Now, more than ever, teachers are teaching to tests and calculating scores. Here in Maryland, recess is a thing of the past in public schools (many elementary schools offer NO recess anymore, and some have cut back on physical education as well). History has become a step-child in high schools (there's no test for that so it gets the heave-ho). You're comments are exactly correct. Teachers aren't statisticians or baby-sitters; they're teachers! I could go on, but I won't...THis really gets my dander up, can you tell?

Public schools have become a sticky subject in recent times, haven't they?! Seems it would work better if we just reverted back to one-room school houses, taught the three R's, and left it at that. I think the Amish have it right: just teach the basics; forget about teaching kids how they should think; and let the parents raise the kids, as it should be.

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44171: Moulage? What moulage? I love a good moulage every once in awhile. Actually, STERLING, I think public schools have always been a sticky subject. A few years ago, there was a big controversy (well, a bigger controversy than usual) regarding funding of schools in my county which got a lot of play in the local paper. Schools here are funded through the county property tax. Anyway, in the midst of all that I was doing some research that involved looking through late-19th century issues of one of the local county newspapers. I was amused to find articles and letters to the editor throughout the 1870s and 1880s complaining about taxes and schools, and what was being taught there. (The public school law was passed in Maryiand in the early 1870s.)Seems some things never change!

Boo: In response to your note in MSG:44126, I'm not quite ready for that yet, but it probably won't be long. We've been dating for about 2 and a half, or 3 years, which I know is a long time, but we just haven't been ready for marriage. Kinda like Andy and Helen, dating for so long, then getting married. I know that they never lived together, but I haven't seen any harm in my GF moving in here. She's only lived here for about 2 months.

I mean no offense to Boo, or anyone. Boo: I'm not in the slightest, mad, or upset that you asked, alot of people do. That's okay, and there's your answer!!! :)

It's great to hear all of this musical nostalgic talk. As for me, I still have my quad stereo amplifier, record turntable, and reel-to-reel tape deck that I purchased in 1976!! And they all work!!

I also find the discussion about teaching very interesting. I believe our educational system is not improving because too many of the parents and incumbent politicians are either misinformed or just ignorant. In the past, when problems are identified, politicians try to solve it by throwing money at it. Without requiring any accountability of just how efficiently the money is being used, I think this is a huge mistake.
Also, unless you are dealing with children with special needs, I believe that eight years devoted to elementary school is more than ample time to prepare the student for the basics in life. As for post-elementary education, the student (with proper adult guidance) has three career building choices: college-prep high school, or vocational trade school, or working full-time.

Don't worry about it, Sterling. We have to have a school moulage around here now and then; it's tradition! What I think is unfair is how if a teacher teaches in an affluent district, they make a good salary but in the districts with poorer welfare families, they can't make a good salary so those kids suffer for it. I don't know if it's like that everywhere, but that stinks. All children should be able to have good teachers. On that note.....I want to share something with you. Last Sunday in worship service, our pastor invited a friend to give her testimony in service (her name is Mary). She is a public school teacher who decided to teach in her 30's after being in the insurance business. She teaches elementary school here and a couple of years ago, she said she felt led by God to further her education and become a principle. She finished her education, tests and certifications, etc. and applied at several schools. In the mean time, the principle of the school where she was teaching was mentoring her and teaching her all he knew that she might need to know (his name was Bill). Well, she prayed and trusted God but she got absolutely no response from any of her applications. She resigned herself to the thought that God must want her to stay in her teaching position for now. Well, in June, Bill, who was in his 50's and seemed to be in good shape, had his 25th wedding anniversary celebration and was on his way to a restraunt to celebrate with family when he died of a heart attack. The teachers at the small school where he served were devastated and met at the church that night for prayer. The next day, the district called a meeting and asked Mary to come. They told her that they felt that Bill would want her to be the principle of the school, so she is now the principle. She is such a sweet woman, the school will be blessed to have her take over after having to lose their beloved principle, Bill. At the end of the service, Mary sang the most beautiful song about God's grace, and she had the voice of an angel. Just wanted to share that with you..

Yes, Lucy, I had done some reading about that very thing and had even ordered a book on the subject from Amazon. It never got to me, though. I need to give more thought to the subject, thanks.

About the date.... Sorry I didn't bring him here for an introduction but the jury is still out on whether or not he be around long enough to be able to be brought around. He's nice but broke up with his last girlfriend less than a month ago..... Yeah.... not reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaalll sure about that. We were set up by a mutual friend. We shall see if I decide to keep him around.

For those who are curious we ate at Chilis and saw a movie not worth the mentioning. And I wore navy capri pants with a coral colored top that looked stunning against my dark hair (lol). Anyhoo, let's al pray that the right decision is made and neither of us end up hurt. I'll go where God Leads.

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44189: Ha, Disco Inferno is at the top of your list, BWB?! How funny...you must be a disco fan. I was more into rock, I think. Don't Go Breaking My Heart?! I haven't thought of that one in ages. Some of my favorites are Beatles tunes, and Wings, I listened to a truck-load of Elton John in high school, and Billy Joel, Queen, Cheap Trick, Journey, Bee Gees, too. Remember when Saturday Night Fever came out? I was in high school and my older sister took me to see it in Houston. I thought it was terribly risque'! It sure wasn't bad by today's standards, though...at least what I can remember about it.

Now I listen mostly to Christian stations on the radio and I have a box of cassette tapes in the kitchen with books on tape, music, teaching, etc. that I like to listen to when I am working in the kitchen.

SPOT, you actually have a working 8 track player? NO WAY! Poor Horatio was talking about having a working reel to reel. I remember those well. About 15 years ago, when I was single and working as a nurse, I worked the night shift and several of us that worked together became good friends. My friend Helen, had well-off parents who owned this great cabin on the river. We all decided to go up for the weekend one winter. The place was a dream. Big place with a huge fireplace. I remember just laying around in the den listening to old reel to reels of Roberta Flack and just having a wonderful time. Nice memory...

Well, way back in the 70's I was a big fan of David Bowie, Mott the Hopple, The Clash, and the Talking Heads. My favorite Christian singers were and still are Johnny Cash and Andy Griffith with a little bit of Aaron Neville mixed in there, just for fun.

Dixie-One of our daughters is entering the 5th grade, on the 6th of September. It's the the big move to the Middle School. It's nice hearing your side of 5th grade. As for your date, if you go where God leads than you will be fine.

As for the "school moulage" I think I'll impose a "self moratorium" on all moulages for a while. Sometimes I think I come across a couple sandwiches short of a picnic, if ya know what I mean.

ACE, I like some of Newsboys stuff and Steven Curtis Chapman. Do a search for Matthew Ward. On his website, you can hear some of his songs and I think you will enjoy it. He has quite a unique and, in my opinion, very emotionally moving quality to his singing. He also has an amazing testimonty. You may have heard of the old group, 2nd Chapter of Acts? He is the brother in the group with his two sisters, then he went on to make do some things on his own. He and his sisters had a traumatic childhood and lost their parents early but God was with them and used their singing/writing talents. Matthew also had cancer about 10 years ago and is now healthy. Check it out, you will be blessed I think.

MDC, you and Cecile sleep in separate beds? Interesting. This is not 1960, ha.

BWB: Without getting too much into it, it's great that you have a good relationship with yoru girlfriend. But if you want to make it truly great, you will need to make the Lord a part of it, and that means "making it legal" or taking it back a notch. I'm sure not the one to judge anyone elses behavior, but you can't expect the Lord to bless something that is not in keeping with His teachings. I honestly wish you both the best. No hard feelings I hope.

All this talk of the 1970s really brings a smile to my face. It's funny how the music and tv of your youth really stick with you forever. As far as music goes, my 1970s tastes run the gamut and some of the CDs on my rack are James Taylor, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Charley Pride, Buck Owens, ABBA, Earth Wind & Fire, Bee Gees (I would've never admitted to liking them back in the 70s!), McCartney & Wings, Al Jarreau, Steve Miller, Police, Jerry Rafferty ("Baker Street"), BTO, Alabama. I like some 80s stuff, like Police, Foreigner, Genesis, but I was never into real hard rock like AC/DC or synth stuff (when I hear "Tainted Love" I want to vomit). Now, I listen to a little of everything, but mainly Chrsitian, classic country or light jazz.

I have a 700 dollar stereo right beside the bed I’ve listened to maybe an hour’s worth in the last 6 years.. Somewhere along the line I just got to where I prefer no sound or just white noise (fans etc) better than music.

But given the site here, how could I not list Pink Floyd. I loved the Pink Floyd poster that had a Pink colored Floyd the barber on it.

But besides Pink Floyd I liked Bad Company, Cream, Beatles, Foreigner, Billy Joel’s Piano Man album. "Adult relations" within the confines of marriages is not just the traditional way, but the Biblical way. That said, pre-marital relations weren't just invented yesterday--they have a long history, too. I would respectfully disagree with the statement "you don't have to get married to truly love," in the context of romatic love, of course. By definition you are holding yourself back from the one you love by not making that commitment. It's not just a piece of paper, or a legal contract; it's a three-way covenant between you, your partner, and God. Marriage is not 50-50, it's 100-100. Anyway, that's my feeling about it, but enough already! Onto other things...

Regarding the 1970s, what are some of y'all's favorite movies of the 1970s? Here's a few of mine: "Sugarland Express," "Poseidon Adventure," "American Grafitti," "Star Wars," and "The In-Laws" (Remember that one? Peter Falk: "Serpentine!" Hysterical!). I'm sure that there is more I'm forgetting right now.

August 16, 2006 - Msg 44228: JT is probably my favorite male vocalist. I love his songs and his voice--a rare combination. In my opinion, he has the best pipes of any popular male singer in the last thirty years. For female singers, that distinction goes to Karen Carpenter. Some (many) may not like the songs, but there is no denying the sheer beauty of that voice. It's a shame she had to pass so young, too. POSSUM: Have you heard JT's son? I can't remember his name. But with James Taylor and Carly Simon for parents, could he sound anything but good?

The Mrs. and I used to go see JT out an outdoor venue every year when he toured in the summer, but he hasn't come for the last five years. Bummer! That's the kind of concert I enjoy; one where you can actually see (because people sit down) and hear (because people shut up and listen).

I like Skynyrd, too. And I agree with them about that Neil Young as well. (Now there's a voice like nails on a chalkboard. Why, oh why, did the great voices of Crosby, Stills and Nash, think he would be a nice adition to the sound?)

I don't care for grits, but I like G.R.I.T.S.

MDC-I just love Glenn Miller, Wow! Is that good music or what! If I had to choose just one person to listen to, I would have a hard time choosing between Johnny Cash and Glenn Miller. Pennsylvania 6-5000, gotta love it. The only one, in my humble opinion, that comes close these days is Harry Connick.

M-T, I have to agree Sweet Baby James has a fantastic voice.

MDC-I must say, I have always considered myself a well spoken person, as well as, a devout Christian but when you or M-T speak of Biblical matters I feel as though I am at school (in a good way). Romeena, BOO, Asa, PH, Lucy, Dixie and others are could be included on that list.

AUh20- thank you for that endorsement. Without trying to make it sound anymore dramatic than it was, I just had a 'real biblical understanding or revelation' about 20 years ago, and at that point I just 'had' to read it all from cover to cover. I was so amazed that i went to my pastor and asked if I could teach a "Walk Thru the Bible" class. He hesitantly said ok. About 20 people showed up. It was to be Wed nights for two hours for 5 weeks. The first wed, we just did introductions, where are you in your walk, that sort of thing, and a bit on Genesis. Well, word apparently spread and the next wed there were about 200 that came, so we moved it to the church! As you know, I was a school teacher, but the people said that it all just flowed in such an understanding way. I give God all the credit, for it was not just human knowledge involved!
I thank Him everyday for the marvelous insight.
BTW, it happened as I was praying for a greater understanding of the Holy Spirit. Hope that wasnt blowing my own horn too much.

Oh boy, I think I started another moulage. I would like to express my feelings about the subject of living together from a woman's perspective. I think it might be good for you guys to hear. Most people believe that the physical joining of a man and woman is more than just physical, and I believe that, too. It is also emotional and spiritual. It is particularly harmful for a woman to give body and heart to a man who won't make a lifetime committment to her. She needs this security. She might not say it or admit it because she doesn't want to push the man she loves away or make demands of him but a woman needs to know in her heart that the man she loves will care for her and cherish her for life. It's the way God made women, to love with their whole heart and soul and a man who treats this lightly is not wise. Man, if you really love her, protect her, care for her heart and soul. She needs that. I believe the reason God in his word forbids fornication is for that reason. To have s*x with a woman before marriage is to sin against her because it is causing her harm, not good (the bible calls this defrauding one another), it is also a sin against God, and a sin against one's own body according to scripture. Now, having said that, I think I can safely say that most of us have sinned in this way. God is a forgiving God but, he wants us to stop doing the things that hurt us and others that we love. God's way is always best for us.

Suppose you have an unmarried couple who have a platonic relationship and only live together strictly for economic reasons? I know of at least one couple like that. And I see nothing morally wrong with that particular situation.

Agree with you about Karen Carpenter too- what a pure clear sound she had.
