August 25, 2006 - Msg 44636: Good morning, all. Beautiful day here, but it's winding up to be another scorcher, I think.

Tom, don't go trying to give me all the blame for our little project. I was only the coordinator. Somebody had to be. Many of your friends here participated, and without each one, it would not have happened. I know every single porchster would have been involved if they had known about it, but some didn't know. We couldn't mention it on the porch, or you would have known what we were doing, so it was all done by email. Since some addresses aren't available, those folks didn't know what was going on. If they had, I know they would have joined in.
Anyway, as the note in the card Don gave you said, our original plan was to replace your TV, the one that broke. Then while we were getting everything together, you beat us to it and got yourself one. So, we went ahead with the plan anyway, and decided to just do the gift card thing and let you get whatever you choose.
Our good friend Don was happy to be our front man and actually deliver the goods. He is indeed a treasure, a "mostly-silent lurker" on the porch, but one of us nevertheless.
I'm not going to be so bold as to list the names of those who were involved, but I think it would be fine if they owned up to it themselves. It was supposed to be an anonymous project, but that's hard to do, so we might as well come clean.
And now, we'll be anxious to hear what you get for yourself.

IDELLE: Yeah, I remember all those things as well. Loved that rec room. Oh, the teen drama that unfolded there!

SPOT: You watched "Wild, Wild West?" A little trivia about that movie, the locomotive that they used ("the Wanderer") was actually B&O #25, the oldest operating steam locomotive (built 1856) in the U.S. It was borowwed from the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore for the movie. I worked at the museum at that time, and we got a preview screening of the film. It was a pretty cool experience, if not a great movie. A couple of our railroad ops guys got to go out to California with the locomotive and actually operated it (it is, after all, a historical artifact). Warner Bros. financed it's painting for the movie, and it's switch back to it's original blue. For you old movie buffs, the locomotive also was used in a number of 1950s and 1960s era westerns, and most famously starred as "The General" in Disney's Civil War movie, "The Great Locomotive Chase." Although I'm not big into trains, I enjoyed working at the B&ORRM. Hated the commute and long hours, though.

BOO or anyone "in the know": I fogort to ask when it was brought up the other day, but some of you referred to the A Beka series. This is the series my daughter's school used in Kindergarden. She may be using it this year as well, I'm not sure. Is there something wrong with it I should be aware of? This being my first child in school, I am not familiar with the various curriculums and after (very brief) research assumed this one was good.

August 25, 2006 - Msg 44650: Me-They..I dont think there is anything wrong with the Abeka curriculum. I have not used it yet,but have looked through the catalog and have my order ready. The closest Christian school to us uses that. It is suppose to be very good. Good Bible base. I think my niece uses it too. The only thing about it is that it is pretty advanced. Like, for Kindergarten..the guide that I have says they should know cursive writing by the end of the year.

August 25, 2006 - Msg 44656: IDELLE: I try to praise my daughter whenever appropriate but go out go my way not to brag on her about specific things. I let her know how special she is but never, ever compare her to others. I did well in school and vividly recall my father introducing me as his "straight A son." He didn't mean it to be, but you have no idea the anxiety and pressure that caused me as a little kid. When I didn't get A's, I was guilt-stricken. I never got in trouble or anything for not getting A's but felt I had to live up to that bragging. I want my kids to do their best but don't want them to either feel that kind of pressure or get so puffed up they think that they are better than others. We are all special in our own way.

Besides, you're right, kids do tend to even out. I know some kids who were reading and writing extremely early and others who lagged behind the class. By the time they're seven or so, most all are on the same page.

Funny thing, we were pretty puffed up about Nora being ahead of schedule on most everything, doing well at soccer, and doing well in her ballet, etc. But, when we feel like bragging, we can look at Chad who seems a little behind the curve and loves every minute of it. He's a great kid, but at three doesn't seem to have much interest in "early learnin'." I'm sure he'll turn out just great anyway.

While I'm at it, I'll take this opportunity to tell you how much of a crock I think all-day Kindergarden is. Why do educators think that kids need algebra in the six grade, much less intense learning in Kindergarden? So now they teach what they used to teach in first grade to five year olds. Will this give us geniuses at graduation? No, it's an excuse to give parents free daycare while allowing the schools to get a jump on teaching to the tests. When I was in Kindergarden we went half a day, and part of that was eating snack and taking a nap! About the most intense learning we did was practicing on those button/snap/latch dolls, singing the "ABC Song," and fingerpainting our numbers. Somehow through this meager offering I ended up graduating, going to college, and getting a decent job. And, you know what? I also was able to actually be with my mother for more than a few hours in the evening. I know some people have to work, but mandatory all-day Kindergarden is not the answer to smarter, better adjusted children. Kids that young can learn more at play than in the classroom. Ooops! There goes the soaopbox...sorry!

Well I do have to say...I see nothing wrong with all day Kindergarten. I am looking forward to it. I went all day and my children will go all day. They learn so much in preschool and they should learn much more at home. (I have a teaching background) I taught my daughter ALOT..not to brag on myself,but I think that parents should be very involved in teaching their kids the basics and not relying on others to do it in those precious early years. Now..at our school..Nap may be optional. THe teacher we talked to says she will judge that based on how the kids are doing. If she feels that they are just plain tired , then she'll offer a nap. Now I dont know what she'll do when she just has a few out of the class that really need a nap, I am assuming she will offer the nap time to all. I think that kids do learn a lot from play..but I also feel very strongly that they need some structured activities..even at 3 years old..heck even at 2 sometimes. This allows them to prepare for school. A lot of the schools do more because they are prepping the kids for college. Of course this should be more focused in high school. Around here the public schools are not as advanced in academics as private and Christian schools, although, at our school, this particular teacher i know and talked to said that they will adapt to the different levels of the kids. For instance if some kids are a little more advanced..then they will give them more to do on their level.
Anyway.. just another view!!

IDELLE: No, I'm definitely not a female. Nothing wrong with them, though. Heck, many of my very favorite people are of that persuasion.

We will have to agree to disagree on the Kindergarden thing, but that's cool. You say potato, I say potata. Yep, that's fine...as long as you know that I'm right and your're wrong (hee hee). Hey, if we all agreed on everything, ice cream shops would always be out of our favorite flavor. Now that's something to chew on.

I completely agree with you about teaching ones own children. Educating children is a parent's responsibility first and foremost. Teachers can't be blamed for every aspect of educational growth, nor should they have to babysit.

We love our daughter's school. They are academically rigorous, but understand that kids still need play. Public school in our area have completely done away with free play at lunchtime and recess. And high schools have lowered phys ed graduation requirements. Sad.

Not to beat a dead horse (and I have beat many a dead horse), but I will say that important as a good education is, it is not the most important thing. As a Christian, I believe that my number one responsibility is to serve the Lord and instill that in my children. Intellectual growth is just one tool we must hone to do that job well.

Anyway, I certainly respect your opinion and hope that you don't a problem with mine. After all, how can member of the Cherrystone rec hall club be all bad?

August 25, 2006 - Msg 44666: Me-They, I agree with your philosophy for the most part. It's so great for kids to get to stay home and be kids most of the time. I remember wanting to go to school at age 5 but kinder was half a day and no sweat, mostly play. I do think that some kids do better with more scheduled activities, which can be done at home, but I'm not in the position to do that here caring for my elderly parents. My first choice would be to do that, though. Erin attends a Christian school and seems to love it. She has a very sweet teacher and 4 other classmates. They have naptime, and recess three times during the day. It wasn't an easy decision to make to send her because she is very young (turned 5 last month) but I think it was the best option at present. Even thought the school is using A Beka, the school's philosophy is different from the public schools, and less pressure on the kids. Speaking of, thanks for the prayers for Sean. He has a very sweet teacher and I sent her a note today explaining Sean's frustration with the work and that I was trying to find some help for him. When I picked Sean up this afternoon, he told me that his teacher had prayed for him and cut back his work load. I believe that was an answer to prayer.

It is pretty cool that it's here in my little town, lots of neat things that go along with the race. Last night they had the Hauler Parade, it's really neat to see, all the haulers lit up & paraded down the street.

Ever sense we started talking about Mama's Family, I've been looking on the comp., and I LOVE what I see...I'm thinking of going to see Vicki Lawerence live Statesboro Georgia. She does what she calls Vicki Lawerence, and Mama, a 2 woman show. She talks as herself for a while, then turns into Mama, in full costume, and does that for a while. It really looks neat, and the closest she's coming to here is that town in Georgia, so I guess I'd have to go up there. I really want to go, though. I just did a search using BRISTOL NASCAR and TICKETS as keywords and found multiple online brokers. While it's true they charge a premium, you can shop around online and over the telephone and possibly find some reasonable prices. And once you get in to a race, you can buy tickets for future races and sell them to the ticket brokers.

Poor Horatio most folks have season tickets to Bristol, so you can't really get tickets by just getting there a first time. The scalpers are all up & down Volunteer Pkwy, the road the track is on & tickets are starting at $400 each, that's the cheap ones! I'll just watch from home unless I have a client that sells me a ticket for what it actually costs, $90 to $130 they usually have drawings for season tickets that aren't renewed each year. Race was a good one tonight, lots of cautions & one red flag, & to quote what most folks, especially drivers say "That's Bristol"

August 25, 2006 - Msg 44680: Evenin' again, porch, still trying to muster up the energy to act like somebody. Boy, am I draggin'. I thought I'd have a little longer before I felt this bad. Oh, well, next week I have a break from the chemo and all the meds. That will be good.......do some stuff with the kids. 10 more days 'til they start school. This year I'll have 4 kids in 4 different schools! Whew! Gotta take some more medicine, be back later......love y'all.

August 25, 2006 - Msg 44681: Oh, Millie! My heart aches for you, honey. I know that "bad" feeling, though I suspect the chemo I took wasn't nearly so strong as what you're on. Still, I remember feeling like someone had pulled the drain plug and all my energy ran out. Or like my battery was running down. Something like that. And then the nausea, ugh! It's like walking in deep sand, you just wonder how you're going to take the next step. But you do, and one step at a time, the time goes by and the course is finished. Hang in there, love. We're praying for you.

Barnwannabe, I wish Vicki would do that show closer to me as well. I tried to get my ball and chai..., er, I mean, my wife to talk to the marketing people where she works to try to get Vicki's show there at the casino(since it seems Vicki plays a lot of casino's) but that was a no go, unfortunately. Oh, well, I'll have to keep checking her tour schedule.

August 26, 2006 - Msg 44689: I have been trying to read upon the archives. . .M-T, they start the basics of Algebra in 3rd grade and keep adding on to the process each year. In Indiana, all freshman in high school must take Algebra 1 and Biology 1 - no exceptions.
My cardiologist appt. went fine. I have had an EKG, a echocardiogram, a 24 hour monitor this week. All are precautionary because my family doctor found an irregular heart beat and because I was feeling so poorly. I believe most of it is because of Meneire's disease and I do have a slow heart beat (resting is in the mid 40's). All from being so active as a farm wife. Goat catching is an art!

School is in full swing and the principal has taken away my computer so I am at the mercy of going to the Library for Internet access until they configure my own personal laptop. He is a crock - some of those in administration need to be gone.

I am so glad that the project went well for Tom - he is a good guy!

Millie - hang in there girl.
Boo - I understand about the frustration and school, my son is so angry when he comes home because of frustration. The other is just waltzing through. Aah!

Asa - you are a real prince, especially in your toolbelt :) Thank you!

MDC, I can't beleive you have to begin the job search yet again! I want to tell you about my best friend who was let go from her job as a nurse in a local hospital. She is a single mom and was terrified..she is also the same friend whose little girl was molested by a teenaged boy and whose beloved dog died recently! She was beginning to feel pretty low. I saw her cry more in the last 3 months than all the 20 years I have known her. Anyway, she found a wonderful job that is just perfect for a single mom and she will be able to pick the kids up from school and be home with them in the evening and at night so she won't have to pay a sitter...also, her ex husband just volunteered to raise the child-support by 400.00 a month (big suprise considering what he is like). So...as you already know, God can give you a better job the next time! Prayers for you.

Idelle, it has been so nice having you back on the porch. The school my kids attend is a small private Christian school. The kinder has 5 students, 1-2nd grade is combined and has 10 and 3rd and 4th has 12. The upper grades have more students, though and they don't have regular classrooms, they have a big learning center where the kids have work stations..kind of hard to explain but it has worked well for Sean because if he had been in public school they would have placed him in a class with younger children. This way, he is with kids his own age and even older and the older kids look out for the younger ones. There isn't the bullying that goes on in the younger grades. The older grades use something called ACE curriculum and the kids are all working at their own level and they have to master the lessons before they can move on.

I had better go. Besides my own children I have 2 children of some friends who went on a little honeymoon and a neighbor boy. They had a big sleepover last night! Now the boys are making eggs in the kitchen...

August 26, 2006 - Msg 44693: Hey Homemaker, didn't see you there. I can sure feel for you when it comes to frustrated children and school work! It's terrible, isn't it? As a mom, you feel like you should be able to make it better, but sometimes they just have to go through the hard things and find a way to deal with them. I met a guy recently who is a financial manager for my dad's investments. He is 38 and put himself through college. He worked 2 jobs and went to school for 9 years to get his Masters in business, with no help from anyone. He said that his parents appologized for it later because they felt they should have helped him. He said to his parents, "Don't ever appologize for that. It was a great thing you did for me. I wouldn't be the resoursful person I am today if you had."...He is now succesful in his job, has a lovely wife and 2 boys, and is building a beautiful house down the street. He is his own contractor, too. Also, a church memeber, ha! I keep reminding myself that sometimes hard times build good people. I read a quote yesterday: "Faith makes all things possible, but not always easy!".

When I was in a gift shop the other day that my in-laws work in I met a woman named Jean who looked to be about 70. She worked there in the shop and she was just a very up-beat, happy person. I heard her talking to my mom-in-law about the year (1997) that her husband died and her son was killed in a car accident. I told her, I have to give you a big hug and as she hugged me she said, "You can do anything with the Lord's help. When he is with you!". Thought that was really something and wanted to pass it on to you.

August 26, 2006 - Msg 44715: Ha! Wildlife in the city. Haven't seen my raccoon around here in a while, and have lost no more goldfish. However, I think Possum has misplaced a young relative. I went out back a few minutes ago to check on something and encountered a young possum, about half-grown. Scared him a lot more than it scared me. He took off for the shrubbery really quick. Years ago, when our old metal tool shed was still in existence back there, it was home to a family of skunks. Mama and four babies, we saw them almost every night. Finally they moved on. We didn't bother them, and they never bothered us. My neighbor's dog got a bit too "nosy" one night, though, and got a snootful. Poor dog stank for days, in spite of a tomato juice bath and several other remedies. Funny thing, that dog pretty much stayed on their back porch after that.

I went to a Southern country gospel concert tonight with some friends. Very good! I really enjoyed it. Some very talented artists - all groups, no solo performers, though.

Tom, it sounds like you made a good choice for spending part of your money. What are you going to do with the rest of it? You're right, a lot of porchsters were involved in our little surprise - you have a lot of friends here. Sure wish I could send you some gum wrappers, but I don't chew gum, and so have no wrappers to send.

Well, it's late, and preaching will come early in the morning. I'm off to bed. No ironing board for me tonight, I don't need any adventure sleepin', just a good night's rest.
