Glad to see I am not the only one still mourning Steve Irwin, Romeena. Sometimes I still can't believe that he is really gone. I like your "Camelot" analogy as well. Money and fame can buy and do alot for you, prestige-wise, but it doesn't mean a hill of beans if you haven't got honor, self-respect, and respect for your loved ones along with it, and Steve and Terri had all of that. There are some things money can't buy. And although they both had money, Steve will leave a more important legacy than JFK, imo.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, ROMEENA. With three kids, the peacemaker role is one that I'm really working on.

Anybody watch Mr. T's "reali-T" show, "I Pity the Fool" on TV Land last night? It was good fun. I never was a fan of his "A-Team" show. Do you remember how Mr. T used to were all those gold chains? I saw an interview with him recently and he has stopped wearing gaudy jewelry. He said that even though it was just a schtick, after he visited a very poor area the plight of the kids touched his heart so much that he felt that he could no longer flaunt wealth while so many have so little. In the last few years he survived some bad illness (I think some kind of cancer) and it has completely changed his outlook. Even though he did a lot of charity work before, his mission now is to help others. He actually seemed really down-to-earth, gentle, and intelligent. Genuinely nice guy.

Where's IDELLE, LUCY, MAVIS, TOM, BWB, DWF, IRISHTER, DIXIE, and the rest of the gang? Maybe I'm not wearing strong enough antiperspirant.

Yesterday, out of the blue, her husband moved out, left her with 4 kids. She's just in shock. Prayers for her and her family. Ok, so I was telling y'all about our 150 yr homecoming at our "beach church" this weekend. I am looking forward to seeing some family I haven't seen in a long time. Unfortunately, my 25th high school reunion is this weekend too, so I'll have to miss that. But it's all good. Gotta go fix lunch, Y'all join us! October 12, 2006 - Msg 46338: My favorite ice cream of all time, even better than Blue Bell' Cookies 'n Cream, is Baskin-Robbins' Chocolate Raspberry Truffle. Or Chocorate Raspberry Truffer, according to the elderly Asian gentleman who used to work at our local BR. It's seasonal, only available at certain times of the year, and is just beyond wonderful. Haven't had any of it in a while.

Prayers for your friend, Millie. What a crummy thing for a man to do. Of course, we don't know the circumstances, he may have his side of the story as well, but I can't imagine what would be so bad as to cause a man to abandon a wife with four children. Me-They, you're so right, in your observation about our culture expecting to always be happy, and feeling free to do whatever it takes to achieve that state, no matter who gets hurt in the process. Sad.

Well, I went out and had lunch with my best buddy, dropped in on my brother at his jewelry store and harassed him for a while, came home and planted some pansies, and am about to settle into my big chair with a glass of the black currant tea from the Corner Bakery (where we had lunch). My life would be happier if my husband were still in it, but he's not, and he cannot be, and so I've learned, as the Apostle Paul said, "in whatsoever state I find myself, therewith to be content." I'm reasonably healthy, reasonably secure, I have family and friends, (and the Plum) and you folks, and I'll see my husband again some day, so I'm content. Have a great day, friends.

Her Daddy left her Mamma in Montana in a log cabin durring the depression... left a sack of potatoes on the doorstep. They ate a lot of dandilion greens and the odd rabbit for years. October 12, 2006 - Msg 46342: Laawww, Mrs. Wiley! Chicken and dumplings? That sounds so good! One of my favorites. Haven't made that dish in a long time. It's one of those things that you can't make a little of, always end up with a washtub full, seems like, and with just me to eat it, it wears out its welcome after a while.

Millie, I hope your friend gets a good lawyer and nails that cad's backside to the barn door. She should go for the maximum in child support, whether she needs it or not. If not, then put it in trust for the children's education. Where does a man get the notion that he can father a passel of kids, then just go tootling off to pursue his dreams, and leave their mother to survive the best way she can? Shame on him.

It should be noted here, though, that it's not always the father who defaults. Those of you who received the prayer request email from me today will note that I said my friend's granddaughter's mother chose not to be a part of her life. That is, she left when the little girl was very small, and they don't even know if she's dead or alive, haven't heard from her in years. Said raising the child was "just too much responsibility." That translates to "she's cramping my style." Shame on her, too.

It has been beautiful here today. Cool, never quite made it to 70. Cheer up, Boo, maybe it's on the way to you. My grass has slowed down in growth, but is still emerald green. Flowers are perking up without the oppressive heat, and are just lovely. Roses are blooming again, impatiens are gorgeous, esperanza has huge yellow clusters of blooms, knockout roses are putting on a new flush of blooms (they'll bloom until Christmas), and even my begonias are gorgeous. As for all those bulbs we planted last week (about 150 bulbs - hyacinth, daffodils and such), there's no telling what's going to come up where. I sat here this morning and watched a squirrel dig up a bulb, carry it to another bed and bury it again. He did that several times! Then he dug up one - a hyacinth, I think, and carried it up into the tree outside my window and ate the whole thing, right in front of me, the little vandal. I got his picture, so could identify him in a lineup if necessary! (teehee) I really don't mind, I always just plant more than I need, because I know they're going to pilfer some of them, and I'd rather lose a few bulbs than to have no squirrels. I just love the little pests. So cute!

Well, I have some leftover chili, guess that will be supper, followed by some good cantaloupe. At least I hope it's good, haven't cut it yet. If it's not, I'll chop it up and put it out for the critters. They'll eat it, even if it isn't very sweet.

I heard a preacher say that the only thing sin has to offer us is some kind of pleasure and if a person confuses happiness with pleasure, he lives himself wide open for the enemy of the soul. I thought that was pretty true. People often do think that pleasure will bring them happiness, but that isn't the key to being happy, is it?

So sad about your friend, Millie. To have four children and have something like that happen must really be devastating. I saw it up close and personal within the last 2 years with Bruce's sister. I mean, that poor woman nearly lost her mind with grief and anger. She isn't alot better off now and is addicted to Xanax. There is nothing more we can do for her but just be there and pray. Her ex is now remarried and dying of colon cancer so that adds to her misery because she still loves him and can't be with him through this.

No, Me-They, the bible study I am attending is a Beth Moore (are you familiar with her?) study on Daniel and it is at one of the local Baptist churches. I have met some wonderful women and am thankful for that. The woman who facilitates the study is a real character. She is about 60 with bright red hair and a contagious smile, and boy is she hilarious. I am really enjoying it; glad your wife is enjoying her experience with the ladies bible study.

All the talk about cool weather is making me salivate! It was in the 90's here today and felt like 100. I was sweating like crazy just running errands around town.

So good to have you around again, Mrs. Wiley...wanna go down to the Grand and watch a movie? I think they are showing the Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston. We can walk over to the fillin' station afterward and get a grape soda and talk politics and religion.

BOO: It frosted here last night. Poor impatiens. The high will be 57 today, they say.

The best pre-marriage advice I received was from my pastor, who reminded us that marriage isn't two people coming together to be happy, its two happy people coming together.

I am reminded of a joke. A man went to his pastor and said, "I can't stand my wife and just don't love her anymore." The pastor said, "Well, if you can't love your wife, think of her as your neighbor and do as the Bible says and love your neighbor." The next day the man comes back and tells the pastor that it just didn't work, did he have any other ideas. The pastor told him, "Love your enemy." There's a point there.

Many believe that marriage is all about "my happiness," or even romantic love. It is about commitment.

October 13, 2006 - Msg 46356: Wow, homemaker, you already have your wood stove operating? For me, the cool front meant that I could turn the a/c off and open a few windows for a couple of hours. Nice fresh, cool breeze blew through, felt so nice, but by mid-afternoon, I needed the a/c again. Granted, it's not running very often, but it does kick in now and then. I think there's stored heat in the brick walls that radiates into the house, because it stays warmer in here than it is outside when things are closed up. Won't be long, though. We'll get what we Texans call a "blue Norther" pretty soon, and it will get cold fast. I've seen the temperature drop as much as 50 degrees when one of those things blows through. I've seen it go from the 90s down to the low 40s in a couple of hours. That'll get your attention, especially when you've left home wearing shorts! It's not too embarrassing, though, because you find yourself sprinting across the mall parking lot toward your car, with a lot of other blue-legged women! (teehee)

October 13, 2006 - Msg 46360: One more thing, then I've got to get busy. Has anyone else been getting phone calls, with a message that starts out "This isn't a sales call." It's a recorded message, and leaves a number for you to call. It shows up on caller ID as ASTA funding. I generally ignore such calls, but I finally got tired of their calls waking me when I've been working at night, and their messages cluttering up my answering machine, so I finally called their number this morning, planning to tell them to cease and desist. Well, the first response I got was a recording informing me that the call was an attempt to collect a debt, and any information obtained would be used for that purpose. Hmmm. Debt? What debt? I don't owe anything, at least nothing that's delinquent, so what debt? The next thing was this little bit - "For verification purposes, please enter your complete Social Security number." HA! I don't think so! My mama didn't raise a fool. At that point, I hung up, so all they got was my number on their Caller ID, and obviously they already had that, so they've got nothing.

This kind of stuff is so annoying. They're not going to get any information from me, but I surely am tired of their intrusive calls. So, I've filed a complaint with the state Attorney General's office of Consumer Protection. They gave me the numbers of the FTC and the BBB and asked that I also report the calls to them. I will do it. This sort of stuff just walks all over my fightin' side. I guess what I really should do is just to ask Sarah to quit putting their calls through to my number.

I’m concerned that we still haven’t heard from ASA. I hope that he’s feeling better and is back on the porch soon. Speaking of missing people, MAVIS, TOM, GOOBER, IDELLE, LUCY and some other regulars haven’t been posting much, either. And there are a number of others like DIXIE and IRISHTER who haven’t checked in for a long time it seems.

Maybe be should have an Old Home Week. Last one here has to wait in the stag line with Mr. Schwamp and a bunch of slumped over teenaged boys.

Well, we’re meeting with our contractor (I talk about him like he’s on our payroll or something) on Monday. He’s a nice Christian man who put on our addition three years ago. We are having our kitchen done, which we have put off for a year now. Right now it’s a real mess. My house is 125 years old and unfortunately, the kitchen was inexpensively “remodeled” in the 1950s. There are holes and stains on the drop ceiling (yuck) from leaks, the vinyl floor is chipping up, you know, stuff like that. Hopefully, by doing some of the grunt work, trimming and painting we can get this done for a reasonable cost. We also are getting it rewired at the same time. One of my biggest concerns is timeframe—we can’t be without a kitchen for long. After all, our entire house is only about 1,200 square feet. Our contractor is pretty good about accommodating us, though, and won’t start on another job until ours is done, which is a real plus from a contractor, let me tell you.

Anyway, I suppose break is over.

Hey, Barnwannabe, I'm right there with you on the Christmas music. I've been packing the CDs around in my car for weeks now, just haven't put them in the player because my friends look at me funny when they get in the car and Christmas music is playing in September! The first of November, though, in they go! First in the stack will be Andy's "Christmas Guest". I just love that one.

By way of contrast, I also like Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas music. I have a 4-CD set of their stuff, very nice. Of course, I have all the old favorites too, recorded many years ago and remastered on CDs. The big bands, Bing Crosby, Pavarotti, you name it, I've probably got it. I've even got the Statler Brothers. Bet I've got at least 50 Christmas CDs. Got some of the old 33 vinyls, too. Anybody else got any of those? I'll bet colt does, if we knew where he is these days. I miss him!

And where IS Mary Wiggins, anyway? I wanted another of Pat's paintings, wish she'd check in, along with all the others who have gone missing. I think we need to put out some APBs, if we can get Barney off that cot in the back room long enough.

Ah, someone else who collects Christmas music..I have a ton of it. I only wish I still had the old vinyls we listened to at Christmas. I remember my folks taking us to Sears at Christmas time because they had this huge toy department, and then afterward we would walk across the street to the Goodyear tire place and get the annual Christmas album which always had popular performers of the day like Anthony Newly, Barbra Atreisand, the Lennon Sisters, etc... I sure miss those. Do you have any Goodyear Christmas albums?

We always went to Joske's department store, on Alamo Plaza in San Antonio when I was a kid. They devoted one whole floor of the store to Christmas, called it "Wonderland". There was a train for kids to ride, that ran through the whole thing, dozens of animated displays, Santa on a huge, beautiful throne (it seemed huge to me, anyway) and piles of ornaments and beautiful things. Of course, I know now that those ornaments and things were for sale, but at the time, I thought they were just there because they were so pretty. Is anyone else old enough to remember when ornaments didn't come in boxes? They were just piled in little bins on the counters of the five-and-dime, and in the bigger stores they were in bigger bins, or in baskets on the floor. Of course, some of the stores today, especially the Christmas specialty stores, display things in baskets, and it's so pretty, but those are usually special (read: expensive) ornaments. I remember when even the plain, round, red-gold-blue-green ornaments were displayed that way. At 2 for a nickel, my mom would buy a few each year, and always managed to buy two or three fancy ones, too - those shaped like a bell, or even a little Santa Claus. I still have several of those, and some of the plain round ones as well. I can identify them because their color has oxidized or something, and looks different, almost transparent, but still pretty. There is one gold teardrop-shaped one, that has turned a lovely burnished copper color. One of my favorites. Ah, memories!

Boy, Christmas memories already, nothing like getting ahead! ha Frankly, I wish we could just breeze right by halloween and go right into Thanksgiving/Chrstmas season. I cant stand all that morbid junk in the stores. When I was young, it was ONE evening, I'd usually dress like a hobo, get some treats and go home. Now that the truth is out about that day, I like to help at our Bible Character Party at church.
Boo- I do indeed have two of those Goodyear records., Lou Rawls etc., but i honestly cant get into the music until Dec. I also have a plastic goodyear blimp!

I heard the strangest story on the news- about the lady whose NYC apartment was hit by the Yankee pitcher's plane a few days back. Do y'all remember several years back when one of the balloons from the Macy's parade went astray and knocked a NYC streetlamp down on a woman's head?She was in a coma for about a month. This is the SAME woman! Talk about rotten luck,bad karma or whatever! I think I'd leave town if that was me! Strange indeed.
Ok,I'll confess. I played some Christmas music a few days ago. I got the new James Taylor Christmas CD (Me-They- it's the same as the one he had out in the Hallmark stores in 2004.Save your money if you already have that one.I didn't know.Clever marketing ploy,huh? Shame on JT!) It does,however,have ONE song on it that wasn't on the other Christmas album. I had to hear it.(BTW-it's a beautiful song!)Other than that,I'll try to wait till Thanksgiving has passed until I crank up the Fa La La La Las! I'm tempted though!
Okay,I'm getting the ice cream out of the freezer. Pies are on the table.Y'all come on over!

My sister vacationed in Michigan recently and visited an orchard to pick some apples. She brought us home a big bag of red and green ones so I made a couple of pies...they smell wonderful. Don't have any ice cream to put on them, though. That is really something about that woman getting hit by the balloon and then the airplane crashing her apartment! How strange.

Romeena, I remember Joskes...We lived in Houston for a short time when I was 7 and we lived across the street from a mall with a Joskes. I got my first orange velvet Beatnik dress there, with a gold medallion necklace. Boy, at age 7, I thought I was really something wearing that. About the Goodyear albums, I looked on Ebay and found four of the Goodyear Christmas albums from the 70's, 2 were still sealed but none of them were the ones I am looking for.

MDC, my son Sean informed me today that we are NOT having anything to do with Halloween this year. I asked why and he said because it is Satan's holiday, so I just said, "Ok, maybe we can have a prayer time or something". He said he would like to do that. Can you believe that coming from an 11 year old. I think what happened to us last year scared him. Do you remember how last Halloween I took the kids trick-or-treating for the first time in their lives and a huge wind came up and it started to hail and sleet and we had to run several blocks, freezing and soaking wet to the car (very unusual in South Texas). Sean had said that night that God was telling us he didn't want us to celebrate Halloween...I guess it made a real impression on him.

Ro, as far back as I can remember, ornaments have been in boxes with the cellophane on front. We used to have some old glass ornaments that belonged to my grandmother but my sister and I were so rowdy as young 'uns that we knocked the tree over enough to break them all over the years, I guess. I don't know why in the world my mom (and dad) didn't take us to the woodshed once in awhile.

Think I'll go have a little peice of pie while it's warm.

My sister has a little poodle/sh*tzu mix that is a nice dog but he apparently had a bad experience with a dog groomer and now he gets ferocious when anyone tries to trim near his face, feet or backside. My sister bought some clippers to try to do it herself but he tries to bite her. She got some sedatives from the vet to give him before taking him to be groomed but they tried two different strengths and they didn't slow the dog down a bit. The dog really needs grooming because he get poopy all matted on his bottom. She really doesn't know what to do besides trying a stonger sedative?? Any advice that can help her with this would be appreciated. I have a friend who is a groomer and I thought about taking the dog to her but I am afraid he might bite her.

It's raining here and it sure sounds nice. My dad has tin on the roof of his porch and I can hear the pitter patter of the rain on it..so nice.

As for the poodle/shih-tzu mix that resists grooming, have you considered one of the cone collars, at least for doing the feet and backside? Wouldn't help for the face, but at least you could get the rest of him done. You know what I mean, the lampshade thing that the vets use to keep a dog from pulling at casts and bandages. Failing that, another option is to have the vet do the critical grooming, with the dog under true sedation. Occasionally, when I'm having the Plum's teeth cleaned, which requires sedation anyway, I pay a little extra and the tech combs her feet out very thoroughly for me. She'll let me do a quick combout when I groom her, but to really clean between her toes and all, she gets very upset. No biting, that's not her nature, but she does get pretty frazzled. Unless Mavis has a better idea, that's all I can suggest, other than a muzzle.

Well, the moron down the street just came home. He always has his car radio crashing at full volume, and I can feel the bass in the pit of my stomach. When he gets home, he parks in his driveway and sits there, entertaining the neighborhood, for three or four songs, until he thinks we've had enough, then he turns it off and goes inside. Some people just have no smart at all. He's a member of one of the three or four families that now occupy a lovely house about four houses down from me, formerly owned by some very nice people. City zoning enforcement, where are you??

I am still dealing with vertigo that makes sitting at the computer really hard to do. Mornings seem to be better for me. I find I tire easily and when I get tired my mind just seems to quit working. Although it is improving slowly, it's not as fast as I would like it.
I have returned back to work, but am finding it to be more difficult than I expected.

October 15, 2006 - Msg 46403: Prayers for Asa & for you too Ro, that you don't strangle that neighbor & end up in jail, that's what I'd do. Glad to be in the country where my loudest neighbors (usually) are the 2 hoot owls & a cow or 2 bawling. The other night, I did have a coyote serenade at 2am tho, that kind of neighbor I can do without. Boo if the dog's nose is more like a Poodle than a Shih-Tzu, I would suggest a muzzle, if not, I would talk to your groomer friend, let her know up front what she will be dealing with & see if she will give him a try. Us groomers always appreciate knowing ahead of time if we have a potential biter. He might be acting out more for your sister because that's his "Mom" than he would for someone else, just like 2 legged kids. Sometimes, if a dog has been hurt badly at a groomer they just never get over it & will have to go to a vet to be totally sedated like Ro said, much safer for everyone envolved that way. Hope that helps & if you need more, let me know. Off to finish watchin the Skins game.
