Prayers for you Warren & everyone else. Asa things with my sister are about the same, haven't talked to her in about a month, even that wasn't talking it was email. Ro who were the groups, I love southern gospel & gospel bluegrass is my favorite. I am sitting on my front porch this morning, while it is still nice enough to breathe, most of the race folks will be leaving tomorrow I suspect, the Richard Petty Driving School is holding an event at the track today, you get to climb in a car & race around the track with them, trying to keep folks here one more day I guess. I meant to tell all of you that want to send Tom wrappers, I don't chew gum either, sticks to my dentures, so I usually just buy him the whole pack & ship them that way, he can chew the gum or give it to Gizzmo's family or whatever after he gets the wrappers. That might work for you guys. Best get off the porch for a while & do some research for Tues. I just got a call (yes on Sun) to come be on TV this Tues. for the Pet of The Week segment. Talk to you all later, for those that don't want McDonald's how about some BBQ chicken, corn on the cob, grilled Vidalia onion & potato salad here at my place afterwhile. See you in a bit.

I wanted to talk to you about Warren. I know that we got a tid bit worried about him the other day, and he posted, and told us that he was okay, which was a relief.
You may be thinking that he has just left the porch, accept for a few posts here, and there, which is 180 degrees from what has really happened. As he told me in a recent "conversation" of sorts, he is a member of so many different chat rooms, fan clubs, websites, and so forth, that he gets tied up, and doesn't have enough time for all of the sites, and ect. This DOES NOT mean that he has left, desserted, or even forgot about the porch, he just got busy. He said that he still respects, and loves the porch, and that he appreciates how nice the people here are(which ya'll are). I hope that you understand, and don't think that he's just left us, or gotten mad at us!!! Thanks for being so understanding!!!
Thanks,

Good evening, all. Just got home from a grandson's birthday party. He's three. He's ready to vote, drive a car, and knows about all there is to know. He's quite opinionated, though it's a bit hard to keep a straight face when he's correcting somebody's mistaken idea about a particular "choo-choo". He's also very, very cute, which makes it difficult to dole out the correction when he needs it. I'm glad that as a grandma, I really don't have to worry too much about that. I'm also glad that his mom and dad are not snookered by his angelic appearance, but will definitely step in and correct him when necessary.

Millie, I am praying for your situation dear. I do hope and pray you will get feeling better soon. We were studying on the book of Job yesterday in Church and as I was reading about all his afflictions heaped upon him, and how he never quit believing on the Lord, it got me thinking of you and your situation. Good morning everyone. I hope that you all had a good weekend.
MILLIE: You are in my prayers and I hope that this week is a whole lot better for you physically and mentally. You can always pull a chair up here on the porch and sip some lemonade. Heck, I'll even give up the swing for you.
TOM: Sorry, I'm a non-gum chewer, too.
BOO and IDELLE: Today was Nora's first day of school. She was a little shell-shocked, but okay. I walked her in since she wasn't sure where to go (they just built a new elementary school). Based on the desk tags, there are five girls and ten boys in her class. Not sure how I like that, but we'll see. Thankfully, she knows three of the girls and enjoys playing with them. There are two classes per grade and they "shook up" the two Kindergarden classes from last year.
BWB: Thanks for the update. DWF: Check in when you can and don't sweat it; there aren't any attendance requirements on the porch.
MDC: Obviously, that wasn't where the Lord wanted you to work, at least not anymore. You have a great attitude, buddy. In the midst of what would be a difficult time for anyone, your attitude and outlook is a great witness to the peace of our Lord. Your job situation is in my prayers.
ASA: Those earrings don't match your toolbelt. Ain't you got some bullets to polish?
HM: As long as it's still beating! That's the important thing. Whenever I go to a new doctor they usually ask me if I'm a runner because my heart rate is so low. I tell them, no, I'm a sitter. And I'm darn good at it, too.
BOO: We weren't into "Daniel Boone" either, and ended up watching HGTV's "Design Star" marathon all afternoon yesterday. It was pretty good, but I can't believe I spent the a good part of the day vegging in front of the tv. Actually, I did that for a few hours on Saturday, too, watching a "Columbo" marathon on Hallmark. It was just too darned humid to do much outside. Or at least that's my excuse.
IDELLE: I agree with BOO; it's great to have you back on the porch. I've enjoyed our chats. I hope my being a boy isn't too disappointing.
Did any of you catch the Emmy's last night? We watched it for a short while. I happened to notice that when they did the memorial section it seemed like Don Knotts got the biggest applause. I was suprised to see who had passed away this year.
Well, I know I had some other things to say, but can't remember them now. Gosh, forty hits hard. Hey to COLT, SPOT, HORATIO, ROMENNA, BIG MAUDE, STERLING, REV, MAVIS and all the rest. Where's CHARLOTTE and GOOBER? Breaker, breaker for FRED. And check in DIXIE; how'd that date go? Inquiring minds want to know.

August 28, 2006 - Msg 44762:
One more thing. We sand one of my very favorite hymns yesterday and I can't get it out of my head. So I thought I'd sing it to you, hope you don't mind...
A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he amid the flood
of mortal ills prevaling.
For still our ancient foe
doth seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right man on our side,
the man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabbaoth, his name,
from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.
And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo, his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.
That word above all earthly powers,
no thanks to them, abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours,
thru him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill;
God's truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever.

August 28, 2006 - Msg 44764:
Thanks for that fine rendition of a great old hymn, Me-They. Seems like it's getting harder to hear them these days. It's all about the "praise songs". Our church has been in a quiet state of turmoil about the issue for some time. We're about to have our 50th anniversary as a church, and naturally, the greater percentage of our membership is older people. Obviously, if we're to survive, we must attract younger families as well. We are told that "young people like the lively praise songs, and get 'bored' with the old hymns."
Well, I like the praise songs too, usually, but cannot imagine being "bored" with the old hymns. What does bore me is singing a praise song over and over, about ten times, until it totally loses any excitement. There just has to be a compromise somewhere.
So, in response to repeated pleas from the older membership, we're trying a new plan. The early worship service will be "traditional", old familiar hymns with maybe one praise song thrown in. The second worship will be "contemporary" with maybe one old hymn included. Something for everyone, right? We hope so. We'll see how it works out.
I have nothing against the praise songs, but just read over the words that Me-They posted above. Poetry, pure poetry, and right-on theology as well. "Lord, we praise You" repeated ten times over just doesn't hold a candle to it. It has a place, of course, but it just can't compete with the old classics. Give me "The Old Rugged Cross" anytime.
OK, soapbox going back under the porch with the spiders. Anybody else want to use it before I put it back?

That's okay MAVIS, I'll climb up there for you...
ROMEENA, you're exactly right about it being poetry. The fact is, hymns such as this one were composed to impart theology as well as offer praise. In a time when many people could not read, even the Bible, in addition to individual verses and catechisms they could easily memorize hymns which imparted Biblical concepts and helped to explain our relationship with God. While some say traditional hymns are not "hip" enough to satisfy a new generation, many hymns like this one have stood the test of time and have been around for hundreds of years. In that time musical and cultural tastes have changed many, many times but still these songs endure. No, it's not the songs, in my opinion, it's our refusal to tackle complex or deep ideas. Praise songs are okay, but they introduce very simple concepts, uttered over and over, designed to induce an emotional, not intellectual, response. I believe that emotional responses that do not stem from intellectual understanding are fleeting. God gave us a Bible and a brain; it's obvious he wants us to try and think about our faith, not just "feel" it. We're just a stubborn people who want things packaged our way, usually the easy way. There isn't a substitute for the good old hymns; that's how they got to be good old hymns.
Me-They
August 28, 2006 - Msg 44768:
Another thing...a number of years ago many of the churches in our area tried the same things your church is, ROMEENA. Many of them have now switched to the more modern style because they claimed those services were much more popular. But in every case I know of, the traditional service was scheduled very early on Sunday morning, and the modern service later, usually at the "normal" time of 10:30 or 11:00. Well of course that service would be better attended! Our church's service begins at 9:30. Do you think I'd prefer a 11:00 start time? You bet! You know how hard it is to get three kids up and ready to leave on a Sunday morning by 9:00. So the deck may be stacked against those traditional services from the get-go. Just a thought.

Afternoon all,
ME-THEY..I dont mind at all if you are a boy. I dont think they are yucky anymore.
I do love the Praise and Worship songs. We have a praise band at our church too and it can be very powerful and moving. I do still love the old hymns too though. But it is nice ( i think ) to have some drums, etc and really get moving while worshipping.

Hey Spot, whats for lunch?
Asa
August 28, 2006 - Msg 44776:
Can't argue with that, IDELLE. A few praise songs thrown in and good instrumentation can add alot to a service.
My wife doesn't think I'm yucky, either. Annoying and exasperating at times, maybe, but not yucky. And just for the record, ladies, we are not made of snakes, snails and puppy dog tailes. So there.
YEah, SPOT, what IS for lunch?
Me-They
August 28, 2006 - Msg 44777:
"Tailes" is from the French, meaning "wagging appendages."

August 28, 2006 - Msg 44780:
Oh, believe me, my church has plenty of instrumentation - horns, drums, guitars and the like, in addition to the traditional piano and organ. My brother's wife plays the clarinet in the church orchestra. I'm not at all against that, and as I said, I like a praise song myself. It's just the endless repetition of the same few lines that gets to me. When some people start sitting back down, at the 8th or 10th repetition, you'd think the music leader would catch on. Also, the lack of the deeply worshipful and spiritually strengthening old hymns worries me. But make no mistake, when Rusty, our drummer, is ill - trust me, he's missed! --Romeena

Wonder where BOO is today? "How can you say that before you know what you're getting?" "I've seen Bunny Funkhauser; I know what I'm getting."

Colt, thanks for the kind words. Maybe we'll move to Lincoln IL, ha. What is your address there?? haha I may have to change my name to ucle ollie!
I am at the local library. Just checked careerbuilder. Nothing to "build" on today however!
M-T I think you are right on with the hymn situation. I also like hymns that ARE simply Bible verses put to music. I think our Lord enjoys hearing His Word being used to praise Him.
I like the hymn with the words of Revelation- "Glory, honor, praises, riches be given to ur Lord...he alone is worthy.." good stuff.
Well, have a good day.

No soapbox here, just standing on tiptoe -- I think we're all pretty much on the same page, maybe just on different lines of the page now and then. Music is a vital part of worship - "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands" - and it all has a place. During the years that I sang in our church choir, I enjoyed it all, from the swelling, soaring anthems like "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" to the extremely lively "Step Into the Water". I love the scripture put to music too, MDC. Anything done to God's glory is fine with me, but I don't want to see the modern stuff replace the old and beloved hymns, and that's where the trend is headed. I think we just need to be vigilant and see if we can't have both. --Romeena

I can't sing a lick, not a lick, but I do enjoy the music on Sunday mornings and get a blessing out of the words, instruments and the beaitiful voices as well. Poor Mrs. Poltice could not do a thing with my voice so I just sit and listen.
I am ready for that snack, SPOT and have some nice warm chocolate brownies to go with your Mayfield WHOLE milk (by the way does that come from whole cows?). :) You have a good evening folks and SPOT, thanks for getting the lights back on. Big Maude

Trust me, do you think a woman who has Redskin stuff all over her house could really quit like that? LOL Lucy you can fix that hole by talking to us even if you can't get here, I do it all the time. Not in public tho, they might think I was talking to myself & send me uptown somewheres. I'm off to bed, gotta get some rest if I am gonna look good on tv tomorrow. Hope I can get some sleep, the coyotes are back & all I hear is them yippin & yowling out back. Night porch.

We had some real rain here today, and temp around 80. Very nice! I hope the cloudiness and cool temps will slow the algae growth in the fish pond, and maybe I'll be able to go more than two days without cleaning that dratted filter. It's not that it's such a big job, takes less than ten minutes, but I just get tired of doing it.
Ha! The hospital called me at 5:15 and said a bunch of patients were discharged, we had too much staff and would I want to take the night off. Does a goose go barefooted? You bet I stayed home! The Plum was delighted, and so was I.
Well, off to bed. Probably can't sleep after my little nap this afternoon, but no problem. I'll just read or watch TV, and listen to the Plum's soft little snores. Tiny nose, tiny snores. Mercy, I love that little furkid. --Romeena

Spot: that sure was a good breakfast.
Mavis: I am a Skins fan as well. Although the past year or so, we've watched more college football.

Romeena, you make me laugh with the phone headset idea. I might just do that my own self. I can really have some good conversations with myself, and I hardly ever get into a disagreement.
Thanks for the breakfasr Spot. But we can't have Mavis doing the dishes. She's practically a movie star. Gonna be on tv today and everything. I bet she will get her own show next. I just hope she don't rise to the top too fast like Leonard Blush and get that skin condition and have to wear a mask, the poor dear. Good luck Mavis and wave to us.
Congrats to that baseball team Spot. Thats quite an accomplishment. Reminds me of when I used to play ball as a child. They used to call me old rifle arm Asa. I guess they still talk about me down at the school.
Well better get going. Work is hollerin at me. Later.

Oh my gosh, ASA, you kill me!
You folks are such a delight to chat with. I was too busy to check in yesterday but hope to drop in some today.
Me-They, hope Nora's first day of school went well...let us know the details. By the way, thank you for posting the hymn. I was able to sit down long enough to read it yesterday and, "that'n made me cry"! I, too, fear that the hymns are becomming a thing of the past in churches. Very sad. When I was a child, I thought they were boring, of course but I am so glad I had to sing them in church during those years because now I know so many of them by heart. My children don't know any, I don't think.
Mavis, hope you are a "smash" on TV today! I LOVED the pictures of your puppies!! Especially the one of Feather in the red cap! You really brightened my day with those photos...everyone should check them out if you haven't. Talk about bringing a smile to your face....what cute dogs those Bull Terriers are.
Got to go get the kiddos up for school and then take dear ol' Dad to the doctor this morning. Ya'll have a great morning,

'Mornin, all. Mayor Colt, the Plum has no idea that it's cooler outside, or that it was hot or anything about it. She lives in air-conditioned comfort, and never sets her delicate little paws out there. She has piddlepads in a little wooden frame in one corner of the bedroom, and I wash those every couple of days. They're the same underpads that are used for patients in the hospital. When I leave for work, I'm gone about 14 hours, and that's just too long to ask her to wait, so we developed the piddlepad idea. Works fine.
Now I'm off to the doctor - routine appointment. Had my labs drawn last week, so today I'll find out how mu blood sugar averages and cholesterol levels are doing. Shouldn't be too bad.
