I'm up for lasagna and thanks for sharing about your son, Skippy. Sterling, I really appreciated your comments, too. They were very encouraging. Today, Bruce was out changing the oil on the tractor and I found Sean out there helping him. That was real nice to see.
Bruce went to Linda's memorial service today but I stayed home with the kids. He said it was very nice and that Keith seemed to be doing very well and releived that Linda is no longer suffering. Thanks again for your prayers for them.
I just finished watching How The Grinch Stole Christmas with Erin. It was the old cartoon version that we all watched as kids. TBS played it and The Wizard of Oz tonight. Erin is glued to the set right now watching Dorothy in the tornado.
The weather today was as perfect as it gets. Crisp, dry and sunny. Didn't need a coat but in no way was it hot. I took the kids to a fall festival in town. One of the local churches puts on a nice festival for the community and everything is free.
I forgot to tell ya'll that I got those Goodyear Chritmas records that I purchased on Ebay, and let me tell you, I hit the jackpot of vintage Christmas LPs! They are great! Two of them are the two I was looking for that I listened to as a little girl and they are in perfect condition. I was thrilled with all of them. Now, if I could just find a record player!
See ya'll at the lake.

November 13, 2006 - Msg 47092:
Good evening, everyone. Thanks for your concern. Tom, I appreciate your call, and for those of you who emailed, thanks! It's nice to be missed. Actually, I was in Fredericksburg with my kids. This is the third year they have had a "reunion" of the four siblings. Since both girls live in Fredbg, and thus there are two houses for entertainment purposes, it works well. The Florida son and his wife fly in to San Antonio and rent a car. The son who lives just north of Ft. Worth and his family drive down, and The Plum and I go down in my car. We can't go with the Ft. Worth kids, because with two little boys and their car seats, there's no place for anyone else to sit, plus they take their dog, Bentley, and I have the Plum. I went down on Thursday afternoon, and came back today.
The Plum got mugged when we got there. My daughter has a Jack Russell/fox terrier mix who is just a total spaz. The minute I put Sugarplum down on the floor, Maisy charged at her and just speared her with both dagger-point front paws, knocking her into a wall and scaring her nearly to death, and probably bruising her ribs. Sugar was yelping, and Bella, my daughter's huge yellow lab, came and put one paw on her, and got her around the shoulders and neck in her huge mouth, which further terrified the Plum. Bella was trying to protect her from Maisy, and the mouthing was to tell Maisy "This is mine, back off." She didn't hurt Sugarplum. If she had been trying to hurt her, she would have, but there wasn't a tooth mark, not one, and she released her as soon as someone grabbed Maisy. Sugar, however, was pretty well pummeled by Maisy before Bella intervened, and spent the evening limping around and yelping if anyone besides me touched her. A visit to the vet the next morning proved her to be just fine, limp was gone, and all was well. Maisy spent most of the rest of our visit in her crate, the little demon-dog.
Actually, poor Maisy. I feel sorry for her. She's one of those dogs that needs constant attention, and when she doesn't get it, she just builds up a head of steam that explodes when someone does pay attention. My daughter and her boys leave the house at 7 a.m., and don't get home until around five, then have sports, play practices, lessons, outings with friends, and such and poor Maisy just doesn't get what she needs. My daughter is trying to find her another, more suitable home, perhaps a retired couple that will just make her the darling of their days.
Well, after that 4 1/2 hour drive, I'm tired. Bed sounds very good to me, especially my own, extremely comfortable bed! Will read the archives tomorrow - sure hope everyone is doing well.

Glad your feeling better Fungirl. I hate stomach flu's. Yuck!
Boy Skippy, that is always a challange as family's get older and everyone wants to do something different. We have encountered that the last few years and finally just announced that we are doing dinner at our house at three p.m. on Thanksgiving day. If you would like to attend, please feel welcome. If not, no hard feelings, be safe and enjoy the day. We have noticed that all the kids make it over and none of the drama seems to be there. So Millie's advice is good.

Welcome back Gizzmo...don't be such a stranger.
I just accidentally spent 325.00 at WalMart. Horrors! Everything is so expensive. I got some things for Thanksgiving and some warm clothes for Erin and I for our trip to Colorado and before I knew it, I was spending over 300.00. I think I'll email Bruce at work and tell him (heehee). Good thing he got that bonus last week.
Good to have you back Romeena. I'll bet Sugarplum wishes she had stayed home. Last year when we spent a weekend in Fredricksburg in the old historic farmhouse, there was a Jack Russell terrier that lived down the road and he kept hanging around and driving us crazy. He was adorable but extremely hyper. Everytime anyone opened a door, he ran into the house and jumped all over everything. Eventually my mom-in-law chased him off but he was back by evening. They are the cutest dogs but as you said, very active and need lots of attention...which reminds me, I wonder how Maude's Jack Russell is doing.
Skippy, I think you should stop feeling guilty and do what is best for your immediate family.
Back to work...SO much to do today!

Hey Boo, Our Jack Russell is doing well. She is pretty much potty trained to go outside, and although she has energy, and is still in the chewing stage she does okay. We have her outside on a pretty long lead when the weather is nice so she can run and play. My kids play with her after school and my husband is off some during the week so her plays with her then. She is funny, around 9 pm she is ready for bed and will either jump in our laps and lay down and go to sleep or go get in her bed and she is down for the night. She sleeps in the laundy room and does not make a sound all night. She is still only about 4 months old so she still has a lot of puppy in her. Belle is pretty good natured thus far. Thanks for asking. Big Maude

AFD: Yeah, Veda's trying hard to out-do the nonstop chatter of her sister and brother. It's pure Darwin at our house--survival of the loudest. They do get big quick, don't they?
MAUDE: Glad that your Jack Russell is working out. We had one, but not again. I need a mellower kind of dog. Y'know, one that likes to nap like Barney's Blue.
Oh, AUH2O: FYI...The topic on the Diane Rehm Show on NPR tomorrow (Wednesday) is "Barry Goldwater and the New American Conservative."
All you old movie buffs: I watched a Bette Davis movie yesterday but I don't know the name. She played "Aunt Charlotte" and goes away a spinster frump and comes back changed. She also has a sort-of affair with a married guy. It was okay, but I can't imagine anyone thinking Bette Davis was much of a beauty. Does anyone know the name? Just curious.

Hey, SPOT, MILLIE. Dinner sounds f-i-n-e.
I have another question for y'all. We have a Christmas dilemma. We have tried hard to keep our kids focused on the true meaning of the season while letting them enjoy the traditional kids stuff. So, we keep the gifts meaningful though few, and don't get extravagant with the spending. But, there's other Christmas shopping that is putting the pinch on our wallets...
We usually see our neices and nephews on Christmas, or a few days later. In the past, we have bought for them all. Nothing extravagant, but the cost adds up. Well, now we have 15 (from age 2 months to 22) and we just can't see spending so much money just to have a gift to throw on their piles. And, now boyfriends, girlfriends, and soon fiancees are getting thrown into the mix. We thought about making gifts, but with so many it's just not feasible. Do any of you have a similar problem? If so, how have you handled it?
Anyway, have a great evening.
Me-They
November 14, 2006 - Msg 47119:
Howdy, all. Gotta go to work in a few minutes, but wanted to stop by. Me-They, as my family grew and expanded, we encountered the same problem. Tried drawing names, but that didn't work out too well. I simply cannot give a gift to one of my children and not to the others. So, we did a girl gift/guy gift thing. All the girls bring a gift that a girl would like - we set a price limit of $30-40 - and the guys bring a guy-type gift. You never saw so many gorgeous Christmas decorations, and cordless drills in your life. Anyway, everyone draws a number. Girls only, then guys only. The girl with number one chooses and opens a gift from the girl gift pile. Number two then can either steal that gift, or choose and open another, and so on. No gift can be stolen more than three times. Third steal, it's yours and can't be taken away. Then the play switches to the guys, and the same pattern follows. It's fun, and there's an amazing amount of finagling, with everyone trying to be the third one to steal a particularly popular gift. With this plan, no one has to buy more than one gift, you can spend enough to make it something nice, and it's a whole evening's entertainment. As for the little kids, the aunts and uncles usually manage to have a little gift for each one. If there are so many that it becomes a problem, then name-drawing works well there. I always have a gift for each of my kids - sometimes a "couples" gift if I find the right thing, sometimes not. The out-of-towners get into the play as well, by phone. A proxy is designated, and my son or his wife participate through the proxy by phone. There is much flowery description of each gift, and the proxy has as much fun as anyone - usually one of the teenage grandkids. Well, that's how we do it. I'm sure others have some great ideas as well.
OK, off I go to work. Yuck. Sure would much prefer to stay home with the Plum, but the bills march on. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

Hi M-T. . .I buy for all of my nieces and nephews (there are 10 on my side and 3 on hubby's). For the older girls I buy semi-practical -funny socks or cutesy socks and my oldest nephew usually gets his own roll of summer sausage. We just appreciate being all together. Now some of those have gone off and gotten married. I don't buy for the spouses. If the hubby wants to wear my nieces socks - that's her problem. For the younger ones - it is usually a video that they can enjoy. My brother buys all the nieces and nephews $10 walmart cards which they all appreciate. Sometimes, I hit a good sale at Bath and Body - now all the girls go for that!
We started drawing names a long time ago and my sister dropped out of it now it is buying for all again. It didn't work so well.
I have done Romeena's idea at school. It works great and it is ALOT of fun!

To homemaker Msg 47060, thank you for generating interest for our troops by identifying how packages and cards can be sent through AnySoldier.com. It's a great web site to show support for our military personnel in combat.
However, I have chosen to participate in an alternatice service they offer rather than try to second guess what gift items I want to send them. It's at Treat Any Soldier. At this site, the site owner states "Due to overwhelming requests for ready-made care packages on the AnySoldier.com site, I started a separate effort and designed care packages that I actually sent to my son while he was in Iraq and now Afghanistan. Through trial and error (and a lot of feedback from my son and his friends) I learned what TO send and what NOT to send." You can purchase gift packages designed specifically for males and females. As a result, I am sending 4 entertainment packages (one male and one female soldier in both Afghanistan and Iraq). I only wish I could afford to do more.
As a Navy and Army veteran, I would like to thank all of you who are participating in this project or doing something on your own to show your support.
To Me-They Msg 47118, one method is to consolidate gifts. For couples, give one house gift they can both enjoy and address it to both of them. Or give a restaurant gift certificate. Limit the amount to cover a complete lunch for two, not a complete dinner for two.
Another method is to shop after Christmas to take advantage of after-holiday sales. You can shop this year for next year. Or for the times when you see your neices and nephews a few days after Christmas, shop the day after Christmas to take advantage of the sales and still be in time to present your gifts.

Poor Horatio - Treat Any Soldier is run by the same group as AnySoldier.com and I am thankful that you have participated. My father, as I have said before, is a WWII vet. It was through his heroism that I was afforded the education that I received. For that, this is what I do to honor his time in war. He did not have the luxury of a care package and when he was wounded - had some pretty horrific stories of being cared for. They did the best with what they had.
Thank you all. . .

Gizzmo what did your friend name the baby? & Poor Horatio both of those sites are awesome, I didn't participate in the Front Porch project you all are doing because I already have 2 units I am sending things to, K-9 or as they are known MWD (Military War Dogs) units, so I'm kind of tapped out for sending much more, anyway, don't get worried if ya'll don't see me for a day or 2, I am heading to DC this weekend to work & I'm busy as a cat's tail in a roomful of rocking chairs with my own business with the holidays just around the corner. Best get off here & hit the hay, got another long day tomorrow. Nite All

MDC, my husband is very generous and just said, "okay" when I told him about WalMart today. He also told me to go buy myself a record player yesterday. I really hit the jackpot with that guy. Really, though, he knows me and he knows that I am careful and I am not usually a big spender so we don't have fights over financial issues.
Poor Horatio, I did look for a record player on ebay but the only thing I found that I wanted was something I could get here and avoid the shipping. I played some of the records today and they are beyond wonderful! I listened to some great stuff from the 60's, even some Mahalia Jackson. Really Christmasy stuff.
Me-They, your post about Bette Davis and her Love blowing smoke in each other's faces was hilarious. You have a real way with words! Boy, movies sure have changed since the 40's. Can you imagine anyone being so noble in the movies now?
Off to bed!

Evening, porch. I haven't been here much lately, and when I have been, not very chatty. So here's the deal. I've been having so much pain and stomach problems the last couple of weeks, I just haven't been myself. Finally went to the doc yesterday, got some new meds, and now I'm feeling better. Sorry if I've been a pill or a downer, I will be better. Y'all are great.

Good afternoon everyone. Thanks for all your suggestions. We'll have to mull it over.
At chaple at school this morning, Nora received an award. Each month a few students from each class who have exhibited special character qualities (kindness, generosity, etc.) are selected to receive an award. She and one other student from her class received an award for "gentleness." Of course I am quite proud. But it's a good thing they weren't at the breakfast table with her and her brother this morning, though.
It is a tremendouse project you've put together, HM. Like MAVIS, we are participating through another program, at our church. I can't imagine spending Christmas away from my family, much less among people who want to kill me. We must let them know that they are not forgotten and that their personal sacrifices aren't ignored.
MILLIE: You're no downer at all. When you mentioned it I thought of that recurring SNL skit with Rachel Dratch, "Debbie Downer," aznd actually laughed. I'm glad that you're feeling better.

Good evening, all. After working last night, I slept today from noon until about 6:30, so now am wide awake and will probably be up most of the night. Night shifts sure do mess up one's schedule.
Here's a link that all pet owners need to follow and read:
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/raisins.asp
This is some pretty scary stuff. I have allowed the Plum to have a few grapes at times, and have shared a couple of macadamia nuts with her - not sure if she's ever had raisins. This report has made a believer out of me - no more of those things for her. I think we'll stick to her carrots. A word to the wise....
Well, guess I'll go read the paper. I'm a couple of days behind on that. Have a lovely, restful night, friends, and a good day tomorrow. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Well I felt better for about 24 hours. Doing some investigating on the internet. And three of the meds I am on can cause liver toxicity. And I am not on small doses. Just wondering if that may be what is causing my nausea and exhaustion. Just a question to the nurses in the group...dont meant to be gross....but a very metalic smell when you have a b.m....does that mean anything?
I am going to see my regular doctor at 4 pm today and he will probably run some labs. I will let you know what is going on as soon as I know.

Good morning, everyone! Chuck, where on earth have you been? We've been thinking you'd deserted us. Don't be such a stranger.
Gizzmo, it's good to see you back, too. You folks that run off and stay gone sure are missed.
fun girl, I think that metallic smell is probably from the antibiotics, and not an indicator of any liver damage. Many of the antibiotics will do that. You'll probably notice an unpleasant metallic taste in your mouth as well. However, if you're on three different meds that can cause liver toxicity, you're wise to call that to your doctor's attention. Were all the meds prescribed by the same doctor? If not, do they all know about everything you're taking? I'm sure everyone knows this, but one should always, always, tell a prescribing doctor about everything else you're taking. If you don't tell them, they don't know. Personally, I'm in favor of a national prescription drug registry, that can be accessed by a pharmacist to check for duplicates and cross-reactions. I have a cousin whose wife at one time was going to about ten different doctors, getting prescriptions from each one, and was seriously overdosing herself on tranquilizers, respiratory meds and pain pills. She was using several different pharmacies as well. She was weak, sickly and mostly like a zombie. My cousin finally gathered up all of her pills in a big paper bag, took them to one doctor and plopped them on his desk. That doctor about had a coronary when he saw what she was taking. Needless to say, the situation was quickly remedied, and now the "sickly" wife is quite healthy. She was doing it to herself and didn't even realize it. She felt bad, so her response was to take more medication. Thank goodness my cousin had sense enough to realize what was happening.
Yesterday was cold, very windy and blustery, not a very nice day. Today is better. Still breezy, but not so cold, and the sunshine is beautiful. Roses are blooming, as are mums, pansies, begonias, and even impatiens. A few zinnias are still blooming, but most have gone to seed. There are mums bursting into bloom everywhere, mostly plants I've taken out of containers and stuck in the ground and forgotten about at the end of the season. They sort of blend in with the shrubbery until this time of year, then suddenly there's a big splash of color. What fun!
Well, guess I'll rustle up something to eat. Millie, I wish I could come have breakfast at your place. Do you serve grits? Can't have breakfast without grits. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena
