Things are quite busy. Mexican sounds awesome, Spot.
A few quick comments. Personally, I would give just about anything to put my kids in private school or homeschool, especially Bryson. I do not know how to teach a dyslexic child to read, and private schools are too stinkin' expensive in Atlanta. I really miss not sharing our lives one on one. He really hates church now and opposes all things organic (this, the son of a naturopathic doctor). Anyway, sometimes there are no other options, but public school. All you can do is be involved and pray until you can't pray anymore!
I really feel bad for the Amish community. The second largest community is Holmes Co. Ohio where hubby was born and bred. We love to visit their farms as often as possible. I really hope they can overcome this. Has anyone seen Devil's Playground? Its a documentary on Amish's rumspringah (spell?). Very interesting.

Can't get at today's archives yet so I'm not sure what y'all had to say.

Boy, I was as mad as a hatter this morning. The two school shootings and the Foley caper really got at me. But, as I was getting things done around the house today I found a picture that my youngest daughter was drawing last-night, I horse we use to have, and (this my sound a little simple) I remembered how good my life is. I would be picking my daughters up from school just like I always do. They'd be in the car jabbering away, a-mile-minute. I'd be tucking them into bed tonight. I really feel for those families who's lives are for ever changed because of events this week and I said prayers for them. But, knowing I would see my two girls in just a few hours really righted the ship.

Me-They...I know what you are saying about people trying to make the Bible say certain things about our diet. I know of a Christian group that try to use the Bible as a reason to become a vegan. I don't agree with that but I have to agree with Boo & MDC. So many of our foods today have been poisoned with all kinds of toxins and chemicals. The foods that are fed to our animals have many steroids and antibiotics so that they will grow fast/big. It's just not natural. Then when we ingest this food/meat, it is then released into our bodies. And of course, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. By no means am I saying that I don't ever eat anything bad for me. But I do try to eat overall pretty healthy. By the way.....I do like that good ole mayo every once in a while. haha

REV, yes, it's getting impossible to avoid the toxic food completely unless you grew all your own food, milked your own cow, grew your own meat, etc...you would have to go back to living like the Ingalls on the prarie (which none of us has the time to do). I am trying to eat more healthy and leave the rest to the Lord. I try not to deliberately eat pork or shellfish, though.

Auh20, we have to keep our thankfullness for our blessings, don't we? Sometimes I think I should just stop watching the news. It can really get you down. I just watched a psychologist on ABC talking about the mental state of poeple like the one who killed the Amish girls. He says he beleives he planned to commit s#xual abuse on them before the cops showed up. Thank God he didn't get the time to do that. That is one thing to be thankful for.

My son also has dyslexia and I WISH I would have had this book a long time ago. Get it and read it and force your school to implement its practices. If Bryson has been evaluated and has an IEP, you can demand some special programming.

I'm going to get it TODAY. You should hear my son reading now, though. He is doing great. His biggest problem is with spelling and retaining math. What's the weather like way up there in your area. It is going to be 90 again here today and humid so it will feel even hotter. Can you believe it, in October! Ugh! I can't wait for some cool weather. You know, here I am about to build a house and all I can think about is the day when I can live somewhere in a cooler climate. What is an IEP?

By the way, Lucy, I think you are doing great with your son (thinking of your comments earlier about not being able to put him in private school). Like I said earlier, for some private school is not an option right now. You are obviously doing your very best and God sees that. He is faithful.

To Idelle Msg 46060, I was in Frappr from 8:30pm eastern time until 11:00pm eastern time. Millie arrived about 8:35pm but after a few minutes, she had to leave unexpectedly. Boo arrived shortly after Millie left. We waited for Millie's return by remaining logged in but without chatting. When I tried to send a message around 11:00pm, I got logged off and received a message that Frappr was down for maintenance. So I went to bed.

October 04, 2006 - Msg 46067: Sorry guys(and gals), didn't mean to leave you hanging about Kai. Well, the doctor said that Kai's lungs were clear and she didn't have a fever, so I fixed her a lunch and brought her back to school(besides, when we were walking out of the doctors, she said, "Daddy, I'm ready to go to school now"). And she seemed to be pretty much back to her old self. Last night, she was up late coughing again, so I decided to just keep her home today and rest. She has her school pictures tomorrow and dance class later, so I figured it would be best if she just rest up today, and we'll see how she is tomorrow, and whether she'll go to either one. But she seems pretty good, just the cough.

Oh, I almost forgot, Kai was placed in the gifted and talented program at school. I am kind of mixed about those things - don't want her to get too big of a head - but I am proud of her.

October 04, 2006 - Msg 46068: An IEP is an "Individual Education Plan" that a special needs student has once he has been tested by the local school system (this determines if he qualifies for special services in the Learning Disabilities department, Hearing Impaired, etc.) The plan basically says what special needs classes/accommodations they need to learn in the general school setting. Private schools may also have their students tested by the local school system and services can be provided by the local school at the private school setting. I go to two parochial schools for children with hearing impairments.

For some great information on dyslexia - "google" Learning Disabilites and go to the National Learning Disabilities Association website. They have some helpful tips for parents and educators.

Schools can only do so much but they can do more if they know the parents are really involved. As I have said before - "the squeaky wheel gets the grease." You must be your child's advocate in the public school setting. There are Christian teachers out there in the public school (I know, I am one and work with many) but I am also in rural Indiana and it is a little different than a big city or a suburb. But I am sure they have some too!

Also Lucy, IEP's can be changed at any time, not just once a year. If you want something new tried, tell them...give it a quarter or a grading period, if you don't like it -tell them you want it changed again. Find what works for your son - that's why it is called an IEP - I is for "individual."

Sterling, sounds like Kai is a smart cookie. I know you are the kind of parent that won't put too much pressure on her and will watch her for signs of too much stress. Our schol doesn't have a gifted and talented program, kids work at their own speed. Some are just farther along than others. The school sent home a form today for those who wanted to join 4-H. Sean seems really enthused about it. Do any of you do 4-H with your kids or know anything about it?

October 04, 2006 - Msg 46075: Boo - boy do we do 4-H! We have tooo much in common. . .Casey took his goats and vet science last year. We limited projects to 2 so he could do a good job on them. It is a pretty good organization - if he is interested, I say go for it!

Glad I could help with your information about special education. It varies from state to state but there are federal guidelines that all must follow. The National Center for Learning Disabilities has a lot of info - you just have to surf to find what is good for you use.

Did anyone see Oprah today about the teens who tried to kill themselves and survived? It was so touching to hear them talk about how much pain they were in but how now they have a joy for life because they are putting God first and trying to help others. Very inspiring. One was a young woman who lay down on the tracks of a frieght train when she was a teen. Eight freight cars ran over her and she survived. She said she felt something pushing her down and she believed it was God doing it to keep the trains from killing her. She lost both of her legs, but survived.

Well, better go...got some homework to do for bible study tomorrow!

Sure do wish it would cool down a bit. My landscaper friend and his crew were here all day, returning today to finish up. I wanted to get some pansies in the ground while they're here, but it's too hot to plant them. They'd bolt for sure, and I'd have plants three feet long with one little bloom out on the end! Better wait a couple more weeks. I should be able to plant them myself by then.

I took off work the last three days to get some projects done at home and was horribly unsuccessful. I ended up going shopping with the Mrs., playing outside with Chad, and puttering around the yard. Oh, well, there’s always next time.

BOO, REV and MDC: About the food thing, here’s what I have to say: nyah, nyah! No, actually, I completely agree with you. I didn’t mean to imply that we shouldn’t try to eat healthy, and that means different things to different people. And our food today does seem like a risky science experiment sometimes. I was commenting more on the growing Christian movement that holds up the Old Testament diet as “the” Godly one. I myself try to buy organic, limit processed foods, and try to make good choices at restaurants.

It is so hard sometimes to know what you should eat, though. For instance, my wife did a lot of research on milk when we had our first daughter. For the first year she got it from her mom. For the next two years she drank only soy milk. Then, when we had our son, all these studies showing the possible effects of too much soy on boys’ hormones and development started popping up. So we switched to organic (cows’) milk. Then, it was reported that the brand of organic milk we were using didn’t use hormones but did pen the cows up and did not let them graze. They were fed corn, which meant that they had to be given antibiotics. So we switched brands. It’s just not easy.

Another consideration, too, is the mistaken belief that our food today is filled with toxins but used to be all natural and pollution-free. The last part of that statement is just not true. Understanding of the food chain, pollution, diseases and sanitation have always made our food supply “iffy.” Whole communities experienced outbreaks of such things as anthrax poisoning, botulism and Lord knows what else. Even through the 1930s until food became heavily regulated, thousands and thousands of Americans, in cities as well as rural communities, died every year of food-borne illnesses. Heck, people even ate poisons for their perceived benefit; women in the 19th century took small amounts of arsenic to thin and whiten their faces. The difference is that now half the bad stuff that makes it into food is stuff that is put there deliberately like pesticides and metals.

On a similar note, there is considerable evidence that the relatively sanitary society we live in may be harming us; studies show that allergies and asthma are on a steep increase. Kids who grow up on farms have a far lower incidence of them, and kids who grow up with no pets have the highest incidence. Seems we need a few germs in our lives to condition our bodies.

MDC: You couln’t pay me to eat at McDonald’s! Burger King or Wendy’s, okay, but not the Golden Arches. Did you ever notice that all McD’s food has a distinctive taste? Their burgers don’t taste like burgers, but McDonald’s food.

LUCY: I wasn’t passing judgment on public school in total. I fully understand all the considerations. I have many friends whose kids are doing just fine academically and spiritually while in public school.

Where’s TOM been lately? I hope he’s not off-line again.

I have had alot of things going on including moving, new job, my 2 year old son having double hernia surgery and too many more to list and I wouldn't want to bore you with that. Just wanted to say it is good to be back home with good folks such as yourselves. It has been unusually warm here too; up in the upper 80's almost 90 but more Fall like weather will be here this weekend. Looking forward to it; Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. Well I have to get back to work but I do covet your prayers and I know the porch has some strong prayer warriors -- Please pray for me as it seems I am in spiritual warfare and battling depression and guilt -- I want to pray but it seems sometimes the words just won't come.

I've been reading up on the horrible killings that took place on Monday. The more I read, the more I respect that Amish community. The families of the victims have been ministering to the family of the gunman since the day it took place, and they are asking that the public not turn grief into anger or hate. Talk about setting a Christian example for the world to see. If any good comes from this terrible event, it may be that the nation gets to see God's grace, love, mercy, and peace through these people.

One of the kids is having some pretty bad problems at school, and told the counselor it's about me. Also, had baaaaaad night at work ......a 40 year old dishwasher tried to molest a 14 year old hostess. Her dad wants to kill the guy, literally, and the cops came and it was such a mess. I'm just sick about it. Yesterday I was supposed to get chemo, but had a problem with my port....was at the hospital today from 9 to 4, then went for chemo, now I just feel yucky. I think I need some down time, but I know it's not gonna be possible. If I can stay sane this week, I AM wonderwoman.
Supper's on me.....salisbury steak, gravy and rice, baby peas with pearl onions (they twang my buds) and potato rolls...tea with lemon. Y'all eat up!

Good to see SM Hillbilly back on the Porch-prayers for you friend. The way I see it,you don't have to get all fancy & proper when you want to pray.Just talk to God as natural as you like-He'll listen.

Folks, I'm going to say something and please don't take me wrong. I truly admire the forgiving Spirut the Amish are showing. We all can use more of that. But I was doing some concerts in the Ohio area a few years back and had the opportunity to sit down with an elder Amish man and talk with him about his (amish) faith. We talked probably for about an hour. He allowed me to ask questions and it was very interesting. But the one thing that I had a problem with in the Amish faith is the Bible says we are to go forth and share our faith. This older fellow pretty much told me that they have no desire to reach the "outside" community. I asked a ton of questions but this sebject is the one that really stood out to me. Please don't take what I'm saying to believe that I think they are "bad" people because I certainly DON'T. I believe they are kind people and from what this man told me I have no doubt that they believe in the salvation of Jesus Christ just like most of us do. But as a traveling minister the "keeping the faith undercover message" kinda bothers me. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

From everything I've read or witnessed, I agree with your analysis of the Amish. There are some differences with regard to salvation also. Me-They, I have been thinking that the example of love that the Amish are showing may just be what some unbelievers might need to see. It might make them re-think Christianity. God bless them. REV, that's interesting about the Amish. I have wondered how they reconcile the exclusiveness in light of God's command to go forth. Maybe their idea of evangelization is to bring up many godly offspring that will love and serve the lord. I really don't understand, though, why they can't live as they do and still reach out to the world. Maybe different people need different things. For instance, I have talked before about a cousin of mine who is something like Amish (forgot what they call it) and it is a really exclusive group of folks who have withdrawn from the world, for the most part. They lead very simple lives and homeschool their kids. The church and community are very tight-knit. I thought they were all wrong until I found out that they were mostly people who had been drug addicts, heroin addicts and such, who had come to Christ and needed to be in an atmosphere of extreme accountability. My cousin had not been able to stay off the drugs and was physically abusive to his wife until he joined this community 20 years ago. He is not even the same guy now. Clean and sober ever since...a real good guy, even a fireman now. My point it that maybe same folks need that kind of lifestyle? Just a thought.

Where is ASA?? Hope is is OK. I thought about him today when I was at the bookstore buying a copy of James Herriot's "Creatures Great and Small"..I know Asa likes his books. Hurry back ASA.

You simply must get away and rest for a while. Your body is under heavy stress with the chemo, and you need rest so that the necessary repairs can be made. Your spirit is under fire as well, and again, you need rest.

SM Hillbilly, on the subject of prayer, when it doesn't feel like you're "connecting", I know that feeling very well. What finally came through to me was the scripture abour "praying without ceasing." Now just how on earth does one go about the activities of life, and still "pray without ceasing"? Obviously, one cannot spend 24 hours a day on their knees in prayer. That led me to the realization that prayer can (and perhaps, must) be an attitude of the mind and heart. Certainly, spoken prayer is important, and God expects it. But to "pray without ceasing" means, to me, to keep the lines open, the subconscious mind in touch, and as Me-They said, we just listen for His voice. It's when we are in that quiet attitude of mind that the Holy Spirit which dwells within us speaks to God for us, more clearly than we could ever articulate for ourselves.

On the subject of the Amish, and other separatist communities, I too have often wondered how they can fulfill the Great Commission, when they live in such isolation. I admire their dedication and commitment, but have wondered about their lack of evangelistic activity. These days, though, in the light of the things that are happening in this wounded old world, I'm beginning to wonder if maybe they're right. At least, it seemed until this week that their kids were sheltered and safe, and not affected by the evil that stalks the land. Now, even that has been broken. I just don't know.....

Well, I'm a pooped pup, nursing a bit of a cold and am going to bed early. (whiiiine) I feel like a total ninny even making such a statement, in view of what Millie and others are enduring right now. Forgive me, please. I am praying that things improve for everyone on the porch who is having difficulties. As my good friend used to say, well, just praise the Lord anyway! October 06, 2006 - Msg 46126: Good morning, everyone! Yep, Me-They, I remember sandwich spread. One of my aunts always had it in her fridge, and a sandwich at her house always tasted really special. It was especially good on turkey sandwiches, the day after Thanksgiving. As for the mayo/MW debate, I've stated my position before (in case anyone cares), which is that I'll eat mayo if I must, but given a choice, it's MW all the way! I don't find mayo to be gross, just sort of, well, blah. Still, I'll eat it. Now here's one that always amazed me. My husband's family, in Michigan, puts butter - yep, butter - a sandwich. Imagine a roast beef sandwich made on bread spread with butter?? Somehow, that just doesn't do it for me. Now, I have buttered burger buns (say that three times real fast) and toasted them on the grill - that's fine. But cold butter spread on plain bread for a sandwich? Yuck.

Millie, I hope today is a better one for you, honey. Just throw your loop around God's promises and hang on!

Basically, she used it in place of mayo. She used tio watch me after morning kindergarden and I remember that lunch was always a sandwich, soup, and half a grapefruit or a banana. It was extra special if she had alphabet soup.
