potatoes; I have no idea what my mother was thinking! Besides that, dinner was great. (And, no, I am not serious and didn't complain.)

My great uncle was there and I only see him about once a year. I didn't really know him well when I was a kid because he wasn't able to really visit, and couldn't come to family things. It was truly inspiring talking to him. He has had a difficult life but is a positive, Christian man. He and his wife had one child, who was seriously mentally handicapped. When he was born the doctors told them that he had no chance of survival beyond age five. Well, they took him home and took care of him there for 35 years. Mentally, their son never progressed beyond a three-year-old. All those years one attended church, went shopping, to a wedding or funeral, while the other stayed and took care of him. Most of us never saw the two of them together; one time we'd see her, the next time him, etc. They considered it a joy to take care of their son and never considered insititutionalizing him, even when they got older and found it very difficult to bathe him and change his diapers. Their son died about seven years ago, and they sold the house they had built. (The two of them actually built it; she would prepare the materials or do light construction during the day, and he would do the heavy stuff when he got home from work until bedtime. They did that for two years until the house was built. That was about 1950.) They moved into an assisted-living facility (they were nearly 80) and thought they'd do some traveling and just spend some time together. A few months later, my great aunt was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, went downhill fast, and died the next year. My uncle decided to stay on the Alzheimer's wing that they had moved to and still helps out with the other patients. He remains convinced that he has led a great life and owes it all to the Lord. What a touching testimony he was to me on Thanksgiving.

Also, We used to get live trees. Seven out of eight lived. The trick is to dig the whole in the fall, ASA. You can't leave them in the house too long, either. Two weeks is max. Just be sure to have help moving it or expect to blow something out. It always seemed ridiculous to spend the money to but a tree to throw out in January, when you could spend, like, $15 more a get a tree to enjoy for years. Well, that was until I got a little older. Now the thought of hauling in a heavy root ball makes my bad hurt thinking about it.

November 27, 2006 - Msg 47397: My stars! Between that beautiful story about Me-They's aunt and uncle, and all the nonsense you folks are throwing around, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I love Mayberry!

I wish you all could see my yard. I still have roses blooming, a huge spread of impatiens is glowing over by the arbor, the angel's trumpet (brugmansia) has nine huge yellow blossoms dangling from it, each at least 8" across the bell, and an iris has opened! With freezing weather on the way by Wednesday, I'll cut the iris tomorrow and bring it inside. Also, my plumeria has to come inside. It's huge, in an enormous pot, and probably weighs 300 lbs. My sweet neighbor, who owns the garden center and sold me the plant in the first place, said he'd come by this evening and bring it in for me. It's a true tropical, and doesn't like it any colder than 38. Good friends - what a blessing!

Well, guess I'll go rustle up some lunch. Should be easy, with all the leftovers I've got! I'm glad we had put the turkey away before Bentley made his raid on the kitchen. All he got was pumpkin pie. Silly dog.

Just last night as I was spending some time alone in prayer I was talking over some things with the Lord about being a better servant to my family. Sometimes I have the tendancy to think that taking care of my family is less important than doing other things (like church work, etc). I know that is wrong. I was asking the Lord to change me and make me more patient in serving them. Somehow I keep feeling like I have to "do" more. When I read what your Uncle said about his "great life" I was just overwhelmed. I think the Lord had you share that with us. You're such a blessing.

By the way, I am doing laundry. Throw your stuff on the pile.
