August 21, 2006 - Msg 44456:
Hello porch family...MDC, Spot, BWB, Boo, Mavis, Floyd, M-T, Colt, Big Maude and everyone else that I may have missed.

AFD...good to see ya back.

Boo...I was in the navy for 4 years and I sweat so I guess that saying is true. Sad to say of course "swear like a sailor" is true also.

BWB..What city in Florida is the church and what's the name of it? (I may have been there before)

Spot...the ice cream was great. It hit the "spot". See ya at cracker barrel buddy.

Everyone have a great night and know that our Lord is always watching over us! God is good...all the time!
-REV.

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44457: You're welcome, BWB. Have you heard from Warren? I am starting to worry about him.

Mavis, you are in no way a witch (or what rhymes with it). You are a kind-hearted and caring person. I just hate it when people call others cruel names, there is never a good reason for it. My dad used to say that people who had to resort to such choice of vocabulary were just too ingnorant to choose more wisely. I can't even imagine how painful it must be to have your sister treat you that way; I know it would almost kill me. Prayers for you tonight, Mavis. There are plenty of good, loving people out there...probably very near you. May God bless you with his own people to stand with you at this hard time in your life. You have just had to go through so much in the last 2 years, I hurt for you. Prayers for your friend, Judy, also. So glad to hear that things are looking better for her.

Yes REV, come to think of it, one would expect a sailor to sweat once in awhile. You know, my dad (who is 80) was drafted into the Navy during WW2, when he just turned 18. He didn't even get to attend his high school graduation...(just say goodbye and report for duty)! He still won't talk about some of the things he saw but he tells about weeks without rations and getting down to 120 lbs (he is a 6 foot, over 200lb guy). It was tough but he still had it alot better than all of those poor guys who had to do the fighting. Dad used to drive one of those amphibious boats that they loaded with Marines and then when they hit the beach, the door came down and the Marines ran out fighting. He says he saw some drown and others get shot right away, terrible. Thinking about it makes me so thankful for all those who have (and do) fight for our country. God bless and protect them.

Better think about going to bed, Goodnight,

Boo

August 22, 2006 - Msg 44472: Good morning, all. Project People, check your email. Some have responded, some have not. I need the general vote. About half are in. If I don't hear from the rest, I'll just proceed this afternoon. The ones I have received are all in agreement, so I think it's probably safe to conclude that the others will agree, at least most of you, enough to make a majority.

Lovely morning here, but gonna be another hot one. It is so hot here (how hot? Dang hot!) that the few roses that still bloom literally dry on the stems. My poor lotus looks awful, leaves all fried around the edges. The water in the pond feels like bathwater, very warm. The poor little fish hang out under the bridge, out of the sun. Squirrels are shedding, looking pretty ratty these days. Birds are molting, I find feathers all over the yard and the birds look a bit tattered. St. Augustine grass is loving it, thick and green, thanks to my sprinkler system. It would be dead without that, but if adequately watered, that grass loves the sun and heat. Well, September isn't far away, and we can only hope for a break from this heat when it arrives. Temps of 105 and 106 day after day get monotonous.

Well, gotta run. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

August 22, 2006 - Msg 44473: Good Tuesday morning porch family, It is good to see everyone today. Millie, it is good to hear from you. Not much going on around here just work, and usual routine things with the kids. My sons first football game is this Friday night, please say prayers for the safety of those young men. I try not to worry about that but guess I can not help it to some degree. I am realizing that the Mom/parent worry does not ever stop it just changes to different things as they grow up. How about barbeque sandwhiches, cole slaw, french fried potatoes, and baked beans for lunch and maybe some of Millies homemade pies for dessert. Beverages will be lemonade, kool aid or iced tea. Ya'll come about noon. Have a good day and behave. Big Maude

August 22, 2006 - Msg 44474: Good morning everyone! We're dry here, too, and no rain in the forcast for the next week. You all know that those weathermen are never wrong.

MAVIS: Snitch? Why is somebody calling you a snitch? That's ridiculous.

BOO: Could you do a little extra spotting around my shirt collars? My neck is sweatuing with this heat. Wouldn't want ring arond the collar.

MILLIE: You tell COLT he has to share that lemon merangue pie with me.

Lunch sounds great MAUDE!

Good to hear from you, DWF.

I'll stop back later.

August 22, 2006 - Msg 44475: Well! It's about time our deputy dropped by. Guess he's been busy over at the crosswalk.

MDC, check your email. You should have one from me. If not, check your spam trap. Honestly, sometimes I think it's easier to just let the spam come on in, rather than having to dig in the garbage for something it trapped when it shouldn't have. Mine traps Poor Horatio's messages every time, and he's in my address book! There are about four others that get the same treatment, for some unknown reason. Dumb program.

Back yard is busy this morning. Hummer can't decide whether he wants to feed from real flowers or the feeder by my window, so he's doing both. Squirrels are swinging from the bungee-corn device, so funny. A couple of dozen birds are splashing all the water out of the birdbaths, and there is one who is determined to land on a lotus leaf in the pond, and can't figure out why it bends down and dumps him in the water every time. Honestly, this window is a constant source of entertainment. The little squabbles, petty thefts, bullying, child-rearing, flirtations and love affairs that take place in the brief lives of the wild things are just wonderful to watch. God blessed me with my yard and this window.

August 22, 2006 - Msg 44478: Good Afternoon Porch,
I hope everyone's had a good start of the day. We're still getting used to our school routines around here. Nicholas began middle school today. He was nervous, and asked me to stay. When the 8th grader came to give him a tour then he said see ya as if he wasn't scared. It was cute.
This morning I was at our Whole Foods/Farmer's Market when my car spit, sputtered, and died. I called hubby and he hit the filter and it started. I told him that he has to get the car fixed before I drive it again. So, I took the minivan. Considering all of my driving and the cost of gas I'm sure he'll get my Nissan fixed soon.
Mavis- I didn't see what had happened with your sister, but I know in my heart that you are not a witch. You are a wonderful, beautiful child of God. As Romeena said, it takes a dumb person to name-call. I tell all of my kids that. Chin up, and I'll be praying!
Colt- I'm glad you seem to be better.
Romeena- I love your tales of the animals in your beautiful yard.
Spot- I'm always available for Cracker Barrel.
Big Maude- Anything BBQ to me is deelish.
DWF- Nice of you to check-in.
Me-They- Read any good books lately?
Boo- Have you decided anything about anti-fungal's for Sean? I still recommend Candex, but Diflucan (prescription) is wonderful too. Since he's taking prescriptions, have you considered milk thistle to strengthen his liver? Is he on fish oils?
Well, I need to run. My house smells like sausage and its like to gag me, so I need to open a window or something! Y'all have a wonderful day!
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy

Hello to everyone.
To Boo Msg 44443, why not take advantage of your summer heat and hang your dryer loads out to dry? We do it all summer (even in Toronto) and it noticeably reduces our gas bill.
To Mavis, I just saw a news special about the increasing popularity of dog hybrids. Apparently, careful cross-breeding can eliminate or minimize defects inherent in certain pure breeds. It was quite interesting to learn about this. What do you think?
To Tom Msg 44458 & 44459, what kind of error message are you getting? Is it the bad word censor? Or is it the word is too long message?
To Millie Msg 44467, that pound cake milk sure has me salivating. Feed me please.
One more question. Since you make so many pies, do you ever use a sugar substitute? If you do, how does it affect the taste?
And finally, since it's getting close to school time again, how about us brushing up on our Government knowledge? For a start, let's have Barney teach us the Preamble To The U.S. Constitution.

Poor Horatio, hanging out clothes isn't done around here because of the high humidity in the summer. They just take forever to dry and smell bad. It can be done in the cooler, less humid months, though.

Lucy, I can't remember now the signifcance of the anti-fungal? I have been giving him flax seed oil and vitamins but not fish oil. Should I give him an adult dose of milk thistle? Also, my husband had his lab work done this week and his fasting blood sugar was 104. Are there any natural supplements that you know of that are good for lowering blood sugar?

Me-They, go ahead and throw those shirts on the pile. I'll spot treat those collars with Oxy-Magic (works real well). I think it has peroxide in it...speaking of, since we had the dead rat smell in the house, I have had a terrible taste in my mouth and nothing gets rid of it. Well, this morning I decided to try and brush not only my teeth but my tongue. I have a sensitive gag reflex, to put it lightly, and quickly gagged over that, so I decided to try some peroxide and water as a mouthwash. Eeewww! It wasn't so bad while my mouth was closed but when I opened it I could taste it and it tasted horrible! I proceeded to throw up my breakfast. Just a warning for those who are tempted to use peroxide as a mouthwash....don't!

Well, that was pleasant, wasn't it? Guess I will change the subject....A new name for Alyce...hmm, Gloria is nice but kind of boring, I think. How about Idelle Bushey?? She is the one who was making eyes at Charlene Darlin's man, Dud.

Alyce- How do you do? I'm from Atlanta, Georgia. I've been visiting his wonderful porch since February when Mr. Knott's passed away. Its nice to meet you!
MDC- You're right! My car has NO manners whatsoever. Hubby thinks its the air filter, but I said until its seen by a Wally then I'm not driving it. Horse and buggy sounds great! Will you clean the stalls?
BWB- That's great about your chapter. How exciting!
Me-They- I just re-read Billy Graham's "My Journey" if you're looking for a good book. Right now I'm reading a Christian fiction book and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Golf.
Boo- Sean can take an adults dose of milk thistle. Flax oil is good, but fish is best. Nordic Naturals makes them flavored and they are from wild caught fish, so there is no chance for mercury poisoning. Chromium is what Bruce should take for his sugars. He should be on a high protein diet with primarily whole grains, fruits and veggies as his carbs. Of course, exercise is really important. Everyone has some yeast and it all depends on if it has turned into a fungal form. He would possibly have skin rashes and cloudy judgement. Good luck!
DWF- Nicholas is in the 7th grade. His school in Arizona (where he lived w/his Mom until last week) went from K-8th grade. That's why its new to him. Our school's grades are like yours.
He hated it primarily for the reasons Bryson didn't like his school. He was the odd man out racially. Plus, he shows up in a Johnny Cash shirt where most kids are wearing big and baggy clothes. He was pushed around a bit and threatened. We told him to deal with it until the end of the week and then I'll see if I can get both boys in different schools.
Hey to Spot, Mavis, Rev, Charlotte Tucker, Dixie, and everyone else. I'm too tired to think, so I'm sorry if you've been forgotten. I love you all!
Blessings to you and yours,

August 22, 2006 - Msg 44507: Evening Porch! Thanks for all the prayers. In answer to the "mutt/Designer dog" question, I don't agree with them at all. People making money from folks that don't know any better by selling them mutts. A Puggle is nothing but a beagle/pug mix ie:mutt & people are paying thousands of dollars for these mixed breeds when there are thousands of mixed breeds everyday that are put to sleep in shelters all over the country. I just don't believe you can "breed out" inherent traits in certain breeds, no matter how hard you try, it will come back in a generation or 2. Anyway, that is my take on that, and the folks that buy the dogs thinking they are getting a "designer dog" a fool & his money are soon parted. I'll check my email Ro & I'm all for mexican food! You know what I really love is when it's cold outside and the rain starts. So cozy and nice to sit in front of a fire and sip hot chocolate or cook up a big simmering pot of chili...maybe light a candle and curl up under your favorite quilt with a good book...how's that sound??

Idelle (Alyce), the house we are planning to build is pretty big...we will see if we can afford to build it...by the way, to all of you, when I talk about things concerning the house please feel free to comment or share experiences (good or bad), we are planning about 3000sqft with a bonus room upstairs that we may or may not finish. We will build it to look like an old house. We are using something called hearty plank?? (not sure of the spelling), instead of brick so it will look like wood. It will have a porch all across the front and 6 foot windows in front. 4 or 5 steps going up to the front door, round pillars and railing across the porch. It will probably be all white, not sure yet. There will be two large dormers above the front porch. We hope to have a covered porch on the back, too. The inside will have 4 bedrooms and a study/computer room. The kitchen will be at the back of the house with windows over the sink, which will look out into the back of the property. The dining area and kitchen will be one rectangle shaped room. The laundry/mudroom will be off the kitchen and will connect with the garage. There will be an archway from the kitchen into the family room. The family room will be pretty basic; stone fireplace on one wall, entertainment center on one. The kids rooms are the same size and side by side with a bathroom in between that opens into the hallway..just your standard bathroom with a 2-sink vanity and a tub with shower. The master bedroom is a bit bigger than the kid's rooms but will have a walk-in closet and a bathroom with a shower and a whirlpool tub. The 4th bedroom is pretty small and we want to have a wheelchair accessible bathroom in that room, with a shower you can push a wheelchair into. I expect with my parents and Bruce's mom still living, we will have need of that extra room for at least one of them in time. That room is off the dining room. Well, I guess that describes alot of it...sorry if I bored the rest of you.

Better start thinking about getting to bed soon. I woke up at 5am for some reason this morning. I usually don't get up until 7am. Goodnight!

Boo

August 22, 2006 - Msg 44512: Hey back to you Lucy Matthews. Sorry I haven't been here for awhile. We had a week's family vacation in Florida. That was relaxing. Now it's back to real life--dealing with my mom's illness. She had surgery for cancer but has not bounced back from the surgery well at all. Now she's having bowel and digestion problems. All your prayers are coveted, porchsters. Tom, thank you for that poem above. It touched my heart. Someone needs to start a quote-athon. I guess I will.

Hello porch family...Spot, Millie, colt, Ro, Maude, M-T, Lucy, PH, Alyce, Tom, mdc, sterling, warren, bwb, Goober, mavis and everybody else that may have slipped by.

Ro...praise the Lord for your rain there in TX!

Boo...wow, that's an amazing story about your dad. I'm sure it hurts to think back on those times.

BWB..good deal man. So glad you are being blessed there!

Also Boo...the advice that Lucy gave on the blood suger is very good. Along with the chromium picolinate I would start taking a soluble fiber (like 100% psyllium fiber). Just be sure to take the fiber with plenty of pure water and seperate (at least one & half hours apart) from any other meds or supplements. As Lucy stated, diet and exercise is also very important. One other thing that can be very helpful is a garlic supplement. I feel the Aged Garlic supplement is the best. (I had to by more today also)

Alyce...good luck on the new name.

Prayers for you Tom.

Goober...glad you got things back working and you got back in your rocking chair.

Spot...did ya have any more storms today? Looks like you folks are getting some on the radar.

Well better get to bed. You all have a great night and remember that JESUS loves us!

August 22, 2006 - Msg 44515: Hello to everyone.

Hello and welcome back to Alyce Msg 44481. I don't recall ever chatting with you.

To Tom Msg 44482, let me see if I can help you understand how the bad word censor works here at the Front Porch. I will use an example with two fake words. Pretend the first word is wxyz and it is offensive and bad. Pretend the second word is abcdwxyzefgh and it is normal and good. If you try to use the first word, the censor will stop you because it is offensive and bad. But even if you try to use the second good word, the censor will still stop you. That is because the bad word (red in color) is inside the longer good word (blue in color) abcdwxyzefgh. So in your messages, don't just examine the full words trying to find a bad word. Look inside each full word for smaller words that might be offensive and bad. If you still need help, just ask.

To Sterling Holobyte Msg 44490, seems like you move just as often as I take a bath ... every three months!

To Tom Msg 44504, I will remember your grandmother in my prayers.

To Mavis Msg 44507, you bring up a good point about mixing breeds. The pure breads suffer as a result and end up in shelters, and then put to sleep when the supply outnumbers the demand. So sad.

To Rev Msg 44513, I tried to send you an order but I can't print out the order letter since my color ink cartridge is empty and disabling my printer. Soon as I get that fixed, I'm ordering your five CD's.

from Poor Horatio

August 23, 2006 - Msg 44520: Well, Poor Horatio, with all the technical support you give and other know-how, it doesn't seem like you have that much time for a bath, so you could be forgiven for that.:) As long as your wife doesn't mind.

It's almost like a family reunion with more and more of our long-lost posters showing up.
Alyce, you have a good memory. The MIL problem has diminished a bit for now, for which I am grateful. As for the hometown, I'd rather not say in a public forum if you don't mind, as I use the name Sterling Holobyte pretty much everywhere I go on the net and have gotten into some pretty heated debates at times with people whom I don't know if I would want them finding out what town I live in. That and I have my daughter to think of. You know, you can't be too careful. But I will tell you that I live in a small town in Wisconsin. :)
Charlotte Tucker, good to see you. How is the editor biz? You're not as long-lost as Alyce, but I haven't seen you in a while. Prayers for your situation.
And for yours as well, Tom.

Well, goodnight all. Sleep well.

Morning Porch

It is a sunny and beautiful day here on NY end of the porch.

Romeena-I have always loved hearing about your window, especially in the winter months. It's kind of strange our windows sound a lot alike but our geography is so different.

MDC-I just went through some of the archives and I read that you went to hear Barry's son speak, what did you think of him? I,also, would like to hear from Rev Jr

Lucy-I've read, I think, all of Billy Graham's books and I agree with your review of "My Journey." I want you to know that I've been praying for you and your family. You really are a strong person; Keep doing what you're doing for those kids.

Alyce-Welcome back! (I'll skip the Kotter tribute)

God Bless the Troops

August 23, 2006 - Msg 44526: just woke up after catching a couple of z's- oh two big breakfast and i'm in the digesting stage. auh20- hope everything your way is great as tony the tiger would say. fall will soon be in the air. idelle- good morning, was yours a name change? i've been in and out of the loop cause of health issues. millie- i'll choose 6 blueberry hill pies if yyou have the time. bakings a lot of hard work i know but i loved it especially cakes decorated the old way cause you could really detail it out. colt

August 23, 2006 - Msg 44527: Thanks for the advoce, REV and Lucy. I appreciate it. As time goes on, it seems like we all need more meds or supplements around here, getting kind of overwhelming! My sister took over mom and dad's meds (filling pill boxes and ordering meds). I had been handling it for years so it is a great relief.

Charlotte, I am sorry about your mom's struggles. Prayers for her today.

Idelle, 3000sf is pretty hard to keep clean, isn't it? If your situation is like mine, you do it all yourself. My dear husband is wonderful but just can't get the hang of housework. He works long days and I hate to ask for help. He helps with the kids as far as bathing and putting them to bed. Sometimes its hard trying to do everything for everyone (it makes for some really long days), though. I don't know how mom's do it who work full time and then have to do everything around the house, too. Mercy! The kids have had homework almost every night, too. The school they attend changed curriculum for grades 1-4 to ABEKA and it is more challenging. I am having a problem with the thought of my 5 year old being in school all day and then bringing home homework in Kindergarten! Makes me mad because I am the one having to struggle with her to get something done that I don't even agree with. Guess I should talk to the school and at least voice my opinion on the matter. I mean, it is hard to get a child who just turned 5 to sit and practice writing two pages of letters when she is tired from school. Am I nuts or does anyone else see a problem with that?

Well, guess I will go tackle some laundry...Me-They, did you throw your shirts on the pile, yet?

Boo

August 23, 2006 - Msg 44528: Good morning, everyone! Just got home from work, a very rough 12 hours. One of the worst shifts I've worked in a long time. The best part is, it's over. I do have to go back tonight, though. Argh.

Auh2o, I love my window. There's no way to describe the hours of joy it has brought me. I can see my entire yard, except for the two corners nearest me, to the right and left, and I can see pretty far into them, too. The "Yard and Wildlife" album on the photo site has three or four good shots of the window, taken from the back of the yard. Most of the fur and feathers activity takes place about fifteen feet out from the window, and the hummer feeder is about six feet from my eyes!

I can see the sleepy little early-rising squirrels, as they travel from around the neighborhood on the fence-rail highway, coming to see what's on the menu each morning. I love watching the changing occupancy of the squirrel houses. The squirrels raise a brood in early spring, then abandon the house and birds take over. Usually two clutches of birds grow up there, then in the early fall, often another brood of squirrels appears. I don't usually know they're there until I see their little noses poking out of the entry hole. Squirrel moms are strict disciplinarians, so the babies don't venture out until they're nearly grown. The moms are also very secretive in their comings and goings, so as not to reveal that they have babies in the little house. Such fun!

It's an ever-changing drama out there, with sassy jays, curious woodpeckers, mockingbirds full of att-itude, and squirrels trying to seduce each other. I could (and often do) sit here for hours, just watching. I never wanted a picture window on the front of my home, but I declare, I wouldn't take a dollar and a quarter for the one on the back.

Have a wonderful day, everyone. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

August 23, 2006 - Msg 44529: Morning gang!...lunch will be at burger king on me....work at 2 for me...3 doubles today tomorrow and friday!....well let me get the animals fed!....back in a bit..SPOT

August 23, 2006 - Msg 44530: Good morning gang! And another beautiful--if dry--one it is here in Maryland. We need rain.

Well, well, well. I actually had a sticky note on my computer to ask about CHARLOTTE TUCKER, AUH2O and FRED GOSS this morning. Glad to see you checked-in CT and AUH2O. Two out of three ain'y bad, but it's been awhile since FRED stopped in.

AUH2O: before I forget (again), there will be a docufilm on Barry Goldwater on HBO sometime in mid-September. I didn't catch the date or time. Evidently, it is produced by his granddaughter and early screenings have been given very positive reviews. I don't have HBO, but you can probably get more information at their website.

Good name, IDELLE. I've always used Me-They and don't recall chatting with you before, but I do remember you. I used to lurk here and post at Miss Crump's. I've been loafing around here for awhile now, probably like a year or something like that.

MDC: Thanks for the link information. I ended up finding one of RAFE's old posts and printed the "Spiritual Laws" out. That really is a great resource.

BOO: My shirts on on the pile. Do you iron as well? I do like 100% cotton.

3,000 square feet?!? I can't even imagine that big of a house. Ours is about 1,200 feet, not counting the basement (which is dirt) or the efficiency addition that we rent to my grandmother. We do intend on adding on another 480 square foot addition over the apartment, though. I have a hard enough time staying on an even keel with this little house. More power to ya! It sure does sound beautiful. Your last name wouldn't be Blandings would it?

Thanks for the reading suggestion, LUCY. What problems is your stepson having at school?

Prayers for TOM, CHARLOTTE, MILLIE and all.

I'll stop back later...
