September 30, 2006 - Msg 45973: Good sweep, ky girl, thanks. About the milk, actually I haven't had a glass of milk in probably fifty years. I refuse to drink processed milk, and as for raw milk, it's nearly impossible to find in the city - health laws and all. I don't like any kind of milk well enough to go to great lengths to obtain it, so I just don't drink any at all. I like all dairy products, even buttermilk and cottage cheese, but cannot stand milk. Besides, I read a comment somewhere, to the effect that humans are the only mammals who continue to drink milk after they're weaned from their mothers. Something to think about, no? Not that it would stop me if I liked milk, but I don't, so I sorta like the quote.

Has anyone tried re-stuffing the pillowtop on sofa cushions? My sofas and my chair have cushions that have an additional pillowtop. The furniture is about 8-9 years old, and the pillowtops have gotten a bit squashed and weary-looking. They're stuffed with thick layers of polyester batting, and are zippered across the back. I bought some soft foam sheets, cut them to fit, removed the batting and tucked a sheet of foam between the layers. So far, so good. Now comes putting the newly-fluffed filler back in the shells. Hmmm. Rather like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube, or putting a cat in a shoebox. It ain't easy! I got my chair done, and two sofa cushions. Still have four to go, and I think I'm going to call it a night. I feel like I came up loser in a wrestling match. The ones I've gotten done sure do look nice, though, and are very comfortable!

Prayers for Asa, and Lucy, and Millie and everyone else who needs them. I just ask the Lord to help and protect all of my porch friends - He knows who needs it.

As for the drinking of milk fresh or other wise, I didn't mean to dampen anyone's view of fresh milk. Golly, I'm not what one might call "a go to person" with regard to healthy eating tips. I'd eat a deep-fried cheeseburger if I could find one; I'd probably top it with some blue cheese before downing it.

Lucy-Prayers for you. I'm not sure what to say. Boo said it well, "may God guide your family." You certainly have my prayers. Thanks for the advice concerning my neck. It is feeling much better. I did use "Icy Hot" cream; I wonder if that has the arnica root in it that you had mentioned you mention?

Poor Horatio-I did and do enjoy watching TV and like yourself, I'm guessing, I really enjoy learning new things. There are many shows that are so informative these days, I think it's great. There is still much garbage on TV but many channel are dedicated to teaching an instructing.

Seems that Madonna's mockery of the crucifixion is just fine with NBC, but the little vegetables in Veggie Tales making any reference to God is just not acceptable. October 01, 2006 - Msg 45988: You know Ro, the state of our nation is on my mind all the time now. I am very concerned about how things will be for my children when they are my age. I feel a need to teach them how to stand firm for what is right, no matter what and that is what I am trying to do. It's the main reason I have them in a Christian school. I am validated everytime I hear my son quote passages of scripture that I don't even know at age 43. I really think they are going to need it if they are going to make a difference and stand true to the faith in this modern-day Babylonia we find ourselves living in. I AM happy to say that our church has started sing the old hymns in every service. We still do modern ones, too but the old ones are always in there somewhere and it thrills me for my children to be hearing them in church.

Have to go get ready to take the kids to a birthday party and then to a church fellowship. Whew! I thought Sunday was supposed to be a day of rest.

Bruce and I were just talking and I was trying to express how tired I am and how I just don't have any enthusiasm for life anymore. Seems like everything is an effort for about the past year of my life. Just something I am going through right now. I have been sleeping as long as I can in the morning instead of spending quiet time with the Lord and in his word. I know I need that to keep doing all I need to do around here. The only cable television channels I love to watch are History Channel, Learning Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, Military Channel, Weather Channel, Arts & Entertainment, Biography Channel, Documentary Channel, Home & Garden Channel, and TVLand.

To Romeena Msg 45978, don't bother with contacting the networks. Your private conversations will not generate negative publicity. Networks hate negative publicity and upset sponsors. Do your best to generate one or both. Letters to the editor are good. Just don't sound like a nut frothing at the mouth otherwise they won't print them. The networks are hurting financially (competition from cable and satellite) so that is why they are willing to take risks.

To Millie Msg 45981, you are a welcome sight. Sorry to hear about your computer troubles. I'm just glad you have returned. I'm still prayin' for ya. October 02, 2006 - Msg 45997: Good morning, all. Poor Horatio, as of yesterday, our church has gone to one "traditional" worship service, and one "contemporary". I attended the traditional one, and it was just lovely, singing some of the old hymns I hadn't heard in a long time. Up until yesterday, our two services were alike, each a sort of combination of traditional and contemporary - a couple of old hymns with some of the newer "praise songs" added in. It was okay, but most of us older folks get a bit tired of the lengthy repet-ition of the praise songs. Singing the same song through six times is a bit much, even if it is relatively short. We tried to negotiate with the music minister, asking that the repeats be limited to two and another hymn added. No luck. The answer they came up with was the two different services. OK, we're flexible. I do have to say this, though - looking around in that traditional service, I never saw so much gray hair in all my life! Guess that tells us something. Now, as for congregational participation, brother, we do! We are a singing church. We have an orchestra, made up of church members - my brother's wife plays clarinet - and it's used in both services. Our drummer has been with us for many years, and is very good. Our brass section needs a bit of work, they miss the talents of my nephew and his trumpet, but he's now a music teacher down near Houston. Well, anyway, the Bible says to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord", so that's okay.

My rent house is still vacant, and I'm getting into a hurtin' situation! I've got to get that thing rented. I've dropped the price to $1600, and offered to take care of the yard, but we're not even getting any calls on it. Unfortunately, the folks who are moving into Irving now are mostly illegals and cannot afford it, unless we're willing to let multiple families move in, and I just won't do that. They could pay the rent that way, but twenty people or more living in a 3-bedroom house will tear it up pretty quick. I just don't know what to do.

Wow, I just noticed! My angel trumpet plants (brugmansia) are both blooming! The yellow Dr. Seuss has eight huge blooms. Pink Frost has one bloom and a zillion buds! They're so spectacular, and Dr. Seuss is fragrant in the evening, smells like toasted vanilla sugar. You can smell it from thirty feet away. Lovely!

Prayers for you, too, RO..concerning the house situation. That is very frustrating. I remember the feeling we had when waiting for our house to sell. Have you considered trying to sell the house instead of leasing it? That might not be easy to do either. Are people buying in your area? We were really blessed to get our sold when we did. We have friends on the street over that have had their nice 3 bedroom on the market for a year with no bites. It is even near the elementary school but nobody seems interested.

Thanks, Boo. No, I wouldn't consider selling the house. I could, but the money would gradually be eaten away and then there would be nothing. Once when I said that, someone said - well, just put the money in the bank and don't touch it. Uh-huh. That $1600 a month that I get in rent is part of my income. If I put the sale price in the bank, where do I get the income? It wouldn't pay nearly that much in interest, so I'd have to draw on it, and one fine day it would be gone, and so would the house. Also, taxes would eat my lunch if I sold it. So, I guess I just sit tight, and hope it rents soon. What's hurting me, and everyone else in this town, is the heavy influx of illegals. We're drowning in illegal, non-English-speaking immigrants. Property values are falling as a result, and no one who could afford the house is moving in here.

Make up single page flyers in quantities just enough to pass around or deliver in the neighborhood where your vacant house is located. Include in the flyer not only the amenities of the house, but most important of all, offer a finders fee of maybe $100 to whoever refers the first renter who signs a rental contract with you. You might want to go back to your original asking price and not offer to take care of the yard for starters. That finder's fee will sure get word of mouth going amongst your neighbors, their relatives and friends.
I sold a condo in one week, without an agent, by offering a finder's fee. The reason it took one week was because we were negotiating the price.

What happened at the Amish school with the little girls being shot just makes me so very sick, and sad for the children and their parents. May be remember to pray for them tonight and for our nation. October 02, 2006 - Msg 46019: Ok, just had to cry and pray a bit..unburden the soul. I'm ok Millie. It just bothers me so much to think of someone going into the school and killing those innocent little girls. I want Jesus to come back. This country is trying to hard to get rid of God and people are getting more and more evil in their deeds, even in this country. I know God postpones his judgment because of his great mercy and I try to remember that. It is just hard to see how evil men's deeds can be. I have heard people teach on the Rapture of the church and I am not sure where I stand on that, theologically, but I sure hope it's true.

Glad to hear work went well for you, MDC. That is something to rejoice about.

I know you must have good days, very good days, and bad days! We are always ready to listen when you need to talk about any of the three. You are an amazing child of God. You remind me of the three Hebrews that King Nebudchanezzar (sp?) threw into the fire when they wouldn't bow to his golden image. Remember they told the kind that their God was able to deliver them from the fire but even if he didn't they would still be true to their God? Jesus was with them in their trial of fire and brought them through, same as he is with you in yours. He's walking with you and will deliver you. You know, when those three Hebrews survived that fire and were pulled out alive, the bible said they didn't even smell like smoke, only the ropes they had been bound with were burned off. I pray that as you walk through your fire, you will come out as gold, with only the things that bound you burned off. Hang in there, friend because I KNOW the Lord is with you and will deliver you. About the Amish school shooting, we have a large Amish (as well as, Mennonite) community in our neck of the woods. It is not unusual to see an Amish family in their horse and buggy on the road. I've spoken to many of them and bought many of their baked goods. There is an action/flea-market that takes place here every Wednesday and it is always filled with many Amish men, women, and children buying and selling their wares. I can't imagine what type of coward would attack them like this guy did. I know he was "sick" but he was "sane" enough to attack those that would most likely not fight back.

Romenna-I couldn't believe your post, about "Veggie Tales," when I first read it. Well, I should say I couldn't believe but I the same time it doesn't surprise me.

Ya know folks, I'm in such a foul mood about the state of things, and instead of venting here, I'm gonna stop back later.

I had been flabbergasted trying to figure out what the Amish could have possibly done to this guy(in his warped mind) that would make him take "revenge" for something that happened when he was a kid, and you made me realize that it probably had nothing to do with the Amish at all. He just chose them because he was such a coward he didn't want to attack people who would put up a fight.
When I worked at the store here I used to deal with lots of Amish from our community, and I always found them to be some of the nicest people I have ever met. And their kids the most well-behaved. Sad that there are people in this world who would take advantage of that.
Yeah Boo, I think we need God in a big way.

Well, have to go make a Doctor's appointment for Kai. She woke up last night with a bad, croupy-type cough. Now, normally, I wouldn't worry about something like that, especially when she IS getting over a cold. But with Kai, I don't like to take chances.

These school shootings are ridiculous that with the recent murders in Pennsylvania, that even those who are in remote areas are not immune from this violence.

I travel to many high schools in my job and the apathy of the students is appalling (please forgive my misspellings). Not all students are apathetic but there are enough to upset the apple cart. Until the family unit is a GOD oriented family unit once again and people take responsiblity for their children - I see the violence escolating. Most parents who have children in public school are good parents but there are those few that when Johnny does something wrong, it must be the school's fault because Johnny would never do something wrong.

In the middle school where I base out of there is a strict dress code. We have one student that received a 10 day out of school suspension for continual violation of the dress code. When she returns - the first infraction lands her with expulsion - where are her parents? Another has a continual problem of insubordination, etc. . . But this will follow them onto adulthood and then we will have the type of people who have plagued our children in the recent violence.

I know that the latest attacks involve adults but I also know in our area, a teen was arrested because he had a homemade bomb ready to take to school. How does one make a bomb at home and parents do not know?!

Whatever is happening - it is senseless. The churches in this nation need to come together NOW and take back this country. If the muslims can declare a Holy war - why can't we declare a Holy war of our own to take back our families?

I know the odds of something like that happening here are very small but I can't help but wonder if they aren't going to become more frequent since these two nuts decided to take out their aggression on helpless little girls and now have gained so much attention. It's like they were thinking, 'what can I do that would be so horrible and detestable that I will get the attention of the whole world?' God protect our nation's children.

Homemaker, we used to live in a suburb of Corpus Christi and it was an upscale area where most of the kids have parents with money. Most wear the best clothes, get new cars when they turn 16, etc. and I'm not kidding, most of the parents here refuse to control their kids and won't let the schools do it, either. I have friends who teach in the high school and you wouldn't believe the stories they tell about the disrespect from the kids and how parent's get mad at the school if the kids are held accountable. They started doing random drug testing and the parents are having a fit because they either don't want to know if their kids are on drugs, or they don't want them to get in trouble for it. Parents have even been caught trying to smuggle in their own urine for their kids to use. Can you believe it?

I agree with you Homemaker about taking back our families but you probably won't agree with me when I say that a good way to begin is to remove our children from government-run schools. When our children spend so many hours in a godless institution for 12 years of their lives, it is going to be harder to infuence them with a god-centered view of things (not impossible, of course, at least not yet), but harder and I have good christian friends whose children are now on drugs or worse. One of my closest came up to me the other day in church. He name is Carol and she and her late husband Gene always had their kids involved in church. Gene was a deacon in the church and a wonderful, loving Christian. I watched them grieve terribly over their daughter who fell in with the wrong crowd at school and has been a drug addict for years now. A few weeks ago in church, Carol came up to me and said, "Julie, I just want to encourage you to keep doing what you are doing. If I could go back I never would have put my daughter in public school.". Now, we can say the same could have happened in Christian school but I think we have to play the odds, so to speak and try to have our children in the least dangerous environment, if at all possible. I also think that Christian teachers should be working in the public school system (in groves, ideally!)...I just don't think it's the place for Christian children...of course there may be exceptions in elementary levels.

I can't even discuss the events of yesterday in Pennsylvania. I don't know what he deal is, but the exploitation, abuse and killing of innocent children is epidemic. I know that it has always been with us and we just hear more about it now, but the crime get more heinous every day it seems. It truly breaks my heart.

STERLING: The answer is that these kids did nothing to this looney, nor could anything that ever happened to him justify his actions. I hope that God has mercy on his soul.

BOO and LUCY: I agree about trying to eat healthy, but the New Testament releases from dietary restriction of the Old (like with pork), and that's where these books on "Biblical" diets leave me cold. They seem to forget that little fact. That said, like Paul said, if you think eating meat is okay, eat it; if you don't, don't. God has placed animals and plants on this earth for our sustinance, and he has given us the knowledge to make our food safer. Things like pasteurization of milk began for a reason, not to make milk taste worse. But, like most things, variety and moderation is a good thing when guided by the common sense God gave us.

And on that note, I say...mayo, I rebuke you! (So, there, AUH2O!)

That she comes home from school singing praise songs from music class? That she can spout from memory many more Bible verses than I? That she comments on God's power when discussing the solar system she learned about in science? That the teacher takes prayer requests and the students pray before they start the day? Taht all sporting events begin with a word of prayer? I could go on, but you get the picture.

I have nothing against the educational qualities of many public schools. But you can't get reinforcement of the things you are teaching them at home in a public school. And I don't have the energy to contantly coounter the anti-God view that my child would be learning. I respect the parents who can.

Aren't we grateful that we have this forum where we can pour out our hearts, and know we will be understood? I can't top anything you folks have said, and won't try. At least not on the serious things -you've said it all.

One little thing. Me-They, on the subject of processed milk, I think it's not the pasteurization to which I object, but rather it's the homogenization. When I was a kid, the various cows in the family were carefully and frequently tested for disease, the milking and storage of milk were done meticulously, and our milk was safe. On a large scale, for public consumption, that would be difficult to guarantee, and it's true that some really scary things can occur when milk is not handled properly, or has to be stored for a few days. Thus, pasteurization, and that's good. It's that silly "homogenization" process that ruins it for me, I think. That, and the memory of the little half-pint bottles at school, which were allowed to stand until they were at room temperature, and the milk tasted like the little cardboard stopper. I was forced by a ruler-wielding teacher to drink the stuff, all the while knowing there was good, ice-cold, unprocessed milk at home. Yuck! Double yuck! Just ruined my taste for milk.

October 03, 2006 - Msg 46038: Hey Y'all. Laci went back to doctor this morning. He removed casts,stretched her legs again and put short ankle casts on her for a few weeks. He said that her muscles aren't tight anymore,and her feet are just like he hoped thay would be (not turned inwards anymore). He predicts she'll be walking by Christmas! What a gift that would be!
Wanted to pass the good news along about this little girl,in light of all the tragedies lately. God Bless the school victims,their families,the troopers that have to deal with the aftermath,the Amish,and everyone touched by the events of these past few weeks. I am not trying to keep the laws of Moses, I just don't eat pork or shellfish for the same reason that you don't drink paint thinner: toxins. They don't lose the toxins but store them in their flesh and, like you and Mayo, I prefer not to eat it. Of course, I probably eat plenty of toxins down at the local Sonic, too, but like you said, "moderation". HA.

I know exactly what you mean, Me-They about your daughter's school (it sounds just like the one my kids attend). It is such a comfort, isn't it?
